ne of the things I love most about Haymarket-Gainesville Lifestyle is that it’s all good news. Cover to cover, it’s a monthly celebration of the people in our community doing big things – and small things – with great love and for the greater good. In this issue, you’ll read about one trip that led to the enrichment of 50 lives. A hero who, with his family, gives back continually to our local Veterans. A family-run coffee shop that serves creativity with every cup. A celebration of many of our 2022 graduates. And a florist who grows native blooms in her backyard garden and in so doing promotes sustainability and sparks joy in each arrangement. We are honored to share these people’s stories and thank them for allowing us to do so. If you know someone who should be recognized and celebrated in Haymarket-Gainesville Lifestyle, please tell us. Drop me a note at susan@whglifestyle.com. Happy reading!

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM VARICOSE VEINS, SPIDER VEINS, OR TIRED AND ACHY LEGS?
UVA Vein & Vascular Care Gainesville There are many types of vein conditions, the most common of which are varicose and spider veins. Varicose veins are often the result of dysfunctional valves that cause blood to flow backwards and collect in the veins, making them enlarged. Spider veins are very small veins that appear as a red, purple, or blue web of veins just below the surface of the skin. Our team of specially trained providers use minimally invasive procedures to treat these vein conditions.

rowing up in military families gave husband and wife Toby and Tamara Anderson of Haymarket a true understanding of the hardships and joys of serving one’s country. His father was in the U.S. Air Force and hers was in the U.S. Army, and at times they lived overseas, away from family and friends. When Toby learned of the Willing Warriors Retreat at Bull Run in Haymarket, he made it a priority to get involved and help these deserving men and women in any way he could. Eventually, he brought his whole family along for the ride. The Retreat is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a mission to provide cost-free stays and programs that positively impact wounded, ill, and injured service members, disabled veterans, and their families. The organization relies on individuals, businesses, corporations, and other organizations to carry out its mission. While going through treatment for their injuries, which often takes them away from their homes, current and former service members get a break from a rehab center or hospital to reconnect with their families. They check into one of the two onsite houses on a Friday and then check

out on Tuesday. Each home has a big kitchen with pots and pans so families can bring their own food and cook. On one of those nights, a chef comes in and prepares a meal for them. Toby wanted to help feed the families too, so he and Tamara set out to provide meals on Friday nights. In order to do this, they partnered with one of their favorite restaurants, Tony's New York Pizza in Haymarket. “We really enjoy their food,” says Toby. “They have pizza, salad, pastas, subs, and more, so a family can choose whatever they want.” They started a relationship with Dan at Tony's and explained they were going to have some military families come in and they wanted to pay their checks. “We’re a family business, and these veterans and their families have a nice place to go where they feel welcome,” says Dan, who is part owner of the restaurant. “I love to talk to them when they come in, hearing about what they've been through and how great it is to see their families. It just makes me feel good that they’re getting together and they're happy.” Since this was during the height of COVID-19 in 2020,
"Education is the bridge between you and a successful life." Congratulations to Wakefield's Class of 2022! May you continue to seek the challenge, make a difference, and live extraordinary lives.

TOP: Toby and Tamara Anderson celebrated his birthday this year by helping to clean-up the grounds of Serve Our Willing Warriors. BOTTOM: The couple’s children, 16-year-old Jaelyn (not pictured) and 7-year-old Ryleigh are also involved in their volunteer work. “Last summer, Jaelyn went once a week and did whatever little tidbits they needed,” says Tamara. “She hand wrote thank you letters, organized and did inventory. She also helped out with their annual Corvette show. Ryleigh is helping us design our nonprofit’s new logo and both kids are coming up with values.”
it was also a good way for Toby and Tamara to help a small business. “We were encouraging people to participate in our local economy,” says Tamara. “We have a lot of small businesses in Haymarket and we didn't want to see them fail.” In order to continue providing these meals every Friday night for the long term, the Haymarket couple started a GoFundMe campaign, and Tony’s Pizza helped out too by covering some of the costs. But Toby and Tamara wanted to do more and weren’t sure what path to take until a windfall fell into their laps. Toby works for Red River, a technology transformation company, in its Chantilly office, and philanthropy is very

important to the company. The Red River Charitable Foundation was created to build impactful connections with students, veterans and communities in need. Red River honors and recognizes those employees that go above and beyond to make a significant impact in the lives of others. In March of this year, Toby won its Positively Transforming Communities Hero award. “He won $10,000 dollars!” says Tamara. “We decided to use this money to go ahead and start Feed-A-Family, a 501(c)(3) charity in order to expand the number of meals offered to the families staying at the retreat.” The couple’s children, 16-year-old Jaelyn and 7-yearold Ryleigh are also involved. “Last summer, Jaelyn went once a week and did whatever little tidbits they needed,” says Tamara. “She hand wrote thank you letters, organized and did inventory. She also helped out with their annual Corvette show. Ryleigh is helping us design our new logo and both kids are coming up with values for our nonprofit.” The family also celebrated Toby's birthday this year by going out and doing a clean-up of the grounds on April 23rd (Toby’s official birthday is May 1st). He and Tamara are hoping to obtain their 501(c)(3) designation by the end of the year. It’s a huge process, and both are working full-time (Tamara works for the Justice Department) while also raising their family. “We hope to grow past just Fridays and cover Tuesdays as well,” says Toby. “I would like this to be able to supplement the food for them.” They also would like to expand the number of restaurants they work with to include more choices and eventually cover the costs of groceries for the stay. For now, they are still using money received through the GoFundMe campaign. “We started this two years ago and never imagined that just two years later we would be blessed to increase the number of meals we can provide to the visiting veterans and their families,” says Tamara. “We are so thankful to all those that have supported our initiative. Your donations are what has allowed us to feed numerous families the last two years. We also want to recognize Tony’s Pizza for their donations, support, and service to the families when they come in for a meal.” hg To donate and help feed these true heroes and their families, visit gofundme.com/f/lets-feed-our-willing-warriors. More than a Great Cup of “Joe” Discover Vita Nova Creatives and Coffee BY SUE BALDANI
A
fter homeschooling her kids for many years, Paula Millar was ready to begin a new chapter in her life. So, she combined her love of coffee with her love of art and opened Vita Nova Creatives and Coffee in her hometown of Nokesville. “Vita Nova means new life in Latin, and it's just representative of this new adventure in my life,” she says. “I’ve always been a bit of a creative, but I had mostly shelved it during those years raising kids.” When patrons come into this charming and unique shop, they’ll see a coffee bar with not only delicious coffee beverages, but Italian sodas, hot and iced teas, various other tea drinks such as matcha and London Fog, as well as milkshake-like smoothies. Millar chose her coffee supplier carefully. “They have very high-quality beans and high standards, and they also have a great relationship with their farmers,” she says. “They're very committed to small businesses rather than the big name brands.” She also carries tasty treats to go along with the beverages. There are pastries made by a local catering company out of Nokesville, and some items are low in sugar and allergen friendly as well. Artists and aspiring artists will find several different paint lines in the back of the store, along with crafting embellishment items, decoupage papers, stamps, and more. A workshop space is also being built in the back area, and when it's done, it will be a space for Millar to work on her projects and to hold small classes.

The larger community room is available for customers to hold private events such as birthday parties, and this is also where art classes like wreath making, art journaling, and coming soon, cookie decorating, take place. The store also carries yarn, so classes on knitting and crocheting are available too. There will be painting classes as well, including furniture painting and watercolors. Furniture painting is actually Millar’s specialty, and she believes in bringing items that may have seen better days back to life, which

is also part of the Vita Nova philosophy. She finds these pieces through online auctions and travels to Massachusetts a few times a year to attend a giant flea market and pick up great treasures. Merchandise from local artists are spread out across the shop and available for purchase. “We have about 25 local artisans now and we have a list of more than 20 trying to get in,” she says. “We have a few pieces of painted furniture, plus a variety of other artwork like canvas art, metal signs, and string art, which is very popular. We also have several gift card vendors, and artists who make clothing and design-infused coffee tumblers.” Millar owns the business with her two daughters, Danielle Lynch and Becca Ferguson, and her daughter-in-law, Jessica Millar, who is married to her son, Alec. “Our business plan really was just to create a community within our community,” says Millar. “There really is nowhere in this area where people can meet up with others and just hang out and visit. So we've made sure to have plenty of seating, and we also have Wi-Fi.” The women want the store to be homey and inviting, a place where people feel comfortable staying a while. “We have a seating area next to a little electric fireplace, so it's kind of like a little living room right in the center of the store,” she says. “And there's a small table with interesting puzzles on it to pass the time and give the mind a bit of stimulation.” Adds Millar, “We have a play area which was important to us because my oldest daughter

and my daughter-in-law each have a young child and we knew these kids would grow up in this space. So we've got this toddler area with a giant chalkboard and shelves and a kitchen and toys. It’s very popular and allows young mothers to come in, sit with a cup of coffee and visit with friends and other moms.” She really loves seeing the relationships being made at Vita Nova Creatives and Coffee. Many of the local artists who’ve never met each other have been developing connections in the store, and friends in the community who rarely see each other have run into each other randomly. “We've been open since February, and we're still getting people coming in every day who’ve never been here before,” says Millar. “I’ve lived here for 19 years and pretty much raised our four kids here, but since I homeschooled, I never met that many people. Now, I’ve met more people in the shop than I have the whole time I’ve lived here!” Her husband, Tom Millar, is retired Air Force and has been selling real estate with Century 21 New Millennium Lighthouse for over 16 years. “That’s a family thing too – my son-in-law is on his team and my daughter-in-law is an admin.” Tom also flies small planes for the Civil Air Patrol and is one of three pastors in their church, Evergreen Community Church in Manassas. “We just love our community, and opening a store like this meant that I didn't have to compromise on the things I love,” she says. And with so many offerings, its patrons don’t have to compromise either. hg To find out more about this unique shop and to sign up for classes, go to vitanovacreatives.com.

lowers are almost always a gift from the heart. Whether you are professing love, celebrating an occasion, sharing in condolences, or simply practicing an act of self-care, flowers are the outward expression of our emotions. “There is research that flowers bring joy – free therapy,” said Anna Beall, founder and designer at The Fertile Burb in Gainesville. “Not only as gifts for others, but for ourselves. I hear it from our shareholders, who say ‘Oh my gosh, it’s so beautiful, my house smells so good, they bring us joy!’ Growing flowers is both good for the environment and for ourselves!”

“I was raised by parents who were true hippies,” Anna said. “My father was an organic gardener for Baltimore City before I was born, and both of them were social workers. I was always surrounded by environmental ideas and social issues; my parents were overcommunicators, so I was part of those conversations. My father was always in the garden and was very aware of his impact on the earth.”
Anna founded Fertile Burb on a one acre plot of land between Catharpin and Haymarket, but it was not part of a master plan; in fact, she almost stumbled into it. A Baltimore native, she grew up in a family that was clued in early on to sustainability. “I was raised by parents who were true hippies,” she said. “My father was an organic gardener for Baltimore City before I was born, and both of them were social workers. I was always surrounded by environmental ideas and social issues; my parents were over-communicators, so I was part of those conversations. My father was always in the garden and was very aware of his impact on the earth.”
Steam at The Fertile Burb Learning to knit, crochet, tie dye, and generally focus on creativity at her Waldorf elementary school had a huge influence on Anna as well, and before flowers she taught knitting and sold knitted items in her Etsy store. She met her husband Phil, also a Baltimore native, just one week before high school graduation; they were engaged before the year was up, and Phil joined the Air Force. They lived in Texas, Northern California and then finally Virginia to be closer to family after his ten years of service in 2007. The couple has three children – Aiden, 18, who graduated from Battlefield High School in June, Elias, 15, and Hazel, 12.
“They are my workhands,” Anna said. “The boys help with heavy-duty stuff, and Hazel is creative and helps with planting and other flower work.” In 2009, the family purchased their current home. “We couldn’t afford it,” Anna said. “It was not maintained -- there was mold around the light switches – but it was reasonably priced and had no offers. Ours was accepted just before the house was foreclosed.” The 1980’s house received a makeover first, and then they focused on the one acre, blank slate of a yard. “In the last twelve years, we built an addition, clubhouse, pool,

“The independent floristry industry is so fresh and interesting and more creative,” Anna said. “The reality is that locally grown products can be much more high-end and luxurious than imported flowers. There is a refinement you can’t get from imported flowers.”
“We have done Mother’s Day bouquet fundraisers for Battlefield’s crew team and they did a great job!” She commented. “Prom was fun and a good way to create awareness for teens and the community – they might not be aware of what goes on in the flower industry, but maybe some are cluing in that these are locally grown flowers from their own area.” Anna sees a disconnect with people who don’t understand local and in-season flowers and don’t know the difference between local and imported products. “The industry has been one way for so long, so I really try to teach the public what local flowers and sustainable floristry is all about,” she said. “What is in season? For instance, I don’t have roses you would put in a wearable, and I don’t grow baby’s breath. Teaching the public why that matters and why my product is better and how to support our local flower industry is key.” Also, the floral world historically depends on items like flower foam, which is not part of sustainable floristry. “Foam is plastic that we put in our sinks – choose florists that are no-foam or chemicals businesses. People need to ask the questions; the sustainable florists want you to know this.” Why purchase flowers from The Fertile Burb and not the grocery store, where they are cheaper? “That is just not my customer,” Anna added. “They see and love the difference.” “I learned about The Fertile Burb from a Facebook friend, and immediately joined the co-op,” shared Gainesville resident Frannie Barnes. “The flowers are just beautiful, and I love supporting a local, woman-owned business. Anna’s customer service is amazing (she did me a prom favor), and she now has a life-long customer, not only for the co-op but ordering for special events as well!” One of Anna’s main focuses is weddings, for which she offers three options: Full service flowers, a la carte single items, and DIY buckets: She supplies the flowers, and the customer does their own arrangements. “We can normally fulfill an order one week in advance, but two weeks is better, and there is a longer lead time for weddings,” she said. Fall season shares for the co-op should be available soon, and she is considering a straight tulip bunch share over the winter. “Tulips are considered an annual in the cut flower world,” she added. “Ours will be forced in my greenhouse – it’s a dinky greenhouse I built myself, but it does the job!” Anna is growing beautiful flowers on her one acre, joining in the slow flower movement by providing beauty, bringing joy, and supporting life, one arrangement at a time. hg

fences and gardens,” she said. “I started gardening when we moved into this house – I was inspired by the space.” Their garden quickly turned into a quarter-acre plot, and Anna dove into organic gardening and preserving, a call back to her father’s roots. “I want to give back to the earth instead of just taking,” she said. “I began growing flowers because we grew so much food, we couldn’t eat it all! By then, the kids didn’t require the same time commitment and I was yearning for something. One day, I was listening to a podcast about slow flowers (similar to the slow food movement), and the impact around the world the flower industry has on society and the environment. Local flower farms were emerging, and I thought oh my gosh, why have I not thought about this?” About a year and a half ago she began the business, doing weddings, events, and starting a flower co-op. “People would be surprised – we don’t have acres of flowers, and we are not set up like a true market garden. We are not an actual farm, and there are not flowers everywhere!” What motivated Anna besides her need to creatively produce was a drive to sustainable floristry, especially as she came to know the industry. “The independent floristry industry is so fresh and interesting and more creative,” Anna said. “The reality is that locally grown products can be much more high-end and luxurious than imported flowers. There is a refinement you can’t get from imported flowers. There is no regulation on the chemicals for imported flowers; people are bringing these into their house. If imported flowers are bad for the planet, why would we support that? We have to have things growing in order to keep our bee population and environment healthy – to benefit our own environment.” Her days are a mix of farming and floristry – two or three days in the garden weeding, planting, or figuring out what the plants need. She usually takes two days for harvesting and arranging – for shareholders and regular weekly orders, teacher appreciation week, someone’s mother coming into town, and other events.

How One Trip Changed 50 Lives BY SUE BALDANI
W
hen Debbie Harvey accompanied her husband Bill to Haiti on a missionary trip in 2008, the Haymarket wife and mom had no idea it would change the course of her life. While there, she came across 35 children in an abandoned building who were starving. “I gave them some food, water, and towels, and as I was on the airplane heading home, I started to cry,” says Harvey. “I knew something had to be done. We couldn’t just give them things temporarily. We would be abandoning them once again, as they'd been abandoned over and over.” Before the couple left the building, the children, many of whom were extremely ill, sat up and sang them a song. "It was a call from God, so we had a party in our backyard and asked people to bring their checkbooks,” she says. “We had food and drinks and showed a video of our trip. We raised $16,000 that day.”

Soon after, Harvey used that $16,000 and founded Helping Haitian Angels (HHA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Christian organization. Her board of directors consists of people she knows well. “They’re all wonderful people that listen to us, trust us and believe in us. They're all 100% passionate, committed, and dedicated.” Today, HHA’s annual budget is right under a million dollars. The nonprofit raises money through private donations, corporate sponsorships, and memorable fundraisers. A really fun and popular one is “Go Over the Edge,” a 14-story rappel down the Hyatt Regency Tysons Corner Center. The next rappel will take place on August 27th, so be sure to sign up.

Funds are used to support the six family homes, two transitional homes, a church, and an elementary school built by the organization and spread out over 40 acres in the small village of Dekle. Over 250 children from all over the area attend the school. It has STEM programs and even special education classes, which are not easy to find in Haiti. “For the homes, we hire loving Christian moms and dads to raise these kids and we vet them like crazy,” says Harvey. “Bill and I vowed that these kids would be raised exactly like we raised our three here in Haymarket. We have 60 staff members in Haiti, including teachers, and they’re all Haitian.” The children come from many different situations. “Some of them are true orphans, but in Haiti and other developing countries, they're called poverty orphans,” she says. “Typically, it's a mom or a grandma and sometimes a dad who put their kids with a group hoping that people will take care of them and give them food and shelter because they can't.” One of the other critical things HHA is now working on is family reunification and family preservation. “We’re trying to put the children back with their families, and then we’re coming alongside them to help with job creation and everything that goes along with family preservation, such as paying for the child's education, medical and dental, and other expenses.”

There’s also an outreach program, and a community savings/business program to give people tools for a better life. For Naomi Studtmann, of Haymarket, who started volunteering when she was 16, Harvey’s mission has also become her mission. “After that first day of being overwhelmed and wanting to leave, I began to fall in love and see the beauty in Haiti and her people,” she says. “Over the next three years I started going more often and staying longer until one day, at the age of 19, I never left!” After switching to online learning after her freshman year of college, Studtmann graduated from Purdue University with a degree in psychology and in May of 2022, obtained her Master’s in global health from New York University. Today, she is the operations manager of HHA. At the end of last year, Studtmann returned to the United States, but she, like Harvey, travels to Haiti every one to two months. “Our Haitian leaders now oversee our various programs,” she says. “There are many organizations working in other countries, but the philosophy of Helping Haitian Angels is the reason I stay. This organization, led by our incredible founder Debbie Harvey, believes in doing right by the Haitian people. We don’t give handouts, we empower.” Today , HHA supports around 50 children, and 18 of them are in what they call their transitional program for

Two of those original 35 kids got into medical school and leave this month, which is truly amazing. “The Haitian people have faced many hardships, but they live life to the fullest,” says Studtmann. “They support and love each other. The sense of community in Haiti is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. These six years have shaped who I am and I’m so grateful to God and to Haiti for changing my life.” It’s been six years since the Harveys threw that party in their backyard. “About three days after that party, I remember waking up at 3:00 in the morning and telling Bill that this was going to be a lifelong thing because once you start taking care of children, you can't stop,” says Harvey. And through all the tumult over the last few years, they haven’t stopped once. hg To find out more, go to www.helpinghaitianangels.org or email Harvey at debbie@hhangels.org. She attended Prince William County middle and high schools growing up. “She moved to Boston the same time I moved to France for culinary school,” Andrew said. “We started a very long distance relationship and got to know each other by writing letters. I came back to the United States and we ended up returning to the Woodbridge area.” When a 10-acre property went up for sale, they decided to see what possibilities it held. “We needed a little more elbow room,” Andrew said. “We were tired of living a foot away from our neighbors, so we decided to make a move to the country.” They pur-

chased the property in 2018. Andrew has a background as an executive chef so the idea of being able to raise the food they would eat, not to mention knowing everything that was going into the food — animal proteins, vegetables, and fruit — was a thrilling prospect for these newbie farmers. “We have no background in farming or anything. We started with chickens,” Nina said. “We added bees and realized how difficult they are to take care of and how many things like to kill them. We ended up having more time on our hands when COVID-19 started, so that’s when we really jumped in.” Once the pandemic hit, they were able to add a pig and a dairy cow to their farm. “Our dairy cow thinks she might be the family dog,” Nina said. “She was bottle-raised. It’s such a pleasure to raise these animals and get to know their personalities. Our dairy cow got lonely, so we added a beef cow. We also added two babydoll sheep last year.” On top of all of the animals, the Fleischauers are trying to determine how much of a garden they can manage. “In the beginning of our relationship, we had a garden outside of Fenway Park,” Andrew said. “There are some of the oldest historic gardens in the country there.

We always loved gardening together.” On the weekends, Sunshine Honey Farm operates a farm stand on the property that sells baked goods, jams, pickles, and other seasonal items. “It was spring of 2021. We thought we would just put our extra vegetables out,” Nina said. “We had friends that knew about Andrew’s baking who were asking about his cinnamon rolls, English muffins, and ‘Andy’s jam.’ We added those items and it’s been very helpful, particularly since we didn’t have a great vegetable crop that year. The baked goods help to cover the cost of some of the feed and other farm expenses.” Indeed, Sunshine Honey Farm’s baked goods are very popular. “We picked up the chocolate chip bread cake and coffee,” said Lauren Martinez of Nokesville. “They were a hit! We can’t wait to try some more dishes.” The land that Sunshine Honey Farm exists on today has actually been farmland for decades. “To our understanding, the farm was a mono-

culture operation where one crop was raised over and over again,” Nina said. “Having the animals graze different parts of the property has brought depth back to the soil. We’re focused on regenerative agriculture and believe that having our animals rotating to different locations will make the pasture richer and more vibrant and bring good life back to the soil.” The Fleischauers understand that farming is a long game. “In the short-term, we’ve already started to see signs of better biodiversity and richness to the soil, but we know it will take time to have the long-term impact we’re looking for,” Nina said. “We find ourselves getting super excited about our pasture and how the grass is growing.” While it’s been a lot of learning for Nina and Andrew, it’s been a learning curve for their children, as well. “They moved at an impressionable age from suburban schools that they had been in since Kindergarten to this farm life,” Nina said. “As parents, we’ve tried to let them do the things they feel comfortable with. naturally come to enjoy it instead of forcing them into it. As a result, they’ve really come to appreciate the farmstead. It’s been a very enriching experience for us as a family.” The Fleischauers’ daughter will be attending William and Mary in the fall and their son will be a junior at Brentsville High School. “Jackson is excited to be part of the FFA program,” Nina said. “They have great leadership.” As far as growth goes, Sunshine Honey Farm is looking to continue learning and finetuning their processes. “We want to be able to get more vegetables out of our garden. That’s where we’re going to focus a lot of energy this year,” Nina said. “We’re going to add a greenhouse that allows us to really grow in three seasons. We’d love to have a small farm store so we can have our products in a more weather-protected space.” When they’re not working on the farm, both Nina and Andrew have full-time jobs. “I’m a chef and Nina is a materials manager at a surgery center here in Haymarket,” Andrew said. “We have heard many other farmers say it’s really important to work your farming operation part-time for as long as you can. We’ve accepted that those folks who have made a leap from part-time to full-time have learned through hard work. You really have to trust the voices of the farming community.” Sunshine Honey Farm is passionate about raising their animals well. “We feel that makes for a really superior product that you can be happy feeding your family,” Nina said. “All of the feed our animals get is balanced nutritionally so what they’re not getting in the pasture is still really healthy food. All of their inputs are the best they can be so that what we harvest is good for the humans who are consuming it. Adds Andrew, “We’re trying to make a difference in our little corner and help people realize that what you eat matters.” hg Sunshine Honey Farm | 10725 Lonesome Road, Nokesville Open weekends from June through October. Discover ‘The Many Rooms’ at ARTfactory in Manassas
The ARTfactory in Manassas is presenting a solo mixed-media exhibit called “The Many Rooms” by Washington artist Zsudayka Nzinga. Based on the scripture, “In my Father’s house there are many mansions/rooms” ( John 14:1-6), Nzinga observes experiences in her home and with family just prior to the pandemic through the new year. Finding inspiration from the little moments, Among Zsudayka Nzinga's Nzinga draws from the works on display at the richness of American ARTfactory is “Mourning," a Black culture, covermixed-media piece on canvas. ing mental health and isolation, class and social uprisings, watching riots and the aftermath from the perspective of her children and the many ways to revolt while finding the beauty in navigating the changing world. The subjects are surrounded in greenery and Afro-Bohemian interior design and examine the ways in which we create safe spaces in our homes. Nzinga is originally from Denver. Her work is largely focused on mixed-media portraiture of American life, including themes of motherhood and culture. She also makes jewelry using silver, wood, resin and precious stones. She has three children and is married to another artist, James Terrell.
Gallery: ARTfactory, 9419 Battle St., Manassas Exhibit dates: Now through July 23. Gallery hours, Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
People are Back to Taking the Bus – and the Train With gas prices high and office work returning for many, riders are returning to the area’s buses and trains. The coming 2023 fiscal year, which begins July 1, will be crucial for every transit agency in the region as federal pandemic relief money that has been used to backfill losses in fare revenue begins to run out. If bus and rail operators can’t meet budget ridership goals, they could have to cut service, which in itself can turn away riders by making the service less useful. But right now, the area’s transit agencies have some reason for optimism. For both VRE and OmniRide, the first quarter of 2022 brought the highest ridership since the COVID-19 pandemic began. In fact, OmniRCommuters grab a ride to the Pentagon from the Dale City ide said that May numbers – which haven’t been fully OMNIRIDE lot, in the pre-dawn reported – hit 50% of pre-COVID levels, a high-water hours in November 2020. market for the pandemic era. “Our ridership trends are following many of the same patterns noted by other transit agencies in the region,” said Perrin Palistrant, OmniRide’s director of operations and operations planning. “A combination of more people returning to their offices in person, more people commuting in general locally or into the D.C. employment core and more traffic on the roadways has led to the consistent monthly increases we are having.”
Potomac High School Culinary Arts Teacher Wins a Delicious Honor The Virginia Restaurant, Lodging, and Travel Association Education Foundation has named Ronald Evans, a culinary arts teacher at Potomac High School, the recipient of the 2022 Virginia ProStart Educator Excellence Award. The award recognizes a teacher who has shown dedication to his or her students – and to ProStart – and provides a career and educational program that brings the food service industry and the classroom together, teaching high school students culinary skills and restaurant management principles, according to a news release. Evans demonstrated passion to his students and exceptional innovation in the virtual classroom while his lessons were offered online during the COVID-19 pandemic, the release states. Evans started a weekly Zoom event called "Talk to Me Chef " to provide students with the opportunity to hear from well-known chefs from all over the country. As a result, his students had real-world opportunities and experiences to strengthen their culinary skills. Evans is now eligible for the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation's (NRAEF) and Golden Corral's James H. Maynard Teacher of the Year Award.
