hen I was growing up, I was an outdoorsy tomboy. I was always outside in the woods. I loved hiking and swimming in the rivers of New Hampshire. The river was my favorite thing in the summer. When we were quite young, my best friends’ and my beginning-of-summer tradition was to swim in the river on Memorial day to celebrate. Now, in New Hampshire, the river at the end of May consisted of melting ice running off the mountains. It was a downright cold experience. We would build “fish traps,” basically little ponds formed with rocks at the edge of the river, and the tiny minnows would swim in and out again. Then, as we grew up, we would wash our hair under the waterfalls, using Dr. Bronner’s castile soap, which is organic and biodegradable — we were very environmentally conscious. The scent of Dr. Bronner’s, even today, transports me back to the river. And, as we got older, the river was a favorite place for “gathering” with friends. No need to elaborate further on that. Funny how you always think that your children are going to like the same things you did when you were young. Wrong in my case: my daughter was, and is, a girly-girl. No playing outside for her, not much, anyway. No sledding in the winter (it’s too cold, she said, and I bundled her up so much that she couldn’t move) or playing or swimming in streams in the summer (too many bugs, she said, and there was mud). This was not the childhood I envisioned for my daughter. That being said, she turned out pretty well regardless of the lack of outdoor recreation in her youth. But I think that playing outside and being active in the summer is something that all children should do. And in this county, our Fauquier Parks and Recreation organization maintains 941 maintained acres of land and 122 acres of water, most of it in our local parks. Definitely something to take advantage of. Crockett Park, in Midland, offers a fantastic array of outdoor activities, especially on their lake where you can fish, canoe, and kayak. They even have boat rentals. And we have a new park to check out this summer: the Riverside Preserve. It’s a Marshall address, but it’s actually off Leeds Manor Road between Warrenton and Orlean — an easy drive from town. The 196-acre parcel was generously donated to the county and put into a conservation easement. It offers a location for lots of outdoor activities and includes the only river frontage on the Rappahannock River in Fauquier County. It’s available for fishing and as a canoe/kayak put-in location, which canoeists and kayakers will appreciate, since those are hard to come by on the private property which lines the rest of the Rappahannock in the county. Another lover of the outdoors, and proponent of children experiencing the outdoors to the fullest and learning environmental conservation, is being honored this month. Doc Snyder, who founded Verdun Adventure Bound which offers a plethora of outdoor activities, will be honored there on July 20 for his contributions to our community. All are welcome to attend. So enjoy the summer outside!

HELPING YOUR PET BECOME HAPPY AND CONFIDENT IN THE CAR
t’s summertime, and what could be better than taking off for a family vacation? For a lot of families, that includes the family dog(s). The idealistic image of a happy dog sitting quietly in the car next to an open window with his fur ruffling in the breeze as you approach the beach comes to mind. But what if your dog isn’t comfortable in a car? What if he gets car sick? (Now there’s a favorite part of a family vacation: cleaning up after an incident). What if he gets stressed and afraid? Or he becomes overexcited and overstimulated so he’s a pain to travel with? Do you want to subject him to a long ride? Can you stand it yourself? There are

things you can do to help your dog become more comfortable in your vehicle and make those family dreams become a reality. The first thing to do is figure out why your dog doesn’t like rides in the car. Perhaps he suffers from motion sickness. Perhaps he’s afraid of the car because he associates
}
it with unpleasant destinations, the vet, for example. Perhaps he is suffering from general anxiety which manifests during car rides. Perhaps he is overstimulated with all the sights and sounds outside the car and reacts with fear or frustration. The good news is there are things you can do to condition your dog to riding in the car, making it a much more pleasurable experience for him, and for you. Car sickness and nausea can cause aversion to car travel. In some cases, cracking a window can help. Speak with your vet; he may recommend Dramamine or Diphenhydramine in mild cases, but they can have side effects. For extreme cases, ask

Training for positive car associations PHASE 1:
ENTERING THE CAR STEP 1: Reward your dog heavily with lots of treats or games for walking towards the car. Discontinue the rewards as you move away from the car, so he has the good associations with actually approaching the vehicle and is not rewarded for leaving it.
him about Cerenia, as this medication was specifically designed to help traveling pets. When a dog dislikes the car because he associates it with things that are not fun, you can easily fix that. Take your dog on frequent short trips in the car to enjoyable outings, such as the dog park, the pet store, a hike, or a visit to friends or family where he gets lots of positive and loving stimulation. He’ll soon associate the car with fun things and won’t be so reluctant to enter the vehicle. When a dog becomes overstimulated in the car, resulting in barking and lunging at things passing by, the most effective remedy is good old-fashioned training. Identify the things that trigger the behavior and work on gradually desensitizing him to those stresses. Simply work each individual step, rewarding for confidence and ensuring your dog is happy and calm before progressing. Some dogs simply do not know how to cope with riding in a car, and may become anxious. In this case, training comes in again; it is vital to slowly counter-condition and desensitize the dog to what is causing him stress, and be sure to proceed at his own speed. If the dog is showing lack of coping skills in multiple environments, and the car is just one of many places the dog shows stress, then generalized anxiety may be a concern. Speak with your vet about whether or not Clomicalm / Clomipramine may be a good supplemental medication to aid alongside behavior modification. ❖
STEP 2: Reward your dog for standing next to the car, with the doors closed. If he knows the “touch” command, progress to asking him to touch the car with his nose. STEP 3: Reward your dog for going towards the entrance of the car, either an open side door or a hatch open in the back. Reinforce him for looking in that direction, and for sniffing or inspecting the entrance. Continue rewarding as he sticks his head into the car. STEP 4: Encourage your dog to place his paws in the entrance to the car. Lure him in with treats, or lift the paw for him yourself and place it in the car. Help him by boosting his hind end up once he has his front paws in. Offer a huge reward for jumping in by himself.
PHASE 2: STAYING RELAXED IN THE CAR
STEP 1: Reward
your dog for being in the car, ensuring the engine is off at this point. Make a game out of it, praising and feeding treats that he especially loves when he displays happiness and confidence in the car. If you are using a crate, hide treats or food-dispensing toys in it and let him spend some quiet, non-stressful time playing there. STEP 2: Repeat the above step, only with the engine turned on and the car in park. You may need to be very patient with him as some dogs will show signs of stress once they hear the engine. Go slowly and reward for calm behaviour and happiness and confidence.
PHASE 3:
ACTUALLY RIDING IN THE CAR STEP 1: Start with just moving the car up and down the driveway, rewarding heavily for calm behavior. STEP 2: Progress to a very short trip down the road, rewarding heavily. Stop about a quarter mile down the road and get out and walk the dog home. He will associate positive activities with the car ride. STEP 3: Increase the trips incrementally and slowly, keeping a close eye on him to determine what about the car ride triggers stress responses or behavior issues. It could be the amount of time spent in the car, the distance, or the speed. Take a step backward and work on these things again, only progressing to the next step when he is calm, confident, and happy. STEP 4: Use extra highvalue treats (ones that he normally goes crazy for) or toys when going on longer car rides to keep him occupied and happy.
Tips for travel: ✘ Use a crate to keep your pet contained in the car. Consider placing a blanket or beach towel on top for dogs who become over stimulated, or suffer from nausea. Limiting visual triggers can greatly reduce stress. Alternatively use window clings to tint or block off visual stimuli.
✘ Consider having someone ride next to him in the car to keep him calm and to give treats. Use food dispensing toys (like Kongs, Sumo, or Titan) or chews (rawhides, antlers, bully sticks) to keep him occupied for the trip. If need be, skip a meal to increase his interest in the treats or chewys.
✘ Only release your pet out of the car when he is calm and controlled. Use the “wait” command to exit or enter the vehicle or crate.

hen I think of summer, the song “Summertime, and the Livin' is Easy” pops right into my head. Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors and the weather, maybe go to the beach or travel abroad, and nowadays, our technology can travel with us almost everywhere we go. There are considerations when traveling with your devices in the summer; here are some tips to keep them safe. PROTECTION FROM THE HEAT. Last summer I left my iPhone in the car for thirty minutes. Even though it was a shady parking place, when I came back, I noticed a temperature gauge and message on my screen telling me that my “iPhone needs to cool down.” Only emergency calls would have been possible. Heat is a killer for electronics, and luckily Apple built in a warning system and some protection to minimize damage. Extreme heat can even cause a battery to explode, so try to keep your devices as cool as possible. For laptops, you can use a cooling fan that sits underneath the device. Most of these fans employ a USB port for power, so they can be used anywhere. In the event that a device does become overheated, don’t put it in the freezer! The condensation will cause more damage. PROTECTION FROM LIQUIDS. Liquid is another killer for electronics. Every year, we get lots of clients bringing in laptops that were inadvertently “baptised” with a Coke, wine, or water. A sugary coffee latte is even worse. If you spill a drink on your
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
laptop keyboard, you should first unplug the power cord and shut down the device. Then, lay the device upside down so the liquid can — hopefully — run out. The keyboard should be removed and all traces of liquid be carefully absorbed. Just letting it dry by itself might lead to corrosion and the system will then malfunction. Depending on the amount and type of liquid, your device may need a professional cleaning. The good news is that even if the laptop is ruined, often the data can be retrieved by taking the hard drive out and connecting it via adapters to another computer. PROTECTION FROM SAND. Isn’t it great to sit under an umbrella at the beach and play a game on your phone, tablet, or laptop? But please avoid getting sand in your devices — especially the laptop keyboard. It will not shortcut your system but might cause keys to malfunction or clog power and headset plugs. To protect your cell phone, you might consider a heavy-duty waterproof case that not only hinders breakage from dropping, but prevents damage from liquids and sand. DON’T RUN OUT OF POWER. Nowadays, the charge in a phone does not seem to last throughout a day. When out and about in the city, on the beach, or on a hike, it helps if you have an extra fully-charged battery pack with you; these are very affordable now. This summer I am trying out a solar charger I can mount on my back-pack. There are also beach chairs with a built-in solar panel charger available. DON’T FORGET YOUR DEVICES AT HOME.
To protect your devices that are left at home, turn them off and unplug the power and ethernet cables. In the summer, thunderstorms are likely and a power surge or lightning strike can cause severe damage to electronics and can even lead to a fire. BACKUP BEFORE YOU GO. Whether you leave your devices at home or take your technology on vacation with you, it’s best to first make a backup. That way if you break or lose a device, you’re covered. The device is replaceable, but not your data. Wishing you a most enjoyable summer break, with or without technology. ❖

Fauquier County Students Excel in Writing Patriotic Essays BY JEFF DOMBROFF, COMMANDER, POST 9835 VFW

or more than 70 years, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) has been conducting annual student essay contests open to middle and high School students (including home-schooled students) throughout the nation. Known as “Patriot’s Pen” and “Voice of Democracy,” these contests are conducted in the early fall of each year, with winning essays advancing through various levels to potentially earn national recognition and monetary awards for their authors. The “Voice of Democracy” competition, open to students in 9th through 12th grades, requires the student to submit a recorded essay on a patriotic topic chosen by the VFW’s National
Commander. Essays must be between three and five minutes in length and are judged on originality, content, and delivery. This year’s theme was “Why My Vote Matters.” “Patriot’s Pen” is open to students from 6th through 8th grades. These essays are submitted in writing and must be

I honor the American flag because it helped me find my true potential. You don’t have to be born in the U.S. to love the flag. You don’t have to look American or have an American background. You have to treat others equally and be treated equally. It matters that you stay truthful to yourself through any battle in your life. At Ft. McHenry, the flag stood through the War of 1812, clinging to the little piece of hope that lingered on through all the bloodshed and tears. I, too, have stood true to myself through conflict and tears. On February 5, 2008, I was adopted from a country many American soldiers gave their lives to protect. I officially became a US citizen, but I didn’t always feel like one. When I first started school, I felt uncomfortable saying the Pledge of Allegiance, staring up at the flag, because kids always asked me questions about my parents, my adoption, and where I was from. It was as though they thought I was an alien. As I got older, I started caring less and less about what other kids thought. I kept saying to myself, “Let them look, let them think what they want, but this country is where I know who I am.” After that realization, I carried on through each day no matter what words or questions were thrown at me. The flag made me feel included, not unworthy. Now, I take pride in my American ancestry. My great-greatgreat grandfather fought at the Battles of Concord and Bunker Hill. The Stars and Stripes were there with him, the thirteen stripes symbolizing the original colonies, including my family’s own ancestral state of Massachusetts. The red on the flag symbolizes valor, the courage of those who fought there, and my own courage in asserting myself here, too. The white stripes on the flag symbolize the purity of the motives for which my ancestors fought, and it also symbolizes the original goodness of every American citizen. The blue on the flag symbolizes the justice of their cause and their perseverance in fighting for it, and it also symbolizes my own perseverance to serve my country in the best possible way I can.

“As a nation, how can we stand by while morality is compromised for the sake of defeating another party?” Voice of Democracy: Why My Vote Matters ELANOR LAMBERT FRESTA VALLEY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL During the 2016 election, I was glad to be too young to vote. It seemed like no matter how a person voted, they were doing the wrong thing, dooming America as we know it. I had no idea how my parents were going to vote, but I knew that they were dreading it. After the election, I learned that they had both voted third party. At first I was confused, and then I was upset. I thought that by voting third party, they were throwing away their vote. I thought that because a third party could never win, they were just giving one more vote to a larger candidate. I thought that their vote didn’t matter. As a nation, how can we stand by while morality is compromised for the sake of defeating another party? This cannot be the purpose of voting. If a person is willing to compromise their beliefs for the sake of the system, then they are working against justice. They are silencing their own beliefs for the sake of their faction. The results of an election are no longer what the people desire, but what the other party does not desire. This mentality is twisted and wrong. James Madison, one of America’s founding fathers, saw this becoming an issue in a popular government. He wrote, “A zeal for different opinions…have, in turn, divided mankind into parties, inflamed them with mutual animosity, and rendered them much more disposed to vex and oppress each other than to cooperate for their common good.” (Madison, 4) For so many people in America, the purpose of their vote is to defeat the other side. I believe that the meaning of my vote is for the common good. When the system seems so rigged towards either Republicans or Democrats and no one else, voting third party can feel like yelling your opinion into the void. Seeing the factions of voters fighting against each other, voting only to tear the other side down, and resorting to violence in some cases, proves that voting for the sake of conscience is difficult, but necessary. I believe that justice and freedom are the most important values of our nation. If I don’t vote with those values in mind, then my vote is meaningless. For my vote to matter, I must stand up for myself, and vote to protect those values. Even if it means voting for a candidate that no one believes will win, I cannot, under any circumstance, compromise my beliefs. Protecting the values of our nation, and following through with my civic duty, means voting with integrity. Even if the people around me seem to be shouting me down and shutting me up, I cannot sacrifice that integrity. I wasn’t blessed with the ability to vote so that I could use it to tear down my fellow Americans. My ability to vote should be used to build up this nation for the common good and protect the unalienable rights of every single American citizen- no matter their political party. I don’t want my children to grow up in a word where they must choose a side. I want them to live with the confidence that they can stand up for their beliefs, even if it means voting in a way that seems futile to others. I want them to know that their voice matters. I can’t do that without leading by example. Next year, I will be able to vote. I hope that I will be informed as to who I am voting for, and make my decision based on the American values of freedom and justice. If I do not follow through with my beliefs, then my vote was meaningless. Looking back to the 2016 election, I realize that my parents’ votes were not for nothing. I realize that they were standing up for their beliefs, even if it led to opposition from every side. They wanted to change this country for the better, so they spoke their mind at the polls. If I ever want to see the end of the downward spiral of political factions, I must do the same. I must stand up, even if it means going against the system. My vote matters, because with it, I can build up this nation, and influence others to do the same. My vote matters, because I matter, and because this nation matters.
and Fresta Valley Christian School) along with one student from Eastern View High School in Culpeper submitted “Voice of Democracy” entries to the Warrenton-based Robert E. Laing Memorial VFW Post 9835. The Post received “Patriot’s Pen” entries from Middle School students at Auburn Middle School, Cedar Lee Middle School, SE Alternative School, Wakefield School, Warrenton Middle School, Highland School, and W. C. Taylor Middle School. The Post’s top three entries in “Patriot’s Pen” and the winner of “Voice of Democracy” were forwarded to the 8th District for further judging. There, Fauquier County students more than held their own against some formidable entries. Elanor Lambert (12th grade, Fresta Valley Christian School) earned District third place honors for her entry in “Voice of Democracy.” Heather Wilson (8th grade, Auburn Middle School) took second place with her “Patriot’s Pen” entry while Arden Manson, a 6th grade student at The Wakefield School, took first place and advanced to state level competition. There, against the top entries from throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, Arden’s essay was selected as the best in the State. The topics for 2019 will be announced in mid-summer and we encourage students to participate. ❖ ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jeff Dombroff is the Commander of VFW Post 9835. He is an Army veteran of Vietnam and retired in 2006 from the Navy Federal Credit Union. He has resided in Fauquier County since 1990 with his wife Susan. They have two children and four grandchildren.

H
ow do you become a better writer, or publish a book? Many writers depend heavily on, and learn from, the advice and suggestions of other writers, both published and unpublished. The give-and-take conversations, the teasing apart of themes and paragraphs, and the friendly camaraderie have long been a tradition among writers as they develop their craft and weave their stories. Sometimes writers formed formal or informal groups to discuss works in progress. One such group, the Inklings Society, originated in the 1930s and ’40s at Oxford University and was comprised of a group of about

then, other groups of writers have formed similar informal groups and resurrected the Inklings nickname. Now Allegro Community School of the Arts has started their own Inlinkgs Society for the community. Although it doesn’t serve beer like Lewis and Tolkien enjoyed together, the camaraderie that is offered and the opportunity for local writers to congregate, critique, encourage, and connect exists all the same. The addition of this new program will expose both new writers and seasoned published writers of all ages to an audience for collaborative feedback.

Board member Aimee O’Grady explains that even simply reading your own work out loud can really change how you see it and the effect it can have on your readers as an audience. The writer’s retreat for Inklings Society is designed to be available for anyone who needs somewhere to write or even do homework. The relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in the Allegro basement at 5 Culpeper Street is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with Thursday night meetups from 5:30-6:30 p.m. so that writers can meet other like-minded individuals and present their work for critique and encouragement. The Inklings Society is a new venture that will include speakers and workshops from both local and regional authors. O’Grady enthusiastically explains that writers can even request a workshop

or speaker on any specific topic that interests them. “If someone requests it, we will do our best to find a speaker for it,” she says. While the program is not specifically designed for just the young writers, O’Grady says that providing this type of literacy education can help kids to become more deliberate about what they are writing, not just limiting it to a certain number of words or letters for social media. Writing stories forces them to develop characters, situations, and resolutions while also encouraging them to add descriptions and emotions to their works. In fact, Allegro has formed a partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs to enhance these children’s lives by meeting with them monthly to write parts of a story together. While kids more often than not see writing as a form of punishment, these visits have changed the narrative into something they enjoy. Their first story began with writing first-person scripts from the mind of a soldier and then somehow moved on to sea monsters. Each student writes from their own character’s pointof-view and each character has a chapter. O’Grady explains that this partnership also allows them to develop talents of kids who have an affinity for drawing too so illustrating the story can be their specific contribution to the book. These kids could quite possibly go on to be published in the future. What a positive experience for kids in our community. No matter how the Inklings Society evolves and takes shape, it is sure to produce a whole new generation of new authors and new stories to captivate those of us who get lost in a book. ❖ www.allegrocsa.org/classes-literacy
The addition of this literary arm adds to the already impressive list of creative programs offered at Allegro, including recording and visual arts, music therapy, choirs and vocal ensembles, orchestra, vocal theatre, dance, and even creative aging and music academy for the blind. With the theatre program giving kids and adults an outlet for creative talents behind the scenes with costumes, scenery, and lighting and even props and woodworking, those who do have the courage for the stage will hone skills in public speaking, confidence, and simply standing in front of an audience. Twice a year — once in the fall and once in the spring — thespians act out their characters on stage for the community.

farm to brew PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE
Powers Farm and Brewery of Midland inspires locavore lifestyle with CSAs for vegetables, flowers, and beer Q&A WITH KEVIN AND MELODY POWERS
K
evin and Melody Powers have always been very interested in quality and sustainable foods and the locavore principles, even back in college. They started attending sustainable agriculture conferences, and even while learning about types of farming they didn’t intend to pursue, they were inspired and energized by those who, as they explained, could “bootstrap their way into an agriculture operation.” They continued, “These experts made it all seem very approachable and fun, even though we knew at the time from our limited but growing experience that it’s all primarily a ton of work.” Fast forward to 2019: Kevin and Melody have made their sustainable agricultural dreams come true with Powers Farm and Brewery, an integrated sustainable farm, hopyard, and brewery in southern Fauquier County where they offer vegetable, flower, and beer CSAs as well as welcome guests to their brewery. Lifestyle sat down with Kevin and Melody, and they gave us a glimpse into their enterprise. TELL US ABOUT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CSAS AND BREWING OPERATION.
The plans for the CSA and Brewery have been in progress since we moved to Fauquier county in 2012. Our original property was in New Baltimore, that’s when we acquired Aggie, our solo and misfit sheep you’ll recognize from our logo. Then we realized that the farm and brewery combo we were envisioning
FACEBOOK @POWERSFARMBREWERY
would do better at a more rural location, so we moved everything to Meetze Road in 2016, and we both started working full time on the farm. Kevin started to focus on building and then operating the brewing operation. HOW DOES YOUR CSA WORK?
Our CSA runs during the summer months with a large variety of fresh, sustainably grown vegetables, fruits, and herbs harvested fresh each week. Customers pick up an allotted amount of fresh produce every week. The primary benefit is that what you’re eating is the freshest and most flavorful produce available, which is at its height of nutritional value. There are no chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides used in raising our produce, so it’s healthier. Customers also often include either one or both of our two other programs: the Cut Flower CSA, which includes a bouquet of fresh picked flowers from our farm each week, and our Field Beer CSA, which includes a discounted weekly growler fill. WHEN DID THE BREWING OPERATION BECOME A PART OF YOUR ENTERPRISE? HOW DID YOU START?
Our brewing experience is entirely based on homebrewing, which we had done for about ten years before opening, and an enormous amount of reading, which Kevin really enjoys and had plenty of time for
during VRE train rides to and from the city when he was still commuting. DOES THE LOCAVORE PRINCIPLE ALSO APPLY TO YOUR BREWING OPERATION?
Absolutely. Our hops are grown on our property; we grow some traditional American varieties, strung on our trellis system built from on-property cedar posts. Our brewery focuses on brewing a variety of beer styles that feature ingredients from our fields. It’s set up as an extension of our farm, with small batches made right next to our field. We plan each of our recipes to be centered on a farm ingredient — cones from our hop yard, herbs, fruit, and even vegetables from the same field that powers our Produce CSA — and even some fun projects with other local growers, especially around barley and malt. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BEER. HOW MANY VARIETIES ARE AVAILABLE?
We brew a constantly rotating set of beers in small batches, with recipes being developed on a weekly basis depending on what herbs, fruits, and produce are ready in the field. Everything is centered around seasonality, just like our produce and flower CSAs. But for some examples, we have our "Elderflower Kolsch" coming up in July, which is a cold-fermented and unfiltered ale with grapefruit and orange flavors from the fresh-picked elderflowers which
were added during the brewing process. Another example of a brew coming up is our "Achilles" Yarrow Porter which is brewed with field picked yarrow flowers. Long ago, yarrow flowers were added to beer instead of hops. The flowers give it a slightly licorice flavor which balances nicely with the roasty smoothness of the oat porter. Other seasonal brews that you may see in the tap room this summer include our Lavender Grissette, Blackberry Saison and a new Strawberry Wild Ale. We have a new beer almost every week as the growing seasons evolve. IS POWERS BEER CURRENTLY SOLD ANYWHERE OTHER THAN ON THE FARM?
The vast majority of beer is sold in our taproom, but we do work with a handful of local restaurants who don’t mind dealing with our kind of extreme seasonality of beer

offerings. Our volume is pretty limited, just given the brewing system size we chose to go with that fits best with our land and farming operation, but the handful of great people we work with regularly includes Molly’s Pub in Warrenton, Field & Main in Marshall, and Harry’s Pub, which is part of the Airlie Conference Center. DO YOU PARTNER WITH ANY LOCAL FOOD BUSINESSES?
As much as we possibly can! On the CSA level we partner with other Fauquier farms to make things more convenient for our customers and help offer a wider range of products for their weekly visit with us. Last year we offered a CSA add-on from Whiffletree Farm, run by our friends Jesse and Liz Straight, to offer a meat share from his sustainably run farm that works very similarly to our Produce CSA. We also offered an Egg Share from our next door neighbors, Misty Meadows Farm. In the brewery we work with other local companies on two levels — as part of beer production as well as on the food truck side. When we design our beers, we’re primarily working with fruits and vegetables from our farm but sometimes we find out about great ag products we don’t have ourselves that we can get from nearby farms. A good example of this is the

hibiscus we get from Sharkawi Farm; Sabry’s meticulous growing practices can be seen in the high quality of his herbs. Similarly, we get blackberries from our neighbors Allen and Jennifer Hynes at Misty Meadows Farms for our popular blackberry saison and Bounty peaches from Roy and Janet in Sperryville for a summer grisette we brewed. We have food trucks out to the brewery on weekends, and they are all local. Some are fellow farmers that also maintain a food truck, like Happy Family Ranch and The Sauer Kraut — both raise most or all of the meat they prepare as part of their dishes. Some of our other vendors aren’t farmers themselves but do a lot of local sourcing, like Talk of the Mountain Seafood from Warrenton. SO COMMUNITY IS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Absolutely. We’re big believers in supporting other local businesses, and the benefits multiply exponentially. We think it’s great to be able to participate in something that does so much good, and even in a small way helps create and support the kind of community we want to live and work in. ❖ Powers Farm and Brewery powersfarmbrewery.com 540-272-5060 9269 Redemption Way, Midland

SUMMER FUN The LOVEwork sign at Airlie
Plan your summer of
LOVEwork at Luray Caverns Truth be told, our first foray with the LOVEworks signs began six years ago at Luray Caverns. The kids were much younger and loved climbing on it, and we loved the new and fun photo op.

I
f you’ve traveled on major highways like Route 66, I-95, I-64 you’ve seen the white metal LOVE signs at the rest stops. Even downtown Manassas has one at the train tracks. We’ve been known to take a family selfie at these signs, and two summers ago I was inspired to research their origin and our state’s slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers.” I discovered that Virginia’s “LOVEworks” campaign is comprised of more than 140 LOVE signs and each represents the culture of its community. Always trying to keep my family active (or as my husband might argue, not letting anyone rest), I decided in June of 2017 that we were going to hit as many LOVE signs as we could within a two-hour drive. Thus began our “Summer of Love.”

LOVEwork at Airlie Airie is a hotel and conference center in Warrenton that, in addition to being a historic building, is a pioneer among environmentally friendly hotels. Their LOVEwork sign was the first in Warrenton, and true to its reputation, is constructed with 95% recycled material. In the L are wine bottles, the O is an old farm tractor tire, the V is a trellis with vines growing in it and reminiscent of the Pont des Art Bridge in Paris, the E allows ‘love locks’ to be attached. After couples bring their lock and attach it, there is a special box in the tractor tire used to throw away the key. (Very romantic!)
LOVEwork at Culpeper Depot Despite its incorrectly spelled name (there really ought to be two p’s in pepper), Culpeper has a fascinating history. It was originally named Fairfax; was a crossroads for armies marching through Virginia during the Civil War; and is home to The State Theater, an art deco theater opened in 1938. The theater has had several lives, including playing a part during segregation and being reborn and partnering with The Library of

Congress. It is currently closed but shines a light on the fact that movies and the arts have always been a part of the city’s history. We discovered a quaint walking town, and a historic train station. Across from the train station is the Culpeper Loveworks sign called “Reel LOVE” because it is made of movie reels. There is a train that can take you from Manassas to Culpeper if you’re curious.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP, RIGHT: The LOVEwork signs in Purcellville, Orange, Leesburg, Culpeper, Liberty Mills, and at Morias Vineyard.
LOVEwork in Orange
LOVEwork in Leesburg In Leesburg, there’s an entrance to the W&OD (Washington & Old Dominion Railroad) trail, well-known for bikers and trail runners. The LOVE sign here was designed by a local artist and metal fabricator and is made of wheels and tire spokes.
LOVEwork in Purcellville At the end of the W&OD trail is Purcellville. The Purcellville LOVEworks sign represents Loudoun County’s winery industry and has wine labels and corks from all 35 Loudoun wineries and art from local artists as well. Purcellville is an old town, founded in the 1740s, and we found that it was chock full of boutiques and antique stores that our entire family enjoyed exploring. (It must be noted that the adults did not care so much for finding relics from our childhood in said “antique” stores.) It too was a critical
juncture in the Civil War and as such, the “Great Road” was constructed to connect the city to Leesburg and eventually on to Alexandria, as the precursor to the W&OD trail. Sadly many of Purcellville’s historic buildings were destroyed in two fires, but the town was able to survive thanks to the railroad. The historic train station was a treat and you can learn more about the city in it.
LOVEwork at Morias Vineyard Bonus - we went to a winery and it had a LOVEwork sign! No history here, but, this particular winery is constructed completely out of cement, even the sign.
Orange County is best known for being home to James Madison, father of our Constitution and his home, Montpelier. The LOVE sign was constructed by a local blacksmith and the L is representative of the Constitution, the O represents the civil war and the county’s involvement in it, the V has vines representing Orange County’s wine industry and the E has horseshoes representing the equestrian history and culture of the area. The sign and Orange County’s beautiful historic buildings were fun to explore.
LOVEwork in Liberty Mills Farm This LOVEwork sign was a tricky one to find. Waze steered us in the wrong direction and we were driving around farmland for quite some time until we located it. Set on Virginia’s largest corn maze (25 acres!), Liberty Mills Farm also has pick your own strawberries and produce. The sign is a nod to Virginia’s agricultural heritage and growing agri-tourism.
I’ll admit that I now understand our state slogan. Virginia is full of rich history, agriculture, emerging environmental efforts and let’s not forget the wineries. I encourage you map out a trip like this. We spent countless hours in the car without staring at screens, actually talking to each other (except for the occasional car nap), and at times it felt like we were driving through a movie set – the towns were so beautiful! It’s one of the best memories I have of time spent with my family and what’s not to LOVE about family time? ❖

hose with the good fortune to hear Dr. David Snyder relate a story or philosophize about life will come away with a sense of his charisma, wisdom, and passion. The animation in his voice and the endless knowledge he eagerly shares is captivating to the listener. Doc, as he is affectionately called, is a man of many words but more importantly, a man of words that matter. “I like selling life,” he says, and we should all buy a piece of what he’s selling. Almost everyone in Fauquier County who has broken a bone in the last four decades likely knows Doc Snyder. One of the co-founders of Blue Ridge Orthopaedic & Spine and an enthusiastic community leader, he also founded the nonprofit organization Verdun Adventure Bound in Rixeyville whose mission is to support and promote youth and adult personal growth through experiential learning and to teach stewardship of the land. His story begins in Pittsburgh where he was born, and then traversed to many other places as part of his adventures of life with a father in the military. His parents always made sure to enroll him in parochial schools because they believed he would receive an education built on faith, good character, and discipline. After graduating from Georgetown University, and then University of Maryland Medical School, Doc enlisted in the Navy. It was here that “I really learned a lot,” he emphasizes, relaying his work of putting arms and legs back together for soldiers who had been injured and would have to live with an amputation otherwise. This time as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon in Vietnam would
34

shape the rest of his career. He even received a Legion of Merit award for removing and disposing of a live grenade from a comrade’s shoulder. Doc could have excelled at so many specialties, like cardiac or neurosurgery, but his desire for a family was foremost in his mind. More years of school and a career that would take up most of his time wasn’t appealing to him. His choice for specialty ultimately came down to a nursery rhyme, he says. “‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King’s horsemen and all the King’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again.’ But I could!” he says with his trademark smile that shows dimples on both sides. Although he built hospice centers, helped people in traumatic situations in Emergency Rooms, and completed residencies at high level hospitals among so many other roles, his contribution to the field of medicine may be most evident in the Warrenton practice he co-founded and ran until his retirement in 2011.

Since 1978 — more than 40 years — Blue Ridge Orthopaedic & Spine Center has been, and continues to be, the place to go for orthopaedic care. He is well known in the community as well, probably due to his unique philosophy of how to run a business. His desire was to create a practice reminiscent of the television series M*A*S*H* — 90 percent work and 10 percent good times. Doc recalls an incident when Blue Ridge Orthopaedic had only been open for two months. A child suffered a near amputation of his leg, with only about two nerves remaining connected. Eight hours later, Doc and his colleagues had repaired and reconnected the leg. These are the types of cases that Doc is inspired by because he can use his trauma training from years past to help those in harrowing situations. “I don’t retire,” says Doc about his after-retirement ventures. Those who know him best know that he is always on the move. “If they say Snyder’s crazy, they are right on target,” he says. Back in 1975 when he moved to Virginia to pursue opening the orthopaedic practice, Snyder purchased a home with 100 acres of farm that hadn’t been worked for about ten years. The idea for using this land for something good was at first simply to reduce the taxes he would have to pay for the land. One day, Snyder decided to ask a friend to teach him how to take care of trees and mentor him as he planted 30,000 trees on the property, creating an arboretum. Ten years later, Snyder began getting calls from groups asking if they could camp on the beautiful property and teachers requesting to bring students to study the trees. It was a lightbulb moment. Snyder realized he could continue to have a positive impact on the lives of children through a completely different avenue. So he began creating Verdun Adventure Bound. As much as we could all benefit from Snyder’s medical knowledge,

his life’s principles should be shared far and wide. Reciting his father’s philosophy “I don’t care what you do as long as you are a man of character,” Snyder explains that the facility created on his property is a place for kids and families to be in nature and to enhance and grow their relationships with others. Snyder’s father believed we first come from our families, then we learn, and then we return to our families. According to him, creating character comes from a three-tiered approach: First, your philosophy — are you a giver or a taker? Second, your values — anything you say about others is about you, not them. And third, your relationships — if you can find someone to share your life with who is loving, kind, and selfless, you’re lucky. “Someone like this is a trophy: put ‘em in the boat,” he says, laughing. Verdun Adventure Bound began small with a few programs but has grown and thrived through the years. The first major building and picnic gazebo was added and then a twostage Shakespeare-inspired theatre. For every program that is added to Verdun’s repertoire, Snyder finds the best expert possible and then steps down and lets him or her run it. “If this were a movie, I would only be the producer,” he says. His daughter Katie says, “My father always wanted all children in our community to be able to experience the Outward Bound Model (founder Kurt Hahn) where they learned self-awareness, selfresilience (grit), group dynamics, and service through outdoor experiential learning. He never wanted financial means to prevent these opportunities for the children.”
At Verdun, every child is recognized, listened to, and valued, which is often contrary to how they feel they are treated in school. Youth and adult retreats, youth groups, sports teams, schools, camping groups, and others can take advantage of all that Verdun has to offer, including over 55 acres of natural habitat. Facilities include The Anne Marie Sheridan Amphitheater for the Performing Arts, the Apiary where bees and honey are produced, The Art & Spirit Barn Studio, campsites, a challenge course, cross country 5k course, Ducks Unlimited Wetland Mitigation Site, Eagles Nest Conference Center, games, a greenhouse, kayaks and canoes, a pavilion, and so much more! Check out the website to see all that Verdun Adventure Bound has to offer the community and families. “It’s a crazy life but it’s a good one,” says Snyder, affectionately relaying that the best part of his life is his wife — an amazing lady — and wonderful children. ❖
A FOUNDERS DAY TRIBUTE will be held in Doc’s honor on July 20 at the Eagle’s Nest Conference Center at Verdun Adventure bound at 17044 Adventure Bound Trail in Rixeyville. Appetizers will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a performance by Elvis impersonator Randoll Rivers at the Amphitheatre from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Please join the celebration for a man who has given so much to the families in this community and beyond.

helsea Tippett and her husband J.B. didn’t grow up farming. But when Chelsea was a little girl, she enjoyed spending time at her maternal grandparents’ Hereford cattle farm in Texas. “I loved being there,” Chelsea recalls with a smile.
“It was honestly my favorite place on earth.” Some of her earliest memories were watching her grandparents work and sweat to keep up with chores at “NanaPoppie Farm,” something they did while also working other jobs five days a week. NanaPoppie Farm is now gone, sold in 2015. But the powerful impression from Chelsea’s time there remained. “I am positive that my experiences on their farm had a hand in my desire to live a similar life,” she said. And in late 2017, with their four kids – Hudson (13), Harrison (7), Hadley (6) and Harlow (3) – the Tippetts closed on a long, narrow, 15-acre slice of land off a peaceful road near Orlean, Virginia, and began to do just that. There was a lot of activity in their new home, which they named “Loud House Farm” after a song in a cartoon the kids love (and no doubt from the general volume in the house). As a lieutenant colonel in the Pennsylvania National Guard and varsity lacrosse coach at Fauquier High School as well as their county’s rec team, J.B. is on the go quite a bit. Health, but a flexible schedule there gives her the opportunity to spend time working outside around the farm. So they began to add the necessary farm things: Animals. Loud House Farm was about to get louder. Chelsea had wanted miniature donkeys since she saw an ad for them in the paper nearly 20 years ago, so as soon as the fence was up they brought in three geldings, Ash, Chinquapin, and Hickory. The minis are strictly pets, but they bring the family much joy. They started with 15 chickens in a coop with a run, but let them free range daily. They recently acquired several black copper maran eggs which hatched last month, so the egg business is growing. The middle children, Harrison and Hadley, help collect, wash and sell the eggs. As members of the Piedmont Farmers 4H Program, their age group is called the Cloverbuds. Chelsea added guinea hens that roost with the chickens and help with tick control. “But they just run around the yard screaming for no apparent reason,” she added. They raised two Berkshire hogs last spring and had them processed in the fall. “Raising pigs was a wonderful experience,” Chelsea said. “Even though with a combined hanging weight of
almost 650 lbs I was sure they were going to eat me before I ate them!” She hopes to get more to raise for meat, and perhaps eventually have their own sow for farrowing in the future. Hudson, the oldest, is a member of the Fauquier County 4H Program in the “Beef & Boer” Club, and takes care of the Loud House Boer goats. At age 13, he is learning great lessons about responsibility, waking up early, and staying up late. “Honestly, having living creatures relying on you for their every need when you’re that age is quite the learning curve,” Chelsea said. “I think all kids should have the opportunity to participate in some sort of agricultural

program while growing up.” In May, Hudson showed two goats at the 4H Show and Sale. He received Champion Junior Novice Goat Showman, First and Third place for the Market Goat division,
and First place in the Pen of 2 category. Both goats sold at the auction, which was very hard for Hudson, but he said he’d do it all over again. “There were tears and lots of frustration,” Chelsea said. “But it was mostly fun and

incredibly enriching.” There are bourbon red turkey poults coming soon. Garden beds are being planted with tomatoes, peppers, squash, radishes, greens, herbs, and flowers. Future plans include a few sheep down the road, and bees. Chelsea’s stepdad keeps bees and has been teaching her the basics. Her paternal grandfather also raised bees and always had his own honey. “Every single time I visited, I’d have a few spoonfuls,” she said. Next year, they will take a beekeeping class and are looking forward to starting their own hives. Apart from chickens, which they raised at a previous home on only a quarter acre, all of this is new to both J.B. and Chelsea. Always an animal lover and natural care taker, Chelsea even worked at a veterinary clinic for several years in high school and college. But neither of them had ever owned donkeys or hogs or bees or goats.

When tackling something new, Chelsea researches what’s required. Whether it’s a chicken coop or a fence system to separate livestock, “I dive in,” she said. “I find what I want and send it to J.B. and we figure out a way to put it together in a way that suits our needs.” It’s in this halfmethodical, halfchaotic way that Chelsea and J.B. have built their farm, and their family. The four kids with ‘H’ names are learning where food comes from and how to work, how to contribute. And they’re making lifelong memories, just like Chelsea did in those formative years visiting her grandparents’ farm in Texas. And speaking of those memories, at the north end of the long driveway a metal sign stands along the road marking the entrance to Loud House Farm. The sign is a gift from Chelsea’s grandparents, Nana and Poppie, who brought it and the post it hangs on 1,300 miles from Texas. The post, still caked at the bottom with dirt from when it was dug up, is the same one that held the sign for NanaPoppie Farm all those years ago. Now that layer of dry Texas caliche is forever mixed with red Virginia clay, a fitting homage to the very roots of this busy, happy, loud house. ❖

WINTER GRAPES FOR SUMMER WINES Cold-resistant grape varietals flourish in Fauquier County and produce some great wines to enjoy in the warm-weather months BY MARK LUNA

ere’s to July, the first month of the second half of the year, when summer is in its blue sky, sun-filled glory. It’s a wonderful time to be outdoors, and if you’re a wine lover, like me, it’s a great time to be making the rounds to all the wonderful wineries that Fauquier County has to offer. From Upperville in the northern part of the county all the way down to Bealeton in the southern reaches, Fauquier County is peppered with an array of (mostly) familyowned wineries where beautiful spaces, mountain views, picnic areas, and friendly tasting rooms make visiting a pure joy. From Fauquier’s grape-friendly terroir with its granite-based soils, these wineries and their winemakers are producing award-

winning wines, from international classics such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, to other varietals that fall into a special category of their own — hybrids and crossing grapes. One of the unique characteristics that I enjoy most about Virginia wines, especially in Fauquier County, is the abundance of white wine varietals that are both hybrid and crossed in design and naturally winter-resistant. I’ve often written about Virginia wines and their unique place in both the domestic and global wine world, and these are two of the reasons why they maintain their footing. The difference between a hybrid grape and a crossed grape is this: a hybrid grape is the offspring between two varietals of different species, and a crossed grape is created between two varietals of the same species. Both types are able to handle very cool, if not downright cold, climates, and are resistant to various diseases that might easily destroy other grapes. So, for this month’s piece, I’ve decided to preview a few of the Fauquier County’s great hybrid and crossed grapes,

and where you might find a bottle for your summer enjoyment. One of Virginia’s most popular white wine grapes is Vidal Blanc, also simply called Vidal. A French hybrid white wine varietal, Vidal Blanc is North America’s most widely planted hybrid and is well represented in Virginia. It is a hybrid of Uni Blanc, the grape of Cognac, and one of the parents of Seyval Blanc. Its slow, steady ripening and thick skin make it especially suitable for late harvest, sweet wines, for which it is used most famously in Canada for the world-renowned Icewine. To experience it locally, you need not travel any further than Mediterranean Cellars in Warrenton, where Vidal Blanc is offered up as both a clean, crisp, dry white wine as well as a semi-sweet, just off-dry appetizer/ dessert wine. Pearmund Cellars in Broad Run also offers up its first bottling of Vidal Blanc, a wonderfully expressive wine, with minerality and citrus on the nose as well as kiwi, peach, and pineapple on the palate and through the long finish. One of the most interesting crossed varietals available is a grape called Traminette. A midto late-season white wine grape, Traminette produces wine with a very pronounced varietal character akin to one of its parents grapes, the Alsatian jewel Gewürztraminer. Like a good ‘Gewurtz’, Traminette is distinguished by its excellent wine quality and good productivity. The name itself is derived from the village of Tramin, in Alto Adige, Italy, where Traminer is the synonym for Gewürztraminer. But you don’t have to go to Italy to get a good Traminette, just head over to Delaplane Cellars and try their 2016 Traminette — it’s a unique wine that is whole cluster pressed (pressed before the grapes are removed from the stems creating a more delicate wine) and barrel fermented. Its experience is textural and fruity, and a great reflection of this very unique white wine. In the mid-20th century, there was a series of about 100 French hybrids developed by hybridizer Bertille Seyve and his partner/father-in-law Victor Villard, much of it planted in

BARREL OAK WINERY MOLON LAVE VINEYARDS

MOLON LAVE VINEYARDS
France. Their most notable achievement in this incredible work is the grape Seyval Blanc, which is not only the single most widely planted vine variety in England, used mostly for blending and sparkling wine production, but also popular in Canada and of course, Virginia. Seyval Blanc makes for a crisp white wine. Barrel Oak Winery has produced several award-winning Seyval Blanc wines and is a very enjoyable place to bring the family, including your dog. Finally, no wine grape journey would be complete without at least one great red wine, and fortunately, the hybrid grape world is well covered there with Chambourcin, a French-American interspecific hybrid. Chambourcin is considered a very productive grape with a deep color and aromatics. It can be made into a dry style or one with a moderate residual sugar level. There are some wonderful Chambourcin wines to choose from in the Fauquier County wine country. Among the producers are Molon Lave Vineyards in Warrenton, whose Chambourcin offering is 100 percent single varietal, aged for 18 months in American oak and is true in style, with earthy and spicy notes, plus a touch of fig and dark fruit on the palate. You can also find a cool Chambourcin Rosé at Blue Valley Vineyard and Winery in Middleburg. This is a unique wine, with candied fruit aromas of pomegranate and red cherry. Served chilled, it’s a great summer wine. Not to be outdone, Philip Carter Winery in Hume offers a great Chambourcin blend called Oatlands. This red wine powerhouse is made with 70 percent Chambourcin and 30 percent Norton, Virginia’s native grape. It’s a full, fruit-forward wine with dark berry fruit, earthy notes, and firm tannins. Aged in both neutral and Virginia new oak barrels, Oatlands is both elegant and strong, very reflective of Chambourcin’s grace and Norton’s power. So yes, hit the road this July and make your way around Fauquier County, visiting one great winery after another. And when you visit these places, and meet the individuals who make them what they are, ask about their hybrid grapes, open a bottle, and enjoy the whole experience. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖
