Building Community through Virtual Book Clubs BY JEANINE RAGHUNATHAN

ook clubs have always been a popular way to bring people together and at the Prince William Public Library System, our book clubs help build a sense of community for people of all ages and interests. Book clubs take a socially isolating activity and make it a social event that builds a community of people with an interest in reading. Virtual book clubs have been around for a while, but they have coexisted with in-person book clubs, not taken their place. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our libraries have had to reimagine offering programs like book clubs. PWPLS has always offered many book clubs, but because all library programming will be virtual through November, many existing and some new book clubs are now also virtual. All these book clubs will meet via WebEx, providing a safe environment while still offering the same benefits of meeting and discussing from your home. Here are the August virtual book clubs and dates/times PWPLS is offering via WebEx:

You can read or listen to the book through the hoopla Digital app on your phone, tablet, or browser without placing a hold or waiting for the book to be available. The Books on Tap programs at Tucked Away Brewing Co. and Sinistral Brewing Co. are currently using hoopla Digital titles for monthly discussions. It has been very successful and made continuing this program possible in a virtual environment when libraries and breweries were closed. a single striking accent makes a confident statement and is much easier to make work than balancing multiple items all vying for attention. Select the quality piece and don’t make it compete with anything. There are no two colors that cannot work together. Only when we start introducing third and fourth colors do we really start to get in trouble. Similarly, patterns can read as color, so limit the use of chevrons or other “noise.” PRO TIP

WHICH PIECES DO I SELECT FIRST? Typically people want to start with selecting paint, but this is actually one of the last things to pick. We can mix any color paint you want, so we can always get a color that works. When determining where to start, always begin with the items

you have the fewest choices in. Only one sofa will work? Then that is where we start. Expand out through all the options from fewest to most plentiful. At the end, the shade of paint you need to complete the room is only one custom mix away. PRO TIP

Consider the function of the room first; function trumps ornament.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT PAINT COLOR TO SELECT? The way in which professional designers select is based on being able to actually see what the color is. Aside from color acuity based on genetics, understanding what a color really looks like is greatly aided by separating it from other colors when you judge it. Much like smelling coffee beans between sampling scents, we border our samples in white so that we have an untainted view of the shade and its undertones. PRO TIP

Colors are going to look different based on the quality of the light you

see them in. Always make sure to check the color in the actual space where it is going to be applied, and consider the lighting conditions that will be most prevalent during the time you will be occupying the space.

I KNOW WHAT COLOR PAINT I WANT. DOES THE BRAND MATTER? While different brands of paint are not all created equal, you need to remember that even within a single brand the characteristics of the paint vary tremendously. We love the cleanability of higher sheen paints, but they require that your walls are in better condition. Don’t forget about humidity, wear, the chemicals that are used to clean it... With so many things to consider, do what we do, ask. There is no shame in asking the expert at the paint store what the best option is for your situation. Plus you’ll save both time and money. The smell of new paint is actually volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) being released into the space, and they are in no way good for you. If you don’t have the ability or time to ventilate the space, consider asking about a low or ideally no VOC paint. (And iIf you really want to learn about something special, drop us an email and we’ll tell you about negative VOC paint!) PRO TIP

NOW THAT THE WALLS ARE PAINTED, HOW DO I PUT MY ARTWORK BACK UP? You can contact your local framer and either they can hang it for you or recommend an installer who can. If you want to DIY it, using a laser to mark a line on the wall doesn’t risk leaving any marks, unlike a pencil or the metal end of a tape measure which can scuff the wall as it retracts. Make sure to make the top level with any horizontal line that your eye will be drawn to, typically the ceiling or crown. It doesn’t matter if all of your pieces are perfectly level if the ceiling is not and they all look off. The same principle applies to sloped ceilings or stairs. PRO TIP

When and why did you decide to start your own company? Our family decided to start MurLarkey when we realized a few important things: we had the skill set within the family to develop the product line and run operations, we were able to make great tasting small-batch booze that could scale, and we were ready for the adventure.

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? Be enthusiastic about what you do. Build a strong team and welcome diverse input. Work harder than anyone you know. Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? Our family has lived in the area now for 20 years. Originally, we were from New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. We moved down for jobs in the high-tech and golf industries and are glad we did! The weather is much better and the people and local scene are great.

Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? We’ve been involved with both Toys for Tots and Chesapeake Bay Foundation for several years each. Corporate social responsibility is part of running a good quality company and beyond that, we grew up doing community service through our church and school so it is just part of how we live. Two of our founders were professional hockey players so they probably hold the distinction for most interesting prior careers!

SHE’S NO QUITTER — Meet author Kristina Kotlus

ristina Kotlus had a unique response to her second battle with brain cancer. She waved her white flag and said, “I quit.” But wait; it isn’t quite what you think. Quitting in the traditional sense means giving up, and Kotlus isn’t one to give up. What she chose to quit was fear, and what she chose to embrace was joy and faith even in the hardest of times. Kotlus was well known in the Manassas community, even before putting pen to paper to author her first book. Kotlus’ name has become synonymous with PWC Moms, a popular online resource that began in 2010 as a calendar of local events and morphed into business reviews and eventually became a whole identity for her, says Kotlus. “People will actually refer to me as PWCMoms Lady, which always makes me laugh.” In April of 2012, at the age of 28, Kotlus ran the Cherry Blossom 10-miler in Washington, D.C. It wasn’t long after that she began struggling with headaches. Over the next few months the pain intensified. On the urging of her husband, she visited the emergency room and was prescribed medication for migraines. The next day she woke up on the floor while home alone with her children, who at the time were ages nine, six, and four. Another fainting spell five months later, all the while enduring increasingly horrible pain, had Kotlus convinced that her brain was “rotting away.” After an MRI, Kotlus received the call we all dread. In the waiting room at Georgetown University Hospital, she and her husband played a game of ‘guess the diagnosis’ via text message to distract themselves. Kotlus was immediately admitted to the neurology unit, more MRIs were done, and, long story short, it was decided surgery would give her the best shot at survival. The 16-hour marathon surgery and ensuing recovery included postoperative neuropathy, physical therapy, traveling four hours each way for radiation treatment, unbearable discussions with the kids,

help from family and friends, anger, frustration, depression, and just about everything in between. “I don’t think there has ever been a better husband in the history of the world because as my thoughts became clearer and less foggy, I explained to my sweet, agnostic Jewish husband that we were going to take 24 hours to be sad and angry and then we were going to trust God and have faith.”

After a while, the family settled into their ‘new normal’ as most survivors of trauma can understand. Kotlus returned to homeschooling their three children, taught classes in a few homeschool co-ops, volunteered at church, and ran her Prince William County Moms business. She also got back to running and devoured any book she could find. Kotlus says that during this first recovery she attempted to write but could not seem to find the voice for it. “I think it was because my story wasn’t finished yet.” Time went on and the fear of recurrence began to move into the back of her mind. Sadly, a few months after running a halfmarathon, with pain plaguing her lower back, a routine MRI revealed that her tumor had metastasized to her spine. “With my first diagnosis, I went quickly to a place of faith and peace. With this diagnosis, I went to fear and depression.” After another painfully honest discussion with her children, more MRIs, and more radiation, recovery round two began. Full spine radiation was difficult but with what she learned from the first time, she took it easy, gave herself more grace, and took things as they came. While she couldn’t find the voice after recovery number one, recovery number two was a completely different story. The book was written on her heart before she even put pen to paper, says Kotlus. “I know that my book is, on the surface, about brain cancer. But really, if you are struggling with fear or the unknown, I wrote it for you,” she says. “I want people to know they can refuse fear and choose joy, no matter what their circumstances are.” I Quit. Facing Cancer with Faith, Family, and Friends (And Sarcasm. There’s a lot of that, too.) pulls the reader in from the first line: “I keep thinking I’ve heard the worst words in the English language.” From there, Kotlus takes us through her journey, detailing the good and the bad with her personal thoughts and guidance interspersed. But it’s the way Kotlus explains what happened that comes off as a friend advising you of what to do and what not to do when approaching a similar situation. For example, Kotlus and her husband Austin were taken aback when their children were approached by well-intentioned adults asking them for information about their mother’s treatment. Determined to empower their children to be “self-protecting,” they instructed the kids to refuse to answer questions that made them uncomfortable and walk away. Additionally, an entire section of the book is

designed to teach you, as a patient, how to turn your friends into professionals and what three kinds of friends you need to surround yourself with. The Experienced Advocate is your subject matter expert and holds no fear of medical issues and big words. The Professional Organizer will take over your family and Kotlus urges you to say yes to this person. Meals, playdates, rides… whatever your family needs in your absence will be taken care of by this friend. Your third friend is The Village, which includes everyone else. These people include close friends but also people around the globe who will pray for you and surround you with love throughout treatment and beyond. Kotlus says she felt “terrified” when the book was released, realizing she had taken a “very raw, honest part of myself and put it out into the world.” Her husband read it cover to cover and is maybe the one person who is more excited than Kotlus when someone responds to it. But the kids… they each asked to read it, read one chapter, and handed it back to her in tears. Their mom knows they aren’t ready to revisit these painful times just yet. But Kotlus isn’t finished writing. A manuscript for a second book is in development, with a focus on helping others to know they are enough just as they are. From all her hardships, she’s grown a passion for speaking to people and encouraging them, and would take that as a full-time job in a heartbeat. THE ENTRYWAY Entryways can take on many different forms depending on the layout of your home, but whether it’s a mudroom or a small table by the front door, it is the main entry and exit of your home and an easy target for clutter. Make note of all the items that enter and leave your home and stay by the door (like mail, shoes, jackets, backpacks, etc.) and create solutions for each of those items. For instance, a row of hooks for jackets, a lower row for purses and backpacks, decorative floor baskets for shoes, and a mail sorter is usually all you need to keep things contained and clutter-free.

family, the key is to set up systems that follow your own flow. Systems that work for your friends, or for the people on Pinterest, may not work well for your family at all. For instance, decanting dry goods, like flour and noodles, into beautiful canisters looks so polished and clean. However, filling up each jar after every trip to the store takes time and doesn’t necessarily fit into everyone’s lifestyle. Storing food groupings in their own containers, like labeled baskets or clear bins, can be just as beautiful and functional. Do what works for you. Start by taking a look at your home, and create a system for spots where the clutter happens naturally. Does mail pile up on the kitchen counter? Incorporate a mail sorter there or closeby. Do kids’ shoes get piled near the door? Add a floor basket for each family member to contain the chaos. Label the baskets to encourage everyone to maintain their own things. You can use decorative baskets in visible places, and plastic storage bins for locations that are not as visible. Using whatever containers you have on hand first is definitely very sensible, but, on the other hand, having the same style and color container used throughout makes everything look super tidy

and beautiful. So keep that in mind when envisioning your finished space, and create a home that works for you.

THE PROCESS No matter the room you are organizing, the process is going to remain the same: • Take everything out • Group everything into general categories (pantry example: baking, cooking, snacks, beverages, etc.) • Edit items (sort them to keep, donate, or toss) • Reset the space with your newly contained and labeled categories

The kitchen is where we spend so much of our time, and it can very easily become cluttered and disorganized as you try to stack pots, pans, glasses, and coffee mugs on top of each other. The key is to make the most out of each bit of space while keeping the things you use most often readily available. After all, you want your kitchen to be efficient enough to actually cook in. Add some shelf risers to make use of your cabinets’ vertical space when stacking variously sized dishes. Nesting pots, pans, and lids can make preparing meals a twisted game of Jenga; opt for some upright dividers to give each item its own place. Storing lids on over-the-cabinet door racks helps make great use of every available space. When tackling the pantry, take everything out and sort into categories (breakfast, snacks, beverages, cooking, baking, etc.), toss out anything expired, and consider donating goods that are not expired but you know you will not use. Unpack as many items from their packaging as you can (like taking individually wrapped granola bars out of their boxes) and organize all similar items, like snacks, together for grab-and-go simplicity. Put it all back in using turntables, bins, and baskets to help contain your categories, and don’t forget to add labels.

THE MASTER CLOSET This is a great time to take stock of all the items in your wardrobe. Does it fit? Do you like it? Have you worn it in the last year? If the answer is no, then strongly consider letting it go. Keep a separate laundry basket in your closet for donation items that turn up — then they won’t end up back in the rotation and take up valuable closet space.

Almost every closet I’ve walked into has a mix of several different style hangers (wire, plastic, wood, old dry cleaning hangers). One way to make a big impact in your closet fast is by using one style hanger for everything. I love the slim, velvet hangers and use them in almost every organizing project. Their thin design means more hanging space for all your clothing, and with the velvety covering your blouses won’t be constantly slipping to the floor. Create order fast by grouping similar items together. All dresses together, tops, bottoms, accessories. Then take it a step further by grouping items within each category by length (short sleeve/long sleeve, shorts/ skirts/pants, maxi/mini dresses). Finally, give one last sort by color for that professional touch. The same sorting approach can be taken with shoes and jewelry.

But using our guideline of organizing (pull everything out, group into categories, edit, then reassemble the newly grouped items back into the space) will create quick calm out of the chaos. When it comes to skincare and makeup that is used daily, it is okay to keep them on the bathroom counter or drawer (each in their own labeled bins of course!) but items not used daily can be stored in their own labeled containers under the sink or in your linen closet. Beauty products have a shelf life, you’re going to want to be ruthless about tossing out old products. When they are old and expired they won’t work as effectively and can also carry bacteria (yikes!), and this is a great time to sort them out.

THE LAUNDRY ROOM Because laundry rooms often hold household cleaning supplies as well, it is even more important to have a containment system set up here. (Ever reach for one bottle of cleaner and knock over dozens of bottles instead?) Pull everything out and sort into categories (like detergents, spot treatments, and types of household cleaners) and toss anything expired or empty. When you are reassembling the room, open plastic bins with handles are great to contain each category of items. Just add a label to make finding and returning items a breeze for everyone. A game-changer product I’ve brought to many projects is a four-section laundry hamper. Sort your lights, darks, delicates, and dry cleaning instantly. They also come on wheels, making moving from bedroom to laundry room effortless.

Getting in the habit of putting things in their correct spot immediately is always best, but sometimes the fast pace of daily life prevents that from always happening. Incorporating an “action” bin or basket can be a sanity saver by holding all the items that need taking care of in one spot. Label a basket for each family member, and pick a day that everyone empties and puts away their own things.

MONTHLY MAINTENANCE The secret to maintaining your organized spaces year-round is by looking ahead to any upcoming holidays, events, and seasons. If your child has a birthday next month, now would be a great time to take stock of their clothing and toys they’ve outgrown to make room for the new things that will be coming in. Small tasks done every day will help keep your space looking tidy, but when you also look ahead to what is coming you prevent the tasks from piling up and becoming overwhelming. ❖

n the past few months, Marie Kondo has been everywhere. The Japanese organizing expert has written four best-selling books and has a hit show on Netflix — all focused on tidying up your home and other spaces and bringing some peace and balance to your life. Her method and tips — known by the name KonMari — involve identifying items that bring you joy and getting rid of just about everything else. I read everything I could find about how to KonMari the heck out of the shelves and drawers and hangers in our master closet. From sparking joy to folding clothes into teeny, tiny rectangles, and repeating the mantra “clothing, books, paper, komono, sentimental.” Did you know “komono” more or less means “miscellaneous” in Japanese? I didn’t. Here are five things I learned while transforming our closet.

Folding clothes in tiny packages is fun. Laundry is the bane of my existence. I don’t like it and it doesn’t like me. However, our relationship may be turning a corner. I genuinely like folding the clothes the way Marie suggests. It’s cute in the same way that tiny bottles of ketchup make your heart skip. It’s a laundry craft project! The whole family is making clothes origami. Perhaps laundry and I won’t need couples counseling after all. I want my socks to be happy! Marie says that our possessions spark joy through their energy and the way they bring us comfort. In order to bring out the best of our things, we need to treat them with respect. My sweet little socks, who carry all the weight of the world, are much happier now that they are gently folded and stored neatly away. Thank you so much, ankle cut crew socks! You were real troupers today. Buy all the things…that bring you joy (and you can afford)! One of Marie’s lessons is to keep what you love with confidence. My daughter told me that she will never again buy something she’s not 100 percent sure about. It must be right or it’s not coming home with her. Even more importantly, she’s going to seize the day when she falls in love with an item. Brilliant idea! Why do we talk ourselves into things we don’t love and talk ourselves out of the things we do? Your closet can punch you in the face. My previous experience with getting dressed was so negative. “Nope. I don’t fit into that anymore.” “No, that is ugly.” “Where did that sin-of-the-devil shirt come from anyway?” By the time I settled on an outfit, I didn’t like anything — neither my clothes nor myself. Now I can go into my closet and know that what I pick out will fit and I will like it. It’s simply a matter of what is appropriate for the occasion. No more beating myself up through my wardrobe. Tidying up really is magical. Like most of us, I have a lot going on — an empire to build; teenagers, husband, and animals to look after; and TV shows to binge watch. There is too much to think about all day. I can’t put that much thought into menial tasks! I just need to be able to find my vegetable peeler. Having a place for everything and everything in its place allows me to only focus on what’s important – like the next Netflix series. ❖

he 12th century French philosopher Bernard of Chartres is largely credited for the saying, dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants; an allusion to the belief that when one (modern) is carried aloft and elevated by the magnitude of those who’ve come before us (ancients), they are able to see more and reach farther. It was with this spirit that college friends (and whiskey buddies) Birk O’Halloran and Karl Antle created their label, Iconic Wines. To this day, a near decade into their adventure, their core mission remains intact: make wine we want to drink. Balance, focus and complexity, as any winemaker will tell you, is an achievement in and of itself, and Iconic Wines delivers. California born and Colorado raised, winemaker O’Halloran attended Cornell University’s Hotel Program, where wine went from a subject of study to his career choice. He continued his studies at the International Wine Guild and landed his first wine gig, actually breaking ground to help build three wines shops for various owners. That sweat equity would lead him to a small import company called Acid Inc., where he spent eight years transforming the outfit into a national operation. Throughout his travels, he built an astonishing network of wine industry mentors and wine grape growers…this would lay the foundation for Iconic. As for his winemaking philosophy, O’Halloran sees it more as a patchwork of philosophies borrowed from all the winemakers he has had the pleasure of working with over the years, including both Californian and European mentors. His goal always is to produce a delicious finished wine over any single, strict winemaking philosophy. To that point, they chose the name Iconic for their winery to aspire and establish a new benchmark for California wine. And as their palate would have it, Iconic Wines was founded on a love of Chardonnay. And they produce some great ones… Their first vintage was 90 cases of Chardonnay in neutral oak barrels, and was named Heroine to capture its grace and elegance, while still reflecting the powerful terroir of California. They put a true American art form – comic book art – on the label (more on this later); and when it sold out in six weeks, they knew they

had something beyond a pet project on their hands…it was time to go all in and get real. The Hero Series (chardonnay, zinfandel, pinot gris) was envisioned with one idea in mind, to make great wine. The Sidekick Series (chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, merlot) represents the finest wine they could create at everyday drinking value. About the wines… Since its debut in 2010, Heroine Chardonnay has been their defining wine. Like its predecessor, Heroine Chardonnay 2017 is sourced entirely from two blocks of the prestigious Escolle vineyard in the northern stretch of sunny Santa Lucia Highlands, which was planted in 2008. The vineyard retains a remarkable amount of acid

yet balanced by the concentration of the Santa Lucia sun. Both fermented and aged in neutral French oak, Heroine Chardonnay 2017 shows the remarkable range of the varietal; in one moment clean and crisp, the next moment round and full. Green and golden fruits anchor this wine, in both aromatics and palate. Approximately 400 cases were made. And priced under $30, it performs like a wine situated much higher up the ladder. As stated earlier, the Sidekick Series represents Iconic’s everyday drinking value wines. With fruit carefully selected from various vineyard sources throughout northern California, these wines, both chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, are indeed trustworthy in their pursuit of everyday reliability, offering freshness and fruit-driven satisfaction. Sidekick Chardonnay 2018 serves as the go-to white wine. Like Heroine, bright fruit and minerality are the combined focus. Stainless steel vinified, it’s fresh and lively, with a racy acidity and dazzle-the-senses finish. There’s an eagerness to this wine that sets the stage for the big sister. It’s priced around $18 and holds its own. Not to be outdone is the Sidekick Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. This particular wine is sourced from various sites in the Lodi California AVA, a wine region of great acclaim for its reds, particularly zinfandel and cabernet, as well as Anderson Valley fruit further north. Sidekick Cabernet 2017 is also fermented in several stainless steel vertical fermenters. After a maceration and pump-over phase to dryness, about a third of the wine is then aged in new French oak for a minimum of six months. Final blending is done a few weeks before bottling. The result? A rich bodied, red fruit focused wine that screams California greatness. There’s no jam or green vegetable characteristics getting in the way…just solid cabernet sauvignon purity that is sure to please, especially those seeking one under $20. With spring here, Iconic has its own rosé wine ready for the season. Secret Identity 2019 is a beautiful blend of seven red wine grapes. Of course, if I told you what they were, it wouldn’t be a secret. But Iconic will tell you that the name Secret Identity comes from the desire to make the best dry rosé for the buck they can, while not being trapped by tradition. For the record though, the wine is produced with fruit sourced from the Sierra Foothills, Clarksburg and Mendocino. The average vine age is over 20 years old, with a portion of the vines nearly 85 years in age. The beautiful color, enveloping aromatics and refreshing palate make this rosé a great choice for the sunny months ahead. And finally, as mentioned before, there’s Iconic Wines cool and oh-so-fitting labels. To capture (in label) the imagination, inspiration and excitement they have for their wines, Iconic turned to American comic book artist Cliff Chiang, whose artwork has been hailed for its fluidity, nuance and style; and with a resume of clients that include DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, GQ Magazine, Lucasfilm, Warner Animation, and the ACLU, his work speaks for itself.
