Art Glass and Craft Beer in Haymarket

Best selling author Jim Kouze says, “The best way to lead people into the future is to connect with them deeply in the present.” That’s exactly what happened when Omar and Shelly Awad, owners of the Haymarket Evergreen Center, had a conversation with Chryssi Elfstrom and Steven Kihl, local artists who came into Evergreen almost daily as their go-to spot for lunch. This connection led Chryssi and Steven to invite Omar and Shelly to their glass blowing studio out of their home nearby. Seeing the passion of these artists, Omar and Shelly offered the space next to the deli for a studio and thus, Crafted - the Glass Studio, Beer and Wine Shop - was born. Crafted’s location was originally a garden shop with a porch on the back. Steven and his father used locally sourced wood to build the porch into a workshop and renovate the store. With an eye for things antique and reinvented, Chryssi and Steven put thought into every aspect of the store. The shelving was made using Virginia poplar wood, from one of the state’s tallest trees. The display cabinet was originally from a 1908 coffee mill. A cash register from 1910 adorns the front desk. The result is rustic and cozy, making the store feel like visitors are personally welcomed into it. Steven and Chryssi believe that art builds community, enhances knowledge, and develops inspiration. The original concept for the store spawned from Steven’s invention of a blown-glass wine aerator for which he has applied for a patent. Offering wine in the store was a perfect fit, especially in an area that is rich with local wineries. Craft beer selections were the next step, as it is something of a hobby for Chryssi and Steven to enjoy learning about in their free time. Crafted became a unique Most of Crafted’s beer selections come from U.S. craft breweries. 6

blend of wine, craft beers and glass blowing art that is a rare find in a little known area of Haymarket. A glass blowing demonstration is something that may change the way people think about the art and the pieces displayed in the store. Steven says that patience and confidence are required for this type of art. When the glass is at molten state, it can be up to 2,800º Fahrenheit. It may even take up to 6 months for an artisan to gain the strength and stamina to rotate the glass evenly and shape the glass into form. Steven says, “When beginning a new piece of glass, I usually have a concept together from brainstorming, research, and brief sketching. Glassblowing requires attention to three major components: gravity, timing, and feeling. The more aware you are and understand how these elements affect the glass, the better your glass will be.”

“The artwork begins life in the shop as glass rods and tubing,” he says, “that is then split and pulled apart to create ‘points’ which make it easier to work with and manipulate.” It’s crucial to use different flame settings at different stages of forming the glass. When the end of the point is closed off, the artist begins to puff into the glass to create a bulb that is shaped into an ornament or other glass form depending on where the heat is placed and how the glass is stretched. Colored rods blend to create unique patterns and designs into the product. In the final stage, the glass form is sent through the kiln which “allows thermal stresses in the glass to relax and create a durable product.” In addition to glass blowing, Steven also does lampwork in house, which is a type of art that uses steel blowpipes to form the glass. The glass used in this process is softer and

has a different melting rate than the borosilicate. A large vat of molten glass is used to reheat the art as it is created; wooden blocks, metal tools, and even wet newspaper are used to shape the glass. Then it is also put through the kiln to form the finished piece. The result is a beautiful, eclectic array of glass pieces that are available for purchase in the shop. Eye-catching ornaments hang in the windows, colorfully playing with the light streaming in. Vases, glass bowls, wine glasses, and many other pieces make elegant gift selections which are locally created with passion and talent. For those looking to try a new beer selection, Crafted is the place to go. The offerings are extensive and different than anywhere else. Visitors can peruse the refrigerated display to create their own unique six-pack of choices that include hard-to-find

Every month, Crafted hosts beer and wine tasting event that includes glass blowing demonstrations, raffles, and great food and drinks from local wineries and breweries. by Charlotte Wagner, Duskland Dogs

ooking for some pawsome gift ideas for your pooches this holiday season? Take a look at what the Duskland gang are putting on their wish lists. When making a purchase for your pampered pooch consider your dog’s activity level, play style, and temperament.

Dear Santa Paws, I am so excited to learn all about my very first Christmas! In order to further my training I would like to ask for: the Tricks and Training Workbook by Kyra Sundance, some high rated Tuffie plush toys, a larger Gentle Leader Easy Walk harness, and one of those really cool Halti dog training leads for when we walk at the Green Way. I’ll make sure to leave some biscuits and gravy out for you! Love, Luna.

Dear Santa Paws, We are very proud of our vermin control efforts around the house this year. In appreciation of our work we request some activity items. We specially like the Kong squeaker balls, Skineezz stuff-less toys, and a couple of Kong Wubbas. We would also like for you to consider some agility equipment like a pop-up tunnel, jumps, hoops, or weave poles. We’ll be at the door waiting for you! Piper and Asher.

Dear Santa Paws, I have been very busy guarding off bears and keeping the livestock safe this year. My mom said I can request some items for the holidays because I’ve done good. Grooming is one of our favorite past times, so maybe I could get a slicker brush, wide toothed comb, and nail dremel to stay nice and pretty. Grain free cookies are good too! Your big fan, Odin.

Dear Santa Paws, I know I can get myself into trouble, but I really am a good girl. I am a working dog and need to be kept busy to stay sane! Please help me bust boredom by sending some mental stimulation toys. Mom says ditching the food bowl and feeding my meals in toys will give me a job AND keep me entertained. My all time favorite is a frozen stuffed Kong, but I also like kibble dispensing toys such as the Buster Cube or JW Treat Ball. Puzzles like the Nina Ottosson or Kyjen toys are cool too. Thanks! Ginny.

Dear Santa Paws, I know I am an old boy, but I still enjoy many things in life, especially curling up with a chew and rawhide on my custom Orvis bean bag bed. Mom says I have been a “good dog” all year and get to pick out some of my favorite American-made snacks! I especially love bully sticks, cow ears, pigs ears, and antlers. Thanks for the treat! Riley.

Reduce Holiday Stress with

YOGA MEDITATION by Nick Spyros

The Holiday season can be joyous and exciting. However, in this joyous celebration, stress levels rise to some of the highest levels of the year. Nearing the end of the year, the pressure of daily life increases. While preparing for the holidays, we get calls from our boss to meet or exceed yearend expectations, wrap-up year-end results, and prepare plans for the next year while attending to our normal work loads. We are also working with the kids to get them ready for their exams. Even normal daily routines become stressful. With figuring out 18

what to do for dinner or checking to see if the kids finished their homework, all while putting the final touches on our holiday planning, it’s no wonder we feel pulled in a million different directions and stressed to the very limit of our being! We can make this period more manageable if we take some time to practice yoga. Recent studies show that practicing yoga at least twice a week reduces stress, improves sleep, lowers blood pressure, and improves heart function. A reputable yoga practice combines strength, flexibility,

and cardiovascular training with controlled breath and relaxation. Many people avoid practicing yoga because they are not flexible. We have all heard or said, “I can barely touch my toes”. The first step is to get past the myth that you need to be flexible to practice yoga. It is simply not true. Every yoga practitioner started with a first day. In fact, people who are not flexible will generally see faster results. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) studied the physical benefits of yoga and concluded that the regular practice of yoga Haymarket Lifestyle

SIMPLE YOGA STRESS-REDUCTION Ujjayi breath, breathing in and out through your nose, is a calming breath used during yoga practice. To relieve the stress associated with this Holiday Season and in general, practice the following technique: Come to a comfortable seated position sitting up straight with a long spine. Place your hands on your lap. Close your eyes. Breathe in through your nose for three seconds and exhale through your nose for three seconds keeping you mouth closed the whole time. Start off with a short duration, say about three minutes, and eventually work your way up to 15 minutes per session. Progress at your pace and grant yourself grace to take the time for this exercise. Your mind will wander as thoughts turn-up regarding issues that are foremost on your mind. Just acknowledge these thoughts and then let them go, returning your focus to your breath. Anytime you feel stress or panic creeping in while stuck in traffic or waiting in line, just take one or two Ujjayi breaths with your eyes open and let the stress melt away. When you get to an appropriate location, engage in the steps above. Research shows sitting quietly and breathing reduces your heart rate, lowers your blood pressure, calms your mind and body, and reduces stress. Enjoy moments of peace and celebrate this joyous Holiday Season. significantly improves flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, and balance. Some styles of yoga, such as Power Vinyasa yoga will improve muscle tone more rapidly than less dynamic and physical styles. A heated room increases the aerobic benefits of a more physical yoga practice. Additionally, the focus on breathing helps you relax by reducing stress and anxiety. During the pressures of the Holiday Season, we make excuses that we have less time for ourselves and, therefore, cannot exercise. We must change this mindset and give ourselves permission to make our health a priority. We all have enough time during the week to attend at least three yoga classes. The real question is, “How important is it to you to reduce your stress, get in better shape, 20

and enjoy the holidays even more with your friends and family?” We make time for the things we value. Through yoga, you get to know your body, which allows you to effectively deal with stress by raising your awareness of stress triggers and dealing with them in a healthy way before things seem overwhelming. There are many styles of yoga, and many yoga techniques can be used on a moment’s notice to mitigate stress. You should pick the style and community where you feel the most comfortable in order to learn these techniques. These various styles range from extremely gentle

to quite challenging. Power Vinyasa yoga is one of the more athletic forms of yoga. A proper Power Vinyasa practice improves your foundation and is effective in building both strength and flexibility. The combination of a strong foundation with improved strength and flexibility allows for those “WOW” breakthrough moments when we are able to smoothly transition from one pose to the next in a powerful flow. In any yoga practice, it is important to have qualified instructors. If you are anywhere from a beginner to an advanced practitioner, it is important to join a practice where the

instructors will guide you to modify poses and engage in the practice to your ability. It is your yoga practice and your yoga community facilitated by leadership of the instructor. The discipline of a continued yoga practice leads to the favorable results of stress reduction, improved flexibility and increased strength. Adding heat to the practice improves aerobic conditioning and allows for deeper stretches6. In considering a hot yoga studio, it is important that the room has the proper heating systems in place to warm the room within a consistently specified range. A 45%-50% humidity range is considered ideal. There should also be ample air circulation in the room to avoid hot spots in the room that could contribute to heat exhaustion. Finally, an air purification system offers an added benefit of maintaining healthy air quality. As your body adapts to the environment, you can expect to see results in improved flexibility and conditioning. Still, it is important to consider that hot yoga may not be for everyone. Consult with a physician before beginning to ensure that no extenuating health considerations could prevent you from practicing Vinyasa yoga. For example, it is advised that you wait until after your pregnancy before you begin a hot yoga practice if you are pregnant and have not practiced hot yoga before. Practicing yoga reduces stress and overall fitness-- not just during the holidays. Give yourself some grace and make the time to engage in a yoga practice at least three times a week. In looking for a studio, the space should be clean, quiet and uncluttered, and staffed with trained and experienced instructors. Added benefits include cool towels to use during Savasana (rest pose) and showers make your yoga practice convenient for a busy schedule. You should always feel welcomed when you walk into the studio. You should want to be part of that community. My wish is for you and your family is to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing holiday season.

From your Transform Power Yoga Team (Susie Pfefferkorn, Liba Spyros, Sarah, Spyros, Kerry Waters, Samantha Mang, and Nick Spyros). We hope you have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful Holiday Season. Our credentials are available upon request. 22

Take another look at your by Steve Oviatt

Bottom Line

Are you using teleconferences to save on travel and fuel costs? Are you also relying on more online communication, like emails, faxes and social media? As you look at your balance sheet, you will normally see expenses that are fixed and those that are not. Among the fixed expenses are telecom bills. These deserve another look as you review your budget at the end of the year. Too many CEO’s, CIO’s and CFO’s treat telecom as a “fixed” expense when it is not. For example, organizational changes, like new hires, departures, reorganizations or new products can result in the need for reworking your phone system. These moves, adds and changes are ongoing maintenance costs, not fixed costs. As for fixed costs, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce those monthly expenses. When you look at the bottom line, look for these signs: • Has your organization downsized and closed any sites over the past couple years with NO change in the monthly telecom bills? • Are your telecom costs increasing as you rely more and more on the phone and email for communicating with your customers, clients and vendors to save on fuel and travel costs? • Has your organization been operating under the same contract with the same carrier for more than two years with NO change in 24

the monthly telecom bills? Are you keeping track of all the cellular phones you’re paying for? Do your people exceed their plans on a regular basis, thereby incurring more charges? Do you know who has a cell phone? Does everyone who has a cell phone still work for you? Are new “fees” and “taxes” being tacked onto your phone bill?

Telecom has evolved into a commodity instead of a service, especially with the entry of cable providers, like Comcast and Time Warner, competing with the traditional carriers. For their part, the traditional carriers have responded by providing internet and video through FIOS and DirecTV. If you run a small business, take a serious look at these bundles, even if you don’t want or need all the features. Such bundled packages normally come with a flat rate and can result in considerable savings.

If a bundled package does not meet your needs, don’t be afraid to negotiate with the various carriers. If you’re happy with your current telecom contract, think of having an audit to double check your bills. Telecom expense professionals will normally review your bills for free. Ever evolving rules and regulations can and do lead to billing errors, which the carriers interpret to their benefit, not yours. These errors, if not caught, are costing you money and when challenged, customers win nearly 90% of the time! Increasing carrier capacity and new technology means competition for your business and can lower your costs. Take advantage and improve your bottom line! MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Business Name: CASA-CIS: Court Appointed Special Advocates, Children’s Intervention Services HGBA Member Name(s): Jennifer Perkins HGBA Member since: CASA--since 2009 Address: 9384 C Forestwood Lane Manassas, VA 20110 Phone: 703-330-8145 Email: jperkins@casacis.org Web: www.casacis.org Jennifer Perkins, Outreach Director for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) in Prince William County has many good things to say about the organization’s important work with children. “I choose CASA because I believe in helping abused and neglected children in Prince William and surrounding counties. I started as a volunteer advocate, which I still am, but then was hired to do outreach for CASA . When you see the positive impact that CASA has on the lives and futures of these maltreated children you can’t help but want to do everything you can

to keep them safe and help them to have a loving, nurturing family. We also know from several studies that abused children with a CASA have much better outcomes (less drug addiction, less incarceration, better health) than children without a CASA.” CASA trains and supervises volunteer advocates to aid children who have been removed from their home by DSS. A juvenile court judge appoints CASA to the case, giving that CASA a court ordered ability to act on behalf of the child. The mission of CASA is to see that all abused, neglected & abandoned children live in safe permanent homes and receive all necessary assistance to enable them to overcome their trauma. The goal of a CASA is to be the eyes and ears for the court by investigating the best short and long term placement for a child who has been removed from their home. Last year CASA served over 515 children in the area and may exceed that number in the coming year. CASA CIS is not funded through the government and so must raise

the $1500 per year per child it costs to serve them through donations and fundraising events. “Seeing the impact on the children is amazing. Often when you first meet a child they are withdrawn and suffering from any number of physical and developmental issues. Over time, in a healthy home, you see them grow and change and overcome those obstacles one by one.”

Simple ways to bring joy to your holidays By Christine Craddock

hose who revel in the joy of the holiday season, and all the things relating to it, welcome the blizzard of decor in the stores and dance to festive music that is played way too early. For the rest of us, the excitement is lost in the rush to spend money on gifts and the meaning of the holidays is no more than ripped up wrapping paper and dried up Christmas trees. So how can families put a little bit more meaning in the holidays? Rabbi Rose Jacob of the Fauquier County Jewish Congregation, points out that in America, the holidays “have become somewhat inflated, however, with a great deal of community effort, it has taken on even more meaning.” The Jewish congregation celebrates the Festival of Lights with the lighting of the menorah. For the 8 nights of Chanukah (this year from December 16 to 24), celebrants light a candle while reciting a traditional song. The chorus reminds us that “through the darkest of times,” we can “let the lights shine through our hopes and our tears”; it raises our spirits, “connects us as people, no matter where in the world we live.” Rabbi Jacob reiterates the meaning of the holidays, saying that “by coming together in a festive way, with lights, with special foods, games, a special nightly ceremony and prayers that thank God for the Miracles and Strength that God has brought to the Jews throughout history, we reinforce the story of our heritage for our children.” There is meaning in celebrating hope and heritage.

30

Members of the Fauquier County Jewish Congregation celebrate together. Singing traditional songs and lighting candles are part of the celebration of the Festival of Lights.

Brothers Abraham and Samuel Morrison celebrate the eighth night of Chanukah at home in a darkened room illuminated only by the candlelight from the menorah. Simple activities that illustrate the meaning of the holiday are as easy as flipping the light switch.

as we wait for the Lord to come

is what Advent is all about,” says Rev. Sean Rousseau of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Haymarket. Reminding us to live in the present by supporting and hoping together while we wait, he says this is where “we find the meaning of Christian community, Christian life, as well as marriage and friendship.” He reminds us to live in the moment together with our family actively, patiently, and with a sense of purpose. One way families can live with purpose is to give to others both year-round and during the holiday season. The Hinkle family, who recently moved to Haymarket, consists of John, Jocelyn and their two girls. Before their girls even begin making a Christmas list, John and Jocelyn take them on a shopping trip to pick out clothes and toys to give as a gift to a child in need. Although at first the girls had a hard time not wanting every toy for themselves, now they “get excited about picking out the items for the kids.” This venture lead them to want to do more so last year, the Hinkles bought groceries for a family in need “so they can have a Christmas meal together.” They also made a gingerbread house and delivered it to a nursing home. On top of all that, the family made grilled cheese sandwiches and gave them out to the homeless. Jocelyn says “even at such young ages, I think it’s important for our kids to see us serving others, especially during the holiday season.” This sort of intentional selfless giving casts a wider circle of holiday warmth and joy. Ideas and opportunities to serve abound in our area.

December 2014

Giving back has become part of the Hinkle Family’s Christmas traditions. By going downtown to give food to homeless people, and shopping for families in need, they deepen the meaning of the Season of Giving beyond material trappings.

31

While it may seem difficult at times to coordinate, family time during the holidays is important. It doesn’t even have to be complicated with a fancy meal or itchy clothes. A family film fest with comfy pj’s, popcorn and cocoa can become an easy tradition that kids will always remember. Start the viewing out with some shorter features. “Charlie Brown Christmas” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” are great suggestions. After the little ones get sleepy, some classics like “White Christmas,” “A Christmas Carol,” or lighter comedies like “A Christmas Story” or “Elf” are perfect for a cozy winter night in the den.

Supplies for creative Christmas crafts can be found no further than your computer’s clip art folder. It’s fun to watch children and adults create unique decor with simple techniques.

there seems to be increased pressure to have the perfect Christmas decor, but perfection comes in many different forms. Ask any grandmother, and she will probably confess that her favorite Christmas ornament is the one made by her 3-year-old grandchild. Little more than construction paper, macaroni noodles and glitter-glue, it is worth more to her than the finest Waterford crystal. Gathering the family together to craft handmade decorations (even out of simple, inexpensive items) is a way for children to participate in the festivities while marking time and milestones in their all-too short childhoods. Ideas for easy family projects made from simple materials are available from a variety of sources. Our suggestion: find simple clip art of a dove, and print it out on card stock. Kids and adults will enjoy decorating the dove with their own artistic touches: glitter, sequins, and watercolor paint. When their masterpieces are finished, cut out the shapes and mount them on a second layer of decorative paper using a glue stick. Punch a small hole through both layers through which you can thread a piece of yarn or ribbon for hanging from the tree. Esther Boykin, LMFT, marriage and family therapist and CEO of Group Therapy Associates in Haymarket, points out that “despite our best intentions to focus on family and love, the holiday season is often one of the busiest and most stressful times of year for families. The gift she reminds us to give each other is one of connection. She urges families to create traditions, because this “creates a sense of belonging and happy anticipation for everyone involved.” She says “it only takes a couple of years in a row to turn” something into “a lasting tradition that adds to the joy and meaning of the holiday season.” Perhaps her best point is that “the most perfect moments are the ones when you just let go of expectations and focus on just having fun.”

Christine Craddock is a writer, editor, photographer, wife, and mother of one adorable 6-year-old boy. She has resided in Haymarket since 2006. 32

Catharpin School Past, Present and Future

Historic structure has served its community well for 116 years

T

he village of Catharpin was established after the Civil War on land that was once part of George Chapman’s Bell Farm. The Chapman family was among the largest landholders in Prince William County in the years before the war, and once owned the historic Chapman-Beverley Mill at Thoroughfare Gap. The site of Catharpin was at the intersection of two welltraveled roads. Sudley Road was the main thoroughfare connecting what became Manassas with the foothills of the Bull Run Mountains; and Pageland Lane, which linked the Warrenton Turnpike (today’s U.S. 29) with Putnam’s Ford on Bull Run, near the Prince William-Loudoun County line. As the Bell Farm property was cut up and sold, businesses were started and families came to the village. By June 1875, Catharpin 34

got its post office. George Sanders Sr., who owned and operated the first store in Catharpin, was the postmaster; his son Frederick succeeded him when he died 12 days after starting the job.

In the early days, the only school in the immediate area was a private school held in the old St. John’s Episcopal Church (abandoned in 1890 and demolished in 1909), about a mile

west of Catharpin. It soon became apparent that a public school was needed, as the closest school in the Gainesville District was at Haymarket, a bit too far away, and difficult to reach when roads became impassable due to snow or mud. The present structure was actually the second public school in Catharpin. The first schoolhouse was built in 1874 on a one-acre lot located on the north side of Sudley Road, east of present-day Sanders Lane. The Buckley family gave the property to the Prince William County School Board. By the mid-1890s, the oneroom structure was too small to accommodate the growing number of students in the area, and in 1897, the school board began planning for a larger schoolhouse to be built nearby. The new building was completed in 1898, and the original school was sold to Catharpin Postmaster Fredrick Sanders for $30. Mr. Sanders placed the structure on rollers, and moved it to a site just north of his store and post office (present-day Alvey’s Store). “The old schoolhouse was used as a chicken coop and later a dwelling,” according to Lucy Walsh Phinney in Yesterday’s Schools. “Finally, it was again moved, and used as a warehouse for Sanders’ grist mill. In 1940, both the mill and the old school building were torn down.” The winning bid for a new, two-story schoolhouse was submitted by E.C. Taylor, who initially offered to build the school for $448.80, but then had to add $40, since he had forgotten to include the roof. A second round of bidding was authorized, but in order to have the schoolhouse 36

finished in time for the 1898-99 school year, the specifications were changed to a one-story structure with frame walls and a gable roof. Again, Taylor won the bid at $335, including the roof. School days at Catharpin The schoolhouse was originally painted yellow, and was served by two privies in the back of the building. Water was brought from the Pattie home across the road from the school, and the building heated by a wood stove. The students were responsible for keeping the school clean. “Katie Bell was the first teacher in that new building,” according to Mrs. Phinney. “Long-time residents remember other teachers: Etta Lynn, Ben Sanders (1865-1930), Mattie Matthews, and Eleanor Wilkins.” Interviewed by Pekay Pettus for an article published in January 1976 in the Piedmont Virginian newspaper, Eleanor Wilkins Brower, of Purcellville, then 88, recalled her experiences at the Catharpin School, where she taught from

1905 until 1917. Only 17 when she began her teaching career, Mrs. Brower was younger than some of her students. “We had children in eight grades in one room. Of course, sometimes the boys would take the long braids of the girls sitting in front and dip them in the inkwells on their desks,” she recalled. “But there wasn’t much badness.” Making do with what they had was always a challenge. Mrs. Brower remembers that when she first came to the school, the children got their water from a wooden bucket, and everyone drank from a single cup. She insisted that everyone bring their own cup, rather than sharing one. Accommodating the number of children of different ages and sizes was also a problem. Mrs. Brower requested adjustable seats for her classrooms, but was told the county couldn’t afford them. She offered to raise money for the new seats if the county would provide matching funds. An oyster dinner was held at the school, and basket dinners were offered for sale, and

By the 1970s, the Catharpin School was vacant and deteriorating. John Norman of Manassas, who was developing the nearby Evergreen Country Club Estates, purchased it from speculators. Haymarket Lifestyle

including Emory and Willoughby Pugh, George Knight, Nallie Beaumont, Meredith and Harry Poland, and Currell Pattie. By the 1929-30 school year, there were two teachers at the Catharpin School: Margaret Pattie Adams taught eight children in grades 1-4, and 12 in grades 5-7. Mrs. Barbara McGrath assisted her. Pay for teachers in those days had increased to $70 per month for a nine-month contract. In order to prepare the old school building for commercial use, Mr. Norman had it moved back from Sudley Road and placed on a new foundation. the needed money was raised. The Catharpin area continued to grow, and by 1913, Mrs. Brower had to move the older students in grades 4-8 to a house “up the road” due to overcrowding. Later that year, the school board approved an addition to be built on the west side of the existing schoolhouse. Contractor for the job was Bryant Nalls, of Greenwich, and I. I. Anderson did carpentry work. Cost of the addition was $1,800. Once construction was finished and the building painted white, Mrs. Brower and her students were able to return to the schoolhouse. While in Baltimore on a buying trip for his store, George Sanders Jr. found a bell that could be used to call the students at the Catharpin School to class. It was purchased with money raised by the Catharpin Community League, and once installed in the school bell tower, it was said that its peal could be heard as far as three miles away. It became a local tradition for the bell to be tolled at noon, when students at the school would break for lunch, as would farm workers 38

within earshot of the school. The building could accommodate students in grades 1-7, and like most community schools, the day started with a Bible reading, followed by morning lessons, recess, and more classes. There was an hour at mid-day for lunch, and the morning routine of lessons, recess and more class work repeated. The school library had about 140 books. During her tenure at the Catharpin School, Mrs. Brower kept a keen and often compassionate eye on her students. When one young girl’s family was in desperate financial straits, she arranged for the child to come to school early each day to clean the place and start the fire in the stove. “I paid her out of my own salary, which was $35 per month,” she recalled. Mrs. Brower left the Catharpin School to teach at the Old Stone House at Manassas in 1917, just as America became involved in World War I. She recalls that several of her students and former students went off to fight in France,

Closed and ‘re-purposed’ As in many communities, the Catharpin School was the center for entertainment and activities, but by 1933, there would be changes in the area, driven by new demographics. By then, only grades 1-5 remained at Catharpin, with students in grades six and seven bused to Haymarket. Only one teacher remained, and classes were held in one room. Enrollment gradually decreased, and the lack of running water and indoor toilet facilities that failed to meet state standards contributed to the school’s eventual closing. At the end of the 1934-35 school year, the Catharpin School was closed, and the students reassigned to the new elementary school at Haymarket. No longer needed, in September 1937 the former schoolhouse and two acres was sold to Luther Lynn for $495. Lynn held onto the property until the early 1960s, when it was sold to Mrs. Jack Alvey, who refurbished the building and opened an antique store there. Later acquired by speculators, the old schoolhouse was unused and neglected, and appeared to be a likely candidate for demolition. Haymarket Lifestyle

CATHARPIN’S BEN SANDERS In her book, Yesterday’s Schools, Lucy Walsh Phinney notes that Ben Sanders was one of the teachers at the Catharpin School during the late 1890s. This was likely Alexander Bennett Sanders, who was born at Catharpin on Feb. 16, 1865, the son of Gus and Roberta Grayson Sanders. People familiar with Catharpin history know that Ben Sanders as a professional baseball player who starred in the early years of the major leagues. After completing his secondary schooling, Ben attended Roanoke College and later Vanderbilt University, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. After a year with a semi-pro team in Altoona, Pa. Ben made his professional debut as a pitcher with the Philadelphia Quakers of the National League on June 6, 1888. Known on the mound as “Big Ben,” he demonstrated good control of the ball, but his delivery was unusual; after releasing the ball, he appeared to be off-balance, and ended up facing the outfield rather than home plate. This put him at a disadvantage if the batter bunted the ball. But even so, during his rookie year, he almost had a perfect game when playing against the Chicago Colts, and ended the year with 19 wins and a 1.90 earned run average. He also led the league in shutouts, with eight. After two seasons with the Quakers, he racked up a record of 38 wins and 28 losses. In 1890, Ben moved to the new Players League, joining the Philadelphia Athletics. That season he had 19 wins and 18 losses. He continued with the Athletics when they joined the American Association for the 1891 season. Ben finished his professional career with the National League’s Louisville Colonels. Going into his last game on Oct. 14, 1892, he had a record of 12 wins and 19 losses. One of the high points of his final season 40

A. B. ‘BEN’ SANDERS 1865-1930 came on Aug. 22, 1892, when he pitched a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles. After retiring from baseball, Ben returned to Prince William County, where he apparently put his educational background to work as a teacher at the Catharpin School. According to research provided by the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center (RELIC) at the Bull Run Regional Library in Manassas, Ben married Mary Mayes, a Mississippi girl, in 1897. The 1900 census reveals that the couple was living in Mississippi with Mary’s parents. Further research into census records shows that in 1910, Ben was living in Miami, Fla., and working as a civil engineer. The 1920 census found him in Jackson County, Mississippi, and still practicing civil engineering. Ben was residing in Memphis, Tennessee, when he died on Aug. 29, 1930. Although he hadn’t lived in Prince William County for many years, he was brought home, and buried in the Sudley United Methodist Church Cemetery near Catharpin.

John Norman of Manassas, who was developing the nearby Evergreen Country Club Estates, purchased the property in the early 1970s. Aware of the growing demand for nursery and landscaping products, Mr. Norman set out to establish a garden center at the old school. But first he had to move the building back on the property, away from Sudley Road. This was accomplished by jacking up the building, placing it on trailers, and hauling it onto a new basement. The old coal shed behind the school was demolished, and the lot cleared. Placed on its new foundation, the old schoolhouse was repaired and painted red, and greenhouses built on the property. The restoration included replacement of the old school bell, which had been taken years before by vandals, but was later recovered and stored for safekeeping at Haymarket. After the renovation was done, Mr. Norman hired Charles Peccora of Aldie to run the new business, which opened in 1976 and was called “The Red School Nursery and Garden Center.” Previously, Mr. Peccora was the chief gardener at Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon’s estate in Fauquier County, and later worked at Hillwood, the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post in Washington, D.C. In addition to plants, seeds and gardening equipment, Peccora offered professional help with landscaping. The business closed in the early 1980s, and the old schoolhouse was briefly used by other nursery business ventures and a consignment store. In 1990, the property was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Neil, owners of White Oak Nursery, which was located on 42

U.S. 29 adjacent to the Manassas Battlefield. The Neils moved their business to the old schoolhouse in Catharpin after being displaced when the Manassas National Battlefield Park was expanded. After more than 23 years in business in the old schoolhouse, the Neils sold the property to the current owners, Jim and Dawn Weber in October 2013. The new business is called Battlefield Garden and Stone Center. While they were new to the nursery business, the Webers brought years of experience in construction and design to their enterprise. A native of Wisconsin, Jim came to Prince William County in 1990, where he sold building materials at the Betco Block Co. in Gainesville. After four years at Betco, he got into construction. Dawn grew up in Warrenton, and the couple lives on Glenkirk Road in the Nokesville area with their three children. Over the past year, the Webers have remodeled the facility, using their imaginations and a lot of repurposed materials. “It was an

interesting building, and we wanted to keep it that way,” remarked Jim Weber. Creative touches abound, with trim made of chestnut siding from an old slave house that Jim found in Front Royal, restroom walls covered in metal roofing, partitions made of pallets, and an interior column made from a tree grown on the property. Is the building haunted? “Some people came in while we were remodeling the building who didn’t know anything about it,” said Jim. “When they went down into the basement, they totally panicked, and had to leave the room.” They hadn’t seen anything, but definitely felt that they weren’t alone. “I’ve never felt anything, even when I’ve been here working late,” said Jim. “But when the man came to polish the floors, he felt something, and took a picture that looked like the outline of a silhouette.” During his years of ownership, Tom Neil remembers others who felt an unearthly presence in the old schoolhouse, and refused

In 1976, after extensive remodeling and the construction of greenhouses and other accessory buildings, the Red School Nursery and Garden Center opened in the Catharpin School. Haymarket Lifestyle

Over the past year, the staff has grown to six employees plus Jim and Dawn Weber, who have been working together “24/7” to bring their business to life. Their goal is not only to grow the business, but also to make it a “weekend destination.” As more residents move into the area, they believe that bringing them to “The Heart of Catharpin” would be good for the village as well.

Numbers Can Help Save Your Life From passwords to clothing sizes to birthdays, you know a lot of numbers by heart. But do you know three key numbers used to identify prediabetes, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity? These are among the chronic diseases that affect half of all adults

in the U.S. and cause seven out of 10 deaths each year. A1C, blood pressure and BMI help determine if you currently have or are at risk for chronic disease – which can often be prevented or reversed if detected early. Through our Remarkable

Haymarket’s evergre A Deli Market from Days Gone By

I

n the lost, sometimes forgotten part of Haymarket - north on Route 15 - sits a small little row of businesses with the Haymarket Evergreen Center at the heart of it. Omar Awad and his wife Shelly drove here from another state to look at it when they heard from a relative that it was for sale. Immediately, they knew this was where they would spend the rest of their lives. The market, with the traditional feel and values, was exactly the kind of place they could see themselves running. They bought the market and the adjacent building, and moved here into a community they say is the best part of living here. Haymarket Evergreen Center makes you feel “like you are going back in time” when you step inside. When Omar and Shelly began running it, they made it a point not to disturb that feeling. Some of the employees have been there for over 20 years, like Isabel Galo who takes pride in making their sandwiches and knowing most customers by name. While humble in design, the Haymarket Evergreen Center makes up for it with their delicious menu offerings. The techniques used to make the sandwiches are old-fashioned and perhaps what makes them the best sandwiches around, according to the reviews by people in the community. Their many five-star reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp prove that the time and

Omar and Shelly Awad fell in love with Haymarket Evergreen Center’s traditional values. 50

effort put into making delicious deli favorites and sweets are well-appreciated by their clientele. It’s a well known fact that this is the place to get the very best breakfast and lunch sandwiches around. The bread is picked up from a bakery daily so it’s always fresh and the meats are hand-sliced in the store. Diners can choose from a variety of sandwiches and subs including the NY Club, turkey, ham, roast beef, and chicken or tuna salad, Italian cold cut, club sub, pastrami or steak and cheese, and meatball. The grilled chicken is one of the most popular sandwiches made with tender, juicy chicken topped with crispy bacon and melted cheese. The steak and cheese is piled high on a toasted bun and topped with lettuce, tomato and jalapenos that perk up the palate. The Godfather has layers of sliced meats, pepperoni, bacon, and cheese with lettuce and tomato on fresh bread. The baked goods are homemade by Shelly and always bring a smile to the customer’s faces, especially the kids. The array includes brownies, cookies, and chocolate bars that are the perfect addition to lunch. The peanut butter brownies are soft and chewy and the popular walnut brownies are usually sold out before the end of the day. Haymarket Evergreen Center is located at 3511 James Madison Highway which is north on Route 15 past Dominion Valley. The deli is open 5 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, 6 am to 5 pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday. The deli can be contacted by calling 703-754-2525.

The grilled chicken sandwich is one of the most popular orders.

Omar Awad says the best part of owning the market is his customers and the community he loves.

Isabel Galo prepares sandwiches for the regular lunch crew.

The Godfather is piled high with handsliced layered meats on fresh bread.

Shelly Awad’s homemade brownies are a hit with customers.
