ell, March is finally here, and, as of right now, we have hardly had any snow. Which is fine with me! So even though it might still be cold, it’s time to start looking forward to longer days, more sun, and eventually, warmer weather. And flowers. They will be coming up soon, some may have already bloomed. The beauty of a garden filled with flowers and vegetables is something to be looked forward to, and some people, through hard work and perseverance, enjoy their own beautiful gardens during the spring and summer months. Unlike myself, who has to enjoy other people’s gardens as I avoid looking at the encroaching weeds in my own yard. Gardens are for people to enjoy, but they also serve another purpose: serving as a habitat for small wildlife. You may not want squirrels in your garden, but they are there, so might as well work with them! Jennifer Bowman of Catlett has embraced that concept. Her yard is certified as a wildlife habitat through the National Wildlife Federation. This is not very difficult to do, but doing so reminds her that she’s not alone in the garden. It makes her mindful of other creatures who make the garden their home as she designs her landscape and decides what to plant where. Last summer, Mollie Thorsen of Little Burros reached out to me about the possibility of an article about a gardening tool that her father had created. I thought, what a great article for one of the spring magazines, a garden theme. But this story is not what I thought it would be. Yes, the family invented a garden caddy, but the story doesn’t have much to do with gardening. It is the story of their family, and it is a moving one. It is the story of a family who is overcoming loss and is healing by reaching out to a special cause. Enjoy the issue and the coming spring!

SYLVIA McDEVITT BY PAM KAMPHUIS BY EDEN PHOTOGRAPHY

ylvia McDevitt’s first attempt at retirement 3 years ago didn’t work out. “I missed the people,” Sylvia said. Now the Membership Director at the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce, she is back in her element: meeting people, making connections, and helping local businesses. Sylvia McDevitt thrives on relationships. Her family — her husband Jay, four children, 10 grandchildren — comes first, of course, but close behind are her friends and the people she has developed connections with through her career and active volunteer work.

Sylvia started her career with a decade of insurance sales, then moved to advertising sales and spent five years at the Chronicle of the Horse in Middleburg. Her longest run, of course, was at the Fauquier Times, where she really became immersed in the community. She was also a founding partner for 3 Thrifty Chicks, an event and catering company which operated for six years. Advertising sales takes a special kind of person: the industry is fast paced, deadline driven, number driven, and competitive. Sylvia thrived. “I loved it,” she said. After 17 years, though, she felt it was time to retire. “I spent the summer with my grandchildren, doing a little bit of this, a little bit of that, going to the pool. But I realized that I missed people, the people I had come to know as friends and business connections I had met through the Chamber here in Fauquier.” She realized that, for her, it was too early for retirement. Offered a job at the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce, Sylvia, who has always had a special place in her heart for the organization, eagerly accepted and now works full time as membership director. “I love it just as much as I loved advertising sales,” she said. “It’s so rewarding. I think the connections I’ve made through the Chamber are lifelong, and I’ve found many of my friends here. But loyalty to their businesses is also a factor. If I need a business service, I’m going to go to someone in the Chamber. And that’s how it is with most of our members, there’s a lot of loyalty.” Volunteering has always been a big part of Sylvia’s life, and she has to be careful to maintain life balance. Past positions have been as a chairperson for the Salvation Army and a former president of the American Cancer Society when Fauquier had a chapter. Currently, she is President of the Piedmont Dispute Resolution Center, and is also forming a team for Fauquier Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build. Sylvia loves spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and entertaining. When work and volunteering impede the quality of those things, she knows she’s doing too much. “I’ve always liked to volunteer and sometimes I just have to figure out how to say “no”. That’s not an easy thing for me to do because there’s value in everything that comes my way, and I want to take a part in it. But if I don’t have time for the important things in my life, I realize I’m probably pushing too hard.”

McDevitt with her family at Jellystone Park (top), and with her grandaughter Laila (below).

Sylvia and Jay have been married for 26 years, and raised their blended family of four children together at their home in Catlett. These four children and their families all live close by, which, Sylvia said, “is a blessing.” The ten grandchildren, who range in age from newborn to 18, are now a big focus in Sylvia’s life. “We’ve had so much fun growing this family,” she said. During the spring and summer, Sylvia spends 12-14 hours a week in her gardens, which feature mostly flowers and herbs with some occasional vegetables thrown in. Having picked up her love of gardening from her aunt, Sylvia’s plans this summer are to pass along that love to her grandchildren. This might be challenging, considering the number of children and the age range, but Sylvia intends to persevere. She’s not sure the older boys, 13 and 16, will have much of an interest, but she has her sights set on the younger ones. Four of them are about the same age — eight years old — which will enable her to teach them as a group. “The three-year-old will be fun also, she’s likely to be enchanted by planting a seed and then seeing it sprout and grow,” she said. ❖

a business seminar, update their driver’s license, or research their family tree,” said Lawrie Parker, Chairman, Fauquier Public Library Board of Trustees. “We see examples of how Fauquier libraries change lives every day.” It seems many Fauquier County residents know about the wealth of opportunities at their local library — over half of county residents have a library card and nearly 700 people visit one of the library’s locations each day. Those who haven’t visited the local library recently are invited to come by and discover the opportunities that await. Here are just a few of the opportunities to explore.

ACE THE TEST

Pam Lovera, reference librarian, assisting patron Renee Younes with Kindle

From in-person tutoring to online tools, the library can help you tackle even the toughest assignments thrown your way. Turn to powerful online tools like Bloom’s Literature, Access Science, and Opposing Viewpoints in Context to solve virtually any homework assignment. Learning doesn’t stop when high school ends. Prepare for the PSAT, SAT, or ACT or find out how to increase your chances to win scholarships using the Testing & Education Reference Center or Method Test Prep. Consider exploring vocational careers and building skills to land a good job.

NEVER STOP LEARNING

ast year, Americans made more trips to their local library than to movie theaters. In fact, they made more visits to libraries than to zoos, amusement parks, casinos, and museums combined, according to a recent Gallup poll. “Despite the proliferation of digitalbased activities over the past two decades — including digital books, podcasts, streaming entertainment services, and advanced gaming — libraries have endured as a place Americans visit nearly monthly,” concludes Gallup. “People come to the library for so many reasons — to read to therapy dogs, attend

Want to learn another language? Rocket Language can help with that. Interested in trying your hand at baking? Great Courses to the rescue. Or turn to Universal Class to learn yoga. Libraries put self-paced learning at your fingertips. Whatever your interest, hundreds of courses are available to choose from.

UNCROSS YOUR WIRES

Technology not your thing? No problem! Our whip smart librarians can help with that. “I heard about getting ebooks free through the library. My Kindle was an older model, and I couldn’t figure it out. I took it to the library, and the staff showed me how to download a book,” said Renee Younes, a frequent library patron. Now she has over 23,000 free ebooks, audio-books, and e-magazines at her fingertips.

WORK SMARTER

In today’s competitive environment, entrepreneurs and busy professionals need to work smarter, not harder. Try ReferenceUSA for lead generation to reach more customers, at no cost. “Using ReferenceUSA for lead generation can save a business thousands of dollars a month. I couldn’t afford to contact the number of leads each day that I get from ReferenceUSA,” said Mike Baumstark, a local businessman. Just starting out? Budding entrepreneurs will find Gale Business | Plan Builder to help them start, manage and optimize their business. Then, when your business is up and running, Gale Business |Entrepreneurship has the tools to help with marketing, accounting, human resources, and even taxes.

The Washington DC metro area has one of the worst commutes in the country. Fortunately, more and more workers are able to telecommute and avoid the hours spent in a car. But telecommuting depends on having the space to work and reliable internet. A Fauquier Public Library branch can

provide many of the tools a telecommuter needs — computers, Wi-Fi, hotspots, even workspaces.

FAUQUIER PUBLIC LIBRARY LOCATIONS:

Fauquier residents use their mobile phones at work, at home, while walking their dog, or waiting for the light to change. Ninety percent of that time is spent on apps. Now there is a mobile app to help library users access the library, wherever, whenever. It can be used to browse the library’s catalog, place holds, download free e-materials, learn about library programs, or even follow the library on social media. “Our patrons expect to access library services from their phones — we are now able to provide them with an optimal experience. The app can even be used in place of a library card to check out materials,” said Alison Pruntel, the library’s Manager of Technology and Materials.

Liberty High School’s theme this year is “Summer Camp”. Entertainment will include a movie, fire pit complete with smores, a field day of games and events in the gymnasium, and the always popular photo booth. Their event will overlap the ending of the prom which will take place at Lord Fairfax Community College on April 25 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Students can begin arriving for after-prom at 11:30 and will stay until 4 a.m., when they can enjoy a breakfast prepared by volunteers. Inflatable games, including a mechanical bull, will highlight the entertainment. Students will also be able to try out a hamster ball or obstacle course, play casino night or bingo, or join a pick-up basketball game. Food and drink will be supplied by Pepsi, Wegmans grocery, Carousel, several pizza restaurants, and Nathan’s, a new restaurant arriving at Vint Hill. Fauquier High School uniquely has scheduled its prom for April 18 and its After-Prom from midnight to 4 a.m immediately afterward. It also gives some students the option of attending more than one prom if they have a date from a different school. Nancy Griffin-Bonnaire, who chairs Fauquier’s After-Prom, was eager to highlight Shady Oaks Amusement, located in Catlett, for its role in providing much of the entertainment for its “Old Hollywood” themed event. Griffin-Bonnaire mentioned that her committee is renting Shady Oaks’ inflatables, including Hippo Chow Down, Human Whack-aMole and, of course, the popular Bull-Riding game. Local DJ Michael Harmon will keep the music going throughout the party. ❖

ou might say gardens are for healthy exercise and visual enjoyment, so what need would a gardener have for technology? Well, for starters, it can help you enjoy and share your garden. My wife and my 85-year-old mother-in-law love to take photos of their gorgeous flowers in all phases, especially when they’re in full bloom. With the latest iPhones, within minutes I can email my best shots to someone, share them on Facebook, or order prints through Google photos or my drugstore. A few years ago, I treated myself to a “stealth cam.” You can hang these rugged boxes around a tree or on an outbuilding. It has a digital camera inside and allows you to take timed photos at set intervals and view them as a short video on your computer. This could be interesting, for instance, in making a video of a flower growing from seed to full blossom. It’s also interesting for capturing wildlife with a built-in motion sensor. In this way I’ve “captured” numerous deer, our neighborhood fox, occasional raccoons, possums, and bunnies (but no bear, yet). Our summers are often very dry, so you need to water new plantings and more delicate plants often. When she had a row of Green Giant Arborvitae planted, my mother-in-law had also installed a soaking hose along the hedgerow. Then she added a timer between the hose and faucet that turns the water on for a few hours each day. A great device for a gardener! But technology can help even further. Gardeners could consider a Remote Monitoring Weather Station. Once mounted outside, it transfers all kinds of weather-related information to a small monitor in your house or on your cell phone. It can measure temperature (inside and outside), humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, and rain. Now imagine combining this technology with your watering system! While measuring your local rainfall, the water flow and timing could be adjusted and controlled without you having to do anything. Very useful during a drought!

While searching for a few presents for my gardeners, I found some products like Edyn, a Wi-Fi Garden Sensor that analyzes your ground, and tracks light, humidity, temperature, soil nutrition, and moisture. You can get tailored tips and notifications based on your garden’s state and the weather forecast. Edyn Wi-Fi It even tells you which Garden plants best match the Sensor soil, sunlight, and climate conditions of your area. The product was created and successfully crowdfunded via Kickstarter in 2016. (2336 backers pledged $384,000!) I recommend checking out some of these crowdfunding websites like www.kickstarter.com or www.gofundme.com. You might find an interesting new product and can be the first to try it out. A wide variety of gardening programs and apps are growing rapidly in number. They can help you with designing landscaping projects, advising you where to grow what, types of materials, layout, and costs for hardscaping such as a stone patio, and so on. You can see how it will look and make adjustments before you start. If you find a plant or flower in your yard that you can’t recognize, use an app like PictureThis, a plant identifier that uses the camera in your phone to demystify unknowns for you. PlantSnap is another good identification aid. Some apps focus on bird identification. My wife enjoys contributing to birdwatching data through Cornell Lab’s free EBird and uses their Merlin app to identify birds by photo, sound, wingspan, and other characteristics. BirdGenie is another recommended app. Spring is almost here! Enjoy the outside and feel free to update me on your experience with technology aids for gardening. ❖

A BEER FOR EVERY TASTE A LTERED SUDS BREW PUB STORY BY GARY CARROLL | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

I

f you enjoy trying uniquely crafted, freshly brewed, flavorful beer while relaxing in a real beer cellar, you need go no farther than to Altered Suds, Warrenton’s new brewpub located below Molly’s Irish Pub in Old Town Warrenton. The goal of owners Corey Ross, Jay Bergantim, and Casey Ward is to create “a chill environment where people can just sit and enjoy their beer.” For brewmasters Corey and Jay, the focus is on the quality of the beers they brew. All the beer is brewed on premises, with about 8-10 different varieties on tap at any one time. The large, high-ceilinged open space contains a long bar stocked with beer to suit almost any taste, and many tables to sit and socialize. There is a large screen tv on one wall, but it doesn’t overpower the space either visually or sound-wise. Also noteworthy are the four large vats for fermenting, which give the brewpub an authentic atmosphere. While most people see the sign and enter

from the Main Street entrance near Molly’s, there is a second, more accessible entrance on South Second Street that doesn’t involve stairs. During my recent visit, Corey offered me a seat at the bar and, not surprisingly, asked me what I would like to drink from his selection of craft beers. When I mentioned that I was personally not much of a beer man, he suggested that I might be surprised to find some of his beers would suit my taste, including some light, low calorie, gluten-free brews. Skimming his list, I selected one that fit that description, called Altered Ginger Beer, which I found quite tasty and refreshing. “That’s the idea,” said Casey. “We want to have something for everyone.” Even though Corey and Jay prefer drinking and brewing hoppy style beer themselves, the goal is to have a selection of dark beers, light beers, Belgian beers, Gose, and IPAs. “We’re both beer connoisseurs, we enjoy and respect every style of beer,

Owner Corey Ross

All of Altered Suds’ beer is brewed on premises

and we stay close to style when we are brewing.” The beer menu is constantly changing and evolving, with one or two beers released every week. “Right now, since we’re on a small system, we’ve been doing a lot of ales, because they only take about two and a half weeks to brew. But soon we’ll start doing lagers and other styles.” Currently, their flagship beer is Stuck in Half Life, a light grolsch. Their number one IPA is a heavy duty beer named Late to the Party. Also selling well is Assemblage Point, another IPA. “IPAs are huge right now,” Corey said. As you can tell, almost as much creativity goes into

naming the beers as into brewing them. “Jay and I come up with the names, we just have fun with it — that’s one of our favorite parts.” Other names for their creations include Wizard Elixir, Dipped in Moonlight, Just Drink the Damn Thing, and Safe When Taken as Directed. I had to ask, how did the owners decide on the name Altered Suds? It seems the owners chose to draw the name from a law called the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516, which dictated that only water, barley, and hops were to be used to brew beer (yeast was added to the list centuries later). So, if a brewer was to use other ingredients, they would be creating an “altered” beer, hence the name “Altered Suds.” Corey, who grew up in Fauquier, told me that starting his own brewery had been a long-time dream. He started home brewing when he was only 21 and studied brewing via the Siebel Institute of Technology located in Chicago. After working at another local brewery, Corey met co-owner Jay at the Barrel Oak Tap Room, where they recognized they had similar goals, and decided to go into business together. Jay had come from Massachusetts, where he had been at a brewery in Martha’s Vineyard, the popular resort area previously frequented by the Kennedy family. While visiting Molly’s Pub together, Molly’s owner Casey mentioned to them there was a large vacant cellar available just below that might be of interest. It had not been used for many years, although previously it had housed a frame shop. Years ago, the space reportedly had been used as a funeral home. Visiting the cellar, they discovered it was completely empty and would require considerable time and effort to refurbish before they could start their business there, but otherwise it was perfect! The two young entrepreneurs dived into their project and were able to open just four months ago, On September 12. In the time they have been there, no paranormal activity has been detected, despite the building’s former purpose. As with most wineries and breweries, guests are welcome to bring their own food and snacks, but Altered Suds also offers a limited menu from Molly’s which includes light snacks, sandwiches, and fish and chips. Altered Suds is located at 36 Main Street and is open every day of the week. Mon-Tues, 3 to 9 pm; Wed-Thurs, 3 to 10 pm; Friday 3 to 11 pm; Sat noon to 11 pm and Sun noon to 8 pm. ❖ ALTEREDSUDSBEER.COM

25 varieties of birds in just our small garden, more than I’ve seen anywhere else, and I’m only now starting to learn about the variety of insects. I really love to garden, and I feel like the birds give it a lively, animated feel.” Last year, Bowman saw an ad on Facebook about certified wildlife habitats from the National Wildlife Federation. She thought, “Well, I pretty much do all that anyway,” and decided to investigate further. At 1/3 of an acre in rural Catlett, Bowman’s garden is small, but that’s no impediment to certification which, she explained, is not very complicated or especially difficult. And it’s very rewarding. For certification, there are five factors to be addressed: the yard needs to provide cover for shelter, food sources, water, a place for wildlife to raise young, and sustainable, eco-friendly gardening practices to make it a healthy place for animals, birds, and insects. Bowman’s style of gardening is best described as “an English cottage garden with a Virginia overlay.” Committed to using native Virginia plants, she has had

26

to forego some of her favorites, such as the red poppy, native to England, and the golden poppy, which is also not native to Virginia and therefore not attractive to our local birds or insects. Using a combination of perennial and annual varieties, she creates a stunning garden for people and for birds every year. “I use the perennials to provide the bones and structure, and fill in with annuals for more color. Especially when I first started the garden, when the perennials weren’t mature yet, I used a lot of annuals for variety.” It was tough, slow going at first. When she and her husband first moved to their Catlett property, the yard was overgrown and filled with junk. Cleaning it up was a big job, and then she turned her attention to the creation of the garden. After a lot of clearing, Bowman noticed a natural path through a wooded section, so she created a natural woodland area. “You have to walk around your yard and get the feel of it, to find out what it wants to do.” she said. Bowman sees all sorts of small wildlife in her yard: squirrels, chipmunks, hummingbirds, butterflies, insects, and bees. “We must get five or six different kinds of bees,” she said. But really, it’s more for the birds in Bowman’s garden. Providing two birdbaths for a source of water, she also puts out six bird feeders, especially in the winter when food sources are limited. She uses a variety of seeds, attracting all different kinds of birds. “Be consistent,” she advised. “Birds have really good

Jennifer’s Tips Regarding which plants for which wildlife, this is what I’ve found works. But someone up the road may find other things work better. There’s a LOT of hit and miss with gardening and you have to be prepared to fail. Often.

What to plant: Bees: sunflowers, lavender, bee balm Hummingbirds: zinnias, petunia, basil, coleus Goldfinches: zinnias Wrens: lots of undergrowth and old leaves, they love rooting around for bugs

Birdseed to use: Thistle: for the finches, mainly Black oil sunflower seed: cardinals, sparrows, finches, nuthatches Suet cakes, Suet bits Spreadable suet called Bark Butter which Wild Birds Unlimited sells. I spread this on tree bark and the woodpeckers love it! Seed and dried fruit cylinders: titmouse, yellow-breasted chat, cardinals, woodpeckers, sparrows, finches Hummingbird feeder with homemade nectar

28

{ MARCH 2020 |

memories, and they’ll keep coming back to your feeders if you serve what they like.” And, she adds, “There’s always a chance that you’ll attract a bird that missed his migration. It happens sometimes. One winter we had a Yellow Breasted Chat. He was supposed to have migrated to Central America for the winter, but somehow he didn’t. He was the cutest thing ever. He found a good food source in my garden, and he stayed. We saw him twice a day, at least.” Bowman recommends Zinnias for hummingbirds and goldfinches, and one of her new additions in her Fauquier garden is the Mahonia Holly Shrub, she said. “It was new to me, but I didn’t see an Eastern Bluebird until I planted it. One year we had so many bluebirds it looked like a Disney cartoon.” Viburnums, holly shrubs, and black chokeberry bushes are particularly good for birds, also. The importance of insects can’t be ignored, Bowman explains, even if they’re a pest to humans, like mosquitoes. “You have to have plants that attract insects, because that’s what the birds feed on.” A wildlife habitat is really its own ecosystem. Does she have a problem with wildlife eating her flowers? After all, the beauty of the garden is for people to enjoy as well as wildlife. “It happens,” she said. “After all, they’re only doing what they are programmed to do. You can’t fault them for that. If I have something that I don’t want them to eat, I make sure to put it up higher where they can’t get it, and then make sure to plant other things that they can eat where they can reach them. Otherwise it’s not fair to them.” One of the features of a wildlife habitat is the absence of chemicals, such as fertilizers, weed killers, and pesticides. Does this make maintaining the garden more difficult? “Not really,” Bowman said. “When we first moved here and the property was such a mess, I did use some weed killer. Virginia is like a jungle in the summertime, it’s almost impossible to kill things. But now that the garden’s established, I take care of it without chemicals.” Bowman creates and maintains the garden herself, spending at least 20 hours a week there in the spring and summer. “My husband loves to enjoy the garden, but he doesn’t enjoy the gardening itself. He mows the lawn and does any heavy lifting needed. But I get a lot of joy from the garden, as well as the process of creating it. It’s very therapeutic, and it’s very healing. It’s such a blessing.” What has changed for Bowman since the decision to create a wildlife habitat? “I’m more mindful of what I do with the garden. What’s going to benefit the birds and wildlife is foremost in my mind. It’s a gentle reminder of who’s in the garden besides me.” ❖

Welcoming Spring! Warrenton designer Amy Boyle shares her Easter tablescapes that brighten the house after a long winter STORY AND PHOTOS BY AMY BOYLE

A

side from the religious significance, my favorite part about Easter is that it heralds the coming of Spring. At this time of year, turning to lighter and brighter home decor with the use of pastels, fresh flowers, and the requisite dyed eggs are the basic elements for creating an Easter table. From traditional to fun, Easter colors and themes can vary according to the imagination. In our home I like to blend formal with fun, using dishes and decor to keep our Easter table feeling fresh and new. I add in spring flowers, bunnies and other seasonal touches for a table that can work for both formal and less formal celebrations. Here is a look back at some of the color combinations and styles I have created for Easter over the years.

A fancy placemat with your everyday china can be appropriate for Easter, the extra thought of a sweet little nest signifies the beginning of spring.

Snider Healthy Water Means A Healthy Home.

ask

Dr. Harris...

q. a.

I’ve neglected my mouth for years and I am scared to death of the dentist. How can you help me? We develop a rapport with our patients. Once you get to know us, your anxiety will diminish. We have medication, nitrous oxide, and administer painless injections. We are very sensitive to your feelings. We want you to be comfortable. If you need a lot of dental work, we can do one tooth at a time, or your whole mouth in as little as 1 to 2 visits. We tailor our treatment to your needs.

Does your home’s water smell like a swimming pool? While chlorine does a great job of eliminating most pathogens from the water we drink, this powerful chemical has a downside when it comes to drinking it (and let’s not get started with the unappetizing smell). Luckily, we have a water treatment solution that’s right for you. Call us today for your free water test and to learn more about having the healthiest water for your family!

Strength in Family The Thorsen family, the Little Burro, and healing through giving back BY PAM KAMPHUIS

I

t all started in the garden. Sudie Thorsen had always been an avid gardener, and when the young family moved to 5 acres outside of Warrenton in 1999, she really got the chance to spread out and expand her garden. “As a family,” her daughter Mollie said, “we’ve always loved the outside, and we’ve always had an inherent love for flowers, and the gardening has been something that’s always been super significant to us.” Sudie was the driving force and did the design and landscaping and chose the flowers and plants, and her husband Bob became her “Little Burro,” he laughed, digging the holes and planting whatever she told him to plant wherever she told him to plant it. “My wife has always loved to work in the garden, and I love to hang out with my wife. I like being where she is, and she likes being in the yard.” But working in the gardens, as all gardeners know, requires a lot of equipment. “She always wanted her iced tea, her bottled water, her cell phone, the house phone, her gardening gloves, and all the little and big tools she needed. She’d always leave them all over the yard, and I’d be sent to go get them. I was always running around to get all her stuff. If we put everything in a wheelbarrow, it would all fall over and fall out,” Bob recalled. Then, a lightbulb went off in his head. The back portion of the wheelbarrow is often underused. What if there were some sort of holder or caddy there to contain the many necessary implements? Bob built a prototype out of cardboard and duct tape, and took it into the office of the family business, Thorsen Construction. The whole family — Bob, his daughter Becca, and his three sons, Robert, John, and James — worked there, and Mollie, the youngest, had just graduated from college and was starting to feel her way out into the world.

36

{ MARCH 2020 |

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

}

They all loved the idea, and decided to move forward with producing it. Mollie, Robert, and Bob took charge of the idea, with Becca acting as CFO, as she did for Thorsen Construction. They named the product the Little Burro because burros are known to be humble, hard working, and strong. One thing they all felt very strongly about, even though it did affect the price point of the product, was having everything — from the product itself down to the boxes and printing — manufactured in this country. One reason, as Bob put it, was the complicated logistics of doing business overseas. But the main reason had to do with Becca. A dedicated philanthropist, Becca had always felt strongly about human trafficking. By manufacturing in another country, they couldn’t be sure of the labor laws and therefore couldn’t be sure whether labor trafficking occurred in the factories overseas. What followed was a long process of bringing the idea to market: architectural renderings, many revisions, sourcing materials, finding a company to make a mold and build a prototype, applying for patents, designing a brand, deciding on colors, fabricating the boxes, attending trade shows with the prototype — truly a time consuming and expensive process.

RIGHT: Mollie and Bob Thorsen with their second product, the Burro Buddy, a smaller version of the original Little Burro (pictured above). Retailers for their products include Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, Duluth Trading, and Walmart.

FAR LEFT: Bob with the prototype of the Little Burro which he created out of cardboard and duct tape. LEFT: Mollie, Bob, and Becca at a trade show. BELOW: Becca on the day they sold the Little Burro to Walmart.

Was it worth it? Bob said, "I’ll put it this way: I consulted a very knowledgeable businessman I know, and he said, ‘Bob, it’s going to take longer than you would think, and it’s going to cost more than you would think.’ If I’d known how long it was going to take and how much it was going to cost, I probably would have given it a second thought. But now I’m glad we did it, I wouldn’t trade it for anything, because Mollie has just grown into such an incredible businesswoman. It’s been an invaluable experience for her. Even if we never sold another piece, it’s been worth it for our family.” Becca, as well, loved the product and thrived in the fast-paced business world they found themselves in as they navigated trade shows and marketed their invention to bring it to retail. Before it even hit the market, the Little Burro made a big splash and received a lot of press, even winning the best new product distinction — ahead of 11,000 other products — at the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas in 2014. A highlight and breakthrough came during the summer of 2016 when Mollie and Becca attended Walmart’s “Made in America” buying day. They sold the Little Burro to a vice president of Walmart, who was very impressed with both Mollie and Becca as well as the product. “Becca was just over the moon that day,” Bob recalled. “She saw all these women in positions of authority, and it really gave her ideas for possibilities for her own future. That day opened her eyes so much. It was the best day she ever had as a businesswoman.”

38

{ MARCH 2020 |

But then, tragedy struck out of nowhere. In October 2016, Becca passed away after a short illness. The family was paralyzed with grief, and both businesses suffered. Mollie said, “It was heartbreaking, it still is heartbreaking. She was really the glue that held us together, both as a family and as a business. It was especially difficult because both Thorsen Construction and Little Burro were both family run, and just the idea of going to work and going past an empty office was just not something any of us could face.” The paperwork for the new opportunity at Walmart faltered in the aftermath of Becca’s loss. “It took a long time to recover as a family and a business. We just had to take a break. We could hardly put one step in front of the other. We weren’t even sure we wanted to go on.” Bob recalled. Mollie said, “We definitely dragged our feet, but after a year or so we arrived at a point that we realized we needed to make a decision.

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

}

We either needed to end it now, or decide that we were 100 percent committed and move on with it. At that point, we decided that we were going to continue to move fully forward with the company because Becca loved it so much. We decided to take Becca’s 10 percent share in the company and donate it to her favorite charity, and turn Becca’s legacy into something positive and use this to build something in her honor. We’ve been able to do that. For me that was the driving force.” Becca was most active in A21, a global anti human trafficking organization that raises awareness and provides rescue, after care, medical, and legal services to victims. Its acronym refers to their goal of abolishing human trafficking in the 21st century. “It’s just an amazing organization,” Mollie said. The family has taken up Becca’s mission, and actively participates in the organization, both by volunteering and by financial contributions from both Thorsen Construction and Little Burros.

“We decided to take Becca’s 10 percent share in the company and donate it to her favorite charity, and turn Becca’s legacy into something positive and use this to build something in her honor.” “Being involved in the A21 organization has been really therapeutic for us,” said Mollie. “It’s been such a blessing in all our lives, helping us heal. We’re doing this for Becca, but we are also helping others to possibly avoid a traumatic situation. It’s really a full circle.” Little Burros today Resisting continuing pressure from retailers to move operations overseas to decrease the manufacturing costs for the product, the Thorsens developed a new, smaller version of the Little Burro, called the Burro Buddy, with a lower price point. Both products are still on the market, with portions of sales going to A21. Their retailers include Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, Duluth Trading, and yes, Walmart. ❖

STEPPING BACK IN TIME Warrenton’s “Mecca” has been faithfully restored to its mid-nineteenth-century splendor STORY BY GARY CARROLL | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

A

pproaching Mecca, the elegant nineteenth-century Italianate mansion on Culpeper Street, I could easily imagine I would be met at the top of the stairs leading to the broad, arcade-fronted porch by a hostess in charming antebellum attire or by a Civil War army officer using the house as his headquarters. Over 150 years ago, either imagined host could have received me. But today, Ken Alm who, with his wife Sandy, currently owns Mecca, welcomed me into his home and quickly pointed out that they see themselves as “stewards” of this impressive 7500-square-foot mansion, remarking they “just don’t build homes like this anymore.” Indeed, this is true. I was struck immediately by the 15-foot high ceilings bordered by crown molding above an open, expansive living area with beautiful pinewood flooring throughout. Ken confessed that the high ceiling was the most important feature that attracted him to the house; it seems he always wanted to have a very tall Christmas tree in his home, and now he can. Sandy very much wanted a house with fireplaces, and Mecca has a more than adequate number — nine of them, all made of marble. Off to the right side of the large inviting foyer is the library, where one wall contains well-stocked bookshelves from the floor to the edge of the molding bordering the high ceiling. There, Alm shared with me his passion for renovating the house while preserving its original charm and allure. Although it had strong foundations, including 16-inch thick brick walls, it had not been well maintained before he purchased it in 2001. He eagerly took on the task of stabilizing the house while carrying out his self-imposed responsibility to preserve the

interior of his home’s appearance as close to its original design and décor as possible. After 14 years, he says, he has almost achieved his goal. Across from the library, I was ushered into the living room, containing period furniture and two large eye-catching mirrors, a French one over the marble fireplace and another stretching nearly from the floor to the ceiling. There was plenty of open area, and a small sunlit enclave surrounded by windows caught my attention; it contained a desk and chair suitable for doing paperwork or, perhaps, just daydreaming. Ken’s dedication to this task comes through clearly as one walks across those pinewood floors through the large rooms and hallways and up the winding staircase to the numerous bedrooms. Along the way, Ken pointed out the four bathrooms and a powder room that he has brought up to modern standards. I learn that the house originally had a large water tank in the attic and pipes that carried the water to marble basins and water closets — a rare feature for the antebellum period when the house was built, and affordable only to the wealthiest. Back on the ground floor, I followed Ken down interior stone stairs to the cellar, where I felt like I was entering the catacombs and almost expected to find tombs on either side of the narrow passageway cut out of solid rock. This space was added long after the house was first built when the occupants needed space for a modern furnace. The Alms have transformed part of this space into a well-stocked and ideally located wine cellar. John Spilman, who also built the house on Falmouth Street once owned by Colonel John Mosby, built this one in 1859

for Rice Payne, a prominent local attorney and one of the wealthiest citizens in Warrenton. Payne called the house “Mecca,” apparently a nickname for his wife America Semmes, of the prominent Semmes family of Maryland. Spilman seems to have had an almost unlimited budget and paid great attention to detail in constructing the impressive three-story, stucco mansion. He included thick brick exterior walls, semi-circular window hoods, polygonal bays, a gable roof, bracketed eaves, and that inviting arcaded porch and dentil cornice. Behind the house, he built a brick kitchen/ servants’ quarters, a smoke house, and a carriage house. The old kitchen building is now rented out as an apartment, and the carriage house has become a workshop. During the Civil War, which closely followed completion of the house, it was used as a hospital by both armies and was occupied by several Union generals, including Gen. Edwin Sumner who used it as his headquarters, turning the parlor into a military map room and installing a telegraph system directly connected to Union military headquarters in Washington, D.C. Family members were confined to the upper floors of the building, as Federal troops used the first floor. Mrs. Payne and her sister nursed wounded troops from both armies. Unhappily, America Payne died in 1862, a week after the birth of her eighth child, possibly from illness contracted while nursing the soldiers. Mecca stayed in the Payne family for many years before changing hands and today looks — and feels, I’m certain — very much like it did over 150 years. It is generally regarded as one of the most architecturally significant houses in Warrenton and is cited in The National Register of Historic Places. ❖

graphic designer. A Fauquier native, her roots here are deep: her mother’s family has been in the county since the early 1800s. Ashleigh was influenced heavily by Sherrie and her grandmother, Eva Walker, while she was growing up. “My mom could do anything she wanted,” Ashleigh explained. “I watched her put up drywall in our basement, build birdhouses she'd sell in craft shows, make figurines out of clay, and more. She was an incredible role model. She introduced me to arts and crafts, and I would help her paint. She even let me paint a mural on my bedroom wall. She always encouraged my creativity.” When Ashleigh graduated from Liberty High School, she knew where she wanted to go. Sherrie always told her she could do anything, and if she wanted to pursue art, she should go for it. Ashleigh also had an art teacher at Liberty, Gary Colson, who also encouraged her. “He felt that I should go ahead and pursue art in college, he told me I was good enough, and that kind of helped me. I really needed that validation,” Ashleigh said. Ashleigh headed off to VCU, widely known for its arts program. “I absolutely loved growing up in Fauquier, but I was ready for

t should come as no surprise to our community that Sherrie Carter’s daughter is following in her mother’s creative footsteps, although with a modern twist. Sherrie, of course, is well known for the distinctive Americana look of her creations featured in her shop Sherrie’s Stuff. While her daughter loves the same hands-on, traditional art, she’s also moved into creating digitally as well. Ashleigh Corrin is a talented, professional artist, illustrator, and

something new,” she said. “I was ready to move to a city, I was ready for a different energy and more diversity. VCU allowed me to really embrace who I was as a creative. I met so many different types of people from various backgrounds. It was exactly the life experience I felt I needed.” Ashleigh studied Communication Arts, a big part of which was illustration. She was able to expand on and explore mediums that she had always liked (painting, collaging, linoleum printing, and drawing) as well as those she wasn’t as familiar with.“The program and teachers were fantastic. They made a true effort to expose us to different mediums to help us discover our interests.” It was at VCU that she was introduced to digital illustration. She was enchanted with the concept, and realized the enormity of what could be created digitally. Using mostly Photoshop, she learned the mindblowing number of tools and brushes that could be used to create layers and texture, so similar to her hands-on creativity. “You can take it as far as you want, and do all sorts of projects. My mom’s influence still stayed with me, and I found a way to blend the two and make that work for me.” By my junior year of college I

realized that I wanted to create art with a positive theme. I wanted whatever I did to have purpose, and I always had a desire to include messages of encouragement, especially for young people. Ashleigh’s style is far from traditional. “I love using lines and movement to bring energy to a piece. I enjoy incorporating childlike silliness here and there that I think we all can connect to,” she explained. Ashleigh exhibited her work online on different artist directories, including a site called womenwhodraw.com. It was there that in 2017 that her work caught

publisher based in Brooklyn, New York. Bedrick connected her with children’s author Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie who was working on a book for children called Layla’s Happiness. “When I saw Ashleigh's work, the draw was immediate. There is a wonderful energy in her work, there is a clarity and a freshness there. It was obvious to me that Ashleigh had the talent and the sensitivity to bring Layla to the page in a way that would render the love, joy, and community that nourishes her visible,” said Ekere. Layla’s Happiness was published in 2019, and has earned a 5-star rating on Amazon. The story, geared for ages 4-8, is a whimsical portrayal of what makes a little African American girl happy: simple things like feeding chickens, dancing in the garden with a ladybug, climbing a tree, or eating spaghetti without a fork. Why is this book so special to Ashleigh? “I loved the topic of happiness,” she said. “I love that it’s about a little Black girl and the simple things that make her content. Growing up as a Black artist, you almost feel like you should be making a point about the Black experience, but this book is just about happiness. We all have the same experiences as everyone else. It doesn’t always have to be about any

I'm fortunate to be making art during a time in our history when we can create and share ideas as simple as the topic of happiness using a female, Black protagonist.” “People in general, whether you’re an adult or a kid, need to be reminded that your happiness is often found in the smallest things. Sometimes you lose sight of this as you get older.”

What’s in the future for Ashleigh? “I'd love to work on more children’s books. I feel like my style fits well for this type of work and I think I've found a new niche, and truly hope more opportunities open up for me here. I truly believe that the sky is the limit.” ❖ WWW.ASHLEIGHCORRIN.COM

A Day at Delaplane Cellars BY MARK LUNA

I

n northern Fauquier County, there’s an eight-mile stretch of two-lane road between I-66 westbound and State Highway 50 that meanders through the historic Crooked Run Valley, in the shadows of Lost Mountain. That stretch is US 17 North. About halfway down sits a 33 acre winery called Delaplane Cellars, and recently I had the chance to spend some time there. Founded by Jim and Betsy Dolphin back in 2007, Delaplane Cellars is a beautiful property that focuses on a line-up of Bordeaux inspired wines, with 11 acres under vine. Recently purchased by partners Daniel and Katie Gomez, Nicholas Jordan, and Thomas Duckenfeld, Delaplane Cellars is poised for its second decade of production, with the help of veteran Virginia winemaker Rick Tagg (Keswick, Pearmund Cellars, Barrel Oak), who has overseen all winemaking duties since 2016. Philadelphia born and Alexandria raised, Tagg is a conscientious, meticulous vigneron whose passion for wine dates back to his early working days waiting tables in French restaurants. He cares about the fruit and ‘getting it right’ in the cellar…and it shows in his wines. After an unrushed time spent wandering through the beautiful twostory tasting room building, hearing live acoustic music, and enjoying the valley views, I made my way to the tasting bar and was kindly guided through my flight by Julie, a Northern Virginia native who works there on weekends.

The White Wines The first wine up was the dry Petit Manseng 2018. A grape of southwestern France, petit manseng has truly flourished

in the Virginia wine world, and Rick’s production certainly holds up the evergrowing, state-wide standards. A beautiful gold color is complemented by aromas of candied fruit and spice, with a touch of brine and hints of honeysuckle. A wine of both great acid and weight, the palate is washed with fruits and texture.

Chardonnay 2017. With fruit sourced from a small vineyard site in northwest Loudoun County, this wine is whole cluster pressed and aged sur lie (on the lees) in neutral French oak barrel for approximately 8 months. I found this wine to be wonderfully reminiscent of central Burgundy blanc wines, ala Meursault, with both acidity and roundness. Melon, with hints of pear and peach, consume both the senses, and the finish is fantastic. This was probably my favorite wine of the day.

The Red Wines

If you’re a fan of white blends, you’ll enjoy the Melange Blanc 2018. An artful integration of 50% chardonnay, 25% viognier, 13% petit manseng and 12% white merlot (juice of the merlot grape without the skin contact), this was a fun wine to drink. Tasting sheet descriptors suggested ‘fresh peaches and tangerine, followed by flavors of lychee, clementine and lime on the palate’… whoever wrote this was spot on. Rounding out the white wine list was the fantastic Barrel Fermented

As mentioned earlier, Delaplane Cellars is devoted to the production of Bordeaux influenced wines, showcasing the classic varietals that make Bordeaux permanently timeless. Bordeaux rouge is about blend, and the day’s flight of reds couldn’t have been more seamless in their parts. The luscious Melan Rouge 2015 is a near 50/50 split of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, the champion grapes of Bordeaux. Dark berries, cherries, cocoa, and herbs are present, with silky tannins and a fading finish. Neutral French oak aging helped make this a very solid wine. The signature Left Bank Estate 2016 was next. Awarded 91 points by James Suckling, LBE 2016 has received deserved national recognition. Driven by 50% cabernet sauvignon, 33% cabernet franc, 9% merlot and 8% petit verdot, this earthy wine is solely produced from estate fruit. Tagg’s commitment to proper care of each varietal, with one blending trial after another, allows for perfect unity and balance. Aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, this wine is structured and full of character. Concluding the flight was the new guy on the red carpet, Rusticity 2017. A bold blend of 50% petit verdot, 30% merlot and 20% cabernet franc, this wine is intense and flavorful. In only its second vintage, Rusticity 2017 is already enjoying great popularity amongst the guests and is sure to please for many harvests to come. One of the great joys of a winery visit is a barrel room tasting with the

On my visit, I was lucky to experience such a tasting, with both winemaker Rick Tagg and coowner Nicholas Jordan, along with a few of their friends. We headed downstairs to a spacious two-room complex where a large fermenter and giant stainless steel tanks set the stage for a stacked barrels room, with rows of French oak barriques defining the space. An additional row of steel drums added to the charm of it all. It was here that Rick held center court. With his trusty wine thief in hand, he pulled one aging 2019 vintage wine after another. We

spent more than an hour tasting through his work and listening to the details of how each wine was made, producing what he refers to as ‘arguably the best vintage I’ve ever seen in Virginia.’ From drumsteeled sauvignon blanc to barrel-aged chardonnays, left bank blends, and estate single varietal offerings of cabernet franc, sauvignon, and petit verdot, these future bottlings are going to be well worth the wait…the future is looking bright as the sun for Delaplane Cellars. I hope you get out to Delaplane Cellars soon, taste through their wonderful wines,

summer camps & private schools With the weather still chilly and winter coats still hanging by the door, it may seem strange to start thinking about summer camps...but now is the time to plan. Experienced parents know that summer camps fill up fast and early. The benefits of summer camps for children are undeniable. They expose children to a variety of people, places, and activities which help them gain independence and learn lifelong skills. Camps can also get kids unplugged and physically active, as well as providing a break for parents during the long days of school vacation. This is also the time of year that parents may contemplate making a change in their children’s education, perhaps changing schools. If you’re thinking of investigating a private school education for the fall, now is the time to start. That’s why we created this special advertising section for private schools and summer camps to get you started in planning both your child’s summer fun and their education for next year.
