A GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING

the mason bee house is a sweet handmade gift for friends and mother earth Mason bees are one of 20,000 different species of native bees in North America. They are highly efficient pollinators and rarely sting. We can encourage their survival as well as have fun by making Mason bee houses for ourselves and as gifts. Mason bees are small, metallic blue-black insects that are very beneficial. Two hundred and fifty Mason bees can pollinate the same acre of an apple orchard that twenty five thousand Honeybees would be needed for. Mason bees are not subject to the parasitic mite that is killing Honeybees although Mason bees are affected by pesticides and loss of natural habitat. Mason bees do not have a Queen so they do not get angry and feel the need to attack or defend their hive. In fact, the males do not even have stingers. This makes Mason bees safe to have around children and pets and easy to get close to and study.

There are plenty of ways to make Mason Bee Homes. This one is made from parcel paper. photo credit: solitarybee.com

Mason Bee Houses can be decorative accessories to your backyard too. photo credit: bohemianpages.blogspot.com

The bees emerge from dormancy early in the spring, right about the time the Redbuds bloom. The previous spring the females collected pollen and nectar and made a pollen ball at the end of a tube and then laid an egg on it. She collected mud and created a wall in front of the egg. She repeated the process up to eight times with the female eggs laid first in the back and the males up front. The males are in the front because they are closer to predators - protecting the females. The males emerge first and wait for the females so they can mate. That is the only function of the male. The female collects the pollen and nectar, lays the eggs, and builds the walls over a period of four to six weeks and then she dies. Mason bees do not drill their own holes for nests. They lay their eggs in hollow stems, Woodpecker holes and other insect holes. We can encourage these wonderful and gentle bees by building houses for them. One way is to get a block of soft wood that is at least 4 inches by 8 inches. Drill holes that are 5/16 of an inch wide and 6 inches long on a ¾ inch center. Shorter or narrower holes encourage male eggs not female. Position this “bee house” with a southeastern exposure to catch morning sun and at least 3 feet off the ground to discourage predators. The other way that I prefer (because it is so easy) is to make the house out of groups of hollow bamboo sticks. Cut them about 6 inches long, bunch them together and secure it all with twine. I like to hold it together with a big rubber band before I tie it off. Female Mason bees are sort of picky – they don’t like to reuse a tube so there is always a need for new houses. This holiday season make them for yourself, your friends and the Earth.

Building a Successful Fitness Program by Colby Schreckengost BS, MS, CPT

For about three decades, from 1970-1990, the fitness industry was stagnate and held us to the Arnold Schwarzenegger knock-off bodybuilding workouts for men or the Jane Fondaesque group fitness aerobic and step class workouts for women. Around the year 2000, training started an upward trend toward more functional training and calisthenic oriented programming. Since then, the fitness industry has been changing and constantly evolving - not always in a good way. I’ve been working out since the age of 13 and I’ve seen or been a part of just about everything the industry has had to offer over the past 35 years. I can honestly say that there has never been a better time to start a fitness program than today; if you can find the right program. 8

The key is making the right choice among seemingly endless choices and opportunities. What will motivate you? What is safe and effective training, and will it help you reach your fitness goals? Do you enjoy the solitude of long runs or does working out with a group really sound fun? The fitness industry can often be its own worst enemy, getting caught up in the “latest and greatest” fitness trends and putting the onus on the consumer to make a smart choice. It seems like there is a new program or training tool coming out every day. Quick-fix and predominantly false promises like the Ab Coaster or Buns of Steel are popular DVD’s that never live up to the hype. Why? The models on the infomercials

look great and speak volumes about how great the program is, but these programs won’t work because they don’t provide actual lifestyle changes that you the consumer can implement on a daily basis. New training tools like TRX, Kettle bells and extreme core trainers are great as a tool in your fitness program, but are they really making changes in your life or just keeping you from fitness boredom? Lately, popular training systems like Zumba, Tabata Bootcamps, Insanity, P90X, Training for Warriors, and Crossfit, have burst on the scene and changed the fitness landscape by way of media hype and great marketing, but are they right for you? fitness program continued on page 10 Haymarket Lifestyle

fitness program continued from page 8

There is no one-size-fits-all fitness program. It would be simple for me to say that what Next Level offers is the best for everyone and recommend you come in for an evaluation, but not every fitness program suits every lifestyle, schedule, commitment level or motivation. In this article I would like to discuss a few fitness possibilities, philosophies and training environments and how to find the best environment for you. Home Gym: It takes a special person to motivate themselves on a daily basis to go to the basement and train on their own. A friend of mine is a new mom and she has done an awesome job transforming her body using DVD’s in her basement at 5:00 am in the morning. I give her credit for her commitment. But, just take a look at Craigslist and you will see hundreds of “barely used, like new” pieces of exercise equipment for sale by very well-intentioned people. In concept, it sounds like a great idea: workouts anytime, cheap, never have to leave the house or the kids. It’s a very solemn proposition and I applaud the folks that can actually accomplish their fitness goals on their own, especially when they are truly alone in the effort. Traditional Main Stream Health Club: Big box health clubs are what we call in the industry, “the do everything gym.” You pay a monthly fee and get access to all of the amenities the gym has to offer. Good examples of this type of gym include LA Fitness or One Life. On the plus side you’ll get access to a lot of different programs and it’s good for variety. It’s generally a good value if you like managing your own fitness, charting your own progress, and rarely seek advice on your fitness program. On the downside; most big box gyms are very crowded at peak times, rarely do they know who you are, customer service is minimal and if you don’t really have a plan for exercising, it can be tough figuring out what to do. Most of the larger gyms tend to be heavily focused on selling memberships and not as concerned with serving customers or getting results. Outdoor Boot Camps: Boot camps have become popular and a lot of people really enjoy being physical outside in the elements. The training is usually very motivating and also has pretty high camaraderie. The downside can be that the limited equipment leads to limited exercise variety and unpredictable weather can sideline your routine in short order. I have a lot of respect for the boot campers. If you’re thinking of going in this direction, be sure that your fitness level is fairly high and you have a good supply of gloves, hats and ear muffs for the cold months. Group Training: If you like the camaraderie of working out with others and really enjoy being pushed a little by your peers, then group training might be what you are looking for. Groups can be fun and motivating, but the key to success is having top notch coaches that not only are willing to constantly correct exercise form in order for you to get the most out of your sessions, but should be in tune with any physical limitations you have as well. Training in groups can help keep cost down when you need instruction and interaction, but don’t want to splurge for individual attention. One-on-One Personal Training: Whether it’s with a trainer at a big box gym or in a studio or training facility, the 1-on-1 training scenario can be a great choice for you, particularly if you have not worked out in a long time or have physical limitations that might preclude you from participating in a more general exercise program. The trainer can build a program to suit your individual needs and create some accountability, which can really help when trying to achieve your goals. It can get pricey paying for this type of training and at times these workouts can turn into counseling sessions so be sure that you are getting what you pay for and stay focused on your goals. fitness program continued on page 12 10

Yoga Studios: Yoga is a good exercise choice for just about anyone. The flexibility and relaxation that you get from a good session of yoga, can really help to relieve stress and increase your mobility, but if your intention is to really change your body and lose some fat, you will probably have to augment yoga with other more rigorous exercise. Cross-Fit: These types of facilities have been popping up everywhere and for good reason. People that train at most Cross-fit gyms make tremendous improvements in their fitness and strength and really see dramatic differences in their bodies. But, beware that all Cross-fit facilities are not created equal. If you are new to exercise, these workouts can be very challenging and you must absolutely discuss your plans with your physician before starting it. Most Crossfit workouts involve intense Olympic lifting and a lot of muscle endurance activities that can become very competitive. Beware, especially if you’re over 40 and just getting back into exercise. Kettlebell Gyms: If you are not familiar, Kettlebells are steel balls of varying weight, with a handle on them. They are a great tool for helping you get fit, but Kettlebells are just “a tool” and

should be used as such. I’m not a big fan of creating a training program around one tool in particular. They definitely have their merits, but should be used in conjunction with other tools at the gym. As the end of the year approaches and we begin to feel that pressure to make a resolution to get back in shape, it’s a good idea to utilize the following criteria when plotting your course: Rule #1: “Do No Harm” Beginner’s tend to get hurt a lot when starting new programs, be sure that you select a program that comes with good coaching and support. Rule #2: Train hard, but train smart. Listen to your body. Push it when it feels good and throttle back on the tough days. Rule #3: Don’t set goals that are out of reach. Start off just 3 days per week and increase as your fitness gets better. Rule #5: Try before you buy! See if the facility that you are considering has a trial membership. That way you can see if you will be comfortable in the environment, if it will truly meet your needs, or if it fits in your schedule. Rule #6: Does the program deliver results? Ask about their clients’ success stories. Ask your friends. Do you get the

sense that they care about you and your progress? Ask how they will help hold you accountable. Rule #7: Do they offer nutritional support? You can’t out train a poor diet. If you work out one hour per day and stuff your face with donuts and diet cokes the other 23, you’ll never reach your goals. Rule #8: Understand your role. There has to be some internal motivation. Trainers can’t come to your house and get you out of bed for your workout. Are you up for the challenge? Are you interested in getting fit or are you desperate enough to do something about it? At Next Level, it’s actually very simple; we utilize the most effective training systems and “bang for your buck” tools we know of today and incorporate them into our private and group training programs. Before implementing any new programs or tools, we evaluate their effectiveness to ensure that it is safe and the right fit for our clients and their needs. As you make plans for how to make your new year the best ever, make sure that whatever it is, it’s the right choice for you. If in 4-weeks’ time, it’s not working for you, make a change. But set a course and get started!

5 tricks by: Esther Boykin

to Having the Perfect Holiday Season The holiday season is one of my favorite times of year. It’s a time when families focus on giving and spending time together. It’s a time for delicious meals full of comfort foods and parties with friends and neighbors. It’s also often a time of stress, as we many of us work to create the perfect holiday for our families. What does the perfect holiday look like? Well that answer varies from person to person and family to family. For some people it’s all about decorations and for others it’s about the parties or religious celebrations. Despite the variety of holiday ideals,

there are some tricks to having a ‘perfect holiday’ season that apply to all of us- no matter what we celebrate or who we are.

1. Don’t underestimate the power of tradition.

There’s a reason that religious holidays involve specific rituals and ceremonies. These traditions are a part of what brings people together in a spirit of common values and connection. And they are what makes for a perfect family holiday as well. Whether you light a menorah, attend Christmas Eve church services, or just like to spend this time of year with

family, it’s important to create your own traditions at home. And the chances are you’ve already got several. You may not think that you are creating a family ritual when you frost sugar cookies with your husband or everyone gathering to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas together on the couch, but these small activities have a big impact on how connected a family feels to each other. Research has shown, and I’m sure your own experiences will confirm, that being able to count on the people you love to engage in the same holiday activities year after year is comforting and a wonderful reminder that you all belong together. When life is chaotic and busy, it’s nice to know that at least once or twice a year you can count on some things that will always be the same.

2. Embrace change.

I know this sounds a little counterintuitive to the advice I just gave about starting and maintaining family traditions but change and tradition really go hand in hand. Traditions give a secure foundation on which your whole family can find comfort while still being open to the inevitable changes that come with life. Whether you’ve lost a loved one this year, had a new baby, or have sent a “baby” off to college- life is full of transitions. Make the holidays a time to celebrate and honor these changes with love and a sense of togetherness. perfect holiday continued on page 18 16

you want to attend, make a list of the experiences you want to have. Decide what things are most important to you this time of year. Is it celebrating with friends? Maybe the best part of the holidays for you is in the gift giving? Or maybe you long to share quiet meals with extended family? Whatever makes it to the top of your holiday experience wish list is what you should use to drive your decision making for the rest of the season. Instead of spreading yourself too thin trying to do everything; decide to put selfcare first this year. Focus on just doing those few things that matter most to you and doing them with your full energy. You’ll enjoy them more and set a good example for the people around.

4. Capture the memories but don’t forget to live in the moment.

perfect holiday continued from page 16

You can even incorporate these changes into longstanding traditions. If Dad always cuts turkey for Christmas dinner, maybe it’s time to bestow that honor on your son who just got married or graduated from college; allowing your family to continue the tradition by passing it down to the next generation of adults. Change also brings the opportunity for new traditions. Finding a way to remember a family member who has passed away can be difficult for many people during the holiday season. Creating a special tradition allows everyone to remember the person they loved and also strengthen the bond between those of you who remain. It will be an emotional decision but with some careful thought and honest communication you can come together as a family and create a new special legacy that will continue year after year.

3. Practice self-care.

Everyone needs self-care but I want all the moms out there to pay special attention to this step! Self-care is the greatest gift you can give your family this holiday season. Why you ask? The only way to give them your best is to take care of yourself first. Much like the oxygen mask rule on airplanes; you can’t really help others if you’re drained, tired, and overwhelmed. Unfortunately for many of us that’s exactly what happens at this time of year. Our desire to give our family and friends the best can easily turn into a neverending to-do list and unrealistic schedules. The path to a ‘perfect holiday’ is learning how to say no when necessary and prioritize. One helpful way to do this is by starting the season with a different kind of wish list. Before you list out the gifts you need to buy and the parties

One of my favorite parts of having extended family around is taking great photos and videos. And with today’s smartphones, everyone can play photographer anytime they want. Capturing these special moments on film is important but it’s also crucial to learn how to stay in the moment and enjoy creating the memories. Social media has given us a double-edged sword. It allows family members and friends who are far away to feel engaged even when they can’t be present which can be an amazing gift. On the flipside, it can allow people to be in the same room with each other and still not connect. This holiday season, consider setting aside time to be completely unplugged- no phones, no computer, no iPads! Instead of tweeting and sharing photos with the world, focus on sharing yourself with the people you love. It’s a perfect time to tell stories, reminisce about holidays past, and just have fun being together.

5. Stop chasing perfection.

I know we’ve been talking about creating the ‘perfect holiday’ season but the real secret is that perfection is just an illusion. The ‘perfect holiday’ is the one where you are living in the moment, connecting with friends and family in a meaningful way, and fully aware of all that you have to be grateful for. That can be as simple as sharing hot cocoa after shoveling out the driveway or laughing together over takeout after the dog has eaten your ‘perfect’ turkey. If you take a moment right now to reflect on some of your favorite ‘perfect holiday’ memories what comes to mind? I’m willing to bet that it has little to do with having the right decorations, cooking the perfect meal, or taking a J.Crew-catalog worthy family photo. I’m willing to bet that it was about feeling loved and connected with someone special because in the end that’s the real trick to a ‘perfect holiday.’

A Gift of Gratitude We live in a world where marketing hits us on all levels. Open a magazine, visit Facebook, internet and TV advertisements. And for each of our companies, marketing is vastly important. With so many ways to market yourself and your company and yet finite dollars you can use for your marketing, you have to choose how you set your best foot forward. So why choose spend your dollars on a Holiday Event? Well, as already mentioned, there are so many ways to market your brand but few make as personal a connection as speaking directly to your clients. Much of your marketing strategy can feel impersonal but cultivating relationships is still a tried and true way to build a clientele. You gain credibility as a business because clients know the person behind the business. If your clients know YOU, your business and your values, chances are much greater that you will build a loyal following. Two main ingredients of a successful business are building loyal customers and then retaining loyal customers. Hosting an event gives you just that opportunity to shake hands and have a one to one chat. The Holidays are a prime time to thank your faithful clients for giving you their business, and a great time to engage potential clients. The holiday season is like a soft-sell. Everyone is a little nicer with some hot chocolate in hand and a cookie. When you are planning your event think outside the box. While yes the holiday season is the kinder, gentler time of the year, you are competing with plenty of other personal and business holiday parties. Originality is a plus. You don’t want to get lost in the holiday shuffle. As members of the Haymarket and Gainesville communities, we have so many great venues right here. People like the idea of supporting local businesses. If you are having a cocktail party, see if a winery would showcase their wines. Do a food pairing. Think about your clientele. If you have a business geared towards women, have a spa-themed event and ask a local spa to offer some services. Instead of a traditional sit-down dinner, think about food stations that encourage mingling. If your business focuses on families, you make sure that any event you host is family-friendly and entertaining for the kiddos. Think about a game station to occupy the children or offer onsite certified childcare. Photo booths are a big draw. They make guests feel a little more at ease and give a great ice breaker. It is imperative that you think about the clients you want for your business and then think about what will engage them. Since this is a marketing opportunity, you want to be as impactful as possible. When you think about your holiday plans take these few things into account: • • •

This is a sales opportunity, but no one wants to hear a sales pitch. Let people know you and then they will get to know the business. Event-marketing is a targeted event, both in audience and purpose. Activities are a huge plus. Provide an engaging activity to get conversation flowing. People get awfully tired of small talk. MEET OUR MEMBER JIM BRYANT Manassas Cab Company

Manassas Cab Company has served the needs of our community residents since 1995 getting its start with five taxi cabs, since then owner Jim Bryant has worked to grow his business to include sixty owner-operated cabs that continue to service our community. They provide around-the-clock service to the Haymarket and Gainesville area and are easily reachable by calling their dispatcher, dowloading the TaxiMagic app on your smartphone or reaching out to your favorite driver on their personal phone. Jim joined the HGBA in April of this year after attending several breakfast meetings and seeing the value. He said that spending time with members and recognizing how his business could help other businesses in the community as well as how other businesses in the community could help Manassas Cab Company has been truly beneficial. He offers his three favorite tips to help business owners and professionals: • One weird, old trick is to keep doing it until you get it right; persistence counts in business. • If you make a mistake and you keep going, learn from it, get over it and keep going. • Look at your books daily, predict cash flow and never underestimate your competition.

History

La Grange:

still making history By John T. Toler

Part 1: Benoni Harrison’s plantation flourished until the Civil War

La Grange, as it appears today. The one-and-a-half story section on the left was once a detached kitchen, later joined to the larger main house by the double-arches. The house was left vacant and badly vandalized in the 1930s.

The main house at La Grange, on Antioch Road west of Haymarket, is one of the few 18th century homes in the area that still stands basically intact. But its survival was never certain. Left vacant and abandoned in the 1930s, the main house was badly vandalized. After a lawsuit regarding ownership of the property was partially resolved in 1938, La Grange was purchased by Joseph and Irma Gibbons, who during the early 1940s restored the house. But this was just a reprieve. By the early 1970s, Mr. and Mrs. Gibbons had passed away, and La Grange was again unoccupied, and fell into disrepair. With the opening of I-66 only a few miles away, the property was ripe for development. After another period in limbo, wellknown vintner Chris Pearmund acquired the La Grange property –now just 20 acres and the house – in 2006. It has since become one of Prince William County’s premier wineries. 22

Like most of the land surrounding Haymarket, the original property adjoined the upper end of Robert “King” Carter’s huge Bull Run tracts. Lord Fairfax first granted the 300-acre parcel that would later become La Grange to William Watkins in 1741. Watkins sold the land to William Hogan in 1788. George Green was the next owner, and it was he who built the original main house in 1790. According to the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission survey done by W. Brown Morton III in 1959, the house “… commands a prominent position on the side of a slope in the foothills of the Bull Run Mountains, which rise behind the house on the northwest.” The main house itself is described as “…a two-story, gable roofed structure with a four bay front, central hall plan, and a one-and-a-half story kitchen wing on the west side.” Interestingly, the brick walls on the front of the house are laid-up in Flemish bond, and the side and rear walls in five-course American bond.

Green added other interesting architectural features, including moldedbrick cornices and jack-arches over the windows. There are three gable-roofed dormers on the front and rear facades of the main structure, and two on each side of the kitchen wing.

Remembering ‘Betty Jane’ Jordan White Benoni and Catherine Harrison had no children of their own, but La Grange was always open to members of the family, especially the children and grandchildren of Benoni’s twin sister, Mary H. Jordan, and her husband, James Jordan.

Also notable are the two original brick chimneys with tiled weatherings and corbelled caps on the main structure, and a third chimney on the west side that was added later. The prominent rear porch on the house replaced a smaller original porch.

The stories written about Benoni Harrison’s extended family reveal much about life in Western Prince William County in the mid- to late 19th century.

Some of the land was sold off during Green’s ownership, and the remaining 277-acre property sold at a tax auction on Aug. 31, 1827. Winning bidder was Benoni Evans Harrison (1786-1869) of Alexandria, who paid a mere $751 for La Grange. According to the VHLC survey, Benoni Harrison was a descendant of Burr Harrison (1637-1706), who at one time served as a Stafford County justice. Family records reveal that Benoni Harrison had a twin sister, Mary (1786-1861), and a brother, John S. Harrison, who lived near Occoquan. In his youth, Benoni (Hebrew for “son of sorrow”) worked in Dumfries, selling goods to the crews of the ships that called at the old seaport. He later became a successful businessman in Alexandria, and it is known that he was a member of the Dumfries Masonic Lodge No. 50 from 1810-1812. At that time, he was listed as holding a Doctor of Laws degree. On Dec. 31, 1820, Harrison married Catherine Norvill (1804-1865), the daughter of Capt. Peyton Norvill (17791849), who was his business agent in Fredericksburg. Harrison was a guest at a dinner in Alexandria honoring Gen. Lafayette during his historic visit to the U.S. in February 1825. Inspired by Lafayette, Harrison later named his property in Prince William County “La Grange,” French for “The Granary,” and also the name of Lafayette’s birthplace. In the past, some have thought that because the kitchen wing had upstairs bedrooms, it was the original 1790 house, and that Harrison built the two-story main house, perhaps as late as 1830. However, no records exist that support this theory. la grange continued on page 26 24

ELIZABETH ‘BETTY JANE’ JORDAN WHITE 1847-1929

James and Mary H. Jordan’s son, Benoni Harrison Jordan, was married to Jane Welch. He owned a mill at Upperville, and also helped manage the La Grange plantation for his uncle. Benoni and Jane Jordan’s second child, Elizabeth “Betty Jane” Jordan was born at La Grange on Oct. 12, 1847.

“Betty Jane grew up in a well-off family and was educated at home by tutors,” according to family historian, the late Mary Drowne Gale. “She and her older sister Mary Lydia, older by two years, were given piano lessons, and a slave girl drove them to Warrenton each week for the lessons. It took a good part of the day for the round trip. “They learned to sew neatly, embroider, had singing lessons, and maybe they learned to cook a little; there were slaves to do the cooking,” recalled Mrs. Gale. “Her father had a big flour and grain mill at Upperville, and Betty Jane spent some time in that town. All was fine until the Civil War started.” Betty Jane was 14 when the Union army occupied the Haymarket area. The soldiers took whatever they wanted from civilians – including horses, pigs, chickens and sheep, as well as any stored food that they found. Betty Jane, then 16, was in Upperville when Union soldiers came into town and started to set the Jordan’s mill on fire. In an attempt to stop them, she dashed inside and told them that if they burned the mill, she would burn up with it. They had to pull her out bodily, and the mill was destroyed. During times that the Union troops were gone, Confederate soldiers returned to the area. Mosby’s Rangers rode by one day, and one of the men caught Betty Jane’s eye. She later learned that the handsome cavalryman was Hugh Watkins White (1839-1912), of Upperville. remembering continued on page 26

It is known that when he acquired La Grange, Harrison was living in Alexandria with Catherine and his nephew Benoni Jordan (1820-1894). Records also show that he must have moved to La Grange permanently by 1830, when he was appointed a Prince William County Justice of the Peace. In addition, research has found that Harrison’s Alexandria property was offered for sale in an advertisement published in the Alexandria Gazette in 1831. Benoni Harrison & La Grange Unfortunately, the only known portraits of Benoni Harrison have been lost, and much of the historical writings about him have centered on his small stature and his tempestuous relationship with his wife, Catherine. But that historical deficiency is being addressed. Long-time Prince William resident Raymond V. Olszewski is nearing completion of a book about La Grange, and has spent countless hours researching the life and times of Benoni Harrison. An author and historian, Mr. Olszewski’s other books include A Taste of Prince William County, Virginia Wine History, published in 2010. A retired Naval Intelligence analyst and businessman now living in Minnesota, Mr. Olszewski joined Pearmund Cellars as a wine salesman in 2007, working out of the wineries at Broad Run and La Grange. He later became a partner in The Winery at La Grange. “As I poked around the 200-year-old property at La Grange, I became more fascinated with it, and began some serious research into its history, and the people who owned it,” said Mr. Olszewski. “I went deeper into the life of one individual, Benoni Harrison, who lived at La Grange the longest. “Benoni Harrison was a self-made lawyer, a merchant, and a Freemason. He was also Prince William County’s delegate to the Virginia General Assembly from 1848-1851, a Justice of the Peace, a judge and Haymarket postmaster, as well as the county’s Caretaker of the Poor,” according to Mr. Olszewski. “He guided this county in a number of positive ways, and as a result, helped a lot of people. And he asked for nothing in return.”

In this 1907 photograph, Henry Samuel White, the son of Hugh and Betty Jane White, sits in his mother’s buggy in Trapp Branch, which feeds into Broad Run at Thoroughfare Gap. The girl with the camera is not identified. In the background are Stover’s Mill and the miller’s house. Photos courtesy of Mrs. Helen W. Mayhugh, daughter of Henry Samuel White.

“The war was finally over. Hugh White came home to Upperville, and in time, he met Betty Jane,” wrote Mrs. Gale. They were married on March 14, 1869 at Antioch Baptist Church in Waterfall, and made their first home in Upperville, where Hugh worked for his father, Wesley Willis White, a cabinetmaker. In August 1869, Benoni Harrison died, and according to his will, left La Grange to Benoni Jordan, Betty Jane’s father. He would run the farm for the next several years. Hugh and Betty Jane’s first child, Hugh Jordan White, was born in 1870. Soon afterward, Hugh had the opportunity to run a store at Broad Run Station, and they moved to a cottage in Thoroughfare Gap. “Betty Jane’s sister, Mary Lydia Jordan, was married to Henry Newton Brawner (1847-1932), who was the stationmaster and postmaster at Broad Run Station,” wrote Mrs. Gale. “The store did well. It was a very busy place with at least four trains a day, two up and two down, with much freight and cattle shipping.” Henry Newton Brawner also was one of Mosby’s Rangers. Hugh and Betty Jane would eventually have nine children. “Poor Grandma. Six little children in ten years, and the oldest only ten,” wrote Mrs. Gale. Three more children were born, the last being Henry Samuel White, born on Aug. 27, 1888. By that time, Betty Jane was 41 years old, and the oldest son, Hugh, was 18, and had started college. “Hugh was the only one with a higher education,” she wrote. “I don’t know what college he attended… or whether Grandpa paid the tuition, or Hugh worked his way through.” The White family lived in Thoroughfare Gap for several years, eventually moving to a larger house, which is no longer there. They maintained ties with La Grange as long as it remained in the family. Hugh White died in 1912, and was buried in the cemetery at La Grange. However, when Betty Jane died in 1929, ownership of La Grange was still being contested in court. As a result, she was buried in the church cemetery at Little Georgetown, rather than beside her husband at La Grange.

According to the family history, one time while soldiers were searching the house, a Union cavalryman – thinking that a Rebel was hiding in the Harrison’s grand piano – thrust his saber into the instrument, breaking some of the strings. Over the years, other legends were born at La Grange.

The stone springhouse below the main house dates back to 1800. It has been preserved, and is on the tour of the La Grange property offered to guests. la grange continued from page 26

Harrison also had land in Fairfax County, and at one point owned 60 slaves. He invested in the Manassas Gap Railroad in the 1850s, and along with his father-in-law, Peyton Norvill, owned a mill on Catharpin Run at Waterfall. According to Mr. Olszewski, among Harrison’s close friends was Col. Edmund Berkeley, who lived at Evergreen. Every day for years, Harrison recorded weather observations and conditions, long before weather forecasting as we know it today. His handwritten weather records still exist in a leather-bound diary. Harrison had a lot of relatives, but no children of his own. He had a close relationship with his twin sister, Mary Harrison Jordan, who married James Jordan (c. 1776-1835), who ran a mill in Eastern Prince William County. The Jordans had four children: Elizabeth R. (1818-1912), Sarah Ann (died c. 1856), Mary M. (died c. 1869) and Benoni H. Jordan. They lived on a 35-acre property on Quantico Creek purchased from Benoni Harrison’s brother, John S. Harrison. During the Civil War, members of the Jordan family stayed at La Grange,

including Benoni H. and Jane Welch Jordan’s daughters, Elizabeth J. “Betty Jane” (1847-1929) and Mary Lydia Jordan (1845-1902). Times were difficult after the Union army moved into the Haymarket area in early 1862, and began “requisitioning” property from civilians. In one incident recalled in the family history, Union raiders came to La Grange seeking horses, and the family’s slaves hid Betty Jane’s pony in the smokehouse, which had been emptied of hams and other meat during an earlier raid. The soldiers didn’t find the animal. Another account involved Betty Jane and the farm’s ducks. Aware that the Union troops were coming, Betty Jane hid the few ducks they still had under her bed, which had covers that draped to the floor. She lay in her bed, pretending to be sick, and the ducks – sequestered in the dark – did not make a sound. When the soldiers entered her room, they saw only a sick child, and turned and left. Other encounters could have had tragic consequences. Aware that Capt. John S. Mosby and his rangers were in the area, Union soldiers often stopped at La Grange and searched the place.

One concerned an incident when Catherine Harrison, described as a “large, buxom woman,” took issue with a remark Benoni made about her. In front of their guests, she took him over her knee and spanked him like a naughty child. “Outraged, in an assertion of masculinity, he added another chimney to the house, in order that he and his wife need not share a common hearth,” according to Prince William County, the Story of Its Places and Its People (1941). Although unsubstantiated, it has been said that another young woman connected with La Grange during the Civil War discovered a wounded Yankee soldier in a nearby cave, whom she nursed back to health, and later married. During the early development of The Winery at La Grange, a ghostly figure holding a candle was seen in an upstairs window of the main house. Another time, a couple standing outside heard the sound of a piano being played – but there was no one in the locked house, and no piano, either. Benoni Harrison’s will and the family history both mention the piano at La Grange – but by then, it had been gone for many years. According to Mr. Olszewski, only the three legs of the piano have survived, and are in the possession of a descendant living in Manassas – along with Benoni Harrison’s silver spoons, hand-written weather records, and marble-topped dresser. Part 2, to be published in January 2014, deals with the death of Benoni Harrison, the family graveyard, and the subsequent ownerships and changes at La Grange.

SPIRIT

A CHRISTMAS

An internationally known opera singer is again bringing a very personal Christmas production to Haymarket. Each year, the classically trained lyric-coloratura soprano who performs with the Washington National Opera, presents a Christian-themed musical variety show for local audiences. Although the show always celebrates Christmas, its theme changes yearly based on Knight’s inspirations. The theme of this year’s show is “A Christmas Spectacular.” It will be performed at 7 p.m. on Dec. 7 in the auditorium at Battlefield High School, 15000 Graduation Drive in Haymarket. “A Christmas Spectacular” finds Knight falling asleep while thinking about the 2013 show. In true dreamlike fashion, unexpected characters and elements mix together, including the music of the Beach Boys, Johnny Cash and classical composers such as George Frideric Handel and J. S. Bach. Also making an appearance are the “Rockettes” (performers from Prince William Dance Academy), a children’s choir from Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville, characters in Colonial garb, Irish dancers, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus and many more. Despite the unusual variety of characters and musical numbers, it all seems to make sense, just as dreams do at the time. Knight’s vocal performances anchor the show, and she performs along with a variety of instrumentalists and other singers at times. “All your Christmas favorites will be there,” she promises. This will be the eighth year for Knight to orchestrate the show, a benefit concert, through her outreach group, Angela Knight Ministries. Proceeds go to help a variety of local groups, causes and individuals in the community who are in need in various ways. Beneficiaries have included the Childhelp organization out of Culpeper and local food pantries. Funds raised through Knight’s ministry have also provided college aid for local youths, school supplies for needy children, meals for local schools’ football teams and aid to area residents dealing with hardships. Knight notes that the Christmas show seems to get more popular with each passing year. “It’s a great family show,” she said. “People seem to love it.” Last year’s performance drew a sold-out crowd. “It’s best to buy tickets online early,” she said. Tickets are also available at the door if seats are available. Ticket prices for “A Christmas Spectacular” are $15 (adult), $13 (senior citizens) and $10 (children under 10). For more information about Knight and to purchase tickets, visit www. angelaknightmusic.com and go to the “purchase products” tab. 30

ANSWERING THE CALL EVERGREEN VOLUNTEER FIRE & RESCUE Haymarket and Gainesville residents are providing aid to their neighbors in need by volunteering for Evergreen Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. Servicing the Bull Run Mountain, Catharpin and the Evergreen area with two engines, one tanker, one brush truck, two command units, two ambulances, one EMS unit and one utility truck, the volunteers paired with career employees deliver help to those in need in the community. As stated on their website, their mission is to “provide our community with protection of life and property, establishing an environment which promotes education and personal development of our members, in order to assure the prompt and professional delivery of superior fire, rescue, and emergency medical services.” Evergreen has been a significant part of the community when it opened in the 1970s and continues to be an active organization in Haymarket.

“I don’t know that any other volunteer work would equate the similar things that you would experience and feel as a firefighter,” Ayme Pointer, active volunteer member at Evergreen, expressed. Currently lead by full-time volunteer Chief Kerri Logsdon and Assistant Chief Chis Cook, Evergreen operates as the only station with volunteer opportunities in the area. They have about 25 volunteers, fifteen firefighters and ten EMT’s that keep the fire station staffed. As a combined volunteer and career station their vision is to represent the interests of all volunteer and combination fire/rescue/EMS agencies. Evergreen has approximately eighty volunteers including Pointer who has volunteered for three years. When asked how she got involved she said, “I wish I had a noble cause like I survived a fire or someone saved my animal. I think I was attracted to it as a community service as well as the aspect of adrenaline, camaraderie, family and a great opportunity to learn.” Of the eighty volunteers, they are divided into four memberships: active, support/ associate, life and honorary. Active members participate in firefighting and/or EMS

and maintain a regular shift. Support/associate members are those individuals who provide services to the department in an administrative or other capacity and participate frequently in events throughout the year. Evergreen’s support/associate members work on fundraisers and participate and create events for the community like Truck or Treat, Breakfast with Santa and an egg hunt near Easter. Life members are recommended and approved by the Board of Directors after fifteen consecutive years of active/associate member services. Finally, an honorary membership is available but must be given by the Board of Directors. “We need active members,” Pointer mentioned, “People who can come in and staff.” Evergreen is looking to double their active membership in order to adequately staff throughout the week. With a longer volunteer roster the station can staff more or all of their available equipment. “Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are great, whereas Mondays are usually hard,” Pointer said. Fridays are popular for junior members who predominantly come from Battlefield High School. Receiving the same education and training, junior members are those who fall between the ages of sixteen and eighteen. The only limitation for junior members is on a school night, they must leave the station by 10pm.

“It’s great for leadership development,” Pointer remarked. Chief Logsdon is known for checking in on junior members grades and attendance to make sure they are keeping up with their responsibilities. If there happens to be a need for tutoring one of their members will gladly come in and help. “It’s nice because some go away to college and come back and run during holiday break or the summers,” Pointer recalls. Some have even come back to the station since graduation to give back to the community. It might be Evergreens job to protect the community but they also work to build a sense of community as well as awareness. Coming up this month the Evergreen will host a Pancake Breakfast with Santa on December 14 from 8:30am to 11:00am. It’s an all you-can-eat pancake event with face painting and a visit from Santa for the children or those young at heart. They are active in the Spend the Day in Haymarket events like Haymarket Day by taking part in the parade. They also do Truck or Treat near Halloween and an Egg Hunt near Easter. If you’ve attended any Battlefield High School sporting events you might have seen them there showing their support.

At the station they have a social hall that they lend and rent to other community organizations. Assistant Chief Cook also provides tours to the public of the station including rides on the fire trucks, equipment information, a chance to try on firefighting gear and fire prevention education. “Firefighting is a calculated risk but we are so prepared through training and education,” Pointer described. She continued to say that it is a brave and respected job but that having a strong relationship and trust with a station family helps keep you from harm. “We’ve been part of this community, a landmark, and Evergreen is a place that deserves honor in this community,” Pointer said.

Evergreen Volunteer Fire and Rescue is located at 3510 James Madison Highway in Haymarket next to the Bull Run Golf Club. They are currently accepting volunteers for positions available with fire and rescue. Donations are always appreciated to help update and maintain equipment and uniforms for the volunteers. Currently their funds are going to accomplish these goals: starting a bicycle emergency response team, providing new firefighting gear, replacing their 1997 ambulance, helping maintain the station, offering specialized training to their members and many more. There is an additional wish-list on their website with specific items. Middle East Flavor KABUL KABOB HOUSE

Unforgettable tastes of the Middle East are waiting you just down the street. Kabul Kabob House, located both in Haymarket and Gainesville, provides our community with the authentic taste of Afghanistan. Muhammad Abassi, with the help of his son Kamail and brother, have created a restaurant environment that offers fast, yet healthy an ethnic dishes. Fast doesn’t always mean fried, the kabob house works with fresh meats and vegetables and cooks (over a grill) to order. “It takes a couple of minutes to cook the food because everything is fresh,” Kamil explained. “Nothing here is microwaved or precooked.” Get started with one of their shareable plates like the Sombosay made with fresh potatoes prepared with onions, cilantro, fresh herbs and spices. The Aushak is savory with Afghan ravioli filled with leeks and served on a yogurt-mint and topped with a ground beef sauce (a vegetarian version is also available). They have vibrant salads like the Salata that features diced cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and herbs tossed in lemon juice. The Maust-OKhiar is refreshing with homemade yogurt, diced cucumbers and mint. Kabul Kabob House is known for their tasty kabobs. They offer twelve varieties that are paired with freshly made nan (baked bread) and if you’d like a bright vegetable skewer. The Boneless Chicken Breast Kabob is a customer favorite, marinated in special herbs and spices and broiled over a charcoal grill. The Peswari Chaplee Kabob is made using ground lamb mixed with chopped onions, green peppers, egg yolk and a dried hot pepper with seasonings. The Deluxe Kabob is an excellent option for those who want to enjoy the taste of chicken, shami (season ground beef) and lamb – all are marinated and cooked over charcoal.

Their sandwiches are stacked high and are ideal for lunch or dinner. The Gyro Sandwich is quite popular accented with lettuce tomato and onions. The Lamb Kabob Sandwich or the Chicken Kabob Sandwich are both created with kabob-marinated meats, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and drizzled in a special Afghan sauce. The entrees here are plentiful and delicious. The Qaubili Palau boasts tender pieces of lamb under a large portion of season rice, fried sweet carrots and raisins and served with qurma (a meat sauce). Mantu is also a great choice; it includes homemade pastry shells filled with onions and beef. The pastry shells are served on a yogurt and topped with carrots, yellow split peas and a beef sauce. Not into meat? Kabul Kabob also offers a vegetarian menu and has plenty of vegetarian substitutions. Mixing mushrooms, green peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and garlic,

fried with onions and tomatoes and their special seasonings, makes their Vegetarian Curry. The Vegetarian Rice Dish is flavorful with a combination of kadu (sautéed pumpkin), subzi (fried spinach) and bouranee baunjan (fried eggplant), all served with qaubili palau (seasoned rice.) Kabul Kabob House is located at 6426 Trading Square in the Shopping Center with Wal-Mart and next to Penn Station East Coast Subs. They are open seven days a week Sunday through Monday 11:00am to 9:30pm and Friday through Saturday 11:00am to 10:00pm. They offer carryout and online ordering as well as catering. The Haymarket location is the sister store to Kabul Kabob House located in the Somerset Crossing Shopping Center in Gainesville.
