tender love and care Trinity Lutheran Church This is the ninteenth in a series of articles about local churches and houses of worship. The purpose is to introduce you to the distinct features of each congregation, their philosophy and atmosphere. We believe that churches, temples, synagogues, etc are some of our best community centers. As you read about them each month we hope you will find one that interests you and your family. This month, we take a look at Trinity Lutheran Church. 6

Over the summer of 2011, a group of Lutherans in the Warrenton/Gainesville area began to explore the possibility of starting a new Christian community. Concerned with the direction of so many contemporary churches, and seeking to create a body of Christ that actively supports and cares for its fellow members in times of crisis, they founded a caring church dedicated to the Word of God in August of 2011. The resulting congregation, Trinity Lutheran Church www.trinitylutheranva.org soon became affiliated with the North American Lutheran Church (NALC), www. thenalc.org The NALC has embraced four core values which shape its spiritual life: it is Christ-Centered, MissionDriven, Traditionally-Grounded, and Congregationally-Focused. Trinity sought to affiliate with the NALC because of its efforts to reestablish traditional Lutheran doctrines and its

commitment to the Word of God as found in the Bible. Trinity is delighted to be a part of the NALC, which has a lean organization and encourages its churches to make its own choices about the charitable agencies it will support. Important issues of the NALC are decided by a convocation of members represented by the pastor and at least one member of each NALC church. This decisionmaking process keeps NALC policy consistent with the views of its congregations’ members in the mission field. Reaching out for pastoral support to the closest NALC congregation in the area, Reformation Lutheran Church in Culpeper, VA, Trinity received the support of its vicar, Dr. Dennis Di Mauro, who now serves as Trinity’s trinity continued on page 8

pastor. The new church held its first service on September 25th in the “upper room” of the Vint Hill Gymnasium. While its members enjoyed combining Sunday worship with their exercise routines (climbing those steps to the top of the gymnasium) they soon moved next door to the Vint Hill Theater to accommodate the growing congregation. As the sets of the Fauquier Community Theater changed from “Scrooge” to “Into the Woods” its members were able to enjoy them as a colorful backdrop for its worship services. The church even advertised its Christmas Eve service on the marquee of the theater. Trinity members love fellowship and they held their first fellowship luncheon on February 12th at the Northside 29 restaurant. It was at the Vint Hill Theater that Trinity graduated its inaugural First Communion class and held its first Easter service with a rolling stone, flowers, palms, and Passion Play liturgy. In the Spring of 2012, Trinity fully renovated existing retail space in the Henley Real Estate Building across James Madison Highway (Route 29) from the Pepsi Plant. When the call went out for the renovation, members contributed their skills so nearly all the labor for the renovation was provided by the congregation. After receiving zoning approval for the new worship space, the congregation held its first service at 5439 Old Alexandria Turnpike, Warrenton, VA 20187 in June. Trinity Lutheran Church is easy to find. Just look for the bright blue “Trinity Church” sign on the westbound side of Rte. 29 in New Baltimore. From 29, turn onto Old Alexandria Turnpike into the parking lot shared with “I’m Still Me” and “Henley Management Realty.” Trinity holds worship services every Sunday morning at 10AM with Sunday school at 11:15. Its new year of Sunday School for children will begin on Sunday, September 23rd and the church invites all parents in the area to enroll their children in Sunday School. Communion is available to all Christian believers and is shared at every service. In addition, the church holds a Bible Study for adults on Wednesday nights at 7PM. They also celebrated their first service for their new college and high school graduates on June 3rd. Trinity’s congregation has a passion for the Word of God. God’s way of communicating with us is through the Bible. This means that if we want to understand God’s plan for our lives, we must be immersed in His Word. While some churches teach on certain themes, Vicar Dennis preaches directly from the Bible every Sunday. Every time we read the Bible we see it anew and understand that it has a direct message for us that is as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago. This is why Bible study is at the center of Trinity’s mission. Trinity’s music for each Sunday is selected to support the chosen Bible verses for that service.

Trinity has a passion for serving the Warrenton and Gainesville areas. Still a relatively new congregation, it is already actively involved in making a difference in the community. Trinity recently completed its backpack campaign for needy children, and will be holding it first official social ministry meeting after worship on Sunday, September 16th. If you have a ministry for helping others on your heart, please join them for that meeting right after worship. Trinity is a growing community, and with growth comes opportunity for everyone to make a difference. The church is continually looking for new ways to share the gospel and help people in need. They would love to talk to you about implementing your ideas for serving God. Trinity also has a passion for serving the spiritual needs of its members. They believe that one reason people don’t go to church is because they don’t feel that anyone in church cares about them. In just the short time Vicar Dennis has been at Trinity he has heard too many stories of Christians who have felt abandoned in times of crisis by those same brothers and sisters in Christ who should have supported them in Christian love. Trinity is determined to be there for others, both its members and those in the community who need help. Vicar Dennis is an old-fashioned pastor who loves to make house calls. If you need to have your house blessed, need to be prayed over during an illness, or just need someone to talk to, please contact him. He is also deeply concerned about the children in Warrenton and Gainesville who have never been baptized. If you are reading this article today and would like your child to be baptized, please call Vicar Dennis today. These offers are unconditional: you need not be a member of Trinity Lutheran Church to benefit from a pastoral visit or baptism. Vicar Dennis can be reached at (703) 568-3346 or dennisdimauro@yahoo.com Trinity Lutheran Church will receive a blessing from Pastor David Wendel, the NALC’s Assistant to the Bishop for Ecumenism and Ministry, during services on September 9th. The community is invited to welcome Pastor Wendel to the area and to share in our “Open Church” celebration immediately following the service. Please check out our worship space and enjoy a picnic lunch with the Trinity congregation. Come and be an active part of this developing ministry. Each of us has different talents and everyone is needed to successfully serve God and our neighbors. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by a large congregation where you were anonymous, or where your voice went unheard, we could be the worship family you’ve been looking for. We are the congregation where everybody knows your name. Trinity Lutheran Church = TLC. We planned it that way!

character In the latter part of the 19th Century there was a section of the lower part of Manhattan in New York City called Little Italy. It housed most of the Italians who had arrived during the great immigration of that century. One of those who lived there at that time was my grandmother. From 1880 to 1900 southern Italian immigrants became the predominant Italian immigrant. This included residents of Naples, the birthplace of my grandmother.

In Italy the story of America, the land of dreams, traveled throughout the citizenry. Northern Italians were the dominant ruling group and many Southern Italians lived in poverty. Half of all late 19th century Italian immigrants were manual laborers. Italians rarely accepted charity and were willing to accept whatever dirty, dangerous jobs others did not want. At that time 90% of New York City’s public works employees were Italian. Most were unskilled. Some became waiters, fruit sellers, or tradesmen. character continued on page 16

” So it was that two young lovers, she from a wealthy family and he a skilled public servant, boarded ship in 1890 and sailed toward the Land of Riches and a life of poverty.”

Living conditions in Little Italy were abominable. Narrow tenements were packed together, five stories tall, poorly constructed, fire-prone, dark, and disease ridden, Clothes lines stretched across the street. The owners were interested only in their rent and residents lived hand to mouth. Renters would sometimes take in boarders in order to survive. Immigrants continued to pour in creating a swarming population. Living in abject poverty like most of their neighbors, my grandparents managed over the years to raise six sons, the eldest of whom was my father. My grandfather supported the growing family first by working in a peanut factory and later by becoming a street lamplighter before electricity entered the scene. Continuing to struggle, my grandparents were somehow able to move to Bensonhurst in Brooklyn, an Italian neighborhood where my grandmother could feel comfortable and where her sons could be raised in a less crowded environment. 16

” ...the fortitude of that strong-willed young girl, who listened to the

call of love, who took an action for which she was later disinherited for disobeying her father and for marrying below her class.” Sometimes my grandfather would go downstairs to the local park to sit a bit on a bench and enjoy the fresh air. A strongwilled woman, still deeply in love at the age of 80 and still capable of jealousy, my grandmother would watch him out the window and if she saw a pretty girl sit next to him, would immediately ask my Uncle Louis to go down and bring him up. In her eyes he was still the handsome young man and she wasn’t taking any chances. In the bedroom of my grandparents were two large portraits of them when they were younger. I have often wondered if, as she fell asleep, did she dream of her childhood? Did she dream of that beautiful young Neapolitan girl (my grandmother), a Marchessa, the daughter of the wealthy Superintendent of all the schools in Naples. Did she dream of sitting on the balcony of her spacious home next to her governess, not permitted to walk outside alone, and yet allowing herself to admire, and surreptitiously flirt, with that handsome young policeman walking his beat? Did she dream of that moment when the two of them captured the opportunity and quickly eloped to Marseilles to get married? So it was that two young lovers, she from a wealthy family and he a skilled public servant, boarded ship in 1890 and sailed toward the Land of Riches and a life of poverty. And so it is that I sit here, over a century later, thinking of the fortitude of that strong-willed young girl, who listened to the call of love, who took an action for which she was later disinherited for disobeying her father and for marrying below her class. I think of her inheritance to me - a set of genes containing the same fortitude and determination which has led me throughout my lifetime toward my desired goals. A gift, not of money or material assets, but an endowment of character.

I sit and I think and I give thanks.

Culture & Tradition

A Glimpse in the Past Commemorating 1862 in Warrenton and Fauquier County by Paula Johnson

See Warrenton’s past come alive as it happened on the streets of Old Town during the eighth annual Warrenton – Fauquier Heritage Day. The event on Saturday, September 22, 2012 is rain or shine and admission free beginning at 9:00 am until 3:00 pm in Warrenton. A second observance will be held at Buckland Farm from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm providing the participants a very unique opportunity to see and experience 18th & 19th Century America. It will aid in the understanding of how the Old Dominion developed. The historically sequenced parade will begin at 10:00 and be announced by Mr. John Cheatwood. Following the parade, a living history event will take place at the Warren Green Building where Mosby Player re-enactor Mr. Roy Kennedy portrays Federal General George B. McClellan reciting his Farewell Speech from the balcony. After President Lincoln relieved him of his command with orders from the War Department, McClellan relinquished his command of the Army of the Potomac on November 9, 1862 to General Irving Burnside. Immediately after the reenactment, the Colonel John S. Mosby statue will be rededicated after being recently reseated. Next will be a dancing demonstration by the Fredericksburg Colonial Dancers and prepare to join them as they invite the audience to participate. Following will be period music with Evergreen Shade in concert and join them as they play the Virginia Reel. A Speaker’s Program entitled The Eve of Fredericksburg – The Federal Army in and around Warrenton – fall 1862 will be presented at the 20

Warrenton Visitor’s Center. The Heritage Day Speaker’s Program was created by Prof. James Flanagan to commemorate those events that happened in our community and to turn the clock back providing a portal of time to experience 19th century America. The lectures will help the guests to recognize the unique heritage that is here and will demonstrate Fauquier’s place in history. Warrenton marked a change of hands sixty - seven times during the war years and twelve battlefields are contained within the county. The first lecture is presented by Mr. John Toler at 8:30 am and his topic is “The Union Occupation of Fauquier County”. At 11:30 am Mr. Frank O’Reilly of the National Park Service will present “The Planning and Preparation of the Battle of Fredericksburg” at 11:30 followed by “The Civil War in Fauquier County” presented by Mr. Donald Tharpe at 1:00 pm. Mr. Gar. Schulin will speak about “Robert E. Lee’s Strategy and Defensive Plan in the Battle of Fredericksburg” at 2:00 pm followed by Prof. James Flanagan at 3:00 pm as he presents “The Confederate Artillery Star at Hamilton’s Crossing”. Historic, heritage and civic informational tables will be set up from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm while period entertainment and dancing will be presented in Courthouse Square, at the Mosby House Grounds and the Warrenton Visitor’s Center where encampments will be set up for review. A Children’s Corner will be manned by teachers to present fun history to the children including period toys and clothing. Town tours will be conducted,

living historians will be on site, and displays will tell the story of the area’s past. Civic organization, Fauquier Community Thrift Store, will be set up on Culpeper St. with their information table and available to receive donations of canned food from the public. “Voices of Confederacy” is a new reenacting group that will debut this year to join many of our returning groups that compose a rich tapestry of living historians. The Piedmont Model Railroaders was founded in Warrenton in 1995 as an organization for railroad enthusiasts and will set up their railroad displays in the John Barton Payne Building. Their HO scale modules will be on display during the event on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. All of the Warrenton museums will be open. Liberty Heritage Museum located at 26 Main St. will contain an 1860’s artifact display including General Turner Ashby’s captured saber and death photograph, the jeweled presentation sword of Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, and the gold and silver sword of Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside. The 10 foot long painting of the “The First Maine Cavalry at Brandy Station, Va. June 9, 1863” is by Isaac Eaton and will be on display only for the day. The Warrenton Caboose will be open from 8:00 – 9:30 am for tours and the Old Jail Museum will have a new display, children’s activities, and tours. Rarely open to the public and exclusively for the event, Buckland Farm will illustrate Fauquier heritage continued on page 22

County’s history during the development of the Old Dominion. Located at 6342 Pleasant Colony Lane in Warrenton, the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the site of the “Battle of Buckland Mills” on October 19, 1863. As part of the Bristoe Campaign, the battle was fought between the Union Calvary forces led by Brig. Generals Judson Kilpatrick and George Armstrong Custer and they fell into an ambush. Confederate Generals J.E.B. Stuart and Fitzhugh Lee created a trap which resulted in a five mile chase to Gainesville and Haymarket. The Union defeat was subsequently called the “Battle of Buckland Races”. The Black Horse Cavalry will perform a field demonstration in remembrance of that battle. Nationally acclaimed civil war author and historian Mr. Robert Trout and Brandy Station President, author, and historian Mr. Joe McKinney will present lectures at Buckland Farm. Tours of the main house, which is one of the oldest and most significant houses in the area, will be given. The event is supported by the Town of Warrenton and Fauquier County. For more information, or to volunteer, please email pauladrdr@aol.com or call 540.341.7019. The event registration form can be downloaded from www.mosbysplayers.com. Please check back often for new additions to the event.

Burnside had declined twice before taking the command of the army. However, the orders were carried out by both parties and his orders were to pursue Richmond. He quickly devised a plan to outmaneuver the Confederate Army by crossing the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg on his way to threaten the Confederate Capital in Richmond. He learned the bridges had been destroyed and placed emphasis on speed to build the pontoon bridges for crossing the river and outmarch General Lee. That battle strategy, the Fredericksburg Campaign resulting in a victory for the Confederate Army on December 12, 1862, had been planned in Warrenton. Reflect on the 1860’s and relive the history in Warrenton with the unique opportunity to observe the jeweled presentation sword of Maj. Gen. George McClellan and the gold and silver sword of Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside. Share with your family this heritage and the role played by Warrenton and surrounding communities. Also featured is the captured saber and death photograph of CSA General Turner Ashby Jr. of the 7th VA Cavalry. Coming from a family of military service, Ashby was born at Rose Bank Plantation in Fauquier County, VA in 1828 and achieved prominence as General “Stonewall” Jackson’s cavalry commander, and his reconnaissance and screening were factors in Jackson’s legendary and successful Valley Campaign in the Shenandoah Valley in 1862. Ashby was appointed brigadier general on May 23, 1862 receiving his general’s star at the Taylor Hotel in Winchester just two weeks prior to being killed in the Battle of Good’s Farm on June 6, 1862. His horse was shot out from under him and he proceeded on foot when a shot to his heart killed him instantly. His last words had been, “Forward my brave men!”

1st Maine Cavalry at Brandy Station, Va. June 9, 1863. The artist is Isaac Eaton On November 9, 1862 McClellan was relieved of his command of the Army of the Potomac by order of President Lincoln, and the position was given to President Lincoln’s promising choice and adjutant, Ambrose Burnside. On November 10, Gen. McClellan then gave his farewell speech to his staff officers from the balcony of the Warren Green Building. This historic event will be reenacted to reflect the momentous event in Warrenton and portrayed by Mosby Player, Mr. Roy Kennedy. McClellan’s leadership skills during battle came into question by President Lincoln after a failed Peninsula Campaign in 1862, retreating from attacks by General Lee’s smaller army and an unfulfilled capture of the Confederate Capital in Richmond. Lincoln removed him from his command with General Order #182. McClellan was popular among the soldiers with his regard for their morale and well being. McClellan’s troops were directed through a communication with General Franz Sigel to line the point between Warrenton and Gainesville intentioned as a compliment as he passed.

He had been an accomplished horseman riding mostly white or black horses, and had been called by many the “Black Knight of the Confederacy”. He was described as having a distinctive appearance dressed in Confederate gray with gilt on his sleeves, a head of deep black hair, a large mouth concealing mustache and a long, heavy beard covering his chest. He wore a broad brimmed felt hat with a long, black feather streaming behind making him once observed, unforgettable. Seeing the sword and death mask as silent sentinels of the past will speak loudly to the viewer after observing General Ashby’s artifacts. The Liberty Heritage Museum is located at 26 Main Street in Warrenton, Virginia. The outstanding 1860’s artifact exhibit opening is a very special highlight for the eighth annual Warrenton – Fauquier Heritage Day on Saturday, 22 September. Founder and owner, Mr. Donald Tharpe is a Fauquier native, historian, and lecturer. He has collected, studied, organized and commemorated the Civil War since his teenage years. The museum is representative of his interest in Fauquier’s unique history and will provide an exceptional opportunity to view and remember the events of the piedmont and surrounding communities in the nineteenth century through viewing these exhibits. Embodying the theme of 1862 are the swords of Union Major Generals Ambrose Burnside and George B. McClellan.

Fauquier Health recently welcomed two new general surgeons to its staff of physicians. In addition to establishing themselves as highly trained and skilled experts in the general surgery field, both physicians believe communication and trust are the cornerstones of the doctor-patient relationship. “I think that a lot of questioning early on, and especially during the decision-making process, forms the foundation of patient care,” says Kip Dorsey, M.D. “Communication builds trust between the physician and the patient. Just being up front with each other, being on the same page together, and both knowing what’s going on throughout the whole process, is how you develop that bond.” Dr. Dorsey recently relocated to Warrenton after completing medical school and residency at the University of Oklahoma, where he gained valuable experience using the most up-to-date procedures and technology for a broad range of surgical specialties, including general, trauma, critical care, breast, and pediatric.

William Cloud, M.D., agrees. One of the things that impressed him the most during his initial visits to the area was the level of trust various community members expressed for the health system. “The first few times I visited Warrenton, I asked people in restaurants, gas stations and throughout the community how they felt about the hospital,” Dr. Cloud explains. “They all had positive opinions, which reinforced my desire to join the team. And I want patients to know they can trust us. If they come to visit Dr. Dorsey or myself, I want them to know they will receive excellent care.” Dr. Cloud recently joined Fauquier Health after practicing for 29 years in North Carolina, where he averaged 1,000 surgical cases per year. Some of his specialty areas include abdominal and GI surgery, endoscopy, complex foregut surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, multisystem trauma, vascular and hepatic surgery.

Upgrade Your Lunch Box Creating a pleasant presentation for the mundane plastic bag! This is a great way to get your kids and yourself interested in healthy foods. Here’s three different ways to pack lunch.

Cut Loose!

Use cookie cutters to make fruits and veggies stand out a cut above those sugary treats you know the lunch table is filled with. Lintzer cookie cutters make mini cuts for zucchini, squash, strawberries, cantaloupe, and any number of possibilities. Remember cutting things ‘kid size’ will make foods, like carrots much easier to chew. And when your veggies are cute...how can you resist gobbling them up?

Going Green! Makes a great combination for Queen Mum’s lunch box too.

Mini Tomatoes Sliced Mozzarella Cheese Broccoli Cup Turkey & Cheese Roll Ups Salad Greens with Floret Sliced Hard-Boiled Eggs Salad Dressing Cup Tip: Silicon cupcake cups hold salad dressing, dips, and fruit separate from the crunchy foods like chips and rice cakes. This keeps the rest of your lunch from getting squishy. You’ll never have to pack the salad dressing bottle again.

Lunch Meet & Cheese Roll Up The best part of this combo is there’s no bread needed.

Rice Cakes Ham or Turkey & Cheese Roll Ups Sliced Strawberries Diamond Shaped Zucchini & Squash Carrots Sliced to a Kid Friendly Size Tip: Pack the scraps too! They’re just as cute. Or better yet, save them for your own mid-morning snack!

Take Note Write sweet notes to your little ones, or better yet have them decorate plastic and brown lunch bags themselves to help keep them busy at dinner time. Try uplifting quotes, foreign language vocab, trivia, or just a silly message to brighten up the discussion at the lunch table.

Fun for All The idea is not for Queen Mum to take on all of this artistic work. Instead begin to encourage your children to pack their own lunches, setting out their clothes the night before, and checking the chore list board. it’s a great way to get kids making their own decisions early on. A parent’s job is to teach their children to make it on their own one day, right? A simple task gives kids responsibility and a sense of autonomy that theyw ill lack if they realize that parents would just do it all for them. Let your kids decide what they want to eat and even have a hand at making it. Princess Genevieve and her friends are available for private and public appearances in your area, including Princess, Fairy, Mermaid and Pirate Parties. Enchanting Northern Virginia and Southwestern Virginia. This fall the kingdom is hosting its Semi-Annual Dress Up Drive. In the spring we collect donated Easter clothes and in the fall, Halloween Costumes. You can help by spreading the work to other families you know who need to clean out the dress up bins at home. The National Championship

Country Music Contest by John T. Toler

In Part 1, the newly chartered Warrenton Jaycees put on their first National Championship Country Music contest in 1951 at the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds. With the help of country music promoter Connie B. Gay and others, the event was an immediate success and became a truly ‘national’ contest.

Part 2: Jaycees move the contest to Lake Whippoorwill After the 1957 National Championship Country Music Contest, it was clear that the event had outgrown the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds. Wallace Sanders Sr. owned 40 acres on Route 605 (Baldwin’s Ridge Road) that he was willing to lease to the Warrenton Jaycees for the contest weekend.

Everyone Wants One!

The property featured a small lake at the bottom of a hill, forming a natural amphitheater. Cornfields surrounding the property could be used for parking, and access was made available off Route 605 and U.S. 29. The site immediately proved popular with the performers and the fans, and with the addition of new celebrities including recording star George Hamilton, a record crowd attended the 1958 contest. Many bands and musicians returned Warrenton to defend their titles or win them back. Fiddlers Scotty Stoneman of the Blue Grass Champs and John Hall, a performer on the Don Owens country music television show, returned to break the tie handed out the prior year. Admission to the contest in its new venue was $1.10 for adults and $.50 for children under 12, with those under age six admitted free. Warrenton radio stations WKTF-AM and WKCW-AM broadcast parts of the contest, and for the first time, NBC Radio featured the contest on its weekend “Monitor” program. For the 1960 contest, popular country music DJ Robert “Red” Shipley (1937-2007) and WKCW-AM’s Tom “Cat” Reeder (19352012) began their careers as NCCMC masters of ceremonies. Unfortunately, the contest was rained-out for the second time before it could be completed. The Saturday night program had barely started when a steady shower sent everyone seeking shelter. A break in the weather mid-day on Sunday allowed the show to proceed, but by 7 p.m., the contest was called off when a thunderstorm brought lightning and a huge downpour. The Jaycee’s steering committee later met and declared the 1960 event a “no contest,” since so many performers didn’t get to play. Over $500 in prize money was carried over to the next year. The 1961 contest is remembered as the year Cal Newman beat perennial champion Scott Stoneman in the fiddler competition, which lasted until 4 a.m. In 1971, Delaplane filmmaker Tom Davenport visited the NCCMC, and produced a 15-minute film entitled, It Ain’t City Music, which captured the spirit of the contest, as well as its unique character. “Initially, I thought I might focus on the contest itself and generate an element of suspense in the outcome, but I decided not to,” wrote Mr. Davenport in Film News in 1973. “The winner in each category receives a cash prize, but as one man notes, ‘I don’t come to win, I come to play.’ And that sentiment is really the core of the festival. On all levels, it was often described as a kind of ‘family reunion.’ “They liked being filmed, and I liked filming them,” he concluded. “The warmth, humor and exuberance they reveal are what I wanted to share through the film.” It Ain’t City Music is perhaps the best way to relive the NCCMC experience in its heyday. It can be seen in streaming video at www.folkstreams.net/film,55. country music continued on page 36

Over the years, Jaycees working the contest also felt this connection, and often stayed after the end of the day to spend time enjoying the campers’ jam sessions and talking with them. “Seeing the campfires on the hill above the lake at night was really neat,” recalled former Jaycee Duane Thompson.

Bluegrass Festival Added In 1973, the Jaycees were contacted by Jim Clark, an entertainment promoter who was interested in sub-leasing the Lake Whippoorwill site for a three-day music festival. An agreement was reached, and on June 8, 9 and 10, the “Warrenton Bluegrass and Folk Festival” took place in 90-degree heat. But unlike the family-oriented NCCMC, the festival turned out to be a “mini-Woodstock.” In addition to the well-known country music acts like the Dillards and the Country Gentlemen were Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and others. The performances ran continuously.

The hill above the original Lake Whippoorwill formed a natural, if steep amphitheater, and the stage was built over the water at the edge of the lake. The venue served the Jaycees well from 1958 to 1980. Courtesy of The Fauquier Democrat.

“Clark brought in some high-priced talent, and the crowd overflowed the Lake Whippoorwill area,” recalled former Jaycee Bob Foley. “It became kind of a hippie event, with some people even showering under the waterfall of the Airlie dam.” A relentless stream of people – estimated at over 20,000 – crammed into the area. The tone of the event changed on Sunday, when “…the motorcycle heavies showed up,” according to a newspaper account. By the time the festival ended on Monday morning, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office had arrested about 30 people on charges ranging from indecent exposure to illegal drug use and assault. Afterward, the Jaycees had to clean up a huge, stinking mess that was a foot deep in places. “We used five or six dump trucks provided by R. L. Rider Co.,” added Mr. Foley. Learning from the mistakes and successes of the 1973 bluegrass show, the Jaycees launched their own “Bluegrass Day” on June 23, 1974, featuring Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley and Don Reno. The committee responsible for putting on the show included Jaycees Barney Wetzel, Charlie Rider, Curtis Lenz, Dick Young and Allen Crane. They made it clear that the Jaycee bluegrass festival had no connection with Mr. Clark, or what happened the year before; it was a simply a one-day event, with no competitions or prize money, and would not replace the MCCMC. Because they drew different audiences, the two-event plan worked – and made money – for a while. By 1979, the Jaycee’s bluegrass festival had grown to three days, and country music fans came to see the headline acts. But on Saturday, June 16, members of at least two feuding motorcycle gangs arrived on the scene. They were there to settle a score, and John J. Wood of Annandale, a member of the “Pagans” gang, was killed. Indicted earlier that week for plotting to blow up the clubhouse of the rival “Fates Assembly” gang in Maryland, Wood was confronted behind a souvenir stand by Timothy Connaughton of Manassas, a member of the “Phantoms” gang, who shot Wood three times.

The Country Gentlemen bluegrass band played at Lake Whippoorwill many times, and were promoted by the Lendel Agency of Warrenton. Standing, from left: Doyle Lawson and James Bailey. Sitting, from left: Charlie Waller and Bill Yates. Courtesy of Len Holsclaw. 36

Connaughton was arrested immediately, but the killing had a chilling effect, and convinced the Jaycees to discontinue the bluegrass event. The 29th Annual NCCMC was held at the lake six weeks later, but the murder was still on a lot of peoples’ minds. Some were worried about what might happen, and attendance suffered.

Last year at Whippoorwill… The NCCMC held Aug. 2-3, 1980 would be the last at Lake Whippoorwill, and in spite of everyone’s best efforts, once again the weather was a major factor. For their 30th annual contest, the Jaycees had two shows by Bill Monroe as the main attraction for Saturday, and a performance by honky-tonk pianist Jerry Lee Lewis on Sunday. In addition, the U.S. Navy band Country Current was scheduled to perform both days. As in the past, the Stringdusters studio band was on hand to provide back up. Over 200 acts were scheduled, and over $35,000 spent to bring the professional talent to the 1980 contest. According to Jaycee Ross D’urso, Saturday went off “without a hitch.” However, on Sunday, clouds began to form, and as Jerry Lee Lewis began to play on the baby grand piano on the stage over the lake, the heavens opened in a deluge of biblical proportions.

“It was raining so hard that I had I could hardly see,” recalled Mr. D’Urso. “The hill flooded, and coolers and lawn chairs washed down into the lake. As the water level rose to the edge of the stage, the electricity and stage lights went off, and the band stopped playing. “Jerry Lee Lewis continued to play, concluding with ‘Rockin’ My Life Away,’” recalled Mr. D’Urso. “With that, he slammed the piano closed and walked off. He refused to return after the rain stopped.” Because the contest shut down before the final competitions, alternative plans had to be made. At the suggestion of the Stringdusters, the finals were held the following weekend at the old Hunter’s Lodge (aka “Partners II”) in Fairfax, where they had connections. “But only a few people showed up,” said Mr. D’Urso. In the end, the Jaycees ended up $6,000 in the hole.

… and the final act at Manassas Having barely broken even or losing money on the last three events – and noting a lack of local support – the Jaycees decided to hold the 1981 NCCMC at a new venue: the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Manassas. They secured Carrier Air Conditioning as a sponsor, and worked out an arrangement with Prince William Fair Committee to co-host the contest with them for three years. country music continued on page 40

Understandably, the Jaycees felt committed to continue the contest, in spite of the past financial losses. “We love this show… it’s our heritage, our cornerstone,” said then-Jaycee President Tom Fleury. “We have to keep it alive.”

country music continued from page 38

As just co-hosts of the contest, the Jaycees’ role was somewhat diminished. They were required to provide the expertise and manpower, and guaranteed about $2,000 for the use of the name of the contest. Star attraction for the 1981 contest was Ernest Tubb, who had been the featured performer at the 1977 contest. There were no unexpected problems at the fairgrounds, but in the back of everyone’s mind was the feeling that something had been lost. The legacy of having the show at Lake Whippoorwill all those years – and all that went with it – were too hard to ignore. When it was all over, the Jaycees determined that the amount of work to hold the contest in Manassas was not worth the $2,000 that it generated for the organization, and so they opted-out of the last two years of the agreement. It was over. Looking back more than 30 years later, Ross D’Urso notes that there were other, more subtle issues in play. As a genre, country music had matured, and breaking into the business was no longer tied to winning recognition at events like the NCCMC. By then, the path to success relied mainly on recording studio contracts and courting big record labels. Tom Davenport recalled that when he made his film about the NCCMC, the demographics of the time – and the core country music fans – were changing. “At that time, lots of folks from West Virginia and Southwest Virginia migrated to Washington, D.C. for jobs,” he observed. “Now we notice that most newcomers are foreign born. This change also ended Big K (WKCW-AM) radio and the bluegrass programming on NPR’s (National Public Radio) main station.”

The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office was responsible for keeping order at the NCCMC, often an enjoyable duty. Above, Deputy Ron Stalls (right) watches the performance with Bill Johnson, of Warrenton and an unidentified friend at the 1970 contest. Courtesy of Tom Davenport.

Like the National Championship Country Music Contest, the original Lake Whippoorwill is gone, having been drained and filled-in. A new Lake Whippoorwill was built west of the old one for the residential community built there. Its use is restricted to residents and guests. The residents are aware of the unique heritage; the Lake Whippoorwill Homeowner’s Association Web page includes a link to Tom Davenport’s 1971 film.

Tom ‘Cat’ Reeder, a popular announcer at WKCW-AM Radio in Warrenton for many years, also served as master of ceremonies at the NCCMC. Popular country music announcer Robert ‘Red’ Shipley was one of the masters of ceremonies at the NCCMC for many years.

The old entrance on Route 605 is barely discernable, with a piece of electrical transmission equipment blocking the road visible through the brush; the gates to the U.S. 29 entrance are still there, but the road is gone. However, the Warrenton-Fauquier Jaycees continue, offering local men and women ages 21-40 the opportunity to serve their community. As in years past, their biggest project is the Christmas Toy Workshop, and help is always welcome. For information, call the Warrenton-Fauquier Jaycees Hotline at (540) 347-6650, or visit their Web site at www. warrentonfauquierjaycees.com.

Back to Basics

fables in labels Know what to look for when shopping for your family Most of us have the incredible goal of trying to feed our families healthy and amazing food, or using safe and good products for our bodies, but trying to wade through the mud of reading labels and getting to the heart of what we are eating and using seems like a time consuming and impossible task. I used to think that as well. Making simple changes in my lifestyle seemed to bring on a whole new slew of questions about ingredients and reading the labels on everything from crackers to applesauce, and that didn’t even include the lip balm just yet. However, the more I learned, the faster my eyes were able to go to exactly where I needed them to go to see whether or not the product I was looking as was good for my family. Starting off, I thought that I was covered if I bought items “made with whole grains.” After all, isn’t that what I was supposed to be buying? According to the front of the package and commercials everywhere, whole grains are all the rage, but turning over the package and actually reading the ingredient list is where I felt completely lost, frustrated and frankly, taken. When I would get home and actually have a minute to read the full list of ingredients, I was shocked at what I would find; high fructose corn syrup, MSG (in many forms), sodium nitrates, artificial flavors or colors, and more. Sure, it was tucked neatly in between those lovely and coveted whole grains and healthy ingredients, but it was there, and it was exactly what I was trying to avoid. What was the lesson here? I didn’t just have to know what I was after, I had to know what I wanted to fully avoid so that I knew how to spot those ingredients quickly. After all, who has time to shop let alone read while standing in the isle?

Quick shopping tips I have learned along the way: Don’t take for granted the front of the product when it says “Made With…” because that typically means that they have used just enough of the good stuff to get by, but that product is usually loaded with the ingredients you are trying to avoid. This is true with everything from food to your health and beauty products. Know the ingredients you are trying to avoid so that you can spot it quickly. For instance, when I am looking for a great all natural lotion, I see what they are offering on the front of the bottle, but I turn it over and start reading the ingredients, and even though I don’t understand all of those ingredients, I know that I want to avoid the most common dangerous chemicals like propylene glycol and dimethicone, so I look for them immediately. You don’t have to be a great scholar or have 3 degrees in your back pocket to be able to muddle through these seemingly complicated labels. Making wiser choices does take a bit of research on your part, yes, but it is not as difficult as we sometimes make it out to be. Sometimes it’s as easy as turning over a product. If you know what you want to avoid, you will begin spotting those ingredients right away. Wading through those isles can be difficult, but with a few quick tips and a little bit of research under your belt, you can make healthier, wiser choices for you and your family, leading your to a fantastic shopping experience.

Have you ever been bored of a room in your house and wanted to redesign it? What about when you were planning your wedding and needed fresh ideas? Or maybe you were having company over and wanted to make something absolutely mouthwatering? You spent what seemed like too much time searching Google, or cutting pictures out of every Southern Living Magazine in your home. Collecting ideas has always been a time consuming task that is now easier with a simple click of the repin and add to board buttons. With Pinterest, your own virtual pinboard, you can do everything listed above without it being a hassle. Using Pinterest is fun, easy, and doesn t require so much of the time that you never seem to have. You can save anything you like and organize it into categories or boards . Then, when you go back to look over your choices, it won t be so difficult to choose what theme you like best for your room, wedding, or what you want to serve for an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Pinterest is a virtual pinboard and picture based social media tool. It is a great way to find inspirational ideas, share cool stuff with friends, and easily keep pictures organized. Pinterest is also the third most popular social media networking site in the world, allowing you to share pins with friends, comment 44

on pins, and visit links. People love Pinterest because it’s fun, helpful, and easy to use. Plan a wedding. There are plenty of pins about hairstyles, dresses, “Save the Date” ideas, and decorations. I’ve tried a bunch of pretty hairstyles on myself, and I’m sure you could find one that you like too! Find your style. You can find endless pins of clothing styles, shoes, and nail ideas. I try tons of cool nail ideas, that aren’t that difficult to do! Redecorate your home. There are architectural ideas, furniture, DIY crafts, and theme ideas. I found a pin that was a seashell wreath, which would be great for a beach-themed bedroom. Learn new recipes. You will discover many delectable and creative recipes to choose from. Once, I found an iced coffee recipe that had coffee ice cubes instead of the usual, water-based kind. I’ve also come across a delicious recipe for sugar-cookie tacos! Don’t think that pins are limited to only those subjects! There is much more to find on Pinterest for whatever occasion! Some topics that might be of more interest to men include…

Pinterest Lingo

Board (noun): A themed set of pins Pin (noun): An image added to Pinterest Pinning (action): The act of placing an image on a board Re-pin (action): The act of reposting someone else’s image to one of your boards Pinner (noun): Someone who does the sharing (from http://socialoceanmedia.com):

Check Out Cars and Motorcycles. A man can find all sorts of pictures of Jeeps, BMWs, Mustangs, Hondas, Toyotas, Cameros, and Harley Davidsons. The selection of vehicles is endless and often updated. Search for Men’s Apparel You will find more than just women’s style on Pinterest. Men’s Apparel is also abundant. Ties, suits, colognes, watches, and boxers are only several things you will find in this area. How Businesses Are Using Pinterest. Pinterest is being used by businesses to gain more customers. ● Businesses can post pictures of the popular products they sell. For example, a restaurant can post a picture of a delicious menu item, and then link it to their website. ● A service business, like home landscaping, can pin pictures of landscaping jobs they’ve done, linking pins to their website. ● Businesses could also create a catalog of their items using boards. That way, customers can look at all the cool stuff in stock! ● A business can put a “Pin It” button onto their website so people can pin pictures from the website and share with friends. Business owners can get creative and figure out other ways to use Pinterest for a business advantage! After reading about all the helpful things available on Pinterest, I’m sure you’re just itching to know how to get started! 1. Start by going to the Pinterest website, www.pinterest.com 2. Send yourself an e-mail or ask a friend on Pinterest to invite you (If you send yourself an email, it will be several days before you get it.) Log on to your email account and find the email from Pinterest. 3. Accept the invite from your friend and sign up for Pinterest with a Facebook or Twitter account.

4. Follow the instructions given by Pinterest. Joining is only the beginning. There is more to learn once you are actually on Pinterest! Finding Stuff You Like. A good way to start off your Pinterest journey is by going to the “Everything” button at the top center of the page. Click it, and pins will show up with no specific topic. However, if you scroll over “Everything”, there will be a list of interests. If you see one that you like, click on it! Those pins will mostly be of that topic. If you wish to search for something in particular, go to the top left corner of the page, and type what you are looking for. Try not to be too specific, because often, more than one of the same picture will show up. The “Like” Button. If you see something you like, then simply “like” it! Scroll over the picture and the “like” button will show up, along with the “comment” and “re-pin” buttons. Later on, if you want to see your likes, go to the top right corner of the webpage and scroll over your name. Down a few rows will be the “Likes” button. Click on it, and you will see all of your likes. Pinning and Re-pinning. Re-pinning is very easy. Just scroll over the picture you wish to re-pin, click on

the “re-pin” button (next to “like” and “comment”), choose a board to put it in, write a comment, and click “Pin It”. To pin something, you must download the pin button onto the bookmark bar of your computer. When you are on a website and you see something you want to pin, just click the handy dandy “Pin It” button. (If you do not fully understand that, there is a tutorial video on the Pinterest website.) If you wish to pin a picture that is not on the web, upload it. Just go to the top right corner, and clicking “Add +”. Then click “Choose File” and it will pin it! If you have other questions on how to use Pinterest, go to the Pinterest website and go to the top right corner of the webpage. Scroll over “About”, and then click “Help”. There, you will find some good information on how to manage an account and other FAQs. Pinterest is fun because you can find cool ideas that aren’t widely used. It is easier and less time consuming because of pinning, liking, and categorizing into boards. Pinterest is helpful because of the hundreds of thousands of great pins you come across that help you plan out your life. It’s fun, easy, and useful. What could be better?

Molly’s Irish Pub a place to hang your coat & your mug. An old town fixture with a friendly feel, Molly’s Irish Pub offers regulars and newcomers-alike a leisurely spot to enjoy pleasant food, robust drinks (have a Guinness on tap or try Taylor’s bloody Mary) and good-humored company. Their outgoing staff delivers traditional Irish dishes right to your table with a smile on the side. Certainly a place you could consider your second home - come in, place your coat on the rack, request your private mug and make yourself comfortable. You’re at Molly’s. They have great appetizers to snack on while watching the game, listening to music, or hanging with friends. Grab an order of the Steamed Mussels, one whole pound of blue mussels served in their garlic, lemon, onion and white wine broth. Their craveable Hot Wings are large and meaty tossed in their sauce set up with celery and blue cheese or ranch. Easy to share are the Spinach and Artichoke Dip served with tortilla chips and their Nachos stacked with cheddar, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, sour cream, salsa and chili if you’d like. Their soups and salads are a great choice for a light and fresh meal. The Irish Potato Leek Soup is creamy and full of vegetables and September 2012

would easily pair with their House Salad. The Grilled Salmon Salad with Orange Basil Vinaigrette is a favorite on the menu. Bright greens are drizzled in their orange basil vinaigrette and topped with purple onion, shredded carrots and a grilled salmon fillet. They also offer a Steak Salad, Caesar Salad and a Grilled Chicken Peach Salad that are great for lunch or dinner. Regular diners are usually drawn to their traditional Irish dishes. Fresh cod dipped in their Guinness batter, lightly fried with a large serving of chips and a side of coleslaw makes their tasty Fish & Chips. The Irish Meatloaf is moist and flavorful, smothered in their savory Irish whiskey gravy and paired with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The Bangers and Mash are a must have. Pork sausages made locally and exclusively for Molly’s are served with mashed potatoes and an Irish whiskey mustard. Molly’s platters are sure to fill you up and leave you satisfied. The Rueben is always a great choice, with an option of corned beef or turkey, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing are layered on hearty rye bread. A pleasing vegetarian option is their Hummus Wrap, a spinach

tortilla wrap folded to hold hummus, lettuce, tomato, onion, and shredded carrots. Want a familiar favorite, try the Toasted Cheese, a grown-up style grilled cheese with melted cheddar on your choice of bread. Step it up and add bacon or tomato. Molly’s Irish Pub is located at 36 Main Street next to Hartman Jewelers. They are open seven days a week Monday through Sunday 11:30am to 2:00am. Beginning at 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, live bands rock and their music rolls down Main Street. Molly’s also has Quiz Night on Tuesdays and Open Mic on Wednesdays. Round up your friends and family to share a great meal and fun memories. Biz Buzz by Lawrence K. Emerson

September

Our awkward little group stumbled around the familiar local business in stunned silence. Clara Broyles knew it would be good for the seven, naïve kids in her “Economics and Sociology” class to get a good look at what happened inside the Virginia Oak Tannery. I’ll never forget that 1974 field trip, which took us only about a mile from Luray High School. We watched men walk atop skinny concrete walls and pull cowhides from vats of purple acid, which removed the fur. Nothing from a textbook could have made a similar impression.

306 LEE HIGHWAY -- WARRENTON -- 540 347 2533

Thank you, for helping us grow like crazy.

Mrs. Broyles, who also taught government, terrified most of us. She expected students to perform and, standing almost 6 feet tall, knew how to impose her will on even the most reluctant scholar. We “studied” in a tired, poorly-lighted redbrick school, built in the 1930s — the same place in which my father received his entire formal education, before and after his World War II service. In fact, I had a couple of the same teachers. Despite Page County’s lack of wealth and a dropout rate that approached 50 percent — we started eighth grade with almost 150 classmates and graduated with 83 — I found myself better prepared for freshman English than most of my college friends. Great teachers made the difference. Lena Martha Bohannon and Ada Jean Clark cheerfully ground grammar into my head. Rick Johnson and Pam Nesselrodt wisely pushed me to write more effectively. So, as a new school term begins, let us pause to thank those who challenge and inspire students. Although childless, I routinely encounter great teachers on visits to local schools and in my daily work. They have passion for their profession that transcends bureaucracy, budgets and the chattering class. Often, they must cherish small victories and deal with students’ complex family situations. I still don’t understand how someone can stand and try to motivate a couple dozen teenagers several times a day, five days a week, for nine months . . . and keep coming back. When I occasionally, spend part of a day talking with classes, it saps all my energy — for days. Even as you read this, a teacher makes a difference for a child or for a group of students somewhere in Fauquier.

I’ve written this before. But, I still believe that every adult citizen should spend at least one day per year in a local school. We all would learn something. Some news items: • Fauquier County Business Development Coordinator Beverly Pullen and Tourism Coordinator Catherine Payne will travel to China this month “in an effort to recruit and foster business development opportunities.” They will visit the city of Liyang, which sent a delegation here in May. • The Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for its top annual awards: Business Person of the Year and Business of the Year (in large, small and non-profit categories). The chamber will present the awards at its annual banquet Friday, Nov. 9. “Lou” Emerson edits FauquierNow.com. You may send business news to him at: LKE@FauquierNow.com or call him at 540-270-1845.
