Origin of a Recipe STUFFED FRENCH TOAST BY AARON LYNCH, CHEF-OWNER, HIDDEN JULLES CAFE
W
elcome to the third edition of the Origin of a Recipe. This month we’re featuring our irresistibly yummy stuffed French toast. It’s a perfect dish for holiday breakfasts or my family’s favorite meal, brinner (breakfast for dinner). At Hidden Julles Cafe, we serve stuffed French toast all day long. Our everyday stuffed French toast features house-made strawberry jam, cream cheese, and walnuts inside of a fresh Hidden Julles Cafe baked French loaf. We top it with powdered sugar and organic maple syrup. We offer a gluten-free option, too. It’s one of our most popular dishes. (We also make a savory Monte Cristo version with turkey, ham and provolone stuffed inside the French toast. Delicious!) My love for stuffed French toast began when I was about fourteen years old. I spent a lot of time at my best friend, Dean Freeland’s house. Dean’s dad, Wayne, made a mean stuffed French toast and I have many fond and filling memories of stuffing myself to the gills with his amazing creation. So, when we opened Hidden Julles Cafe, I pretty much stole Wayne’s recipe. Thankfully, he approves, and I’m thrilled to share this recipe with you here. I originally purchased pre-made organic strawberry jam for the stuffed French toast. After reading the ingredients and doing some research, I realized how easy it would be to make my own. What a difference fresh, home-made strawberry jam adds to this dish. I strongly encourage you to make the jam. You’ll be amazed at how easy and delicious it is. Stuffed French toast is a dish that you can be super creative with. Many days at Hidden Julles Cafe we offer a seasonal stuffed French toast as a daily special. My recent favorite Hidden Julles Cafe variation is French toast stuffed with apples, brie cheese, and cashews with a gooey caramel sauce drizzle. The variations are endless, have fun experimenting with both sweet and savory creations. Our family loves setting up a “stuffing station” for our brinners where everyone chooses their own stuffings and toppings, which is similar to a make your pizza night.

strawberries in medium sauté pan over medium heat. 2. Cover strawberries with sugar. 3. Heat 15-20 minutes stirring occasionally using a rubber spatula. 4. all ingredients in a bowl until smooth and one color. 2. Place in a flat bottom Pyrex. ST U F F E D F R E N C H

one side of two slices of bread in the egg wash then transfer to the hot skillet. 4. Spread one side with cream cheese and the other with strawberry jam. 5. Add crumbled walnuts to the top of the strawberry jam. 6. Place the cream cheese covered French toast on top of the jam covered French toast. 7. Gleanings from the Bible
Ruth 2:2
The Divine Romance Have you ever heard that the Bible is a romance? If you enter into the deep thought of the Bible, you will realize that it is a romance, in the most pure and holy sense, of a universal couple. The male of this couple is God Himself. Although He is a divine Person, He desires to be joined to a counterpart. Through a long process, He has become Christ as the Bridegroom. The female of this couple is a corporate human being, God’s redeemed people, including the saints of the Old Testament and the New Testament. After a long process this corporate person results in the New Jerusalem as the bride. This holy romance is revealed throughout the Old Testament. Immediately after the record of God’s creation, we find the story of a marriage (Gen. 2:21-25). In this marriage Adam is a type of Christ as the husband, and Eve is a type of the church as the wife. Ephesians 5 indicates that Adam and Eve typify Christ and the church. The type of Adam and Eve reveals that the persons of the universal couple must be of the same source. God created one person, Adam, and out from this person a wife came. Eve was made from a rib, a bone, that came out of Adam, indicating that both Adam and Eve issued from the same source. Likewise, the church comes out of Christ (John 19:34). The two persons of the universal couple must be of the same source. It follows that they would also have the same life, nature, and living. Adam and Eve lived together. She lived by him and with him, and he lived by her and with her. Several times in the Old Testament God through the prophets refers to Himself as the Husband and to His people as His wife (Isa. 54:5; 62:5; Jer. 2:2; 3:1, 14; 31:32; Ezek. 16:8; 23:5; Hosea 2:7, 19). Humanly speaking, we tend to think of God in a religious way as the Almighty and feel compelled to worship Him. But is this what husbands desire from their wives? Suppose your wife thought of you as a giant, bowing herself before you, and kneeling down to worship you. What would you say? You would say, “Silly wife, I don’t need such a worshipper. I need a dear wife to embrace me and kiss me. If you will simply give me a little kiss, I will soar in the air.” Psalm 2:12 says, “Kiss the Son, Lest He be angry.” Our God certainly is the almighty God, and, as His creatures, we must worship Him. Many verses speak about worshipping God in this way. However, we also read in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Hosea that God desires to be a husband. In ancient times God’s people built the temple and established a system of worship complete with priesthood and sacrifices. One day God intervened and spoke through Isaiah, essentially saying, “I am tired of this. I am weary of your sacrifices. I want you to love Me. I am your Husband, and you must be My wife. I want to have a marriage life. I am lonely. I need you, My chosen people, to be My wife.” Unique among of the thirty-nine books in the Old Testament, Song of Songs, speaks of two people who fall in love. In this book we find a woman falling in love with a man saying, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!” (1:2). Immediately, her beloved is at hand, and the pronoun changes from he to you. “Your love is better than wine…Your name is like ointment poured forth… Draw me; we will run after you” (vv. 2-4). She did not want him to teach her as a pastor, a preacher, or even an apostle but to draw her. What a romance! We may kiss the Lord by confessing His name (Heb. 13:15; Rom. 10:12) and by simply saying, “Lord Jesus, I love you.” The first figure to which the beloved in Song of Songs compares his seeking lover is a company of horses (v. 9). Horses are strong, energetic, full of personality, and seek a definite goal of their own. Gradually, by the working of love, the seeker is changed from a company of horses to a lily that is fragrant, beautiful, and blossoming (2:2). She becomes a lily without will, emotion, or person. Eventually, she becomes a pillar (3:6). Although the word pillar denotes something strong, the seeker was likened to a pillar of smoke, not a pillar of marble. She is a pillar of smoke that stands erect and steadfast yet is very flexible. The seeking one in Song of Songs eventually becomes a palanquin to
carry her beloved (v. 9). She no longer has a person of her own; her beloved is now the person within her. Later, the seeker becomes a garden growing something to satisfy her beloved (4:12-13). Finally, she becomes a city, like Tirzah and Jerusalem (6:4), signifying the New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:2). In Song of Songs 6:1 the seeker’s name is Shulammite, the feminine form of Solomon, indicating that at this point she has become Solomon’s duplication, counterpart, the same as him in life, nature, and expression (cf. Rom. 8:29). She is without any person of her own but has the strong person of Christ within her (Gal. 2:20). This is the holy romance. The secret of this romance is that the wife must take her Husband not only as her life and her living but also as her person. There is no doubt that the four Gospels give us a full record of Christ as our Savior. However, have you noticed that the Gospels also tell us that Christ came as the Bridegroom? Each of the four Gospels presents Christ as the Bridegroom coming for the bride (Matt. 9:15; Mark 2:19; Luke 5:34; John 3:29). When the disciples of John the Baptist saw many people forsaking John to follow the Lord Jesus, John told them not to be troubled, that Christ is the Bridegroom, and that all the increase belongs to Him (v. 30). The Bridegroom has come for the bride, which is the increase of Christ. In the Epistles Christ and the church are further revealed as husband and wife (Eph. 5:25-32). The Epistles clearly liken Christ and the church to husband and wife. In 2 Corinthians 11:2 Paul exclaims, “I am jealous over you with a jealousy of God; for I betrothed you to one husband to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.” In the Epistles Christ is revealed as our Husband, and the believers are revealed as His counterpart, His wife. The Epistles also compel us to be one with Christ in life (Col. 3:4), in nature (2 Peter 1:4), and in daily living (Gal. 2:20). Ultimately, the book of Revelation unveils the wedding feast of Christ (19:7), and presents the New Jerusalem is as His wife (21:2, 9). In Revelation 21 and 22, the last two chapters of the Bible, we see that the ultimate consummation of the whole Scriptures is this universal couple—a husband and wife. The Bible tells us that the two persons of this couple are one (Gen. 2:24; Eph. 5:31). Adam and Eve were one flesh. Christ and His chosen people are one, universal, corporate man with Christ, the Husband, as the Head (4:15) and the church, the wife, as the Body (1:22-23). In Revelation 22:17 the Spirit and the bride, the church, speak together as one person to say, “Come!…Let him who is thirsty come; let him who wills take the water of life freely.” This universal couple is the kernel of the divine revelation in the Word of God. The entire revelation of the Bible shows us a love story, that is, the sovereign Lord, who created the universe and all things, the Triune God— the Father, the Son, and the Spirit—who went through the processes of incarnation, human living, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, and who ultimately became the life-giving Spirit, is joined in marriage to the created, redeemed, regenerated, transformed, and glorified tripartite man—composed of spirit, soul, and body—who ultimately constitutes the church, the corporate expression of God. In the eternity that is without end, by the divine, eternal, and surpassingly glorious life, they will live a life that is the mingling of God and man as one spirit, a life that is superexcellent and that overflows with blessings and joy! Yes, the Bible is a romance, and it has the most wonderful happy ending! “Gleanings from the Bible” is a twelve-part series contributed by a local Christian home meeting group that loves the Lord Jesus, believes that the Bible is God’s Word, and cares for the oneness of the Body of Christ. A
Homemade Wreath BY EMILY CHILDRESS
A
wreath is a harbinger of the holidays, a chance to show off your individual style, and a lovely way to greet guests. Stored properly, it can last for years and become a staple of your seasonal decorating. And yes, making your own wreath can be a relaxing way to spend an afternoon or evening. Follow the simple steps here to create one for yourself or to give as a gift. Note: Please read through the directions prior to starting your project. Thanks!
What You’ll Need
How to Make Your Wreath
• Wire wreath base: a base made of a few connecting circles of wire that looks similar to a frame
1. Begin by forming a solid bundle of greenery. Pinch the stems together, lay it on the wreath base and wrap floral wire around it a few times. 2. Continue this process all around the wreath base. As you add each bundle, overlap the previous one by half, then wrap the wire around the stems. Continue adding bundles until you reach the starting point.
• Thin green wire (25-30 gauge wire is best) • Scissors
3. If you’d like, you can now intersperse clusters of holly, pinecones, bells, fruits, or other embellishments between the greenery bundles.
• Hot glue or glue gun • Lots of artificial pine, cypress, spruce, fir, or evergreen bunches • Red berries, snow-capped pine cones, ornaments, or other decorations
4. Want a more wintery feel? Add a touch of “snow” to your creation. Holding a bottle of spray snow a good distance from the wreath to prevent clumps, lightly spray the tops of the bundles. If you’d rather skip the mess, you can always purchase pre-snowed greenery at the store.
• Battery-powered tea candles or Christmas lights
5. For shimmer and shine, spray-paint a portion of the greenery gold or silver before making the bundles. This will also extend the wreath’s life.
• Spray snow if you want a snow-capped wreath
6. Like the look of your wreath? Congratulations. You’re done! Still looking for some extra oomph? Add ornaments with hot glue or work batterypowered tea lights or Christmas lights through the greenery. It’s your wreath, so use what makes you feel festive.
• Gold or silver spray paint if you’d like some shine

Honestly, for us, that’s just too low of a bar. So we treat older adults differently. We forge meaningful relationships based on admiration and trust. We’re there for them with encouragement and anything they need. This way, care is a by-product of a loving relationship, not a slogan. There is purpose in every breath. Let us help you see how.

he holiday season is often a time of rushing around, gift shopping, and school events. Sooner or later, though, there comes a day when you look around and it’s quiet. The presents are unwrapped, and the kids are still out of school. Now what? If your family has some extra downtime this holiday season, why not deep dive into a great story? Either on the page or screen, now is a great time to introduce the whole family to one of your childhood favorites or discover a new world together.

Local Author Carla Vergot’s Lily Barlow, the Mystery of Jane Dough
L
ifestyles is delighted to feature this excerpt from Lily Barlow, the Mystery of Jane Dough, by Carla Vergot, Haymarket resident and longtime writer for our sister publication, The Piedmont Virginian. At Lifestyles, we have long appreciated Carla’s writing, which revolves around her garden as it helps her through life’s ups and downs in stories related with a dry humor and sometimes heartbreaking honesty. Lily Barlow, the Mystery of Jane Dough is part romance, part mystery, and totally entertaining. It’s set in Marshall, Virginia, and stars Lily Barlow, a UVA co-ed who comes back home begrudgingly to deal with her family’s struggling bakery, her best friend Jack (who suddenly wants to be more than friends), a quirky landlord, and some aggressive chickens, all while trying to solve a mystery of an unidentified murder victim. We couldn’t put it down, and you won’t be able to either. It’s a great read and the perfect holiday gift.

{ DECEMBER 2018 |
I watched Miss Crazy start the arduous process of old bones standing up. “I have just what you’re lookin’ for, honey. It’s a fully furnished guest suite. Small kitchen, bath. You’ll be in your place, and I’ll be in mine. There will be no reason whatsoever for us to bother each other.” Was I mistaken, or was the implication that I shouldn’t bother her? “How much are you asking?” Because at this moment, it all came down to cash money. “And will you accept a week-to-week commitment?” Nothing says I’m-not-moving-home like a short-term lease. “Don’t you want a look-see first?” I shook my head no. “If the door locks, it’ll be fine, but my budget is kinda tight right now. I may not be able to afford it.” “You can afford it, honey child,” she assured me. “I want a person on the property more than money in the bank, as long as it’s the right person. You’re the sixteenth applicant in eight months and the only one I’ve bothered to interview.” Smiling at what constituted an interview, my gaze landed on a pair of muddy men’s work boots, size huge, sitting on the top step of the porch. Hmmm. Did Miss Crazy Pants have a man around despite what she said? Unless the aforementioned murderous intentions of her human heart put an end to that poor bastard. Was he living on the property or buried under it? Following my gaze, she offered an explanation, “Best home security system on the market. Four dollars at the thrift store. Mud not included.” I nodded my appreciation. I liked this ol’ gal more and more...a little bit of moxie wrapped in a floral print tied with an apron string. “I’ll take it.” “Woman who knows her mind. Good. Get yourself settled back in town, and we’ll come to a monetary arrangement. For now, feed the chickens and pet my dog when he comes around.” Chickens? Mentally calculating how close I had to be to a chicken in order to feed a chicken, I noticed for the first time a lazy, mostly-black mutt lying under a shrub, guarding her collection of trowels. He honored me with one thump of his dusty tail before drifting back to sleep. “Name’s Cro. Short for Velcro. Wandered into the barn five years ago, thin as a number two pencil. Hasn’t left my side since. He’s good company, and he don’t like many people, so the fact he hasn’t barked you up is your stamp of approval. Now come on.” Out of the corner of my eye, I saw she was already halfway to the front porch. Quick for old. I took a few giant steps to catch up. At the door she said, “Wipe your feet. Not just this time. Every time.” The clatter of scissors and screw drivers being pushed around a junk drawer drew my attention. She rummaged with gusto and eventually fished out a key on a plastic key ring shaped like a starfish. Whatever it advertised had long since rubbed off, so just a translucent orange starfish at this point. Out the back door, we cut across the mowed lawn to a free-standing garage that matched the house. “These steps get slick in the rain.” The exposed wooden staircase climbed diagonally up the outside of the garage to a small deck with two weathered Adirondack chairs and a low table between. Crossing the threshold, it became clear I would be renting my own little piece of the 1970s. Nothing too fragile or frilly. It was, however, heavy on the avocado section of the color wheel. “I don’t care who you bring up here, but Cro might. The password for the internet is on the fridge. There’ll be no cookin’ meth. Any questions?” The devil in me wanted to ask where in the hell I was supposed to cook my meth, but I stuck to my actual questions. “Two,” I said. “What should I call you? And where’s the chicken feed?” “I’m Miss Delphine Walker, and the scratch is down in the garage. One scoop each mornin’. Throw it on the ground back by the coop.” Without so much as a handshake, I had my apartment. Cleaner and more comfortable than I could have hoped.

enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard, and other first response agencies, primarily in counties that can’t afford airborne SAR assets themselves. We are 100% volunteer, and 100% donor supported, receiving no taxpayer funding. We are currently in the process of raising funds to replace our helicopter’s rotors, which have exceeded their allowable life. We greatly appreciate every business or individual who wants to help get us back in the air. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced with this nonprofit.
When and why did you decide to join VASARS?
I joined VASARS in 2013 after hearing a presentation to our church men’s group by the founder, Kevin Rychlik. How does VASARS serve the local community?
VASARS provides helicopter and drone airborne search and rescue services to law
The very best part of working with VASARS is the moment when we get to inform a family that their missing person has been found alive and well. That makes all the work, training, and fundraising we do to prepare worthwhile. Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported VASARS?
VASARS is a newcomer to HGBA, and we are very excited by the opportunities
it has provided for us to spread the word about our mission and interact with local business owners. Small business owners are among our most valued and ardent supporters. Without them, we would not be able to continue flying to save lives. What are the top three business tips and tricks you can offer others?
As a non-profit, we’re not really in it for the business, but we do work hard to try to meet as many people in the community as possible, and let them know how we help the community. Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town?
Though I’m not originally from Virginia, my family moved to Alexandria in 1979, so I’ve been here longer than anywhere else. We’ve lived in Haymarket for 9 years, and Manassas for 17 years before that. What is your favorite season in this area, and why?
Any time there’s decent
weather. Virginia has its appeal year-round. What are some hobbies you enjoy?
I enjoy aerial photography, “normal” photography, and audio-visual production. I’m also a part-time audiobook narrator. What is your favorite restaurant?
Probably Tony’s NY Pizza. We’ve been going there for 28 years now. What is your favorite local high school sports team?
My daughter went to Battlefield, so I have to say we’re Bobcat fans. On the other hand, our chief’s son went to Patriot, so there’s some Patriot pride around as well. What was your first job, or your most interesting job to date?
I currently provide air support coordination for VASARS, which often puts me in situations I wouldn’t have expected, interacting with law enforcement and other agencies. It’s challenging, but also very rewarding.❖

he holidays are a time when many of us reflect on how fortunate we are and such reflection frequently motivates us to reach out and give to those who are not as lucky. Of course we don’t always know where to go in order to give, so we’ve compiled a list of organizations that could use your help in order to continue helping others. Select one or three, get the family or a group of friends involved, and help make this season especially festive for those less fortunate.

Operation Santa Adopt a Senior
HERO’S BRIDGE / MIDLAND
Families 4 Fauquier is committed to enriching the lives of children and families by providing a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. One such opportunity is “Operation Santa Adopt A Senior,” a program dedicated to providing local senior citizens who, sadly, are often alone or forgotten during the holidays, a special Christmas celebration. Families 4 Fauquier will provide each sponsored senior citizen with a stocking of goodies, small gift card and small gifts from their wishlist. The organization is seeking local families to sponsor a senior and there is still time to participate. (Deadline is Monday, December 10.) Battling the Winter Blues Tips for staying on top of your mental health over the holidays BY SUSAN TULINO, NOVANT HEALTH UVA HEALTH SYSTEM
T
he holiday season can be a wonderful time of year in numerous ways, filled with traditions, festivities and time spent with loved ones. However, during this time many Americans also experience heightened stress, anxiety and depression. In stark contrast to exuberant, outward holiday cheer, people often battle their “holiday blues” privately. The holiday season makes December one of the most demanding – and draining – months of the year for many people. Factors such as financial pressure, overscheduling, loneliness, setting unrealistic expectations or concern over getting sick can lead to a decline in mental health, which manifests in increased stress and anxiety levels and feelings of depression. “When the holidays roll around, it’s not uncommon for feelings of stress, anxiety and sadness to become elevated,” said Karyn L. O’Brien, PsyD, clinical psychologist and senior director of behavioral health at Novant Health UVA Health System. “We see patients experiencing a range of emotions caused by anything from a to-do list that seems like it’s never-ending, to grieving the first Christmas without a loved one who’s passed. Society puts pressure on the season to be joyous and festive, but for some, it simply isn’t. Those feelings are valid, and it’s important to know when to ask for help.”
“Making small lifestyle changes or setting boundaries can make a world of difference in staying positive and energized during the holidays.”
Stress, anxiety and depression mean different things to different people. Some may cope well with minor stressors, such as longer lines at the grocery store, but feel overwhelmed budgeting for gifts, party food or travel costs. To one person, socializing at parties is the most anxiety-inducing part of the season, while someone else might feel anxious about getting the house clean enough for the visiting in-laws’ standards. Depression can be triggered by missing a loved one who has passed away, or by feeling isolated from family and friends due to hectic schedules or the inability to travel. It doesn’t help that seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of seasonal depression, also rears its ugly head around this time of year. Approximately 20 percent of the population is affected by mild to extreme SAD, triggered
L CIA ER M M CO
by decreasing daylight hours and cold temperatures imposing limits on outdoor time. Regardless of what causes these feelings, be it external factors or the body’s natural reaction, they can quickly sour this festive time of year. So, how do we overcome feelings of anxiety, stress and depression around the holidays? “We often see patients who feel it’s their responsibility to make the holiday season ‘perfect’ for themselves and their loved ones and end up saying ‘yes’ to too many things as a result, taking on more than they can realistically handle,” said Dr. O’Brien. “It happens to so many of us – once we start feeling like we’ve been stretched too thin, even minor stressors and emotional stimulants become exaggerated in our minds. It’s especially important to take care of yourself mentally, physically and emotionally during busy times of the year.” Making small lifestyle changes or setting boundaries can make a world of difference in staying positive and energized during the holidays. Ways to do this include: • Pace yourself – decide what needs to be done immediately and what can be put off for a day or two • Be realistic about the number of commitments you can handle • Find holiday events and activities that are free to give your wallet some relief. Bonus points if they can serve as family bonding activities, too • Limit alcohol consumption, as alcohol is a natural depressant and can exaggerate depressed feelings • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to others when possible Feelings of stress, anxiety, or depression vary by individual – as do available coping mechanisms. Novant Health UVA Health System offers both inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services for assistance in dealing with mental health challenges. If you or a loved one is in need of support, visit novanthealthuva.org/services/behavioralhealth.aspx or call 703-369-8055, option 1. If you think you may hurt yourself or someone else, call 911 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, or visit the nearest emergency room immediately. ❖

Oh, Christmas Tree
Types of Christmas Trees
BY EMILY CHILDRESS
P
icking out and decorating the Christmas tree is arguably one of the most beloved holiday traditions. In fact, it’s right up there with leaving cookies out for Santa. But did you know that the tradition of decorating trees dates back hundreds of years and that there’s an incredible variety of firs, pines, and spruces from which to choose? Well it does and there are! Read on for a brief history of the Christmas tree and a look at the pros and cons of several of the most popular types. And don’t miss the link at the end of this feature. Use it to find your perfect tree at a Christmas tree farm near you.
History of the Christmas Tree Evergreen trees have been important throughout history and across many cultures. During the dark times of winter when crops did not grow and the sun did not shine, evergreen boughs were often hung throughout villages as a way to represent the coming spring and the bounty it would bring. Christian Germans are first credited with the tradition of bringing decorated trees into their home, and Martin Luther (a 16th century Protestant reformer) is even believed to have started the tradition of hanging lights in trees after walking home and seeing the stars twinkle through the branches of the evergreens. America,
32
however, was quite late to the game on this one: up until the 19th century, Christmas trees were viewed as having pagan ties and most frivolous celebrations of Christmas were looked down upon. It was only when trendsetting Queen Victoria and her husband, Albert, were sketched in a comic gathered around a Christmas tree that people began to embrace the decorated evergreen tree.

BALSAM FIR Pros: These trees have a great dark-green color and pyramid shape, and they have a strong Christmas scent. Cons: The branches are flexible and as such, not great for holding up heavy ornaments. DOUGLAS FIR Pros: This common tree usually has light or bluegreen needles that won’t shed and have a sweet scent. Cons: These trees tend to be on the short and compact side, and they aren’t great at holding up heavy ornaments. FRASER FIR Pros: Fraser Firs have a strong and lasting scent and are great for holding up heavier ornaments. Cons: These trees have a dense and compact look.
NOBLE FIR Pros: This tree is classic looking and smelling, and is well equipped to hold heavy ornaments. Cons: The limbs and needles are shorter than average on this tree.
NORWAY SPRUCE Pros: The Norway Spruce is cone-shaped and carries a mild and pleasing scent throughout its gorgeous forest-green needles. Cons: This tree tends to shed its sharp needles.
WHITE FIR Pros: The soft blue-green needles carry a citrusy scent and don’t fall off easily. Cons: These trees take a long time to grow and as such, can be on the more expensive side.
WHITE SPRUCE Pros: The gray-green needles hold much better than most spruces, and this tree can also support heavier ornaments. Cons: The needles have an unpleasant odor when crushed, and the needles tend to drop off.
BLUE SPRUCE Pros: The silver-blue needles don’t shed and this tree has a wonderful symmetrical shape that can also support heavier ornaments. Cons: The needles are sharp and unscented, unless they break, in which case they will have an unpleasant smell.
SCOTS PINE Pros: This popular Christmas tree holds its needles well and has a long-lasting pine scent. Cons: The color is not as vibrant as many Christmas trees and crooked trunks are common. WHITE PINE Pros: The soft blue-green needles hold well and are best for those with sensitive noses or allergies to pine scents. This tree is very tall, which makes it great for rooms with high ceilings, and is affordable. Cons: This tree has virtually no scent and cannot support heavy ornaments. ❖

HOW DO I MAKE SURE I GET THE BEST PRICE?
DESIGN 101:
Get the Best Price for Your Home WORK WITH A REALTOR AND A STAGER BY YARON LINETT
“I’m selling my house. How do I make sure I get the best price?” “Help! I need to organize all my stuff. Where do I start?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. For the purposes of this article, we’re tackling the first one. “I’m selling my house…”

SHOULD I PAINT?
Work with a realtor. It can be tempting to try and save money on the commission, but what you don’t know can cost you far more than you save. The same concept applies to staging. A professional home stager can help you sell your house faster and for a better price than you might get by yourself. More importantly, they can help you avoid spending money on unnecessary updates or undesirable finishes. PRO TIP
Think of the property not as “your home,” but as the future buyer’s. Colors and updates you might not prefer may very well have the greatest appeal and yield the highest return on investment (ROI).
WHAT PROJECTS HAVE THE BEST ROI? The answers vary from year to year, but the top projects are almost always: repainting, refinishing flooring/ replacing carpet, and minor kitchen and bathroom remodels. Address areas that are visibly deficient. Clean, declutter, depersonalize, sanitize. These are the most critical first steps to staging. PRO TIP
Address signs of damage or deferred maintenance. The last thing you want potential buyers thinking is, “If they didn’t take care of that what else is wrong?”
WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL MY STUFF? Assuming you haven’t already moved into your new home, the bulk of your items should be getting packed. The less clutter you have around, the larger the space will look. It’s especially recommended that highly personal items be removed before showing as it’s easier for a potential buyer to imagine the space as theirs if there are no family pictures on display. Put what you don’t need on a daily basis into storage, and eliminate items you no longer want. PRO TIP
Remember, if it costs more to pack and store than to replace, consider disposing of it.
HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE
}
The short answer is yes. The long answer is this: if you’ve recently painted and by recently I mean within a year and the paint is still near pristine and it’s a neutral color that’s consistent with best staging practices, then perhaps you don’t need to. But please remember that this is about ROI and maximizing the number of bidders on your property. A good paint job will not only help it look cleaner, but will help restore that “new house smell.” If you’re unsure a room needs to be painted, remove pictures, mirrors, and other wall hangings. If the color has faded beneath them, paint. PRO TIP
DO I NEED TO STAGE WITH FURNITURE? The main benefit of staging with furniture is to help the potential buyer visualize the use of space. Bringing in furniture can help, but so too can “virtual staging,” whereby an artist renders an image that can be displayed in the room and online. Ultimately it comes down to ROI. How much will it cost to bring in furniture, and how long will you pay to have it there? PRO TIP
Start with consultative staging and once the painting, cleaning, and decluttering is completed, consider this option.

Pampered Empowered Ashley Turner redefines beauty at Little Diva’s Day Spa STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
I
f you were to interview each business owner in our local area, you’d find that many of them have motivations and passions that encompass so much more than meets the eye. Ashley Turner, owner of Little Diva’s Day Spa, is no exception. Determined to make a difference in the lives of the both the girls who come in to be pampered and the employees doing the pampering, Turner is making her mark in our community. Prior to owning Little Diva’s, Turner and her 12-year-old daughter Leah ran a mobile kids spa, bringing their pampering and primping to the community one party at a time. But once business started picking up, Turner found Little Diva’s a goodsized spot in the back of the same building as Foster’s Grille and CMC Music Center in Haymarket. From its new, non-mobile space, Turner pursues her passion of not just pampering but empowering the young clients who come to Little Diva’s. Her goal is for the girls who visit the spa to leave feeling beautiful on the outside and, more importantly, on the inside. She points out that

our youth are seeing more and more adults altering their appearance online, via filters and apps like Beauty Plus, and the result is that young girls are having a tougher time than ever before learning to love themselves for who they are. “I want them to define their own version of beauty,” says Turner who often will have each partygoer create her own acronym from the word B-E-A-U-T-Y. For example, she encourages them to use words like bold, enjoyable, unique, and talented as descriptors of themselves. Turner wasn’t even aware of what kind of difference she was making at first but, at one party, a little girl revealed that she had been being bullied and had thoughts of suicide. She ended up leaving the party feeling validated and hugging Turner and her new friends. Turner says she wants every little girl she encounters to redefine her narrative and think of themselves in ways other than just how they look. But to take even further her goal of empowering others, Turner has assumed a less primary role in

running the spa. When she interviews prospective employees, she seeks out those with a heart for empowering little girls and the desire to be a business owner in the future. Anyone who seeks employment has to fill out an application, like any other job, but the difference is that the application focuses more on character than on work history and experience. Those Turner hires become her partner and run the business to train and hone their skills by playing the role of “manager of the day.” “These women play a huge role in the success of Little Diva’s,” Turner says, and she knows the spa is in good hands with her carefully chosen crew. In training her team, Turner emphasizes positive interactions and being aware that some of the girls visiting the spa might not have an ideal home life and things might not be going well when they come in, but that they should feel changed when they leave. “This is so much more than a job,” Turner says. When asked what she would like people to know about Little Diva’s Day Spa, Turner says, “That this is a safe place in the community for moms and daughters to be transformed on the outside and the inside.” During the week and on weekends, clients can visit by appointment only and if your little diva would like to host a birthday party – at which her guests can enjoy spa packages that include pedicures, manicures, hairdos, and makeup– look no further than Little Diva’s. For further information and to book appointments and parties, visit LittleDivasDaySpa.com. Your little one will leave feeling pretty and empowered. And that’s beautiful. ❖

I admit, I thought the same thing, and humbly admit, as I hang my head, that I was proven dead wrong when I had the pleasure of speaking with Gainesville native and USA Miss National Teen 2018 winner Julianna Corsi. Julianna educated me on all things pageantrelated and why the endeavor is really a positive one for young women. I could have spoken with Julianna, or Jules, as she’s called by friends and family, all day. In the fifth grade she received a letter from National American Miss and didn’t have any interest, but later learned that a good friend participated and so enjoyed meeting girls outside Gainesville, and learning skills most kids don’t know about at that age, that her interest was piqued. When she received the letter again in the sixth grade, she gave it a go. Over the next six years, Julianna competed in various pageants at the state and national level. In 2012, she won 2nd Runner Up, Preteen Division Virginia. Two years later, she won 4th Runner Up, Junior Teen Division Virginia. In 2016, she won the Virginia Teen Division, went on to the National competition in California and made the Top 10 in the United States. She also placed in three additional competitions: First Runner up: Most Promising Model, First Runner up: Runway Model, and Fourth Runner Up: Top Model. Last year, she competed at the USA National Miss pageant and won District of Columbia Teen. From there she traveled to Boca Raton for Nationals and placed Top 15 in the US and was named Supermodel 2017.
An enviable runway modeling career took off in 2017 when Julianna walked in both New York Fashion Week and DC Fashion Week. This past year, she competed at USA National Miss again as Old Dominion Teen in an appointed title after winning the Model of the Year contest. In July, she won the National Teen Title in Orlando and also won Supermodel 2018. She also won the Ashley Lauren Runway Modeling competition and walked for her this September in New York Fashion Week. That’s a lot of trophies for sure, but awards aren’t the benefit of competing in pageants. Both Julianna and her mom, Lisa, say that the greatest benefit of competing

in pageants is the self-confidence it builds in young women. And the self-confidence lessons imparted aren’t merely about beauty, rather they help the girls understand who they are, discover their character, and teach them how to live authentically. Lisa and Jules’ dad, Vincent, happily followed their daughter’s lead throughout the entire process, excited she’d be coached in public speaking and interviewing, lifelong skills that will help her in any situation. “It’s been an amazing journey watching Jules grow in these areas,” Lisa said. In addition to building confidence and coaching pageant participants in a variety of skills, pageants teach girls the importance of volunteer work and being active in their community. In that vein, Julianna’s personal platform is called “Kindness is Power,” and one extension of it is her Kindness Book Club. Borne out of her sister’s career as a teacher, and the stories she shared with Julianna about the unkind situations she experienced with kids in her class, Julianna realized she had a platform on which to speak to others and teach what she’s learned along her journey. She hopes to continue with her platform even outside of the pageant circuit and has coined the hashtag #kindnessispower. Sydney Hatcher, one of Julianna’s coaches said, “Julianna is a wellrounded young woman with a mature
sense of who she is and the impact she can make on the world. Julianna’s future is bright, but she never allows that brightness to outshine the importance of her family and her heart-song. I look forward to watching Julianna continue to uplift and challenge every person she meets.” Julianna’s pageant career helped her outline what her future will look like. She became interested journalism and when she had the opportunity to write a piece called “Breaking Stereotypes” for the book Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Pageantry by Jackie B. Watson, National Director for USA National Miss. Julianna’s passage details the realistic possibility of competing against others, while still maintaining your integrity and character, and forming a bond with others in the process. She also writes about the very topic of this article, breaking the negative stereotype of pageants and those who compete in them. She learned the
former firsthand, when she developed a close bond with two fellow competitors from Florida and Texas. They became such good friends that they don’t go a day without speaking or texting. Julianna will attend Boston University in January. She chose a track that begins by studying abroad in London and while she’s still undetermined about her major, whether it will be in journalism or meteorology, if you ask this writer, she’ll someday combine both beautifully. Brains, beauty, eloquence, and kindness – an amazing combination of qualities that make up a remarkable young woman. Julianna Corsi is set to soar, breaking stereotypes as her future unfolds.❖

Cham pagn e The grandest singular symbol of all occasions deemed special BY MARK LUNA
A
s 2018 comes to a close, one final beginning lurks: winter officially arrives on Friday, December 21st. With the new season and new year ‘round the corner, it’s only fitting that we honor both the farewell and greeting with one last round of special bottles. For it’s worth being reminded that no matter how short the days or long the nights ahead, there’s always a good reason to celebrate, through one of the oldest and most coveted creations of all time: wine. Certainly since the 17th and 18th century days of Dom Perignon and Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (Veuve Cliquot), two historic

individuals who are synonymous with Champagne (the region), champagne (the wine) has been the grandest singular symbol of all occasions deemed special. Their respective contributions to the process of making champagne are vinification benchmarks that, to this day, are present in numerous sparkling wines of both the old and new world, including Cava from Spain and Franciacorta, from Italy. For this last issue of the year, I’ve chosen to celebrate a few families who, for generations, have been producing great champagne. These are people who at the end of the day are family farmers, creators

of something timeless and magical, born of hard work, shared responsibilities and a collective, generational effort to offer one thing that everyone can experience, enjoy and celebrate. In Champagne, there are two predominant varietals, chardonnay and pinot noir. If you’ve ever heard of Blanc de Blanc (white wine from white grapes) or Blanc de Noir (white from red), that’s where that comes from. A third varietal, the black grape pinot meunier, is often used as a blending component, mostly in mass-produced wines, adding fruitiness and youthfulness. In the upper and highest quality levels of champagne, you have Premier (1er) Cru and Grand Cru; and these wines come from the most exclusive grape growing sites in the world, producing the best champagnes in the world. More often than not, these tiny plots are owned by families who’ve been there for generations, both as farmers and producers. As I wrote back in May, a grower champagne producer makes wine exclusively and solely grown from their own estate. It’s the best. I love a great wine at a great price. And when it comes to Blanc de Blanc champagne, my personal favorite, there’s truly no greater value in the world than Chapuy. Champagne Chapuy is a family estate of about 18 acres of vineyards, and they’ve been growing grapes there for over 100 years. Located in the tiny Grand Cru village of Oger, the family is permanently linked to their village’s history, as one of its ancestors was mayor
of the village after the French Revolution. Though wine growing is in the family lineage, predating production, it was Serge Chapuy who was the actual brand creator and started to commercialize Chapuy champagne in 1952. Today, his son Arnold runs the estate with his two grandchildren, Elodie and Aurore. Chapuy Grand Cru BdB is a beautiful wine, 100% chardonnay, matured on its lees in the bottle (“sur lattes”) for over 2 years, with additional aging after disgorging (yeast removal, reserve wine added and re-corking). Yellow-gold in color, with aromas of biscuit, baked apple and citrus, it’s a delicate wine, yet rich and full with boundless fruit and energy. Small, penetrating bubbles that seemingly never end let you know that only the highest quality of fruit is used; and with only 3500 cases produced per year, the exclusivity of it all resonates. What’s really incredible though is the price, an absolute steal at less than $45. And as the family’s estate motto goes, “A premium quality Champagne at an owner price”. What Oger is to Blanc de Blanc, Verzenay is to Blanc de Noir, champagne that’s made exclusively from pinot noir. Patrick Arnould is a 5th generation winemaker, and his family owns 28 acres of vineyards in Verzenay, planted with 80% pinot noir and 20% chardonnay. The Michel-Arnould Brut Grand Cru NV is pure Blanc de Noir and considered by many the champ of Verzenay. And to speak of the family’s greatness when it comes to grape growing, any extra fruit that Arnould has left, after his wine is produced, is also sold exclusively to Bollinger. They also know greatness when they see it. Production is less than 8500 cases per year, very exclusive. As for the Michel-Arnould Brut Grand Cru NV wine itself, the pale gold color
illuminates a thick stream of creamy bubbles. A rich nose filled with notes of yellow peach, cassis and chalk creates a palate that’s voluminous and resplendent with perfect fruit. The finish is citrusy and times out exceptionally well. This wine is best suited as an aperitif, or an elevated accompaniment to pork tenderloin, with maybe apricots or a fruitcake. And again, like the Chapuy, it’s remarkably priced, at about $45. And finally, no champagne collection would be complete without rose’. As is sometimes the case, rose’ champagnes are produced with both pinot noir and chardonnay; and my wine of choice here follows suit. Produced by one of the great growers in the Grand Cru village of Ay, Gatinois Champagne Brut Rose Grand Cru NV is a jewel in the crown of grower champagne. Pierre Cheval Gatinois can trace back his winemaking heritage 11 generations, and he is currently the President of the Grower’s Association in Champagne. He owns 17 acres of vineyards, divided up into 29 different parcels, predominantly pinot noir, with a small plot of chardonnay. As stated, the rose’ is a blend, 90% pinot noir, 10% chardonnay. Total production is just 4200 cases per year. His techniques
are timeless, as there’s no inoculation - only naturally occurring yeast starts the fermentation. Also, there is no oak used. As Pierre says, “Oak is an artifice that everyone uses today to make something different, yet they all end up making something very similar!” And like MichelArnould, any remaining fruit that Pierre doesn’t use is sold exclusively to his next-door neighbor, Bollinger (and they only use it for their Tete de Cuvee, Grand Anne’). Starting to see a trend here? Now you know what really makes Bollinger so valued. Rest assured, neither Patrick Arnould nor Pierre Gatinois are selling better fruit to Bollinger. The best is in their champagne only. Gatinois Champagne Brut Rose Grand Cru NV is a gorgeous wine, with intense salmon-colored hues. Elegant in style, both the nose and palate offer up an abundance of red fruits, strawberries and cherries, and a dash of spice which evolves into lingering notes of blackberries and Morello cherries on the very rich finish. This is a food wine, no doubt, perfect for the holidays, perfect for an end of year toast. Priced closer to $60, this is an exclusive rose’ champagne, worthy of a large and meaningful celebration. It’s been a wonderful wine year, and I would like to thank all of you who have read my columns and responded with great enthusiasm to the wines I’ve been privileged to present. I’d like to also extend my sincere thanks to my esteemed colleague and friend, Tom Bjornsen, for his contributions to this month’s column. I look forward to introducing many more new and great wines in 2019, and wish you all a wonderful Holiday season, full of great wines and family traditions… until next year, Happy Vino-ing! ❖

CAUTION: CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS
Did you know? Picking up online orders at the Walmart in Haymarket will soon be easier. Thanks to a recent permit issued by the County, the retailer at 6530 Trading Square will be making improvements that will make the lives of online shoppers easier. Other local commercial permits include Bonchon at 7344 Atlas Walk Way, Gainesville; Zoe’s Kitchen at 5035 Wellington Road, Gainesville; Code Ninja Computer Learning at 7543 Somerset Crossing Drive, Gainesville; and Gainesville Holistic Health Center at 7528 Old Linton Hall Road, Gainesville. Now that’s a lot of improvements!
Commuters on Interstate 66 are dodging construction zones and sitting in heavy traffic while they wait for the new I-66 Express Lanes that will eventually provide a toll/HOV option. The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project will add: two express lanes in each direction along a 22.5-mile stretch from Interstate 495 to near University Boulevard in Gainesville AND 4,000plus new commuter parking spaces in Prince William.
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Frankly, we haven’t spotted any lions or tigers, thank goodness, but bears? Oh yes. In the last few weeks, bear sightings have been reported in several Haymarket and Gainesville neighborhoods. To deal with the hungry creatures, Prince William Animal Control Bureau has offered the following tips and suggestions, including: removing food sources that might attract bears, not storing trash in vehicles or on porches or decks, and consider installing electric fencing around dumpsters, gardens, beehives or other potential food sources.
New school bus facility in Gainesville gets going Prince William County Public Schools has started construction on a new school bus transportation facility in Gainesville. Work began following a groundbreaking in October. Transportation Services staff at the new facility will assist with control of 180 buses out of the 800-plus that travel Prince William roads daily; maintain contact with fire, rescue and police; and answer calls from potentially 20,000 parents, 33 schools and 150,000 residents. Route managers will supervise 45 to 60 bus drivers and attendants who transport 5,800 students. "Along with the priority of student safety is the need to keep our bus fleet, and all our vehicles, well maintained," said Superintendent Steve Walts.

AND SO BEGINS THE TAIL OF 200 PORTABLE TRAILERS Prince William County Public Schools uses more than 200 portable trailers to teach students across the county. After more than a year of considering how to reduce that number, elected officials have developed a $143.2 million plan that will eliminate them by 2027. A joint meeting of the school board and the county board of supervisors was expected to consider the proposal Nov. 27. “I believe this November meeting is going to be the starting point,” said Gainesville District Supervisor Pete Candland. “We’ve gathered the information as much as we could and now we’re providing it to the two boards, and it’s going to start the discussion.” Follow along at insidenova.com/news/education.
