Can It Get Any Better Than This? Arguably, June is the greatest month of the year. Spring closes and summer begins late in the month which means vacations are in full swing for many. The calendar of events is overflowing in the Warrenton area with outdoor events, equestrian competitions, graduations, concerts and Father’s Day. June offers something for everyone. The Upperville Colt & Horse Show, the oldest horse show in America, takes place June 2nd through the 8th and features many local horse show competitors as well as those from around the US and abroad. Steeped in tradition, it extends a full seven days, and involves over two thousand horse and rider combinations from young children on ponies to leading Olympic and World Cup riders and horses. The grounds are spectacular and the weather is usually perfect. See both the Grand Prix and the other individual events throughout the week. www.upperville.com. Twilight Polo begins at Great Meadow May 31st through September 13th. Pretty women, handsome gents, sumptuous tailgates, warm summer evenings, and the excitement of pounding hooves make the night’s fun unforgettable. www.greatmeadow. org. Friday, June 6, offers us another First Fr!day on Main Street. My family and I enjoyed the one in May and we are looking forward to returning in June. The children had a great time and we reveled in the neighborly conversations. High school commencements take place in June for students from our area’s public and private schools. Families will reunite to celebrate at area restaurants, reflect on the accomplishments of their graduates and share philosophies concerning college life and beyond. The 4th Annual Steve Athey Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on June 16th at 1:00 P.M. at Evergreen C.C. in Haymarket, Virginia. Steve was a tremendous asset to our community serving on Town Council and establishing Warrenton-Fauquier Community Baseball which promotes our local semi-pro team, the Fauquier Gators. The league provides camps and scholarships to area students. For more info, email Brian Athey at brianathey@ aol.com. For more information on the Gators baseball season or their camp for children, visit www.fauquiergators.org. Home opener is May 31st at FHS. Father’s Day is June 15th, an obvious favorite of mine being a dad of four terrific children. There’s nothing better than hanging out with my family and visiting downtown to see the Car Show on Main Street followed by some ice cream. More info at The Partnership for Warrenton’s website at www.historicwarrenton.org.

June 21st, summer solstice, is on a Saturday this year. While most of you will be relishing the long daylight and forgetting the gray days of winter that seem so long ago, I’ll be celebrating my 48th birthday somewhere, maybe on Culpeper Street. The Bluemont Concert Series begins Saturday, June 21st. If you have never attended one of these outdoor events, this is the season to start. On warm Saturday summer evenings, families, neighbors and friends gather for world-class jazz, bluegrass, Celtic music, rock, zydeco, folk music and African dance. Many people bring picnics to enjoy during the show. Tickets are sold on site on Culpeper Street the night of the events. For more information log onto www.bluemont.org. The big news is the return of our Best of Warrenton survey. We are proud of our local businesses and delighted that we found a way for the community to honor a large majority of them. Warrenton is chock full of great places, people, services and shops. Pull out the enclosed ballot, fill it out and return it to us or, better yet, go online and complete the ballot through our website at www.warrentonlifestyle.com. You might even win our big cash prize just for entering! We enjoyed meeting so many of you at the Spring Festival this year, another perfect day outdoors in Warrenton. The volunteers at the Chamber of Commerce did an exceptional job of running everything smoothly. As always, we appreciate the kind words and suggestions we received that day. It means a lot to our team that works hard to put out this magazine every month and our advertisers who support us. Enjoy June, the unparalleled month!

Fantastic, Fruity and Fine… Make Yours Fauquier Wine By Jennifer Heyns A Little Light History Almost simultaneously with settling in Jamestown the new Virginians were intrigued by the winemaking process. Attempting to duplicate what had been taken for granted across the Atlantic Ocean proved more difficult than the settlers had imagined. Evidence of their efforts were discovered in 2004 when archaeologists at Jamestown revealed the oldest wine cellar known in our nation, housing ten 400-year old wine bottles. For the next 150 years Virginians tried and failed to be able to produce great wine from European grapes. The problem was finally identified by French winemaker Andrew Estave, who realized that in order to make a fine

Vi r g i n i a wine growers would have to first cultivate a grape native to American conditions. Deciding the challenge was beyond their capability, most American winemakers ceased to even try and the colonies appeased their palates by imbibing beer and whiskey. Thomas Jefferson, convinced that wine was better for the body than other spirits, launched a crusade to revive the 6

Virginia winemaking industry, but with little effect. Following 30 years with no luck, Jefferson purchased Monticello and commenced to grow native grapes. After selling 2000 acres of property adjoining his Charlottesville home to Italian agriculturist Philip Mazzei, who successfully cultivated hybrid grapes, an immediate interest in grapes and wine spread through the state. Unfortunately after 100 years of successfully growing Virginia grapes, the destruction of the south during the Civil War took with it most of the state’s vineyards. A few short decades later Prohibition entered the country leaving the winemaking industry all but dead. Vigorous Growth in the Past 50 Years By 1950 only 15 acres of Virginia soil was being used for grape growing and of mostly for direct consumption, not winemaking. As wine became legal and more socially acceptable in the 1960s and 1970s

Virginia began to spark interest in making the beverage again. “The wineries of the 1970s were the first wineries of modern day,” said Chris Pearmund, owner of Pearmund

Cellars in Broad Run and The Winery at LaGrange in Haymarket, “The first two operational wineries to open in Virginia were both very near to Fauquier County: Meredith in Middleburg and Farfalu in Flint Hill.” Pearmund noted that what began with a modest revival of the winemaking industry in the 1970s (a total of six statewide in 1979) has grown into a tremendous venture with nearly 150 wineries open today, supported by 300 vineyards containing approximately 3000 acres of grapevines. In fact Virginians have become so adept at growing quality grapes and producing delectable wines that it has become the fifth largest state in terms of wine production. Additionally, no county within Virginia is home to more wineries than Fauquier, with the exception of Albemarle, which is, not surprisingly, the home of Jefferson’s Monticello. “Last year Travel+Leisure Magazine named Virginia among the top five emerging wine markets to watch for along with New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Spain,” said Pearmund,

“and that really says something that we (a state) are competing with nations from around the world. Warrenton LifestyLe

It’s also a great source of pride for Virginians, he continued, the state used to be primarily known for peanuts and tobacco, so becoming acclaimed for quality wine brings a lot more regional pride. Pearmund, who in addition to owning two wineries of his own, is a partner in several other local wineries and vineyards. As successful as Virginia wineries have been at producing noble wines, Pearmund said they still have far to go in convincing residents to think locally. “Of all the wine sold in Virginia today,” he said, “only 25 percent is Virginia wine; we’re not yet a dominant force in the local markets.” The Delicate Balance of Local Wineries Today there are more than 15 wineries in Fauquier County alone, with the newest member, Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane (www.barreloak.com), having just opened its doors over the Memorial Day weekend. While each winery strives to be unique, Barrel Oak owners Brian and Sharon Roeder say that there is no rivalry between them, in fact it’s quite the opposite. Roeder noted that winery owners see each other as comrades and operate under the premise that the area is only as good as it’s worst vineyard. “A rising tide lifts all ships,” explained Roeder. As for having so many wineries nearby, Roeder said he isn’t worried because it’s actually helpful to have others so close at hand - one is a winery, many is a destination. One of the things that distinguishes Barrel Oak from its fellow wineries, aside from being the newest, is that it’s so doggone friendly. The Roeders have let their love of dogs run the show at Barrel Oak, from paw prints on bottle labels to their “dogs and wine” theme in the items they have for sale in the tasting room to the initials of the winery (BOW). To top it off, they have developed a rich red dessert wine that is exclusive to Barrel Oak called Chocolate Lab, named for the cocoa that has been infused into a mixture red wines and the fact that it is a laboratory experiment. The first thing that attracted the Roeders to the property that is now home to their vineyard winery and themselves was the fantastic mountain views. Guests can also capture the breathtaking views from the wineries large terrace where they can sit and enjoy the natural landscape while sipping a nice glass of wine.

For one day, guests will also be able to take advantage of other natural bounties at Barrel Oak Winery. On June 15 families (and their furry friends, of course) are invited to spend Father’s Day fishing in the ponds on the property. The winery will also be hosting a Fourth of July celebration throughout the July 4 weekend. Just a few miles away from Barrel Oak is Three Fox Vineyards (www. threefoxvineyards.com), which was established in 2002 by John and Holli Todhunter. The Todhunters have nestled their winery within their 50-acres of rolling hills amidst Virginia’s hunt country and the John Mosby Heritage area, yet equate a visit to their vineyard to a repose in Tuscany. “We want people to come and get away from the everyday stresses of life and enjoy some time in ‘Tuscany in Virginia’,”said John Todhunter. The semblance of life in Tuscany does not stop at the fine wine and picturesque scenery. Three Fox Vineyard’s winery shades a beautiful al fresco terrazzo and brick patio which overlooks the scenic mountain views as well as the on-site grass bocce courts, flower gardens and

Twilight in Tuscany. The very next day former associate pastor Kim Ciftci will be on-site presenting the third of five sessions to discuss the biblical references

creek side picnic areas. June will be a big month for Three Fox. In addition to the introduction of their first every Rosé, called Cano Pazzo Rosé, they will be hosting a series of events. During Father’s Day weekend dad’s are welcome to visit and enter a chipping contest for a souvenir glass. On June 21 guests are invited to bring blankets and a picnic in the evening and enjoy

to wine and how it connects to daily life in modern times. One of the oldest vineyards and wineries in the county is Naked Mountain Vineyard in Markham (www.nakedmtnwinery.com). Robert

and Phoebe Harper started cultivating their first vines at Naked Mountain in 1976 after finding their Rappahannock property unsuitable for grape growing. After six years of successful growing they opened their winery. Today Naked Mountain Vineyard is home to six acres of vines and a beautiful rustic winery with a tasting room and wine cellar. With decades of perfecting their wine production, the Harper’s were honored with the pleasure of having their wine chosen, not once, but twice at prestigious White House events; by President George H.W, Bush and then again by President Clinton. The vineyard now produces approximately 6000 cases of wine each year and took the gold medal at last year’s State Fair for their Petit Verdot. General manager Darlene Call says Naked Mountain wine isn’t just for presidents and heads of state, though. “We’re a very friendly winery,” said Call, “we love having people come out and visit us.” See Wineries on page 10 9

Wineries continued from Page 9

Call mentioned that wine lovers should join the vineyard’s 33rd Birthday BBQ on June 28. Reservations are required and guests will be delighted with live blue grass music, fabulous food and fine wines. The winery will also be hosting a winemakers dinner in conjunction with local chef Eric Stamer on July 19 for a gourmet five-course meal “featuring a different wine with each course”, said Call. Don’t tell anyone, but Jim Law has been growing grapes and making wine at Linden Vineyards (www.lindenvineyards.com)since 1983. “We’re trying to be the quiet winery,” said Law, “we love for people to come out, taste the wine and buy some if they enjoy it, but we don’t host big events or take large groups out of respect for our neighbors and the peaceful countryside.” Law prefers astounding guests with his superb wine than with his entertainment and said that he spends most of his time in the vineyard trying to nurture his vines so that they produce robust and sumptuous fruit. “We like to make our wines very simply and let the vineyard prove itself,” said Law. At present Linden Vineyards is home to 30 acres of vines producing over ten different varieties of grapes. While most vineyards produce wines that are a combination of fruit grown in their own vineyards and fruit purchased by other Virginia growers, Law prides himself in the fact that all Linden Vineyards wines are made strictly from the grapes grown on-

10

site. In addition to being able to visit the winery and taste Law’s varieties, patrons will also find Linden Vineyards wines at several upscale restaurants and shops in northern Virginia, D.C. and Charlottesville including Town Duck, The Grapevine and Iron Bridge, all in Warrenton. At Marterella Winery in Warrenton (www.marterellawines. com), owner Kate Marterella may be slow but she’s worth the wait. Last year Marterella Winery won five separate awards at the Virginia Governor’s Cup competition including taking silver for their 2003 Meritage. “I’m a little slower than most people,” she said with a laugh, “I like to give my wine a little more time in the barrel - just like people, wine needs time to mature.” She admits that while the wine is “drinkable” at the stage that most winemakers are ready to bottle and market their varieties, she prefers to let it sit a few months longer until it’s what she considers “pleasurable”. Marterella started her vineyard with five acres of vines in 2001 and opened her winery in 2006. When she began, she said, the property was literally a cow field and her office was a shed. Now guests to the winery will find a fabulous winery in a proper structure - the only winery patio to feature an Italian pizza oven. “We light the pizza oven every single day,” Marterella said, “this is the place where you can come for the really serene views and enjoy great wine and a pizza.” Along with her award-winning wines, visitors can come to Marterella Winery and meet Marterella’s soon-to-be famous vineyard dogs. Her five faithful companions were recently

photographed by Australian photo-journalists who are compiling their next version of Wine Dogs® the original winery dog book. On Saturday June 14 Marterella Winery will be co-hosting a wine dinner with the Marriott Ranch at Great Meadows. The event will include a mouthwatering meal, fabulous wine and live entertainment. Reservations can be made through Great Meadows. Although both Pearmund Cellars (www.pearmundcellars. com) and The Winery at LaGrange (www.wineryatlagrange. com) are fairly young they both sit amidst historic properties with eighteenth century manor houses giving them an air of permanence and endurance. “We like to do more than make wine here,” said owner Chris Pearmund, “what we sell is a memory.” Pearmund remembered a couple who visited the winery on a weekly basis and swore that they were going to petition to have the winery’s name changed to Therapy because of the calming effect Pearmund’s wine, winery and scenery had on them. Many more people must feel that way as well. Last year Pearmund Cellars was honored with the People’s Choice Award for Virginia’s favorite winery at the Virginia Wine Festival. During the weekend of July 4th, Pearmund Cellars will be celebrating their fifth anniversary with a celebration open to the public which will include grilled fair, yard games and wine. On July 19 and 20 Pearmund will be donating a portion of the tasting fees collects to the Fauquier SPCA. Also during

the summer both wineries will be hosting a blending seminar where attendees will learn to blend their own flavors and have a chance to help determine the winery’s next blend of house red.

Hunger happens every day. And every day FISH responds. A child should never go hungry. An elderly couple should not have to choose between buying their medicine and buying food this week. A homeless man needs a meal. FISH volunteers are there because it is the right thing to do. Fauquier FISH is a nondenominational Christian organization that assists Fauquier County residents in need. Our primary purpose is to assist those with unfortunate, urgent and unexpected needs and those in who find themselves in emergency situations. Help is also available to individuals and families with ongoing and recurring needs. The mission of Fauquier FISH is to provide basic living necessities that include food and payment for medical prescriptions. When faced with utility cut off and eviction notices, FISH helps with a payment towards rent, water and heat, and with other basic housing costs. Fauquier FISH exists totally through donations from individuals, organizations, businesses and churches. It is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt charitable organization that is run entirely by volunteers.

“FISH” came from? The fish is an ancient symbol for the Savior. Early Christians drew the symbol on the doorposts of their homes, on the walls of catacombs, and generally used it as a means of identifying themselves as those who belong to the LORD. The FISH organization uses this symbol of the Lord as well as the acronym: For Immediate Sympathetic Help (FISH) to demonstrate its commitment to Christian Community Service. FISH began in 1961 in England, it was founded by a pastor and his congregation who believed that one of the biggest problems of our times was our lack of concern for one another. FISH came to the United States in 1964 and quickly spread all across the country. There is no central organization; however, there are thousands of FISH Organizations worldwide. FISH has been serving the needy here in Fauquier County since 1983 and became a 501(c)(3) tax exempt charity in 2000. FISH is trying to bridge between See Hunger page 18

America’s bounty and those who cannot provide for themselves. We offer assistance to our neighbors, as well as helping them help themselves. FISH is able to serve the community because of donations of food, money and time. Without the generosity of these donations, FISH would not be able to survive. Fauquier FISH is thankful for the ongoing food and money donations from local churches, church groups, schools and associations received throughout the year. The Boy Scouts “Scouting For Food event in November each year has been a tremendous help and we’ve come to rely on those food donations. Local Girl Scouts and Brownies continue to help with food donations and stocking the shelves in the food bank. Promoting the value of community service to children is another way we fulfill our mission. As food prices rise, an increase in the number of people needing help is

expected. When schools close for the summer, FISH helps more low income families that receive school breakfast and lunch assistance during the school year. In 2007 more than 1800 Fauquier residents were served by the food

bank. We strive to provide a variety of well-balanced and nutritious foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This includes meats, eggs, dairy and fresh produce in addition to basic staples and

non-perishables. FISH is always looking for donations of non-perishable items such as; cereal, oatmeal, canned tuna, salmon, pancake mix, canned beef stew, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruit, hamburger helper, tuna helper, and pasta and sauce. Each summer, Fauquier FISH sponsors a School Supplies Giveaway to serve the needy children of Fauquier County. Our Annual School Supply Giveaway has grown through the years both in the number of children served and in the participants in the community that help make this program a success. In 2007 FISH provided supplies to over 350 Fauquier County students. Each student received a new backpack, all of his or her needed supplies according to their specific school list, a toiletry bag including items such as shampoo and a new toothbrush, and a $20 gift card for each student to buy new shoes or new school clothes. no paid staff; all donations go right into the program services for the benefit of our clients. Helping others in need is such an important part of the American way of life. Through countless acts of kindness, and unbridled commitment and care these volunteers help to improve the lives of our neighbors for the better. It’s how we respond to the needs of our neighbors, our children, our senior citizens, our disabled and our working poor that demonstrate our strength as a community. Food bank volunteers work in teams of 2 at the Lee Street food bank in old town Warrenton. They volunteer once a month to give out food for approximately 2 hours. The Fauquier Health System

Fauquier Hospital campus will go tobacco free

O

n July 4, Fauquier Health System will take an important step toward clearing the air. The health system’s Warrenton campus -which includes Fauquier Hospital, Warrenton Overlook Health and Rehabilitation Center, the Medical Office Building on Hospital Hill, the doctors’ offices behind the hospital and the surrounding grounds -- will be a tobaccofree zone beginning on Independence Day. It’s hard to miss the symbolism. Health system president and CEO Rodger Baker said that he is delighted that Fauquier will join the thousands of other healthcare facilities around the nation in going tobacco free. “As the largest healthcare organization in the area, it is time for us to take a stand for the health of our community. Heart disease is a huge issue in our community, and smoking is a major contributor. We are very excited to be able to offer our patients and their families healthier surroundings, where everyone can breathe easier.” Although steadfast in its commitment to a tobacco-free environment, health system leaders recognize that some staff, patients, volunteers and visitors do smoke. They understand that nicotine is highly addictive and quitting can be extremely difficult. Every effort is being made to ease the transition to a tobacco-free campus. For patients who smoke, doctors can order a nicotine patch on admission. The patch, which releases nicotine through the skin, will ease cravings during a hospital stay. Visitors older than 18 who smoke will be offered complimentary nicotine gum to chew while on campus, if they choose. About 34 staff members are enrolled in a smoking cessation program offered by the Health System. Those trying to quit are working with anti-smoking coaches who offer support and encouragement. Medication and counseling supplement the program. The health system will also host a community discussion on smoking cessation on July 2 at 7 p.m. in Sycamore Room A at the hospital. The gathering will be led by Dr. Robert Iadeluca, a clinical psychologist who is an expert on addiction. 28

The much-anticipated tobacco-free initiative is in keeping with other Fauquier Health System plans for a healthier community. • The recently renovated L.I.F.E. Center is a medically based fitness facility open to everyone. No physician referral is necessary. • The health system sponsors numerous community health screenings – for diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and more – throughout the year • Educational offerings include the very popular Mini-Medical School and programs for new mothers. Lectures by local doctors – on joint replacement, sleep disorders or first aid, for instance – are regular features on the health system calendar. • A wellness program for employees focuses on nutrition, exercise and preventative care.

Delighting Dad By Jennifer Heyns Mother’s Day is a fabulous way to show appreciation for what is generally thought of as the hardest job in the world. But now that May is behind us and the mothers of the world have been vindicated, appreciated, dined and dated it’s time to focus on dad, who may truly be the least appreciated member of our families. Billy Graham said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Moms, if you think scrubbing the toilet is dirty work and the laundry is a never-ending, thankless task, just think about all of the grungy, grueling and on-going tasks that we ask our men to do. The lawn demands their attention from April to November, the vehicles are in constant need of maintenance, and don’t even get me started on the gutters. Thank goodness dad is always there to the rescue, be it squashing bugs or protecting us from wouldbe thugs - he is there, non-stop, unflinching, and ready to take on the world. In order to show our appreciation this year, give some extra thought to what dad really likes. You know how they’re always getting teased.

30

“The only difference between men and boys is the sizes of their toys.” Truer words have never been spoken, but what’s wrong with indulging the youthful, masculine, even macho, side of the men who complete our lives? One thing is for certain, dads come in all different shapes and sizes and each has his own unique set of interests. Some are into age-old activities like hunting, fishing and camping; getting a thrill from living off the land emulating their ancestors from hundreds of years ago. These are the men for whom the good old days loom in their hearts; rugged and outdoorsy often believing that they were born after their time. Men like these make us feel safe and protected; they can build a fire in under a minute, a shelter in a matter of hours and can provide dinner without the aid of a grocery store or restaurant. While hunting and fishing are great ways to put dinner on the table, they are also for sport or just plain relaxation. Glenn Rankin, who owns Rankin’s True Value Hardware, said that he absolutely loves hunting and a great Father’s Day gift for him would be new arrows for his bow or fishing accessories. “Our store is a great place to find items for any outdoors activity: hunting, fishing, camping,” he said. A hint for moms or kids looking for a fishing gift for dad this year: Rankin noted that Zebco fishing reels are the best you can get and are still the same today as they were years ago - the good stuff never changes. Other great things you can find for your outdoorsman at Rankin’s include charcoal or propane grills, Black & Decker tools, Case pocket knives (many of which have brightly colored handles so dad can’t loose it in the grass) and Stanley work tables. “Automatic tape rules are great gifts,” suggested Rankin, “they automatically go out to the length you need and then See Dads on Page 32

automatically retract.” Tony Wilcox, owner of Tony Wilcox Ltd., said that as a father the best gift he could receive would be something that he can play with in the yard, something that gets him outside and moving around. He’s not into new and i n novat ive inventions what he terms techno gadgets - he’d much prefer to get something old. “I like historical arms from America’s past,” said Wilcox, which is exactly what he sells in his Old Town Warrenton shop, “pieces dating back to the Civil War, the Wild West or World War II.” Wilcox noted that his store is filled with “usable collectibles” and ranges 32

from antique rifles to modern handguns. Antique weaponry, he said, appreciates in value and will give dad a sense of awe to be able to touch, admire and use a great piece of American history. The most important thing, Rankin pointed out, is to make sure you give dad the gift of time as well. Giving gear to use when dad goes hunting or fishing is nice, but if he never has the time to go hunting or fishing then the gift can never truly be appreciated. Many dads derive joy from being able to relax and enjoy the comforts of life like playing a round of golf, smoking a Stogy or taking a long drive in a sporty car or a manly motorcycle. Often described as the “man-child”, these guys are exciting

to be around with their never-ending need for speed, their ebullient way of play. Men like this live in the moment, enjoying all that life has to offer right now. They do not cling to yesterday, nor long for tomorrow. “Whoever designed the whole scheme of things, putting Mother’s Day first, was a genius,” joked Gary Amato, co-owner of The Grapevine with his wife, Cathy, “The question of how well your father’s day goes depends on how well you did on Mother’s Day.” He’s not worried, though he said he’s taught his children that for the same amount of money that you can buy dad a cheap tie, you can get him a top notch cigar. The key, he said, is to get dad something he can appreciate and use immediately. “At The Grapevine we have a walkin humidor,” said Amato, “filled with great, fresh, hand-rolled cigars.” For moms who are a little wary of selecting a proper cigar for their hubbies, Amato assures that he will be there to See Dads on Page 34 Warrenton Lifestyle

give personalized service to help with the decision-making. The Grapevine also carries tawny, ruby and vintage Port wines, imported and micro-brew beers and ales and can make dad a gift basket of any combination of items from the store. Of course the best time to sit back and relax with a glass of Port and a cigar would be after a long day at the links. General Manager Robert Kirksey of Golf Tour Trailer Game Improvement Center and Jamie Gravett, co-owner of Chip Shot can help get dad outfitted and in-step with his game. “We have tons of stuff here,” said Gravett, “anything from The World’s Greatest Dad golf towels to golf clothing, shoes and bags.” Kirksey can help dad out with a custom-fitted set of golf clubs to help improve his game. If a bad day at golf is better than a good day anywhere else, imagine how great dad will feel after a great day at golf! “When you get a set of golf clubs properly fitted to you,” said Kirksey, “you improve your posture and attain proper 34

lie and loft.” At Golf Tour dad can also take golf lessons or practice on the full-service driving range or putting green. And the great thing is that dad can swing all day long on any day regardless of the weather

since the range is covered. “There are a lot of things I would like to have this father’s day,” said Kirksey, “but it would probably all have to do with golf. New shoes and a hat are always a good choice.” Although they have a wide array of golf attire and accessories, Gravett

assures that Chip Shot has a lot of other types of unique and quality gifts for dad. “Really popular this year,” said Gravett, “are the TrionZ bracelets. A lot of sports figures are wearing them now and the new ones are much sportierlooking.” Gravett explained that the magnetic, therapeutic bracelets help circulate iron through the bloodstream and can alleviate pain from achy muscles or arthritis. He also mentioned that the store has a large collection of Tommy Bahama clothing and accessories. “There are a lot of unique and designer things here, which is great because now you don’t have to drive all the way to Tyson’s or Fair Oaks to find these items,” said Gravett. Still other fathers are happiest while reveling in the latest and greatest that the technological world has to offer. These savvy men embrace the tides of change, riding every wave to its height. Men like this inspire and challenge those around them to be the best in life. They strive for perfection See Dads on Page 36 Warrenton LifestyLe

and look for it in the tools they use to accomplish their goals. While they have confidence in where they stand today, they are always looking forward to doing better tomorrow. Timely Express Shack, “and the great thing is that the prices keep coming down and the items continue to get smaller, simpler and easier to operate. Radio Shack, according to Littleton, is virtually (no pun intended) bursting at the seams with innovative ideas for dad. The number one seller during different holidays, said Littleton, is the digital picture frame, which you can plug your camera’s memory card into and your photos rotate like on your computer’s screen saver. The store also serves as a DirecTV dealer and currently stocks several new receivers for improving dad’s television viewing pleasure. They now have a high-definition receiver, a DVR receiver and a combination hi-def/DVR receiver. “These are great for sports fans, admitted Littleton, “I’m a dad, too and I have to tell you there’s nothing better than watching sports in hi-def. Another great option, especially for the dad who spends a lot of his time in the car, is a satellite radio. “We have the Sirius satellite radio, too, said Littleton, “which is great for dads like me who are Dallas fans because you get to hear the games that you can’t see on TV and then you have NASCAR on Sundays and also news and talk groups. The best thing is that even mom can install a satellite radio. Littleton said that the radio tuner can be suctioncupped to the windshield or dash and the antenna is placed on the exterior of the car with a magnet. Other great gifts for gadget-gaga dads are cell phones, palm pilots, blackberries, and metal detectors - all of which can be found at Radio Shack of Warrenton. “A lot of these devices can really break up the monotony of long commutes and improve the way dad does business, said Littleton. 36
