Gainesville Neighborhood Library Provides By Leigh Giza
Looking for a good book (or two) to read during the cold winter months? Then head over to the Gainesville Neighborhood Library, located at 4603 James Madison Highway in Haymarket on the grounds of the James S. Long Memorial Park. Amid beautiful trees, gently rolling hills and close to horse riding trails, you’ll find a 2,000 square foot brick building that houses a small but varied collection of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs waiting for you to check out, take home and enjoy. The library, which opened in 1987, offers a variety of mediums for kids, teens, and adults to borrow, so it doesn’t end with books. And there’s an ongoing book sale at the library to raise money for the library, with items selling for as little as twenty-five cents. Jan McConnell, Eileen Porterfield, and Dorothy Bowen are all part-time employees at the Gainesville Library.

The library is a small branch, in fact, when it first opened it was called Gainesville Mini Library due to its size. The library is one of six neighborhood libraries in Prince William County’s public library system, and while they are smaller than the community and regional libraries in the county, they do offer a variety of services for their patrons, including helping them to obtain materials from other branches, providing Internet access on two public computers, printing, photocopying and faxing (for a fee), and a 24-hour book drop for patrons to return materials when the library is closed. Many patrons enjoy being able to request materials available at the larger branches and have them transferred to Gainesville; this service allows them access to the entire county library collection without having to drive to another branch to pick up the item(s) they wish to borrow.. Staff member Jan McConnell says that one of the more popular Haymarket Lifestyle

uses of library cards by Gainesville’s patrons lately is to get access to e-books that can be downloaded to portable reading devices like Kindles and Nooks. While the Gainesville branch is too small to have programs like storytimes for children, the staff does conduct tours for scout groups and preschoolers. If you’re willing to travel to Manassas, Bull Run Regional and Central Community libraries have storytimes, book clubs, and other programs for library patrons of all ages. According to Ms. McConnell, the Gainesville library takes pride in providing friendly service to its patrons. Jan is one of three part-time employees and forty-plus volunteers who work at the library. The branch’s manager is Meredith Murphree, who has been managing the building since the library opened in 1987. Jan, who started working for the Prince William County library system in the early 1990’s, says she has gotten to know the patrons who have been coming to the Gainesville branch for a long time. “I really know the ‘old’ patrons. I have followed all the joys in their life, and their problems,” she says. Staff member Dorothy Bowen says she likes her job at the Gainesville library because of the variety of duties she is responsible for, from shelving to helping patrons to occasionally being the janitor for the branch if something needs to be cleaned up during her shift. Gainesville, she told me she enjoys the park environment. “It’s pleasant and relaxing working in a park. There’s no parking lot problems to deal with, and no hustle and bustle,” she said. She remembers the day a patron returned a book to the library’s book drop while riding a horse – not a sight you would see at most libraries, and not something you see every day at Gainesville, but with horse trails nearby, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that a library patron would come to the library on horseback instead of by car. For those of you who have visited the Gainesville library recently, you have probably noticed that the shelves are well-stocked with books and other materials. Ms. McConnell says that there has been an increase in the number of items on the shelf since the library system implemented a floating collection policy in 2012. In a floating collection, when a book is brought back by a patron, it stays at the branch where it was returned rather than being sent by courier back to the branch that “owns” the book. This can be a bit of a challenge for a library like Gainesville with limited shelving space, but it’s good for the library’s patrons because it gives them more things to choose from when they come to visit the library and browse for a book or DVD to borrow. While the Gainesville branch is busy all year, it is especially busy during the summer months, which is when summer reading programs for kids and teens take place. The summer reading program is a library tradition that gives kids prizes for reading during the summer months, when they might not have the motivation from their teachers. During the season, Gainesville library will “hire” additional volunteers, usually teens, to help with registering and tracking reading done by the summer reading program participants. And the regular staff works extra hard at that time to keep up with the high volume of check-outs and returns that typically occurs when kids are on an extended break from school. Volunteers are a very important part of the Gainesville library staff. Most commit to a two-hour shift on the circulation desk each week, helping library patrons to find and check out books, obtain library cards, and get materials from other branches sent to Gainesville. One volunteer, Maria Gibson, has volunteered at the branch for nearly 20 years, and there are others who have also been there for several years. The volunteers at Gainesville enjoy what they do and are very loyal to the branch. Pending county budget approval this spring, construction will begin on a new, larger library for the Haymarket and Gainesville area at the intersection of James Madison Highway (Route 15) and Lightner Road near Mountain View Elementary School. The new library, if built, will be 20,000 square feet and will be a full-service branch, which will allow it to better serve the growing population of the area. The Gainesville Neighborhood Library is open Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed on Sunday. You may reach the library by phone at 703-7925660. For information on Prince William County’s library system, you may visit the web site at pwcgov.org/library.

Fauquier Health Giving Birth in Caring Comfort at the Family Birthing Center cause joint dislocations and tissue fragility. “My ligaments are especially elastic, so everyone had to be gentle when dealing with me. My OB/GYN Dr. (Jeffrey) Bell was already aware of my condition. We also told the nurse upon check in, and she informed the other nurses. They were all very good at being careful and aware of my condition.”
Patrick and Michelle Dowd, along with little Piper and 6-year-old Shelby, were thrilled with their experience at Fauquier Hospital’s Family Birthing Center.
There are many moments that stand out when Michelle and Patrick Dowd remember the birth of their youngest daughter, Piper. One of the most powerful: Michelle was sitting up in bed in the Fauquier Hospital Family Birthing Center, about nine hours into her labor. She said, “My nurse Samantha Buechner and I were forehead to forehead. She was holding me stable — looking into my eyes and talking to me, reassuring me, coaching me — as the anesthesiologist was giving me an epidural injection. Sam was very calm, very encouraging. The anesthesiologist was wonderful, too. He explained everything and gave off a great positive energy. And Sam gave me strength.” 10
“It was like being in a nice hotel.” Patrick added, “It was all the little things that the hospital did that made our experience so exceptional. The nurses were so compassionate and knowledgeable. “The room where Michelle labored and delivered was beautiful, with a comfortable place for me to sleep. While Michelle was in labor, she was able to nap some of the time, so with the hospital’s Wi-Fi Internet, I was able to get some work done and stay in touch with family.
After Piper made her debut, both parents were thrilled with the gentle, respectful care they received in the Family Birthing Center as Michelle recovered. She remembered, “The morning And the food — Michelle is very we were going home, we were exhausted and just wanted to take picky — she loved the food!” Michelle said, “I can see that most a nap. parents after giving birth would They put a do not disturb sign be eager to get home as soon on the door and we were able as possible.” She looked at her to sleep for a couple of hours husband and smiled, “but I think in blissful quiet. We woke up we would have been very happy refreshed and ready to take Piper to stay a while longer.” home.
And the most memorable of all? “When they placed Piper on my chest just moments after she was born.” Michelle said, “When they asked us that morning about our birthing plan and what our preferences were, I said I wanted skin to skin contact with the baby as soon as possible. The nurses, who seemed genuinely delighted when Piper was born, cleaned her up and checked her out quickly, then gave her to me. Everything just stopped as the medical team left us alone to enjoy that special moment.”
Piper Dowd
“It was amazing,” agreed Patrick.

Caring for the Gardener
Your garden won’t be healthy if the gardener is not healthy. Before you go charging back outside use the time to heal yourself if need be and take preventive action for the future. When I started gardening full time I needed new footwear. I bought cute, cheap sneakers at discount stores because I reasoned that they were just going to get dirty and beat up and then I could throw them away. I added a pair of purple crocs because they were lightweight and washed off easily. What I also got after a few months was Plantar Fasciitis. My feet were in constant pain. After some research I found that is common from wearing shoes with little or no support. I also read that Earth Shoes, with the heel lower than the toe, stretches your arch as you walk and can give relief. I got two pairs of Earth Shoes for non gardening times and a really good supportive pair of sneakers for gardening. Solved that problem without expensive orthotics. Gardening, in the spring especially, can be a very wet business. When I am almost done with a job and it starts to rain I am famous for finishing anyway. Even working in wet grass can make feet wet. Prolonged wet feet can lead to Toe Fungus. I know, yuck! And it’s very hard to get rid of. There are several little bottles of stuff on the market. They are pricey and don’t work well. Your doctor will quickly scare you out of the prescription cure. There is a lot involved and none of it is easy. Tea Tree Oil is cheap and truly effective. I put it on after I shower when my nails are softer. I found that adding a nail strengthener helps too. So what have I learned? Good, sturdy, waterproof boots and shoes are worth every penny spent on them. Now my most expensive footwear is not my dressy shoes, it’s my dirty, grubby gardening shoes. If you have some gift money you might want to spend it on a great pair of gardening shoes or boots. Much better to have your gardening problems be deer and weeds than aching feet with discolored toes. Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket eight years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www.TheGardenLady.biz.

CREATING A FITNESS STRATEGY FOR YOUR 2013
Have you given up making New Year Resolutions because you‘ve failed too many times? Tired of losing the same 10 pounds you lose every January? Have you joined a gym and signed a long term contract with the best of intentions and by the end of February, you’re over it! Better yet, you’ll eat nothing but celery and carrots for 2-weeks, realize you can’t keep that up for very long and resign yourself to another year of disappointment. Or……Is this your year?
Your year to feel better! Your year to get back into your skinny jeans! Your year to convince your doctor, you don’t need that cholesterol medication! Your year to get your smile back and your confidence up! Your year to be more active with your kids! Your year to look hotter for your spouse or to find one! Your year to change your life! 12
It’s up to you. I love this quote, “if it’s to be, it’s up to me!” Now you can blame your job, your spouse, your mother, your kids or your schedule, but if you have laser beam focus on something in your life, it will happen! But it doesn’t just happen because you wish it. You have to make it happen! You need a strategy; a plan that you execute that will get you to your goal. You wouldn’t build a house without a plan, and you shouldn’t attack your year without a strategy either. So how do you go about putting your plan together? Long ago, my approach to potential new clients, used to be: sign ‘em up and let’s go! Now we take more of a consultative approach. Ask a few deep questions, do an assessment and create a strategy. If you are planning physical changes in 2013, create a strategy and follow through on it. If you encounter some life changes i.e. career change, relocation, injury, or just plain old boredom, your strategy may change, but you need to start with something! Your strategy will give you the direction that you need. So get a notebook or journal and get started with these tips!

strategy continuedfrom page 12
My tips on creating your strategy: Start with why? If you are unsure “why” you are doing something, you probably won’t keep doing it! Ask yourself these basic questions. Write the answers down on paper. Hang them on your bathroom mirror. • Why do I want this? And what am I willing to sacrifice to do it” Give up my nightly beer or wine? Wake up at 5am and go to the gym? Pack my lunch the night before? Turn down the fries at lunch with co-workers? • Why now? I just turned 50, I want to play more actively with my kids. I want to see my daughter get married? Or my doctor says I’m killing myself! • What will I tell myself when I want to quit? Create a mantra: “Finish!” “One day at a time!” • What do I tell my kids when they want to quit something? Does it apply to me as well? GET A PHYSICAL Before starting a new exercise program, it’s imperative to check-in with your doctor. A complete physical will assure you that you are healthy enough to start a new program. Your doctor can also tell you if you have any restrictions or maybe there are some exercises that you should be avoiding? KEEP IT SIMPLE Don’t take on too much. I’ve had clients that tried to quit everything at once: smoking, drinking alcohol, eating sugary foods, eating carbs, eating bread and even diet coke. Two weeks into it they feel awful and wind up in the doctor’s office emergency room. The human body can’t take all of
that change at once. You’ll start having withdrawals. If you feel like you’re a little out of control and scared of where your health is going; see your physician and start making small changes in lifestyle. Small changes add up to big improvements over the long term. GET MOTIVATED Most people come to me for this one primary reason: NO MOJO!!! You need to find a workout video, a boot camp, a trainer or gym atmosphere that fires you up and keeps you coming back for more! BE ACCOUNTABLE & DISCIPLINED Accountability can come in many shapes and sizes. It can come from outsiders: a trainer, doctor or coach or from a co-worker, a friend or your spouse. Sometimes it comes in the form of a challenge. Maybe you can be the motivator and start your own challenge at home or at work. Most people are undisciplined when it comes to exercise, and proper nutrition. Accountability is key! MAKE IT FUN What type of movement do you enjoy? Please don’t say “none.” Do you like walking, swimming, lifting weights, dancing, yoga, kettle bells, sled pushes, physical challenges? It will be tough at first, nothing great has ever been done without hard work, but find something that you will enjoy. MAKE IT RESULTS ORIENTED It always makes me laugh when people come in and say “I want to lose weight but you ain’t getting me on that scale!” How are we going to know when we get there if we don’t measure? Take the time to take before and after pictures, find a size or 2 smaller jeans that you want to get back into. Set goals! If the program is not working, don’t get defeated and stop! Change it up! Find a new plan.
GOOD NUTRITION IS A MUST For most people, working out is the easy part, it’s the diet that they fail to change. Take it from me, “you can’t out train a bad diet!” Get suggestions from a good nutritionist, trainer or dietician! Read, Read, Read! The internet is full of good nutrition tips. Dive in! It can be both educational and motivational. CAMARADERIE IS FUN If you hate plowing through workouts alone in your basement, find a group of likeminded, supportive people to work out with. Group training is our most popular membership group at Next Level. They encourage one another and they have a blast. CONVENIENCE IS KEY If you have to drive to far for your training, you’ll do it less. Sometimes it’s worth it! But for most people the closer to work or home, the better. INVESTMENT OR EXPENSE Ask yourself that question. How important is it? People spend $400/month on their car payment, but they won’t spend $150/ month on their health. If you’re eating out 4-5 times per week, but can’t afford a gym membership or personal training, maybe you should rethink your budget. You’ll get thinner just from eating at home, plus you’ll have money for the gym! FIND AN EXPERT You wouldn’t want a mechanic doing your taxes? Interview a few trainers; look at different programs and gyms. It takes time, but you’ll know when you’ve found the right answer to make your 2013 successful. It should make you feel good about yourself and your journey. Of course, strategies aren’t successful without follow-through!

CREDIT SCORES: PROTECT YOURSELF Have you ever wondered about how you spend your money and pay your bills affects your ability to obtain credit? In days of tight economic conditions, what's most important in making sure that you're maintaining a good credit standing? People are generally concerned about their credit scores when they apply for loans, leases, qualify for mortgages, and other ways of buying and paying for items over time.

So how is credit history created? What is a credit score, and how is it developed? The amount of credit you have; how well you have managed it by making payments when they're due; how long you've had credit; what kind of credit; and what percentage of debt outstanding compared to credit extended all factor into determining your credit score. A high score on the spectrum of 300-850 is desirable. Credit card companies, mortgage companies, and other creditors regularly report the status of your monthly payments to three credit reporting agencies: Trans Union, Experian, and Equifax.

Credit score may affect the availability, terms and cost of credit; your ability to obtain employment; access to auto insurance; and for some regulatory professions, the ability to obtain a license. It's very important to be sure that this information is correct. And it's up to the individual to make sure that their credit history is accurate. Errors occur; fraud and identity theft have affected almost 15,000,000 United States residents this year alone. In an age where technology has made so many things possible, it has also made the misuse of technology possible. It's very important to be aware of your account activity on a regular basis.
There are ways to prevent errors that may impact your credit worthiness: 1. Review your transactions regularly and match receipts to credit card and bank statements; 2. Use online banking and financial software such as Quicken Microsoft Money, download and regularly reconcile your statements (once set up, this can be very efficient); 3. When you see something that appears incorrect, take prompt action with the creditor to correct it. Some creditors limit time periods for making adjustments and you may find yourself paying for something that you didn't buy. 4. Using a credit card instead of a debit card may help you to recover fraudulent charges more quickly. Also, the theft of cash versus credit charge is more significant when you’re relying on cash to pay other bills. 5. Check your credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com. This provides free access once per year to your reports on Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. The agencies usually have identical or very similar information; you can virtually check it three times per year by putting a date on your calendar for every four months and running one credit report each time. 6. Educate yourself on how to prevent fraud and protect your credit. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/ is a government website that provides information on how to avoid identity theft. Like it or not, your credit history weighs heavily on how others do business with you. Protect it and ensure its accuracy, it’s up to you.

The Bull Run Mountains Part 2: Remembering Jackson Hallow, ‘a jewel within the mountains’ by John Toler
The effects of the Civil War in the Bull Run Mountains would be felt for years. Many of the menfolk who went off to war never returned, and structures deemed to have strategic value during the conflict were damaged or destroyed. Most of the large estates in the area survived the war, but with the end of slave labor to keep them going, the properties were soon divided up and sold. There were changes in the demographics as well. Jackson Hollow was no longer a commercial center, and by the end of the 19th century, the only residents were families living in relative isolation in the small cabins there. Bridget Town, an African American community, was established about 1900 in the mountains just south of Jackson Hollow. With a population of about 100 in its heyday, Bridgett Town had a general store, a school (Antioch/Murray), and a distillery. Further south, the village of Waterfall survived the war, and got the area’s first post office in 1874. But by the end of the 1890s, Waterfall had earned the reputation of being a rough place. There were no fewer than three barrooms contributing to the 20
village’s problems, the last of which finally closed in 1916, as a result of Virginia Prohibition. However, that did not mean the end of alcohol in the mountains, as moonshine was brewed up in the hills. By the early 1930s, at least four bed-and-breakfast businesses were operating in Waterfall, serving a clientele from the cities that came to enjoy the peace and clean air of the Bull Run Mountains. These B&Bs included Dora Gossom’s Waterfall House; the homes of Flora Smith and Howard Bell; and Hagley, owned by Randolph Smith. “Now the area – naturally beautiful with its forests and flowers, birds and small wild animals, and many pleasant trails – is a happy playground for weary city folks,” according to Prince William, the Story of Its Places and Its People. Activities included hayrides into the mountains, hiking and picnics. But the glory days of mountain retreats, however brief, would come later.

passed through several owners. In the 20th century, it was owned successively by Preston Noland, A.R.G. Bass, the Henry Wyatt Butler family, G. A. “Allie” Gossom, and Arnold and Annabelle Zimbro. In December 1958, David S. and Margaret R. Boger purchased the property from the Zimbros. Remarkably, after a controversial boundary survey was done in 1962, part of the Jackson
Hollow tract was in Scott District, Fauquier County. A native of Southwest Virginia, David Boger (18931995) had come to Northern Virginia in 1933. A bricklayer and builder by trade, he lived and worked in Falls Church and Fairfax County, where he subdivided property and built houses.

In 1943, Mr. and Mrs. Boger purchased Walnut Farm west of Thoroughfare, where he raised cattle, and continued his contracting business. Their daughter, Jane Boger Daughtery, remembers her father as a brilliant man, even though he had very little schooling. He was self-trained in many trades besides bricklaying and masonry, and was always curious to learn how to do something new, or how something worked. Jane, who runs cattle ranches in California, has many happy memories growing up on Walnut Farm. “But I’m the only one of the kids who got into the agriculture business,” she notes. Familiar with Jackson Hollow and Catharpin Run, Mr. Boger envisioned a fishing lake in the hills – operated as a private club – that could become a successful, family-run business. Shortly after purchasing the hollow property from the Zimbros, the Bogers went to work, setting up a new corporation, securing permits, and building a large earthen dam across Catharpin Run. The Jackson Hollow Fishing Club received its State Corporation Commission charter on November 24, 1959. Older son M. Daniel Boger, 78, who now lives in Woodbridge and Florida, recalls that the first effort to stock the lake ended in failure. “Dad bought 5,000 trout at $1 apiece, but because the water temperature wasn’t right, they all died,” he said. “We were taking dead trout out of the lake for days.”
To solve this dilemma, Mr. Boger contacted friends in the area who had ponds, and got permission to stock the lake with native fish – including bluegill, crappie and bass – that they caught with nets. Not long after establishing the fishing club, Mr. Boger started making plans to expand the operation into a full recreation facility. By 1963, he had added a large, two-story lodge, a combination office/residence, and a round, spring-fed swimming pool with bathhouse and snack bar. In addition, the property was improved with a ball field, picnic and camping areas, and volleyball and badminton courts. Members could hike on trails into the mountains on foot, or ride one of the club’s horses. The new business was called the Jackson Hollow Fishing and Recreation Club Inc., and offered family memberships for a $150 initiation fee and $50 per year dues. Applicants were required to have an interview by the club manager, provide three references, and have the approval of the membership committee before joining. The swimming pool was built of concrete and lined with flagstone. It had shallow and deep sections, and a diving platform in the center. There was a white sand beach from the edge of the pool to the concession stand, which had a patio on its flat roof. Dan Boger was the certified Water Safety Instructor, in charge of swimming lessons and the five other lifeguards that watched over the

swimmers – sometimes as many as 120 in the water at a time. The fact that many youngsters learned to swim at Jackson Hollow was borne out in the declining number of rescues each year, according to Dan Boger. “We had to pull out 36 people the first year, 15 the second year, and only two the third year,” he recalls. Jane Boger was in charge of the trail rides and other popular horse-related activities. Youngest child Douglas Boger, of Warrenton, who was a teenager when the club was started, also helped. The club was open 10 months a year, and in order to maximize the use of the facilities, the Bogers held a number of special events. The first floor of the lodge was used for dances and other gatherings, including Halloween and New Year’s parties. Members also enjoyed “crab feeds,” consuming 12-14 bushels of crabs brought from Washington, D.C. and boiled at the club, and a barbecue prepared by a former White House chef.
This artist’s rendering of the swimming pool and concession stand and beach was featured on one of the club’s brochures. 22

The fishing lake was built damming Catharpin Run, and was stocked with a variety of fish, including bass, bluegill, crappie and pike. Visible in background is the office/residence used by the Bogers.
At the end of each summer, the club hosted a picnic, which often drew over 1,200 members and guests.
Decline and devastation Dan left Jackson Hollow in 1967 after he bought a marina in Maryland, and management responsibilities shifted to Jane for the next three summer seasons. But by then, the club was suffering a decline in membership, despite the family’s efforts to attract business with special promotions and events. Jane attributes this situation to the opening of new recreation facilities in the area, including the nearby Evergreen Country Club, which offered something different and was more easily accessible. After Jane left in 1971, the Bogers kept the business going by renting out the facilities. One memorable event was a large concert in the hollow put on by a local promoter that attracted about 4,000 attendees. Although Jane and Dan were not there, they heard that the event was successful but rowdy, and was not repeated.
One of the unique features of the lodge were the supports and trusses made of logs, with the bark still on them, leading some youngsters to think that trees were growing through the building.
Mountains, normally calm streams like Catharpin Run became torrents. The earthen dam in Jackson Hollow that held the lake was breached, flooding the facilities below and filling the swimming pool with debris.
putting all of Jackson Hollow in Prince William County – this time, once and for all.
Campers in the hills above Jackson Hollow were trapped for a while, but reached safety. However, a 21-year-old man who was driving on Mountain Road when the dam burst was drowned – one of the three lives lost in Prince William County during the storm.
In line with their mission to preserve the land in the Bull Run Mountains, in the early 1980s the Virginia Outdoors Foundation entered into negotiations to buy the Jackson Hollow property.
Due to the cost of repairing the extensive damage, and Mr. Boger, by then nearly 80 years old, decided not to rebuild. In addition, the work would require a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and costly, timeconsuming inspections.
Then, on the night of Wednesday, June 21, 1972, a natural disaster struck Jackson Hollow in the form of Hurricane Agnes.
The club’s corporate charter was dissolved on June 1, 1973, and ownership of the property reverted to the family members. David and Margaret Boger sold their remaining property at Walnut Farm, and moved back to Falls Church. Over the next ten years, the Jackson Hollow property was occasionally rented out while the senior Bogers enjoyed retirement and traveled around the country.
Over 14 inches of rain, accompanied by high winds, fell on the region, causing massive flooding. In the Bull Run
One notable change came in 1982, when a precise county line survey and final boundary adjustment was made,

By then, the property consisted of 276.5718 acres of land; the two-story lodge and the office/residence, both considered in good condition; and the old bathhouse, which had been used as a workshop. The swimming pool was also listed in the deed, but it was ruined in the flood. Final cost of the property was $414,857, or about $1,500 per acre. Only minor improvements to the property were made while the VOF evaluated their purchase. The tenants who had lived there since 1978 would remain in the residence, and the land once used for active recreation has slowly returned to its natural state. Sadly, the lodge – which had survived the hurricane and years of neglect – was lost in a suspicious fire on the night of March 18, 1988. Later, the remains of the lodge were pushed into what was left of the swimming pool, and the area covered with dirt. mountains continued on page 26

This task was performed by the Bull Run Mountain Stewardship Committee, a group of 20 dedicated volunteers that have provided the VOF with extensive property management assistance for nearly 20 years. “The committee is organized and managed by Mike Massey and Randy Dasher,” according to Summer 2012 edition of the Virginia Outdoors Foundation newsletter. “Mike is a surveyor and civil engineer based out of Manassas, and Randy is the retired director of facility services for Prince William County Public Schools.” The BRMSC has undertaken many projects within the 2,486-acre Bull Run Mountains Natural Area preserve (BRMNA), including marking boundaries and building trails, footbridges and boardwalks. Earlier this year, the volunteers constructed a new parking area by the main trailhead near the Chapman-Beverley Mill, using equipment and asphalt donated by local companies. The efforts of the BRMSC have proven critical to opening parts of the mountains to the public, mostly at the southern
end near the mill, and assisting with the management of these areas. In 2010, the VOF Brian Laposy was hired as the parttime Ranger for the BRMNA. Unlike those parts of the mountain where visitors may park their vehicles and hike along well-marked trails, Jackson Hollow is not open to the public. Almost back to its natural state, the hollow is a veritable laboratory for the study of native plants, animals and insects. “It is a jewel within the Bull Run Mountains,” said VOF’s Leslie Grayson, who has worked with scientists and environmentalists on their studies in Jackson Hollow. Ms. Grayson also notes that just north of the hollow is the geographic divide between two watersheds – where streams either flow south into Catharpin Run and eventually into the Occoquan, or north into Hungry Run and Little River, and then to municipal water supplies. After 40 years, only a few traces of the old recreation club can still be found: the low stone platforms for the charcoal grills that dot the picnic area, and the faint paths leading uphill to the overgrown campsites.
The bathhouse/concession stand had restrooms and a flat roof that served as a patio.
VOF Executive Director Bob Lee, Deputy Director for Policy and Acquisitions Leslie Grayson, and Brian Laposay, the part-time BRMNA Ranger, study a map showing the original layout of the club from the trail above the old lake site.
Perhaps the most striking relic is what is left of the breached earthen dam, and the tall drainage structure standing alone just inside it, mute testimony to the original depth of the lake. Today, Jackson Hollow consists mainly of the free-running Catharpin Run, a series of small berms, and a large wetland area that was once the lake. The days when it was a noisy, happy and active playground are just a memory.
Horses and ponies were available at the Jackson Hollow Recreation Club for pony and trail rides.

Today’s Empowered Woman
Claiming Your Voice by Michelle Kelley
True empowerment for a woman comes from knowing how you feel and then being able to communicate your needs and feelings appropriately in your relationships. An empowered woman knows when to say ‘no’ and where to draw the line in her various relationships. She can recognize her own needs and ask for help when necessary.
Today’s empowered woman knows what she deserves -- and knows how to command -- respect in all relationships. She does not define herself only by her accomplishments in the world (Olympic gold medalist, Secretary of State, Company President or Chairwoman, etc.), no matter how amazing her accomplishments. Today’s empowered woman: ● Listens to and honors her inner voice, and uses her outer voice to express herself positively in all of her relationships. ● Recognizes her strengths and embraces her weaknesses. ● Does not tolerate disrespectful or contemptuous behavior in her relationships because she values her time and energy. ● Avoids emotionally draining relationships and negativity. ● Understands that the choices she has made in the past have created her current situation and knows that she is able to create a different future for herself. ● Believes she deserves and is capable of achieving success in life, as she defines success for herself. Very little has been written on the topics of empowered women and healthy relationships outside the world of business and the workforce.
The 1940s version of an empowered woman focused on her physical accomplishments more than her emotional well-being and or the health of her personal relationships. The iconic Rosie the Riveter poster spoke to women’s changing role in the workplace, where they were rising to the challenges of performing traditional “men’s work.” In the 1960s, Betty Friedan spearheaded the feminist movement, prompting more and more women to question their traditional roles as homemaker and mother, and seek more fulfilling educational and career opportunities. In the 1990s, Hillary Clinton introduced the possibility that a woman could, indeed, be elected President of the United States. Today’s empowered woman wants to express herself more fully and authentically in all her relationships -- with her husband, children, parents, siblings, romantic partners, friends, and colleagues in the workplace. Many women I have counseled in my private practice have confided in me that they feel their situation or relationship is hopeless, or that their husband or another key person in their lives won’t listen. Many of my clients have chosen to silence their voice, out of a feeling of hopelessness or despair. The client may feel overpowered, threatened or invalidated in her key relationships. claiming your voice continued on page 30

claiming your voice continued from page 28
A woman who has not learned how to communicate her wants and needs effectively in her relationships is likely to feel stuck, hopeless and despairing. Communication is oxygen in a relationship. Without it, the relationship will die. Many girls and women struggle to break free of their “people pleaser” personality. Women who are “people pleasers” often choose not to voice their thoughts and opinions out of fear of not being liked or fear of confrontation. I recall my own silence as an adolescent female and the pain it caused me. When girls lose their connection to their voice, and the ability to express their wants and needs, their feeling of personal empowerment suffers. Perhaps you can remember an instance when your voice was not validated or heard. How did that make you feel? What effect did that have on your confidence?
When a girl’s or woman’s thoughts and opinions are not validated, she will eventually experience a disconnection between her inner voice and her inner truth, and the messages she communicates to others. She may begin to shut down emotionally. She may end up traveling down the road of self-medication, drugs, abusive relationships and emotional problems. A girl or woman who has been silenced has suffered an assault on her spirit. How to Honor and Claim Your Voice: 1. Create a list of your strengths. Own them. Be proud of them. Don’t wait for others to validate your strengths. Validate yourself. 2. Do you have a voice in decision making? You have a right to be a part of this process. You have to give yourself permission first. 3. Revisit (reflect upon) a hurtful statement that was made to you. How would you use your voice now? What would you say differently? 4. Take care of yourself (emotionally as well as physically). Too often women put themselves last in this area. I can truly understand the phrase, “If I only knew then what I know now.” But there is no way that I could have known then what I know now. I had to live through my experiences and deal with the consequences. Only then was I able to move forward. Through education, guidance and support I help women to create positive change in themselves first and their relationships second. I have traveled the road
of personal disempowerment, and I know the obstacles women encounter along that road. Women need to be conscious about the choices they are making in friendships, romance and life. “We are not flowers in a field. We are supposed to be active participants in all areas of our lives.” It is necessary to start asking for change, for respect, to be heard and to be validated. I often share my experiences and lessons learned in hope that some may avoid the seemingly lengthy amount of time it can take to learn how to make good choices. A girl in one of my “Heathy Relationships” classes told me that she didn’t realize that she could play her part differently. In other words she didn’t have to put up with any type of mistreatment or bullying. I gave her permission and the tools she needed to stand up for herself. Women can and should do the same. I recently read a quote by Meg Ryan which stated, “If you empower women, you can change the world.” Women are often the ones who have been assigned the role of emotional caretaker in families. The self-help industry is largely geared towards women and so women may be leading the way and that is okay. It really doesn’t matter who leads as long as we are heading in the right direction. Culturally, we have given men the message that their work and career should come first in their lives. This is slowly changing. Many women are beginning to initiate positive change in their relationships. Ultimately the positive effects will reach men, families and society. Let the change begin 2012 is not the end of the world as we are in a time of great change in our personal relationships.

The Reviews: "Pearmund Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon offers dark fruit with oak nuances. The taste is of dark fruit, especially blackberries. The fruity finish has silky tannins." - WineTrailTraveler.com "Decidedly savory on the nose, this is stippled with hints of pepper, smoke and leather, all accenting the core of boysenberry and blackberry. The firm tannins and balanced acids create a shell for the dark fruit flavors, and the structure stays strong throughout the finish. Let this one breathe in the glass; with air, the palate fills out." - Andrew Hoover
