I returned home from the war in Europe in April, 1946. No one on the ship had been overseas less than two years. It was a strange feeling going back across the same waters on which we had watched destroyers protecting us and had watched for signs of submarines. Each of the ships carrying “our boys” home left singly and as quickly as possible so that peace time activities could replace the craziness of the last four years. I was on a Liberty Ship. They were not built for comfort. We would stand in the prow of the ship watching it rise up on the crest of a wave. The wave would disappear leaving a space and the ship would crash downward making the whole vessel shudder throughout its length. The scuttlebutt was that the Captain told someone who told someone else that he intended to resign upon arriving at port – that he would not continue to guide a “death ship.” We found it ironic that we had survived a horrible war in the name of freedom and now might die on the way home in a ship symbolizing “liberty.” We passed the icebergs – we passed the Azores – and then an announcement came from the Captain over the public address system. We were going to land in New York Harbor. New York!! America!! Home!! Who was the person who coined that ridiculous statement: “I hate to see a grown man cry?” Have you ever seen a thousand men cry? All at the same time? And no one ashamed?

Homecoming 1946 As I said, no one on that ship had been home for more than two years. On that ship were men who had not seen their wives, children, family members or girlfriends in that period of time. There were also men who had received “Dear John” letters letting them know that they had former wives and sweethearts and that there might be no one waiting for them. Nevertheless, America would be waiting for them and for this they were grateful. GIs gathered in knots on the deck and below talking about nothing else. Because we were landing in New York, we knew we would pass the Statue of Liberty, the emblem that symbolized all for which we had been fighting. By God, we showed Hitler!! We had won over that type of tyranny and as we passed that Lady with the upheld torch, we were going to let out a cheer like you wouldn’t believe.
There we were, thousands of battle-hardened, some wounded, ordinarily foul-mouthed veterans standing on the deck, looking upward – and not a sound. Not a sound!! It was possible to hear the rush of the water past the ship. I looked around me and saw war-wrinkled faces with tears streaming down them. I say “saw” but it was most difficult because of my own tears. Ever so slowly as the ship passed the Statue, individual soldiers slowly drifted away to their own hammocks and into their own thoughts. No talking, just an eerie silence as the ship moved into the mouth of the Hudson River and on to peace.
The day arrived. We entered the lower harbor and, faintly in the distance the Statue of Liberty could be seen. Our speed slowed and as we approached the Statue, everyone, repeat everyone, gathered topside. I don’t know who was in the galleys or lying in hammocks below, if anyone, but the deck was a mass of brown uniforms, all their wearers looking in one direction. It was late afternoon, the sun was setting over New Jersey, and now the moment for cheering had come. We were slowly passing under the Statue.

ost people don’t experience one round of basic FAUQUIER training. Evan Sippert, a six FAMILY year military veteran, went SHELTER through two. However, when Sippert services for the homeless showed up for his second time, the circumstances were far different. Sippert was not being prepared for combat, he was being prepared for life. Looking back on his time spent at Vint Hill Transitional Housing, a two-year program aimed at helping people gain stable housing during times of uncertainty, those same two words, basic training, were the first that came to his mind. “It’s financial basic training,” Sippert said. “The program is as effective as the people who join it. It isn’t for the faint of heart.” Sippert, poised to graduate from the transitional housing program at the end of June, will be purchasing his first home and living with his three children in Culpeper. But there was a time when this scenario seemed unlikely at best. Before entry into the Vint Hill Transitional Housing Program, Sippert was drifting around the Warrenton area, bouncing between the couches of friends and family with a credit rating so low he could not rent an apartment. Although Sippert held a job with Verizon, debt was piling up and he was unsure of where to turn next. Then, on a nostalgic drive through the former military base where he spent his final year of high school as a military brat, Sippert came across a sign that would change the direction of his life. “I saw the sign that read ‘Vint Hill Transitional Housing,’ and at the time anything that said housing was definitely something worth looking into.” He inquired about the program and soon began building his financial packet with workers at Vint Hill, outlining his cash flow and creating a budget. Once he established a positive cash flow in December of 2007 – be it only twenty dollars in the black – he moved in. Now, two and a half years later, Sippert is the head of one of six families who have purchased or are in the late stages of purchasing a home after graduation in the last three months. Director of Fauquier Family Shelter Services Inc., which administers the VH program, Ed Childress, says the recent economic downturn has provided a golden opportunity for 10
some people in the program to purchase a home. “It’s interesting that we cry over the horrible economy, yet it’s had this weird benefit for people willing to work hard and save their money and increase their earning potential,” Childress said. “The fact that we have six families in an economy like this that have changed their circumstances is huge.” During the housing boom of this decade, housing became unaffordable for the vast majority of people in the Vint Hill Transitional Housing Program. “Until recently housing prices were out of sight,” Childress said. “No one was able to purchase a home.” The Vint Hill Transitional Housing Program’s main objective is to help their clients form good spending habits and earn enough money for a down payment on a house or security deposit and first month’s rent on an apartment. “They want to facilitate a person’s eventual move into regular housing,” Sippert said. “They teach what it takes to buy or rent a home and provide a place to accomplish your goals while you get back on your feet.” To qualify for the program, one must be in one of the following situations: in the process of eviction, living in a shelter, or living with family or friends in crowded conditions. Clients must also have custody of children under the age of 18, full-time employment for at least 30 days, and a working vehicle. During one’s participation, one must maintain their full time employment, learn budget skills, pay down debt, clean up credit, attend financial classes at Vint Hill and supervise the well-being of their children. Whether it’s the emergency shelter, a playground to keep the young ones entertained, life skills classes for the grown ups, or the transitional housing at Vint Hill, at Fauquier Family Shelter Services, Inc., there is help for every need.

enough stress to break-up a marriage or relationship.” Clients are usually recommended to the Fauquier Free Clinic to receive medical treatment. Employees of the shelter also look for additional government benefits an individual may qualify for. The shelter supplies food for its tenants through donations from the community and community organizations. “The community is wonderful,” said shelter coordinator Sue Smith. “There are at least four churches per month that bring meals to residents.” While less than half of Fauquier Family Shelter Services’ income is in the form of government grants, the rest is well distributed amongst families, churches, businesses, clubs, foundations and the United Way. One of the biggest factors in the lives of the displaced is the people working to help them every day. “I love my job,” Smith said. “This is the best job I could ever have. By helping others you also help yourself. I go home feeling very fortunate.”
With continued outreach from the community and support from employees, Fauquier Family Shelter Services looks toward the future with optimism and hope, to turn out more success stories like Evan Sippert, who has raised his credit rating significantly since his entry into transitional housing in 2007. “I’m kind of taking it step by step,” Sippert said. “There are still things on my credit history I’d like to get cleaned up. But if I keep making regular payments, that will improve.” Through the transitional program, Sippert is well on the way to the life he wants for himself and his children. “It’s tough to do, but it’s well worth it,” Sippert said. “Things are lighter than when I came in. must pay a small fee to live on the premises and participate. For homeless Fauquier County residents who do not meet the requirements of the Vint Hill program, a shelter, located on Keith Street in Old Town Warrenton, offers temporary housing for displaced families and a few individuals. The family shelter, opened in 1988, has 52 beds and includes several private family living quarters to accommodate large families. It also has a large kitchen and eating area, living room, as well as a game and video room and playground for children living in the shelter. During chaotic times, the shelter strives to maintain a degree of normalcy in the lives of the displaced. However, residents must function within the rules of the shelter to continue to stay there. No drug use or drinking is permitted on or off the property. Residents who are employed must continue to hold their job, while those who are not must be in search of employment until they are hired. Everyone is expected to be gone everyday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents must also complete chores around the shelter to earn their stay. “It gives them a structure they can work within,” Childress said. “If you know what the expectations are, usually you can work within the expectations and be productive.” To gain admittance to the shelter, one must have a valid photo I.D. and pass a background check. Common circumstances surrounding someone becoming homeless include loss of job or mounting medical expenses. “Our residents often have no health insurance to cover the cost of an illness or injury,” Childress said. “Out of pocket medical expenses can cause

Native born Virginians – and those who have settled here – realize quite quickly how prevalent is the sense of history that envelops the Commonwealth. In Fauquier County, for example, one is barely an hour’s drive from the homes of the first, third, fourth and fifth presidents of the United States. Add the numerous nearby battlefields to the mix, and history isn’t just something that appears in books, it’s omnipresent. Yet there is a history of the area that has been notable for its absence, both from history books and from common knowledge. That is the history of African Americans, and local author Karen Hughes White – with two other co-authors – has set about to change that with a new book titled “African Americans of Fauquier County.” White, who has lived in Fauquier County all her life – with the exception of when she was a licensed Practical Nurse – is a co-founder of the African American Historical Association of Fauquier County. “We founded the Association in 1992, and we opened this museum here in The Plains in 1997,” White said. The Fauquier native said that, as she went through life here, she noticed something missing. “I didn’t see my place in history, especially going through schools,” White said, “and I really felt that history was so great and powerful, and this [research for the book] enabled me to see not only myself, but my entire family ... how they lived, what they did, how they survived.”
Photo album “African Americans of Fauquier County” is chock full of photos and copies of legal documents from as far back as the early 1800s up until the mid 1960s. It was a work of dedication and love for White and her co-authors, Donna Taylor Hollie and Brett M. Tyler. The book duplicates court documents that verified that former slaves had achieved their freedom, an important fact to be substantiated as freed people without official documents could be captured and sold back into slavery.
George Tyler was born in 1800 and died in 1903. His wife, Marjorie Chapman, was born in 1808 and died in 1905. Both were slaves of the Boteler/George family. They were the parents of 14 children and saw five of them sold away during slavery. After the war, they were farmers and active members of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Midland. Many of their descendants still reside in Fauquier.
The book shows newspaper ads that promised rewards for anyone who found and returned runaway slaves. “The Underground Railroad came through here,” White stated. “Fauquier County is awash in so much history.” And there are ton of photos – some from archives, many more from family photo albums – that show Fauquier citizens at school, at work and at play. women serving in the military, kids playing sports, couples getting married. The book reveals a snapshot of life in a community often overlooked at the time. Many of the photos are of people who still have relatives living in the county. “It’s really interesting,” White said. “They had a record out here within the families who still live here. We had had the idea for the book for awhile. We came up with the photos. They all had to be original. We had to rescan all the photos.” Ask any historian, and they can probably come up with a myriad of people now long gone that they would have liked to have met. It is the same with White. “I would have liked to know Doug Ford,” she admitted. “Ford – born in 1841 – is my relative. He was born in the Free State, and he was a free man, but he talked about what it was like to be a slave. I would have liked to talk to him. He died in 1915. “And I would have liked to have met Spencer Hall,” she continued. “He was extremely powerful. He refused to do anything the Confederacy asked him to do. He was born in 1811, and we think that he may have helped slaves escape on the Underground Railroad.” White said that she when she started her research, it impacted her life in different ways. “When I first started, every time I would go to a quiet area – a stream, say or the woods – I would wonder whether that place had been part of the escape route for slaves trying to be free.” The book has been published by
Charles and Mamie Bland started the Black and Gold Restaurant in March 1936. A few years later, Mamie, who was born in Upperville, took over the business, which was located on Second Street in Warrenton. The Black and Gold Inn was a place where people could not only dress up and have a good time, they could also enjoy a full-course, delicious meal. The inn even offered rooms for rent above the restaurant, an important feature during the era of segregation, when African Americans were excluded from places of public accommodation. After 40 years of serving the public, Mrs. Bland decided to close, an act that saddened the African American community. 16
Arcadia Publishing, part of a series of books with a similar theme that is titled “The Images of America.” The series purports to celebrate the history of neighborhoods, towns and cities across America. Proceeds from the sale of the book are going to the African American Historical Association of Fauquier County. The driving force “I’m very interested in genealogy and history,” White explained. “I’m trying to make people aware of history and their contributions.” The author said that it was almost by happenstance that she became interested in the subject material. “My grandmother’s first cousin was having a birthday party, and we went to the cookout,” she explained, “and Karen Lavore – the other co-founder of the African American Historical Association of Fauquier County – showed what she was doing in terms of family history, and I really became interested. Once you get started researching your family genealogy, you get the bug, and I’ve been wearing my family out with family history
Chauncy DePew Brown and Georgia Lucinda White married on January 18, 1922, in Washington, D.C., and made their home in the Frytown community of Warrenton. Chauncy, a musician, performed throughout the Piedmont area of Virginia and in Washington, D.C. Life magazine, the Washington Post, and the Fauquier Democrat wrote stories about him. He also had the opportunity to play with Duke Ellington. Chauncy was known for playing “Sweet Georgia Brown” in loving admiration of his wife Georgia Brown. She was the daughter of Joshua W. and Roberta Clark White. Georgia was educated in the Warrenton public school system and was active in many civic and charitable organizations.
The Negro Organization Society was created by Booker T. Washington in 1912. Its purpose was to encourage collective action among southern African Americans and to solve problems that resulted from racism and discrimination. This 1940 photograph, taken at an NOS workshop at First Baptist Church in Manassas, Virginia, includes many Fauquier residents: Thomas Chapman Tyler, Rev. Joseph Hackett, Sandy Gibson, Lydia Arnold, Esther Williams Tyler, and LuRue Thompson Fox Gaskins.

ever since.” White said that she had grown up in a Fauquier community that was separated along racial lines. Even so, life was simpler. “Growing up, we were very sheltered from the world by my parents,” she explained. “One time, when I was older, someone shouted a racial slur at me, and I had no idea what the word meant.” She attended segregated public schools. “I’m 56,” she said. “We went to segregated schools until 1969-70, and then we had to decide. I could have gone to Taylor High School, which was the high school for blacks, or to Fauquier High School. I chose to go to Taylor because my sister had gone there. “In terms of race relations, Fauquier County has always been a more subtle place,” she added. “There was a subtle thing about knowing what line that you could cross and what line you couldn’t cross.” Teach the children “I’ve always encouraged my children to read,” White said. “I didn’t want them to miss their opportunities. Fauquier’s history needs to be broadened. There is a lack of African American history in the public schools, and we need to change that.” White said that writing the book was “fun and stressful.” “It was stressful because we were trying to finish it last year, and we had Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s all happening while we were trying to finish. “The fun part is realizing that this is a publication about Fauquier County that is going to live in history. Places, events, people ... this is a tribute to those who came before us all.” Her experience with the association for which she works led her to believe that the book will find an audience. “I just felt that there was such a need to make people aware of another part of the history of the county,” she said. “Our main focus is Fauquier County. We want all children coming through the door [of the association] to be reading that they have a place here in Fauquier County, that there were others that came before them, and that they belong. We encourage people to preserve their family history. We would like to be their backup. We want to see the history preserved.” White said that other volumes may follow this one. “This is a small part of what we are doing. This is the beginning of the publications,” she declared. “Fauquier County people have been extremely generous of their time, energy and their memories and their photographs,” she added. “But as much as we’ve done, I still feel that there is so much more out there. When you think about how many people were here, and how quickly they left here, it makes you want to research everything while there still is time.”

e have been busy here in Old Town Warrenton this summer but still have a calendar full of happenings yet to come! We are sad to see a couple merchants leave Main Street. John Elsie, Edgar Snowden Rugs, will be missed as he enjoys retirement. Rob Fleming and Laura Hoffman, Crescendo Bistro, will certainly be missed. As we are sad to see these businesses leave Old Town, we are excited to welcome Todd Eisenhauer and his new restaurant that will be opening at 32 Main Street. Todd has been part of the Old Town community for years and we welcome him to Main Street. We are excited to say Happy 85th Birthday to the Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department! Main Street was their original home. The fire company began with little more than a bucket brigade and manpulled hose wagon under the steps of the Old Courthouse on Main Street. Eventually, the Fire Department built a fire house on Main Street, the now yellow building at the corner of Main and N 4th Streets and the home of Village Flowers. In 1976, the new building on West Shirley Avenue was completed and to this day, has remained their home. July 3rd is a First Friday and we are having a Birthday Party to celebrate 85 years! The Fire Department will be on Main Street with all of their fire equipment on hand for children of all ages to enjoy! They will be handing out fire helmets to children and selling hot dogs! The Carousel Ice Cream Truck will be selling ice cream with proceeds going to the Fire Department. Dance to the sounds

of the Shields Brothers Band. Bring a towel as we will have a water sprinkler hooked up to a fire hydrant for the children to cool off and play. July 4th is Historic Old Town Warrenton’s 18th Annual Partnership for Warrenton’s Independence Day Parade for Children and Pets. The parade lineup begins at 9:30am and the parade will begin at 10am. No motorized vehicles permitted. The Fauquier Community Band will be performing at the Old Courthouse while Uncle Sam and the Northern Piedmont Caledonia Pipe and Drum Band lead the march of over 800 children! There will be fire trucks to climb aboard, treats for the pets and ice cream for the children following the parade. Old Town Warrenton certainly has something to offer everyone. Have family visiting? Fourth Floor Expansion Debuts 11 New Rooms Visitors to Fauquier Hospital’s fourth floor will now find there’s more to love – 11 rooms more. After eight months of construction, the big, beautiful rooms on 4 West are ready to host patients. Before the addition, the hospital hosted 86 beds, plus 33 Emergency Department beds. Rodger Baker, president and CEO of Fauquier Health, was enthusiastic about the addition. “The single-patient rooms are large and well-equipped. They are designed to look and feel like hotel suites, rather than traditional hospital rooms. Each room has a comfortable couch that folds out for family members to stay overnight and a spacious bathroom with walk-in shower. We have tried to think of everything that a patient or family member might need.”

Why did Fauquier Health need more rooms? Linda Sharkey, Vice-President of Patient Services, said, “In 2007 we had a large increase in our patient volumes; the hospital was running at 85-95 percent capacity. Typically, you would expect that the hospital would run around 80 percent. This increase caused delays in admissions, boarding patients and even doubling up rooms, leading to patient and staff dissatisfaction. “The expansion will definitely improve patient flow. During our peak census times we have been typically 10 to 14 beds ‘short.’ ” Of course, the process of adding beds was more complicated than putting up walls and picking out colors. Sharkey explained, “We submitted a certificate of public need (COPN) to the state along with our bed utilization statistics, 20

By Jennifer Hey ns For a word that wasn’t even around ten years ago, blog is the new black. Everybody seems to have one and they come in numerous styles and fashions. Literally, it’s a contraction for web log. In reality, it’s a web site or page on a site where the owner can do pretty much anything they want and expose it to the World Wide Web. It’s a great outlet for news, sports, cooking, crafts or just saying whatever’s on your mind. As a freelance writer, I typically don’t get paid to say whatever’s on my mind, which is why I started blogging. Although I love the challenges of my paid assignments, I like to write humorous accounts of life, marriage and parenting. So I started my own blog and every week I dose out a little life humor. My posts are written by my liberal alter ego, Adivah Israel, on www.domesticadivah.blogspot.com. Being completely unaware of how to start a blog (and because I’m a tightwad), I went with a free site and template at Blogger. It was so simple even I could do it. The biggest challenge was the layout and determining how to customize it as I began to figure out the “stuff” that I wanted on my site. Everyone said it was easy to put widgets and gadgets on my site, but I had serious doubts. Honestly, though, once I figured it out, it really was easy. For beginners, I highly recommend treating your favorite blogger buddy to lunch at a wi-fi spot and setting up a site together. My biggest thrill with blogging, and I’m sure many bloggers will agree, is receiving comments on my site and watching the number of site visitors climb. While being able to say whatever the heck I want without getting edited, cut or killed (writer lingo for “we’re not running your stinkin’ article”) is immensely gratifying, knowing that there are people reading my stuff and enjoying it is priceless. I may even be addicted to the concept— in addition to my own site, I also blog for CalFinder.com about home remodeling, and BlissfullyDomestic.com about health and green living. As it turned out, her accounts of life on the farm were the talk of the town up north and the emails were passed around like hot potatoes until a friend told her to set up a blog where everyone could look at her latest laments in one place…so she did: www.susanmccorkindale.com. “My whole goal in life is to make people laugh,” says Susan. “Blogging gives me one more opportunity to do that.” Her old friends enjoy her hilarious blog posts and her new friends (including me) get a kick out of seeing what she thinks of us and the life we’ve grown accustomed to. While she’s super at splitting sides and is always articulate through alliteration, Susan admits that she’s not a quick writer and her biggest challenge is posting often enough to keep her site from getting “stale”. I think Susan and I can agree that a lot of our blogging inspiration comes from our very talented and funny friend, Kimberley Petro. Kim is possibly the smartest blogger I’ve ever met. She makes it all look completely effortless. She started with a free blog site through Blogger four years ago “to be read and to be funny”. After a year, she decided to upgrade her site by switching to a custom domain and using a site designer to “make my blog reflect my personality”. What they came up with is the amazing www. Petroville.com. Kim has found a way to bring in a small income by using advertisements on her site and welcoming companies to send her products to review in her blog. Kim is also one of the original bloggers at DCMetroMoms.com. Kim loves the feedback from readers and says that she’s made numerous friends through her online ventures. “Since we’re all on Twitter as well, I sometimes talk to my blogging friends more than my IRL (in real life) friends. Yes, I’m kind of a geek,” she admits. And while I have never seen Kim in a rut, she says it’s one of her biggest challenges and when she feels one coming, she posts a humorous photograph or asks a silly question. “Many times the comments are more interesting than the post itself.” While Susan, Kim and I are mostly concerned with making the most fabulous funnies, familystyle, other bloggers are keeping it real with reports and commentary on happenings in different arenas. Glenn Petty and Mark Trible both have a lot to say - their chosen topic: sports. These are some guys’ guys’ blogs. Glenn, who lives in Warrenton, started by emailing his buddies hoping to give them a good chuckle by ribbing them about some of their favorite teams. The emails grew in caliber and became attached PDF files. After about two years, Glenn moved his project to Blogger and built www.todaysaccheadlines.com. His main goal was to make friends and other sports fans laugh and his site is gaining a strong following. Glenn has grown his blog to include as many sports, leagues and teams as possible, mixing musings with news. Like the majority of bloggers, he makes a very small amount of money from the ads on his blog. Peaking at 6,000 hits for one week last December, Petty’s blog averages about 300 hits per day, but like most bloggers, he has a plan to increase that to as many as 20,000 hits per day by drawing the attention of college alumni groups. “I think most bloggers just want to be heard – just like all writers want to be read,” Petty said. “It’s like teaching school, you don’t really do it for the money.” Glenn’s biggest challenge is finding time. With a full-time job, two very active children and a yearning to be on the links instead of on the Net he sometimes has difficulty finding time for his daily postings. Mark Trible (aka Tribdog), on the other hand, has a vast amount of free time for blogging and shares his site, www. resultsinconclusive.blogspot.com, with two of his Virginia Tech buddies, Tripper “T Rip” Henson and Emmett “EMT” Corboy. The three college students graduated from Fauquier High School. Two are athletes and one is a communications major but all three are avid sports fans. They take turns 28
posting on their site and do it strictly for the love of sports and the fun of exposing their thoughts and opinions. “It’s constructive, sometimes stress-relieving and we all enjoy having people see and read our opinions,” says Mark. The challenge is in promoting the blog and attracting new fans. Drawing new readers isn’t always a blogger’s main concern. Some people blog to keep in touch with friends and family who yearn for a glimpse into the lives of people they love and miss. One blogger from Delaplane (who shall remain nameless - you know who you are, girl!) started her blog, www.ladybugxing. blogspot.com, “to not have to write a Christmas letter every year.” She remains anonymous on her site in an effort to thwart privacy issues her family might face. Ladybug started her Blogger site for free but now makes a little money doing product reviews through MomCentral. com. She simply receives products, tries them out and blogs about them on her site. Charlene Dempsey of Warrenton started her blog, www.cmdempsey.blogspot.com, to keep connected with family, “mostly grandparents who live in New York that wanted to give us a webcam as a gift to allow them to check in on their grandkids every now and then. I felt this would be a better way to let them know what we’ve been up to, allow me to cut the cost of photo printing, and save some time emailing photos or emails to friends and family throughout the country.” Charlene blogs about things that will put

Her blogs, photos, recipes, music and home school information are all neatly stored on separate pages on her site. “I am fairly new to blogging, but I’m totally hooked,” admits Amber. “I love the availability to just share my link to the world with new and old friends and family.” Other bloggers write about their hobbies and special interests in the hopes that people with similar interests will enjoy their take on the subject. “My blog has allowed me to meet people all around the world that share my interests in travel, cooking, photography and such,” says Jacki Dyrholm of Warrenton. Jacki started blogging as a way to keep up with family members who live abroad but soon discovered blogging communities filled with people who share her interests. Like Amber, Jacki is way more organized than I could ever hope to be. She is holding down three blogs on Blogger—all of which are neatly laid out and nicely linked. Her personal memoirs, travel stories and family posts are on www. jackidyrholm.blogspot.com; her cooking posts are on www. howtocooksomething.blogspot.com; and her online book club is on www.booknookclub.blogspot.com. “My goal is for my posts to read like we are all sitting down together chatting over a cup of coffee,” says Jacki. Five James Madison University students, including recent graduate Chelsea Barkema of Warrenton, have banned together to blog about one of their passions: eating (although you’d never know it by their svelte physiques). In an effort to help other students find and make good, healthy and inexpensive food choices, these five women offer restaurant reviews, recipes, tips and advice on www.JMUeats.com. Vini Holland of Warrenton uses his blog, www. chronicpainhero.wordpress.com, to talk about his health. Vini suffers from “debilitating chronic pains” but has learned to 30
cope in various ways and knows that there are many people out there who can benefit from the things he’s learned. He shares his research, methods and thoughts on dealing with pain. Although he began blogging as a means to draw traffic to his other websites (intending to make money on the Internet), he now realizes the real value in blogging is just to blog. Heather Wigton of Marshall blogs to hear herself think. At www.stormtalker.blogspot.com, Heather “wanted a medium for expressing and exploring thoughts and situations without having to go into a whole discussion or argument with someone else; a venting, if you will.” She tried different blogging venues before making Blogger her home site and vows that it’s virtually “idiot-proof”. She modeled her blog after the things she liked best about her friends’ blogs. (Please note, I have already teased her about how flatteringly similar our blogs are in appearance.) Her biggest challenge is keeping herself in check with the rambling, going over her posts to make sure she doesn’t run the full gamut of possible topics all in one sitting. Girlfriend has much to say about such topics as writing a novel, home remodeling, parenting and the economy. I think it’s safe to say that most of us are blogging mainly for personal reasons, but many people blog as a way to attract prospective clients to their business. Kelly Nebiolini of Delaplane set up her blog, www.kellyfinleynebiolini. wordpress.com, to market herself as a new attorney, as a form of self-expression, and as “a way to publish legally-related articles without going through the tedious process of submitting my work to an editor and waiting for the ‘yea’ or ‘nay’.” Although she takes her career seriously, Kelly appreciates the lighter side of life and she mixes the two effortlessly on her “blawg” with things like cartoons and “Frivolous Lawsuit of the Month” as well as updates about Virginia laws and family issues. Blogs make great photo albums and show-and-tell portfolios. Some local photographers are using them as a way to showcase their talents. of her work and it has become her most successful form of advertising. Regetis Photography is operated by three husband and wife teams, each with their own blog. Amy and Srinu Regeti of Warrenton post their blog on the main site, www.blog.regetis.com, while the top menu bar links to Ben and Jess’s blog and Ryan and MacKenzie’s blog. Regetis Photography uses their site as a way to market their business, chronicle their work, and as a way to inspire. By having a variety of wedding photos on their site, they hope other women will draw motivation and ideas to help plan their own weddings. The biggest challenge in blogging for business is the same as blogging for fun—finding the time and inspiration to constantly post new items. Regetis must be doing something right—100,000 hits per month aren’t too shabby. I know there are two ladies wondering if I’ll ever get around to mentioning them, but I was saving them for last. These two Warrenton women are blogging for their businesses as well, but theirs is a higher calling. The Reverends Deborah Shank and Sarah McQueen use the Internet

Sarah started blogging as a way to preview sermon topics while temporarily filling in at Warrenton United Methodist Church last year. She uses her blog, www.revsarah.wordpress. com, to connect with families at Warrenton UMC, but has found that her inspiration reaches outside her intended circle and is delighted to hear that parishioners are spreading the word about God and blogging. The opportunities to do even more good and to meet more people in the community were an added benefit Sarah hadn’t thought of, but is grateful for, nonetheless. This spring Sarah gave up blogging for Lent. “I needed it to be a time to listen more than a time to write,” she says. Long before her 40 days of abstinence were over, people approached Sarah wondering when she’d be back online. QUESTION: Allison G. from Marshall, VA asks, “I am looking to fix up my 1970s Split Level, though not sure what areas to focus on and what rooms and products will be the best return on my investment. What should I consider first and why?” ANSWER:

Allison, In the 1950s and 1960s the favorite home style for builders of that era was the split level. “Splits,” or divided entry homes are found in every corner of the country. They typically split at the front door entry with stairs up or down. New home builders are not building many split level models these days, but an older split level home is a perfect candidate for a remodel. Homes built during this period are extremely structurally sound, often featuring a square floor plan with center and perimeter wall bearing points. This is like having an open canvas for a remodeler! The options are almost endless. Front porches, porticos, front and rear additions and even another level of the house are all relatively easy to design and engineer on a split level home. Below is a before and after picture of the remodel of a split level home. Not all renovations or upgrades have to be this dramatic. It is a good idea to upgrade your electric, heating/ ventilation and plumbing systems to new, more efficient units and
materials. Inevitably this will result in lower operating energy costs for your home. I always recommend updating these environmental systems. In terms of which interior rooms to remodel, historically the best return on your investment, (ROI), for a remodeling project is the Kitchen, Master Suite and Bathrooms. These are great first choices for renovation. There are many options, materials and products, covering virtually every price range and budget. For example, the same size kitchen can be remodeled for tens of thousands of dollars difference just by the choice of materials. It is important to know your budget before you start your remodel, and to share it with your builder so he or she can advise you properly during the selection process. Hope this helps Allison! On The Airplane To Berkley by Greg Bodoh
It’s a great view from 30,000 feet! That is what I see coming in the market and the economy for the rest of 2009. I have been reading and listening to Harry Dent (economist and demographics specialist). I have found many of his predictions to be credible. While no one can foretell the market with precision, most of the time Harry does pretty well. When I read other economists’ reports that coincide with his predictions, I get even more comfortable. Harry is predicting a rising market through late July, with a Dow of 10,000. He believes the market will then collapse as a result of mounting credit card defaults and commercial real estate declines. Unemployment is expected to continue to rise, causing those who have jobs to be more conservative with their spending. 70% of the Gross Domestic Product is made up of consumer purchases; this does not bode well for a sustained recovery. Baby boomers are aging and are now in their declining spending years. When 78 million consumers reduce spending, it further slows the economy. Inflation pressures are mounting, causing U.S. treasury bonds to rise from a bottom of 2%. These rates are projected to reach 4.5% or higher in 2010. This rise will cause interest rates to increase and as a result, will slow or stop the recovery of residential real estate, with higher mortgage payments, and bonds will decline in value. The rise in interest rates will hurt the banks’ recovery by slowing the residential real estate recovery. The stimulus plan has its limits of effectiveness in stimulating the economy. These limits will be reached by the fall of 2009, ending the recovery. September and October are traditionally bad months for the stock market and with all this year’s problems, they are likely to be very dangerous months. Harry Dent is predicting a Dow of 2,000 to 5,000 for the next bottom coming this fall and into early 2010. This would be a 50% to 80% loss from his anticipated high of 10,000 this July. Imagine this scenario: It’s been since October 9, 2007 when our market was at its last 38
high. You have $100,000, which falls to $50,000 by January 2009, a 50% loss. The Dow was around 7,000. By July 2009 it rises to 10,000, a 43% rise. Your account is now worth $71,500. The Dow then falls to 5,000 by early 2010, another 50% loss. Now you have $35,750 in your account (and you are not smiling). It didn’t work to time the market in March of 2000. It didn’t work in October 2007. It amazes me that with the 50% loss of 2000 still somewhat fresh in people’s minds, they allowed a second 50% loss in 2007. Warren Buffet said, “What we learn from history is that we don’t learn from history.” He’s right, and for those who are still in the market trying to recover their losses without a floor, they will likely lose again in the fall of 2009. Now for the Good News! If the stock market continues to rise through July, it will rise for fixed annuities also. Clients in the market indices with anniversaries from now till July may have nice returns. If you think that you are out of the woods, your investment broker can put you in the S&P 500. If you are right, you will have a great return. If you are wrong, you can get a 10% to 12% bonus on your entire principal for the effort and try it again next year. Our job is not to try and convince you to go in a direction that you are not comfortable with. Nor, do we have to, since we can position you safely and effectively for either the up or the down. Boomers are entering their biggest savings in years with a new fear of the stock market. Hence, the money will flow to conservative bond portfolios, band CDs and annuities. Community In Action
The Warrenton Pony Show The Warrenton Pony Show, “The Oldest Pony Show in America”, celebrated it’s 90th year this June at the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds. The Show is held to benefit a local charity and this year the proceeds will go to the Fauquier S.P.C.A. They have been donating to the S.P.C.A. for many years and in the amounts of $5,000 to $7,000 these past few years. The Warrenton Pony Show is run by juniors eighteen years of age and younger and operates under the supervision of the Warrenton Pony Show, Inc. Board of Directors - a group of local adult volunteers, some of whom are ex-members of the Junior Committee. The knowledge and practical experience gained from producing this “A” rated show are valuable in many ways. Helping to instill the importance of responsibility and community service are some of the lessons learned. In 1999, the Board of Directors started a scholarship fund in memory of Puller Hughes, a long time friend and advisor of the Pony Show. This fund has allowed the Board to award college scholarships to deserving members of the Junior Committee.
On June 18th the members of the Junior Committee, along with some of the adult volunteers, got together to spruce up the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds with a fresh coat of paint.

We always look forward to summer as a time for vacations, relaxing and a break from school. But when it gets here, we realize how fast paced and busy it can be with yard work, gardening, cookouts, family and all the things we want to get done while the weather is warm. About now, you might be thinking how can you get it all done? Well for starters, think LOCAL, it will save you a lot of time. Our newest business to open is the Oak View National Bank, on Broadview Avenue. It was started by local people who want to make sure that the “local bank”, with personal caring service, does not disappear or get lost as many small banks get purchased by larger banks. What a great idea! We also saw the grand opening of our newest grocery store, Harris Teeter, and a new preschool, Warrenton Presbyterian School, which is now enrolling for fall 2009. We lost Crescendo’s restaurant on Main Street, but it will not be empty for long. Todd Eisenhauer (chef at Napoleon’s) and his wife Liz will be opening not one, but two restaurants in the space. Sweeny’s Cellar will be downstairs and Black Bear Bistro will be upstairs, both will have a more casual atmosphere and they want to control the costs to make it more affordable. They plan to have them open by this month and Todd will continue to assist Napoleon’s with training and menus. Construction is beginning on the assisted living facility in the Suffield Meadows development. This will give people one more transitional step when they need a bit more help and security in their daily lives. One of the more interesting things going on is also somewhat puzzling. It seems that there is an application to put White Horse Car Wash at the same address as the Friendly’s restaurant. Former Wakefield School teachers, Nancy Martin and Laura Kane opened a tutoring business and are offering summer camps for students at Vint Hill. Robin’s Nest Antiques & Collectibles (above the Marshall Mercantile) has a great variety of things and you are sure to find something you like.
