My Favorite Time of the Year

I can’t help it. I love the month of June. For me, no other month stands up to it for weather, events and personal meaning. The full bloom of Spring transitions to the most comfortable part of Summer. Our family calendar is booked solid with vacations, outdoor events, equestrian competitions, graduations, concerts and Father’s Day events. The big news is the Fifth Annual Best of Warrenton survey. We are proud of our local businesses and delighted that we found a way for the community to honor a large majority of them. Warrenton features great places, people, services and shops. Pull out the enclosed ballot, fill it out and return it to us or, better yet, go online and complete the ballot through our website at www.warrentonlifestyle.com. You might even win our big $300 cash prize just for entering! We started the survey to help create awareness of all that we have available in our community, to enable you to consider shopping locally. Only area businesses, people and organizations are eligible. Here are some of my favorites: Friday, June 2, offers us another First Friday on Main Street. My family and I enjoy these community evenings immensely. The children have a great time and Holly and I revel in the neighborly conversations. The Partnership for Warrenton has done a terrific job of providing us with a monthly, first-rate, family event. Music, crafts, food and, of course, many of our local merchants will remain open. The Pacemakers 5K/10K to benefit the Fauquier Free Clinic runs at Airlie Conference Center in Warrenton, Virginia on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at 8:00am. Go online to register at www.fauquierfreeclinic. org. Run for fun (and a good cause) or challenge yourself and try to keep pace with Executive Director of the Free Clinic, Rob Marino. High school commencements take place in June for students from our area’s public and private schools. Families will reunite to celebrate at area restaurants, reflect on the accomplishments of their graduates and share philosophies concerning college life and beyond. The Fifth Annual Steve Athey Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, June 21 at noon at Evergreen C.C. in Haymarket, Virginia. Steve was a tremendous asset to our community serving on Town Council and establishing Warrenton-Fauquier Community Baseball. His family uses the funds raised for the Steve Athey Memorial Scholarship Fund as well as for maintenance of the Steve Athey Memorial Ballpark at Fauquier High School. Steve loved golf and baseball and used both games as mechanisms to promote education through sports in our community. 6

The 157th Upperville Colt & Horse Show, the oldest horse show in America, takes place Monday, June 7, thru Sunday, June 13, 2010 and features many local competitors as well as those from around the US and abroad. Steeped in tradition, it extends a full seven days, and involves over two thousand horse and rider combinations from young children on ponies to leading Olympic and World Cup riders and horses. The grounds are spectacular and the weather is usually perfect. www.upperville.com. Pretty women, handsome gents, sumptuous tailgates, warm summer evenings, and the excitement of pounding hooves means it is time for Twilight Polo at Great Meadow, now through September 18th. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. each Saturday. The crowd favorites will continue this year with entertaining half-time activities, tailgate competitions and dancing under the stars in the Meadow Club polo pavilion after polo. www.greatmeadow.org. Enjoy the Heritage Lecture Series on Sunday, June 13 at 3:00 pm featuring The South: A Prophet of Culture in the AntiCulture. I get the longest day of the year to ponder, “What should I do with the rest of my life?” Of course, I have inspiration in one of our featured writers, Dr. Robby Iadeluca, who went back to school after the age of 50 and began another 30+ year career. Or, I’ll just take a nap.

Once upon a time in an exceptional but not so far away place there were two unique businesswomen who still believed in the magic of fairytales. Pampered Princess and Princess Genevieve of the Magical Kingdom of Azuria are two new businesses in Warrenton that accommodate little girls’ birthday parties. While both businesses believe in a whimsical and royal style to entertaining the little ones, each has their own approach. Pampered Princess opened its doors in March as the town’s only day spa that is specifically for young girls. Cristin Hall, owner, always imagined herself opening a business. Hall’s initial thought was to open a deli, which transformed into an idea for a place to hold children’s birthday parties. Finally, her brainstorming spiraled into a pink princess-themed spa. Hall, mother of two teenage boys, ran with the idea and recruited best friend Linda Ramey, also a mother of all boys, to help bring life to this idea. In September of 2009, orders were placed for brightly colored chic equipment, furniture and decorations. “I’ve always loved the color pink,” Hall said. The “Café Pink” painted walls with bright white trim, hot pink feathered boa’s hug the columns, lime green and purple polka dotted accents on the wall invite girls from the ages of 3-12 to get pampered like royalty. A polka dotted tablecloth with brilliant pink chairs and a balloon centerpiece fill the room as well as a popcorn machine. Popcorn and pink lemonade served in champagne glasses are offered to the girls. “Pampered Princess” allows you the option to choose from package deals that may include cake, cupcakes, pizza and princess-themed goody bags. Your princess will be presented with a tiara to wear for the day, and the party group will be photographed. The picture will be placed in a princess frame and given to the birthday girl. Currently Pampered Princess is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am – 6pm. Hall anticipates that in July the spa will be open additional days to include Tuesday through Friday. inspiration. It is said that Azuria is in existence but cannot be found on any map because of the vast fields of four leaf clovers, but it is there. Azuria, “is a beautiful island with soft white sand, glittering turquoise waters, and snow capped mountains. Here, unicorns graze on four leaf clovers that grow like grass and rainbows stay the whole day.”

The students at The Boxwood School were given a royal treat when Princess Genevieve stopped by for story time. Princess continued from page 10 Jennifer Faulconer, the creator behind Princess Genevieve of the Magical Kingdom of Azuria, took a different approach to entertaining children and immersed herself in a kingdom all her own. Faulconer, an active participant in the Fauquier Community Theatre, received a seemingly simple request, to make an appearance as a princess at a girl’s birthday party. “It was perfect for me, so of course I was excited to do it,” Faulconer said. After that initial appearance as Princess Genevieve, Faulconer started to realize this character was someone who could be a positive, wholesome role model among young girls encouraging etiquette, graciousness, thoughtfulness and creativity. Faulconer began building a kingdom around her character Princess Genevieve, whose name came from the name she used to call herself when she played. “In the beginning when I was creating Azuria, I had to sleep with paper and pen by my bed because I was flowing with ideas. Sometimes I would just sit and 12

Lady Elizabeth Reade (a real family name), is Princess Genevieve’s cousin “who finds proper etiquette in children to be a most charming attribute.” And Prince Thomas the Lyon Hearted, he is courageous and supports bravery and kind-heartedness. This enchanting place encourages “Truth, Grace, and Wisdom,” which is the official motto. “It’s important for children to still be kids, they can have fun but they should be kind and embrace their creativity and imagination,” Faulconer said, “Children should create their own story!” Princess Genevieve makes appearances at birthday parties leading the Royal Coronation, sing-a-longs, royal etiquette, and favors from her home in Azuria. She also serves the birthday cake and poses for princess photos! Birthday parties aren’t the Princesses only specialty; she does Azuria Etiquette Classes, Magical Story Time, Mommy & Me Events, Daddy’s Little Princess Royal Ball, Girl Scout Badges and Awards, Princess Phone Calls and Skype Video Chats. Fauquier Health Large Bore MRI Now Available at Fauquier Hospital Fauquier Health is the first in the area to offer the large bore MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) system that offers a much wider bore (opening) for larger or claustrophobic patients. The new MRI was available for the first time on Sunday, May 16, and the response from patients was overwhelming. Dr. James Koepke, diagnostic radiologist for Virginia Radiology Associates, is enthusiastic about the new equipment. “This is going to be terrific for the community. Now, folks who are uncomfortable in a traditional MRI don’t have to travel long distances to have a wide bore MRI. And the Sunday time slot is going to be great, especially for those who work long hours in D.C.” MRI uses radio waves to produce images of the brain and body. It can reveal delicate structures in the spinal chord, the head and brain, the soft tissues around and in joints and many other organs such as kidneys and liver. Reflections On Life

A Tribute To My Teachers by Robert B. Iadeluca

High school graduation ceremonies will soon remain solely in the memories of the recent graduates. My own mind goes back years – decades – to the Great Depression year of 1937 when I marched down the aisle of the school auditorium as freshmen, sophomores, and juniors sang “Out in the cold cold world.” I remember the building on the south shore of Long Island with the inscription on the front: “Enter to Learn. Go Forth to Serve.” With the exception of my parents, the elementary and high school teachers who molded me for 12 years had more to do with preparing me for the cold world than any other academic influence including college and university. Although called Islip High School, the building housed all 1200 students from Kindergarten through senior high school, serving our community of 3500. My fellow graduating high school students were, with rare exceptions, the very same ones who played with me in Kindergarten. The high school teachers knew most of us by the time we reached second grade. Thanks to my mother’s instruction, I was able to read (usually bus car cards) by the time I was two and a half years old. I was almost immediately skipped to second grade. Miss Gifford was a kind teacher who played games with us as we tried to locate the blackboard eraser hidden in the cloakroom. She also quickly introduced us to poetry and soon I was reciting “My Shadow” by Robert Louis Stevenson. Third grade with Miss Flynn meant buckling down to real studying, with oral reading where we were required to stand up, and silent reading, while 26

seated, but with the teacher watching carefully that we were not moving our lips. That year also introduced us to penmanship, a skill requiring us to hold the pen properly and to “draw” a long line of perfect circles. Nurses at Fauquier Hospital tell me that my handwriting is more legible than most doctors. An important aside – there were no ballpoint pens in those days. Each desk had a hole in which was placed an ink well and each student was issued a pen in which we inserted a pen tip. Before the insertion, we placed the new tip in our mouths and very carefully licked off the protective oil. The inkwell containing ink was conveniently located behind the hair of the girl seated in front (shades of Tom Sawyer?) Miss Baldwin, fourth grade teacher, was a no-nonsense person. We not only had to read and write but also spell. Spelling bees were almost daily. Geography was fun. I remember drawing a map of New York State, placing correctly the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains, the Hudson River, and Lake Erie. She also introduced us to Miss Avery, a music teacher who brought in her 78 rpm records, played various classical pieces, and then explained them to us. The class was divided – half hated music lessons and half loved them. The world of music spoke to me immediately and my parents, recognizing this, invested in a violin and private music lessons for me. We were not prepared for the perceptive observation of Miss Williams, fifth grade teacher. She was acutely aware that I was capable of encouraging Teachers continued on page 28 Warrenton Lifestyle

Teachers continued from page 26 others to commit dastardly acts. Three times that year I heard the dreaded words “go to the Principal’s office,” accompanied by the warning that I was “skating on thin ice.” Apparently, the hormones were beginning to flow. In sixth grade, Mrs. Coates was quiet and kind and fortunately so because, unbeknownst to me, tragedy was about to enter my life. I sailed easily through the early part of the semester with my mother following her usual custom of asking me daily about my school work and once a month, examining my report card and signing it. More often than not, however, she was giving me this guidance from a sick bed. One morning as she was lying in bed signing my report card, she fell back on the pillow, convulsing. The next day she was dead. I still have the report card where she had gone as far as signing her first name and my father later completed the last name.

The principal had known my mother well. In subsequent years, if I ended up in his office, he would quietly say, “Is that the way your mother would have wanted it?” I would dissolve in tears and that put me on the right track for a few more months. In those days, there was no such thing as middle school. First grade through eighth grade was called “Grammar School,” culminating in a graduation ceremony. The same four teachers alternated between 7th and 8th Grades – Miss Horton introducing us to history, Miss Winegard moving us on to algebra, Mrs. Warner helping us to write and speak correctly, and Miss Handel guiding us in art. As we moved up grade by grade, we knew that there was no such thing as social promotion. We were not promoted simply because we sat at a desk for a year.

Students could be “left back” although that never happened to my class. Moreover, the term “attendance teacher” did not exist. George Wills was both the school janitor and the truant officer. If for some unexplained reason a student was not present, one hour later he was at the house asking why. “High School” was a completely new story. We were no longer cajoled or urged to do our work. We were expected to do it. While all subjects were considered important, proper use of language was paramount. There was no gum chewing in class and one person spoke at a time. Even in casual speech, the word “ain’t” was not permitted. As for profanity, the thought of using it was far from anyone’s mind. Miss Goodrich not only guided us through indicative and subjunctive moods, participles and gerunds, verb conjugations and noun declensions, but also led us into the world of literature. We examined man’s struggle against fate in Melville’s Moby Dick; in Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables, we impressionable students were introduced to guilt, retribution, and atonement; and in reading Mark Twain’s “Life on the Mississippi,” we students (especially the boys) lived vicariously on the water. Not only was she knowledgeable in literature, but Miss Goodrich was, I believe, a frustrated Broadway actress. When it came to poetry, she was not at the front of a classroom but on a stage. Teachers continued from page 28 her emphasizing the “s” sound in “the silken sad uncertain rustling of the purple curtains” as she pointed out the alliteration in Poe’s “The Raven.” Shakespeare lived in Macbeth as the witches (and the teacher) danced around the caldron singing: “Double, double toil and trouble; fire burn and caldron bubble.” Science was another world. Each year we progressed up from General Science through Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Over seventy years have passed yet Mr. Wood’s basic training enables me to understand the major concepts of newer scientific developments. The other male teacher, Mr. Johnson, (most teachers were female in those days) taught Shop where I built an interior room complete with electric wiring, overhead lights, plumbing, sliding doors, and smoothly painted ceiling and walls. Miss Hubbs’ two years of French helped me during combat in France and later

landed me a French war bride. My three years of Latin enable me to decipher English words I have never seen before because of their Latin derivation. I was not on the Varsity team, not having enough money for insurance and uniforms, but I played baseball with a reputation as a good hitter and outfielder. I also spent much time playing tennis and running the 880 and the mile. Little did I know that constantly running track would prepare me for the infantry only five years later. Football was not permitted because a student had once died on the field. Each day as we entered the gym our attention was caught by a plaque in his honor: “When the one great scorer comes to write against your name; he writes not that you won or lost but how you played the game.” The last two months prior to graduation, Miss Goodrich assigned the class a project to write a composition with the theme “Who I would like to be more than anyone else.” Expecting topics such

as Lincoln, Washington, etc., she was completely floored when I told her that I wanted to be myself. This led to my standing on the stage the night of high school graduation reciting my essay, “On the Desirability of Being Myself.” This belief has never changed and I attribute it to the love and dedication of my mother, followed by the skill and determination of every single elementary and high school teacher in my life. Long before I entered college, these teachers taught me how to successfully direct my own learning. As I stepped out into the “cold cold world” of the Great Depression, I was equipped to succeed. I knew self-control. I knew how to focus. My education went far beyond the subjects typically taught in schools. I had been placed on the path to lifelong learning. I had become well-rounded, prepared either to enter the business world or to continue formal schooling. Thank you, my dear mentors, for helping me to live, not just to exist.

Remembering those who served in Korea 60 years later

by John Toler Ten years ago, Fauquier County was designated a 50th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemorative Community, and a series about local Korean War veterans was published. Readers learned, perhaps for the first time, about the experiences of their neighbors who were veterans of what some called “The Forgotten War.” Stories involving Warrenton men included Jimmy Rankin’s experiences as a combat paratrooper who participated in the re-taking of the POW camp on KojeDo Island; the desperate withdrawal of Norman Wampler’s unit to the south after the unexpected Chinese invasion; Jim Pride’s ‘round-the-clock duty on the USS Valley Forge, the only aircraft carrier in the vicinity when the North Koreans invaded South Korea; and Eugene Reid’s survival for more than two years as a POW of the Chinese. One more compelling story that did not get told for the 50th anniversary involved a young Marine from Fauquier who narrowly missed having his name listed with the Korean War dead honored on the Fauquier Veterans Memorial on Hospital Hill. Now, with 2010 marking the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, the story of John Randolph Embrey, 79, should be told. As a boy growing up in Rectortown during World War II, Embrey first became aware of the U. S. Marine Corps when he saw his neighbor, John Crosby Butler -in training as a Marine fighter pilot -- fly over Kelvedon Farm, his parents’ home June 2010

Sent to Fight in Korea Embrey’s unit left California aboard the USS General Brewster for the 21-day voyage to Japan, where they stayed briefly before reaching Korea on Sept. 2, 1952. Originally trained as an artilleryman, Embrey was first assigned to a tank repair unit seven miles behind the front lines, in the vicinity of “Bunker Hill,” in western Korea north of the 38th Parallel. His first assignment was fairly secure, but he was soon sent as a replacement to a base camp on the front lines. “Everybody was dug into bunkers, which were holes with thick roofs to protect us,” said Embrey. “There were four men to a bunker, and for every four bunkers there was a machine gun bunker. In front of the bunkers was a trench line that ran every which way.” Embrey added that while the trenches offered protection from enemy snipers, they were usually full of water. “If you stuck a helmet up above the trench line, you would probably draw sniper fire within 10 seconds.” After about a month at the base camp, Embrey was sent to an outpost known as “Reno,” on one of the hilltops above the 38th Parallel known as the “Nevada Cities.” A prime observation post just 42

300 feet from enemy lines, “Reno” was manned by 49 Marines and one Navy medic, and was constantly under attack by the Red Chinese. Because of Allied air superiority during the day, virtually all enemy attacks occurred after dark, and the outpost defenders would hole-up in their bunkers and foxholes and return fire. Embrey was supposed to be relieved from outpost duty the next day, but on the rainy night of Oct. 26, 1952, the Chinese started hammering “Reno” with an artillery barrage, followed by an attack by large force of Chinese infantry. Many of the enemy troops didn’t have rifles, and were armed only with “potato masher” concussion hand grenades “… that could knock you out when they went off,” said Embrey. “The ones who didn’t have guns came over to get them from us.” “Our bunker had a hole blown in the roof, and there were three of us in it,” recalled Embrey. “About two in the morning, the Reds came over, but all I ever saw of them was when they would run back-and-forth in front of the bunker…I would wait until I saw one,

and then let him have it.” At the height of the battle, Embrey was firing out of the front of the bunker, while one of the other Marines was in the corner on a radio calling for reinforcements. The third man lay on the floor, wounded. “I had just come down from the entrance to reload when a Red found the hole in the roof of the bunker,” said Embrey. “He sprayed the whole inside of the bunker with a Russian burp gun (a small-caliber, rapidfire automatic weapon).” “I was lucky because I was standing up,” Embrey continued. “I was hit nine times, in the hand, arm and hip, but none of the bullets went through because of the angle of the shot. The other two men were killed.” As the attack continued to rage outside, the Navy medic found Embrey suffering from his wounds and administered a heavy dose of morphine before moving on to other casualties. Within a short period of time, the Chinese overran the outpost, and killing the wounded Marines they found, and stripping them of their weapons and gear. KOREA continued on page 44

Due to his wounds and the effects of the morphine, the attackers thought that Embrey had been killed as well. “I felt them take off my flak jacket, and go through my shirt, with their tiny, ice-cold hands,” recalled Embrey. “Then they sat on my stomach and my chest, smoking cigarettes they had found, and talking.” Throughout this ordeal, Embrey lay still, thinking about his home in Rectortown. “I asked the good Lord that if He would send me home alive, I would thank Him every night. And I still do.” A Marine force re-took “Reno” early the next morning. They found Embrey in the bunker, and administered first aid. Of the 50 men on the outpost, it was later reported that 30 were killed and 18 wounded in the battle, including Embrey. “A stretcher party took me back to the line, and they hoisted me up in a helicopter that took me to a hospital ship off the coast,” said Embrey. On board the ship, Embrey had two operations to remove the bullets

and repair the wounds. While on the operating table, a Navy surgeon asked him how old he was. Embrey replied that he was 21, but would turn 22 the next month. “I have some good news,” replied the surgeon. “You’ll celebrate your next birthday at home.” Well, not quite. Recovery and Homecoming After an extended stay in the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan, Embrey was promoted to Pfc. (private first class) and transferred to Bethesda Naval Hospital. He was allowed to return to his beloved Rectortown between physical therapy treatments, a privilege he exercised often. After five-and-a-half months, he was ready to return to duty, and was given his choice of assignments. He chose Quantico Marine Corps Base, where he was part of a demonstration team that trained young Marine officers. “I volunteered to be the wounded Marine who gets airlifted from the battlefield in a basket hanging from a helicopter,” said Embrey. In addition to actually having lived the role, “I didn’t have to fire my rifle, so I didn’t have to clean it,” he chuckled.

Embrey completed his Marine Corps active duty on Feb. 11, 1954, and stayed in the inactive reserve for six more years. “I could have been called back, but I wasn’t,” he explained. Now at home for good, he worked in the drywall trade for about 30 years before getting into home construction. “I built about 12 houses in the Marshall area before I retired,” he added. After retirement, Embrey became involved with the Fauquier Heritage Society in Marshall, where he served as a director, as well as creating a museum of his own in the old Northern Virginia Farm Center building in Rectortown, which he purchased in 1998. There, he shares his extensive collection of antique farm equipment and agricultural tools with other enthusiasts, school groups and historians. Randolph Embrey has seen a lot and done a lot in his 79 years, and is justly proud of the sacrifice he witnessed, and personally endured, in Korea. What sustained him in battle is still with him today: his faith, and his love of his home, Rectortown.

Let’s Get Social Harnessing the power of social media to his Twitter account through service called Twitpic (http://twitpic. com/135xa). And once it landed in one of the largest and most viral social networks (105 million registered users in 2010), the image was quickly passed around and seen by hundreds of thousands of people. Thiry four minutes after taking the picture, Krums was interviewed by MSNBC.

Everyone remembers the Miracle on the Hudson, the storybook moment on January 15th, 2009 when U.S. Airways Flight 1549 successfully crash-landed in New York’s Hudson River. Some may also remember the first picture taken at the crash site, a picture of passengers standing on a wing of the floating jet, waiting to be rescued. A picture taken by a passenger on a ferry diverted to the scene and the first ship to arrive. That dramatic picture was taken on an iPhone by Janis Krums of Sarasota Florida, who became a ‘citizen reporter’ when he posted the image from his iPhone 46

A local example of the way social media keeps me informed: on December 30, 2009, two sheriff’s deputies were wounded by an inmate in a holding cell in the Fauquier County Courthouse. I was first alerted to this important hometown story via Facebook, where I noticed a message posted by Holly Tedeschi, co-publisher of this magazine, asking “what’s going on at the courthouse”

That got my attention. Notice how the message came from her iPhone, which has an application that makes it incredibly simple to access and use Facebook. Within minutes, others

in Warrenton connected to Holly on Facebook began weighing in with specific information about the incident. Thankfully, both deputies recovered and the inmate was captured. I use these as examples of the way social media has transformed the way we communicate and consume information and news. Often I’m told by people who have yet to embrace social media platforms: “I hear all people talk about is what they had for lunch, stupid stuff like that. Sounds like one big waste of time.” My response is that becoming part of the Social Web can be a time waster … or a great way to explore, connect, share, communicate, market, sell, network, learn, and help people in ways unimagined just a few years ago. Bottom line, it’s what you make of it. And with today’s smart phones, you can easily tap the power of social media anywhere, anytime. For many, social networks are a great way to reconnect and stay connected with family and friends. The fastest growing demographic on Facebook is age 55 plus which grew at a rate of nearly 1,000 percent from 2008 to 2009. Facebook is the world’s largest social network with some 450 million active users (approximately 120 million in

The project is scheduled for completion in time for the 3rd Anniversary of the Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility (WARF) in September, 2010. This will be only the second “Boundless” playground in all of Virginia. The actual details on the construction timetable will follow, as they become available, but the contract with the playground provider has been signed and delivered. Although we are moving forward with construction at this time, we still have approximately $70,000 to raise. Please help spread the word. Celebrate Warrenton’s 200th

History Book & Events Planned

Operating under a grant from the Town of Warrenton, the Partnership for Warrenton Inc. is planning several events and the publication of a history of the town, founded in 1810, in celebration of its 200th anniversary year. The schedule of events for the remainder of 2010 will be announced later, and work on the history book is now underway. In early May, a committee was organized by John S. “Sparky” Lewis, chairman of the Partnership Board of Directors, to begin the planning for the history book. Agreeing to take on the task are Cheryl Shepherd of Warrenton, a well-known architectural historian; John T. Toler of Broad Run, a member of the Fauquier Historical Society Board who coauthored the Fauquier County history book published in 2008; and Lawrence K. Emerson of Warrenton, former copublisher of the Fauquier Citizen. Publication of the book, which will

cover the time period from the American Revolution to the present day, is planned for fall of 2010. As a general rule, sports drinks become beneficial only after 90 minutes of high-intensity exercise. Up to that point, water is the perfect hydration choice. Some people tell me they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like water. The weather is warm and school is almost out, that means that summer is almost here and we always have many things we would like to fit into the next couple of months. If you are looking for a break from the cooking, try the new LongHorn Steak House that is soon to open near Harris Teeter. Their menu has a wide selection of meals to suit everyone in the family. The new shipping and auction business on Broadview Avenue, ShipOnSite and AuctionsOnSite, will be having their grand opening on June 19th from 10 am to 4 pm where you can get a preview of how they can help you with all your shipping and auction needs. This might come in handy during these graduation and wedding seasons or when you finish cleaning out the garage or basement and would like to get a few dollars for your hidden treasures. We also have a few things moving and changing in Warrenton this month. Warrenton Dermatology & Skin Therapy Center will be moving across Blackwell Road to a brand new space in Blackwell Park this month. What was C&S Florist, next to the bowling alley on Broadview Avenue, is now Warrenton Florist. Joey Wilson & Jim Stubblefield who have over 20 years at C&S Florist are the new owners and are planning to remodel the space to freshen things up a bit. One other possible change, that we will have to wait and see if it becomes reality, is that Oak View National Bank has applied to add a triple drive-through to their Warrenton branch on Broadview Avenue. That would be a great improvement and further their already great service.

If you have been watching some of the existing restaurant buildings, you may have noticed that the Wing Fanatic has a sign up that says they will be re-opening soon. But, I have not been able to confirm when exactly that will happen as of yet. Another restaurant building that has been undergoing some changes is the building on Broadview Avenue that once housed the Ocean Café. It would appear that along with the fresh paint job, there are plans to open a new Mexican restaurant named Rancho El Paso. We will see if that comes to fruition, as we have seen movement on that building before.
