emember that movie A League of their Own? “There’s no crying in baseball!” Well, I wouldn’t have thought that my job would involve tissues either. But this issue turned out to have some emotional stories. Warrenton Lifestyle writer Gary Carroll, found that his interviews with Kathryn Lamonia and Carol Schumacher from FISH, and Sharon Ames from the Fauquier County Food Bank and Thrift Store, involved some tears as all these women discussed how emotionally involved they are in their missions. I’d like to note here that all the women brought attention to Rev. Tyrone Champion, another important leader in the fight against hunger in Fauquier County. He was not included in this article only because we have recently published a story about him and his organization, Community Touch. I encourage you to check it out at piedmontlifestyle.com/community/set-up-for-success/. But possibly the most emotional article is — both of us sniffled during the interview — LCDR Carolyn Kirkland, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, who served as a nurse during the Vietnam era. She told me, “I would say the bottom line is that I loved serving my country, and I loved being married to someone who served their country.” Since her husband’s death in 2016 from complications of Agent Orange, she has turned all her attention to the cause of veterans. An energetic senior, (who preferred I not mention her age, but trust me, she is a firecracker, and she still fits in her first uniform), she is absolutely tireless in her quest for first, assistance for veterans who are in need, as well as awareness of and recognition for their service, and finally, their stories. She insisted, after the interview, that she didn’t want the article to be about her, that there were so many others out there that had done far more. When I told her that she should write down her experiences, she said, “Oh, who would want to read that?” Your story deserves to be told too, Carolyn.

Building a Better Community Piedmont Dispute Resolution Center settles conflicts peacefully and brings people together

hen four members of a high school softball team went for a joyride after winning their regional championship game, their excitement took a dark turn. They used their bats to smash 10 mailboxes in a nearby neighborhood. The case was referred to the Piedmont Dispute Resolution Center (PDRC) for restorative justice. “Restorative justice is a very visceral face-to-face meeting between the offenders and the victims,” said Lawrie Parker, PDRC’s executive director. “We believe crime is a tear in the fabric of the community, so offenders should be involved in repairing that harm.” PDRC is committed to the idea that conflicts can be resolved by the people who are most affected. In addition to restorative justice, PDRC offers mediation services and mediation and conflict resolution training to help settle conflicts peacefully. Restorative justice looks at wrongdoing, the impact it has on the people involved, and what needs to happen to make things right. The meeting allows the victims to tell the offender how the crime has impacted them and to participate in how reparations are made. It encourages offenders to take responsibility for their actions. Trained, certified, neutral restorative justice facilitators, many with legal backgrounds, provide a safe, confidential environment for

all the participants. In the case of the smashed mailboxes, PDRC mediators met individually with each girl and her parents and reached out to each of the residents whose mailboxes were damaged. Restorative justice is always voluntary for victims, and five of the residents agreed to participate. Of the

five that did not participate, two wrote letters for the mediators to share during the restorative justice conference. At the conference, the girls spoke first. Two expressed remorse, but the other two did not think what they did was a big deal since it was just mailboxes. The mediators asked the parents of the two girls who did not seem to understand the impact of what they had done to read the letters sent by the residents. One of the letters was from a senior citizen with disabilities who said she had no one to help her put up a new mailbox and that she now had to drive to the post office to pick up her mail. The victims in attendance spoke about their disappointment and shock at the girls’ actions. One, a young mother, said that before she moved into the neighborhood, she had been a victim of domestic violence. She said that when she saw that her mailbox and the flowers that she and her children had planted had been smashed, she thought her abuser had found them. “You didn’t just smash my mailbox,” she said. “You took away my sense of security. You took away my sense of community. You robbed me of my joy.” Hearing the individual stories of their victims had a profound impact on all the girls. Everyone agreed that the offenders would each write letters of apology and replace the damaged mailboxes. The

Participants Sought for Peacebuilding Conversations As part of its Community Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP) program, PDRC is forming small groups of six to eight people from diverse backgrounds to come together to learn about each other and express their unique perspectives on specific topics. Facilitated by a specially trained PDRC staff member or volunteer, these conversations give people an opportunity to be heard and to listen to others. Anyone interested in participating or in forming a peacebuilding conversation group can contact CJP coordinators Aaron Addison or Lisa Barkema at 540-3476650 or cjp.pdrc@gmail.com.

neighbors and the girls also agreed to get together and plant new flowers around the young mother’s mailbox. “Restorative justice is all filtered through love and support,” said Parker. “This program says to offenders what you did was wrong. As a community, we are not excusing it or condoning it, but you are a member of this community, and we care about you. We care about the decisions you make. And to the victim, we’re saying we’re sorry that this happened. We hope that by being in this circle, you’ll feel good again about living in Fauquier County.” Restorative justice participants feel a greater satisfaction with the process than participants in the traditional justice system, and restitution is more likely to be honored.

Mediating Better Outcomes

Another large part of PDRC’s work is conducting mediation to resolve differences between parties in conflict. Some cases are court-ordered, but PDRC also makes its services available

{ NOVEMBER 2020 |

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

}

While some of its cases are court-ordered, PDRC offers its services to the general public for fees determined on a sliding scale. • Business • Workplace, commercial, residential real estate issues • Youth and schools • Peer mediation/conflict resolution, peacebuilding • Communities • Homeowners associations, neighborhood, community policing disagreements • Families and Individuals • Divorce and separation, custody/visitation, child and spousal support, co-parenting, parent/teen, landlord/tenant, elder care, co-parenting

Interested in becoming a mediator? PDRC offers training and mentoring for mediator candidates

to the general public for a modest fee on a sliding scale based on income. Cases that benefit from mediation might be landlord-tenant disputes; parent and teen difficulties; workplace disagreements; or child custody, visitation, and child and spousal support. In mediation, a trained, neutral mediator clarifies the issues and helps the parties analyze the information, communicate fairly, generate creative solutions, and reach an agreement which is acceptable to both parties. Mediation allows all participants to be heard, to understand each other, and to improve their relationship. Like most organizations, PDRC switched to virtual meetings because of the COVID-19 crisis. “It was hard at first because face-to-face meetings are one of the hallmarks of mediation and restorative justice,” said Parker. “Now, we give people an option to meet by phone, Zoom or in the office.”

Facilitating Better CommunityLaw Enforcement Relations

A few years ago, PDRC began working with the Warrenton Police Department and the African American community to strengthen their relationship. PDRC held listening sessions, and the result was a commitment by both groups to get together more often—both formally and informally—to continue to keep the lines of communication open. PDRC led a full-day conflict resolution training session so both groups could learn to work together to help resolve issues peacefully. Another initiative was to hold the Coming Together as One Community Family Fun Day, sponsored by PDRC, the Warrenton Police Department, the First Baptist Church of Warrenton, and the local Department of Juvenile Justice. The event brought the whole community together in the spirit of diversity and unity. Held annually for three years, the event grew larger each year. In 2019, it drew more than 300 people. It had to be canceled this year, but PDRC looks forward to holding it again in 2021 and continuing to build this important partnership. ❖ Piedmont Dispute Resolution Center 98 Alexandria Pike, Suite 35, Warrenton 540-347-6650 piedmontdisputeresolution.org facebook.com/PDRCconflictresolution

Painful, Prolonged Periods? You don’t have to live that way BY SUSAN TULINO

HER EXPERTISE:

Stephanie Spytek, MD, is an OB/GYN at Novant Health UVA Health System Lake Manassas OB/GYN. For more information about the doctors and services offered at Novant Health UVA Health System, visit novanthealthuva.org

ibroids are typically benign (noncancerous) cellular growths in the uterus that can cause pain or bleeding, or pelvic pressure or heaviness. They are very common and often appear during a woman’s reproductive years. We spoke with Stephanie Spytek, MD, of Novant Health UVA Health System Lake Manassas OB/GYN about the options for treating fibroids.

WHAT ARE SOME SYMPTOMS OF FIBROIDS? You may suffer from pain, excess menstrual bleeding, vaginal bleeding between cycles, pelvic pressure, backache. Sometimes the bleeding is so severe that it could lead to anemia and the need for a blood transfusion. Some women may have no symptoms at all. Fibroids are very, very common. I want to emphasize that. HOW ARE FIBROIDS DIAGNOSED? Typically, large fibroids may be felt on routine pelvic exams. The presence of fibroids can be confirmed through an ultrasound. IF YOU HAVE FIBROIDS BUT THEY’RE NOT CAUSING ANY TROUBLE, DO THEY NEED TO BE TREATED? If they cause no symptoms, they can be left untreated and instead observed for rapid growth or symptoms.

14

{ NOVEMBER 2020 |

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

}

HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND TREATING FIBROIDS? When fibroids are causing symptoms, various treatments are available. It really does vary from patient to patient; we take an individualized approach. If symptoms are mild, we may offer medication to control the bleeding. If that doesn’t help, surgical and procedural options are available – many of which are minimally invasive. A patient’s current or future desire for fertility is one factor that’s always important to consider.

AND IF MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY ISN’T SUCCESSFUL? As a last resort, we might talk about removing the uterus – a hysterectomy. Again, that’s often done with robot-assisted or laparoscopic – or small-incision camera – surgery. But there are a lot of factors that go into making that decision. Age, for one. Does the woman want to have children or more children? Also, not all fibroids in the uterus are the same. We look at the size of them, how many and where they’re located, which helps determine the best treatment option. Fibroids don’t always grow. Many shrink with menopause.

IS OUTPATIENT SURGERY AN OPTION? Yes, many of the surgeries and procedures available are outpatient. For example, with minimally invasive surgery, the recovery tends to be much quicker than with traditional open surgery. I often quote to patients that with a minimally invasive surgical approach, they will feel 70% to 80% better in two to four weeks, even for major pelvic surgery such as a hysterectomy.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE TALKED TO THEIR DOCTORS ABOUT EXCESS BLEEDING AND ABDOMINAL PAIN – BUT HAVEN’T HAD IT ADDRESSED? Seek out a doctor who will take the time to really listen to you. Look for a doctor who has been fellowship-trained in minimally invasive surgery, as they perform these surgeries on a regular basis. ❖

A Musical Journey Prestige Music Studio offers music education for all levels on an impressive number of instruments BY ANALIESE KREUTZER

“Y

{ NOVEMBER 2020 |

After graduating from East Carolina School of Music with her degree in performance and education, Moore went to work teaching in the North Carolina school system. When some of her students’ parents began asking about private lessons, she started teaching privately on the side. The same thing happened after she moved here and was teaching in Manassas. Eventually, she had so many students that she could no longer do both, so 14 years ago she devoted herself to private teaching. “Private teaching was always pulling at me, because that’s how I learned,” Moore said. “I absolutely love that one-on-one. I tailor the lessons to each individual student because everybody learns differently.” About two years ago, after receiving many calls asking if she taught voice or violin, Moore decided to expand her business so she didn’t have to say no to those inquiries. She used her contacts in the music world and her memberships in professional organizations to find qualified teachers she could partner with to offer those lessons. Today, her team includes Juliana Cardine,

ou never hear someone say ‘I just hated that I learned how to play an instrument.’ It’s always the opposite. They say, ‘I always wanted to play the guitar,’ or ‘I wish my mom hadn’t let me quit,’ said Jane Moore, lifelong musician and owner of Prestige Music Studio in Warrenton. “Music is a great thing to have in your life if it’s possible.” Eager to share her love of music with others on a one-on-one basis, she opened her studio 14 years ago. Moore plays and offers instruction on an impressive variety of instruments. A musician from an early age, she started out playing Jane Moore the saxophone as a child and then picked up the flute and started playing the piano in high school. Somewhere along the way she picked up the guitar. In college, she studied the oboe along with other instruments. This broad experience with different instruments has served her well. Today, she teaches piano, all woodwinds, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, percussion and guitar, and includes lots of music theory in her teaching as well. “I’ve been playing music for 30 years now,” she explained. “It was when I was studying music education in college that I worked at becoming proficient in more instruments so I could teach them. I love the variety of it all. Learning different instruments always kind of came easily to me.”

“this is such a passion of mine, and I love to share it.” vocalist and pianist, and Kristine Harner, strings instructor. The studio offers instruction to students of all ages, but the majority of her pupils are in the elementary to high school age range. Their experience levels range from students who have never touched an instrument to those playing at a collegiate level. “Students grow and change and develop over all those years, and what they become is quite outstanding. I can’t stress enough how important the connection between the teacher and the student is. They have to be willing to work for you, and you have to be willing to give them what they need,” Moore said. “That consistency is critical to their success. The rate of growth really doubles when the teacher gains the knowledge of how the student works and what they need.” Moore’s students are as committed to her as she is to them, which is evidenced by the high rate of retention among her students. “There are kids I started teaching when they were six years old, and now I am sending them to college,” she said. Students typically have one lesson per week, with each lesson running 30 minutes, 45 minutes or an hour, depending on the student’s level. Some students come to Moore’s studio in Warrenton for their lessons, but she also travels to students’ homes. She currently has students in Warrenton, Bealeton, Culpeper, Gainesville, Haymarket, Manassas, Nokesville, and many areas of Prince William County. When the pandemic hit and stay-at-home orders went into effect, Moore shifted her students to online classes. “It works,” she said. “It’s not as amazing as one-on-one, when you’re literally hands on, but the lessons are positive and educational and provide a sense of normalcy for the students.” The lessons were something for the kids to look forward to and still have on their schedules when everything was upended. “I told the kids now that we have this break, what a great time to work on things that were giving us trouble or do a little extra, fill the house with music,” said Moore. In the pre-pandemic world, Moore provided her students with opportunities to perform before live audiences. “I believe performing is important. It’s part of what we do. Everybody has their own musical journey, but I tell everybody all the time to learn this wonderful craft and gift and to never share it would be sad.” Prestige usually puts on performances at the Lasley Centre for the Performing Arts three times per year. Plus, Moore arranges some other, smaller performances as well, such as open mic nights. As word of mouth spreads and more students come to Prestige, Moore says the most stressful thing about her work is that “there’s only one of me. I wish I could take on a hundred more students. I want to take on the world because this is such a passion of mine, and I love to share it.” ❖ prestigemusicstudio.com 703-943-6563

The shop is where I have always gone for something special to present to my host or hostess for dinner, a gift for my wife when I had exhausted my ideas, or a unique Christmas gift. I was never disappointed. As Jeanne-Marie acquired the shop during the early phase of COVID pandemic, she was often asked “why now?” She had long been interested in starting a business of her own and had discussed with Johnson her desire to retire for some time. In March, they both agreed the time was right. As Town Duck sold food, it was deemed essential and was able to stay open when most shops were required to close. As customer activity was slow, Jeanne-Marie was able to focus on her inventory, decide what to keep and what to add—the “different waddle.” Jeanne-Marie grew up in Warrenton and feels quite at home here after moving back in 2016 from Norfork, where she worked in her profession as a physical therapist. And, she has kept the business all in the family.

Her mother, Anne Schalestock, who worked with Ms. Johnson for years, has stayed on, sharing with her daughter her personal experience and insights. As being a small business owner is new for her, she has sought the assistance of her husband Max, who has an M.BA degree and business expertise. She also calls on her three ten-year-old girls to help on occasion. Yes, they are triplets! As if there were not enough to keep her busy, she also teaches Yoga on the side. Since taking over the business, JeanneMarie has updated her website where she posts something that is special every day. One of the first additions she has made is her Fish Friday. Based on customer requests, she orders a wide variety of fish and seafood from Baltimore each week. One week, she says she sold about 200 pounds of fish; she averages about 100 pounds per week. Some popular requests have included Toki salmon, halibut, mussels, and crabmeat. She also has expanded her stationery inventory, along with cards and journals, and has added baby clothing after doing lots of research with various vendors and soliciting advice from customers. Jeanne-Marie mentioned that she recently met with a designer of baby clothing to learn more about what is new and creative in that genre. Following her predecessor’s example, she is particularly interested in supporting local vendors, including seeking sources of local herbs and spices. Customer traffic has been slowly increasing, giving her the opportunity to learn more about customer needs and interests. Every day, she says she is excited to go to work, in part because running a small business is what she has always wanted and also because she loves meeting and learning to know more folks. “Come check us out” is the message Jeanne-Marie wants locals to hear, whether they loved the wine, cheese, and unique gifts of the Town Duck before, or are curious about the new offerings of baby clothing, stationery or Fish Friday. Remember, it’s still the Town Duck you always loved, just with the addition of Jeanne-Marie’s energy and creativity. ❖ The Town Duck 100 Main Street, Warrenton 540.347.7237 townduck.com facebook.com/townduck

arkham, in northern Fauquier County, is home to several popular destinations for families looking for fresh air and great views in the beautiful Virginia countryside. Stribling Orchard tops the list as a Fauquier family tradition for six generations and just over 200 years, offering pick-yourown apples, cider, local honey and baked goods, picnicking, and farm animal visits. The fall season usually brings visitors by the carload to the orchard to enjoy this muchloved family destination, but 2020 served up several hits to the Stribling family — COVID-19, a heavy frost, and then a barn fire — rendering the operation closed until 2021. “We always get some sort of frost, and we welcome that because it thins the trees,” said Stacia Stribling. “Apples grow in bunches of five, and you don’t want them all to survive because the apples compete for nutrients and stay small. There is a critical temperature you can’t drop below for a

critical number of hours or there are devastating consequences, and that is what we had in May — 98 percent of our crop was lost. A few survived — the Yorks and Romes — because those are late-season apples. We thought okay, we can open for one weekend in October, but then we had the fire.” On a Friday afternoon in September, while Stacia and her daughter were reading, her husband Robert was in his home office with their son, who glanced out the window and saw the barn in flames. “We have one full time and one part time employee on the farm, and they sprang into action, letting the animals out and going into the buildings that were not engulfed, saving equipment, iPads, safes with money — anything they could grab,” Stacia said. “Thank God for them. They directed our son to watch the goats in the field, giving him a focus, while they worked. We did lose some equipment and all of our supplies for the orchard, like maps, pick poles, toilet paper, and other supplies.” With the orchard supplies lost, the one planned October weekend was not LEFT: Stacia Stribling, her husband Robert Stribling VI, and their kids Jayden and Aubree. possible, and the family turned its attention to recovery. “We are trying to think of the positive in this,” she said. “For instance, the entrance has always been single-car and we talked about changing it to re-route traffic and make things easier, but never got around to it. This is our opportunity — we can make those changes as well as moving the snack shack to a better location and we can build the barn differently. We would like to make room for partnerships, too. Randy Morgan, who owns Naked Mountain Winery, has approached us about doing a hard cider and we’ve tossed the idea of a cider shack around. For now, we are beginning the long process of cleaning up, sketching out ideas, and working with insurance who will cover the barn costs.” Stacia is a native New Yorker, growing up on Long Island, cutting school to go to the beach and Broadway shows. “I had not lived the farm life before moving here 14 years ago, and now I am snuggling goats and gathering eggs!” Robert grew up on the very farm where the orchard is located and it’s all he has ever known. Born in California, he and his family moved back when he was three years old. “His dad was running the

farm, and we assumed we would inherit it at some point because he is the oldest of five and his grandmother established the line that way,” Stacia said. “We also assumed his dad would be on the farm until the end of his days, and we were a little surprised when he announced in 2006 that he was done and was ready to hand it over to us.” Stacia was living in Jeffersonton at the time, finishing her doctorate, and Robert was (and still is) at Northrop Grumman. They commuted for several years, working at the farm on the weekends while Robert’s sister and her husband managed the operation. “When the kids were born, we wanted to be in Fauquier County full time, so we decided to dive in. We totally gutted the 200 year old farmhouse, finishing a huge renovation three years ago.” Anyone in farming will tell you that it’s not the money that keeps you moving. “Our cousins own nearby Hartland Orchard, and they have branched out with agritainment, like a corn maze and vegetables,” Stacia

We are Stribling strong, and we are coming back! We appreciate everybody hanging in there with us and know we appreciate you and will see you soon!” Striblings saw an opportunity. Pasture-raised Stribling Beef is now available for order on the Stribling Orchard website. Stacia’s sister in Florida pressed the couple to let her start a GoFundMe account when orchard fans asked about donating after the fire. “Insurance covers the buildings, so we were hesitant. But with no monthly income to cover the orchard costs and get the trees ready for next year, we agreed.” Donations from the community poured in, and to date over $24,000 has been raised in support. “Our customers and orchard families have been amazing — families who have been coming for years, past employees and seasonal workers like our Leeds Episcopal friends. Most of the workers at the orchard are from the church community — their attendance drops during apple season because of us!” The tightly-knit farming community, including Naked Mountain Vineyard and Hollin Farms, are helping as well and looking at ways to collaborate. “Our three orchards are always hanging out,” Stacia said. “Last year, we had a Farmsgiving together with farmers in the area. It just speaks to our community here.” “It is very powerful to see what his place means to people,” she added. “We have Family Legacy Day, when we see three generations of people at the orchard making memories. There are picnics and pictures in front of the same apple tree year after year — It’s truly amazing.” While the orchard is not welcoming guests for the 2020 season, they absolutely have their sights set on 2021. “We are Stribling strong, and we are coming back! We appreciate everybody hanging in there with us and know we appreciate you and will see you soon!” ❖

the tremendous support they receive from county organizations and ordinary individuals who volunteer their time, provide funds, and donate food and supplies. They laud the support they receive from churches, local charitable organizations, and generous individuals, and also recognize the important work done by Rev. Tyrone Champion at Community Touch. Traditionally, these two organizations split the holidays, with FISH supplying Christmas meals, and the Food Bank and Thrift Store supplying those for Thanksgiving. The goal of organizers Kathryn Lamonia, Carol Shumacher, and Sharon Ames is to ensure everyone in need in this county will not only not be hungry, but will have a special holiday meal this year.

If the organizers and volunteers of two local nonprofits have anything to say about it, everyone in need in this county will have something special in the way of a holiday meal this year.

t is easy to forget, especially during the busy holiday season, those that are hungry in our community. But the need is never forgotten, not even for a moment, by those leading two local organizations dedicated to feeding our county. FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help, a Fauquier County nonprofit working to supply nutritional needs in the community), and the Fauquier Community Food Bank (pictured above) and Thrift Store, are dedicated to the goal of ensuring that no one in the county goes hungry anytime during the year, holiday season included. These leaders of these organizations are dedicated to, and deeply emotionally involved in, helping those in need. Both nonprofits credit their success to

FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help) FISH Coordinator Kathryn Lamonia and Food Manager Carol Shumacher describe FISH as “neighbors helping neighbors.” This community volunteer organization, founded in 1983, became an official 501(c)3 charity in 1999 and has expanded over the years to encompass four components, each of which serves the needs of different segments of the community.

Food Pantry FISH’s food pantry provides nutritional food primarily to folks who fall into an often overlooked “gray area”: those that are — often temporarily — unable to adequately feed their families due to job layoffs, family crises, or most recently, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, yet do not qualify for the Food Bank. In working towards the goal of providing our county with quality, nutritional food, FISH purchases 90 percent of their food for the pantry from local groceries and markets, and the Fauquier Education Farm grows and donates fresh vegetables. Volunteers at the food pantry put together DASH meal kits; clients use FISH menus to pick out what they need. Clients can come once a month and generally receive food valued at between 80 and 100 dollars.

Putting Thanksgiving together: Board president receiving donated turkeys at Thanksgiving which, together with the donated food and fresh produce provided, will create special meals for families who need them.

Weekend Power Pack FISH’s Weekend Power Pack focuses on the nutritional needs of school children. Usually provided at the schools, the some 375 packages of lunch and breakfast meals packed by teams of volunteers are now available at strategic locations around the county for students who need them. Due to the pandemic, the amount of food included has been increased. Kathryn was clearly emotional as she told me this experience often becomes personal, as she and her volunteers see the needs first-hand.

Senior Supplemental Nutrition Program FISH’s Senior Supplemental Nutrition Program partners with the Department of Social Services and Hospice and works through the Senior Center to provide monthly nutritional support to seniors, many of whom live alone. The PATH Foundation helps to fund these efforts, and food auctions co-sponsored by the local American Legion Post provide funding as well.

Book Bag Program FISH also has helped to facilitate providing book bags of school supplies to school-aged children in need. Due to COVID-19, these supplies are needed more than ever this year. They hope to expand this program in the future by providing supplies to teachers as well.

Fauquier Community Food Bank and Thrift Shop

DID YOU KNOW that Awesome Smiles is a now a proud preferred provider for disabled veterans?

Complementing FISH’s programs, Fauquier Community Food Bank and Thrift Shop focuses on helping those in the county most desperately in need of nutritional food. Those using the Food Bank must be verified by Social Services as truly unable to purchase food to meet their basic nutritional needs. Chatting with Executive Director Sharon Ames in her office colocated with the Thrift Shop on Shirley Avenue, I learned that sale of donated clothing, housewares, and toys in the Thrift Shop helps to provide some of the funds to purchase food to supply the food bank. But those earnings are not enough. She revealed that while most of the canned goods are provided by the USDA, the Food Bank cannot purchase food that is fresh with its limited funds. Tears came to her eyes as she explained that those gaps are filled with support they receive from the local community. The local farmers and the Fauquier Education Farm always come through with donations, enabling them to also offer fresh vegetables and local meats. In addition, local 4-H chapters provide eggs, as well as meat and milk. As I wandered around the facilities, I was impressed by the large bins with donated fresh vegetables and apples. For some, fresh meat is not only a particular need, but a treat. Sharon told me about helping a single man pick out groceries. When she noticed a distracted look, she asked him how she could help. Holding some meat in his hands, he looked at her and said, “This is real meat. The only meat I have had for many months has been canned dog food that I have fried.” Early in the pandemic, Sharon witnessed the long lines of newly jobless folks outside the food pantry waiting to get food for their families. Again tearful, she remembers thinking, “How am I going to feed all these people?” Again, with an outpouring of local support, she was able to help these folks through the crisis. She estimates the Food Bank has been able to help between 500 and 700 Fauquier families.

In the past, county school buses would collect the donations of food brought in by the students from the schools and deliver them to the Food Bank. With the schools not in session, that system was in jeopardy this year. But on November 14, the school buses will be out again for this purpose. Donations this month will be particularly valuable as volunteers are already putting together, as they do every year, the ingredients of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for those certified by Social Services. The community has the opportunity to bring food donations — to supplement the 200 turkeys given by one donor — directly to the buses, which will be located at schools around the county. With the community’s support, the buses will again be able to continue to this Thanksgiving-time tradition. If you live in Fauquier County, you have a great opportunity, especially during this holiday season, to volunteer to be part of the work of these two busy organizations in whatever way you are able. The leaders and volunteers in both groups are committed and determined to blot out hunger in this county, and consider this to be the most important and meaningful work they have ever done. ❖ WWW.FAUQUIERFOODBANK.COM | WWW.FISH.ORG

Thanksgiving kicks off a holiday season of merriment where it’s important to have fun, but equally important to give back to the community and help those in need. While financial donations go a long way, nonprofits who help those in need also can benefit from donations of food, goods-in-kind, services, and even what may be the most valuable: your time. Every small act counts! Consider giving even just a small amount of time to help out through volunteer service. Due to current state-mandated restrictions on public gatherings during Forward Virginia Phase Three, many organizations have either discontinued or restricted in-person volunteer opportunities. The best way to find out if your favorite nonprofit needs volunteer help is by calling them directly or sending them a message via Facebook. Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine was able to confirm the following volunteer opportunities that are available during this holiday season.

Various Volunteer Opportunities Updated Weekly PATH Foundation operates the PATH Volunteer Hub, an online portal that lists volunteer opportunities in Fauquier, Rappahannock, and northern Culpeper counties. The website works with many nonprofit groups to market their volunteer opportunities in one central location online. The service has become well-known in the area; it lists volunteer opportunities for families, students, and drivers, and even includes a section on virtual volunteering. Lynn Lauritzen manages the volunteer hub, working with nonprofits to get their volunteer needs listed on the website and also helps people from the community find meaningful volunteer projects to work on. Lauritzen calls this service a volunteer match, hoping to make a great connection when both parties receive something of value out of the volunteer efforts. Lauritzen encourages anyone wanting to volunteer to consider looking at a nonprofit’s needs through a more self-reflective lens that focuses on the specific personality traits, interests, subject-matter knowledge, and professional skills of the volunteer. “If someone from the community has a skill, they should call PATH to volunteer…10 people with the same skill set [may] want to use it differently. We act as mediators. We want to make it easier for the community and the nonprofit,” noted Lauritzen. The PATH Volunteer Hub anticipates having its annual Season of Giving section with more holiday volunteer opportunities operational starting on November 1. The PATH Foundation is located in Warrenton. Access the hub at LetsVolunteer.org; contact Lynn Lauritzen for more information (540) 680-4148.

PASSION AND PRIDE FOR VETERANS LCDR Carolyn Kirkland, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps BY PAM KAMPHUIS

Interview with Warrenton veteran LCDR Carolyn Kirkland, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, a retired US Navy nurse and a dynamic and energetic advocate for recognition and awareness of veterans.

How did you become interested in nursing and the Navy? It's been an interesting life, and even though some parts were hard, I wouldn’t trade any of it. I was raised in an orphanage. My favorite books when I was growing up were Cherry Ames books, and in the one that I loved the most she was a flight nurse. And that’s what I dreamed of being. In a nutshell, I got a scholarship to nursing school, and then I became a hotel nurse for Conrad Hilton and the Palmer House in Chicago. In that period of time, in 1966, I really wanted to be in the military. That's when Vietnam was really kicking up. I wanted to enlist. I wanted to be somebody, but I didn’t know what that was. I didn’t know what that meant. I just wanted it. So I joined the Navy in 1966, and since I had some nursing experience, I went in as a Lieutenant Junior Grade.

So what types of postings did you have in your career? My first posting was at Oakland Hospital in Oakland CA, a 20-bed amputee ward. It was probably the best experience of my life. At that time I probably weighed 95 pounds. And some of the patients were big men, and they were all amputees. I had to get them in and out of bed. They were afraid they were going to hurt me. I was having back pain because of it, but I was afraid they’d medic me out of the Navy. I was determined to avoid that. I was not going to give in to the pain, I was absolutely not going to. I had orders to the USS Repose, a hospital ship, but I refused because of the back issues. Instead, I was posted to Naples, Italy, doing general nursing. There they were having a problem with hepatitis — it was just rampant. Then I was sent to Quantico, where I also did general nursing. That’s where I met my husband.

I would say the bottom line is that I loved serving my country. I loved being married to someone who served their country.

CLOCKWISE FROM BOTTOM LEFT: 1. This is a photo of Bud when he was 16 and had just joined the Marines. He got into a little trouble, and the judge told him, you can either go to juvie, or you can join the Marines. What’ll it be? 2. At the Marine Corps Birthday Formal. 3. LEFT: This is Bud while he served in Vietnam. He was very impressive: he rose from the lowest enlisted rank to receive a battlefield commission and serve as a combat ground air traffic controller. His men loved him. Everyone loved him. He was the last Marine out of Khe Sanh and was awarded a Bronze Star. When Bud got back from Vietnam, his best friend Sam said to me, you gotta meet this guy, you’ll really love him. But I said, I’m not getting married, I’m going to stay in the Navy. One day I walked into a bar at Quantico and there’s Bud, handsome as he was, surrounded by a lot of women. I said, I’m outta here. But in the end we fell in love, and we were together for 45 years.

Tell me about some local veterans.

day. Then, what’s the next war everyone talks about? The recent war in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s just like we skipped Korea, Vietnam...we’re skipping all the Shock and Awe, Fallujah. Those guys that were there, they are still out there. Some of them literally have nothing, and they need our help and appreciation. And there are so many others who aren’t appreciated and recognized, like the medical staff. What about the nurses and doctors that risked their lives taking care of these soldiers? There were nurses and medics who were captured, treated as POWs in Vietnam, beaten and sent to China to be beaten even worse. I worked with some of them when I was a nurse at Oakland.

Let me tell you about this guy, Jack, he was one of the cashiers at Harris Teeter. Jack and I started talking politics one day, and it turns out that he was an army ranger in Vietnam. Those guys were in up to their necks and experienced so much, so then we talked about the military. He had Agent Orange so badly. He had it everywhere. Every bone, his brain. There wasn’t any place in his body that wasn’t affected. Because I was a nurse, he would talk to me about his illness. The doctors gave him maybe another year, and he lasted three. Here’s a guy who...nobody knew what he’d gone through. He’s standing there going through treatment for Agent Orange, probably hurting like hell, and just continuing to check out shoppers with a smile and kind words. But no one knew. it made me sad, that all these people walking through the store had no idea… I said to the managers, we need to make sure he’s recognized, but these young gals, they don’t get it. They say, oh, we appreciate him, but they really don’t understand. He’s gone now, I always say a prayer for him, I loved him. I gave him a hug every time I saw him. He was an inspiration.

What is the best way to show appreciation to veterans?

What does Arlington National Cemetery mean to you?

When I go to Harris Teeter, I like that they have four parking spots designated for veterans. When I see veterans there, I always talk to them. When you see a vet, stop him and thank them for their service. That’s why you see them wearing their hats and their ribbons: they want you to know they did something during the war. Ask them about their experiences. And that will make them smile! The problem is that women vets don’t often wear their hats and pins and t-shirts, so they’re especially unrecognized. I’m trying to help that too, to bring attention to women veterans and help with whatever they need.

I love going to Arlington to thank them all for doing what they did. And it’s made me more and more sensitive as I’ve gotten older. When I go to Bud’s grave, I walk across to other sections. Close to him, there are all these Korean vets that were POWs, and nobody even glances at them. The last time I went up it was to place a wreath on Bud’s grave, I cried all the way from the chapel, picking up a wreath for him, and going to his gravesite to place it. And people are running around and taking pictures like it was an amusement park. Kids are just running around. They’re not teaching these kids about properly placing the wreath and

ABOVE: This was taken during a funny time in our marriage when I outranked my husband. He would salute me, and I figured, well, this isn’t going to last! It was like a joke between us. But eight months later, he made the same rank.

When did you leave the military? I got out in 1977, and eventually we chose to settle in Virginia. Then I was the outreach nurse at Vint Hill until it closed in 1997, and I also worked at the Department of Rehabilitation in Manassas. Bud had Agent Orange, and I cared for him at home. When he passed, I didn’t know who I was anymore.

But you’ve found it now. I don’t know. It’s developing. I was Bud’s wife. Bud was a larger than life character. Since he passed away, I have more time to do what I wanted to do. My focus in life at this point is just veterans.

Why is that so important to you? I would say the bottom line is that I loved serving my country. I loved being married to someone who served their country. I feel some veterans are being overlooked, especially those that fought in the Korean War. I want awareness and recognition for what they’ve done for this country. I want their stories. I want everyone to appreciate what they went through. I feel passionate about it because we’re leaving a bunch behind, a whole generation of military that served this country. It’s like when they take off their uniforms, everyone forgets what they did. Now so many people don’t know who they are, what experiences they’ve had, and what their story is. Everyone focuses on WWII vets, because there are less and less of them every

touching the stone and saying the person's name out loud. These veterans deserve respect. I can’t do that again. I said never again. I’ll go other times. I go up on our anniversary now, and for his birthday, and for the Marine Corps birthday. But I’ll never go on those busy days; it’s more than I can take, to have somebody disrespect that ground.

Why not tell your story? Really, who would want to hear it? That’s what bothers me; I don’t want it to be about me. There are so many out there who have done far more than I. I wanted you to meet my neighbor, Dina. She was an enlisted army combat soldier and was injured. When she got out, she was disabled, and she’s now a nurse, a mother, and she just received her master’s degree. She works with research on traumatic brain injury and PTSD. She has a story. There are so many stories. I didn’t want to be interviewed, I want you to interview all these other veterans.

So why did you agree to talk to me? Again, because it’s Veterans Day. I’m pushing and pushing. How much time do I have left? How much time at my age do I have left as healthy as I am right now? While I can still work towards this goal? That’s why.

How are you working towards your goals? I volunteer with Hero’s Bridge, I’m a member of the American Legion and the

Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), and I’m an ambassador for the Boulder Crest Foundation. My goal is to get help for veterans who need it, and get awareness and recognition for all veterans, including women, who often fly under the radar as far as this goes. Not everyone has the time like I do. I’m really trying to encourage young vets to join the legions, the veterans organizations. First of all, they need the support that they can give each other, because they’ve had similar experiences. And we need new blood. This responsibility needs to pass to the next generation. There are over 600,000 veterans in Virginia. That’s a big number. But if I can just help one, get them into a program they need, even if I don’t know it, I’d be so happy. Or reach one more volunteer to give their time. I recruit everywhere I go — doctor’s offices, the grocery store. I give out literature, talk to people, raise awareness of the programs that are available to vets and the needs of the organizations that help them and are in need of volunteers and support. Really, just a little of a volunteer’s time can go such a long way. I talk a lot, and I talk fast. I don’t know how much time I have to continue to help, and I tell people, I’m rolling here, you can either jump on with me or jump off, I’m not slowing down. ❖

rom the time we are born, we look up to older people and authority figures in our lives. That’s one of many reasons why it is so important for young children to be surrounded by positive role models. After spending time as an assistant

coach for his daughter’s softball team, Tyrone Nunnally came to realize that there were many children who had barriers, such as cost, that kept them from participating in sports. In 2015, he launched 2nd2Nunn Sports in order to fill that need in the community. 2nd2Nunn Sports is a non-profit organization in Warrenton committed to providing programs at an affordable price for youth and adults that support a healthier, more self-sufficient generation by linking fitness, fun, training, team building,

academic success, and community service. “We use sports and fitness as a tool to mentor them and to get them to chase goals and not let anyone put any limitations on them,” Nunnally said. “Each kid matures at a different pace. Once they’re told they aren’t good enough at something, they’ll never try again. For someone to minimize their opportunities at these critical ages, it inhibits their growth.” Nunnally’s own background has also contributed to his dedication to helping the children of the community grow up with the confidence to do anything they set out to do. Tyrone is a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marines for four years before attending George Mason University where he played football. When he recognized a need for affordable fitness programs for children, he got to work. “There needs to be a healthy outlet to

Developing Confidence! Developing confidence is the key to growth. 2nd2nunn uses intense mental and physical development to guide each young mentee to be their best self.

best. No matter the cost,” Nunnally said. “We focus on different approaches to help them reach the ultimate goal. Not the other person’s best, but their best.” When a child walks through their doors, you can expect them to receive an experience that is completely tailored to them. Tyrone and the staff at 2nd2Nunn understand that each child requires a different approach. While there are some kids who naturally excel in all things athletics, there are just as many children who hate working out. The mission is to provide everyone with the confidence to not only participate, but to enjoy themselves while they’re participating. “We care about results with the kids. My experiences in the military taught me to approach this from the angle of ‘you’re only as strong as your weakest link,’ Nunally said. “ We want to bring that weakest link up to be just as competitive as the other, stronger links.” My experiences in the military taught me to approach reaching the goal from the

angle of identifying the weakest link. A person is only as strong as their weakest link” Nunnally said. “We want to bring that weakest link up to be just as competitive as the other, stronger links.” “We care about results with the kids. The way to get results and my approach to it, my experience from the military, you’re only as strong as your weakest link,” Nunnally said. “We want to bring that weakest link up to be just as competitive as the others.” In addition to all of their fitness programs, they offer a Changing Lives Campaign that combines intense weekly training with stimulating physical, academic, and social goal setting and achievement. Their goal with this program is to develop and prepare young leaders for success. ❖ If you would like to support 2nd2Nunn Sports in providing these healthy, active opportunities for children and young adults, you can visit their website and donate at 2nd2nunn.inc/donate. teach these kids that it doesn’t matter what someone else’s opinion is,” Nunnally said. “You need to be able to have a place to work on you and become your best self. That’s what we provide.” There are many programs and offerings available to anyone who wants to get involved with the organization. What originally started as a mentoring organization has quickly grown and evolved as more needs have arisen. “We came up with additional fitness programs because of the digital age,” Nunnally said. “Kids don’t have to go outside anymore and PE class is minimal in that you can choose whether or not to participate. We want kids to feel good about themselves and to get active.” The 2nd2Nunn philosophy centers around the thought that sports and fitness have the power to strengthen individuals and their relationships with others and in turn, strengthen our community. While mentorship is built-in to every program they offer, there are program offerings aimed at helping individuals and children that meet them where they are and what their goals are. “For the kid who wants to play a sport at a high level or the kids who want to develop themselves, we created the middle school programs where we introduce them to body movements and take them to the next level where they learn agility and conditioning,” Nunnally said. Currently, they are working on a collegiate development program, but their main focus is on school-aged children. While 2nd2Nunn is focused on getting children to be more active, it is so much more than a fitness organization. “We’re an organization that truly believes in empowering the kids and what I mean by that is, our focus is all about the kid and helping them become their

The Great Pumpkin Cooking Hack While canned pumpkin will work in this recipe, get a higher, fluffier — and better tasting — lasagna using fresh pumpkin. Because they have rinds that are next to impossible to cut, roasting them without cutting is the easiest (and safest) way to cook them. This process can also be used for butternut squash DIRECTIONS: 1. Wash the pumpkin well under tepid running water. 2. Position your oven rack so the pumpkin will fit into the oven. Preheat to 375 degrees. 3. Prepare the pan: use a baking pan with shallow sides (not a cookie sheet). Line it with foil or baking parchment and lightly coat with cooking spray. 4. Cut a small notch or hole in the pumpkin to allow steam to escape and place in pan. 5. Roast, uncovered, until it’s very soft and collapses when touched; about 50 minutes for an 8-inch pumpkin, longer for larger pumpkins. 6. Cool until easily handled, remove and discard rind and seeds. 7. Mash the soft pumpkin meat and fluff with a fork, and continue to your recipe!

A R I S ING B LACK VOICE: Meet Graelin C. Kimbrough, The Community Discussion Leader BY AMANDA M. SOCCI PHOTO BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

O

n May 25, police in Minnesota arrested and killed George Floyd, an unarmed Black man; this caused nationwide riots and jump started the Black Lives Matter movement. A Black man from Gainesville responded by establishing himself as a community discussion leader. Enter Graelin C. Kimbrough, a former police officer, father of three, and community activist who wants to create meaningful change by welcoming open and honest dialogue. On June 3, while the nation was bleeding with its open wound of racial division, Kimbrough quietly posted in the

“You just need to listen. People want to be heard.”

Western Prince William Chatter Facebook group: “… many people have honest questions about … the Black experience. Too many people talk about us, not enough people talk to us… I am willing to give you the answers I have … Send me a message in my DM and I will respond here.” Just three days later, Kimbrough closed the chapter on his law enforcement career. By posting publicly on Facebook, Kimbrough pledged to help his local community in Gainesville by soothing the racial conflicts and encouraging questions in a safe, judgment-free forum. His initiative would soon lead him to be a guest panelist in race-based community discussions as he freely made himself available as a sounding board and moderator de facto of discussions about Black people. Born in San Diego, California into a military family, Kimbrough moved a lot in his youth, racking up some difficult life experiences among the gang culture in San Diego and college life as a single father in Detroit, Michigan. His parents divorced when he was 16, leading him to fend for himself. In 2006, Kimbrough moved to Virginia to work as a police officer for the state and later, in federal law enforcement, but after nearly ten years, he chose to leave the police force because “it has taken a lot out of my health,” noting that the BLM movement was a series of coincidences and that his mounting health problems most significantly contributed to him leaving his job. He experienced “structural problems in society with

52

{ NOVEMBER 2020 |

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

}

race and discrimination” on the job and in his personal life, stating they were more than he could handle. On top of that, he felt his education was never enough to get him ahead. Closely bonded to his mother, Kimbrough accepted “mom pushing me to higher levels of education” and believing he “always had to do more to get promotions.” “Knowing I had to do more work than coworkers was very difficult. I had to show better metrics in performance to get equal treatment,” explained Kimbrough matter-of-factly. He also explained the difficulties of being a supervisor, having a team of Black officers to manage, and seeing his team underperform. Although he was “blessed to handle that, there was a lack of institutional support.” The words a senior officer had told him years before rang true: “I was too black to be blue, therefore, I was purple.” Kimbrough has lived through a lot: starting his adult journey at the ripe age of 16, experiencing his parents divorcing, moving and acclimating to dangerous cities, raising a child on his own, trying to improve his life through advanced education and a respectable career in law enforcement while dealing with internal problems and racism. Now married and a father of three, Kimbrough never let his life challenges define him. He used past difficulties to breathe new life into thoughtful conversation with his community. “Erudite conversations have been important to me for the last seven to eight years,” he noted, and after the George Floyd incident, “I saw all this angry fighting as misguided. People were trying to get at something.” Not prompted by anyone except his own conscience and a desire to effect a sort of peace and calmness that was sorely needed, Kimbrough posted a simple message on Facebook hoping people would ask open questions about the Black experience. He accepted questions privately and “reserved judgment and provided information with context and nuance.” “You just need to listen. People want to be heard.” Kimbrough learned those lessons in law enforcement and applied them with a modern context to what he perceived was confusion and unanswered questions about Black people. The community in the Facebook group supported Kimbrough and responded favorably to his open communications and peacemaking mission. Kimbrough is now a program administrator for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and will surely fulfill his duties with the same compassion and care he has exercised his entire life. Despite his success as a community discussion leader, Kimbrough is quick to humble himself as just “a contributing member of society” ready to do “community work” without pretentious labels. A sign of a great leader. ❖
