Why Print?

Print is beautiful. WHY do they call it the graphic arts? Because print is beautiful and printers continue to consider every job they do a personal masterpiece. And now advanced color proofing and advanced screening techniques make your project more appealing and compelling. Photos seem to jump off the page, special effects draw the eye to the printed content, and a new generation of papers and substrates make readers want to touch and feel your message. You can’t get any closer than that. The beauty of print will enhance your product or service, giving it a special appeal of its own and an extra tangible dimension that no electronic media can impart.

Home Design

I’ve heard of it…

Universal Design by Marianne Crawford

I

t’s great looking and helps folks…it’s also called agingin-place, accessible design, inclusive design and more. No matter what the name, the goal is the same: to make products and homes safe and easy to use with the fun of luxury style. You probably already have universal design elements in your house now and don’t realize it. You may have extra wide door entry spaces for someone carrying a child or an arm load of groceries, or to accommodate a large appliance or piece of furniture. Your skylight allows plenty of cheerful natural light while eliminating shadows. We’re all familiar with OXO kitchen gadgets. These were designed by a husband to aid his wife who was having trouble opening products with her hands. Those very cool shallow sinks with futuristic faucets? These also are universally designed for ease of use. In the kitchen, the new refrigerator and dishwasher drawers are Above: Kitchen Dish Drawer with Pegs - Very adjustable, safe, low placed dish storage (Diamond Cabinets)

more easily reached than a conventional refrigerator and use less water and electricity. While infusing style into your home, universal design also enhances safety by reducing accidents. No-step showers, slip-resistant floors and grab bars that we see in upscale hotels and new homes integrate it while increasing the home’s market value. My Experience

T

he untimely death of my son from a brain tumor at the age of 53 taught me the benefits of the national hospice movement. Immediately upon being diagnosed with this incurable illness, his physician referred him to hospice care. For six months and then for an additional six months he remained at home where he received almost daily care by a social worker, regular medical care by a skilled nurse, and periodic checkups by a physician. When he lost his ability to walk, he was furnished an electric wheel chair. All the above came at no cost to him. Throughout this period he experienced no pain (palliative care) enabling ease of communication between him and his friends and family.

My Plan Should I be diagnosed with a terminal illness (cancer, emphysema, “Lou Gehrig’s disease”, early stage dementia or another), I will ask my physician to refer me to Hospice of the Rapidan.

My Reasons • I have personally heard and read countless remarks by appreciative family members. • I have seen the tears (both sad and joyful) of family members at the annual Butterfly Celebrations. • I have observed at the annual Christmas Celebrations the fellowship of families who have similar memories and experiences. • I have participated in periodic Grief Support Groups where family members are lovingly guided through steps of grieving. • I have attended the annual Gala and seen the smiling faces of people dancing and taking part in the benefit auctions. • I have spoken with doctors who shared with me their confidence in Hospice of the Rapidan. • I continue to marvel at the diligence of those nurses who have served with Hospice of the Rapidan for years, who know the geography of our area inside out, and who when needed visit homes in the middle of the night.

I give this testimonial in loving memory of my son and in recognition of the highly skilled staff members (medical and administrative) of Hospice of the Rapidan

Universal Design continued from page 6 Both the concept and words “universal design” are the result of the brain storming of Ron Mace, an architect in the 1980s. Initially only used in public places, it is now implemented with more style in private homes. While the terms ‘universal design’ and ‘accessible’ are often used interchangeably, accessible sometimes refers to being wheelchair accessible in a public space. This was mandated with the U.S. Government’s ADA law (Americans with Disabilities Act), passed in 1990, requiring all public spaces to be reachable via wheelchair. The popular open floor plans in houses are perfect for incorporating universal design features such as turning spaces for a wheelchair or crutches, smooth wood floors throughout (remember shag carpeting?), and flat thresholds. Removing non-load-bearing interior walls to create an open space with large windows results in bright, open and wellplanned interiors. It’s easy to see why this is becoming standard design, as the results are beautiful and functional, not clinical-looking. Good universal design is hidden - you don’t see it, but the

room feels good. An AARP study found 83 percent of homeowners over age 45 plan to stay in their current homes for the rest of their lives. Today’s seniors and baby boomers, while aging, are continuing to stay active – yeah! “As they’re aging, they’re going to be much more demanding of products and ways that their lives can be enhanced,” says James Joseph Pirkl, a universal design expert and professor of industrial design at Syracuse University.

How Can I Use It?

How can you integrate it into your current house? For cost-efficiency, universal design elements are best incorporated into your home when it is first built. In fact, Florida now has building codes requiring some elements in all new construction. For example, in a bathroom, the reinforcement is built-in behind the wall, in case a grab bar will be placed later. Most of us live in a house that may require renovation for universal design and this can be beneficial in our everyday life tasks while adding value to your home. Creating a more functional kitchen, taking space from an adjacent room to create a larger master bath or widening doorways will enhance usability, also adding a well-designed and upscale outdoor walkup ramp that cannot be seen from the street. You may be able to remove walls, but some may be load-bearing and this can be more costly. A smaller scale project without major remodeling is a smart option. Replacing surface materials, newer fixtures and appliances and improved lighting and windows, adding just one lowered work counter in the kitchen, and reorganizing drawers by adding pull-out bins and easy to use handles increases usability and allows you to stay within a budget. Make a carefully thought-out checklist of what you need, and do what makes sense for your own needs, space and budget. The result should be beautiful and functional, and not clinical-looking. Universal design benefits people in many ways; we’ll be seeing more of it.

Fauquier Health New Medical Oncologist Joins Hospital Staff “We believe that Dr. Ali will be a great complement to the patient-centered experience that we have been able to create at Fauquier Hospital as well as the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas.” — Fauquier Health CEO and president Rodger Baker

It takes a special kind of person to work with cancer patients and their families. Syed Salman Ali, M.D., is just such a person. Fauquier Hospital’s new medical oncologist/hematologist recalls that he chose to specialize in cancer care because of the special bond he is able to develop with his patients. Dr. Ali says, “The relationships that develop when you are helping someone through cancer treatments are unique. I think it’s important to treat the whole person. To me that means considering the needs of patients and their families, the social impact of a cancer diagnosis and the potential financial issues that arise during treatment. Prescribing a treatment plan is the easy part. But a good cancer care provider does his or her best to treat the whole patient.” Dr. Ali is the only oncologist/hematologist with a practice in Fauquier County. Bringing this practice to Warrenton has been a priority for Fauquier Health, said CEO and president Rodger Baker. “We believe that Dr. Ali will be a great complement to the patient-centered experience that we have been able to create at Fauquier Hospital as well as the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas,” Baker says.

As a further commitment to bringing cancer care close to home, Fauquier Hospital is expanding its Infusion Center, where hormonal therapy and chemotherapy are given. Dr. Ali said that he will work closely with radiation oncologist Sanjeev Aggerwal, M.D., of the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas when radiation therapy is necessary. “I love it here at Fauquier Hospital,” says Dr. Ali. “It undoubtedly provides a very nurturing environment for all my patients. The system-wide dedication to patient-centered care is well exemplified here. It takes a special model of care to work with cancer patients and their families. Clearly, Fauquier Hospital has the right people for this job.” Dr. Ali stresses, “I believe in supportive care, a minimization of side effects from chemotherapy, and prevention of complications such as infections. Quality of life must be an integral part of any treatment considerations.” Dr. Ali’s medical credentials are impressive. After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College in 2003, Dr. Ali completed the North Shore University Hospital Internal Medicine Internship and Residency Program. Following, he completed the Monter Cancer Center Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program at North Shore University Hospital. Among his many academic honors, Dr. Ali served as chief resident at North Shore University Hospital, and graduated magna cum laude from the undergraduate biomedical science program at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. Dr. Ali is currently a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is fluent in English, Hindi and Urdu. Dr. Syed Salman Ali’s office is located on the first floor of Fauquier Hospital near the front lobby. He can be reached at 540-316-4360.

Dr. Jakum. Patient Jakum. Coach Jakum. When Dr. Josh Jakum tore his ACL during a soccer game, his first thought was, “How am I going to coach my sons’ lacrosse team?” With only a few short months until the season, he set out to find the best orthopedic care. So, he teamed up with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Smith, who previously served with the Baltimore Ravens. The two agreed to a bone-tendon-bone graft surgery. And then came the rehab. Three days a week Dr. Jakum worked to regain his strength and mobility. But on March 12th, he didn’t show up for his therapy. Because he was on the field, putting the Talons lacrosse team through their very first drills. Orthopedics For more information on our Orthopedic services visit www.fauquierhealth.org.

Community

The Call For Community Leadership by Robert B. Iadeluca, Ph.D. On May 4, 2007 at 9:45 p.m. a black cloud almost two miles in width with winds of 205 miles an hour traveled nearly 22 miles and descended on the town of Greensburg, Kansas. The tornado destroyed 95 percent of the city, the other five percent left severely damaged. Eleven people died. For all intents and purposes, Greensburg, which had a population of 1,500, no longer existed. Both President George W. Bush and Governor Kathleen Sibelius declared Kiowa County a disaster area. Yet today Greensburg thrives. Shortly after the disaster, the town administrator, the city council president and the mayor met under a tent where the town hall used to be and came to a conclusion that would delight the heart of any sociologist. A community, they came to realize, is not merely a collection of houses and businesses. Nor is it just a collection of human individuals. A community has a 14

life of its own which goes beyond the lives of its residents. They interact with each other and this interaction is the glue that holds a community together. Putting it simply, Greensburg still existed. The majority of residents were still alive and in that same location. As local, state, and federal emergency personnel moved in with survival gear, the dilemma was to rebuild the town or let the residents move to other areas. These three key leaders in Greensburg decided that the revitalization of the town was possible and quickly realized that additional leaders were necessary – men and women whose vision was equally forward looking and positive – citizens who believed that “what the mind can conceive, man can achieve.” Conversations soon changed from “can” achieve to “will” achieve. Greensburg has a proud history, sitting on a freight train line that cuts across

the flat open prairie. It is home to the world’s largest hand dug well which in 1888 was 109 feet deep, 32 feet in diameter and provided water for the steam engines of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Greensburg existed for generations as a prosperous farm community. Its residents followed the usual daily behaviors of a small town – stopping at the local coffee shop in the morning to trade news and gossip, taking children to school, trading at the bank, shopping at the stores, helping neighbors. Despite the independence of each individual, their interdependence held the community together. Surrounded by total devastation, the three town leaders considered these factors as they discussed the “future” of Greensburg. They used terms like “better building, smarter building, and better infrastructure.” The following Leadership continued on page 16 Warrenton Lifestyle

Leadership continued from page 14 day in a national TV interview, the city council president used those very words adding, “And by the way, we’re going to rebuild green.” The first reaction of some people was “Why are you going to bother to rebuild at all?” The city council president’s reaction was “Why not?” Other communities were already helping along with state and federal assistance. The city council passed a resolution stating that all city buildings would be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) platinum standards. They formed Green Town, a nonprofit organization to help the residents learn about and implement the green living initiative. Farmers and ranchers joined with environmentalists to rebuild Greensburg as a model green community with sustainable design and a reliance on renewable energy. The Community Recovery Plan began with an intensive 12-week process between a planning team, local, state, and federal officials, business owners, civic groups, and citizens. The simple 16

guiding principle was to keep the things that made Greensburg a good place in which to live and to own a business, and to build upon the strengths of the community, making it more prosperous, appealing, livable and sustainable.

Disasters come in many forms. Some, like tornadoes, can be seen or heard or felt. Others, like economic depressions or recessions, are recognized only by their results. Warrenton is not immune to what has been called the Great Recession. One of the most beautiful Main Streets in Virginia has empty stores and restaurants. “For Sale” and “For Rent” signs are conspicuous on tree-lined residential streets. Families are selling their second cars. Local news headlines speak of budget problems. This beautiful community of 8,000 also has a proud history, worthy of preserving. In 1810 the town was incorporated and named for General Joseph Warren, a revolutionary war hero. It is one of Virginia’s principal rural towns, evolving from a mid-18th century crossroads settlement at the intersection of the main roads from Winchester, Fredericksburg, Culpeper and Alexandria. This is where John Marshall, fourth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, began his distinguished professional career. The Warren Green Leadership continued on page 18 Warrenton Lifestyle

Leadership continued from page 16 Hotel hosted the Marquis de Lafayette, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and President Theodore Roosevelt. Warrenton is known nationally as a region for horse riding and fox hunting, and for residential architecture of various styles. Colonel John S. Mosby, Confederate Calvary hero, made his home and practiced law in Warrenton after the Civil War. By 1850 the railroad reached Warrenton and the station, now a restaurant, remains in its original form.

Is our leadership ready to ask questions never before asked such as: • What is the role of the school system? • What is the role of the hospital? • What is the role of the Chamber of Commerce? • Where does the airport fit in?

What does Greensburg teach us? In the two years prior to the tornado, unemployment in Greensburg had been rising. The community, as its citizens often proclaimed, was “barely making it.” The disastrous tornado, due to the vision of the town’s leaders, became an opportunity. The community, under the guidance of their leaders, decided to fight for the town they loved.

• What can children do to help?

Are our mayor, town council, and town administrator ready to lead the community toward regrowth?

• The news media?

Greensburg teaches us that regardless of the type or size or scope of the disaster (an economic downturn in our case), elected leaders who understand what makes up a community can inspire its citizens to rise above the catastrophe. Now Greensburg has a new downtown business center and a city hall built with recycled materials. Warrenton’s own Mayor Fitch has demonstrated vision by proposing to provide all of the town’s energy by processing methane from a local landfill. He set a goal of 50% reduction in our carbon footprint by 2020. The new Fauquier Bank Building and Highland School are also taking the “green” approach. Where in Warrenton are there men and women of vision who love this community and want to assist the town’s elected leaders in a revitalization project – potential leaders willing to speak to the community on behalf of the excellent restaurants, retail stores, and other local businesses? Does Warrenton, Virginia have the leadership equivalent to that demonstrated in Greensburg, Kansas? Are our mayor, town council, and town administrator ready to lead the community toward regrowth? Are the citizens ready to fight for the town they love? An ancient tale tells of a community which was convinced of the combined power of its citizens. Wanting to demonstrate this to themselves, they decided to meet at a spot in the desert and, at a given signal, raise a glorious shout to the Heavens. The moment arrived. The leader dropped his upraised hand. And each person present listened intently to hear the shout. 18

• What new types of businesses does Warrenton need? • How can banks help? • What is the role of the community college? • Are the elder citizens being considered? • What are we doing for our teenagers? • Do religious organizations have a place in this Renaissance? • Are we welcoming to tourists? • How about civic organizations? • Performing arts? • Transportation systems? • Police department? • Fire department? • How can we attract our commuters? • Are we considering our Hispanic residents?

Fauquier Domestic Violence serVices (FDVS) is looking for volunteers to help start a comprehensive domestic violence and sexual assault victim services organization in Fauquier County. FDVS is a new non-profit organization that was created by the Fauquier Family Shelter Services board solely to develop services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. “Right now, I am the sole employee so we are really counting on the community to help us get started,” said Lisa Lynn Chapman, FDVS Program Coordinator. “FDVS volunteers have the opportunity to work in all aspects of the agency including crisis line, domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy services, peer support groups, and administrative needs.” All FDVS volunteers must complete a 40 hour volunteer training and program specific training. According to Chapman, even teens can volunteer to help start a teen dating awareness program which will have a separate training program. FDVS currently offers prevention education programs to businesses, civic groups, religious organizations, health care providers and schools. Topics include: What Is Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault?, Domestic Violence in the Workplace, Teen Dating Violence, and Domestic Violence in Religious Communities. Once a meeting place is located, FDVS will begin offering Survivor Empowerment Groups for survivors of domestic violence. The Unsung Heroes of Health Care Community Involvement

Why Home health providers and nursing home assistants are critical to our aging population by Vicki Vance, Fauquier County Resource Specialist, Aging Together

The December 2009 blizzard was an inconvenience for many of us in Fauquier County, but for some, it was life threatening. For Gail Brown, it could have been a disaster had it not been for Terri Mann, her Home Health aide and Terri’s employer Jack St. Clair of Home Instead. Terri called her boss for a ride to Ms. Brown’s house at the end of a long gravel road in Nokesville. Terri and Jack knew that with no power at the Brown house the generator would function for a short time only. Ms. Brown, who is bed-ridden, needs a constant supply of oxygen. On the road to Ms. Brown’s house, they passed a fire truck that had gone into a ditch the day before trying to get to her. Terri and Jack drove as far as they could up the wooded lane, but were unable to go any further. Carrying gas cans and other supplies for Ms. Brown, the two went the last 300 yards on foot. Later, after several days without power, the National Guard came in to transport Ms. Brown from the house, Terri by her side.

personal care assistant, certified nursing assistant, and home health aide. But the bond between these direct care staff and the seniors they support is the same. They are dedicated to assuring the health and safety of “their” seniors. “I provided support to a man with multiple sclerosis for nine years, helping him with activities of daily living. With my assistance, he was able to get out and enjoy evenings with his friends, attend special occasions with his children, get to medical appointments, and more” says Bridget Siljander, a local Certified Nursing Assistant.

One of my favorite parts of the job is being able to lend an ear when there’s something they want to talk about.”

It is hard to image what draws people to these careers. Certified Nursing Assistant Vicki Erickson says, “I work in a nursing home, monitoring residents’ vital signs and helping them eat, bathe, use the restroom and even walk. One of my favorite parts of the job is being able to lend an ear when there’s something they want to talk about.” Health Care continued on page 24

In February, Fauquier was hit again with a double dose of winter that left over 27 inches of snow between Fauquier seniors and the people who support them. Many homebound seniors were stranded without electricity, heat or water. Police cars, fire trucks, tow trucks and Hummers from the National Guard fanned out across the county to bring caring aides to their clients at home or in area nursing homes. Numerous staff stayed at senior’s homes or nursing homes for several consecutive days to assure their patients would have the care they needed. Jack and his drivers drove several hundred miles to bring caregivers to and from their charges. Direct care workers are the unsung heroes of the health care business. They go by a number of titles including 22

Health Care continued from page 22 Direct care workers like Terri Mann, one of the heroes of the blizzards, seem to be born to this career of caring for people. Terri started out as a Candy Striper (a young hospital volunteer) and went to nursing school until her family finances forced to her end her studies. Later Terri went on to George Mason University studying for a masters in Health Education as a part time student. She joined Home Instead October 2009

Direct care staffs, working in senior’s homes and nursing facilities, are among the fastest growing careers today. Kathy Clements, Executive Director of Hospice of the Rapidan notes their critical role in the services Hospice provides. “Without these caring and compassionate people, hospice care would be quite simply, a shell with no substance.” Debbie Vinzant works at Oak Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

“They have been a huge help for me.,” says Crandell, a baby boomer who had to take over care of his mother suddenly when she had a debilitating stroke nine years ago.” Home health care assistants help Crandall with laundry and general housekeeping duties, in addition to providing his mother with much needed companionship. “The assistance they provide allows me to get a break, so that I can get other things done during the day, and my mom really looks forward to visiting with her aide each day.” “With so many baby boomers now becoming caregivers, it’s important to remember that we don’t have to go at it alone,” says Sheila, another daughter caring for her father and still working from home. “It’s okay to reach out for help, whether it’s from a resources like a home health care agency or from friends, doctors, church or a support group. We don’t have to take care of everything ourselves.”

to support herself in a job she enjoyed while finishing school. Today Terri cares for Mrs. Brown three days a week. Mrs. Brown is a sharp and witty woman who, now confined to her bed, lives with her daughter. Terri assists Ms. Brown with the basic activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring and eating. Perhaps more importantly she also keeps Mrs. Brown company and shares with her a variety of activities to keep her spirits up. Terri feels Home Instead made a good match in having her be a home health aide to Mrs. Brown. “They try to match personalities. Mrs. Brown and I enjoy many of the same thingssitting in the garden outside, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, trivia questions. I try and keep up with her and she needs someone to challenge her.” 24

in Warrenton. Debbie has been at Oak Springs for 9 years and is totally committed to the people she supports. “There is nothing else I would want to do and no place else I’d rather be.” Debbie started at Oak Springs when she was 17 as a summer employee during high school and eventually moved into a full time position. “It is sad at times, we lose one of our family members when a patient passes away. Nevertheless, there is so much joy in seeing the faces light up when they see me in the morning. I love these people like family.” Family caregivers provide over 80% of the care for seniors and people with disabilities in Virginia. Home health staff helps to bridge the gap from health care facilities back to their homes. The result is fewer medication and other errors and better patient outcomes.

Gail Brown and Terri Mann — “They try to match personalities. Mrs. Brown and I enjoy many of the same things- sitting in the garden outside, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, trivia questions. I try and keep up with her and she needs someone to challenge her.”

Recalling Ivy Hill and the Edmonds Families by John Toler

This fall, the Town of Warrenton and the Partnership for Warrenton Foundation will publish a history of the town, in celebration of Warrenton’s 200th anniversary. Following is an excerpt from the upcoming book.

T

he construction of new homes in the Ivy Hill community northwest of Warrenton began in the early 1980s, but at the time, there was already one house that had been there for a long time: the original “Ivy Hill,” built by Capt. Elias Edmonds and his wife Elizabeth Miller Edmonds over 200 years ago. Ivy Hill continued on page 34

Ivy Hill continued from page 32 In the early days of Fauquier County, the Edmond family was very much involved in county affairs. Originally from Lancaster County, Elias Edmonds and his brother William settled in what was to become Fauquier County around 1741. William purchased 514 acres on the Winchester Road northwest of present-day Warrenton from Richard Henry Lee for 250 pounds. He built the original “Oak Springs,” between today’s Oak Springs Nursing Home and the Warrenton Center. Elias built Ivy Hill on the property nearby. On August 24, 1761, just two years after the establishment of Fauquier County, Lt. Gov. Francis Fauquier commissioned William Edmonds as a captain, with orders to enlist a company of volunteers from Fauquier County to fight in the French and Indian War, creating the county’s first militia. During the American Revolution that followed, both Edmonds brothers fought for independence, Elias as a captain in the Culpeper Minute Men, and William commanding the Fauquier Militia. Ivy Hill continued on page 36

Ivy Hill continued from page 34 By the end of the Revolution, Elias had risen to the rank of lieutenant colonel, and just before 1800 built a brick home north of Ivy Hill, which he called “Edmonium.” Elias and his second wife, Frances, lived at Edmonium in their later years, while their son Elias Jr. lived at Ivy Hill. After the Civil War, Edmonium was renamed “Loretto” by the Col. John Scott, who owned the property at the time. More recently, Loretto has been the home of Mr. and Mrs. William N. Wilbur.

Blackwell, who was married to James DeRuyter Blackwell (1828-1901), the well-regarded Warrenton poet who is buried in the family cemetery off present-day Fletcher Drive, near Oak Springs. James DeRuyter and Emma Blackwell’s daughter, Elizabeth Carter Blackwell, sold Ivy Hill to Philip J. Ayton in 1952. At the time, the Ivy Hill property had shrunk to 300 acres. In

that the old house was lost. “A Pride of Place, Rural Residences of Fauquier County, Virginia,” stated that the house had been destroyed, and that “Only the site of Ivy Hill survives.” A photo of the structure in ruins accompanied the description. Ivy Hill is saved In the mid-1980s developer Bob Sowder of Catlett began building

The Edmonds family homes As the family grew, Edmonds descendants from both sides of the family remained in the Warrenton area, and built some of the fine homes northwest of town. These included “Nordix” (which was located in present-day Warrenton Lakes, and burned in the early 1900s), and the house at “Glanaman,” built in the early 1800s. Another Edmonds property was “Conway Grove,” built on Winchester Street in the early 1800s, and named for Edwin Conway, a friend of the Edmonds family. Elias Edmonds Jr. willed Ivy Hill to his son, Elias III, who acquired the property in 1840. Tax records from 1857 indicate that the value of the 886.5 acres owned by Elias Edmonds III rose from $1,000 to $3,000, possibly due to the building of a second house on the property, which was called “Hopefield.” In 1868, Elias III willed Hopefield to his two granddaughters. In the years before the Civil War, Ivy Hill was a prosperous plantation. But with the coming of the war, Elias Edmonds IV enlisted as a private in the Warrenton Rifles, serving under Capt. John Quincy Marr. In his absence, Ivy Hill suffered great economic stress, especially after the 22 slaves that worked the farm departed. But somehow, the house survived. In 1899, Elias Edmonds IV left Ivy Hill to his nephew, Garland E. James. At James’ death, the property passed to the children of his sister, Emma 36

By the later 1970s, Ivy Hill had been vacant for years and was in complete disrepair. Photo credit: “Pride of Place.” 1962, the Town of Warrenton acquired 62 acres of the old farm for the new reservoir on Cedar Run. Following Mr. Ayton’s death, the property was sold by his estate to Ivy Hill Farms Inc. The sale was recorded on Aug. 1, 1963, and the 238-acre parcel went for $110,000. Development of the land was done in phases over the next 30 years, slowed by a couple of recessions.

homes on lots in Phase 3 of Ivy Hill, which included the old house. He recalls that the original access to the Ivy Hill plantation was a wagon road off of Blackwell Road that “…wound its way up to the house, typical of the paths that connected the old farms,” said Mr. Sowder. He also remembers some of the outbuildings, including an old slave cabin, a barn that was made into a residence, and an old cemetery.

An article in the January 1980 edition of News and Notes, the Fauquier Historical Society newsletter, described the house at Ivy Hill as “…empty for many years, and now stands in ruins, stripped and vandalized until it remains a shadow of its former self.”

Recognizing that the section of Ivy Hill he was developing was a special place, Mr. Sowder planned for ample open space and created “early residential clusters,” with most homes located on secluded cul-de-sacs. In addition, residents were required to

While it would have been far easier to demolish the old main house at Ivy Hill, Mr. Sowder decided to rehabilitate it. He hired two skilled craftsmen, brothers Tommy and “Buzzy” Foster, to take the house down and rebuild it. After stabilizing the structure, the Fosters carefully restored the house, using as much of the original materials as possible. While they had the house down to its bones, they installed modern electrical, plumbing, heating

and air conditioning systems to make the house more livable. For his efforts, Mr. Sowder later received an award from a national organization for preserving the structure. The new address of the old manor house was, quite fittingly, Manor House Drive. In December 1986, Mr. Sowder traded the Ivy Hill house on .28 acre for a 15-acre property on Meetze Road owned by Mr. and Mrs. Willis P. Risdon. Mrs. Judy Risdon recalls seeing photographs of the house in its most decrepit state. “The roof had caved in, and much of the second floor had collapsed,” she said. “You could see the sun shining through the second floor onto the first floor hearth.”

Completely restored and renovated, Ivy Hill is the home of Mrs. Willis P. Risdon.

38

The Risdons were very pleased with the work done on the main house by the Foster brothers, and when they decided to add a master bedroom wing to the north side of the house, they hired Buzzy Foster as the general contractor. “We visited Williamsburg to get ideas about how small houses from the same period as ours looked,” explained Mrs. Risdon. They photographed features they appropriate, and had the exterior of the new wing designed to not only match the original structure, but to complement it. As the Ivy Hill community matures, its original home and namesake remains, a visible link to a prominent Warrenton family and a meaningful legacy that could have been so easily lost. The fair offers different shows each year as part of entry into the fair.

by Michael Tedeschi — photos by Sandy Dodson While most residents of Fauquier County don’t live the life of a cattle rancher, race car driver, country music singer or exotic animal keeper, once a year people of all ages can enjoy these fabulous experiences at the annual Fauquier County Fair. This year marks the fair’s “Diamond Affair” as it celebrates its 60th anniversary. The fair’s visitors have grown 50 times in number since the first year—they expect around 20,000 visitors again this summer during the 4-day weekend. The fair begins Thursday, July 15 and runs until Sunday, July 18, and will feature rides, vendors and special events. The Fauquier County Fair is run by an incredibly experienced and dedicated volunteer staff working for a local non-profit organization. Since the relocation of the fair from behind the Fauquier County Livestock Exchange to its current location at 6209 Old Auburn Road, the fair’s boom has complemented the crowd’s growing appetite. Fair continued from page 42 deo,” said Brenda Rich, president and manager of the Fauquier County Fair. “It’s a great way to really start off the weekend’s festivities.” The fair always showcases an exciting new event each year. “We’re bringing the Timberworks Lumberjack Show to the fair this year,” Rich said. “It’s something I saw at the Virginia State Fair, and I really liked it. [The lumberjacks] climb logs, have log rolling competitions in a big water tank, and will chainsaw designs out of wood.” This event is sponsored by BB&T and will feature a unique blend of comedy, sport and history throughout the weekend. While the fair showcases many different types of entertainment, one thing that everyone enjoys is music. Friday night will showcase two shows by The Fabulous Hubcaps at 7:30 pm and 9 pm. This high octane show, new to the fair, will include group harmony, classic Rock & Roll, Motown and R&B music. On Saturday, beginning at 6:30 pm, Richie Fields, member of Country Weekly/CMA’s Who’s New to watch in 2009, will perform with his upbeat and positive message. He is opening for James Otto, a recent CMA nominee and member of the MuzikMafia. Otto’s concert, sponsored by Country Chevrolet, Moriah Farm and Eddie L. Payne Trucking, Inc., will begin at 8 pm. On Sunday at noon, The Scott Brannon Band will offer their traditional bluegrass style.

Above: James Otto, country recording artist with Warner/Reprise will perform Saturday night at 8 p.m. Enjoy barns full of livestock including goats, beef, dairy, poultry, rabbits & new this year, miniature horses.

Ask

The Builder

QUESTION: Answer: Paige, this is a common question asked by homeowners and realtors, but even more so now that our local economy seems to be rebounding. In general, the industry is seeing a trend toward smaller projects, many of them focused on ROI (return on investment) or curb appeal. Most of these projects won’t drain your wallet, but will typically give make a big difference when you go to sell your home. Until that time you do sell, you also get to enjoy the new improvements!

Remodel or replace your front door or entry area Think about when you first meet someone. Your first impression is usually the correct one isn’t it? The same goes for your home. The front door, portico or entry is the gateway to your home, setting the tone for how people will view the rest of your house. A beautiful interior is often negated or forgotten if someone enters a home through a dilapidated or unattractive entry way. Consider replacing your old front door with a new one, accenting the door with base and capital trim details to draw attention to the entry. A front portico or porch roof is always a great way to welcome and introduce people to your home.

Replace your appliances New appliances not only improve the functionality of a home, they can make an old kitchen or wet bar area look like new. Appliances are available through many sources and can be researched easily via the internet. The National Association of Home Builders state that new home buyers are looking for functionality, practical improvements and energy efficient upgrades when purchasing a home. Replacing your old and aged appliances will certainly put you ahead of the game in a new buyer’s eyes. 50

Paige D., from the Town of Warrenton asks, “What are some less expensive projects that I could do on my home to help with curb appeal or increase the value if I wanted to sell my house in the future?” Replace or upgrade the exterior “skin” of your home I often visit potential remodeling clients who own wonderfully designed homes, but something about the exterior façade causes the home to seem dated or poorly thought out. Often the decade in which your home was built determines which exterior materials were used. The 1960’s era homes had manly brick front facades, 1970’s brought us the aluminum siding push, the 1980’s was the decade of pine “T-1-11” (plywood siding) and cedar siding and finally the 90’s was the decade of vinyl. We now have many low maintenance options, (like cement based siding and PVC trim), that feature all the classic and latest architectural trim and siding profiles that can drastically change that ever important curb appeal for the better.

Replace an old or poorly designed deck Another popular trend in home design and functionality is living “inside out”. Cultural and consumer trends are taking us all outside to our decks and patios. Consider replacing your old, gray pressure treated pine decking with a new low maintenance synthetic decking. Deck railings are also offered in many options that are easy to install and aesthetically pleasing. Natural stone products are extremely popular for grade level entertaining such as a flagstone patio or outdoor cooking area.

Remodel your kitchen or master bathroom Remodeling Magazine reports to the industry every year a list of best Cost/ Value projects for homeowners. Every year kitchen remodeling is number one; master bathroom renovation is number two. These tasks will be the most costly of all the projects listed, but will probably give you your best return on investment. Think about when you go on vacation with your family and stay in a hotel or a rental home. If the kitchen and bathrooms are new and modern, doesn’t it set the tone for a great vacation? It is nice to have new and functional living necessities. Your guests, family, friend and/ or potential buyers will feel the same.

Finally, add some built in / custom cabinetry Family rooms, libraries, office areas and bedrooms are great living spaces to add custom cabinetry. Built in cabinetry adds class and organization. Store bought cabinets or shelving furniture will run the lower end of the cost curve, custom built –in cabinetry the higher end. Many new home buyers have told me they purchased their new home due to the custom cabinetry that was in the home. As I tell all of my clients, the best thing about investing in a home project or remodel is that you start “living the investment”. It’s not like purchasing a stock that you watch go up or down from your computer. You get to cook, eat and live in your new kitchen!

Hope this help Paige, good luck with your ROI projects! by Tim Burch Jr., CR — President, Burch Builders Group, Old Town Warrenton, VA. Past President/Chairman, Nat’l Association of the Remodeling Industry, Metro DC

July

Even though we have summer like temperatures several times, summer is now officially here. This brings up thoughts of picking strawberries, days at the pool, vacations at the beach and hikes in the mountains. In order to make time for all of the wonderful things that we like to do in summer, I know that I will be doing my shopping as close to home as possible and maybe taking the day off from cooking a little more often. My first stop will be the new Pop Pop’s Deli that has opened at Vint Hill. You may remember the wonderful Hog Wild barbecue of Winston “Winnie” Sharp, either from the side of the road or when he opened the Second Street Café in old town. After two years of operating the restaurant, Winnie longed to go back to just the catering side of things and he did, but now he has added a small deli shop at Vint Hill so we can all get a taste whenever we want, in addition to his catering. I am thrilled he has done this, just in time for summer. We have two new businesses opening in old town; DeJaVu will be opening on Main Street with women’s & children’s consignment clothing, in addition to vintage clothing and the new William Woodward School of Fine Art on Fifth Street will have visiting artists providing instruction for a variety of art classes. Near the Harris Teeter is the new Play N Trade Video Games store and in the New Baltimore area is Select Line Motors with a selection of quality used cars for you to browse through. Some other changes include the move of For a Dancer to Main St., next to Toddlin’ Time, which doubles their space and they will open a dance boutique in the fall. Tana’s Kitchen will be closed until July 19 to reduce their store size and then they will re-open and be doing pickup and delivery only. They hope to offer in-store sessions for their customers again in the future. There has been an application for an alcohol license for a Fratelli’s Restaurant (I am guessing Italian cuisine) and according to the address used they want to move in to one of the shops near Rankin’s Hardware.
