Haymarket Baptist Church Brings Together

the Best of the Old and New By John T. Toler

S

ituated on Washington Street (Route 55) near the center of town, Haymarket Baptist Church has undergone many changes since its founding in the late 19th century. Originally a simple country church on a well-traveled dirt road, Haymarket Baptist Church has been expanded several times, most notably in 1960, with the completion of the first floor of the education wing, and in 1965, when a second floor was added. In 1973, the sanctuary was renovated and refurnished, and in 1987, the preschool/ kindergarten wing was completed. For many of the building projects, materials have been donated or purchased by members of the congregation, and much of the labor provided by church members, allowing the church to grow virtually debt-free. The congregation currently stands at 350 members, with around 150 active. “The numbers fluctuate each week,” notes the pastor, Rev. Dr. Charles Stewart, who has served Haymarket Baptist Church since April 1, 2007. “We have a very mobile and

diverse congregation, with a nice mixture of young and old. We also have many visitors each week.” A native of Atlanta, Rev. Stewart has been in the ministry for 19 years, receiving his Doctorate of Ministry from Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, Ky. His wife Amy is also a graduate of the Seminary. They live near Warrenton with their three children, aged 15, nine and three. With increasing membership and additional new ministries, plans are in the works for another expansion: a new, larger sanctuary, designed to preserve and enhance the appearance of the historic, original part of the church. Rev. Stewart describes the addition as a “…modification of the present structure.” Basically, the classic Country Gothic sanctuary will be enlarged on the east side, over the grassy area parallel to Route 55 in front of the church office. “The new sanctuary will fit into the architectural scheme of the church,” Rev. Stewart added. “The steeple and the front of the church will remain as they are allowing

church members to hold on to the past, while embracing the new.” The existing sanctuary has the pews facing the altar from front-to-back (or north-south) and can comfortably seat 150 worshippers. The new sanctuary would have the congregation facing the altar from west-to-east, providing space for up to 300 worshippers at each service. In addition, the church parking lot will be paved. “The Town of Haymarket is presently engaged in trying to carry out its own streetscape project, putting brick sidewalks all the way down here, and lowering the street,” explained Rev. Stewart. “Parts of their plan are connected to parts of our plan.” Details under study include a storm drainage pipe that the church would have to run under their parking lot. In addition to coordinating the church’s plans with the town’s plans, the economic downturn – which has affected pledges of support – has caused the church to put the expansion plans on hold, according to Rev. Stewart. In the meantime, the

permitting process is being pursued, as well as the coordination of the two projects.

Good Works For the time being, the church is continuing its good works. Now in its 21st year in operation, between 300350 children attend the preschool and kindergarten each week. Rev. Stewart described the school as “…a ministry of the church, that is self-regulating.” Other ongoing ministry and outreach programs include support of mission trips to South Africa, and youth group mission trips to inner-city Toronto, Canada and Washington, D.C. Closer to home, Haymarket Baptist Church participates in family outreach programs during Easter and Halloween. The annual Haymarket Day offers a good opportunity for people to learn about the church, as members serve bottled water to the visitors along the parade route, and long-time church member Mrs. Jane Lawler Strong gives tours of the sanctuary. At Christmas, the church stages “…a living Nativity scene, with a choir, a real camel, sheep and goats,” according to Rev. Stewart. “Hot chocolate and snacks are served afterward.” Rev. Stewart notes that the only existing history of Haymarket Baptist Church was written in the mid-1980s, just prior to a period of turmoil that lasted until the arrival of his predecessor, Rev. Dallas Stallings, in 1996. Several members left the church to reestablish Antioch Baptist Church at Waterfall, which had been inactive since 1962 due to declining of membership. “A lot of churches go through this (experience), as our church did,” said Rev. Stewart. Rev. Stallings did much to “… get the church back on its feet, and moving in a positive direction,” said Rev. Stewart. He noted that Rev Stallings was also instrumental in starting the current expansion project.

Recalling the Early Days Haymarket Baptist Church was established in 1894 by 28 former members of the Antioch Baptist Church, which had been founded in 1837 by members of the Long Branch Baptist Church at Halfway, in Fauquier County. These churches were part of the Potomac Baptist Association, developed from the old Ketoctin Association, established in 1766. Work on the original church building on Washington Street in Haymarket was July 2011

started soon afterward, and services were first held there in 1895. Research has been done by former church member Carey Corder of Nokesville, who attended Haymarket Baptist Church from 1937, when he was four years old, until 1952, when his family moved to Manassas. He has learned that the original church “…consisted of a sanctuary with three small classrooms behind the baptistery, that was also the pulpit area.” According to an older church history prepared by former pastor Rev. Larry Lee, the baptistery was filled with water drained from the roof, or brought from the North Branch, near the church. Railroad irons heated in an outside fire were submerged in the baptistery to warm the water. Sunday School classes were held in the church, using the pews for seating, and heat for the building was provided by a potbelly stove. There was no bathroom, and of course, no air conditioning. “The first pastor was Rev. C. Wirt Trainum, who also served the field of churches consisting of Antioch, Little River and Manassas, as well as Haymarket. His pastorate began in 1894 and ended in 1904,” according to Mr. Corder. As pastor of a field of four churches, Rev. Trainum would preach at least one Sunday at each during the month, or sometimes two, depending on distance and traveling conditions. It is interesting to note that Rev. Trainum was also a graduate of Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville. He was succeeded by Rev. W.E. Lowe, who was followed by Rev. J.A.T. Marsteller and Rev. Thomas Dunlap Douglas Clark in 1910. All continued to serve multiple churches in addition to Haymarket. This practice continued until 1962. “I have been particularly interested in Rev. Clark, as he has my birth date,” wrote Mr. Corder. “Also, the fact that he married my parents, W. E. Corder and Irene Wood, at the farm of my grandparents, H. C. and Nettie G. Wood, in November 1924. My mother told me that Rev. Clark was loving and gracious.” Mrs. Strong. 81, of Gainesville was born at Thoroughfare, and is a life-long member of Haymarket Baptist Church. In addition to giving guided tours of the sanctuary, she has sung in the choir, taught Sunday School, prepared food baskets for the needy during the holidays, and participated in other church ministries. Her father, Quentin Lawler Sr., was a long-time member of the church, and after their marriage, her mother, the former Pauline Carter, joined the church. Mrs.

Strong was the first woman to be ordained a deacon of the church, beginning her first three-year term as an active deacon in January 1986. She recalls the church building in the 1930s, and that potbelly stove. “When the wind blew in the wrong direction, smoke would blow back into the sanctuary,” she said. “It was really terrible.” She also remembers when work needed to be done, including the sanding of the floor of the Sunday School room, church members always pitched in to help. For this particular task, Mrs. Strong worked with fellow Sunday School teacher Elsie Fletcher. “You would do anything you could to help,” she said. “But I’m sure the floor had some waves in it!” Recalling the days when Haymarket Baptist was one of several church was served by a pastor, she notes that Sunday School was always held every week, and that the worship service was usually held on the second and fourth Sundays (or first and third Sundays, but always twice a month) when the pastor could come to the church. In the 1930s, two of the small classrooms were eliminated, making space for the choir area. The church building would remain basically the unchanged until the Town of Haymarket began to grow in the 1960s. In 1962, Rev. Russell O. Cutchins was called as the first full-time pastor of Haymarket Baptist Church. He would serve until 1967, when he was succeeded by Rev. Walter L. Bradley. In addition to the expansion of the building, the amount of land owned by the church increased over the years. Land was given in 1954 and 1964 by members of the Gillis family, as well as a 20-foot right-of-way giving access to part of the property donated by Wilhelmina Rust in November 1966. In 1984, a ¾ acre tract adjacent to the church was purchased to provide room for future expansion, bringing the amount of land owned to just over four acres. In 1956, Robert L. Fletcher donated property in Haymarket for a parsonage in memory of his wife, Elsie L. Fletcher. A parsonage was built, and served as the home of the pastor and his family until 1983, when the decision was made to sell the parsonage and provide the pastor with a housing allowance instead. Mrs. Strong has been an active supporter of the church preschool since it opened. “We have been so blessed to have such a wonderful pre-school,” she said. “It has always had a great reputation. I remember when parents would wait in the church parking lot from midnight until the time 7

The Years of Change

to register the next morning, in order to get their children enrolled. Now it’s done by e-mail.” But there is still a waiting list. Mrs. Strong explains that children attending the school don’t have to be members of the church, or even Baptists, and noted that the student population is quite diverse, with Indian, Asian Hispanic and other ethnic groups. “Their parents send them here because they want their children to learn,” said Mrs. Strong. It is a church-run school that teaches the gospel without regard to religious denominations. Mrs. Strong praised the school for its parent participation, and that one of the school mottoes, “First time, obey”

is practiced at home as well as at school. She believes that “first learning to obey” their teachers and parents protects young children from the risks and dangers they might face. Due to the popularity of the school program, there have been many requests that the church add a first grade class. “But we just don’t have the room,” said Mrs. Strong.

The growth brought on by the opening of Interstate 66 in the 1970s changed Haymarket. The growing population has resulted in increased membership for the church, with congregants drawn not only from the town itself, but also from Gainesville, Manassas, Nokesville and Fauquier County. “People transferring their membership brought with them new ideas and influences from their previous church homes,” according to the church history. “These younger people willingly assumed leadership positions in the church, representing a change from the older, long-term members, to more active participation by younger members.” By continuing to meet the spiritual needs of its diverse congregation and reaching out to the community through its ministries, the future of Haymarket Baptist Church is bright. As for the past, the church has a shared history with the Town of Haymarket, a fact celebrated by former church member Carey Corder: “Amid all this change, Haymarket Baptist Church still adds days and years to the History of Haymarket.”

Family

tri

by: Jim Aram

Triathlons easily provide all members of a family a fun way to participate - truly a family sport. As the sun rose on Sunday, May 29 it revealed an overcast sky and what would turn out to be quite the humid day. On the deck of the Larry Week’s Outdoor Pool at Vint Hill roughly 175 adults of all shapes and sizes stood waiting to jump in the pool and begin a journey that would physically challenge their bodies for the next hour or two. They were about to participate in the 4th Annual Bristow Tri and Swim (BRATS) Salute to the Military Sprint Triathlon. At 7:00 am the day began with a 300 meter swim in the pool with a 20 km bike ride on the surrounding rolling hills and finishing with a 5 km run around the Vint Hill Campus. This athletic challenge would test the condition and stamina of many seasoned athletes daring them to finish within the hour. Meanwhile, another challenge was being staged – the youth triathlon. That’s right the sport of triathlon can be a family sport. In addition to adult triathlons, youth triathlons are available with age groups ranging from 7 to 10

and 11 to 14. Generally, the 7 to 10 year olds will swim 50 meters, bike 2.1 miles and run 0.81 miles, whereas the 11 to 14 year olds will swim 100 meters, bike 3.2 miles and run 1.35 miles. The distances are whittled down considerably for youth competitions but participation and completion are extraordinary accomplishments for these kids. While most kids were still in their pajamas – these youth were actively living a healthy lifestyle, building confidence and most importantly enjoying themselves. Triathlon is a relatively new sport, beginning in the mid 1970’s as an off beat training exercise for runners competing in distance races such as marathons or 10Ks. During the 1980’s the sport garnered tremendous growth and at the end of the decade the International Triathlon Union was formed as an international governing body with a goal of acceptance of the sport by the International Olympic Committee. Throughout the 1990’s the sport was included as part of the Pan American

Games and the Goodwill Games. Triathlon was officially recognized as a metal sport in the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney, Australia.

Perhaps the most well know event is the Ironman World Championship held in Hawaii each year. This incredible feat of human endurance starts with a 2.4 mile open water swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride and rounded out with running a full marathon (26.2 miles). There are several distances offered, the most popular including the Half – Ironman, the Olympic Distance (1.5 km swim / 40 km bike / 10 km run) and the Sprint Distance (which is typically half the Olympic Distance). Completing any triathlon distance is a celebratory accomplishment for any individual – it is important to start somewhere regardless of the distance. A variety of athletes find triathlons but most enter through the root of the sport – running. Runners were looking to add elements to their training and tri continued on page 12

Youth that enter the sport usually do so as part of their local swim club. Whatever the reason for getting started, you will find that one cannot do so without family support. Of course, this event represents the culmination of several weeks or even months of training. Fitting training into our busy schedules requires a very understanding and flexible family. Early morning runs, long weekend bike rides and evening swims can put extra stress on a spouse or cut into other family time activities. But, the early runs, rides, and swim sessions create an excellent activity that all members of the family can participate in. Many parents compete in the adult tri while their children support them and the children begin their tri the parents are there to cheer for their kids. Not an athlete you say? To put on a triathlon requires a lot of man hours and volunteers. Guiding athletes throughout the course and cheering them on is a critical aspect of the sport.

If you have a family member competing in the race, why not volunteer to man a spot on the course - there’s no better way to get a front row seat to cheer on your family member and the other competitors (and who knows, perhaps you’ll catch the bug yourself). Personally, I volunteered to help at a triathlon and I was not content sitting on the sidelines. So, I got a tune up on my 20 year old bike, learned to swim a bit better and I was out there several months later as a participant.

Think you might like to get involved in the sport but you’re a bit intimidated? Don’t be. I’ve learned that the tri community is very supportive and caring. It’s make up of a variety of people with different body shapes and endurance levels. You don’t have to be a world class swimmer, own a fancy bike or even be a great runner. By participating, you become part of the family itself.

If you want to learn more about the sport or perhaps get involved, here are few resources that will point you in the right direction. Online, you can visit www.beginnertriathlete.com. This site www.beginnertriathlete.com. provides help in determining your goals and providing an executable plan. After you get that first one under your belt and can call yourself a triathlete, you can visit www.trifind.com to find other local or nationwide triathlons to enter (or volunteer). Remember, you do not have to travel to Hawaii to participate in the sport of triathlon (although admittedly it would be nice)! You can visit www. BristowTriandSwim.com to see what a local group is doing for the sport. In addition to putting on the Salute to the Military Sprint Tri, they also have the Sizzling Summer Tri coming up on July 17. While it may be too late to train for this tri, they are always looking for volunteers. In addition to the triathlons, the BRATS put on several races each year as well as a swimming program geared towards triathlon swims.

I’ll close with a saying that I saw on the back of a shirt at race this Spring:

((Dead (D Dead ead Last Last Finish Finish is greater than Did Did Not Not Finish Finish is much greater than Did Did Not Not Start) Start)) Start

Haymarket Gainesville Business Association

FACEBOOK FOR BUSINESS

So you set up a Fan Page, then what?

by: Jessica Melander

Facebook has come a long way since its birth in 2004. It was once found only in dorms or in teenager’s bedrooms, until Mom found out about it. Then someone told Grandma and it was no longer a place for teens to post photos of wild parties. Now just about every major business or Politian uses it to reach its millions of users by having a Facebook Fan Page. I know you’ve set one up too, maybe you heard that you should from your local “Social Media Guru,” maybe your kid suggested it or that young new employee. Whoever it was that told you to do it, was right. The only problem is what have you done with it? Are you updating it? Does it consistently appear in the news feed of its fans? Well it should be. In this fast moving, instantly gratifying world we live in you have to make sure you are constantly reminding your “fans” of why they “liked” your page in the first place. Here are a few tips to make sure you are always on their mind: Come across an interesting business article online? Or a story of something that is going on in your community? Post a link to the story on your Fan Page. This is an easy way to appear in a fan’s news feed and to make them feel like you’ve provided an added value. Also, the beauty of a link is its ability to be so easily “shared” by your fans, giving you even more exposure. Hire a new employee? Introduce them to your fans with a quick one or two lines. The HGBA is the fastest growing professional association in the area; we want to hear your story. From the new meeting venues each month to expert speakers, with HGBA you will get noticed and keep you informed. Join us, and we’ll help you go places. HGBA is a 501 (c) (6) non-profit all volunteer organization. Find out more, read back articles and supporting video clips at HGBA.biz.

The “Events” feature can also be used to advertise promotions you may be running. It’s an easy way to get your fans involved, and let them promote you by inviting their own friends. Post photos of employees at Chamber or HGBA events, or of your company picnic, people like to associate your business with people, it makes them feel connected to you. Ask them to participate. “We are celebrating our 12 year anniversary! Can we get 12 “likes” to show your support?” or “We are just 5 fans away from having 100 fans! We want to reach our goal of 100 fans by the end of the week. Will help by telling your friends about us?” These are just a few ideas to help you engage your fans, but remember every business is different. Play around with it; try what works best for you. It’s a free way to promote your business, what have you got to lose?

Comprehensive Breast Care in Your Community After an intensive review and thorough site visit, the Breast Center at the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas has been granted a threeyear full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. The Breast Center offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary breast care. Its physicians and technologists are ready to help women cope with the physical as well as emotional consequences of breast cancer. Sanjeev Aggarwal, M.D., radiation oncologist at the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas

Dr. John Williams, breast surgeon

Accreditation by the NAPBC is given only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care. During the rigorous survey process, the center must show that it complies with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease.

their patients. The group of about a dozen physicians – including medical director of the Cancer Center, radiation oncologist Sanjeev Aggarwal, M.D. – gathers every month to talk about the physical and emotional needs of their patients. Together, they share techniques and compare notes on their patients’ surgical, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. “Breast cancer is very complex,” says Dr. John Williams, breast surgeon. “Particularly when I use a new technique, I need to know how my surgery is going to affect a patient’s radiation or chemotherapy treatment. That’s why we make this effort to talk to one another.” Receiving care at an NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to: • Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services.

The standards include proficiency in the areas of center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options.

Physicians at the Breast Center make a special effort to communicate about all

• Most important, quality breast care close to home.

• A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options. The team includes physicians specializing in breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiology and pathology.

Fauquier Health New Endocrinologist Joins Fauquier Health Fauquier Health recently welcomed an endocrinologist to its family of healthcare providers. Lida Tabatabaeian, M.D., will be operating Fauquier Health Endocrinology, providing care to those with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, lipid disorders, osteoporosis, pituitary disease, adrenal disease, thyroid cancer, bone and mineral diseases and hypogonadism. Dr. Tabatabaeian completed her endocrinology fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She is a former Virginia resident, and was happy to relocate to the area. “During my first visit to Fauquier Health, of course I fell in love with the area and people,” Dr. Tabatabaeian says. “I really liked the town of Warrenton; I like the idea of working in a small town because I’ll have a group of patients that I can get to know, and I’ll be able to provide a continuance of care.” Being able to provide ongoing care was one of the main reasons Dr. Tabatabaeian chose endocrinology as her specialty field. “Endocrinology is something I’ve been drawn to since my early days in medical school,” she says. “I like the science behind it; I also like that it requires a lot of patient interaction.” Dr. Tabatabaeian’s holistic approach to care will also fit nicely with Fauquier Health’s patientcentered Planetree model of care. “I try to see patients as a whole,” she explains. “I always try to apply the most up-to-date research to manage treatment, but the most appropriate plan for one individual may not work for another patient. That’s why I need to understand a patient’s comprehensive health condition.” Diabetes is one of the most common diseases that affects the endocrine system, and Dr. Tabatabaeian says a holistic approach works really well to treat the disease. “Diabetes is a

complicated, multi-factor disease. Many social, economical, cultural, environmental and genetic factors contribute to the disease, and these factors cannot be overlooked.” Dr. Tabatabaeian believes the most important step in the management of diabetes is patient education. Her primary goal is to make sure each patient knows what diabetes is, why it is so critical to get it under control, which complications it can cause and how, and what steps to take to control the disease and minimize complications. “At the end of the day, it is patients who need to take their medications and follow the recommendations, and patients will not follow through unless they have a good understanding of the problem.” Dr. Tabatabaeian says lifestyle change is the number one step in the management of diabetes. “I have actually seen patients reverse the disease. In fact, I have had patients on very high doses of insulin who were able to stop treatment when they made significant lifestyle changes.” However effective lifestyle changes can be, medication may be necessary for some. Dr. Tabatabaeian adds that there are several great, well-studied medications available that can be selected based on the patient’s age and other ongoing medical conditions. Whether she is treating diabetes, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, or any of the other diseases affecting the endocrine system, Dr. Tabatabaeian believes that being a physician is all about compassion, communication and reaching out. “I really like what I do. And I really like my patients. I try to care for my patients as if they were a part of my own family.”

Endocrinologist Lida Tabatabaeian, M.D., will be seeing patients on Thursdays at Fauquier Health Internal Medicine at Lake Manassas. She may be reached at 703-743-7300.

& Achieve

Written Goals are Important! here’s why... by: Sheri Winesett

In his book, What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School, Mark McCormack made an interesting discovery about the 1979 graduating MBA class. Within the group, 3% had written goals, 13% had thought of some goals and the balance were just thrilled to be out of school (I am sure you remember those feelings). The interesting part was what happened ten years later. The group that had non-written goals were making TWICE in the field compared to the 84% of those who had no goals leaving Harvard. The group with written goals was making TEN TIMES what the other 97% were making on average. I think you would agree that the folks at Harvard have a long history of knowing what they are doing. So if the top 3% were able to make TEN TIMES the money as everyone else by simply writing out their goals, why aren’t you doing it? Every business needs an action plan that contains goals, strategies and tasks to achieve the company goals! At a minimum, write down all your goals for the next year. Then assign strategies and weekly tasks required to reach each goal. Most importantly, find someone to share them with and have them check up on you monthly (quarterly at a minimum) to see if you are making progress. Have them hold you accountable with winnings for completion. Be SMART.

Achievable, Realistic and within a certain Timeframe. Here are 12 basic steps you can follow when creating a plan to help you grow your business. 1: Define Your Uniqueness In your mind, what makes who you are and what you have to offer unique? As a result of this uniqueness, what benefits arise for your prospects? Before you even begin, you will want to know the answers to these questions because they will define who you are and what you have to offer. 2: Create Your Vision You must have a vision of what you are going to create. Your prospects will want to know what you are planning to build, and it will be a useful tool for attracting the types of people you desire to work with. 3: Develop Your Mission What is it you intend to do for your customers? How will you do it? These are just a couple of the questions you will want to answer when you describe what the purpose of your business is. You will want to communicate your mission statement to all of your customers to let them know what your business does and stands for. 4: Define Your Goals Defining your goals will make it easier for you to succeed because you will create a clear picture of where you want to be. Take time to create your annual, semi-annual, quarterly, and monthly goals for your business. Make certain they include financial targets.

You want the plan to be Specific, Measurable,

5: Analyze Your Market Below are a few suggestions to start you off, but are by no means exclusive. First, define your market as a metropolitan statistical area, MSA. This reference is available in any public library reference department. It will provide you with information pertaining to population, number of households, average income, types of jobs held and major businesses, etc. It will give you a good snapshot! Second, determine your market’s growth as an economic development area. This information is readily available from your economic development department. This will give you an idea of your market’s potential and future. Third, find out who the small to medium size businesses are in your market. Join your local Chamber of Commerce. You will receive a membership directory that will make an initial database and contact list for prospective clients. Knowing your market’s business makeup will assist you in your prospecting. Your market is “your backyard,” so you will want to know everything you possibly can about it and what could possibly affect it. You will want to own it. 6: Identify Your Competition Know your competition as well as you know yourself. Why? - Because you will want to distinguish your services from theirs to develop your market. Unless you know who they are, who they target, what they do, how they do it, and what they charge, you will not know how to differentiate your services from theirs. At the bare minimum you will want to know their names, locations, sizes, territories, services, target markets and prices. 7: Select Your Customers Decide what type of person(s) your customers are or you wish to be. Create a profile which describes the type(s) that you may use as a reference point when prospects begin appearing. 8: Pick Your Strategies With a good idea of the type of people you want as customers, pick the strategies you want to use to bring them on board per your goals. You may also need to pick some strategies to maintain consistent delivery of your product to your customers. 9: List Your Actions To implement your chosen strategies to reach your goals, you must take action. What actions will you take and when. 20

“Plan your work and work your plan.”

goals continued from page 18

10: Make Your Pledge Pledge to yourself in writing that you will implement this action plan and share. 11: Evaluate Your Results Set aside time on a regular basis to evaluate your progress in achieving your goals. You may find that your strategies and actions need to be modified to reach your goals. It is important that you assess what is and is not working for you. Stay positive, stay focused and keep your momentum going. Your persistence will bring you the abundance you desire and deserve! 12: Revisions As you proceed with working your plan, revisions will be necessary. You may need to make your goals higher, increase your strategies or actions, etc The old adage says, “Plan your work and work your plan.” By putting earnest time and attention into your Action Plan, you will set your course for manifesting your life of abundance! Remember, people do not plan to fail, they fail to plan! So ensure your success by planning diligently! The sooner you start planning the sooner you will be making TEN TIMES more than your competition. You’d be crazy not to do it!

Hot Diggity-Dog!

As temperatures begin to rise with the arrival of summer, please don’t leave dogs unattended in vehicles for even short periods of time. Research shows that on an 80-degree day the temperature inside a closed vehicle can reach up to 120 degrees, or higher, in a matter of minutes. At such high temperatures animals can become overheated, displaying symptoms such as brain damage, heat stroke and/or suffocation – and death can occur. An animal should not be kept in a car when external temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

the Garden

Lady

pssst... A very wise and experienced gardener once told me that Viburnums are Northern Virgina’s best kept secret. They shouldn’t be. Viburnums are fabulous shrubs that solve lots of our gardening problems. First, deer leave them alone. That could be enough right there but they also offer lovely spring flowers – some of them with exotic fragrance in small nosegay clusters and some with lacey, layered bunches of white flowers. After flowering they make berries that birds love. While average size is between six and ten feet, Viburnums don’t mind being pruned smaller and the intensely fragrant Korean Spice comes in a dwarf size too. I have some growing in a very dry, sunny area and I have them defying all odds in wet shade. Viburnums keep on giving all year with dark maroon or purple foliage in the fall and some hold their leaves all winter. They are readily available in our area so try one or more.

pass it on!

PRINCE WILLIAM CHAMBER

Drop Off “Tools for School” Supplies at Nearby Businesses Prince William Chamber of Commerce Hosts Supply Drive to Aid Local Students Now through Wednesday, August 17, the Prince William Chamber of Commerce invites residents and businesses to work together to help area students. During its annual Tools for School drive, Chamber members throughout Prince William will serve as drop-off locations, making it convenient to donate back-to-school basics to children who might otherwise go without. Donations are also accepted through the

Chamber website, where backpacks full of supplies can be purchased. The small act of donating school supplies can have a huge impact on a child. After the first day of school, one young recipient exclaimed, “When my teacher said who doesn’t have the things on the supply list; guess what? I didn’t have to raise my hand!’” The Education Committee of the Chamber

organizes the drive as part of its efforts to enhance the educational experience for students in Prince William County and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. It is one of the many programs that support the Chamber mission of fostering economic growth and a high quality of life in Prince William. The Committee also organizes a Winter Warm-UP drive to provide warm clothing to students in Title I schools, where more than 50% of the children qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Other activities include participation in the Making It Real financial literacy exercise and National Young Readers Day, which last year reached 18,000 area students. “These children are our future workforce, our future leaders. It is important that we let them know this is a community that values their education and stands ready to help them reach their full potential,” said Rob Clapper, President & CEO of the Prince William Chamber. To find a participating location, visit www. pwchamber.org or call (703)368-6600. Needed goods include back packs, loose leaf paper and calculators; a full supply list is available online. The Chamber will work with several community partners and the three local school systems to distribute supplies.
