t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. And Hanukkah. And Kwanzaa. The lights are up, the shoppers are out and, unlike last year, many of us are eagerly awaiting celebrating in person with family and friends. For those of you hosting guests, don’t miss Essentials to Adorn a Holiday Grazing Table by Natalie Ortiz. Her recommendations on cheese boards, charcuterie, spreads and dips made my mouth water! Beyond the grand celebrations many of us are looking forward to, this time of year is also a good time to celebrate the small stuff. Our neighbors, for instance. People like Gabrielle Gaudreault and Chris LaRosa of Haymarket, and Travis and Carolyn Vernon of Bristow. Both couples are using their respective passions to bring joy — in the forms of music and wine — to our community. It’s also the perfect time to celebrate local heroes like Aiden Mobley and Anthony Aleman. The Haymarket teens came upon a young man having trouble paying for a toy at Target and jumped in, without a moment’s hesitation to help. Now those are some amazing kids. There’s so many people to celebrate in this issue and we’re honored to tell their stories. I hope you’ll make yourself a cup I hope you enjoyed last of hot cocoa and read them all. I also hope, month’s feature on Veterans from the bottom of my heart, that you Richard Eagan, Carlos and yours enjoy a holiday season of good Molina, and Aaron Roth. health, great food, and lots of fun. How to stay safe this holiday season

Y

et again, we find ourselves in another holiday season amid the COVID-19 pandemic questioning how to safely gather with friends and family. Although this year is accompanied by vaccines, many may still feel anxious about carrying on traditions with the potential winter surge and breakthrough infections. “It’s about finding the right balance. We don’t want to widen our circles too much and increase our risk of exposure, but isolating ourselves isn’t the answer either,” said Mina DeMarco, DO, a family medicine physician at UVA Bull Run Family Medicine Bristow. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that there are several ways to enjoy holiday traditions while protecting yourself and your family from respiratory illness. DeMarco dives into these recommendations and adds some of her own.

TRAVEL

The CDC recommends delaying travel until you are fully vaccinated. Even if you

6

{ DECEMBER 2021 |

are fully vaccinated, taking precautions while traveling significantly lowers risk of exposure. Driving your own car and making minimal stops along the way is the safest option, but that’s not always feasible. If you are fully vaccinated or have a need to travel via public transportation, it’s important to: • Wear a well-fitted mask over your mouth and nose when traveling on a plane, bus or train. • Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from anyone who is not traveling with you, if able. • Wash hands frequently when sinks are readily accessible. • Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. • Wipe down your area with a disinfecting wipe. “It’s also not a bad idea to change your clothes, wash your hands and face, and sanitize your bags when you arrive at your destination,” DeMarco added.

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

Whether you’re traveling or staying local, gatherings with anyone outside of your immediate household pose risks. However, there are steps we can take to make that much-anticipated, face-to-face time together as safe as possible. If you are not fully vaccinated, it is recommended you wear a mask when gathering indoors. Masks are not needed for outdoor gatherings; however, in areas of high transmission, consider wearing a mask in crowded settings where distancing can’t be maintained. “The cold winter months make it difficult to get together outdoors. But nothing beats gathering around a fire with warm blankets and cozy sweaters,” DeMarco said. “Hot chocolate and s’mores are always a good addition to family bonding.” It’s also important to keep the physical contact — hugging, handshakes, high fives — to a minimum and use your best judgment. If a friend or family member has an underlying health condition, has recently felt unwell or simply feels uncomfortable with touch, the best practice is to keep your distance.

DINING

“Everyone enjoys a family meal with the long table, place settings and food spread about. It’s perfectly fine to carry on this tradition if handled safely,” DeMarco noted. It is less safe to have close contact with people who are not vaccinated. It is important to encourage those who can get vaccinated to do so before the holidays. Wash your hands before preparing food, eating or drinking. Try to maintain distance during dinner. If you have a large family or gathering, consider setting up multiple tables with fewer people in each space. It is safer if the individuals who are attending are vaccinated. “None of us imagined we’d be facing another ‘COVID holiday,’ but it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy this season of cheer. We just have to do it safely,” DeMarco concluded. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, whether before or after traveling or spending time with others, self-isolate and contact your doctor or local pharmacy to schedule a test as quickly as possible.

usband and wife Chris LaRosa and Gabrielle Gaudreault of Haymarket have made beautiful music most of their lives. He, as a successful composer, and she as a highly-recognized conductor. “I come from a very musical family,” said Gabrielle. “Both of my parents are professional musicians as are my grandparents, so I was exposed to it from the beginning of my life. I started taking piano lessons when I was 5.” Chris was also about 5 years old when he started with piano. “I’m not from a very musical family like Gabrielle, but we did have some amateur poets in my family and my grandmother was a poet,” he said.

“When she saw I was doing something creative, she shared her poetry with me and asked me to set it to music one day. I was only 8 years old and the thought of writing my own music never crossed my mind.” At first, he only wrote for the piano, but later started branching out and wrote for voice and other instruments. At 18, he set his grandmother’s poetry to music. Gabrielle also expanded on her skills. “In addition to piano, I learned to play the flute, but pretty early on I had a strong desire to become a conductor,” she said. “My dad played in an orchestra and I went to a lot of symphony concerts. ideal in my mind.” When she was 17, she was introduced to choral music. “I just fell in love with it,” said Gabrielle. “The thing that’s really special about choral singing in particular is the human connection that comes with it.” Currently, the couple is involved with the choral ensemble Artifice in Washington, D.C.. “This group is specifically designed to work with living composers and create new works of choral music,” said Gabrielle. “I’m one of the choral conductors and Chris is one of the composers. It’s an awesome collaborative ensemble.” Over the last couple of years, Gabrielle has also travelled to Germany twice to be the assistant conductor at the Hamburg Symphony and Opera. “That was a really amazing experience,” she said. Gabrielle received a great honor this past July by making the 30 Under 30 list,

which celebrates the accomplishments of Canada’s emerging classical musicians. “I’m Canadian, from Montreal, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has this big article that is anticipated by musicians every summer,” she said. “The list contains selected artists from all across the country who get a short profile in the magazine. It was so wonderful to be recognized in my country.” Chris has also made quite a name for himself. In addition to being awarded multiple commissions and working with a variety of ensembles, including the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, he was one of only six winners of the 2018 Jinji Lake Composition Competition with the Suzhou Orchestra. He was invited to China to hear his piece and the other winning pieces performed live in concert. “It was one whole evening of new

music composed by living composers and that was really special to be a part of.” He has also been a staff arranger for the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” since 2019. “They have a concert band, an orchestra, a choir, a jazz band and chamber groups, so I get to write for the full gamut of ensembles,” said Chris. “That’s a blast because the band plays in places like the White House, the Pentagon, the United States Capitol, and at Arlington National Cemetery.” When he was offered the position, one of the criteria was to enlist in the Army! “I'm actually active-duty military and had to go to basic training. It’s a very unusual job that I never imagined myself in while growing up as a musician, but it’s a pretty neat way to serve my country.” The couple also founded CG Music Academy in Arlington in June of 2020 during

the height of COVID. “We wanted to provide a safe way to bring quality music education to kids in the area as well as to provide jobs for out-of-work musicians,” said Chris. “It’s been rewarding to watch the growth of the academy over the last year and a half,” said Gabrielle. “It’s been mainly word of mouth and personal recommendation which is very flattering. We went from 0 to 70 students in a year.” “We just had our first in-person recitals this summer and to see all of our virtual students gathering together in person was really neat,” said Chris. Today, CG Music Academy, which offers piano, voice, and composition lessons, as well as music theory, has a studio in Haymarket too, where the couple settled over a year ago. “So now, when we have in-person events, we have a Haymarket edition and an Arlington edition.”

Three local boys. boys One act of kindness. kindness BEING A GOOD HUMAN FOR THE WIN. As parents, we hope that when our kids are out in the world they act with thoughtfulness and kindness. Kari Mobley, of Piedmont in Haymarket, now knows her son Aiden does just that – but it wasn’t he who filled her in. Aiden, a 10th grader at Highland School in Warrenton, and his schoolmate Anthony Aleman, made a quick stop at the Gainesville Target in August, where they noticed something in the checkout line. “Anthony and I grabbed a drink and a snack, and we got in the shortest self-

He was a little short on money and he seemed very upset.” Aiden and Anthony watched the boy, Alex Fulda, his younger sister Lili, and their mother leave the store, and without hesitation agreed with each other to buy the figurine for him. “I asked the cashier how much, and we added it to our stuff,” Aiden said. “We were able to catch them just outside the doors.

I told him we saw he was upset that he didn’t have enough money for the toy, so my friend and I decided to buy it for him.” The boys handed Alex the item. “He seemed a little shocked -- he was like wait, what just happened,” said Aiden. His mother thanked them, sharing that she thought they were really nice kids. What Aiden and Anthony didn’t know was that Alex has high functioning autism, and sometimes when things don’t go as planned, the disruption can be upsetting. “Alex wanted to get this figure he collects,” said mom Samantha Fulda of Gainesville. “He thought the sign on the shelf stated the price, but it was not correct. He got to the register and didn’t have enough money.” The family is working on budgets and life skills, so Samantha let Alex know he could come back after his next allowance to make the purchase. “He went to a bench and sat down while I purchased some things for his sister, and It was all he could do to not cry,” Samantha said. “I noticed the two young men behind

As we left, I heard the boys say ‘Ma’am!’ as they walked up to Alex and said “Hey, we noticed you wanted this.’” Once the family got home, Alex wanted to let people know of the boys’ kind actions, so Samantha posted on Facebook via the Prince William Chatter and Highland School pages. “A bunch of people started texting, asking if that was me, and at first I didn’t know what they were talking about,” Aiden said. “The post mentioned that one of the teenagers was wearing a Highland Hawks 2024 tee shirt.” Kari searched for the post, and once she located it, messaged Samantha with a picture of Aiden in the shirt. “I asked her if this was the boy, and she confirmed that it was,” Kari said. “It was nice to hear from another mother and know

that, even when I am not around, my son is making good decisions. His father Anthony and I are very proud of him.” “I thought we were going to have this big life lesson on budgeting,” Samantha shared. “Instead, we had a big life lesson on being a good human, and how the small things can make a huge difference.” Alex told her he always thinks of kids his

He wants to be a friend and be happy.” “We complain about our teenage boys being compulsive – and in this case they were, but in a good way,” said Samantha. “They didn’t think about it and just did it – they were clearly being good kids. Manish Sood and his wife, Deepa Shahani, about whom he says, “There are a lot of people out there like me who may want to do this, but they have to have the vision, and the guts, and a wife like mine who stands behind me.”

hen Manish Sood of Haymarket arrived in the United States from India in 1997, he set about attaining the American Dream. He wanted to be successful in business and also be a part of his new community. After running his own travel agency, he realized with the advent of the Internet and the ability to book trips online, he’d better start developing a new business plan. “I knew I had to find something else,” said Manish. “I’m a people person, plus I like strategy.” One of these strategies involved giving out his travel business cards to artists’ managers when he attended Bollywood shows. Bollywood, for the uninitiated, is the Indian Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The term is a blend of the words "Bombay" and "Hollywood." One day, in 2011, Manish got a call from a touring manager with Shri Balaji Entertainment, who was handling Shankar Mahadevan, a singer from Bollywood. He said he couldn’t get in touch with the person managing the show in Washington D.C. and had a large group of people flying out that day. The touring manager was in a panic because he didn’t have a hotel booked or transportation arranged. When he found Manish’s business card and saw that he lived in Virginia, he asked him for help. However, the catch was that everything had to be

arranged within two hours! Manish took the challenge and within that short time arranged a bus and hotel and even went to the airport to meet Mahadevan and his band and crew. “It was all done so seamlessly that he [Mahadevan] never realized there was a problem,” said Manish. “The touring manager was so impressed that he told me he wanted to do more shows with me. When I talked to my wife Deepa about it, she said ‘Manish, you don’t know anything about this business!’ “I agreed, but I could learn. If you never

jump into the swimming pool, you’ll never learn how to swim.” Although Deepa was worried about the risk, she saw the passion that Manish had for Bollywood and told him if he wanted to do it, she was with him. One of the things Manish had to do was promote shows, and at the time, he said, there were no Indian marketing companies around. “With the American companies, the minimum starting budget was too high for me. Plus, they didn’t have an approach for the Indian market. That gave me the idea to start my own marketing company and promote the next show myself.” This was the beginning of Intense Entertainment LLC. He developed a strategy to amass a list of people and contacts by giving out free gifts and then sending emails about upcoming events. “My first show was July 24, 2011, in Constitution Hall, and it was completely sold

out,” he said. Not only did he develop better marketing skills, but he also focused on producing more elaborate and sophisticated events. “What was common among other promoters was substandard production,” said Manish. “They were cost cutting, but I wanted to give the audience value for their money and a wow factor.” His events continue to sell out, and now his shows are not just Indian attended events. His audiences are made up of people of all ages and from all cultures. Intense also holds an amazing Indian Independence Day event at Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville each year. Celebrated annually in India on August 15, it’s a national holiday commemorating the nation's independence from the United Kingdom in 1947. In 2018, the first year Manish did it, he booked one of the biggest Indian singers, Mika Singh, erected a huge light pole with a flag on the top, and brought in helicopters to drop flower petals on the crowd. In 2014, he started his IntenseDMV (Dynamic Musical Vision) Radio app, and in 2020, he expanded into IntenseDMV 102.9 FM. “It’s the only South Asian radio station broadcasting 24/7 worldwide,” said Manish. It has a mix of classic tunes, new songs, news, celebrity interviews, talk shows and more. The radio station also plays a big part in promoting live events and local and regional businesses. Manish did not stop there. He also developed Intense Café, a virtual coffee shop where he literally gives out free coffee.

Manish Sood and one of the legends of the Bollywood industry, actor, film producer, and television personality, Shah Rukh Khan.

“The first thing people do in the morning is have a cup of coffee, so they pull out my coffee bag and see my brand,” he said. “And then they may get in their car and tune into Intense DMV radio. When they get to work, they may see an email from Intense showing upcoming events. They cannot ignore me!” he said laughing. When COVID came on the scene, he was worried about his entertainment business, so he created another endeavor, Intense Realty Team. “Deepa and I went for our real estate licenses as a backup. It’s been a very successful venture.” Today, Intense Entertainment LLC is one of the top event planning companies in Washington D.C. representing the best in South Asian entertainment and Bollywood in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Even with all this success, Manish wants to do more. “Growing these businesses gives me a sense of satisfaction, but I still feel that there is a long way to go. I really want this to happen in other cities and states. I would also like more and more American participation and when I see 50-50 participation, that’s when I will be happy.” Manish and his wife have truly obtained their American Dream. And it was their partnership that made it all a reality. “There are a lot of people out there like me who may want to do this, but they have to have the vision, and the guts, and a wife like mine who stands behind me,” he said. “People want it to be easy, but there’s no easy way. You have to work hard.” TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT INTENSE ENTERTAINMENT LLC, GO TO INTENSEDMV.COM.

Although Sood’s events continue to sell out, like The Intense Tour for the top four winners of Indian Idol, and his audiences are made up of people of all ages and from all cultures, he says, “I would also like more American participation and when I see 50-50 participation, that’s when I will be happy.”

ravis Vernon, founder of Well Crafted Wine & Beverage Co., comes from a family of entrepreneurs. “My grandfather had a couple of businesses and my parents had a business, so the idea of working for myself wasn’t something that was particularly new for me,” he said. Spending time in Spain while in college ignited the Bristow resident’s entrepreneurial spirit and led him to where he is today. “I was there studying Spanish and taking a Spanish business course through UVA [University of Virginia],” said Travis. Through the college, he was connected with a woman with whom he could learn and speak the language. “Serendipitously, her father was a broker in the wine industry and he represented small family producers in Spain,” he said. “He helped them find commercial outlets for their product in Europe and Asia.” After returning to the United States and graduating, Travis began working for a business management company. “It was fascinating work and I loved it, but I was seeing people spending a lot of time away from family. So, I was really drawn to going out on my own.”

Above: Travis and Carolyn Vernon of Bristow launched Well Crafted Wine & Beverage Co. in 2010. “Our goal is to become the number one wholesaler and importer for artisan wineries,” said Travis. “We look at ourselves as serving consumers, but just as importantly, we serve the wineries that we represent.” Left: Dogwood Thistle is one of the many small, independent brands Well Crafted Wine & Beverage Co. is committed to helping build.

the rewarding and fulfilling part is helping people and helping their businesses.

He then flashed back to his time in Spain, and had the feeling that those small producers he had learned about were totally underrepresented in the U.S. marketplace. “I knew of all these great families and wineries in Spain that were so special. What we were seeing in stores were these big production brands that were fabricated for the market. But, they weren’t the farmers and the heart and soul of the wine industry. I thought, ‘What if we partnered with these COURTESY WELL CRAFTED WINE & BEVERAGE CO.

people to bring them to the U.S. market?’” By this time, he was married to Carolyn, his high school sweetheart, and they had one child and another on the way. He couldn’t just quit his job to follow his dream. “Very early on we knew we wanted a family and him being gone during the week was really hard,” said Carolyn. “So, when he proposed this idea to me, I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ We wanted to be entrepreneurs, we wanted to have more flexibility over our schedules, and we really believed in this.” Well Crafted Wine & Beverage Co. was founded in 2010 in Manassas. “We started with seven products, whereas the average distributor has 500,” said Travis. About a year in, the business grew, and Travis was able to dedicate himself full time to it. “We now import wines from all over the world - New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, a lot from South Africa, Italy, France, and from all over Spain. We also do quite a bit of domestic products from California, Oregon, Washington, and Virginia. The idea was right – small producers really needed an advocate because they are great farmers, they know how to make wine, but that doesn’t mean they know how to sell. They needed a sales channel.” Today, the business Left: Account manager has 12 employees, and Christina Kerr while Travis is involved Crawford at one of the in-house tastings in the day-to-day Well Crafted Wine & operations and Carolyn Beverage Co. offers handles many of the at its warehouse for administrative duties, restaurants and wine they both have plenty businesses.

of time to devote to their family. The couple, who live in Bristow, now have four children (ages 5 to 15 years) and have been able to find a happy work/home/life balance, and still be successful at what they do. “Our goal is to become the number one wholesaler and importer for artisan wineries,” said Travis. “We want this to continue to be a growth company and an impactful company for these farmers. We look at ourselves as serving consumers, but just as importantly, we serve the wineries that we represent.” Well Crafted’s mission is to Source Well, Serve Well, Staff Well. “There are a lot of people in this business, but we want to stand out,” said Carolyn. “I think if you asked our customers why they choose to work with us, they would say it’s because we do things just a little bit better.” Adds Travis, “We’re really proud of the fact that we help other businesses grow. It’s great to put a beautiful wine on someone’s table that wasn’t there before, but for us the rewarding and fulfilling part is helping people and helping their businesses.” The couple also believes in giving back to those less fortunate. Through The Water Project in Africa, some of the proceeds from Well Crafted helped fund a well. They’re also involved in an organization in South Africa that provides care, shelter and education to HIV positive children. Essentials to Adorn a Holiday Grazing Table RECOMMENDATIONS ON CHEESE BOARDS, CHARCUTERIE, AND SPREADS AND DIPS BY NATALIE ORTIZ

T

he holidays are a time for sumptuous feasts, and one of the best things about holiday parties is the assortment of appetizers — all of the different flavor and texture combinations to delight your senses. Whether you’re having a holiday open house or a full-on sit down meal, you’ll want to have some options for your guests to nibble on while they enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail. A beautiful grazing tablescape is the modern version of the passed or plated hors d’oeuvres of the past. These displays are often presented on a large round or long table in the center of a room and are truly the way to go as the set up encourages guests to mingle, linger, and spread holiday cheer. There are three things that are absolute must-haves to make a complete and interesting grazing table: charcuterie boards, cheese platters, and flavorful spreads or dips. This trio of options is a smart choice in an already busy time of year as they require little to no cooking and all selections, including the cheeses, can be served at room temperature leaving you free to spend time enjoying your guests. What helps turn the grazing table into an aesthetic delight are the accompaniments and edible garnishes — they are a great way to highlight the best of what’s available locally and seasonally while adding color and flavor.

C L A S S I C :

Cheese Boards Think of a cheese board as an artist’s palette- different textures, flavors, and milk varieties will spark curiosity and a selection of colorful accompaniments will embolden your guests to try something new. You’ll want to plan for about 3 to 4 ounces of cheese per guest and about four to six different varieties to ensure you’ll have something to please everyone. To make it easy (because one can be overcome with analysis paralysis when standing in the cheese section), I’ve shared some combinations of cheeses that are sure to be a success. Don’t fear if you can’t find the exact variety, just ask your cheesemonger to assist in making a substitution of something similar.

Spreads and Dips No grazing table would be complete without these! Plan on offering three to five options for your guests, and vary the flavor profiles. I’ve included three recipes that are sure to be a hit at your holiday party.

SUN DRIED TOMATO JAM WITH RICOTTA I N G R E D I E N T S

1 cup sugar 1¼ cups white Balsamic vinegar 12 oz. sun dried tomato strips, diced (dry, not oil packed) Whole milk high-quality ricotta cheese

Charcuterie Charcuterie, which is enjoying a revival recently, was actually a way of preserving meat products before modern refrigeration. There are several categories that fall under charcuterie: salted meats, forcemeats (ground lean meat emulsified with fat and seasonings), cured sausages (forcemeats encased in synthetic or natural tubing and then are cooked and cured), rillettes (salted meat that is cooked to render the fat and soften the meat resulting in a paste-like spread), pâté (ground meat, usually duck or chicken liver, that is heavily seasoned, put into a vessel, and then cooked in a water bath), terrines (similar to pâté but with a more coarse texture), and mousses (similar to a pâté but a lighter, silkier texture obtained by adding cream, eggs, or incorporating more air).

Place creme fraîche, smoked salmon, and cream cheese into the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until a mousse-like consistency forms. Add dill and pulse a few times to incorporate. Serve in a bowl or pipe onto individual crackers just before serving.

Place all items in a heavy bottomed saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until thickened. Remove from heat, cool until safe enough to handle and with an immersion blender, blend until desired texture is achieved. Because this will be paired with a smooth ricotta, I like to leave the jam with chunks of sundried tomatoes to vary the texture. Serve at a ricotta to jam ratio of 2:1

}

Add olives and chickpeas to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse several times, just enough to ensure a uniform size on all items. Do not purée; mixture should be chunky. Drizzle just enough olive oil to coat the pieces and mix gently by hand. Serve in a bowl, garnished with parsley.

Set Yourself a-Port… BY MARK LUNA

A

s we close yet another lifechanging year, perhaps now is the perfect time to indulge yourself with one of the truly timeless libations ever created…fortified wine. As defined, fortified wine is a dry wine to which a distilled spirit has been added, usually brandy. There are numerous fortified wines that have been produced (for centuries) from around the world, with incredible history and pinpoint identity. The readyfor-prime-time players include Sherry, from Jerez (sherry) Spain; Madeira, the pride of its namesake islands; Marsala,

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

from Sicily, which dates back to 1772; Commandaria, the often overlooked and underappreciated prize of Cyprus; and of course, Vermouth, the herb and spiced aperitif that owes its modern-day success to the Italian city of Torin. All of these are beautifully distinct, and I hope to introduce you to them in a more specific fashion in future columns. For this month, however, we travel to Portugal and explore what is really my favorite fortified wine of them all…Port. While port-styled wines can be found around the globe, with notable bottlings in Argentina, Australia, France, and Spain, those from Portugal, and only Portugal,

}

are allowed by the EU governing body to have the word port on the bottle. Origin is everything. Without getting lost in the historical weeds of it all, it’s important to note that port’s international reputation took afoot in the late 1600’s, when two English merchants traveled to Portugal to explore the wine trade.

Their discovery of a sweet, fortified red wine defined their entire journey, impelling them to purchase all they could and take it back to England. Upon the signing of the Methuen Treaty in 1703, port wine from Portugal became a household libation throughout England, setting the stage for future transports throughout the rest of the winedrinking world. Port hails from the Douro Valley, the 3rd oldest protected wine region in the world, dating to 1756. The wines that come from the Douro, as it’s known, are some of the most distinct wines in the world, especially the red wines. As most port is made from red wine grapes, the fermentation process is halted with the addition of a brandy-esque alcoholic beverage somewhere between 30-60% abv, which allows for the ultimate creation of a sweet red wine, which can be aged to very lengthy extents, tapping out at 20% abv. As for the grapes themselves, there are dozens that are recommended (and over 80 permitted) for the production of port, and there may be even more in the vineyards. Traditionally, certainly in the older vineyards throughout the Douro, large numbers of different grape species were planted together, and the

growers were often unaware of what they specifically had. The modernization of vineyards brought about the plantings of specific grape blocks, allowing grower to control more of the final usage of any given grape. Still, port is almost always a blend; Of the multitudes of grapes grown, these five have become globally recognized as the most significant…. Tinta Roriz (tempranillo) is lightweight, has low yields, but adds finesse to the blend. Touriga Nacional is considered the finest grape of the Douro, giving exceptionally low yields and small berries. Its wines are full-bodied and concentrated, and it’s found primarily in the best ports. Touriga Franca (formerly Francesca) is also a premium grape, producing robust and aromatic wines. Tinto Cao is the least abundant of the collection but is useful for its tannic qualities. And finally, Tinta Barroca is a thick-skinned, early ripening grape that makes for soft, fruity wines. There are many port styles, ranging from the young white port (white wine grapes) to the single-quinta vintage ports, which can be aged for decades. Of them all, the three most well-known are Fine Ruby, Fine Tawny and Aged-Indicated Tawny. As expected, there are

numerous (and great) port producers throughout the Douro; but there’s only one house that precedes them all… Kopke (kop-kuh). Nicolau Kopkë was producing wine as early as 1638 and pioneered what we now know as port wine. Fast forward almost 4 centuries later and Kopke is acknowledged by the Portuguese Commercial and Industrial Association as the oldest port house in the Douro Valley. They produce 64 ports, starting here: Winemaker Carlos Alves produces Kopke Fine Ruby Port, a style that’s the most popular throughout the world, certainly in the UK and here at home. It’s young and non-vintage, yet full-bodied and deeply colored. It’s generally sold at less than 3 years old, with a profile that leans towards the sweet side… firm and fresh, fruity, and harmonious. Priced around $20. Kopke Fine Tawny Port is produced in the style well favored in France. A blend of both ruby and white (white wine grapes) port, it’s rich and aromatic. A vivid orangey-brown color complements a bouquet

of ripe and honeyed fruit, combined with fragrant notes of vanilla…velvety smooth and beyond delicious. Also priced around $20. If time is marked by special moments, Kopke's history is written in exceptional years. And to that point, Kopke 10 Year Tawny is a number for the ages. The grapes are hand-picked at the optimum time, destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful maceration, extracting color, tannins, and aromas. Once the right degree of sweetness is achieved, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine. A blending of vintages matures in oak casks for an average time of 10 years, producing the resultant wine. Dark golden in color, with an amber rim, elegant and complex. Aromas of spice, with prevailing notes of dried fruit and hints of wood and honey set the stage for the palate. It’s glorious. Price around $35, it’s a gift worth giving and receiving. So, this last month of Holiday celebration, distinguish yourself with a Kopke port. And until next year, Happy Holidays and Happy Vino’ing!

Gainesville data center proposal moves forward on technicality

After 20 years, vision for 9/11 trail becoming reality

The September 11th National Memorial Trail will connect sites in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.

David Brickley, a Woodbridge resident and prominent state leader, has been working for 20 years to create a trail system linking all three September 11 sites: The National September 11 Memorial in New York City, the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., and the 9/11 National Pentagon Memorial. On Oct. 13, Brickley’s work culminated when President Joe Biden signed legislation to designate the “September 11th National Memorial Trail,” linking the sites with a trail of remembrance. Brickley received encouragement from Northern Virginia Reps. Gerry Connolly and Don Beyer, as he sought designation as a federal trail, which would protect the land’s purpose in the future. The House passed the bill 423-0 this summer, and the Senate passed it shortly thereafter by unanimous consent. “The September 11 National Memorial will serve a particularly significant role – honoring the families and loved ones who were victims of the attack, and the heroes who saved countless lives on such a tragic day,” Connolly said.

Prince William hiring tutors, math coaches to help offset learning loss caused by pandemic Prince William County Public Schools are hiring tutors and math coaches as part of their effort to address the drop in test scores and learning loss that resulted from a pandemicplagued school year. A staff presentation to the School Board in October provided a more detailed look at student performance last year within

A proposal to build a new data center along Interstate 66 in Gainesville will go to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors without a formal recommendation from the county Planning Commission. The proposal is for six rectangular data centers on 102 acres owned by Southview 66 LLC and Gainesville JM LC. The The proposed data center complex would be land is between Interstate across U.S. Route 29 from the Virginia Gateway 66, U.S. 29, Route 55 and shopping center, just south of Interstate 66. Catharpin Road. Following a public hearing Oct. 21, Gainesville Commissioner Richard Berry made a motion to deny the proposal, but it failed 4-3 with only commissioners Patti McKay and Joe Fontanella supporting the motion. However, no subsequent motion was made to recommend approval. On Oct. 25, the county’s deputy planning director, Meika Daus, said the proposal, dubbed the I-66 and U.S. 29 Technology Park, will move forward on a technicality. “Since the Planning Commission did not provide an action within its required timeframe, the proposal can move forward to a public hearing with the Board of County Supervisors with a statutory recommendation of approval from the Planning Commission pursuant to applicable provisions in the Zoning Ordinance and Virginia state code,” she said. No date has been set for the Board of Supervisors to hear the proposal.

the division, showing pronounced dropoffs in several key areas, most notably in mathematics, where the number of passing scores fell by 29 percentage points from the 2018-19 school year. (SOL tests were not administered in the spring of 2020, when the pandemic first shuttered school buildings). The percentage of students passing reading tests, meanwhile, fell by 7 points from 2019, though both score changes were largely mirrored by statewide results.

Rita Everett Goss, associate superintendent for teaching and learning, said the division has allocated $4.6 million across all 96 division schools to hire tutors. Administrators hope that consistent “high-dosage tutoring” during the school day – which includes three or more sessions per week of at least 30 minutes with targeted instruction on pre-requisite skills needed for students to be competent in grade-level subject matter – will help make up the ground that’s been lost.
