Haymarket Gainesville Business Association
BIG
service impact
local businesses recognized for excellent service
A few weeks ago,
I called Pei Wei Asian Diner in Gainesville to order dinner for my family. We tend to order our favorites every time: honey chicken and Mongolian beef. The cool thing about it is that Pei Wei knows this already. They use caller-ID technology and they greet me by name when I call and their computer also has a history of my orders so they know what I’m probably going to order. They even know that I like the Honey Chicken without the garnish on top. How cool is that?
If you’re a local business owner feeling the pinch, don’t give into the temptation of lowering prices. HINT: It won’t improve your business nearly as much as you may think. Instead, focus on two important qualities that all successful businesses posses: FRIENDLY and MEMORABLE. The best part about improving these two parts of your business is that they essentially cost nothing. Here are some examples of friendly and memorable service that I have experienced locally: ● 14910 Washington Street in Haymarket has been 3 different restaurants since I moved to Haymarket. The first two failed. El Vaquero West has been there for several years. They are packed every night. Why? The food is great. They gladly re-fill your drinks and chips/salsa at no extra charge. They make you feel special by calling you amigo/ amiga. Oh…and they’re ALWAYS smiling. ● Zinga Frozen Yogurt in Gainesville has established a wonderful Facebook fan page. They post pictures of their customers. They run promotions on Facebook all the time (e.g. first 10 people to come in and mention this Facebook post get free yogurt tonight). NOTE: Facebook is free. ● BB&T’s Heathcote Blvd branch has quarterly customer appreciation days. It’s more than just a free coffee mug… there is free food from local restaurants and they allow their customers to set up booths for free to market their products/ services to all attendees. Brilliant. ● Ever drive by Gainesville Chick-fil-A at lunchtime? It’s easy to figure out why cars are wrapped around the parking lot while across the street, BK and Taco Bell only have a handful of cars in line. Chick-fil-A provides a consistently friendly experience on every visit. They also understand that children ultimately make the final call on which fast food joint to go to, so they hold themed events almost every week. In fact, each Chick-fil-A has a marketing manager!
If your business didn’t have the great 1st quarter you were hoping for, I’m challenging you to put more time into the experience that you provide to your customers every time they call or walk in your door. What are you doing to make them want to go tell others about you? Here are some suggestions: ● Start learning your customers’ first names and begin greeting them by first name when they come into your place of business. EVEN BETTER: If you’re a dry cleaner or similar business, start recognizing your customer’s car as they pull up and have their order ready when they walk in. I go into my dry cleaners every week. And every week they greet me with “PHONE NUMBER!” Not great. ● Invite your 10 best customers to meet you for a cup of coffee and ask them why they do business with you. They will give you a report card that no “business expert” could ever provide! ● When a customer leaves and says Thank-You, quit saying “No Problem” and replace it with “My Pleasure”. RitzCarlton started saying this years ago and they’re one of the most recognized brands in the country when it comes to memorable service. ● Start a business page on Facebook and cater it to your business. Don’t make it a constant sales pitch for your company. If you’re a florist, post pictures of your best arrangements. If you’re an insurance agent post a picture of your proud customer who just came by to add their brand new car to their policy. If you’re a restaurant, post your daily specials at the same time, every day. Tom Bigoski is the President/CEO of The Bigoski Insurance Agency in Gainesville and also a proud resident of the Town of Haymarket. He can be reached at 571-969-3743 or at TheBigoskiAgency.com

VIRGINIA TECH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION | PRINCE WILLIAM CHAPTER The Virginia Tech Alumni Association is an independent, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote the welfare of the university by cultivating a mutually beneficial relationship between Virginia Tech and its growing worldwide community of alumni. The Alumni Association provides and supports alumni programs and services, facilitates communication with alumni, and seeks to strengthen alumni bonds of fellowship, professional association and university affiliation. The Prince William Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association proudly serves the communities of Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. The chapter’s primary goals are to encourage scholarship of our community’s youth, volunteerism of the entire community, and to build Hokie camaraderie. The Prince William Chapter has won various awards from the Virginia Tech Alumni Association including Outstanding Chapter the last 5 years and Outstanding Golf Tournament. Last year, Prince William Chapter Officer Ryan Ardigo was named the 2011 Virginia Tech Alumni Association Outstanding Chapter Volunteer. The chapter encourages community service through its support of Prince William Habitat for Humanity, VDOT’s AdoptA-Highway program, an annual blood drive every April and other community service events. To ensure a balanced program, the chapter also sponsors speaking engagements, fundraising dinners, wine tours, game watching parties, baseball games, and a Student Send-Off luncheon.
The chapter rewards scholarships every June to local high school students who will be attending Virginia Tech. In keeping with the University›s motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), the chapter rewards scholarships based on community service involvement. In the chapter’s first four years, fifteen scholarships have been awarded to local students. All these students performed extraordinary service to the community beyond the service they were already doing for National Honor Society or other school related service organizations. Some examples of their community service includes sewing “Cancer Caps” for cancer patients, “Cool Ties” bandanas, and pillowcases for troops overseas, organizing blood drives and fundraisers, Potomac Watershed Clean-Up, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, tutoring and mentoring students, spring break trips to areas in need, and more. When reviewing the students’ applications, it makes the alumni proud that such well-rounded students will be attending Virginia Tech and representing Prince William County. Support for the scholarship program comes primarily from its annual golf tournament each June. The golf tournament has raised over $36,000 in its first four years, and the chapter anticipates this year to be their best yet. The 5th Annual Virginia Tech Alumni Golf Tournament, sponsored by Land Design Consultants, will be held at Virginia Oaks Golf Club in Gainesville on June 1, 2012. Event

highlights include 18 holes of championship golf, continental breakfast, catered luncheon, raffle and silent auction, putting contest, longest drive, closest to pin, longest putt, hole-in-one opportunities, a massage station, and great Hokie companionship. This year, the luncheon following the golf tournament will be provided by Bad to the Bone Smokehouse in Gainesville, a Hokieowned establishment. Dessert will be provided by Confections Bakery in Manassas. Other hole sponsors include Miller Toyota, Capital Pension Services, R.W. Murray Co., Invite Me Invitations, and Stags’ Leap Winery/Greg Norman Wine Estates, along with the many local businesses that have donated goods and services for the raffle and silent auction. One of the items that the golfers will have a chance to bid on is a wine barrel from Vint Hill Craft Winery. The highest bidder will have the opportunity to be a winemaker for a year. The winner will select grapes, crush, ferment, test, rack, bottle, and label their own wine. In addition, they will get to participate in barrel tastings and winemaking classes throughout the process. In the end, they will have about 300 personalized bottles of their very own wine to share with family and friends. Other Haymarket businesses and organizations that are supporting the golf tournament include Tony’s NY Pizza, The Winery at La Grange, Lion & Bull, A La Carte, Foster’s Grille, Regency at Dominion Valley, and others. For the third year in a row, the golf tournament is a qualifying event for the Acura College Alumni Team Championship. The winning team of the golf tournament will receive invites to represent Virginia Tech and compete at the 2012 Acura College Alumni Team Championship in Pinehurst, NC in November. The package includes resort accommodations for 4 days/3 nights, airport transfers and resort transportation, breakfast each day, welcome reception, Acura Champions banquet, Acura Skill Challenge, 2 rounds of championship golf (Pinehurst Nos. 2 and 4), team gifts, team pictures, and team uniforms. The teams that won the chapter’s golf tournament the last two years and went to Pinehurst both said the event was a «once in a lifetime opportunity». In addition to the invitations for the winning team, Acura will be sponsoring a holein-one prize at each of the par 3s at our event, including the chance
10
to drive away with a 2012 Acura. In keeping with the community service theme, the chapter will ask all participants to arrive at the golf course with non-perishable food, baby food, formula, diapers, toys, games, blankets, towels, soap and shampoo. Last year these items were delivered to the Rainbow Station in Haymarket, who delivered them to the tornadostruck region of Joplin, MO. The recipient of this year’s collection of goods will be determined as we get closer to the date of the golf tournament. Registration for the golf tournament is only $400 for a foursome! There are hole sponsorships available for $300. For more information about the golf tournament, including registration information and sponsorship opportunities, visit the chapter›s golf tournament website at www.pwcvtaagolf.weebly.com. In late July/Early August, the chapter will host their annual Student Send-off at Bad to the Bones Smokehouse in Gainesville. This event gives incoming students the opportunity to meet other students from Prince William County that will be attending Virginia Tech. This is a great opportunity for students and parents to discuss Virginia Tech and ask questions of current students and alumni. The chapter also provides assistance in recruiting students by attending college recruiting events across the county. On Wednesday, May 27th, the chapter will be hosting an Eat Wings Raise Funds event at Buffalo Wild Wings in Gainesville. The chapter encourages everyone to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings that night since a small percentage of all receipts will be deposited into the chapter’s scholarship endowment. To learn more about the chapter, visit its website at www. pwhokies.com, and “Like” the chapter’s Facebook page, www. facebook.com/PWCVTAA. If you would like to receive emails from the chapter about upcoming events, email Ryan Ardigo at rardigo@ comcast.net. The Prince William Chapter looks forward to meeting all local Hokies at future events. All events sponsored by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association are open to friends and families that may not be Virginia Tech alumni.

History
Tyler family properties around Haymarket The Shelter and The Highlands, Woodlawn and Meadow Farm Susan Berkeley Alrich Low, half-sister of Anner Moss Alrich Tyler, painted this watercolor of The Shelter. Their father was Rev. William A. Alrich, who came to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in 1867. Courtesy of Ellie Ivancic. by John T. Toler
The Shelter and Clifton were Tyler homes located along Shelter Lane north of Haymarket, and along with The Highlands in the town were homes of “The Shelter” Tylers. Unfortunately, no traces of these old homes exist today. The land upon which The Shelter and Clifton were built was a 1,500acre parcel purchased by Martin Cockburn from Samuel Beall in 1798. Mr. Cockburn and his wife, nee’ Anne Bronaugh, had no children, so the property was left to their nephews, Dr. John Bronaugh and Martin Bronaugh. The Shelter became Tyler property sometime after Dr. John and Rose Bronaugh’s daughter Mary Emily Bronaugh (1799-1869) married William Bailey Tyler (1799-1851). Because the deed book where the transaction was recorded no longer exists, it is not clear whether they purchased or inherited the three parcels including The Shelter from Martin Bronaugh. 12
In Prince William, the Story of its Places and its People, The Shelter is described in 1941 as “…a white frame house of three sections – two, one-anda-half, and one storied beneath gable roofs – in a grove below the hill. Three stone chimneys add to the irregularity of the roofline.” William B. and Mary Emily Tyler sold the Greenfield house and property next door to The Shelter to the Latham family in the 1840s. According to family legend, Robert Latham was hired to build the house for the Tylers, and they wound up selling it to him. The property is still owned by the Latham family. William B. Tyler was an attorney with a practice in Leesburg, where he and Mary Emily lived until his death in 1858. The Shelter was rented out during this time, but after Mr. Tyler’s death, Mary Emily sold the Leesburg property and moved back to The Shelter. There,
she took care of the three children of her deceased daughter Mary (18221856) and late husband, Dr. John Grayson (c. 1815-1855), while her sons Robert H. (1838-1903) and George B. Tyler (1831-1900) were away fighting for the Confederacy. After the war, son Robert H. Tyler built Clifton on The Shelter property. After their mother’s death, Robert and George Tyler divided the property, with Robert keeping Clifton and George remaining at The Shelter. When Robert’s son Bailey Tyler (18661938) reached adulthood, his uncle George invited him to live at The Shelter and farm the land. George continued to live there until his death, upon which Bailey Tyler and his wife, Anner Moss Alrich Tyler (1871-1914) inherited the property. From there, the property passed to Mary Love Alrich Tyler (1870-1956). Haymarket Lifestyle
In the meantime, Bailey Tyler’s son, William B. “Jack” Tyler (1900-1972) and his wife Marion Caroline Dulany Tyler (1903-1996) were living in Bethesda, Md. to be close to Jack’s job as an automobile mechanic in Washington, D.C. Following the death of his father in 1938, they returned to Haymarket to live at The Shelter and help Mary Love Tyler at the farm. Jack also operated an auto repair shop in Haymarket across from Gossom’s Grocery for many years.
(1826-1845) and George B. Tyler. Also buried there were Robert H. Tyler’s in-laws, Benjamin T. (1807-1876) and Edmonia Chinn (1813-1895), and Julia Anne Peake Tyler (1802-1849), the wife of George Gray Tyler (1797-1856).
Upon Mary Love Tyler’s death, ownership of The Shelter passed to her sister, Anner Moss Tyler (1903-1963), a professor at Louisiana State University who had planned to return to live at The Shelter after retiring. However, this was not to be, and upon her death, The Shelter was left to her surviving siblings. It fell to brother Jack to sell the property, and the proceeds were divided up between the surviving children.
The Highlands
Jack and Marion had three daughters, Anner Moss Tyler (b. 1925), who married Warren Somerville; Marion Dulany Tyler (b. 1927), and Priscilla Bladen Tyler, who married Eugene Garcia, and is the mother of Haymarket historian Ellie Ivancic. Although she lived in Maryland, Anner Moss Tyler Somerville spent most of her summers at The Shelter. “It was a part of my life I wish my children could have known,” she said. After The Shelter was sold in 1968, it stood empty and vandals damaged the house, a situation that still saddens Mrs. Somerville. Thirty years later, the house was still standing, but according to Prince William: A Past to Preserve, published by the Prince William Historical Commission in 1998, “The Shelter was in danger of collapse,” and classified it as “Ruins.” The house was later demolished, and a new large-lot subdivision built on the property. According to Prince William County, Its Places and Its People, members of the Tyler family were buried in the cemetery at The Shelter, including William B. and Mary Emily Tyler, and their sons Robert H., John Bronaugh May 2012
Family members believe the family cemetery was at Clifton, not The Shelter. But in either case, the cemetery and those who rest there have been lost.
Clifton burned in 1902, and Robert H. Tyler died the following year. The remaining family lived briefly in a house between Gainesville and Haymarket before moving to The Highlands, a twostory frame house at the intersection of Old Carolina Road and Jefferson Street in Haymarket. The house stood on what is the highest elevation in Haymarket, above the North Fork and the railroad tracks. The Highlands property was also known as “The Hill” and “Tyler’s Hill,” and offered a favorite sledding hill for Haymarket children. In addition to matriarch Sallie Chinn Tyler, her son George G. and daughters Sallie N. and Matilda G. Tyler lived at The Highlands. For years daughter Mary Anne was a nurse at a girls’ school in Chevy Chase, Md.; Edmonia, a nurse in Richmond; and Cary Caroline was the governess for the Valentine family in Richmond. They were often away from Haymarket, but considered The Highlands their home base, and lived there in retirement. After she married, Sallie Norton Tyler (1883-1961) and her husband, Grayson Tyler (1879-1970) also lived at The Highlands, with Sallie commuting to her job at the Pentagon. In 1951, the Tyler sisters deeded their shares of the property at Clifton to their nephew, Robert N. Tyler, an attorney living in Chicago. Robert held on to the property until the late 1960s, when it was sold and subsequently developed.
Recalling life at The Shelter and The Highlands Ms. McNeale Tyler Smith, of Doswell, is the daughter of Grayson McNeale Tyler (1916-1959) and Marian Karsten Tyler, and granddaughter of Grayson Tyler and Sallie Norton Tyler. Although she lived in Fredericksburg and Richmond much of her life, she visited Haymarket often, and has many memories of The Shelter and The Highlands. “As a city girl, it was really fun to go to The Shelter,” Ms. Smith recalls. “The house had sort of a ‘dogtrot’ layout, with a wide main hallway and stairs leading to the second floor. There was a drawing room to the left, and a bedroom to the right.” She was impressed with the fine mantles and woodwork in the house, and the English cellar where the kitchen was located. Other fond memory were taking a bath in a copper tub in the kitchen, using water heated on a woodstove when she was six years old, and being “fascinated” by the outhouse. Ms. Smith also spent a lot of time at The Highlands, which she remembers as a large house with porches on three sides and wonderful views of the Bull Run Mountains. “Lots of life was spent on the porches,” Ms. Smith recalled. “The Highlands was certainly not an elegant southern mansion, but a home with a long history, a trove of memories, and an open door to a special Southern hospitality.” But not all her memories are happy. Her father suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, and spent the last five years of his life at The Highlands, where family members cared for him. He died in January 1959, and the next month, during one of the coldest winters on record, The Highlands was destroyed by fire. “Because it was so cold, all four fireplaces were burning. Aunt Mary Ann thought she smelled something burning, and went up the steps to the attic several times to check. Late in tylers continued on page 14

the afternoon smoke began poring out of the attic,” said Ms. Smith. “The fire company came, and although they thought they had it contained, it got away from them. They ran out of water, and since the North Fork was frozen, they couldn’t get water from there.” Everyone made it out, and before the fire spread, some of the family’s furniture, including their piano was removed from the house. But as the fire spread, the dazed women stood outside in the bitter cold watching the blaze. “Dick Jordan, one of the volunteer firemen, said they had to move the aunts out of their way,” Ms. Smith recalled. Coming to the scene of the fire a few days later, Ms. Smith remembers that only the foundation and the hearth remained. Much was lost in the fire, including an irreplaceable portrait of ancestor Annie Hunton Tyler. A set of benches on the porch her late father had built using wood from the old Haymarket railroad station were saved, but stolen during the fire. Jimmy Gossom rented the Tyler sisters a house he owned in Haymarket until nephew Robert N. Tyler could get a new house built on the site. It was completed in 1960, and they lived there until all had passed away. Ms. Smith and her sister, Sally Tyler Carter, acquired The Highlands in 1976. They sold the property, which had been zoned for commercial use, in 2003. Shortly afterward the house was torn down, but nothing has never been built on the site. The sadness connected to the passing of so many family members over the years, and the loss of The Shelter and The Highlands – so much a part of the family history – makes 14
returning to Haymarket difficult for Ms. Smith. But she knows that in the years since the first Tyler family settled in Haymarket, its many descendants have migrated across the Commonwealth and nation, bringing honor and recognition to the Tyler name and its distinguished heritage.
Woodlawn Built in four sections between 1780-1830, the main house at Woodlawn – ancestral home of the “Woodlawn Tylers” – sits quietly along present-day Haymarket Drive, east of the intersection with U.S. 15. It is believed that the original owner of the property was Edward Carter, of Cloverland, near Thoroughfare Gap. Woodlawn was later the home of William Tyler (1756-1816) and afterward, his son, Judge John Webb Tyler (1798-1862) and his wife Mary. They raised a large family that included five sons and seven daughters while living at Woodlawn. (See Haymarket Lifestyle, April 2012). The main house is described as “… a rambling, four-part, 1½ and two-story, frame constructed, aluminum-siding clad house,” in the survey done by the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission several years ago. The 1½ story easternmost section is believed to be the oldest part of the house, measuring 17 feet by 36 feet and having a steeply pitched roof and interior brick chimney. “The three basement windows strongly suggest that the earliest form of tylers continued on page 16

According to Prince William County Historic Preservation Chief Brendon Hanafin, the county will pass ownership of the house and acreage to the Prince William Historic Preservation Foundation, a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization, which will protect the property by placing it under state and county historic easements. The foundation will then offer the property for sale. Since Woodlawn will be a registered historic site, the new owners would qualify for significant tax credits to be applied to the costs of restoring the house, noted Mr. Hanafin. In addition, the foundation will assist the new owners with guidelines on how to repair the house. The historic home is in poor condition but still restorable, and the house and nine acres at Woodlawn have been proffered to Prince William County as part of the rezoning for the rest of the property.
this house was that of a three-bay house with a side passage, a main entrance probably having once been where the bay window is on the south side,” according to the survey. The main entrance is in the two-story, Federal-style westernmost section, which has an exterior stone-and-brick chimney and exhibits a side-hall plan. In between the two-story addition and the original structure are two 1½-story sections, with a shed-roof containing the kitchen on the north side of the larger 1½ story center section. The survey notes that the house was built facing south, but that the presentday access off Haymarket Drive is from the north. “There is a screened porch across the front (actual rear) of the twostory part,” according to the survey. Woodlawn is further described in Prince William: A Past to Preserve, as “…one of the few remaining tripartite houses that were once prevalent in Prince William County, and (in 1998) is in excellent condition.” Woodlawn was “…probably used as a hospital and 16
possibly as a Union headquarters during the Civil War.” According to the historical narrative in the Virginia Historic Landmarks survey, Annie W. Davis acquired Woodlawn in 1890 as a result of a suit in chancery. Subsequent owners were Blanche D. Currie, who acquired the property from the Davis family in 1918 and 1923, and Mr. and Mrs. Kent Currie, who received the property, then consisting of 305 acres, from Blanche Currie in 1938. In 1964, the University of Virginia received Woodlawn as a gift from the estate of Kent Currie. The University of Virginia Foundation (a separate entity from the University) is the current owner. In January 2008, the property was rezoned for single-family residential development, and recently a site plan, including the layout of the development, streets and a school site, was submitted to Prince William County for review. Part of the proffer agreement is that once the site plan is approved, the owners will give the county the historic
The main house is currently boardedup and surrounded by a chain link fence. The foundation has set a fundraising goal of $50,000 this year for Woodlawn. After assuming ownership, the money will be used to make needed repairs and to make the house more attractive to potential buyers.
Meadow Farm While it is likely that Woodlawn can be saved for future generations, Meadow Farm, another Tyler property just to the northeast, survives only as an obscure historical footnote. Once located down a long driveway on the east side of present-day U.S. 29-211 just north of the Shops at Stonewall retail center, the original main house there dated back to the late 1700s. According to the 1937 Works Progress Administration of Virginia Historical Inventory, the two-story house measured 40 feet by 15 feet, and was “… of frame, very finely built, with a central hall. The chimneys were very large, and likewise the fireplaces. There was an outer kitchen at the end, and numerous cabins of log, and other outbuildings that surrounded the yard.” tylers continued on page 18

Judge John Webb Tyler owned the property until 1835, when it was sold to Dr. James W. F. Macrea. Dr. Macrea was married to Susan Tyler, the daughter of George Gray and Cecilia C. Tyler. He later remarried, and the property passed to his widow, Maria Macrea, who sold the property to James and Jessie Hall of Washington, D.C. in 1898. Susan R. Morton of Haymarket conducted research for the WPA survey. According to the sources she interviewed, the main house and most of the outbuilding at Meadow Farm burned in 1917, leaving nothing but the stone foundations. The chimneys were later torn down and the brick and stone salvaged. Meadow Farm was sold again in 1928 to Raleigh Strother. By 1937, the property was owned by the Fauquier National Bank. The 1937 survey described what 18
remained of Meadow Farm by then: “Meadow Farm is but the ghost of a beautiful home today, the house having been destroyed by fire some 20 years ago…. The gardens were said to have been very fine; there are still the wraiths of boxwoods that appeared to have bordered the walk, some of them over 16 feet tall, but sadly broken by the grazing cattle. Here-and-there roses appear among the grass and weeds, and sweet herbs send out a pungent scent as one steps on them in the tangle of herbage. “Some 300 feet to the southeast of the house is the remains of the old graveyard. There was once a large and pretty cemetery, located in a grove of trees. There are numerous graves, but only one that has any inscription: ‘Louisa Tyler, died …’ with part of the stone chipped off. “I have learned, on good authority
from people who have lived for years in the neighborhood, that one of the late owners took up the stones that were not too close to the trees and plowed up the land for a cornfield. From the location of the present cornfield and also of the graves that are left, it seems as if it could well be fact.” It is likely that Louisa Tyler was one of Judge John Webb Tyler’s sisters. It also makes sense that William Henry Tyler, the eldest son of John W. and Mary Tyler who died at Woodlawn in 1853, was also buried there. Research indicates that first wife Mary Tyler was also buried in the cemetery at Meadow Farm, and since the Judge’s grave is not in Warrenton (where second wife Gwynetta Baylor Tyler and their daughter Constance Tyler are buried) or in Haymarket, he was

probably buried there as well. In later years, Meadow Farm was converted to dairy farm, with “…a large, modern main house and extensive dairy buildings gleaming against a background of trees,” according to Prince William: The Story of Its Places and Its People, published in 1941 and based on the earlier WPA writings. After the dairy operations ceased in the 1950s, the Partridge School used the property for several years. After the school closed, the property was left unused; subsequently, the land was rezoned for residential and commercial development, and the buildings demolished. It is now a thriving retail center and golfing community. Map from the 1930s indicates location of Meadow Farm, northeast of the intersection of Old Carolina Road and U.S. 29. The original quarter-mile long driveway to the house was located approximately at present-day Lake Manassas Drive. Library of Virginia.

Fauquier Health Fauquier Hospital Introduces New Tool for 24/7 Stroke Care Fauquier Hospital was confirmed as a Certified Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission in February of 2011 and passed its annual inspection on March 23. The designation recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. To receive accreditation, hospitals must demonstrate compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and standards. Fauquier Hospital’s stroke program provides a coordinated response to treat patients who present symptoms of a possible stroke. Ina Bowman, director of Fauquier Hospital’s Emergency Department, explained the importance of quick action in case of a stroke: “Some stroke patients can dramatically increase their chances of a full recovery if they receive certain medication within 180 minutes of the onset of symptoms.” When a potential stroke patient comes into the emergency room, an alert goes out to physicians, CAT scan staff and the laboratory, as well as speech, occupational, and physical therapists. These professionals work together to determine if the patient is a candidate for the clotbusting medication. Beginning April 2, Fauquier Hospital will have another tool to help address stroke symptoms quickly. Fauquier Hospital
Emergency Department physicians will collaborate via crystal clear video feed with board-certified neurologists to quickly and accurately diagnose and treat patients suffering from neurological emergencies, including stroke. This partnership with Specialists On Call, Inc., will give patients access to around-the-clock critical care in neurology. Chief Medical Officer Anhtai Nguyen, M.D., said, “Our neurologists provide consistent and high quality of care for all stroke patients, but cannot be on call every minute of every day. Because timely treatment is so crucial in stroke cases, we felt it was vital to always have a neurologist available to assess patients immediately.” “With Fauquier Hospital’s new state-of-theart technology, a neurologist will be able to read CT scans and lab results in real time, discuss treatment with the patient and the patient’s family, and recommend medication and procedures without delay.” Specialists on Call’s board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists adhere to strict standards of practice when discussing, diagnosing and recommending treatment options to hospital staff and patients. With videoconferencing technology and secure lines of communication, neurologists will interact directly with hospital physicians,
‘Timely treatment is crucial in stroke cases.’ Dr. Anhtai Nguyen, Chief Medical Officer Fauquier Health nurses, patients and their families in a completely personalized bedside consultation, making the experience comfortable for all involved. Specialists on Call is located in Leesburg, Virginia and operates in 180 hospitals across 12 states, providing more than 1,500 consultations a month. In any community, highly qualified medical specialists are in demand. Once a patient displaying acute stroke symptoms arrives in the ED, the teleneurology program assures that a specialist is providing expertise within 15 minutes. For stroke patients, that could make all the difference for a full recovery.
Sleep Apnea Leads to Daytime Drowsiness If you sleep for eight hours most nights, but are always exhausted, the problem might be sleep apnea. Ear, nose and throat specialist Jairo Torres, M.D., of Fauquier Health ENT, explains, “When you have sleep apnea, the muscles in the back of the throat relax and block breathing. This causes you to stop breathing momentarily. The constant disruption of the sleep cycle prevents a good night’s sleep.” Certain factors increase the risk of sleep apnea, including: -- Being overweight -- A neck size larger than 16 inches -- High blood pressure -- Chronic nasal congestion -- Diabetes -- Being over age 60 -- A family history of sleep apnea -- Smoking -- Using alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers (these relax the muscles in the throat)
Dr. Jairo Torres, ENT

Some signs that indicate you should talk to your doctor about sleep apnea testing include: snoring loud enough to disturb your sleep or that of others; shortness of breath that wakes you; morning headaches; or excessive daytime drowsiness. Talk to your doctor; he or she can determine whether your snoring is just a nuisance or an important symptom. Dr. Torres sees patients at Fauquier Health Internal Medicine at Lake Manassas. Crapemyrtles
Beautifully bright long lasting flowers keep the Crapemyrtle as a regular feature in our yards. Each year this resilient tree adds charm to our community, making it destination worthy. However, we seem to butcher it’s simple name and the plant itself every season. There are plenty of incorrect variations that novice gardeners, growers as well as professionals frequently misuse. In addition to the spelling hackjob, we physically over prune. Let’s show the Crapemyrtle a little respect this year by correctly spelling it’s name and learning the proper way to manage it’s growth. There is Crapemyrtle murder being done all over the area every spring. Somehow, someone decided the way to successfully grow a Crapemyrtle is to chop the top off of it every year. I don’t know who started this but they are wrong. The only reason to chop the top off of this tree is because it is dropping leaves, flowers and fruit into your gutters or rubbing up against your siding. In either of these cases the tree was planted too close to your
house and can be kept away by cutting off the offending branches. In every other case they should be allowed to grow tall and graceful and loose. When a branch is cut it grows 4 to 5 weaker branches. When those are cut they each put out 4 or 5 more. This creates a congested tree which makes it not nearly as pretty and much more prone to disease. If you have one of these chopped off trees, the best thing to do is select the strongest and thickest of the new growth branches and cut out the weak ones. After a few years the it will recover into a beautiful, many trunked, strong tree. Lucky for everyone who insists on doing a yearly massacre, Crapemyrtles, especially in Northern Virginia, are tolerant, patient and determined trees. Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, moved from Centreville to Haymarket six and a half years ago. They live on ten acres where they garden extensively. Lynne applies what she learns in her gardens to her garden maintenance business - The Garden Lady. Contact her at: Lgalluzzo@comcast.net or www. TheGardenLady.biz.

Recognizing & Using Your Natural Gifts It’s really hard to pound a round peg into a square hole. Whether you naturally love music, are an incredible athlete or really enjoy baking, we are all born with an abundance of natural gifts. When I was nine years old, I talked my sister, who was seven at the time, into letting me cut her hair like Dorothy Hamill, the famous Olympic figure skater who helped make the short “wedge cut” famous in the 1970s. I saw her on TV and thought it would look GREAT on my sister, who had long hair down to her waist! This was my “first” haircut. When my mom found us in the living room with big strands of hair lying all around us, she chose to encourage me instead of punish me! She was not happy mind you, but she handled it with grace. I am not suggesting you go out and try to fix your parents’ car if you are interested in mechanics or cut a tree down if you think you may like to be a landscaper. Rather, understand that we all have natural talents that can be cultivated in the right environment—with love, encouragement and heaps of patience! Just think if my mom would have reacted differently, I may have chosen a completely different path. Instead, I am a salon owner that teaches other people how to cut hair now! It is a true blessing to operate using your natural gifts, and it’s a present we can give to others to support them in every way we can!
Dos and Don’ts of Nail Care Do:
Don’t:
Use a moisturizer with sunscreen on your hands every day; a person’s age shows first in the hands. You’ll thank me someday!
Get your nails done anywhere that looks dirty. You’re sure to acquire a fungus.
Use nail oil on your nails and cuticles a couple of times a week.
Get your cuticles cut. Instead, have them gently pushed back.
Keep a light-grained nail file in your purse. If you get a snag you can smooth it quickly and the likeliness of the nail ripping off lessens considerably.
Use your friends’ nail tools. They can carry bacteria. Sanitize yours with Barbicide, Marvicide or Ultronics.
Pick off your acrylic nails, it damages the nail bed.
Always use a base coat and a top coat. This will protect your nails from staining and chipping. Gloria Harding is the co-founder (along with husband Wayne) of Tranquility Day Spa, which is located in downtown Haymarket. She has two daughters. 26

Nora | Taste of Lebanon
A gem in Gainesville, Nora Restaurant brings the community an authentic sense of Lebanese culture and a flavorful flair of cuisine. Owned and operated by Walid Boustany and family, they’ve created a sophisticated yet comfortable atmosphere for friends and family to enjoy. Nora boasts an extensive menu with quality ingredients and plentiful proportions made for sharing. Experience a true cultural and dining delight at Nora. Appetizers are always an excellent warm up to the palate and table conversation; make sure to order their Hoummos. This mix of pureed chickpeas with tahini sauce, lemon juice and garlic is paired perfectly with their handmade pitas. A Tabouleh Salad is a healthy choice, created with parsley, diced tomatoes, onions, spices and cracked wheat drizzled with imported olive oil and fresh lemon juice. Two must try items are their Falafel made with fava beans, chickpeas and spices as well as their Fried Kibbeh, small stuffed wheat shells with ground beef, onions, and pine nuts. Only the freshest ingredients are used when creating their large salads, sandwiches and pizzas. The Nora 28
Mediterranean Salad has ripe fruits mixed with vibrant greens, accented with walnuts, feta cheese and dried plums. Their Chicken Shawarma Pita Roll has marinated chicken topped with lettuce, grilled tomatoes, pickles, and onions with tahini sauce. Charbroiled tender pieces of beef with lettuce, grilled tomatoes, green peppers, onions, pickles and Sumac with your choice of either hummus or tahini sauce makes the delicious Shish Kebab Pita Roll. Lahm Bel Ajeen is their hot-from-theoven pizza adorned with sirloin beef, lamb, tomatoes, onions and pine nuts They have plenty of vegetarian options including the Hoummos Tabouleh, which is a pairing of their hummus with the tabouleh salad. Another veggielover favorite is their Manakeesh, a pizza covered with thyme, sesames seeds, onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers with olive oil. Nora’s main dishes are colorful, flavorful and tasteful. The Mixed Grill Plate is an excellent choice for first time visitors, it combines a mix of kafta, chicken kebab and shish kebab with mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions served with white rice vermicelli garnished with almonds, garlic and tahini sauce. Zucchini
stuffed with angus ground beef and rice simmered in a tomato sauce is the Mihshi Koosa, served with grape leaves packed with angus ground beef and rice. A meatless option is the Moujadarah, a fine mix of cooked rice and lentils topped with fried onions and served with a salad and yogurt. This restaurant also offers a kid friendly menu, freshly squeezed juices, bold coffee, teas, and splendid smoothies. They also provide a Hookah lounge next door with a full service bar, music, entertainment like belly dancing and televisions. Experience Lebanese culture with some friends and browse their juicy flavor tobacco selection. Nora is located at 14674 Lee Highway behind the Rite Aid and Bank of America. They are open six days a week Monday through Thursday 11:00am to 9:00pm plus Friday and Saturday 11:00am to 10:00pm. Carryout orders are welcome and delivery service is available for select areas. Lost Rhino New River Pale Ale | 5.6 ABV If you’re looking for a great beer, try the aromatic triple hopped American-style pale ale, New River. The use of American Crystal and Munich malts create sweetness in the finish that balances the hop bitterness. The blend of the Pacific Northwest hops Amarillo, Cascade, Columbus, and Centennial generates aroma and flavors of lemon, citrus, pine, and touches of sweet tropical fruit.
The Lost Rhino Story: Lost Rhino is a new craft brewery in Ashburn, VA with deep roots in Loudoun County. Brewers Matt Hagerman and Favio Garcia, formerly of Old Dominion, are back together and now creating some of the finest beers found in the area!
Comments:
Their focus is on using quality, local ingredients and fostering an open sense of community as much as building a business. They currently use noble Halertau and Saaz hops grown in Leesburg, Virginia, though they do import some from out of state as the local supply builds.
New River has a really nice malty profile with low bitterness but a moderate hop profile which rounds it out nicely. I get this somewhat sweet bread component, like those Sweet Hawaiian Rolls you can buy at the supermarket. – tlazaroff – BeerAdvocate.com
Lost Rhino brewery is currently under construction. They are putting in a brand spanking new brew pub! During the present construction, the brewery will be open only on Thurs 4-8, Fri & Sat 12-8
Growler pours light amber gold with a white head. Aromas are citrus hops and some floral. Taste is hoppy with citrus, floral and some herbal notes. The malts are thin and bready. Overall, a very good and sessionable pale ale. – hoosiers1994 – RateBeer.com
