Editor’s Note Dog-Gone Warrenton Walking low to the ground, it takes folks some time before they pay attention to me. And I don’t speak English but am extremely loyal and willing to please. I’m a dog and I have something to say. My name is Frank Sinatra and I live with the publishers of this magazine and sometimes hang out at the office with them and the other two-legged creatures in the building. I sat in on many publication meetings and listened to them brain-storm concepts for this magazine. I’d hear them say phrases like “What’s missing?” “What do people love in Warrenton?” And there I was sitting in front of them, smiling, wagging my stump of a pigtail, tilting my head, and dancing in circles. During one of these meetings the big one declared that ‘he’ figured it out. “Warrentonians love their dogs and we’ll devote an entire issue to them.” Fauquier County may be horse country (and now wine country) but Warrenton is a dog-friendly place. My canine pals have jobs, they greet customers at businesses, keep their humanoids calm and force them to exercise, help introduce people and start conversations, lead parades and have our own economic impact (you people spoil us – deservedly so). Previous editor Krysta Norman got the ball rolling with detailed planning. New editor Kristin Heydt enthusiastically began writing and working with our guest editor, Charlotte Wagner, a certified dog trainer (who is really training whom here?) and behavior therapist (people behave so much better when I am around). I like Charlotte. She has good treats and lots of dogs that I hope to meet soon. Even if you don’t have a dog in your home, I think you’ll like meeting my friends and what they do.
Enjoy! Frank warrentonlifestyle.com facebook.com/warrentonlifestyle 5

Doggy Dates In and Around Warrenton
Andre the Giant loves a stroll along the Greenway.
Man’s Best Friend is a staple to many of our lives. We treat them like family, and with that take them on our trips to the store, family vacations, and the park for our picnics. Why not try some place new in the area? These are some of my dog’s favorite places to take me, and hopefully your dog will enjoy taking you to as well. Bring a bowl and a bottle of water in the car and don’t forget the leash and poop bags!
Parks & Paths
Warrenton boasts many wonderful parks in and around its borders. Rady Park, where a certain employee’s boxer enjoys his mornings, features a great walking path for humans and animals. Academy Hill Park, located off Walker Drive, is a great place to let your dog enjoy some fresh air. The Warrenton Town Council is considering it as a possible location for a local dog park, and we’re looking forward to the fun. Speaking of dog parks, Vint Hill offers a great dog park (find them on Facebook) for you to bring your companion. It’s 1.25 acres are located on the corner of Aiken Drive and Kennedy Road. The Warrenton Branch Greenway is a great and convenient place to take your dog for a walk and enjoy the happenings and shops of Main Street after. If you are looking to be a little more adventurous with your dog, Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane and Whitney State Forest just south of Warrenton offer miles of woods for you and your companion to explore.
A proposed dog park may soon be coming to town in the area of the Academy Hill Park. 6

Outdoor seating at local restaurants
Some restaurants in Warrenton offer outdoor seating with pet-friendly options including Mojitos & Tapas, RedZone, Faang, Hidden Julles Café, Foster’s Grille, Great Harvest, Black Bear Bistro and more.* After a great lunch or dinner, there’s no reason why your dog cannot enjoy a vanilla PupCup (with a milkbone topping) from Carousel while you enjoy your delicious ice cream with friends and family. The large outdoor seating area is perfect for you. *Note that a double-check of the dog policy ahead of your visit to a particular business is always appreciated. Also, make sure that your pup is comfortable around other dogs as yours might not be the only one there.

Sometimes the canine clientele at Carousel Frozen Treats are nice and relaxed like our furry friends above (Molly pictured below left) and sometimes they are as excited about their ice cream trips than their human friends (like Frank at right below).

Before leaving Fido at home when you go to enjoy your favorite vino, check with the winery (or brewery) first, many of them enjoy and encourage you to bring your best friend along.
Wineries (and Beer!)
One of the wonderful things about Warrenton is the abundance of great wineries located near us. Many of these wineries are pet friendly locales like Barrel Oak Winery, Granite Heights Winery, Pearmund Cellars and Marterella Winery, as well as Old Bust Head Brewery. Check with your favorite winery ahead of time to see if your pooch can join you.
Warrenton Kennel Club classes
If you’re looking for opportunities to spend quality time with your puppy or dog, consider taking a class with them. Warrenton Kennel Club offers a variety of classes from obedience to show to Puppy Kindergarten. Check their website for times and dates.
D-I-Y days
Got a project you’re working on at home and don’t want to spend your time away from your buddy? Bring him with you. Home Depot and Rankin’s True Value Hardware are both pet friendly locations. We can’t guarantee your dog will help you with the project and we know you’ll get stopped by other dog lovers in the area so plan a little extra time. These aren’t the only places in Warrenton that are pet friendly either. You can always take your dog with you to PetCo (I’m sure they’ll show you what they want there) or The CFC Farm and Home Center. You are also welcome to bring them here to Piedmont Press & Graphics and the Warrenton Lifestyle. We love to say “hello” to new 4-legged friends.
There are almost always pooches pounding the pavement on Main Street. With ample side walk space and some businesses even supplying water bowls for our furry friends, it makes a great place for a friendly stroll. Top right is a first encounter between 3 month old Jolene and 4 year old Jack on Main Street. Bottom right is RG with his 2 legged owner, Eric. 10

GROOMING Aging Dogs by Leslie Shriner
Grooming is something we should be doing with and for dogs, not something we do to them. This is especially true for our oldest companions. As our dogs age, their need for grooming increases. Sensitive skin from allergies or chronic irritation, overgrowth of undercoat, matting, and brittle coat all make grooming more necessary for old dogs. However, physical infirmity can also make the process harder on them. Grooming can be so taxing on an old dog that the owner believes that it should be done as little as possible. Unfortunately, 12
this means that when the dog is finally groomed, it may be just as long, difficult and grueling as the owner feared. The better choice is regular grooming. Most grooming sessions consist of at least basic care: sanitary trimming of face, feet and privates, cutting and smoothing toenails, a thorough cleaning bath and deshedding or dematting, if either is needed. Longer haired dogs need additional coat trimming done, that’s the styling or haircut. The groomer will use a range of tools from water nozzles and
air blowers to brushes and combs and clippers and scissors. Dogs requiring specialty coat care such as moisturizing, deshedding, antiseptic or antifungal treatment, or ea and tick treatment get special shampoos, conditioners or rinses during the bath. Typically, they will require some cage time with a blower or dryer before they can be finished. Many steps along the way pose challenges to older dogs. Many of them have trouble standing still for long grooming sessions due to aches and pains from chronic injuries and Warrenton Lifestyle

arthritis. For dogs with physical disabilities, keeping grooming sessions short keeps them the most comfortable. Some dogs manifest behavioral issues that were not present when they were younger. They can become impatient with or uncomprehending of the process, particularly with brushing, toenail trimming and restraint, and panic or try to bite. These dogs need grooming sessions to be simple, predictable affairs with a minimum of intensive brushing and touching. Having the dog groomed on a repeating schedule, instead of waiting until there’s a noticeable problem, is the best way to keep the sessions both simple and short. Late summer and early fall are a good time to begin a maintenance grooming schedule. Because of late vacations and back-to-school, groomers are usually at their least busy and have the most time to spend on older dogs. Also, when dogs are groomed in the fall, they are staged for their holiday grooming to be as easy as possible. The holidays are the worst time for an older dog who has not been maintained to be groomed but it frequently happens. The grooming salon is busy and noisy and dogs usually have to stay longer because of all the demands for service. By April the grooming salon is getting busy again with spring shave-downs so February through March are also good for older dogs. Finally, early summer is a great time for older dogs to be thoroughly deshedded or have haircuts to keep them cool. It requires a lot of experience to keep an older dog safe on the grooming table in light of their frailty and sensitivity. Take the time to find a groomer or salon that actively welcomes old dogs and that has experienced staff members present while your dog will be there. These are the professionals who have had hundreds, even thousands of interactions with older dogs, especially with their own, and have been trained to see and be sensitive to many different kinds of age-related complications. When you can find it, a groomer’s previous veterinary hospital experience provides valuable insight into recognizing a wide range of both common and uncommon maladies. Veterinary care workers usually cultivate kind and effective methods of restraint when working with ill, injured and uncooperative dogs, and this translates well into grooming. Veterinarians and groomers who have worked with them often communicate the nuances of elder-care better because of their common professional experiences. Our older companions require more regular care and maintenance than their younger counterparts. Age-related disabilities set in, potentially making grooming an ordeal for everyone, dog, owner and groomer. The best way to avoid grooming taking a physical and emotional toll on your geriatric dog is to make it a regular, predictable part of your dog’s life. The right groomer for your older dog will be eager to help you make this ideal a reality. 14

KIDS & CANINES Because there’s nothing cuter than two and four legged children. Children and dogs can make great companions for one another, resulting in impressions that can last a lifetime. Many of us remember tales of that one dog that was like a brother or sister to the family. Teaching manners, implementing rules, and managing interactions will help foster a respectful and healthy relationship between kids and canines.
Doggone Safe
Approaching A Strange Dog
Unfortunately most bite incidences occur amongst children and dogs due to a lack of socialization, poor management, or inappropriate interactions. For this reason it is important to instill good etiquette in both child and canine alike. From an early age children can be taught to ask dog owners whether or not their dog is accepting of interaction and petting. Some dogs are more tolerant or accepting of strangers and children than others. Once the human gives the a-ok, it is also important to ask the dog, whether an approach is welcome. An outstretched hand to a friendly dog for sniffing, followed by slow and steady petting low on the chest is a great start. Once that is well perceived and the dog continues to initiate contact, feel free to further the relationship by petting the side or back. Giving a treat is a great way for a child to interact with a dog, and helps build a positive association for the dog as well. Dogs too need to learn to be calm, controlled, and accepting of children. Socialization from puppy to adulthood is an ideal way to introduce social skills and will help with the imprinting of positive associations to children. 16

Give A Dog Some Space Identifying and understanding basic canine body language will help decipher which dog is safe to approach, and which one may not be as welcoming towards a greeting. Unlike humans, dogs are rarely vocal about their interactions and solely rely on both subtle and obvious posturing to portray their emotional state. Common signs of dogs showing discomfort or avoidance to interaction include: lip licking, head turning, enlarged eyes with whites showing, ears back, tail tucked, leaning away, appearance of facial ridges, panting, and even recurring yawning. More obvious signs may include the dog hiding behind the owner and showing full avoidance or removal from area.
Living with Kids and Dogs A common challenge for many dog owners is adjusting to life with a newborn, adapting to the motor skills of a toddler, and harnessing high energy interactions with older kids. Dogs have a great curiosity towards babies, but require some time to adjust to the new household, boundaries, and routine. The greatest demands on the household pet are often during the crawling, standing, grabbing, and walking stages of toddlers, and the rambunctious chase and screaming soon followed throughout childhood. In order to set both kids and canines up for success remember a few basic rules:
• Teach your kids how to respect the dog’s personal space and to not chase, grab, or tease the dog. Some dogs may be tolerant of hugging and restraint, however most dogs do not appreciate being cornered, confined, or confronted face-to-face. Conflict is the most likely time when the dog’s fight or flight instinct may kick in. • Teach older kids how to take part in caring for the dog including: feeding, grooming, and training • Do not encourage chase play as this may encourage unwanted behaviors association with the predatory drive of some breeds • Use basic obedience and control cues such as place, wait, stay, back, and settle to allow the dog to enjoy down time with the family in a good manner
Games For Kids and Dogs A variety of games and interactions allow kids and dogs to interact in a friendly and harmonious manner. Here are some past time suggestions: •
Trick training is fun, interactive, and highly rewarding for both parties. Common favorites include: shake, speak, spin, and roll over!
• Teach and practice good impulse control with your dog
•
• Try to establish a daily routine, the more your dog can predict daily happenings, the better it will adjust
Fetch is a great way to include obedience commands and impulse control in play
•
Tug-of-War is good game for dogs that are able to drop a toy on command and do not become overly excited during play. This may or may not be an appropriate interaction for different breeds and kids.
•
Hide and Seek is awesome for improving recalls in dogs and highly entertaining
•
Find it! Hiding treats around the house or yard for a canine scavenger hunt
•
Red Light / Green Light: a
• Teach and instill boundary training well before the arrival of a newborn • Introduce your dog to cribs, strollers, gates, high chairs, baby toys etc. well before the due date • Always allow your dog access to a “down time” space where it has the option to retreat to when things get too much 18
version of the favorite kids game incorporating stays and recalls for the dog to participate
• Utilize tools such as gates, crates, tethers, and the like to manage your household where applicable •
Simon Says: Adults can choose obedience cues and kids can help their dogs complete behaviors Simon has requested
•
Agility equipment is an easy DIY job from cutting some PVC piping as weave poles to putting a broom handle between to lawn chairs. Hoola hoops and children play tunnels further help with course assembly
•
Rally Obedience, Dog Dancing, and Conformation Showing events routinely have junior handlers involved for more adventurous kids
With some education, dedication, and even a little bit of fun, negative and agressive dog interactions can become a thing of the past. For more ideas and resources for building happy, safe and healthy relationships between dogs and kids visit doggonesafe.com.

ver at least the last two decades, and certainly since the 2000 release of the Christopher Guest film “Best in Show”, American popular culture has been intrigued and entranced by the unique culture of the nation’s most well-known conformation trial:The American Kennel Club Wesminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden. While the movie is a silly fictional satire of the international-level dog show community, the one truth that the movie uncovers is that passion and personality run strong through this group of dedicated dog enthusiasts. In recent years, members of the area dog community have seen great success in bringing their champion dogs to the national level of competition. While there may be superficial similarities to a beauty contest style format, the system of rules and regulations for these conformation trials are of a much harder science.

at International Level
Local Champions: Dogs of Warrenton have much to be proud of in our “home team”. Warrenton has sent many canine emissaries to win great honors at national competition. The sport of dog showing has a long tradition in this area, with many local events taking place in the local area through kennel clubs and breed organizations that are fun and interesting spectacle for the family. Our local trophy shelf is quite full of national and international awards. In this article, we’re highlighting three kennels with recently recognized “top dogs.”
What is Conformation? Dogs competing in conformation shows are judged against an ideal standard, rather than against each other. Judges in these competition are well-versed in what make the “ideal” specimen of a particular breed. The way the coat lays, the teeth align, the angles of eyes and ears, and the movement of the dog are among many factors used to judge a dog against the standard for that breed, aka the breed standard. The American Kennel Club is the primary governing body that regulates breed characteristics by fielding input from breed-specific organizations. Certain aspects of standards are subject to change and update. Nevertheless, conformation judges are required to stay up to date on the current expectations from a breed. Some judges specialize in one breed or group, while others have ambitiously qualified to be a judge of all categories, a process that involves extremely involved time and study. Warrenton Lifestyle

Pat White’s Champion Halcyon’s Utopia, aka “Pia”
Frodo Catlett’s Halcyon Standard Schnauzers, owned by Pat White, is home to some of the best examples of the Standard Schnauzer breed in the country. Pat explains her passion for the breed,” I was young and in New York City, and I wanted a dog that was well suited to a smaller living environment, that was a sweet companion, but could also be tough if need be. I looked around for the perfect dog for a while, and then, while visiting a friend, I met a dog I absolutely adored. They put me in touch with his breeder, and I was hooked.” From there, Pat explored the possibilities of breeding her dog who came from a champion line. Through long process and careful selection of bloodlines, Pat founded Halcyon Kennels in 1989, and has since been recognized as a Breeder of Merit by the American Kennel Club. As Pat says, Halcyon Standard Schnauzers are “people puppies,” lavished with love, given training with positive reinforcement, and and raised in a home environment. Her “dogs are bred for excellent health, outstanding temperaments, and structural soundness”-- all characteristics evaluated in the breed standard. Further proof of this success: Pat White’s Halcyon Standard Schnauzers have achieved high honors at national and international major dog shows.
was entered into Westminster as just a pup! He achieved the top honors at three prior qualifying shows, and was given the nod to attend the world famous show this past February. His adventures are detailed in the “News” tab at GeorjeansPetGrooming.com. Leslie says,”I am really looking forward to a successful journey with this sweet dog. He’s only 16 months old, but so far he has really made an impression.” Leslie and Pat both emphasize that the key characteristic they look for in a Standard Schnauzer is their gregarious and inquisitive nature. Combine that with great health and a sturdy, healthy and symmetrical body type, and you have the kind of champion that Frodo has become. “It really is about the dog. It’s not about me. So when we go to competitions, I want the dog to know that they are special to me. That gives them confidence in the ring.”

“Boom-Boom” puts on the charm at last Fall’s Montgomery Terrier Show.

Boom-Boom
Boom-Boom In the case of Argyle’s Marimba Queen “Boom-Boom” DiNunzio, big personality comes in a small, very furry, package. Owner of Hound N’ Hair grooming salon, Bob DiNunzio and his partner Robert Desando began Argyle Norfolk terriers after the purchase of their champion Sire dog, Luigi, aka Chantilly’s Cawdor of Argyle. Luigi can often be found directing operations at the 5th street business with a peppery bark and frequent wiggles of his tail when clients pass muster. In the reception area, a colorful oil painting of Etta, Argyle’s champion bitch hangs in a place of prominence. As a puppy, CH Etta James at Argyle, surprised the crowd and wowed the judges at several major competitions.
Piedmont Advertising Representative, and ultimate bird-dog enthusiast, Patti Engle has much to be proud of with her canine companion, Striker. 10 years-young BISS Grand Champion Pengals TRF-Striking Image JH, aka “Striker, has had a long career of impressing judges in conformation show judging. Receiving high marks at national specialties was old hat for this German Shorthair Pointer at just 2 years of age. In addition to participating in physical conformation evaluations, dogs who serve a vocational purpose, like a pointer, can also go through qualifications of their ability to perform their intended purpose. The suffix JH on Striker’s pedigree serves to identify him as a “Junior Hunter.” Think of it as the same way a ribbon or medal on a military officer’s uniform is used to denote rank or accomplishment. The “hunter” denotations describe the level of field or course trials for hunting dogs. Similarly, working dogs like Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Grand Pyrenees (among others) can qualify their abilities with drafting evaluations, etc. After his Championship, Striker received further honors at 8 years old by becoming a Grand Champion: a relatively new system of recognition instituted by the AKC to further identify dogs who have already accomplished a Champion status. “He hasn’t let it go to his head, though,” says Patti. “In general, he is still a lovable couch potato [he has his own] and frisbee freak.”
Striker
This growing championship record has paved the way for the kennel’s latest starlet, Boom Boom, to win major recognition at the nation’s most prestigious shows. Boom Boom took Select at February’s Westminster Kennel Club show, placing her in good stead for this fall’s upcoming busy show schedule. Bob DiNunzio explains, “It’s good to be in this position going into the season. She caught the judge’s eye at a number of shows, and she’s just getting started.” 28

Remembering Marilyn... She had been cutting my hair for 18 years, and it is hard to drive downtown without thinking of Marilyn. Marilyn Parker passed away at her home in the early morning hours on June 28, leaving a hole in the hearts of many. Parker and Company was Marilyn’s cozy, quaint beauty shop in the John Marshall Building. She would always greet customers with a big, “Hi, how are you?” If you went in for a “quick cut,” you may have ended up being there for two hours...at least. PATROL:
INTELLIGENT, INTERDEPENDENT, INDISPENSABLE
Most household dogs know at least one trick. Be it to shake hands, roll over, dance, or even perform more complicated jobs like herding geese off of the lawn or fetching a specific toy, few dogs have the resumé that compares to the extensive skills of the K-9s of the Fauquier County’s Sheriff’s Department. The force boasts seven Patrol K-9s, whose skills include the ability to use their heightened sense of smell and physical agility to assist sheriff’s deputies in tasks that would be impossible to accomplish by human means alone.
Because of the unique assignments involving K-9 Patrol handlers, deputies strive for the coveted position. Since the program’s inception in 2006, the K-9 unit has amassed a roster that includes five dual-purpose dogs and two single-purpose dogs. The dualpurpose dogs have certified through special training to assist police officers on patrol in addition to detecting and alerting to narcotics or weapons in a search area. The single purpose dogs specialize in tracking and searching. 30

Police dogs are often called as “expert witnesses” in courtroom trials, demonstrating their superior senses for the jury as part of the prosecution’s evidence. The types of duties required of the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit fall into the following categories:
PATROL This makes up the majority duty calls for the K-9 unit. Police K-9’s accompany their officer handlers on shift duty; responding to calls of trouble and safeguarding the safety of our community. The dogs are trained to respond to signs of aggression and trouble and to provide physical support to their officer if need be.
ARTICLE SEARCH & AREA SEARCH In addition to patrolling with officers and protecting their safety, the Sheriff’s Department K-9s are often called to examine suspicious vehicles at traffic stops. Recent stops like these in Fauquier County have halted the illegal distribution of dangerous street drugs and weapons in and around our area. The Fauquier County School division depends on regular patrols of school grounds, buildings and parking lots to protect our students’ safety and drug-free school zone policy. Should a person go missing, sheriff’s K-9s are ready to sniff out their scent and hopefully locate the lost individual safe and sound. With broad expanses of rural and remote areas in our county and surrounding areas, the police dogs have been able to locate and assist with rescues of wayward hikers, elderly people, and children. The canines and deputies share work shifts, and therefore, share schedules of rest, exercise and meals in order to be in top condition and “on” when called to serve; just like their human counterparts. K-9s live at home with their handlers and many have special air conditioned and heated kennels in which to rest and enjoy “just being a dog” on their off time. When they are not resting, deputies further the bond and working relationship with these amazing creatures by engaging in enrichment activities that reinforce the dogs’ training. ZAR Handler: Corporal Chad Brubaker Breed: Belgian Malinois Specialty: Patrol/Narcotics Typical day in the life: “We try to go for a 3 mile run in the morning then home to relax & cool down. We take a short walk to get the mail, then have some lunch. Zar then rests for the afternoon in preparation for the midnight shift.” About Zar: He is a kind, loving animal, who is very loyal to his handler and his family. Officer’s favorite downtime activity: Camping K-9’s favorite downtime activity: Playing ball K-9’s favorite reward: Ball on a string

Deputy Joy Weaver of her K-9 Dazee,”She’s my best friend. I know I can rely on her, and that she will be there for me to help me get the work done.” Kara Thorpe, wife to MDS John Thorpe, “I rest so much easier knowing that [K-9] Slate is with John on patrol. He knows that it is his job to protect John.” To say that the dogs lend superhuman ability to the operations of the Sheriff’s Department would not be an understatement. Belgian Malinois, like Fauquier County Sheriff’s K-9s “Zar”, “Hank” and “Ex” (Mal./Shepherd mixes), are known in lawenforcement and military applications as being extremely focussed on their assigned tasks with an athletic build, and a sense of smell hundreds of times more sensitive than a human’s. In fact, it was a Belgian Malinois that accompanied Seal Team 6 on their raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound. Patrol dogs have an unbelievable ability to detect a human hiding in a building. As General David H. Petraeus argued for the incomparable value of patrol dogs in international military effort: “The capability they bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine.”
ACE Handler: Master Deputy James Arrington Breed: German Shepherd/ Belgian Malinois Specialty: Patrol/Narcotics About Ace: Ace is a hard worker but also loves his time at home where his favorite pastimes include playing ball in his yard and sleeping inside on his bed. Officer’s favorite downtime activity: Spending time with friends and family K-9’s favorite downtime activity: Playing ball K-9’s favorite reward: Ball

HI TECH
Pets
A
s a hard-core computer geek, for me the first connection between computers and pets that comes to mind is the Commodore PET. In 1977, this became the first personal computer to be successfully mass marketed. When the consumer opened the box, he found, among other things, a 9” integrated blue and white monitor, a computer with a (for that time) powerful 1 MhzMOS 6502 processor, 4K of memory, a cassette tape (!) drive, and an operating system that was burned onto a ROM and loaded on boot. Groovy. But let’s move on to real pets and computers. Did you know that your computer is a dust magnet? You wouldn’t believe some of the dirty computers I’ve seen. And once we had one marked as “his” by a cat. It wasn’t good for the computer, and stank. Pet owners should be aware that cat and dog hair can clog computer fans, which causes overheating, strange fan noises, and ultimately a computer shut down to keep the CPU from burning. If you keep pets, a desktop should be dusted out at least once a year, especially if it is placed near the floor. Laptops are much harder to clean out; leave them to the pros.
Speaking of laptops, the worst place to work with one is on your lap. It overheats faster, collects more dust and hair, and can give you “laptop thigh.” Soft surfaces such as pillows, carpets, or your bed are also bad, especially if your pets like to lounge there, too. The best thing you can do for the longevity of your laptop is to invest in a cooling pad or lap desk. 38
Computers
&PETS by Dok Klaus
The next problem is cables. Dogs like to chew on cables, especially puppies. Rabbits and mice like them, too. Needless to say, this is very dangerous (think voltage and shocks). You should always keep your cables away from pets and babies. But there are many positive connections between pets and computers. Lately, pets have entered the world of apps. There are several cool apps for dog owners. Tagg is a GPS that fits on your dog’s collar. It is designed to give the owner peace of mind by tracking the pet, as well as keeping tabs on its exercise. For people in search of a dog walking buddy, there’s DoggyDatez, which helps you locate owners of compatible breeds in your “territory.” I expect this only works as intended if a fairly large group of pet owners in your neighborhood buy in to the app. And Foursquare can help you organize dog parks, vets, pet stores, etc. in your area. Finally, for those who for whatever reason can’t have a pet, there are ways to enjoy them through computers. Many users are familiar with aquarium screensavers. But they are rather limited. Sims 3 Pets has opened the Sims world to virtual pets of all kinds. Some Sims players really get into breeding their virtual pets and selling ready-made downloads of exotic types. In one expansion, you can experience your virtual creation from the pet’s point of view. And recently, I stumbled over a YouTube video reviewing “Zoomer The Interactive Robotic
Klaus Fuechsel, a somewhat reluctant dog walker, is better known as the “Dok” of Dok Klaus Computer Care, voted the Best of Warrenton for Computer Service and Repair. Pet” (made by Spin Master). Zoomer beats electronic stuffed animals by performing lots of typical doggy tricks. It even reacts to voice commands and responds with a wide variety of puppy noises! Robotic animals are trending. The Japanese have developed a furry robotic cat (Sega Toys), BBC has a lifelike penguin spycam, and San Diego University developed a robosquirrel as a biology teaching tool. A robotic animal might not be able to satisfy your needs for a cuddly friend to love and pet, but at least it won’t pee on your computer. Warrenton Lifestyle

Ready to bring a dog
into your family? Key Issues For Successful Dog Ownership Within the last year an estimated 58 billion dollars was spent nationwide on food, veterinary care, supplies, and general upkeep of family pets. With roughly 56 million households sharing their homes with dogs, canine companions are increasingly playing an important role in our family dynamics. Owning a dog requires responsibility and commitment, but what exactly is involved in dog ownership, and how do you go about it?
Getting a Dog
There are a variety of resources to help you acquire a dog. Personal preferences, lifestyle, family structure, future plans and budget should all be considered before bringing home a pooch.
Breeders
Dog breeders specialize in the mating of specific types of dogs with the intent of maintaining or improving certain characteristics of a breed. The responsibility of a good breeder extends beyond the production of
a litter and involves proper health testing, genetic screening, and temperamental evaluation of breeding stock. Most breeders have their stock registered with the American Kennel Club or a club affiliated with their specific breed, allowing puppies to be accompanied with a pedigree documenting their heritage. Puppies are often placed with people pursuing the show or competition fancy, but are also provided to owners looking for a specific pet. Breeders are legally required to wait until 8 weeks of age before allowing their puppies to go live in their new homes. In some cases breeders require a sales agreement or contract before homing a dog to ensure responsible breeding and ownership practices.
Shelters and Rescue Organizations
Animal shelters and rescue organizations assist in the intake and rehoming of stray, seized, and relinquished pets. Most counties have humane society shelters open to the general public with pets available for viewing or adoption on a daily basis. These are often run in conjunction with the local animal control office
and may promote additional services. Rescue organizations, in contrast, may range from a brick and mortar operation, to one solely relying on a dedicated network of volunteers and foster programs. Rescues commonly invest their efforts and resources into specific causes such as: geriatric canines, particular breeds, or special needs animals. Most shelter and rescue organizations have a routine interview, inspection, and application process before adopting dogs into their new homes.
Online Listings and Pet Shops
Pet shops have been selling live animals for decades, yet an influx in dog ownership has also resulted in the increase of puppy oriented enterprises. Unfortunately the origin of the puppies stocked at pet shops is often doubtful, with puppies potentially stemming from backyard breeders or livestock type puppy mills. The same trend has become popular through the online sales of dogs, where the quality of breeding for health and temperament is questionable at best. The commercial breeding of dogs is not restricted by legislation, requiring prospective owners to inquire

Preventative Health Care
Dogs require regular wellness visits and preventative veterinary care, in order to live long and healthy lives. Proper nutrition, vaccine protocols, parasite control, and health screening tests are all utilized by veterinary practices in order to protect and monitor your pets health.
Wellness and Vaccines
Puppies generally are born with little immunity and require a series of multiple vaccinations in order to provide them initial protection against ailments in their environment. Core protection includes Distemper and Rabies vaccines, however optional shots such as Leptospirosis, Bordatella, and Lyme may be recommended depending on the risk factor for your dog.
Parasite Control
Dogs commonly contract disease-inducing parasites from their surrounding environment including: ticks, mites, worms, and fleas. These can be treated and repelled through a variety of topical and oral products that are usually given on a monthly basis. Veterinarians will also recommend the regular screening for heartworm infestation, as this can be a more life-threatening condition that requires serious intervention for treatment.
Nutrition
A complete and balanced diet is important for the condition and longevity of your pet.
Today’s stores have an abundance of dog foods available ranging in price, quality, and consistency. Wet canned foods, dry kibble, and raw meats are amongst the most common products on the market. Ideally pet foods should contain named meat sources, minimal fillers, and omit bi-products. Your dog should be fed a quality food daily and be supplied with fresh water.
Spaying/Neutering
Surgical alteration of the reproductive system is a common routine practice amongst pets in order to prevent overpopulation and help with specific health issues. In female dogs the procedure is called “spaying”, whereas in males it is termed “neutering”. It is believed that the procedures help prevent certain types of cancers and may assist in minimizing certain behavioral issues. Spay and neuter procedures are commonly conducted during adolescence around 6 months of age, but may be conducted sooner or later depending on the special needs of your canine.
Exercise
Daily exercise helps maintain physical condition, but also provides mental stimulation and opportunities for ongoing socialization. Swimming, hikes, walks, local outings, canine sports, and interactive play helps prevent destructive behavior problems and expels excess energy. Energy requirements and exercise needs may vary from one dog to another. Recreations should be age appropriate with shorter and more frequent activities provided to young puppies and geriatric canines. Specific breeds
such as herding, sporting, and working dogs additionally benefit from dutyoriented past times to help prevent boredom, provide stimulation, and most importantly find appropriate ways to exercise drive and instinct based behavior.
While You Are Out
Alternate accommodations are occasionally necessary during holidays, vacations, emergency situations. There are a variety of care services available including: traditional chain link and concrete kennel boarding kennels, modernized home style facilities, doggy day care centers, and in-home dog walking or pet sitting alternatives. In some households family members may even extend their assistance in caring for your dog when the need arises. The best option is dependent on the individual needs and resources required for any given dog.
Grooming Needs
With a diverse range of dog breeds comes a variety of coats and grooming needs. Some breeds require regular clipper work and hand scissoring in order to maintain their coat whereas others benefit from a routine deshedding bath, brush, and blow-out. Services may extend to toe nail trims, ear cleaning, dental care, and specialist grooming skills such as hand stripping. The cost and frequency of grooming varies greatly depending on size, coat condition, and special needs of the dog. Consideration to grooming needs should be greatly considered when welcoming a dog into your family.
Training
Establishing a routine, instilling good habits, obedience, and control are all vital in your dog’s development into a well mannered household member. A variety options to address training goals are available including group classes, privateat home lessons, and residential 42

Socialization
Safe exposure to a variety of sights, sounds, textures, people, animals, and environments is key in building your dog’s coping mechanism with the world around it. A dog is considered social when it can easily adapt to change and is confident in different circumstances. The most vital time to socialize is during puppyhood at 6-12 weeks of age. During this stage most of the imprinting to novel situations and objects occurs. Dogs that are fearful, skittish, or resistant in certain environments can be remedially socialized with slow desensitization and the help of a certified behavior consultant.
Obedience and Manners
Some dogs can’t stand having their nails done, some even cringe at having their feet touched. Frank prefers to ignore that any of it is happening.
programs. Puppy training, obedience, manners, and minor behavior issues are commonly addressed by certified and accredited dog trainers, whereas more intricate behavior problems require the assistance of a specialized behavior consultant.
Puppy Training
Puppy training primarily focuses on the prevention of behavior problems in adulthood and establishing housebreaking, chewing, biting, and socialization etiquette. Introduction of obedience commands, impulse control, and handling desensitization are also often incorporated. It is far easier to teach and reinforce good behavior early, rather than problem solve and redirect poor habits later on.
General obedience and manners cue include teaching control behaviors such as sit, come, down, stay, loose lead walking, and impulse control to tackle jumping, barking, counter surfing, and chase behaviors. Most conflicts within canine households can easily be resolved through the attendance of a basic obedience class, however more specific issues, especially those related within the home can be tackled through the assistance of a mobile trainer.
Behavior Modification
Intricate and more complex behavioral issues involving fear, anxiety, aggression, shyness, and anti-social behavior may require the assistance of a behavior consultant specialist. These services usually include a diagnosis, prognosis, and detailed behavior modification protocols involving management, redirection, desensitization, and conditioning techniques. Dogs are a wonderful addition to any family, whether you opt to

Fauquier Health Pet Therapy Animals Brighten Patients’ Days “Some people are actually depressed when they have to be in the hospital,” says Fauquier Hospital Pet Therapy team member Joanne Parker. “They are not talking; they may be in pain or feeling anxious.”
Cheryl McAlpine gets a visit from Vinnie in Fauquier Hospital’s Infusion Center.
Enter Vinnie, a big-eyed Chihuahua, who works his magic while sitting on a lap and looking up endearingly. “You can actually see a physical change in patients sometimes,” says Parker. “Families have come up to me to thank me for helping to bring them back. It’s amazing what a difference pet therapy can make.” The thriving Pet Therapy program started at Fauquier Hospital in the fall of 2001. Current chairman of the program, Sheryl Vollrath, came on board in 2004 as the facilitator and the auxiliary named her chairman of Pet Therapy. Vollrath explains that there are eight handlers/owners in the program; they work with 11 specially trained certified/registered pet therapy dogs.

(Some of the handlers have more than one dog.) A pet rep visits patients along with each handler/dog pair; they check with each patient to see if they would like a visit and help clear the area if the patient wants to pet the dog. Visits are made most days of the week, in the
mornings and/or late afternoons -- to most areas of the hospital, except the Emergency Room, the Family Birthing Center, and patients in isolation. Vollrath says, “Our dogs are great goodwill ambassadors of the hospital. Lisa Fox, a longtime volunteer at Fauquier Hospital, joined the Pet Therapy team about six weeks ago with her Shetland Sheepdog, Tess. “The patients really enjoy our visits,” she says. “We take their minds off their troubles, and offer a great distraction. They really enjoy cuddling with Tess.” Patients of all ages seem to enjoy Pet Therapy visits. When Vinnie visited Sam Guberman last week, the smiles came easily. He and his wife have 12 dogs at home and he misses them. Apparently, the feeling is mutual. “When the dogs came into the house after I had left for the hospital, my wife tells me they saw my empty chair and couldn’t figure it out.”

little Vinnie in her lap. Isabella had to stay in the hospital a couple of days, so Vinnie’s visit was a welcome distraction. And Pet Therapy is not just for patients. Parker says that you can always tell when there is a dog visiting on one of the floors of the hospital. Staff members and visitors have been known to coo and even make kissy noises as they reach out a hand to pat a furry head. The sweet, gentle dogs are familiar favorites. A favorite stop for all the Pet Therapy dogs is Fauquier Hospital’s Infusion Center. Those patients often have to sit still for hours at a time as they receive chemotherapy or other 50
treatments. Parker says, “We’ll go in and visit with as many people as would like to see us. Many of the patients have weekly visits at the same times, so they get to know the dogs that visit at that time. Particularly in the Infusion Center, we’ll stay as long as the patients like. Vinnie is a great visitor; he’s small enough to sit on their laps while they pet him. It makes them feel better.” While the Pet Therapy program at the hospital includes only dogs, other animals may be welcome too. Silver the miniature horse and a cat named Chipper visit residents at the Fauquier Health Rehabilitation & Nursing Center and The Villa at Suffield Meadows assisted living facility.

Canine Companions Delight at Warrenton Offices
Bear awaits visitors at Be Boutique
A surprising number of Warrenton businesses have dogs at the office. Ever wonder what it would be like to have your dog with you at work, curled under your desk or in your store? Visitors approach with an added smile. These owners can get away from phone calls and the piles on their desk by taking a walk in town or along one of the many paths around the community. Stress melts away as your loyal companion wags its tail and gives you the look of “okay, let’s go!” It only took a short stroll in town to find several canines on the job. Here are a few of our favorites.
Facts from the American Humane Association • Staff morale and worker productivity increased by bringing pets to work • Increased camaraderie among employees • Happier employees result in enhanced job performance • Increase in sales reported by store owners who take their dogs to work • Dogs can serve as a crime deterrent

Can Anybody Find Me...
Somebody to Love? by Kristin Heydt
Anyone who has come home from a long trip to be greeted by effusive wagging, wiggling, barking and kisses (or, in the case of cats, meowing, nuzzling and purring followed by a healthy dose of passive aggression) knows that animals form an emotional bond with their human companions and communicate that love in ways more profound than words can express. Because of that emotional connection, I just wasn’t sure I was able to make it through my 54
appointment with Caroline Folker, Community Relations Manager with the Fauquier SPCA, with my composure intact. I had prepared myself for seeing room after room and kennel after kennel of terrified, lonely and sad dogs and cats. Fortunately, due to the tender loving care given to the animals housed in the Cassanova based shelter, this couldn’t be further from reality at the sprawling animal care facility. Arriving in the shelter’s waiting
room, I was quietly greeted by a gentle and strikingly beautiful pit-bull terrier mix named Jillian. She wagged her tail softly and led me over to the reception desk where shelter employees and volunteers welcomed me with smiles and stories of the many rescues the shelter has seen throughout the years. The wall behind the desk is covered with pictures and letters from the many families who have adopted animals from the shelter over the years. “We love getting updates from Warrenton Lifestyle
the families,” Ms. Folker said, “In fact, many dogs who still live in the area come back for visits. It feels good to know that they remember us as a positive experience with a happy ending.” After I had a moment to look the cards and letters over and snap a few photos of this wall of fame, Jillian reminded me that it was time to continue with my tour. First stop: the enormous shopping basket filled with colorful squeaky toys donated by Petco for the shelter to sell as a means of fundraising. Jillian clearly wished to emphasize how much donations from the community are appreciated by the animals at the shelter. In addition to the donation of toys and treats to the shelter animals, the Fauquier SPCA maintains a “Wish List” link on their website for items in the greatest need. As she led me through the doors to the sun filled lobby, her ears perked up to a commotion in the kitten room. We walked closer, and saw that Kim Housman, a volunteer who regularly comes to the shelter to “snuggle the kittens and give them love” was just settling in for an afternoon of fuzzy fun and games. Jillian looked at me dubiously as if to say, “They’re cute, but full of mischief. I’m glad Ms. Kim is here to help them learn to be nice.” We walked on to the adult cat adoption center, where a wall of enclosures faced a huge picture window facing a courtyard with multiple bird feeders. “Cat TV,” Jillian explained. The adult cats seemed as entranced by the antics of a squirrel attempting a raid on one of the feeders as movie goers were during the casino heist in Ocean’s Eleven. When I approached their cages, the beautiful variety of felines available for adoption floored me. Every variety of cat imaginable is represented, and they all turned their attention away from the goings on outdoors to show their interest in the new visitor. Perhaps inspired by the afternoon’s entertainment, one cat decided to burglarize his upper neighbor by extending a front paw into the cage above, adroitly thieving a toy from his roommate, while simultaneously winking at me as if to say, “Watch this!”. With a laugh, one of the volunteers in the adoption center playfully chastised “Loki” as the sneaky culprit, opened his cage and stroked his beautifully marked black and tan coat. “We try to encourage as much [human] interaction as possible. That way adopters have a better idea of how a particular animal will fit into their home & family.” With a gentle nudge, Jillian reminded me that it was time to continue my tour. She showed me the shelter’s shop, outfitted with basic necessities for animal s ring r, Kim Housman play ee nt lu vo CA SP ur’s P: TO kittens CENTER: Arth master to a circus of rd on the shelter’s grounds Place, a fenced in yaronment for exercise and play provides a safe envi there. care, plus little extras like commemorative picture frames and decorative accessories. All proceeds go right back to caring for animals, and the shop adds a level of convenience to bringing a new member into the household. The shelter also offers microchipping services to the community at a fraction of the cost of veterinary hospitals during their quarterly Rabies Vaccination and Microchipping clinics. A chip about the size of a grain of rice is placed under the animal’s skin and registered to the owner’s address. Should the animal get lost, most shelters and veterinary clinics have equipment to read the information on the chip. All dogs and cats adopted out of the Fauquier SPCA are equipped with microchips. To help control overpopulation, all animals are also sterilized (spayed/neutered) before leaving the shelter. The 100% sterilization program allows the Fauquier SPCA to maintain special accreditation to place animals in loving homes nationwide. Without 56
these services they would be required to adopt only to the local area. Given our rural location, the shelter could soon run out of suitable homes for an abundance of animals. As Jillian and I proceeded to the dog kennels, something occurred to me. Aside from the piped in soft jazz, and the whirring of fans, it was pretty quiet and peaceful for a room with forty or so canines. “Nap time,” Jillian remarked, yawning. In almost every enclosure, tuckered-out dogs looked positively peaceful as they bunked down on their cots and in their baskets. “We try to make sure that they get sufficient physical activity while they’re here. It helps with their mental well being as much as their physical health. Just like people,” Director of Shelter Operations, Cinda Bailey Rambow explained. In any group nap scenario, there are always one or two outliers, but even they sat at the door of their bunks, quietly wagging their tails or chewing on nylabones. Bert, a Basset Hound/American Foxhound mix looked at me as if to say, “while I would rather be in a home with a sofa
to lay on and kids to play with, the people here are nice, and I feel loved.” Jillian yawned again and began to mosey off to her bed behind the shelter’s reception desk. Her final remarks to me as she drifted off to dreamland, “This is a nice place. I’m glad that I work in a place where love multiplies….” It took me a moment to understand what she meant. From the minute animals enter the shelter, they are given love that perhaps they’ve never seen or known, and in turn, they learn how to love. When they are placed in their forever homes, the families they join are touched by their love and companionship, and then return a shower of that love back on the shelter through cards, letters, visits and support. From the cheerful interior to the smiling faces on the employees and volunteers cleaning up after and caring for the animals, that love pervades the atmosphere at the Fauquier SPCA shelter. Come visit, find somebody to love. The Fauquier SPCA is located at 9350 Rogues Road, Casanova, VA and www.FauquierSPCA.org. Warrenton Lifestyle

GRANITE HEIGHTS WINERY Creative Winery Emerges from Civil War History
A century and a half ago, in a country torn by war, Confederate soldiers made camp on a stretch of farmland not far from where the main farmhouse at Granite Heights Winery has stood well over 100 years. As earth is disturbed for the planting of the new vines, on the plot just south of Warrenton near Opal, bullets and tools from the farms long history are still being uncovered. Sadder times have been replaced with vitality and joy, and the farmhouse is full of laughter and flowing wine. The winery, which opened to the public in 2012, retains the air of a small country farm. Owners, Luke and Toni Kilyk, operate the entire production themselves, bringing in help only during harvest and bottling. With busy professional lives, he’s a patent attorney, she’s a physician, the hand tended nature of their products takes on an even more remarkable context. In the outset of starting a Virginia vineyard winery from scratch, the Kilyk’s had the foresight to seek out advice from the best: Lucie Morton, a Virginian viticulturalist well known in the global wine industry for pioneering the renaissance of high-density planting; a concept that had attracted Luke in his original research. Like on several other Virginia vineyard sites, Morton advised that the Granite Heights vines should be planted tightly together: around two-thousand per acre. This approach forces the vines to compete for nutrients in the rich soil, decreasing
individual yield, but lending a depth to the finished flavors. It’s not all seriousness, though. The uttermost attention to detail found in the wines can also be found in the winery’s meticulously outfitted themed club rooms. Open only to winery club members, visitors experience the Kilyk’s lighter side with rooms dedicated to the couple’s other loves: their dogs, their love of history, and their love of pop culture, in particular the movie, A Christmas Story and the nonsensical sitcom Seinfeld. Granite Heights Winery’s six wine sample flight changes constantly, so return guests will always find something new. Their white wines are all aged in stainless steel to let the unadulterated flavors of the grapes come forward, unobscured by oak. While this makes the Chardonnay fruity with a bit of acidity, like a crisp pear and lemon, it tells a different story with one of the up-and-coming varietals in Virginia: Petit Manseng. Depending on the year, this grape can wear a variety of masks. The aroma of the 2011 vintage, for example, is bright, clean and loaded with green apples, while the 2012 is rich and bursting with sweet peaches. Granite Heights Winery’s reds are equally interesting. For a summer day, the “End of the Road” red blend is mediumbodied and smooth. Comprised primarily of Cabernet Franc, the telltale pepper bite is rounded out with the addition of 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. The “Evening
Serenade” is Merlot-based with a bit more fruit showing through. Single varietal wines include a luxurious 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. While not overpowering, the added body lends a warmth that makes it an attractive glass-filler… and re-filler. It is only released during August and November, however, and is just now coming into the peak years of its age. Time to stock up. As if this jewel of a farm weren’t idyllic enough, a quaint orchard sidles up next to the vineyard. From its spoils, Toni crafts the most delectable jams and preserves you’ve ever tasted. Creativity abounds in the unique flavor combinations like Blackberry Sage, and Ginger Peach, both available for purchase in the tasting room. The tasting room itself is closed during the winter, but from April through November it’s a serene weekend retreat for all, even your dog. Luke and Toni are always welcoming of questions and conversation about their passion for handmade wine.
