ELECTRIC COMPANY
Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Rappahannock Electric Cooperative is a member-owned utility that provides electric service to over 170,000 connections in portions of 22 Virginia counties. REC is committed to connecting members and communities with safe, reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions. But what is an electric cooperative and what makes REC different? The cooperative is owned by the consumers it serves, meaning member-owner needs are first priority. Cooperatives are like families with everyone dedicated to helping and supporting each other. Two of those family members are First Class Lineman Chuck Tippett and Manager of the Western Region John Arp. Chuck is dedicated to making sure your power is available 24/7 and will work to resolve any problem, even if it’s midnight on Christmas Eve. He is also a member-owner just like other REC customers, dedicated to service. John is all about making sure the technical resources are aligned, the design for the new service is enduring and that linemen like Chuck have what they need to make sure member-owners have what they
need. Both John and Chuck and all REC employees are problem solvers who work with service in mind. Service, not profits, drive all the employees of REC. They live and work here too, and like you they are part of the family. Cooperatives make long-term investments and plan for efficiencies with members in mind. That means decisions are based on both short-term and long-term needs of customers and employees, not stockholders. For example, did you know REC has drones to help find remote line breaks? The drones also help find problems quickly, keeping linemen out of remote and dangerous terrain. Cooperatives were started to serve and connect remote customers, like farmers and mountain residents, who big companies did not want to service. These humble beginnings are why REC cares so much — it’s part of their DNA. REC also is more forward thinking by implementing systems that will not only last longer but will serve its members longer. Just like family, it’s about relationships, trust and community.

PHOTOGRAPHY Studio C Photography Tim & Johncie Carlson When you walk into Studio C Photography on Main Street, you are immediately surrounded by memories. The walls are covered with prints on various materials showcasing not only moments in time but artful design and expertise. That’s what Tim and Johncie Carlson want you to know about them: They are a full service studio right here in Downtown Culpeper, where you can see what is possible and learn how they can help you pass on a memory. Tim and Johncie are the right combination for each other — and the right combination of art, expertise, support and vision to help create images that connect you to your family, your friends and the rest of the world. For businesses, they can create images connecting you to your audience or to your brand. Both are from the Richmond area and grew up in the theater and performing world. Tim started his photography career by taking wedding pictures at his hometown church. He went on to become the area’s only Certified Professional Photographer and remains so to this day. And when the opportunity came to buy and create his own studio, he knew it was his calling and life’s work. When not creating beautiful images Tim and Johncie still perform in local theater and make music part of their routine.
Music inspires his process and he often plays music while working. “It brings out emotions and feelings that come through the lens and onto the image,” Tim says. “It brings forth your true self or the image you are trying to portray.” Why is that important? Because Tim wants to show you and your life moments in the best possible light. In fact, Tim draws inspiration from playing with bright and dark, shadow and light, richness and muted. He sees what you don’t and can bring that vision to an image you and your loved ones can share and cherish forever. But the service doesn’t stop there. Studio C offers photo restoration, editing, enhancing, and printing. They also want you to know that you should actually print a few of your favorite images. Digital is disorganized and over saturated. What about a nice picture to give to your grandparents or to pass along to your grandkids or their grandkids? Yes, you have hundreds of pictures on your phone, but can you guarantee they will be there in 50 years? Or will you have access to them in 50 years? Printed images enhance major life events — and printed images captured by an expert brings it to a whole other level. And that’s what it’s all about. Capturing that moment that makes people light up when they see it.

SENIOR LIVING
The Culpeper Rose Wallace Rose Wallace wanted to have purpose, wanted to serve, and wanted to feel proud at her job as she helped people. As Director of Marketing at The Culpeper she has found a place where she can do all that and more. With a background in healthcare administration she helped start and manage private medical practices, including a new Senior Care Geriatric Medical Center in conjunction with Mary Washington. Through geriatric care is when she found her calling and purpose in life. Her mom told her she always had an old soul and both grandparents lived with Rose’s family so the family could manage their care. “I grew up learning Seniors are the wisest people who have amazing life experiences and knowledge to share. I grew up respecting my elders.”
Rose discovered what would eventually become The Culpeper, Lifespire of Virginia. On the legacy-rich grounds are independent living cottages, assisted living apartments, a memory care neighborhood, a restaurant, gaming parlor, a chapel, a gym, a cafe, transportation, a full calendar of activities, the list goes on and on. But when Rose found out no one outside of the local area knew about the community or assumed it was for Baptist’s only, she realized why she was called to Culpeper: to spread the word, to make a difference in the lives of the residents and to change perceptions of retirement communities. Rose, alongside the dedicated staff, is committed to service and creating a place that not only cares for seniors and their families but is a place the town of Culpeper can be proud of and potentially call home. It’s That love of seniors and passion for geriatric care is what brought all about service before self, relationships, respect and love. It’s her to Culpeper. While helping a patient look for assisted living not a last resort, it’s like living at a 5-star Resort. 12425 Village Loop, Culpeper, VA • (540) 825-2411 • www.culpeperretirement.org 6
REAL ESTATE RE/MAX Crossroads Philip & Kelly Thornton The Experience. The Tools. The Know-How. Ask them why it matters. For the vast majority of us, buying or selling a home is the largest financial decision we’ll ever make and picking the best REALTOR® is key. Philip and Kelly Thornton not only have the experience … with over 30 years of combined local market expertise, but a track record of proven results that few REALTORS® can rival. Kelly and Philip met while working as REALTORS® in Culpeper. They not only created an amazing partnership, but they found a career they both enjoy and respect. And when the opportunity came for the family to invest in themselves and their community, they jumped, purchasing RE/MAX Crossroads in early 2011. Local real estate was now their life. Do you know how much hard work and attention to detail it takes to be a top ranked REALTOR® and Broker? Neither did I until we sat down together and talked about their commitment and drive to professionalism. There’s a misconception that becoming a REALTOR® is not only easy, but immensely lucrative with little effort or experience required. In talking candidly with Philip and Kelly, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The role of a good REALTOR® is a serious one that carries great responsibility and infinite working parts to navigate.
Their drive towards being the best REALTORS® possible has been recognized locally, as annual top producers, Salesperson of the Year, Broker of the Year, Past-President/Board members of the Greater Piedmont REALTORS®, as well as nationally, having both been inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame. It’s very apparent when talking to this power couple they not only know what they are doing but want to put that knowledge to work for their neighbors and friends. They live here and know by helping its residents they are helping the community grow and prosper. Their core belief is “we are all in this together.” Culpeper has always been home and they want nothing but the best for their community. It all boils down to what should be most important: service, trust, experience, professionalism and results. Buying or selling a home might just be the largest financial transaction a person makes in their life, so picking the best REALTOR® has never been more important. A REALTOR® should always ensure you make the best possible decisions, while monitoring all the details, navigating the inevitable pitfalls, giving you confidence and taking away the stress … all with ease. So don’t just pick any REALTOR®, pick the local experts. They

Elevate Kristy Romeo & Aaron Wood Meet Kristy and Aaron Wood, the best combination of teamwork, drive, creativity and inclusivity. When they decided to open Elevate Co-Work & Community, they agreed Culpeper was the perfect spot. Both have long-standing ties to the community and both wanted to build something Culpeper would be proud to call its own. But more than that, Kristy and Aaron wanted the space to be appreciated and used by folks from all walks of life. The number of small business owners, entrepreneurs, telecommuters and remote workers is growing, especially in Culpeper, where the cost of living is lower and there is high demand for quality and inspiring work space.
familiar and comforting; it’s got an energy and vibe like no other, but it feels familiar. And you can feel inspiration not only from the space but also from the people who use it. Members share advice and support, creating a safe place to incubate new business ideas. Or they work alone while feeding off the energy of the room.
Thankfully the attitudes and perceptions toward co-working, remote working and shared spaces have changed, allowing for a place like Elevate to thrive. Sharing space is more economical than renting private office space, and it allows for a better work/ life balance with less time spent commuting. The connections made at Elevate lead to new connections, expanding the use of Elevate is a place to work, meet, host, play, create, inspire, lead, the space into social events, networking meet-ups, educational teach — and then some. It’s a community within a community, it’s a workshops, and more. Elevate is a microcosm of life, teaching us new way to work and share. That’s because Aaron and Kristy made all we work better together and we are not alone. Live locally, work it cool. Eagle Postal Express Paul & TG Farnam When asked what he does outside of work, there is an easy smile and a small laugh. “This is what I do outside work, this is my life. I’ve always wanted my own business, and I like helping people, so this is what I do,” says owner Paul Farnam. Well this is what they do. At Eagle Postal Express, Paul and TG work as a team to be your one-stop get-it-done shop.
There is also a prolific gift shop with cards, puzzles, and locally crafted earrings by Entwined and Designed. Ooh, and he’s a notary! When Paul sees a need in the community, he tries to fill it — a true jack of all trades. Well, a Paul of all trades. That’s why he and his wife opened their shop in the first place, to fill a need in the area.
Paul is a problem solver and loves a challenge. Every day is different and “no” is not in his vocabulary. He will get the job done in ways you probably didn’t think were possible. It’s Paul’s passion. And it shows in the variety of services he offers and continues to add. We all know Eagle Postal Express does shipping and receiving (including even large freight) and is a FedEx Authorized Ship Center, a DHL Service Point and a USPS Approved Postal Provider. But did you know he also rents both private mailboxes and digital mailboxes, has a FotoZoomer kiosk, prints and scans large format (such as blue prints, posters, banners), creates vinyl lettering, scans and prints old photos, digitally converts old VHS and reel-to-reel to DVD, prints on canvas, saddle stitches and binds booklets, and prints brochures.
Paul will calmly find a way to help and will always share a smile, even if you’re in a hurry...or grumpy. He has several customers that just stop by as part of their routine for conversation, to see what’s new in the store or to drop off some “thank you” cookies. Paul says the best part of his job is making his customers smile. He finds pride in giving quality service and advice. And he feels accomplished when a customer lights up when they see the finished print or knows their special package will get there on time and intact. Paul knows customers can go online or go to a quick print shop, but hey, you get what you pay for. At Eagle Postal Express, customers will get peace of mind and a finished product that will stand the test of time.

SMALL TOWN LIVING
Town of Culpeper Paige Read Paige Read is an exuberant force and champion of Culpeper because she believes in this area. As Director of Tourism and Economic Development she is responsible for promoting the Culpeper community. Building destination awareness, driving visitation, engaging investors, and fostering a home grown entrepreneurial spirit is easy to do with the support of elected officials and strong community organizations. It’s a team sport the heart of which is Culpeper’s businesses and entrepreneurs. There is an overwhelming feeling from all to invest in making Culpeper a great community. Paige sees it as a privilege to share the stories of local farmers, producers and artists helping to earn Culpeper the titles of “The Prettiest Town in Virginia” - Architectural Digest; “Great American Main Street” – National Trust for Historic Preservation; “The most underrated town in Virginia” – House Method; and “One of the Top 5 Trending destinations in Virginia” – Blue Ridge Country. Paige and Phil Sheridan, Director at Culpeper Department of Economic Development, are proud to support major industry
and local small businesses by leveraging local, state and federal grants, incentives and resources. A surprisingly more diverse economy of over 800 businesses call Culpeper home. Sectors range from nationally recognized manufacturing, agriculture and forestry production, advanced metal fabrication, adult craft beverages, finance and education, greenhouse food production and manufacturing, and a growing healthcare system. Downtown Culpeper boasts award-winning chef-owned restaurants and a high percentage of women-owned small businesses, and through the town’s investment in Culpeper’s Main Street program, visitors and residents alike enjoy year-round events and festivals! At Paige’s core is a belief in Cathedral Thinking, in all aspects of life. She feels all community developers should be educated in the principals of cathedral thinking, the foundation of which is a far-reaching vision. “We (the collective) have this wonderful opportunity to be a part of the story of Culpeper. It began long before us, and will continue long after. If we adopt a far-reaching vision in our strategies and decision making, we can influence the story in a way to better serve future generations.”

DOING BUSINESS IN CULPEPER COUNTY Economic Development of Culpeper Phil Sheridan Phil Sheridan is the Director of Economic Development for Culpeper County. But if you ask him he’ll say his job is all about building relationships to foster a business-friendly environment. The multi-department team includes Phil as well as Lori Loy from the County, Dave Reardon from the Small Business Development Center, and Paige Read from the Town. Their combined efforts cover the spectrum of economic development facets from large industry to small business, from entrepreneurism to tourism, and from County to Town. This team believes the Town and County are stronger when they combine their efforts and interconnect their programs. When businesses are looking for resources or answers, they don’t care about boundaries. The Economic Development team works to minimize boundaries so companies can focus on their business. The forward-thinking County and Town leaders have planned investments in Culpeper to manage the inevitable growth while maintaining our relaxed and elegant quality of life. Some of these investments are directed at the development of a
strong workforce to support local industry and prepare our young people for rewarding careers. Culpeper is training the local workforce with programs like Career Partners, Virginia Career Works, the new Career & Technical Education school, the Carver Center with its New Pathways Tech facility, and partnerships with Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center. All of these positive programs make Culpeper an attractive place to locate and grow your business. Culpeper’s population is growing faster than most of Virginia because of its quality of life, business opportunities, and central location. This area is a natural crossroads with diverse industries, bountiful resources and solid infrastructure. Phil is proud of Culpeper’s collaborative spirit; a spirit that has been making Culpeper more vibrant, more welcoming, and more attractive for decades. The County and Town Economic Development team embraces the broader, long-term view and believes in the vision that will continue to support exciting, balanced growth in Culpeper.

HAIR SALON
Z’s NuLook Salon Doris Zeitz It’s not just a hair salon — it’s Z’s living room, a welcome center, an eclectic shop, a place to relax. Doris “Z” Zeitz is proud to say that most people compare her salon to the one managed by Dolly Parton in Steel Magnolias. Z’s NuLook Salon is a place that will make you feel like home. That’s because Z has lived and worked in Culpeper for 30 years. The community is her family. Z not only helps you feel beautiful but also makes you feel loved and cared for. If you’re not already a friend you will leave as one with a hug and words of encouragement. Z also uses the salon to showcase her collections of lighthouses, nutcrackers and gingerbread people. They fill the place, so make sure you look high, low and in every corner so you don’t miss any. But don’t worry, she’ll point them out. Doris Zeitz has worked as a stylist for more than four decades. Yes, the salon offers shampoo, cut and style, roller sets,
coloring, highlights, balayage, ombre, foiling and perms. But it’s more than that. It’s a place to feel better about yourself and to feel cared for. And the salon is a place of philanthropic outreach. Z leads the Flamingos, a group that meets monthly to work on community projects, collect coats and “adopt” a needy child for Christmas. She also contributes to Angel Trees for Seniors and the local toy collection and distribution drive. Z loves the community and believes she is here to serve others. It shows in so many ways. Call and make an appointment today — Z isn’t retiring anytime soon — and she has a dedicated team at her side. As Z says, “God will have to take me from the salon while I’m working. Styling hair is my way to care for people.” You can contact stylists Arlene Brown or Virginia Kirk at 540-834-8637 for appointments, too.

EYE CARE
Eye Care of Virginia Dr. Miles Press Dr. Miles Press has been helping people see better and feel better for over 48 years. It all started when he was 16 years old working for local optometrist in his hometown in Harrisburg, PA. From there he went to optometry school in Boston and then served as a Captain in the Air Force Flight Surgeon’s Office making sure all the pilots could see correctly. He also started his own contact lens company, developed the first tinted soft contact lens, and helped developed special tints to help patients with eye deformities. He’s also worked for several large retailers as an independent optometrist and been on several medical missions in Peru to provide vision care to remote villages. He has seen it all and to say he is experienced all is an understatement. Dr. Press eventually made his way to Culpeper at Eye Care of VA where he cares for over 10,000 people between two locations. He enjoys helping people save their vision and with today’s
technologies he can diagnose eye disease quicker and more accurately, fix complex vision issues and treat eye problems associated with Diabetes. His specialty is contact lenses and can fit you for any activity or to fix various eye issues. Dr. Press is calm and caring, will follow through care over several years and has made a difference in the lives of his patients. That has made him proud to be an optometrist. He is still very active with Vision with a Purpose fitting underprivileged kids with glasses purchased from the Lion’s Club. Making sure people can see no matter what their background or income has truly been his life work and brings him joy. His wife Greta had a dream about an Ark and realized it was meant to explain her husband’s work: random acts of kindness. And that is why he was voted Culpeper’s Best of of the Best for several years and why his patients love and trust him.

MEDICAL
Wellspring Health Services Wellspring was created in Culpeper out of absolute necessity for the residents of Culpeper and the surrounding counties. While the president of the medical staff at Culpeper Medical Center, Dr. Khalid Athar observed first hand as people used the emergency room for urgent and primary care services and not purely for emergency services as the name implies. He observed patients needing to travel an hour or more out of town for lack of access to most specialists. He also observed the gap in care between urgent or episodic care and primary or chronic care. So three years ago Wellspring was created, a hybrid and combination of primary care and urgent care for the residents of Culpeper. Open seven days a week, 12 hours a day with complete care all in one place and in one practice.
This new model means shorter wait times for patients, care is consistent and traced, patients don’t have to travel out of town, and follow-up treatments are more accessible. Ten thousand plus people commute out of town so access to care outside normal doctor’s office hours is a necessity, Wellspring proudly fulfills. Wellspring is open late and over the weekends and holidays when care is needed. This might seem crazy but less than three years later Wellspring has grown to four service locations in Culpeper, and one in Madison with 12 different specialties like Dermatology, GYN, Mental Health, Pediatrics, Neurology, Weight Loss, Nutrition, Pain Management, Podiatry, ENT,
Wellspring Health Services • 15237 Creativity Drive, Culpeper, VA 16
Endocrinology, etc. The community has embraced this new kind of comprehensive health care closer to home. No need to travel out of county for high quality care and that is a perfect fit for Culpeper. Dr. Athar is optimistic and dedicated to solving problems. From an early age he knew he was going to be a physician, he has always wanted to help people and take care of people. “Every ‘problem’ is an opportunity to create and affect change,” said Dr. Athar. But the larger message is Wellspring is your healthcare partner. Wellspring is dedicated to keeping it local by adding more specialties and building trust with a strong clinical and administrative team.
Wellspring Family Practitioners include: John Sealander, MD, Ekram Guirguis, MD, Charles Okorie, MD, Bernadette Focazio, ANP, Stacey Ratigan, FNP, Sarah Russell, FNP, Anna McCary, FNP, Cindy Napier, FNP, Amber Mullins, FNP, Heather Cannova, FNP, Erin Jones, PA, Amy Rosenblum, PA, Brittany Van Wickler, PA, Abbigail Carruthers, PA, Susan Suleske, PA, Steve Winfrey, CRNA. CUSTOM FRAMING
Village Frameworks & Gallery Inc. Skip & Lou Price Walk into Village Frameworks and you’re surrounded by beautiful art and images, showcased by master craftsmanship. That’s because Skip and Lou are a great partnership with an eye for detail and a connection to the local arts community. They met in South Carolina, where Skip was a photographer and worked in a frame shop, and Lou was a geologist with an appreciation for preservation. When they got married, the couple decided to combine their skills and open a framing business of their own. They picked Culpeper because of Lou’s deep family roots and the potential for growth. So in 1990, Village Frameworks opened — and is still going strong here in Culpeper 30 years later. Every job is different, and that makes the work fun and interesting. But more importantly, it’s about trust. People bring in their precious treasures, personal memories and antiques to Skip and Lou for special care and the right display treatment. In doing so, customers share family stories, history and personal
anecdotes, making the work of framing much more fulfilling and educational. The customer loyalty is so strong, clients stay with them no matter where they move and recommend Village Frameworks so often the Price’s service territory has expanded to all the neighboring counties. Their customers have become lifelong friends. That level of confidence simply can’t be beat. Skip and Lou are respectful of your treasures and preserve them as they would their own memories. The local art community is also important to Skip and Lou, so they hang and sell original work of area artists. With three decades under their belts, Skip and Lou are doing it right. The couple each have unique strengths, which they bring to each project and to their customers every day. Village Frameworks is not a formal place; it’s relaxed and comforting. You’ll leave knowing they helped you preserve a memory with the best possible care.

INTERNATIONAL GIFTWARE
The Cameleer “What is a cameleer?” you may ask. A cameleer is the leader of a camel train. For Susan Bernhardt, the word “cameleer” evoked a vision of strings of camels trekking along the Silk Road, trading in exotic goods from earlier times. And for Bernhardt, “The Cameleer” seemed a natural name for a one-of-a-kind store. It all started in 1992. A small offering of Australian Aboriginal goods was sold in 100 square feet on East Davis Street in Downtown Culpeper under the name “Kungaku Arts,” the aboriginal Pitjantjatjara word for “women’s.” The initial Australian crafts sold were carved wood lizards and dot painted pottery from Central Australia. Didgeridoos, authentic boomerangs and aboriginal paintings rounded out the collection. Since then, the product selection has grown to represent more than 80 countries and has moved and expanded five times on the same block to become The Cameleer at 125 East Davis Street.
The product mix is in constant flux with the ebb and flow of traditional craft. Not only do the products need to be produced, but craftsmen must also master the complexities of wrapping, packing, filing paperwork and navigating the red tape of exporting their goods to America. Because of requests and suggestions, The Cameleer’s selection has expanded beyond Central Australian artifacts to include jewelry, clothing for men and women, linens, tableware, housewares, stationary, and anything else that might catch your fancy. Offerings are always changing, as are the countries represented, ranging from Argentina to Zimbabwe. A visit to the shop is like traveling abroad, but no plane ticket is required to start your around-the-world adventure, explore the global arts community and share its unique offerings.

DISTILLERY
Belmont Farm Distillery Chuck & Jeanette Miller Prohibition is over and we are still celebrating. Just 10 minutes south of downtown Culpeper is Belmont Farm Distillery, the first craft whiskey distillery in the USA and this coming April they will be celebrating 30 years of whiskey produced in a genuine solid copper pot still. Originally hidden to avoid the law and government they are now making sure everyone knows they are here. Come on out and experience the history, the family and folklore and the feel of real craftsmanship. When you walk into the tasting room you will be overwhelmed with smells and sights and the friendliness of the distillery. You’ll also probably meet Chuck and Jeanette who will take the time to give you a tour and share not only the history of distilled spirits in Virginia but of the building and of Belmont farm. The structure is made from an old local church with history-marked and burnt wood. The bottling equipment dates back to the 30’s and 40’s with modern updates.
Chuck will greet you with an easy smile, a firm handshake and friendly words while making you feel comfortable and like you grew up on the farm. He looks the part in full cowboy farm gear and is always ready to share a story. In fact, everyone working at Belmont enjoys sharing stories and encourages you to become part of the conversation and Americana history. To make and create fine distilled libations requires an engineering mind, hard manual labor and a love for what you do. It also helps they have an original still from 1933 allowing visitors to be pulled back in time and back into traditional craft and lore. Chuck, Jeanette, Jay and family love what they do and love sharing the story of distilled products in the U.S. Belmont is processing spirits the same way our ancestors did 400 years ago. It’s not only a fun way to learn about great tasting spirits and their creation but a way to connect to the human condition and history.

FLORIST Endless Creations Steve & Chris Cone Steve Cone grew up on a cattle farm and planned to go into the family business, but when the family sold it, he realized he needed another plan. His grandmother suggested he learn about plants and greenhouses, which led to Steve joining the FFA and later, meeting his wife, Christina. Since college the pair have always worked together in local greenhouses and later started their own landscape design and installation company. Endless Creations has existed for 30-plus years. It first started as a hobby selling high end fresh holiday centerpieces, traveling to larger towns to sell fresh florals at craft shows with two kids in the back of the car underneath all of the plants. Steve and Chris opened their first retail floral shop on Sunset Ln in 2014. Just a little over a year later Endless Creations moved to their current location at 211 W Evans St. after buying out Randy’s Flower’s when Randy Jones retired.
Did you know they have a full service floral and gift shop right here in Downtown Culpeper? Endless Creations provides floral services for weddings, funerals, birthdays and banquets but it’s also a beautiful shop with décor, candles, and chocolates from local artisans. All the plants and flowers used are from local distributors and farms keeping money in state. Walk down, say hi, and bring non-perishable food items, as Endless Creations also supports the local food pantries. Steve and Chris appreciate their deep roots in the area. They can name several generations of families they have serviced over the years. “We’ll create floral birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, funerals for the same family. Then it repeats with kids and grandkids,” said Steve. Word of mouth referrals prove they are more than the local florist. Endless Creations support the community and the community supports Steve and Chris. Their commitment is Endless and they will do whatever it takes to make your vision a reality.
