Healthy

Reaching Athletic Potential Starts with Parents By Colby Schreckengost BS, MS, CPT

I love all sports and I know that I would not be where I am today without little league baseball, high school wrestling and college football. Besides keeping kids out of trouble; sports give kids something positive to invest their time in. Sports teach our kids teamwork and give them a feeling of camaraderie. Sports instill a love of movement and fitness that will motivate them and keep them healthy for the long term. Most of all, I think sports give our kids confidence; confidence to overcome obstacles in life such as losing a loved one or losing a job, or going through a divorce. There are a lot of lessons learned in the loss of a game. You must go back to work the next day and get better. Sports give you the confidence to ask the teacher a question in school. Being on a sports team can give your child the confidence to ask a girl out on a date, or to seek out a better job or start a new business. I like to think that I am in the confidence building business, not the athlete training business. But in the past 10 years the landscape of youth sports has taken a disturbing twist. I’ve had parents tell me “my kid has no confidence, is uncoordinated, and is carrying too much body fat, can you help me?” They also make comments like “my 10 yr. old has set all the records at his elementary school and he is going to be a star baseball player in college and probably the major leagues.” When did we become so negative or set such unrealistic expectations of our kids? After giving the subject much thought and hours of research plus my experience, here is my perspective.

We train a lot of athletes at Next Level (well over 400 last year). They range in age from 7 to 70, although most of them are under thirty. Our young athletes all want to reach their full athletic potential and most hope to play a sport in college one day. When we evaluate them, we love to talk to them about their goals and dreams and how we can help them. Their goals range from making a professional baseball roster to getting a collegiate scholarship. Some want to become a starter on a local high school varsity team; some are just concerned with making the JV team. We also train kids that are focused on getting into an Olympic Development Soccer Program or making an elite travel baseball team. Personally, what really inspires me is the kid who just wants to get off the bench and become a contributor on their recreational team. They tell me “last year I didn’t get to play much, this year I want to play.” Parents want the best for their kids and it is easy to get caught up in the process of developing elite athletes because the programs start at such a young age. Parents are constantly being told “if you don’t start young Timmy in a travel program by age 9, you might as well forget it.” This creates a sport specific young athlete. Sports specific athletes at a young age tend to incur overuse injuries and limited overall development (think about a soccer athlete not learning to throw a softball or a baseball player not learning how to change direction). potential continued on page 8

There is no doubt that some parents are obsessed with living their own athletic dreams through their kids. They put a lot of money, family time and energy into making that happen. The scheduling of these kids activities can get really hectic sometimes. I have a rule at the gym that I try to stick by; “if it takes longer than 15 minutes to schedule strength and conditioning training sessions for your son or daughter, than your kid is probably too busy to train at this time.” I pride myself on doing what’s right for the athlete, not necessarily what’s going to make us the most money.

{

{

How do we help our children reach their athletic potential and use athletics to make their lives better? How do we do that without them getting burned out, injured, or drive them insane because they don’t live up to our expectations?

Brandon Snyder of the Texas Rangers

Here are some basic guidelines that will help you make the right decisions for your young athletes.

NO SPORTS SPECIFICITY BEFORE PUBERTY Recent research shows that selecting one sport at a young age leads to overuse injuries and burnout. I see kids that by the time they’re going off to college on a soccer scholarship, they are so burned out that they don’t like their sport or their teammates! Have them play at least 2 sports until they’re 14 or 15.

TRAIN MORE THAN YOU PLAY Parents and young athletes today are so worried about “being seen” that they don’t spend enough time getting better. I once trained a legitimate Division One football prospect who attended a combine every weekend in the spring until his hamstring tore trying to run his best 40 yard dash time for the 8th weekend in a row. He should have spent more time training and getting ready for football season and less time showcasing his 40. Getting a scholarship in athletics is like farming, you keep focusing on getting better every day. If you become good enough someone will notice you.

LEARN TO ENJOY THE PROCESS I stole this one from Mike Krzyzewski, legendary basketball coach at Duke University. He says that “all of the great ones learn to enjoy and appreciate the practices, the weight training sessions and targeted drills that make them better at their craft.” Get 1% better every day: If you focus on becoming 1% better every day; over the next 50 workouts, you’ll be a 50% better player than you are today. Most athletes would take that in a heartbeat!

DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN A lot of parents think their kid will be the next Peyton Manning, Michael Jordon or David Beckham. I say “give ‘em a break, let ‘em be a kid, let ‘em have some fun. Take Will Rhymes of the Tampa Bay Rays 8

‘em to the movies or the park or better yet, take ‘em on a family vacation!” The chances of them growing up to be a sports icon are very minuscule. If they have the talent and the drive, they will get there.

TAKE TIME OFF I have trained professional football and professional baseball players. Those guys take at least 2-3 months off after the season to let their bodies recover and regenerate. On the flip side, I also know some 13 and 14 yr-old athletes that haven’t had 4 straight weeks away from their sport in over a year. Coaches claim that if athletes don’t touch the ball, they’ll lose their skills. Ridiculous! Give them a week or two of practice after some time off and they’ll be right back where they left off. My biggest fear is that their bodies won’t be able to hold up to the rigors of year round practicing and competing and that the daily grind of the same drills day after day will force them out of the sport.

TEMPER YOUR EXPECTATIONS A very successful high school football coach once said “As a parent you are not qualified to evaluate your own kid.” I think of that quote when I’m at a game and a parent is screaming at his kid who is giving great effort and just having a bad day. Or a parent is screaming at the coach (who is volunteering his time) to put her kid in the game. Take a step back and decompress.

TRAINING VS PLAYING CYCLES Think in terms of 10-12 week intervals. An athlete should play a season and train for a season, then play a season and train for a season. By training, I mean 3-4 days per week of strength training, plyometric and movement skills that are not always specific to their sport. This type of program will enhance his or her overall athletic ability and help him reach his potential injury free. It will also give them a great experience and keep them loving sports and movement their whole life.

We all want the best for our kids. It’s our nature to fight for them and give them every possible opportunity to reach their full athletic potential. Just remember their potential might be different then your expectations. Keep supporting your kids and their athletic endeavors; it will pay huge dividends down the road, but they may not be the next Stephen Strasburg, Mia Hamm or RGIII (who by the way was still running hurdles while playing football until his junior year in college). If they are destined for greatness, it will happen!

become aware

with early detection, most breast cancer is treatable, curable. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It is a great reminder for women to not forget about breast screening throughout the year. Make breast screening a part of your wellness routine of eating well and exercising regularly. It is easy to do and well worth the effort. Breast Screening is Important Every woman 18 years old and older should include breast screening in their personal wellness program. We cure the vast majority of women with breast cancer when the cancer is small and at an early stage. Screening allows you to detect breast lumps earlier than without breast screening. Below is a summary of the American Cancer Society recommended breast screening guidelines.

Components of Breast Screening Monthly Self Exams

Women of all ages should simply examine themselves monthly for breast lumps. It is important to know the normal texture of your breasts. If you understand what is normal for you, then you can earlier detect a new breast lump that may develop. Most breast lumps we see are not cancer. “Earlier” is better than “later” in finding a breast cancer.

}

We cure the vast majority of women with breast cancer when the cancer is small and at an early stage.

}

Annual Screening Mammograms Annual Physician Exam If you are 40 years old or older, it is important to get annual screening mammograms. Your physician will be happy to coordinate this for you as a part of your “Health Wellness” screening program. Mammograms save lives by detecting small breast cancers that cannot yet be felt. There have been some confusing recent recommendations that women should start at the age of 50. I still recommend starting annual mammograms at 40 years of age. Screening mammograms have been shown to be the most important component of Breast Screening.

Make sure your physician performs an annual breast exam when you visit their office for a check-up. They are trained to detect things that you might not notice yourself. That is a good time to get a prescription for your annual mammogram. Share with them any concerns or breast health questions you may have.

Breast Cancer Specialists If you find something, see your physician. They will refer you to a breast specialist for an expert evaluation. Breast surgeons compassionately guide a woman through the complex process of diagnosing and treating of a breast cancer. Remember, most breast lumps and abnormalities found on mammograms are not cancer! Breast Center at the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas We created the Breast Center at the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas to provide world class breast cancer care for our community. The Breast Center is nationally accredited and is the community’s focal point in providing access to breast care services. 12

change

Spiffing Up Silver Lake Park Families, businesses and organizations are welcome to join on October 13th When parents look for a park in the Gainesville District to have a family picnic or an opportunity to learn more about nature and enjoy the outdoors, the choices in the past have somewhat limited. But all of that is changing, and changing in a big way.

Initially, Silver Lake Park was the subject of considerable discussion among groups that wanted to manage and control the Park, including various non-profit land conservancy groups and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.

Silver Lake Park is roughly a 230acre plot in western Prince William County that was obtained as part of a proffer from Toll Brothers in 2006 in the development of the Dominion Valley community. The land, valued at approximately $3 million, is invaluable as a needed family recreation park for the citizens of the County.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors finally resolved the controversy by designating the park to be a part of the Prince William County Park Authority (now the County Parks & Recreation Department) park system. Silver Lake is designated for “passive use rather than for active or organized sports activities. The

decision to preserve the natural beauty of the land, and to dedicate the Park for passive family activities, is obviously a good one. Enjoying nature in its quiet, peaceful setting offers a unique change from parks where athletic fields and organized sports activities are the primary focus. With the limited County funds available to make needed enhancements to Silver Lake Park, Gainesville District Supervisor Pete Candland has organized an effort to develop a public-private coalition of corporations, community groups, churches, and HOA’s to transform silver lake park continued on page 16

Silver Lake Park into an attractive family destination in western Prince William County. The most important component of this coalition is participation by individual citizens who bring their families to this planned Service Day at Silver Lake Park. “The citizens of the Gainesville District are civic-minded and generous people,” Supervisor Candland says, “and we do not need government to do everything for us. Silver Lake Park needs just a little work to make it a real quality destination for families to enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors, and it is a crown jewel of nature literally in our own backyard.”

The Challenges The Silver Lake Park Revitalization Coalition is actively recruiting partners to provide the needed volunteers, building materials, financial support, and ideas to support the sustained maintenance of Silver Lake Park. The new Wal-Mart store has already pledged a significant financial contribution, and they are encouraging their new store employees to commit to participate in the Silver Lake Service Day on October 13. Other businesses have pledged materials and know-how to make the event a great success. A kick-off service day is planned for 9:00 am on October 13, 2012. A list of projects has been created and a set of willing hands will meet the required volunteer needs to finish all of the projects on the list. Donations of materials needed to prepare Silver Lake for a grand re-opening are being solicited from area businesses.

committing a few hours of service on October 13 to help make Silver Lake the family destination it can easily become. Supervisor Pete Candland’s vision to organize the community and hold a service project at Silver Lake Park to transform it into a community park where families can truly enjoy nature, hold picnics, hike the trails in the Park, and enjoy natural beauty of this secluded spot is coming together nicely. Families are invited to join fellow citizens in putting a little elbow grease into “spiffing” up Silver Lake Park. The Service Day will start at 9:00 am and go throughout the day until 4:00 pm. Families are invited to come anytime during the day for as long as they can to pitch in and participate in this great project. Food, water, and snacks will be provided for all the volunteers. There will be lake banks to clean, trails to mark, painting to be done, trees to cut, underbrush to be removed, and lots of small projects that will transform this Park into a quality family destination.

The Results Silver Lake Park is a natural jewel with fishing, hiking, picnic areas, and miles of nature trails that highlight the beauty of the land. As the community grows and lives become busier, families need a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet.

The Coalition seeks the active participation of corporations and community leaders in making this event a great success for the community, but the most important component for success will be families

The work of the Silver Lake Revitalization Coalition is to support the citizens of the Gainesville District to empower themselves in creating a quality park that will be a valuable resource for the future. It is a project that will create opportunities for quality family experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime.

History

a continuing labor of love By John T. Toler

Only a small number of 18th and 19th century homes still exist in the Haymarket area. Some historic houses, like Meadow Farm, The Shelter, Snow Hill and Waverly are gone forever; others like Mount Atlas still stand, but are being allowed to quietly deteriorate. Still others, like Evergreen, are being saved, and will eventually be reused for a new purpose. One of the oldest homes in the area that has been preserved – and in continuous use as a private residence – is Stepney, on present-day Stepney Drive north of Haymarket. It is currently owned by Ms. Elizabeth A. Cross. The oldest part of Stepney dates from 1774, and now makes what is the rear section of the house. The front of the house consists of a two-story addition built in the early 20th century. The property also features restored outbuildings, including a smokehouse, stone kitchen and carriage house. Like many historic homes in the area, the property that made up the original Stepney Plantation was part of a huge land grant patented by Robert “King” Carter, a land agent for Lord Fairfax. Carter patented the 41,660-acre Bull Run tract in 1724 in the names of two of his sons and five of his grandsons, including Lewis Burwell (1710-1752). Lewis Burwell received his patent – 1/7 of the Bull Run Tract, which included the land that became Stepney Plantation – when he was only 14 years old. The land was

further divided when his son, also named Lewis Burwell (1737-1779) inherited the property, which he sold in separate tracts to Mathew Whiting of Gloucester County, Va. Mathew Whiting was living on this land as early as 1770, and the origins of Stepney Plantation itself can be traced to 1774. The name “Stepney” was derived from an old English village that was later absorbed by the City of London. From there, ownership of the land can be traced over the next 200 years through the Whiting (1774-1811), Brooke (1811-1826), Lewis (1826-1871), and Smith families (18711974). Over the years, those buried in the family cemetery included Rev. John Toliver Lewis (1785-1862), his wife Fannie Tasker Ball Lewis (1792-1853) and son Francis W. Lewis (18221913); also Elizabeth Lewis Bower (1811-1881), Charles Stuart Lewis (1869-1903), and several others. In 1909, Francis W. Lewis ordered that none of the property could be sold or divided “…until a substantial iron fence is first erected around the family graveyard at Stepney, and a stone marked with the inscription, ‘The Lewis Family Cemetery.’” The last burial there took place in 1938. The 1938 Works Progress Administration (WPA) survey describes the setting of the house as “…charming, with fine old trees and a beautiful garden to the south of the house.”

Haymarket Lifestyle

Stepney survives as a comfortable home, registered historic site

The report further notes that the addition on the new front of the house “…takes away the appearance of age,” and describes the stand-alone stone kitchen, smoke house and other outbuildings. At the time, Stepney was filled with antiques handed down from generations of the families that lived there, and old portraits of family members. It was noted that the sword carried by Bernard Carter Smith’s father at the execution of Abolitionist John Brown once hung on the wall in the hallway.

Recent Ownership By 1974, the property consisted of 188 acres. It was purchased by Stepney Plantation Inc., a development firm with offices on Shelter Lane, and divided into lots that were sold for the construction of new homes. When John K. and Judith A. Axel acquired Stepney in 1983, the house had been vacant for some time. It was in very poor condition, with missing windows, peeling paint and rotting trim. Much work had to be done before the house was livable. The results were described in “Lewises of Portici on Bull Run,” written by Alice Jean Nelson: “John and Judy Axel have beautifully restored the old home… lavishing a great deal of artistic talent, love and hard work on the project. They have subtly and

unobtrusively incorporated modern conveniences into the home while maintaining the original design and character. The original fireplaces had been plastered over, and these are now uncovered, revealing in some places the original stone. Finding samples of the ornamental scrollwork from the porches, they have had new ones milled in the same design.” In 1984, the Axels divided their 10-acre tract into three parcels, with the house and outbuildings on four acres, and the two other tracts sold as building lots. Stepney was sold again in 1993 to Marion M. and Linda M. Cloud, who held onto the property until 2000, when Matthew A. and Elizabeth A. Cross Hoy purchased it. Ms. Cross has had sole ownership of Stepney since 2008. As a result of the surrounding development, the setting of Stepney has changed. The main road through the area was re-routed behind the old house, so that now it faces the back of the new houses. The subdivision road also separated Stepney from the old family graveyard, which was sold as part of another lot. In reaction to threat that Stepney was going to be developed, in the 1960s descendants of the Lewis family had 19 of the gravestones moved to the Sudley United stepney continued on page 20

Methodist Church Cemetery on Rte. 234; however, the remains were not. Today, they rest in unmarked graves inside the old iron fence.

Committed to Stepney If Stepney needed a conservator and advocate, the current owner, Elizabeth A. Cross, came along at the right time. “You cannot match the appeal of an old house, and I intentionally sought out old homes while trying to find our first house,” said Ms. Cross, a native of Norfolk who grew up in old homes there. “I found Stepney using the search engine, Realtor.com.” Ms. Cross first looked at older homes for sale in Arlington, as well as a small farmhouse in Clifton, “But for the price, Stepney could not be beat in terms of the combination of ‘old’ character and lots of land,” she added. “Stepney just charmed me to death!” Of particular appeal were the stone chimneys with doubledecker fireplaces, the high ceilings, original spiral staircase, pink claw-foot bathtub and heart pine floors. Added to that were the outbuildings, including the smokehouse and a stone structure that once served as a detached kitchen. They closed on the house in April 2000. Stepney was in good shape when they moved in, with all the modern amenities and a good heating and air conditioning system. The goal quickly became bringing the property back to the way it appeared in the 19th century. “My first project was very basic – painting the walls white in every room, and changing the trim colors using historical colors from companies like Olde Village Paints,” she recalls. “Other projects included building a flagstone walkway, putting two sets of barn doors on the barn/carriage house, replacing siding on the smokehouse, and building board-andbatten doors for the old stone kitchen and smokehouse.”

The old smokehouse at Stepney currently serves as Ms. Cross’s garden shed.

Making the improvements authentic involved several trips to Williamsburg to study construction details and 18th century smokehouse design, and traveling to antique shops in Pennsylvania to find correct strap hinges for the doors on the outbuildings. “I would say the style is ‘primitive country farmhouse’ with a little bit of country store,” said Ms. Cross. As work continued inside the house, other projects were completed, including renovation of the bathrooms (re-using or refinishing the old fixtures), and uncovering the old beams around the fireplace and in the ceiling of the breakfast room. Modern flooring in the main living areas was replaced with random-width wide pine boards, and creating a textured plaster look on the walls in the living room, kitchen and breakfast areas by applying spackle over the drywall. About halfway through the renovations, the couple divorced. Ms. Cross was determined not to lose Stepney as a result, but it would not be easy. “Many things had to fall into place for me to be successful owning Stepney outright,” she reflected. “It involved getting two promotions at work (she is currently Contract Specialist with the Department of Defense) in order to qualify for a loan in my own name, as well as reaching an agreement with my ex-spouse on a fair market value to buy him out.” In addition, she had to be prepared to take on the physical upkeep of the property by herself. “I can do carpentry, drywall and interior and exterior painting, but I stay away from plumbing and electrical,” she said. “And mowing the lawn takes me about two hours a week.” Ms. Cross has taken on some small, enjoyable projects like painting a Betsy Ross flag on the back the carriage house, and using stencils to paint a floor cloth in an upstairs hall, replicating the historic Bump Tavern pattern. Her most challenging – and expensive – project so far has been the kitchen, completed in 2005. “It’s ironic, because

The back of Stepney’s carriage house has been decorated with a ‘Betsy Ross flag’ painted by Ms. Cross. 20

when you look at it, you can’t see anything modern about it,” she said. But that’s the point. Ms. Cross wanted it to look like it did in the 1800s. “I hid all of the appliances, making the refrigerator look like an old pie safe, hid the microwave in a step back cupboard, hid the oven behind closed doors, and the cook top under a slab of wood from a historic old factory in Georgia,” she explained. “The dishwasher is behind a wooden panel that makes it look like an old ‘meal and flour bin,’ and the kitchen sink looks like an old soapstone dry sink.” During the months it took to bring the kitchen back to the 19th century, Ms. Cross had to heat food on a hibachi grill on the screened porch. “It was stressful being without a kitchen, because the kitchen is literally the heart of the house,” she added. “But it was all worth it in the end.”

Efforts are Recognized Although she didn’t actively seek it, Ms. Cross has received important recognition for what she has done with Stepney. In May 2009, Stepney was added to the list of Prince William County Registered Historic sites. John Lassiter of the Prince William County Planning Department did the preliminary research on the property and contacted In 2009, Stepney was designated a Ms. Cross. “Mr. Lassiter Prince William County Registered mentioned the historic Historical Site, as this plaque near register, and told me to the back door of the house attests. write a letter requesting consideration,” she said. “He worked on writing up some of the history, and then gave it to me for editing.” Stepney was described as “…a rare example of an agrarian farmstead with a number of original outbuildings, including a smokehouse, a carriage house and a root cellar.” What resulted was a revision to the Cultural Resources Chapter of the 2008 Comprehensive plan, adding Stepney and some other properties to the list of County Registered Historic Sites. The measure passed the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors, and Stepney was added to the CRHS list, and a re-map of the long-range land use designation. In 2009, Ms. Cross was given the plaque for Stepney by Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart affirming the designation. Stepney should also qualify for inclusion in the state registry. “I have the paperwork to fill out for the Virginia State Historical Commission, but I have not gotten around to filling it out,” said Ms. Cross. 22

A two-story, Victorian-style addition built about a century ago during the Smith family ownership gave Stepney a new front, a large porch, and several more rooms. The current owner, Ms. Elizabeth Cross, recently had the whole house repainted.

Earlier this year, Stepney earned an unexpected honor – being selected as one of the twelve homes featured in the “Special Home Tour Edition” of Country Sampler magazine. “I have a friend who lives nearby who is an antique dealer, and she delivered an antique piece to my house,” recalled Ms. Cross. “She saw Stepney, and told me that she knew some freelance photographers who would love to photograph my home for one of the major country decorating magazines. The rest is history.” The photographs were taken by Franklin Smith, with his wife Esther serving as the stylist. Nancy Anderson Hedberg wrote the narrative. In the article entitled, “Step by Stepney,” Ms. Hedberg noted, “Elizabeth has an unerring eye for period detail,” and “With its timeworn charm and recent improvements, the stately old house practically begs to be filled with antiques, and Elizabeth is happy to oblige.”

What about the Future? “I see another ten years in the house, but it is a lot of work, good work,” said Ms. Cross, who just last month had the exterior of the house repainted. “I figure that once I am finished with all my renovation projects, that is when I’ll be done with Stepney. If there isn’t a project to do, I would be bored, for sure.”

Yellow Nutsedge I have seen more Yellow Nutsedge this year in lawns and gardens than I ever have before. I suspected that it is because of our mild winter and warm spring. After a little research I found that to be true. Nutsedge is a warm season perennial plant. As the soil warms up, the tubers and seeds from the previous year germinate. Usually this is late spring to early summer but with this year’s mild conditions Nutsedge got an early start. It thrives in warm wet conditions making all of the lawns and gardens with sprinkler systems prime targets. Because it is a fast grower, taller and lighter green than turfgrass, it is very obvious and unsightly in lawns and gardens. The best defense is to spot it early and pull the plants when they are young. This usually leaves little root pieces that will regenerate but with diligence the patch can be eliminated. An area of Nutsedge this time of year is thriving and needs more than handpulling. Because it is a Sedge it will not respond to the usual broadleaf weed killer. I have tried Round Up and I was disappointed with the results. I found Sedgehammer and that did the job but only after 4 heavy applications. The label directions are for application on lawns and no mention is made of flowerbeds. I used it in a bed of Liriope with no damage to those plants. However, I would suggest putting a shield of some kind around flowers and shrubs when you spray to minimize contact with them. It is important to get on top of this invasive weed as soon as possible because next year it will have increased in area and quantity. Life-Saving Screening

why there’s never been a better time than now for your

mammogram October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and amid the flurry of pink products and charity events, Prince William Hospital and Heathcote Health Center would like to remind women of the critical importance of screening mammograms. “Screening mammography is essential for early detection of breast cancer,” explains Maria Pace, MD, chairman of radiology at Prince William Health System. “Nearly 70 percent of women who are diagnosed have no known risk factors. Screening mammography, recommended annually starting at age 40 or younger if you are at high risk, is the best tool we have for early detection.”

Faster screening, accurate treatment, people you trust Technological advances have streamlined the process – the biggest improvement being the transition from film-screen mammography to digital mammography, Dr. Pace says. “Fullfield digital mammography is acquired electronically and stored on computers, so the images are available immediately 32

and there is no wait time to view the images,” she explains. Electronic transmission of digital mammography means screenings are obtained faster and images can be stored, retrieved and transmitted quickly to the radiologists for review. Also, the radiation dose is lower, Dr. Pace says. Additionally, computeraided detection software can highlight potential areas of abnormality. “Digital mammography offered at both Prince William and Heathcote is shown to be significantly better at detecting cancers in women under age 50 or women of any age with dense breasts,” Dr. Pace adds. For patients who need more than a screening mammogram, Prince William Health System has the latest advances in diagnostic screenings and treatment options. Prince William Hospital offers magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast and MRIguided breast biopsy can be performed for certain abnormalities not seen on mammography or ultrasound. “MRI provides high-resolution images that can be used to problem-solve, assess

Maria Pace, MD women who are at high risk for breast cancer or to gauge treatment response in patients who have already been diagnosed,” Dr. Pace says. A PET/CT (positron emission tomography/computed tomography) scan hybrid also is available at The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas and mammogram continued on page 32

UPCOMING EVENTS Ladies’ Night Out

Grab friends and family for Prince William Health System’s Ladies’ Night Out, an evening of fun activities and screening mammograms to celebrate breast cancer awareness month. Monday, Oct. 1, 6 to 8 p.m. Heathcote Health Center 15195 Heathcote Blvd, Haymarket Maria Pace, MD, will be in attendance!

can monitor treatment progress and search for diffuse or distant cancer cells throughout the body. “It is state-ofthe-art technology,” Dr. Pace says. Additionally, The Cancer Center at Lake Manasssas offers revolutionary breast brachytherapy as an alternative to standard external beam radiation therapy in some patients who are candidates for breast conservation. This technique focuses the radiation source directly on the cancer site, decreasing the overall radiation dose to surrounding healthy tissue and potentially decreasing treatment time. Beyond the latest technology, what really sets Prince William Health System apart is the people, Dr. Pace says. “It’s not just the doctors, either. From the technologists and mammographers to the patient navigators and nurses, everyone who deals with our patients has a goal to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care – from early detection and planning treatment all the way out to survivorship,” she explains. “We have the highest level of

34

expertise in this field.” Interdisciplinary tumor boards meet monthly, pulling experts from every field to discuss patient cases as a team. “We all work cohesively to figure out the best care plan,” Dr. Pace explains. “I can speak from experience not only from working here, but my mother came here for all of her care when she was diagnosed two years ago. I was completely confident in her management and treatment. She is a survivor today.” She adds, “I would not have recommended my mother come here if I didn’t know firsthand what goes on behind the scenes. People here truly are very caring in what can be difficult situations.”

Combating fear with a welcoming environment Dr. Pace admits that fear of the unknown is a big factor in deterring women from having annual screening mammograms. “We try to create a warm, welcoming and caring environment to combat that fear,” she says. “Particularly at our Haymarket

location, where we have separate waiting rooms for women, warm robes for patients and private consultation rooms. It has more of a spa feel to it. We are currently renovating the facilities at the Manassas campus to reflect more of the same. It helps alleviate some of the fear of what can be a stressful situation.” Dr. Pace also concedes that more American women are uninsured or underinsured than in the past, and screening mammograms are just another medical need that is going unmet in these hard economic times. She adds that conflicting media reports about the value and frequency of regular screening mammography has led some women to skip getting screened. “All the big players – the American College of Radiology, American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and others – still firmly believe what we’ve been recommending all along: screening for women 40 and older and possibly earlier for those at high risk, including

a first-degree family history of the disease.” Self-exam is also an important piece that Dr. Pace recommends patients practice routinely.

The high-quality care difference

To learn more about Virginia Radiology Associates, The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas and Dr. Pace, visit www.VirginiaRadiology.com or www. CancerCenterLM.org. Visit www.pwhs. org for more information about Prince William Hospital and Heathcote Health Center.

Dr. Pace recommends being screened at an American College of Radiology (ACR)-accredited facility. “Our facilities are fully accredited by the ACR in breast MRI, digital mammography, ultrasound and PET,” she says. “It’s important to know you are receiving consistent high-quality care and that everyone involved is well qualified and practicing with a caring attitude at every step.” She adds, “For me, my family and my closest friends, Prince William and Heathcote really offer unrivaled care throughout the entire process. I wouldn’t have sent my mother anywhere else.”

Gray Ghost Gewürztraminer The Taste: This aromatic Gewurztraminer exhibits a bright bouquet of pineapple, ginger and jasmine with the classic spicy finish. Superbly balanced with a hint of sweetness. This wine complements a wide range of cuisine including turkey, fresh fruit, baked ham and spicy Asian dishes. We are recommending this superb wine to compliment your Thanksgiving dinner this year.

The Vineyard: A family owned and operated winery, Gray Ghost Vineyards is the dream-turned-reality for Al and Cheryl Kellert. A chemistry major in college, Al was first introduced to winemaking by a college professor who assisted him in his first fermentation experiment in 1969. Not long after, he met and married Cheryl, and a career transfer landed them in Virginia amidst the beginning of what would soon become the burgeoning wine industry in the state. From the beginning, the Kellerts focus has been on producing the highest quality wines possible. And the results are evident. Gray Ghost wines are produced by using the gentlest care possible beginning in the vineyard and through the winemaking process. Every vine is personally pruned by Cheryl and every bottle that leaves the winery has been touched by Al in the winemaking and packaging process.

The Reviews: "A highly aromatic wine with notes of tropical flowers and fruit, it delivers a spicy finish that is tailor made for Cajun food. If at a loss as to what to serve with Thanksgiving turkey then consider Gray Ghost’s Gewurztraminer." - Virginia Wine Time Blog
