History

The Bull Run Mountains

Haymarket’s natural backdrop has a long, exciting history by John Toler

Looking to the west many new residences, and the hospital now under construction, are treated to a beautiful, natural scene that has been there for thousands of years, but still never fails to inspire. Nestled between two ridges in the mountains north of the village of Waterfall and bisected by Catharpin Run, Jackson Hollow, in particular has seen much history. Much of the mountain land nearby, including Jackson Hollow, is owned by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF), a state agency charged with protecting and preserving open space throughout the Commonwealth. The VOF purchased the 278-acre (more or less) Jackson Hollow tract in 1985, and since that time has taken measures to return the land to its native state. It is hoped that someday Jackson Hollow will be part of a conservation zone reaching from the Chapman-Beverley Mill to the Aldie Mill. Residential development in the Bull Run Mountains started over 40 years ago, but the land protected by the VOF – either through purchase or easements – will remain nature preserves in perpetuity. In Jackson Hollow, wildlife abounds, with only occasional visits by scientists studying the ecology, authorized hunters, VOF personnel and dedicated volunteers, who are the stewards of the land.

But this was not always so. Since early times, many people called the mountains and the hollow their home, tried to make a living there, or passed through the gaps on their way to someplace else.

William: the Story of Its Places and People. The sparsely populated area became known as the “Bull Run Settlement.”

Mountain lore tells of the cabin called “Hardpush,” the name its Early History of the Region owner gave it after he was chased by It is believed that the first inhabitants a pack of wolves and escaped only of the Bull Run Mountains were after being “hardpushed” up a tree members of the Dogue (or Doeg) for the night. Their presence in new nation. the area ended with the 1722 Treaty of Albany, wherein the Native American tribes agreed to stay west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

With the land safe for settlers, the hunting path became part of the Carolina Road, and a number of small homes and cabins were soon built in the Bull Run Mountains. “In the frontier days, which continued well past the middle of the 18th century, pioneers bought or leased small parcels of land, built cabins among the hills, and plowed the fields with the crudest of implements,” according to Prince

In the late 1700s, those traveling on the Carolina Road were subject to attacks by robbers, earning the sobriquet, “Rogue’s Road.” According to an article written by historian T. Triplett Russell in 1978, a man known as “Captain Harper” once made his headquarters in the Bull Run Mountains, and “…like Robin Hood, robbed travelers to benefit the poor.” Aware that a small part of their territory was in Prince William County, in the 1770s, Leeds Episcopal Parish established a chapel on the southern slope of the mountain near

In the drawing that appeared in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, 16-year-old Simon Kenton, born in the Bull Run Mountains, beats his rival, William Leachman. Hopewell Gap. In 1774, Rev. James Thompson, rector of Leeds, gave a compelling sermon there against the British Parliament, urging his congregation to support the people of Boston (who had recently held their Tea Party), and “…contribute towards supplying the country with arms and ammunition,” according to Mr. Russell.

Jackson’s Mill The headwaters of Catharpin Run spring from the mountain above Jackson Hollow, and by the late 1700s, a water-powered gristmill was built on the stream to serve the small farms in the mountains. It was owned by John Jackson, for whom the hollow was named. Contemporary accounts describe the mill as a substantial two-story stone structure built by slaves, who brought the stones from nearby quarries. Jackson’s Mill ground both wheat and corn, and had a millrace and a millpond that was large enough to be used for boating. West of the mill stood a 2 ½ story, eight-room stone house that was likely the home of Mr. Jackson’s son, John A. Jackson, or his miller. Nearby were some small cabins, and south of the mill was a cooper’s (barrel maker’s) shop. Sadly, no traces of this commercial/industrial complex remain today, and documentation is scant.

Robert Sinclair of The Plains, who traces his ancestors back many generations in Hopewell Gap, recalls finding a deposition involving Simon Kenton signed by his “five-times great-grandfather,” George Sinclair. In it, he noted that he once worked at Jackson’s Mill. A Prince William County Deed Book from 1817 also makes a reference to Jackson’s Mill. In this document, James Smith was appointed as one of the overseers of the county road, “… from the Bull Run Church leading to Historians have described the Bull Run Mountains west of Haymarket as a ‘…confusion of forest trails, Jackson’s Mill, to the county line,” deep gorges, dizzy heights and unscalable slopes.’ As this ageless view toward the Blue Ridge shows, the mountains also had strategic value during the Civil War. The property was sold by Jackson to Richard Graham, a merchant from Dumfries, and later passed to his son, James Brent Graham. A chancery suit, Graham vs. Graham, was filed in Fauquier County in 1834 that dealt with “riparian rights” on Catharpin Run.

There are two strategic gaps in the Bull Run Mountains that figured in the Civil War: Thoroughfare at the south, and Hopewell, near the middle. Added to that was the Manassas Gap Railroad, and the By then, the property was designated much-traveled Carolina Road, often Dr. Ewell’s cousin, Lt. Gen. Fighting in the mountains was of the guerrilla war sort, and often involved the “Gray Ghost,” Capt. John S. Mosby. Soon after his Partisan Rangers were organized in early 1863, their first mission was to deny Federal forces use of the Manassas Gap rail line. The narrow passage through the mountains at Thoroughfare Gap was the easiest place to launch attacks on the trains. Among the first wrecked there was the engine “Grapeshot,” followed by tearing up the rails between the Gap and The Plains. When work crews came to clear wreckage or repair the tracks, they too were harassed.

But not all of the military action in the mountains favored Mosby and his men. A carefully planned ambush at Ewell’s Chapel on the morning of June 22, 1863 could have been his last battle. Coming down from the mountain where they had spent the night, Mosby and his rangers passed by Dunblane. They soon encountered a small force of cavalrymen of the 17th

This map, which appears on the Civil War Trails sign at Antioch Baptist Church (‘You are Here’), shows the significant battles in the Bull Run Mountain area, as well as Camp Spindle, Capt. John S. Mosby’s prisoner-of-war camp. Pennsylvania Volunteers had been positioned at the chapel as a decoy, and Mosby charged them. At that point, the Rangers came under fire by 100 men of the 14th U.S. Infantry concealed behind the building, and attacked by about 30 Federal cavalrymen who had been hiding nearby. But the infantry-men's fire was poorly directed, and Mosby and his men scattered and galloped back up the mountain, briefly pursued by the enemy cavalry. “General Meade, who had ordered the ambuscade because of the frequency with which Mosby had visited Dr. Ewell’s, blamed the Infantry and expressed himself to Gen. O.O. Howard: ‘Thus the prettiest chance in the world to dispose of Mr. Mosby was lost,’” according to Prince William: The Story of Its Places and Its People.

Camp Spindle As a result of his frequent raids in the area, Mosby took many Federal prisoners. Some were confined at Camp Spindle, in the high ground above Jackson Hollow.

Confederate Gen. Richard S. Ewell, cousin of Dr. Jesse Ewell, was wounded at the Battle of Second Manassas and was taken to Dunblane to recover after losing his leg.

“Mosby remembered the Bull Run Mountains, with its confusion of forest trails, deep gorges, dizzy heights and unscalable slopes,” wrote Triplett Russell. “Within them, a small body of men could defend itself for months against an army of overwhelming size.” Prisoners held at the camp were “… compelled to cover their shelters with the branches of trees.”

blue uniforms that the picket lines thought it was a flank attack,” wrote Mr. Ramage. In addition to the enemy soldiers, they captured nine army wagons, 50 cavalry accouterments, and 123 horses and mules. Among the captives were two New York Herald reporters that Mosby released in order to “… build good public relations and tell the world what a gentleman he was,” according to contemporary accounts.

vantage point the scouts rolled a few boulders down the mountainside, fired their guns and gave a Rebel yell.

Mosby narrowly avoided being captured himself when a Federal force scoured the mountains searching for the camp. “The prisoners made as much noise as possible in an effort to attract rescue, but it bounced off the walls of the secluded valley,” according to Mr. Russell.

While Mosby escaped capture or worse by the end of the war, Dr. Ewell did not. He and Mrs. Ewell had lost much, including a son, Lt. Albert M. Ewell (1836-1862), and nearly all of their fortune.

Another incident at Jackson Hollow involving the Rangers was recounted in the Waterfall correspondent’s column in a 1936 edition of the Manassas Messenger. “Two or three of Mosby’s men once scared a company of Federal cavalry out of their wits when they were riding through Jackson Hollow. At a

“The Yanks thought half of Lee’s army was behind them. They came dashing through the village of Waterfall like forty whirlwinds. It is said the Yankees soon learned to be shy of the mountain trails, much to the contentment of the people, who never tired of giving praise to the men of Mosby’s command.”

Another son, John Smith Magruder Ewell (1828-1918), who served in the Confederate Commissary Department, was captured while on leave at Edge Hill, and also confined to the Old Capitol Prison. Part 2, to be published in January 2013, deals with postwar Civil War settlements, industry, Jackson Hollow Recreation Club, and efforts to preserve this unique area.

Mosby captured a large number of Federals in July 1863, as the Union armies moved south through the area after the Battle of Gettysburg. Attacking the enemy columns, “Mosby and 30 men captured 186 prisoners, so many that he established a temporary holding station in the Bull Run Mountains,” wrote James A. Ramage in Grey Ghost. “Camp Spindle, his only camp, held the prisoners until men could be spared to escort them south to Confederate lines. When the first party of 47 arrived at Lee’s picket line, there were so many

Capt. Mosby and his Partisan Rangers were ambushed at Ewell’s Chapel on June 22, 1863. Because of ineffective fire by infantrymen hidden near the chapel, the Confederates were able to escape back into the mountains. The chapel was demolished in the 1980s.

Fauquier Health Rotator Cuff Surgery Can Be Best Solution to Shoulder Pain Shoulders can be troublesome. They’re our most flexible joint, which means they’re also our most unstable joint. From little strains to serious dislocations, shoulder injuries are common. Rotator cuff tears alone affect nearly two million people every year in the United States. Orthopedic surgeon Ralph Garretson, M.D., explains that the rotator cuff is made up of the four tendons in the shoulder, which help hold the ball of the upper arm bone securely in the shoulder socket, and provide a fulcrum for overhead use of the arm. Dr. Garretson said, “Causes of a rotator cuff injury may include falling, lifting and over-thehead arm activities —like throwing a baseball, lifting weights or placing items on high shelves. The most common symptom of rotator cuff injury is pain. If you have shoulder pain while reaching up to wash your hair, bending your arm back while getting dressed or trying to carry something heavy, you may have an injury to your rotator cuff. Lying on the injured shoulder also can be painful.” If you have a rotator cuff injury, Sometimes, said Dr. Garretson, physical therapy can be an effective treatment for a rotator cuff injury. Physical therapy may take from several weeks to several months, depending on the minimally invasive surgery can get you injury. Other rotator cuff injury treatments can include steroid injections or surgery. back in the game. Dr. Garretson said that if you have a tear in your rotator cuff, you may need surgery to repair the tear. (Sometimes during this kind of surgery doctors also may remove a bone spur or calcium deposits.) Dr. Garretson repairs rotator cuff injuries using minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. This technique requires a few tiny incisions, through which a small camera is inserted. The tear in the rotator cuff is repaired using instruments inserted through the same incisions. Because there is very little damage to the muscle in and around the shoulder, recovery time is shorter than with traditional surgery. Marshall Doeller, of Marshall, had rotator cuff surgery about a year ago, and says he is “good as new.” He had sustained a small tear in the rotator cuff, then fell and did some serious damage. “Dr. Garretson said it was the second-worst case he’d ever seen. I couldn’t throw a baseball, couldn’t bale hay, couldn’t play golf. I wasn’t able to lift my arm above my shoulder and couldn’t lift anything over 5 pounds. Now I have full use of the arm, and can do anything I could do before. The surgery was a complete homerun!” Dr. Garretson said, “Arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery has a very high success rate, with a very low incidence of complications. Depending on the size of the tear and the age of the patient, the success rate is as high as 95 percent.”

Fauquier Health CEO Wins Distinguished Service Award Rodger Baker, president and CEO of Fauquier Health, received the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s Distinguished Service Award at the VHHA’s annual meeting on November 8. The VHHA’s Distinguished Service Award is given to health system leaders who have made “exemplary contributions to the hospital and health system community through leadership, management, education, research or service.” Rodger Baker has led Fauquier’s health system for more than 35 years, taking it from a small community hospital to a 97-bed, state-of-the-art facility with a 33-bed emergency department, a nursing home/rehabilitation facility, assisted living facility, wound healing center and wellness center. Most significantly, Fauquier Hospital was named a Planetree-Designated Hospital in 2007. The hospital was one of the first five Planetreedesignated facilities in the country. Robin Gulick, attorney and member of the Fauquier Health System board of directors, spoke at the award ceremony. Rodger Baker, He said, “Rodger is a great leader. Through every decision he makes, every new initiative he spearheads, Rodger’s president and CEO of genuine concern is always synonymous with the mission of the hospital: to restore, promote, and maintain the Fauquier Health health of the community.” 14

Is your body suffering from a slow leak? Have you ever had one of those days when you looked in the mirror and wondered, “how in the heck did I get so out of shape? How could I have let myself go like this?” To be honest, nowadays it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of our life and family commitments. Heck, there are only so many hours in a day right? If we look hard enough, it’s real easy to come up with excuses as to why we can’t find an hour, or even just 30 minutes per day to exercise. The same can be said about eating right too. How can you expect to eat right when you’re running from one meeting to the next at work, and when you’re not at work, you often find yourself running from soccer games to swim lessons. Making a pit stop at Mickey D’s to grab a burger and fries is about the only choice you’ve got (or at least that’s what you tell yourself).

Unfortunately, this is what happens to a lot of folks when starting a career and family. Work and family priorities get pushed to the front, while others, like exercise and nutrition, get pushed to the side. Before they know it, one day they wake up, look in the mirror, and wonder what happened to the body they had in college, and who the heck is that fat person staring back at them? My boot campers know that I’m a straight shooter and don’t sugar coat things much, so please allow me to be blunt. Packing on extra pounds and body fat during middle age can often be compared to getting a flat tire, however, this flat tire doesn’t occur as a result of a blowout, but rather is the result of a slow leak that we have allowed to occur over time. These are the type of slow changes that no one really notices until the tire is completely flat. In this case, the slow changes that we’ve allowed to occur over time are more often than not due to lack (or absence) of exercise, eating the wrong foods, and in many cases, eating way too much of the wrong foods! There is good news however, and that is you can always change a flat tire, and you can always change your habits. Middle age is NOT an excuse to get fat or become a slug. The bad news is that changing a tire is painful, and you cannot change the tire the same way it went flat, which was slowly. If you want to make the change bad enough,

you have to be willing to jump in with both feet and make drastic changes right away so that you can get back on the road and driving again. Of course, you don’t have to wait until the tire becomes completely flat either. If you realize you’re driving around with a low tire, than pull-over and fix it. As a Master Fitness trainer and creator of Gladiator Fitness Boot Camps, I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of training and witnessing clients make incredible body transformations over the years. Fed up with how far they had let themselves go, and fed up with being out of shape, out of energy, and out of excuses, these clients made the decision and commitment to make health and fitness a priority in their lives. Sure it’s true, we are all ‘busy’ these days, and it’s real easy to find excuses why we cannot exercise and eat right, but I’m here to tell you that losing pounds of unwanted body fat can be accomplished by committing to just 30 minutes of exercise per day and learning how to ‘eat clean.’ Having the body you once had in your twenties is not only possible, with the right discipline, effort, and consistency, it’s very possible to have even a better body than you had in your twenties. My advice is to check your tires regularly as you may find out you’re running dangerously low.

Creating Interior Spaces that are Fun and Stylish for Kids and Adults By Paola McDonald

Can a space meant for playful kids be adult friendly as well? Absolutely! Can a family room full of kids’ toys look and feel great for parents as well? Without a doubt! And as well it should. Pinterest.com and Houzz.com as well as many major magazines are filled with photos of rooms that are as fun and functional for adults as they are for children. Families today are spending much more time together and much more time at home than they used to. They are choosing to spend their time enjoying each other’s company. This is reflected in the way home builders are creating more open floor plans and larger family/recreation rooms. Homeowners are knocking down walls in older homes to create more open spaces where family can feel more together. Many of my design clients these days are requesting that I help them design spaces that their entire family can enjoy, spaces that are comfortable and functional for the way they want to use their home. They want spaces that serve Horizontal stripes in this family room are fun and whimsical but the grey blue tones keeps it adult friendly. 18

Creative storage and easy to live with furnishings create a fun movie watching area for the whole family. Fun colors keep the room light while a neutral backdrop keeps it adult friendly. many functions, allowing their children to play and hang out with friends, but also for hanging out together as a family, watching movies, playing games, and enjoying each other’s company. Whimsy, creativity and out of the box thinking helps to create multi-functional spaces that all members of the family can enjoy individually or together. You can have a space that is fun and creative for your kids to play and hang out that also has grown up comfort and style. They can be spaces that look great, reflecting all members of the family’s likes and tastes. Most importantly, they can be spaces that are functional for everyone, providing space for each family member’s things and the possessions, passions and past-times of the family as a whole. It just takes a little imagination, careful planning and some consideration for all members of the family. 20

Here are a few tips and strategies for creating spaces that all members of your family can enjoy: Use grown up colors in a fun and creative way. Consider stripes, blocking, accent walls, even wallpaper and wall stickers to add creativity and whimsy to your space. Accent walls in fun and unique colors can add a lot of style and interest to a space without overwhelming it. Vertical or horizontal painted stripes are a fun and easy way to add a lot of character and personality. However, choosing to do these things in more sophisticated colors, like more muted or greyed blues and greens and/ or muddied oranges can keep the space from feeling too childish. Geometric wallpapers or stencils can have the same effect.

Delineate spaces using color, pattern and texture. Using the above-mentioned techniques in certain areas of your space can help to define and differentiate function in those spaces. For example, using fun stripes or patterned wallpaper in the kids play area, with solid colors in the family hang out area can help define and delineate spaces in a unique way, can help create flow in the room and again, keeps the space from becoming too childish in style. Use furniture and fabrics to help define spaces. Along with using paint colors and patterns, you can also use furniture placement to define and delineate the function of your spaces. For example, you can use your sectional sofa to act as a border between your lounging space and your kids play area. The size and style of area rugs can also

help to define the children’s play area from the family lounging area from the homework area, etc. The kid’s area rugs can be more whimsical and fun in pattern while the family/adult area rugs can be a little more subdued and muted. You may also consider using stationary drapery panels to create a stage and separate the kids’ play area from the other family hang out spaces. This can also serve to help conceal some of the inevitable kid’s toy mess from the rest of the family area. You can also create room dividers out of curtains or sliding track panels (typically used for French doors or tall windows) to create temporary room dividers that can help conceal mess, provide privacy and create multiple spaces if necessary. They can also be quite decorative and decorator continued on page 22 Haymarket Lifestyle

stylish. Get creative with how you define how the different spaces will be used and give consideration to who they are geared towards. Think function with creative storage. Families need storage, particularly when young kids are involved. But storage doesn’t have to be all function and no style. On the contrary, storage can serve multiple functions and can be incredibly stylish. Consider built-ins or bookcases that can provide plenty of storage for both kid and adult toys. Add pops of your accent colors to your storage by painting the backs of your built-ins. You can have a lot of fun and add varying contrasting or coordinating colors to each block or area of your cabinet or bookcase. You can even add fun wallpaper in a contrasting pattern to the wallpaper on your walls. Consider also colorful bins or baskets to organize the whole family. Prior to purchasing or designing your storage system really consider what needs to be stored, who will be using the storage and how. Work with your designer or cabinet-maker to ensure that each area of your storage unit will work for the size and types of items that will require storage. Make sure that it is functional useful because this can be a big investment. Take stock of both kids and adult toys

My own basement family room. I chose to paint horizontal stripes to define my children's play area. Two large photo canvases of my children make me smile every time I look at them (photos by Julie Kubal Photography). I chose fun patterns for my accent pillows and ottomans but did them in more grown up colors. and consider your needs as your family grows. What your children play with now will likely not be what they play with in a couple of years. Consider how your storage will grow up with your family. Get creative with artwork and accessories. There is so much you can do with art and accessories to really help give a space style and add child and adult friendly whimsy. Choose a kid friendly theme, like flowers, letters or numbers and find great artwork in these themes that has a modern, grown up vibe. Accessories could include painted block letters (the initials of family members are always fun) or block numbers, metal jacks or vintage airplanes. Whatever your theme, you can find fun accessories that are

whimsical or abstract that can be represented in an adult friendly way. Punches of color in your accent pillows, throws and window treatments can also serve to give personality and help keep a space light without being overwhelming or giving it a childish feeling. Again, choose fun geometric patterns in more adult friendly colors. Or consider bolder, brighter, more child friendly colors while keeping little to no pattern in the fabrics. The trick is to juxtapose the fun, colorful side of childhood without overwhelming the entire room. Don’t be afraid to use your family as art. Family spaces should be fun and welcoming and should be representative of all members of the family. Use your family photos (as many

of them as you want), or the kids’ artwork to add pops of color, and personality to your family spaces. Create a rotating gallery of your kids artwork and/or photos. Create a fun feature wall with colorful frames that house your children’s artistic pieces and beautiful faces. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t use family photos or that you use too many family photos. Your family is the most priceless art you possess and you can and should show them off. Be Creative. Your home should reflect you and your family’s personality. It should be a place where you are surrounded by the people you love and the things you enjoy most. Don’t be afraid to get creative with how you pull your home together. Have fun with your paint treatments, use fun accent pillows, rugs, window treatments and artwork. Let your family’s true personality shine in the décor of these spaces. Family spaces should truly reflect the personality of your family. With some creativity and input from all members of your family, you can easily create a fun, stylish, comfortable and functional space that all members of your family, and your guests will truly enjoy for years to come.

The event is set for 7 p.m. on Dec. 15 in the auditorium at Battlefield High School, 15000 Graduation Drive in Haymarket. Tickets are $10 with lap children admitted free.

“I try to be creative every year in coming up with the theme, and I woke up the very next morning after last year’s show with the inspiration to do ‘Circus at the North Pole.’ ” - Angela Knight

Knight and her team of volunteers start work on the Christmas production in August, although this year’s theme came to Knight much earlier. “I try to be creative every year in coming up with the theme, and I woke up the very next morning after last year’s show with the inspiration to do ‘Circus at the North Pole.’ ” Knight describes the annual labor of love as “sort of a bridge ministry.”

Knight is a classically trained lyric coloratura soprano who performs regularly with the Washington National Opera. Along with a group of dedicated volunteers, Knight is going on her fifth year of presenting the Christmas benefit, the theme of which changes yearly, as do the charities assisted.

“I feel like my purpose is to connect people to God through music,” she explains. Similarly, she uses the seasonal production to help people in the community who are “going through a bridge time,” such as a catastrophic event or illness.

Bridging Needs

She describes “Circus at the North Pole” as Christian theater. “You’re going to really feel like you’re at a circus, but you’re going to feel God’s love too.”

Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit a local chapter of Child Help, an organization that helps victims of abuse and neglect, as well as the Rainbow Riding Center, which provides therapeutic equestrian activities to individuals with physical and mental challenges, primarily children. “We try to keep the beneficiaries close to home. It’s community supporting community,” says Knight, noting that a variety of performers, some professionals, donate their time and talent to the endeavor, which allows her to keep costs down so that there is more to pass on to the designated charities.

Something for Everyone

The production features many classic Christmas elements such as traditional carols, Santa Claus and elves, but it also has elements of a three-ring circus, including clowns, dancing troupes, tumblers, a parade of dogs and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Snowman.” All this is tied together with a 15-piece band and a dozen or so singers, including Knight. “This is really my passion,” Knight says. “I’ve been doing this show for five years, and it keeps growing and growing. My biggest challenge is just getting the word out.”

Tickets for “Circus at the North Pole” can be purchased through PayPal by visiting Knight’s website at www.AngelaKnightMusic. com. Tickets are also on sale at Music & Arts in Manassas and Contemporary Music Center in Haymarket. In addition, tickets will be available at the door as long as seats are available. Additional donations will also be accepted at the door on the evening of the performance. 26

HAYMARKET GAINESVILLE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

ARE YOU READY FOR TAXMAGEDDON? By Tim Mauk

Now that all of the political advertisements are behind us, get ready for Taxmageddon!!! You may have heard or read about the “fiscal cliff” or “tax cliff.” All of these new catch phrases refer to impending changes in our federal income tax structure. Barring congressional action, dramatic tax increases are scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2013. Some of the more significant federal tax changes scheduled to occur are as follows: •

Individual income tax rates will be increasing. The maximum income tax rate will increase to 39.6% from 35%. All but one of the other income tax brackets will have higher tax rates.

The maximum capital gains rate will increase to 20% from 15%. This will impact any gain on the sale of capital assets (e.g., stock sales).

The maximum qualified dividends tax rate was previously 15%. The new rate will be your marginal income tax rate, which could be as high as 39.6%. Also, if your income exceeds a certain threshold, this tax rate will be increased by the 3.8% Medicare surtax, which could result in a maximum tax rate of 43.4%.

The new 3.8% Medicare surtax on net investment income will be assessed if your modified adjusted gross income (“MAGI”) exceeds $250,000 (married filing joint) or $200,000 (single). Net investment income includes taxable interest, dividends, annuity income, royalties, net capital gains from the sale of investments (including second homes and rental properties), income from passive activities and rental income. The estate/gift tax exemption is decreasing to $1,000,000 from $5,120,000, and the maximum estate/gift tax rate will increase to 55% from 35%.

• Although nobody knows which changes our legislators may make, we do know what will happen if they take no action…and this we can plan for. Planning for these likely tax changes is a major undertaking and it is best to begin the process now. A brief summary of some tax planning opportunities to deal with these impending changes is covered below. •

Appreciated capital assets could be sold in 2012 and immediately reinvested in the same or similar assets. This technique, known as capital gain harvesting, results in paying a lower tax rate but recognizing the gains earlier. Consider accelerating ordinary income into 2012 to take advantage of the currently lower tax rates. The savings are even greater if you will be subject to the 3.8% Medicare surtax. Itemized deductions will be phased out in 2013 for high-income taxpayers. As the phase-out rules do not apply in 2012, accelerating itemized deductions into the 2012 tax year may be prudent.

For those subject to the 3.8% Medicare surtax, consideration should be given to implementing strategies to reduce MAGI or net investment income. Maximizing retirement plan contributions, cafeteria plan contributions and tax-exempt investments are some options. With significant changes in the estate tax exemption and tax rate, it is a good time to consider making large gifts and/or establishing trusts for family members before January 1, 2013. This year may be the last opportunity to achieve a significant amount savings in federal estate/gift taxes.

This article only briefly addresses the upcoming tax changes and related planning opportunities. Planning for these tax changes is complex and careful consideration should be given to any tax planning strategy. Please address your 2012/2013 tax situation before the end of 2012. If you wait until 2013, it will be too late.

You Know You are Addicted to Gardening When: • You spend more time and energy on your garden than the inside of your house. • Your car automatically pulls over when you pass a garden store. • You always have a sheet of plastic in your car. • You talk to your plants and ask how they are doing and encourage them to do better. • You discuss plants with strangers at garden stores and give advice on selections.

• You know Joyce Chen is not soy sauce. • You have damaged your car using it as a truck. • You shop for a new car with the main criteria being how many plants it can hold. • You have considered leaving your spouse/ children/friend/parent at the plant store so you can fit everything in the car. • You keep a wish list of plants in your purse at all times.

• Christmas really starts when next year’s plant catalogs start arriving in the mail.

• You look for gardens and garden stores while on vacation – even if you flew there.

• You have to do emergency work on your hands before parties.

• You think maybe deer won’t find it in your yard.

• Employees in the garden store ask You for advice.

• You will find a place to put it SOMEWHERE.

• You have 4 pairs of shoes on the porch all covered in mud.

• You know the real BS is Black Spot.

• You deadhead everywhere: plant stores, restaurants, parks, neighbors… • You can find your garden gloves faster than your car keys.

• You rejoice in rain. • You have read all of the above and instead of laughing you nodded your head in agreement.

Erupting with Flavor

Volcano Hot Stone Grill A casual, fine dining restaurant is erupting with flavor in Gainesville. Volcano Hot Stone Grill offers a special interactive dining experience where guests cook their meals on a individual volcanic stone. Heated for six to eight hours the stones reach temperatures of 550 degrees; they are lightly sprinkled with Alaea Hawaiian sea salt and set with meat or vegetables. Crackles and intense aromas greet guests at the table as the stones begin to cook their entrées. The extreme heat from the stone helps lock in the juices for tender, flavorful food cooked to personal preference in taste and temperature. Enjoy an appetizer or two while waiting for your stones to heat up. The Heirloom Bruschetta is colorful with diced heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and Vermont cheddar delicately set on top of a crostini. The Duck Carpaccio is juicy with lightly seared breast of duck, seasoned and thinly sliced with mesclun greens and

a sweet orange marmalade chutney. Their Cheese Fondue is ideal for sharing with four options; try the Artichoke and Spinach with artichoke hearts and spinach blended with Parmesan, mozzarella and cream cheese. The Soups and Salads here are plentiful and come in two portion sizes: half and full. The Wild Mushroom Salad is a customer favorite as the plate is piled high with sautéed confit of wild mushrooms on a bed of Boston bib lettuce accented with an apple vinaigrette and crumbled wild boar bacon. The Volcano Chopped Salad boasts chopped heirloom tomatoes, carrots, red onion, yellow squash, romaine and bib lettuce all tossed in an avocado vinaigrette. Their salads pair perfectly with soup; just ask the server for the soup of the day. Their Hot Rock Entrées are captivating as guests are able to cook their preferred meats or vegetables to taste. Enjoy the sound of sizzles with the

succulent Tenderloin Filet, a grass fed New Zealand Angus aged to perfection. Scallops and Prawns are a great seafood choice with three jumbo sea scallops and six prawns accompanied by rock-grilled green onions. A substantial vegetarian choice is the Portabella Mushroom packed with feta, baby spinach and sun-dried tomato with a balsamic glaze and set with a black bean doughnut. By far the most popular entrée is the Wild Plate, guests have the choice of any two, 4 oz. medallions of wild game available. The menu changes rapidly but currently elk, wild boar and kangaroo are available. All entrées are served with fresh vegetables, a choice of starch and a variety of sauces for dipping. The Chef’s Features are true artistic creations that are equally as satisfying without the interaction with the hot stone. The Twin Tenderloin Tornados are a marriage of land and sea with a filet topped with a smoked crab cake and a sliced scallop, pan

seared and finished with a sun-dried tomato aioli. Panko and blueberry flour dusted chicken breast filled with a red wine mascarpone cheese, pan seared with a whole grain mustard beurre blanc served with mesclun greens, heirloom tomatoes and parsnips with a chardonnay vinaigrette make the Blueberry Chicken.

This restaurant is certainly not dormant, gather your friends and family and get active. Volcano Hot Stone Grill is located at 14706 Lee Highway in Gainesville near Nora Restaurant. They are open seven days a week Monday through Thursday 4pm to 9pm, Friday 4pm to 10pm, Saturday 11:30am to 10pm and Sunday 11:30am to 9pm. If you are looking for an amazing champagne for your Holiday festivities this year, you can have one of the best, and it happens to be made right here in Virginia. Thibaut Janisson is a joint venture between Champagne’s Manuel Janisson and globe-trotting winemaker Claude Thibaut. After earning his winemaking degree from the University of Reims in the heart of France’s Champagne region, Claude worked with wineries in France, Australia and California before being recruited by Kluge Estate in Virginia in 2003. He launched his own label in 2007, and the results have been nothing short of outstanding. Charlottesville, VA (434) 996-3307 http://www.tjwinery.com/

The Reviews: “I wish that the Thibaut-Janisson Blanc de Chardonnay from Virginia was sold in California. I’d purchase a case of it straightaway, as it displays true Champagne character from Virginiagrown grapes.” - by Linda Myrphy of WineReviewOnline.com “The Thibaut- Janisson Blanc de Chardonnay sent to me this summer was a joy to drink -- delicate, sophisticated ... It’s elegant and suave, with minerality and subtle notes of apple, white peach and yeast - serious sparkling wine from a region not expected to produce it.” - Jancis Robinson of discountvino.com
