FORBEARANCE WHAT IT IS & WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW!
By Dawn Arruda When COVID hit the US and the world came to a halt and business shut down unemployment hit a record high not seen since the great depression. The government stepped in and created a Mortgage relief program through the CARES Act which initially granted a 180 day Forbearance to homeowners with mortgages backed by the federal government or government sponsored enterprise such as Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Private lenders typically allowed 90 days. It is important to note that most people who called their mortgage servicer and asked to be put in the program may not have exactly known the terms, lots of homeowners didn’t even get a document to fill out or sign, they just assumed they didn’t have to make a payment. It is important to note that if you applied, even if you inquired they may have set you up for the program, you should and must know the terms of your forbearance. THIS IS NOT A FORGIVEN AMOUNT OF YOUR MORTGAGE! It is a pause button if you will. Nearly 8% of mortgages in this country, roughly 3.8 million homeowners are in forbearance according to the Mortgage Bankers Association as of July 26th. It is important to know what this means
for you as the homeowner and how every servicer will handle these missed payments differently. Some will ask that they be paid when the forbearance time is up ( that means you must pay all payments to catch up ) , some may tack the payments on the end of the loan, some may work out a payment plan that get you back on track but the important thing to remember is you need to know the terms of the agreement when they come due because again this is not a forgiveness and if you can not work this out you could fall in to a foreclosure situation and not even realize it. Some ways of working these forbearances out might be to talk to your trusted mortgage advisor about a possible refinance, with the rates so historically low this might be a good time to get back on track if the lender will allow. Keep in mind refinancing might not be the best thing if the fees for the refi are typically 2% to 6% and that might not make sense if the rate change isn’t significant. Remember to keep your credit scores intact as lenders have tightened down on standards to qualify for refinancing. Ask for an extension with your servicer ( to whom you make your payments to) If you are under the CARES Act you can ask for another 180 days. Remember you still will owe those payments.

You can ask your lender for a loan modification which can change the terms of the original mortgage, be sure to understand everything about this prior to agreeing. Loan modifications can be a bit of surprise when you go to sell because you may owe more on your loan then you think. You can also take advantage of a really great sellers market by listing your home for sale. Pending home sales nationally jumped by over 44 percent in May and the national home price jumped over 7% in the first quarter. So if you feel you can’t afford your home it might be a great time to sell with inventory being low and prices improving. Have a good honest conversation with your trusted Realtor. The moral of this story is know where you are and where you might be so that you can be ahead of the curve. Foreclosure is the last resort option and the CARES Act protects you until the forbearance time comes to an end so know the facts and details. Also stay on top of what the state is doing, some states are issuing temporary moratoriums and stays. Be diligent and ask for help from the people you trust. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay positive! And gets some Vitamin D!

hen my daughter was three years old, we put her in soccer. With two older boys who were running us around with baseball, soccer, and a little football, we figured it was time for her to get started. Looking back, I’m not sure why we were in such a hurry. It actually didn’t go all that well. We bought her a pink soccer ball, but she was really proud of it and wouldn’t put it down and kick it to another kid. So, at four, we put her in t-ball. Watching a team of four year olds trying to grasp the concept of baseball while also learning to throw and catch and bat is, in a word, hilarious. Very slow moving, but very entertaining. But she hated it. We were a little perplexed. A girl was a new thing. Of course she would play sports. What else was there? She came up with dance herself, which we — especially my husband — were surprised at. But she took to it like a duck to water. By her last year in high school she was teaching younger girls and dancing in the studio’s senior company. By that time, the boys were out on their own. One of them played baseball — rec, travel, and varsity in high school, with a smattering of football in there. The other played soccer as goalie, again at rec, travel, and varsity in high school. Also with the same smattering of football. I can’t even begin to go into how much playing sports did for our boys. Skills, strategy, fitness, teambuilding, and friendships. There’s no room here anyway. But in the end, dance did the same things for my daughter. But in high school, sports did end up playing into her life. She became a fan. She attended most of the football

I’m not sure she knew a lot about the sport, but she was there cheering all the same. When kids aren’t in school, they lose so much, so many experiences. Academics, of course, but so much more: socialization, extracurriculars, new friends, and new romances as they grow and try to figure out who they are. But I think the loss of sports is especially important, because it touches kids on so many levels. Sports don’t just benefit the athletes. It brings communities together. All the games, especially at the high school level, have real fans from the community — not just relatives — cheering on the sidelines. For all these reasons, I really hope that we can safely get back to normal — a real normal — very soon.

e run our “Best of Fauquier” competition every year, but this year is special: our businesses are struggling to stay open more than ever before. To maintain our local businesses and community, we must support them, and if the turnout from this year’s competition is any indication, I think most Fauquier residents feel that way too. Eight thousand and thirty seven people took the time to come to our website and vote, casting 49,465 votes in total. That’s a lot of people who cared for their favorite businesses and took the time to go and vote. Many many thanks to all the businesses in the county, and thank you, Fauquier County, for supporting them!

WERE YOU SURPRISED BY YOUR BEST OF WIN? WHY OR WHY NOT? HAVE YOU WON PREVIOUSLY? I was surprised; I’ve been so busy with the COVID I never even gave it a thought. It was a delightful surprise that I think will make the staff happy because I attribute it greatly to their efforts, particularly the urgent care staff. I also think our visibility increased lately because the COVID testing we are doing caught everybody’s attention. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON READERS LOVE YOUR BUSINESS ENOUGH TO VOTE IT BEST OF? I think it’s the personality of the providers, to be honest. I feel very fortunate. I’ve got the greatest respect for our doctors, we have a really great group with a lot of experience. And we love it that we have a great connection to our patients through the community. Most of us live here in Fauquier County, and even those who don’t still really feel like they’re part of our community.

And, with the support of the community, look what we’ve grown into, how many people are associated with us. The people around here are great people, from all walks of life. Everybody’s got something to add, something to contribute. They’re taking care of us, and we are taking care of them. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? I’d just like to again express my immense appreciation for my staff. This is a unique situation that’s exceedingly stressful and they are stepping up in a big way.

VERTICAL ROCK BY HANNAH SAMLALL
I
f you’ve ever driven down Route 28 in Nokesville, you may have noticed a large, but unassuming building sitting back a bit from the road. From the outside, you’d have no idea that this building houses a massive rock climbing gym and fitness center. For over ten years, Ian and Lindsay Colton have shared their passion for rock climbing with the community, while at the same time working to create an environment that is welcoming to those of all ages, backgrounds, and skill sets. “We started [the gym] based on our passion for climbing,” Ian said. “We came across this building and thought what an awesome, untapped market. The building is 50 feet high, open, and it made for the perfect place for an indoor climbing gym.” Vertical Rock offers a wide variety of programming, including indoor climbing lessons, yoga classes, krav maga, outdoor climbing instruction and expeditions, and more. “We offer all sorts of programs from beginner to expert, as well as all ages,” Ian said. “We can get anybody climbing depending on where they want to go with it. We’ve watched kids grow up through our programs and become part of the family we have here. We love that it’s a fun, family activity that’s fitness-oriented at the same time.” It’s also great that those of us in less than perfect shape can try it. “People might feel they have to be at a certain physical level to start. The truth is that there’s the ability to progress here. If you’re interested in trying, we encourage you to try,” Ian said. “There’s a
34
{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |
grade system that’s implemented so you can climb easier routes and progress to the more difficult climbs. We encourage you to start where you’re comfortable and push to where you feel you can’t go any further. Next time, try a little harder or get a little higher up on the climb. As you get into the sport, you’ll realize you have the ability to control the amount of endurance you put into it.” Their prime location also allows them the unique opportunity to offer outdoor climbing in scenic areas like Talking Headwall and Buzzard Rocks which are within an hour radius of the gym. The Coltons are particularly passionate about sharing outdoor climbing experiences with the Vertical Rock community. That is, after all, where their true love of climbing lies. “We have permits and our guides are licensed to take people to these places with amazing climbing views,” Ian said. “We love when people come to climb indoors as a family, but if the kids want to get outside, we can make that happen. It doesn’t matter where you are skill-wise, we can handle it.” You can think of the Vertical Rock community as multi-faceted fitness. “We offer many of the same services as a big gym, but a lot of people want something different in their workout routines,” Ian said. In addition to being a fitness center, Ian and Lindsay

}
pride themselves on having created a family at Vertical Rock. “People make lifelong friends here. We’ve had people meet their significant others, and even get married here.” When they talk about a tight-knit and passionate community of rock climbers, they mean it. Even their staff is composed of rock climbers. This aspect was especially important to the Coltons as they worked to create this positive and upbeat community. “People that come to work with us have a true passion for rock climbing. We don’t care if they’re the best rock climber out there,” Ian said. “We can teach that, but we care that they care about what they’re doing. They’re not just punching the clock; they want to be a member of the community and part of the team.” At the end of the day, Lindsay and Ian see this as so much more than a rock climbing gym and fitness center. They see it as a place where you can walk in and immediately feel lifted up by the positivity in the room. “The by-product of being here is improved mental health,” Ian said. “I’ve watched as so many people transform their physical health, that they also feel better mentally.” With 50-foot indoor ceilings and endless outdoor opportunities, the sky really is the limit at Vertical Rock. Set up for Success
Through its four outreach programs, Community Touch, Inc. gives clients a head start toward a higher quality of life.

nyone can need help at certain points in their life. Disasters, small and large, can happen and change lives drastically. Community Touch is ready to help when that happens. “Some people have been very successful in the past and something unexpected and catastrophic just happened. Someone from their family got sick, or maybe they went through a separation with a spouse. We have an array of families from all different walks of life,” said Felicia Champion. Felicia and her husband Tyronne are the founders of Community Touch, a charitable organization in Bealeton that has grown, expanded, and evolved through the last 20 years into an impressive aid organization to meet the changing requirements of those in need in the community. It all started in 1998 when Tyronne and Felicia made the decision to Tyronne and Felicia Champion renovate several dormant buildings that sat on 20 acres of the True Deliverance Church of God Ministries’ property in Bealeton. Their vision, at the time, was simple: to help the community. Now, almost 20 years later, the number of individuals and families from all over Fauquier and the neighboring counties Community Touch has helped totals in the thousands. Constantly interacting with and analyzing the community closely, they added more programs over time, increasing their services to address additional problems.

The first order of business, they found, was to address food insufficiency. In 2001, they went door-to-door in order to survey the community and find out what was needed most urgently. That survey resulted in the opening of Clara’s Faith House Food Pantry. Through the Pantry, donated food from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, supermarkets, wholesalers, and local farmers is distributed to those who need it in Fauquier County and the surrounding areas. It is an ongoing need; recently, due to the pandemic, their food output has increased by 75 percent.
Housing
Analyzing the community, it was clear that the next need they would need to fulfill would be a transitional housing option. In May of 2003, they opened up the Victory Transitional Housing which has the capacity to house 40 people. “Families can stay up to a year and the majority of them do,” Felicia Champion said. “It makes sense for them for them to stay the entire year so that they can pay off debt, save up, and overcome all of those barriers that would prevent them from finding permanent housing.”
Life skills
In addition to offering a home to those who stay at Victory
Transitional Housing, Community Touch offers life skills, as well. “Some young people who come to us have never balanced a checkbook,” Felicia said. “We want to help,” Tyronne said. “We’re about self sufficiency. We want people to be stable after they leave and be able to hold their own weight in society. We look at their goals and make sure they’ll be set up for success.” They offer one-on-one financial mentoring and they have a case manager who will create a plan for them when they leave.
Financial Support
Their organization can help initially with financial support, as well, when it comes to putting down a security deposit and first month’s rent, depending on the individual’s need. “We work with landlords to give them the opportunity to have another chance,” Felicia said.
Affordable Necessities
A little over a year later in October of 2004, they opened Noah’s Ark in Bealeton in order to provide free clothing, furniture, and household items to qualified low-income local community members who were in need of

very much a part of this community and we are all working together to help those in need. If we can’t help with something, we can help you find someone who can.” When it comes down to it, Tyronne and Felicia want the community to know that they are here to help. “We want to help and it doesn't matter who you are,” Tyronne said. “If you lost your job, got laid off, no matter what, we’re here to help and to help change lives.”
assistance. With the growing needs of the county in mind, they opened Noah’s Ark Thrift Store in Marshall in September of 2008 in an effort to also meet the needs of low to middle income families who needed to be able to purchase those items affordably.
Child Care
Most recently, Community Touch opened a daycare and preschool in 2016. “We originally opened it to help with families in transitional housing who couldn’t afford childcare, and it blossomed,” Felicia said. “It’s now open to the community.” The daycare, now known as Caring For Angels, offers

a preschool program as well. In order to serve as many people in need as possible, Community Touch partners with other organizations like the Department of Social Services (DSS), the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), and many more. “We’re not a standalone,” Felicia said. “We’re
If you’d like to contribute to Community Touch, financial donations would be appreciated. “Food is definitely a need right now. We are also helping people who have been laid off due to COVID-19,” Tyronne said. “The Foundation of Blue Ridge Orthopaedics has been amazing. They did an online food campaign and have been sending us food for months now. We are also looking to purchase property in order to support families in need of housing long-term, rather than just one year. That way, they can have their independence but have our support as well.” Noah’s Ark Thrift store is also in need of slightly used furniture, appliances, household items, and clothing. For more information on Community Touch, you can visit their website at CommunityTouchInc.org or you can contact them by phone at 540-439-9300 or by email at info@communitytouchinc.org. ❖

Taking Junk to a New Level Recycling and upcycling at Remix Market of Warrenton BY AMANDA M. SOCCI
S
erving the community since January 2019, The Junkluggers of Gainesville offers junk removal as an eco friendly service to help customers clear homes, basements, garages, and offices of unwanted items and clutter that can overwhelm people both physically and mentally. Their easily recognizable large, neon green trucks are a familiar sight on the roads of northern Virginia. What separates Junkluggers from other junk removal services? With Junkluggers, the clutter is not just on a one way trip to the landfill. With the goal of reducing the volume of junk that ends up in our landfills, everything they pick up is evaluated for repair, recycle, donation, or upcycling opportunities before being deemed actual trash. Mark Harrington from Haymarket opened his franchise after specializing in business development in information technology for 20 years. “I grew bored. I took time off to investigate different business models, never intending to go into the junk business. It was recession-proof … we are a country of excess,” explained Harrington on why junk removal was the best business to get into. Impressed with all aspects of Connecticutbased The Junkluggers and particularly moved by its commitment to charitable causes, Harrington selected Mikey’s Way Foundation and Inova Children’s Hospital as the two main nonprofits to benefit from Junkluggers’ work in this community. Picking up junk is an easy job that is priced on the volume of the pickup. Not as easy is figuring out what happens to the junk once Junkluggers picks up. Harrington has several options and engages in higher-order thinking with his staff to come up with the best disposal solution. Should they donate the junk to a deserving community partner who can breathe new life into unwanted goods? Should they responsibly recycle items at state-commissioned environment

transfer stations when the useful life of junk has dried up? The answer depends on a lot of factors, including whether an item is broken, damaged or has missing parts, to name a few. With his main goal for Junkluggers to send the least amount of junk to the landfills by recycling and donating most items, Harrington began adding a third component to his junk disposal process earlier this year. He started dipping his entrepreneurial spirit in the art of upcycling and turning garbage-

bound items into beautiful and functional décor. Now, anything Junkluggers picks up may be donated, recycled, or potentially deconstructed and rebuilt into exciting new furnishings for home and office spaces. Using the same analytical skills in determining the fate of junk picked up by Junkluggers, Harrington expanded his business with a retail store to sell upcycled items as the next logical step in the junk removal business. In April 2020, just as the nationwide pandemic began forcing business

Below: The featured artist for the month of July, Julie Abrell, demonstrates oyster decoupage techniques to a group of children who registered to take a creative workshop at Remix. closures and causing people to stay home, Harrington quietly opened sister company, the Remix Market of Warrenton, to sell many of the unique castoffs picked up by his Junkluggers staff. “We took an empty shell and wanted a rustic vibe … we wanted a fun and eclectic place that people wanted to come to,” beamed Harrington in describing the process of renovating a large empty warehouse space and converting it into a barn-like 5,000 square-foot visual display of refurbished furniture pieces and new creations made from junk. Eclectic indeed. As you walk into The Remix Market on the far left of the store is the charming vinyl room, an enclosed space containing vinyl records, just some of many unusual items picked up by Junkluggers. The wide-open space features a hodgepodge of large junk and upcycled pieces treated with fresh paint and new ideas. The tables, curio cabinets, chairs, and other furniture are angled carefully, allowing narrow paths for customers to browse, touch, and admire the craftsmanship and creativity used to embellish the junk. To the far right is a small open space dedicated to the workshops. The back of the store is closed to the public, allowing Remix staff ample space to work their upcycling magic.

Surprisingly, the relationship-focused Harrington who had trained himself to favor people over things became a DIYer, literally getting his hands dirty as he taught himself to use power tools, cut, disassemble, and construct new things out of old junk. With no background in design or previous experience working with art, Harrington became an excellent chief of staff responsible for making upcycling the focal point of Remix. However, Harrington is quick to give credit to others before himself. He hired Meghan O’Toole to manage Remix and frequently depends on her artistic eye to gauge which items should be upcycled and to what degree. Harrington also believes strongly in community involvement, ensuring that everything he does with Junkluggers and Remix benefits his local community in some way. For example, Remix hires local artists to share their talents

by offering workshops. Each month, a different featured artist teaches children and adults how to upcycle items by adding new, colorful elements to things that would be normally thrown away. Harrington feels proud to receive great feedback from the community about the work he is doing with Junkluggers. “People are receptive. They accumulate stuff over time. They feel refreshed [to get junk out of their homes]. Their stuff is treated the right way,” he noted. Now with the Remix Market open to the public, Harrington is even more excited about the future of junk. He has lofty goals to continue his mission to reduce landfill waste by increasing the quantity of things to upcycle and sell. And he’s not stopping there. With the goal of benefiting the community always in mind, his next big project is to build planter beds in the back of Remix, hire a master gardener to help plant crops, and donate the yield to local food pantries after harvest. What will he imagine next? ❖

DECLUTTERING YOUR DIGITAL WORLD

Creating order in your computer BY KLAUS FUECHSEL

orking on organizing and decluttering your home can make you feel great and truly transform your living space. But, in the twenty-first century, that is not everything. It seems that half our life is not actually in our physical surroundings; we spend a lot of time in the digital world. So having a cluttered, disorganized computer, no matter how pristine and minimalistic your office is, may make you just as anxious and stressed. Psychologically, it can be just as frustrating not being able to locate a certain file on your computer as it is to not be able to find your shoes. Here are some of Dok’s best practices for keeping your digital life organized and functioning smoothly.
Your Desktop The first thing you see after logging into your computer is your desktop screen, so let’s start there. While you’re working, it’s easy to fill your screen with all kinds of icons, photos, and other stuff, which means locating what you need more difficult. If you really prefer to open a certain file by clicking on a
44
{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |
desktop icon, you should create a “shortcut.” This means that the actual file is still stored in its folder on your hard drive, but the icon on the desktop acts as a link and gives you a quick way to locate and open it. Your desktop should consist mainly of shortcuts grouped by file type, importance or subject. Another way to locate a file quickly is to search for it using the computer’s search feature. So think ahead when you are naming your documents: short, memorable, and easily searchable names are ideal. Avoid using special characters, which may confuse some programs, with the exception of the underline (“_”).
Photos Photos can be a nightmare to organize. Some clients have over 100,000 photos on their computer. With this volume, creating folders for each year is not sufficient. It might be better to organize them by events within a year. So your Photos folder will have subfolders for years, and then subfolders with the year folder for each event. Programs like ADSee and other Photo Manager softwares might come in handy. Some allow you to “metatag” photos, making them searchable. Some metatags are
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
It’s just a fact in the twenty-first century that you will have many usernames and passwords to remember to access all your online accounts. Many people save their logins and passwords in their browser, enabling them one-click access to their accounts. While handy, it makes the information very easy to forget. But problems can arise: your computer system may crash, your browser may have a glitch, you may purchase a new computer, or you may need to use another computer while traveling. At some point you may need tech support to rebuild or fix something. Then, forgotten logins become a very large problem. So be extremely vigilant in recording and updating your login information (including the answers to the security questions) in a safe place (not on your computer or in online storage accounts!) So, yes, write them down on an actual piece of paper. With a pen. And update them constantly. This will also enable family members to access accounts in an emergency.
}
You can save money by checking your subscriptions often. Keep track of them and check your credit card statements every month. I often see cases where someone is still paying for an Antivirus subscription they haven’t used for years through auto renewal. I’ve seen people who still pay for AOL dial-up services to maintain their email address without realizing that it’s actually free. Companies bank on (and make a lot of money) on you forgetting about the auto renewal.
Trash and Downloads The “recycling” or “trash bin” is a place on your hard drive where deleted files are stored. Once in a while you should check the recycling bin and empty it, because those files are still taking up space on your hard drive. Also, whenever you download files/programs, they are stored in your “Downloads” directory. Make it a habit to organize and save downloaded files right away. Then empty your downloads folder periodically, because those files are also taking up space on your computer. If you have made a habit of filing important files right away, you can then do this without being afraid of accidentally deleting something you need. Periodically you should also remove temporary files created by your operating system or browsers. Even after they are no longer needed, they remain in your system. But that is a big subject that needs another article to explain fully. And, as always, backup, backup, backup. ❖

Coping with Covid The key to managing difficult emotions in uncertain times
M
any of us have a default way of dealing with intense emotions which are often associated with stressful times. Living through a pandemic definitely qualifies as a stressful time. Unless you are over 102 years of age, you have not experienced a pandemic such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Consider the unforeseen changes we have had to adjust to in the last few months: quarantine, teleworking, unemployment, managing health concerns, distance learning, and wearing masks. In the beginning of the “stay-athome order,” there was much adjustment, fear, and uncertainty. Slowly, many of us have had to reconfigure our lives to adjust to the new normal. Dealing with COVID-19 has proven to be stressful for many people. Anxiety and fear can cause strong emotions in adults and children leading to changes in sleep or eating patterns, worsening of chronic physical and mental health problems, self-medicating through tobacco, alcohol or other substances, obsessing over our personal health or the health of family, or lashing out at loved ones. Many are facing a mental health fall-out, including stress, depression, insomnia, irritability, anger, fear, boredom, and frustration. Unfortunately, many of us were forced to withdraw from friends and family due to our concerns over catching or spreading the virus. Many embraced technology such as FaceTime and Zoom to connect with loved ones, but it’s not the same as visiting in person. As humans, social connection is a crucial component of our emotional well-being. Social distancing, self-isolation, and travel restrictions have left many with a feeling of sadness. Often, an emotion can be so low-grade that it is difficult to detect. Over a period of time, even a low-grade emotion can have far-reaching effects on our emotional and physical health as well as our relationships. On the other hand, one of the most difficult challenges is to adjust to the diminished availability of personal, emotional, and physical space. Some find it challenging being confined to their home with family members, even if relations were favorable prior to COVID-19. Most of us had a healthy amount of space built into our relationships through work, school, and other commitments, which is now absent. How are you coping with these changes?
If you had healthy coping mechanisms before the pandemic, then you may be doing okay by instinctively using techniques that you have successfully used in the past. We tend to fall back to these familiar patterns of behavior when stressed. For example, I focus on sleeping well, exercise, good nutrition, sticking to a routine, and other forms of self-care when experiencing stress. Self-care, both physical and emotional, is a priority for me and I have raised my children to appropriately navigate their life’s challenges using healthy coping mechanisms. This is the foundation for building resiliency in ourselves and our children. However, if you do not cope well with stress or if you have a mental or physical health condition, you may be struggling. There is only so much stress and uncertainty that we are able to sustain. Dealing with any crisis well requires self-awareness, intentionality, and self-control. We possess the ability to control our thoughts which impact our emotions. I won’t say this is easy — many solutions are simple, yet difficult to implement. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a common therapy technique which trains the mind to have better control over one’s thoughts. Our thoughts lead to our emotions and our emotions affect our behavior. It is tremendously important to focus on hope, which is a highly contagious emotion that will also spread to those around you. During any crisis we can intentionally focus on something positive in our lives, and we can all find something positive. The Chinese word for crisis means both danger and opportunity — a reminder to look at the situation objectively. Many parents ask how they can best help their children to cope with uncertainty and fear. Children rely on their parents for both physical and emotional safety. Using a calm voice, reassure your children that you will get through this together. The old saying “more is caught than taught” definitely applies here. Our children watch us closely and if we manifest fear, they are likely feeling fearful. I have recommended to many parents and children that they stop absorbing so much information about the pandemic. Too much information can be toxic. Also, the understanding that visual cues, which can also be a factor contributing to fear, can be valuable in understanding and coping with your emotions. We are not accustomed to seeing people wear masks wherever we go. Even if you are not consciously concerned, there is a powerful message sent to your subconscious when you take in this imagery (such as a person wearing a mask). This message is one of fear, and fear is a highly contagious emotion. Understanding and learning how to effectively cope with your emotions will strengthen you, your loved ones, and your community. Together, we will get through this pandemic. ❖

Smiling Through the Pandemic: and daily updates on the ongoing impact of COVID-19, burying your head and mouth in the sand is not the answer. Viral particles migrate easily to the lungs through the nose and mouth. Wearing a mask will promote the reduction of these particles health experts state, and can protect your mouth from invasion. Your mouth is a part of your body and you must never forget this fact. Your mouth is like I-66—it is a wide highway that leads to other places in the body. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT NOW TO SEE YOUR DENTIST
3 Steps to COVID-Proof Your Mouth BY DR. TONTRA LOWE
U
nless you have been in a deep sleep for the last seven months, you know that the world has changed due to the COVID-19 virus. Did you know that according to published statistics over 18 million people have contracted the virus with over 600,000 deaths word-wide according to Johns Hopkins University? Research has shown that most deaths are among people with underlying medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. All of these medical conditions also have a love-hate relationship with your mouth. Never fret though! Using three simple tips can keep you smiling through the pandemic while keeping your teeth and gums healthy. LISTEN TO THE HEALTH EXPERTS
It is hard to make informed decisions about your oral health without adequate information. With tons of stats
With office closures for emergency treatment only from March-May for dental offices in Virginia, there is a huge backlog of patients that did not have their normal hygiene cleaning appointments, and those who were scheduled for traditional treatment. Additionally, lots of staff at dental offices did not return due to child-care issues, medical conditions, taking care of other family members, or other personal reasons. It will take months to catch up with patient care. It is paramount that you reschedule your appointments now and keep your appointment. Bleeding gums and gingivitis before have now turned into incurable gum disease. Small cavities are now large cavities and require crowns and cause pain. Call your dental office today and make your appointment even if it is weeks away. MAXIMIZE YOUR BENEFITS
Employers may modify future benefits due to the costs surrounding staying open at this time. You must maximize any benefits you have now. Since some people may see the dentist for their regular cleanings only once this year due to COVID-19 closings, call your insurance carrier and request to have all of your benefits restored. Ask them to waive the time limit clause in light of the pandemic. You can also reach out to your HR representative to assist. Regular professional cleanings, exams, and x-rays can help keep your teeth shiny and your gums healthy to help COVID-proof your mouth. With or without dental insurance, the health of your body depends a lot on the health of your mouth. During this pandemic, it is even more important to understand how the virus can attack your mouth and cause worsening conditions. Call your dentist today to protect your overall health and ensure you keep smiling through the pandemic. Your lungs, heart, brain, and kidneys will thank you. ❖

Keep on Learning...
The logistics of educating Fauquier County’s students virtually
I
n March of 2020, the whole world was blindsided by the COVID pandemic. Due to the isolation safety measures that have followed, everyone turned to the internet for work, socialization, and recreation as person to person interaction almost disappeared. While living in a completely virtual world certainly has its disadvantages, we can be glad that at least we have the technology that can sometimes somewhat mitigate the effects of isolation that can be, in some cases, drastic. Technology cannot solve some of the critical problems that isolation presents to our school-age children — the losses of socialization, personal interaction, extracurricular activities, sports, and sense of community — but it may be able to be used to salvage some of the academics. Fauquier County Public Schools teachers and staff are working hard to make this
50
{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |
happen as quickly and as simply as possible for our students. While teachers were developing creative lesson plans that would still engage students when delivered virtually, and so many others were addressing the mind-boggling number of other related issues, the technology team at FCPS tackled the most basic problem: getting internet and devices into the hands of students who needed them. These efforts, and others, continue as the schools look forward to the coming fall semester. Louis McDonald, Director of Technology Services at Fauquier County Public Schools, spoke to us at length about how the schools are addressing — and, in some cases, solving — these challenges. Lifestyle: Can you give me an overview of the logistics of continuing education virtually? McDonald: Classroom content will be made available in a digital

format that can be downloaded, as well as available as a paper packet if the student’s access to the internet is limited or nonexistent. Students will engage in a combination of synchronous (at a set time and day on a schedule, as would happen in a regular school day) and asynchronous (within a given time frame, but not at the same time) learning experiences. The video sessions can be recorded and provided for download or streamed for later review. Our learning management environment allows for offline work by students that can be uploaded later for review by the instructor. Instructional staff is intensely working to develop materials that support their students. Having to consider each student’s digital limitations (e.g. internet, device capability) while developing lesson plans is a challenge that can push the creativity envelope. Lifestyle: Do you expect, and did you have in the spring, any technical glitches with the online system? Did any students have difficulty accessing what they needed to? Was there a need for technical support? McDonald: During the spring and summer sessions, we did establish a support line for students. Members of the technology team, who were also supporting staff, checked the email and voicemail regularly and resolved any issues. We only received about a dozen issues submitted to the support line. It is possible that students may have also reached out directly to their teachers if they were having issues (e.g. I am having difficulty downloading the document). Lifestyle: How many students in Fauquier do you estimate don’t have the technology or internet access needed? McDonald: Data from The Center for Internet as Infrastructure (i3connect.org), indicates about 8 percent of our county population does not
have a computer, which could translate to over 800 students. When it comes to the internet, I3 shows 12 percent of our county population is without access, which translates to approximately 1,300 students. That number would be slightly lower if you assessed this by household instead of individual students, considering multiple students could belong to the same family. Lifestyle: The PATH foundation worked to provide — and is still supporting — wireless hotspots to the more remote areas. Did that work well? Was it enough? McDonald: The county’s partnership with the PATH Foundation to provide its citizens with access to the internet in needed areas of the county is greatly appreciated. This service, along with our deployment of 10 buses outfitted with hotspots and access to 250 personal hotspot devices available for check-out from FCPS, provided our students the opportunity to access the internet when needed. The hotspots enabled students to access the internet to download materials/upload completed assignments, but most of the work itself could be done offline at home. Internet research or tasks that require longer time online would involve more time parked at the spot. Students could also use these hotspots to check in with their teacher with perhaps a short video chat. Our bus hotspots had various levels of activity and the County-provided locations, in our testing, appeared to perform well. One item to note is that the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) does require FCPS to block students' access to content that could be harmful to minors, which is implemented in the personal hotspots and the bus hotspots provided by the schools. The hotspots provided by the county are not required to perform content filtering. Lifestyle: In the spring, the
schools were able to provide devices to some of the students who needed them. How many were you able to distribute? How are you approaching that for the coming school year? McDonald: This spring, with the goal of providing every family in need with one Chromebook, our inventory enabled us to help about 500 students. For the fall, the challenge is greater. We have a current inventory of approximately 3,000 Chromebooks. We have an additional 7,400 on order, but there is no estimate on delivery due to the impacted supply chain. As in the spring, we would revisit requests for multiple devices per household only if there was any inventory remaining. Just like hotspots, our Chromebooks have content filtering enabled when they access the internet. Lifestyle: In a perfect world, every student would have a laptop or ipad for educational purposes. Is that a realistic dream for Fauquier County? McDonald: It is a goal that we would hope to achieve. Currently, funding for student computers in the schools comes from the Commonwealth’s SOL Technology Initiative. Prior to COVID-19, we were working towards the goal of achieving a student to computer ratio of 1:1 in all three county high schools over the next year. Federal funding associated with COVID-19 has given us the opportunity to accelerate this at the high school level, and we look towards achieving this ratio to other grade levels in the future. Our price point for a Chromebook is $350. This includes the cost for the Google management license, a four-year onsite warranty support, protective cover, and setup/delivery. Using 11,000 as a student population, the estimated purchase price is almost $3.9 million if we were to provide all students a new Chromebook at the same time. There are additional expenses associated with support such as parts and
content filtering that could total about $150,000 per year. Lifestyle: The questions I’m asking are mostly about problems and challenges. Tell me something positive. What are the silver linings hiding in this situation? McDonald: From technology’s perspective, the pandemic has brought to the forefront the digital equity gap, highlighting the limit or lack of access to the internet for students. Numerous national educational organizations (e.g. ISTE, CoSN) have been lobbying Congress to provide more funding to close the gap. This movement could benefit localities who are hoping to expand the internet footprint in their county. Another popular discussion is how the pandemic might reinvent education. Instructional staff are being challenged to be creative in how to deliver content in a non-traditional classroom where the usual interpersonal techniques are not available. Our staff will have learned so much from this situation: new teaching techniques, new ways of helping students learn, and a growth mindset. This insight can be helpful in supporting our students in their learning journey when we are able to return to a traditional classroom setting. Lifestyle: Is there anything else you'd like the community to know? McDonald: During this time, our staff, both instructional and non-instructional, have stepped up to the challenge posed by this crisis. In the spring, we were suddenly blindsided by a situation that required many people to quickly adapt their work style. Students and families have also had to think outside the box and change their mindset to work and learn in this new world. The solution wasn’t perfect in its implementation, but we continue to gather information and adjust our operational model. When we return to a form of normal, what we have learned during this time will hopefully have a positive impact on our path forward.

The absence of team sports has far-reaching repercussions, and not just for the athletes. BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
A
s we head into our Fall 2020 semester, we know that distance learning, which will keep our kids and community healthy, will have repercussions on many levels. The primary concern, of course, is academics, but that is not all there is to school. Among all the other factors, sports comes in a very close second. The benefits — on the athletes, the student body, and the community — are immeasurable for so many reasons. The Athletic Directors and Athletic Trainers at Fauquier County Public Schools

are facing an almost impossible task: maximizing the sports experience while also minimizing the risks. Some very hard work over the summer has put a workable plan into play. While it may need to be adjusted if the situation changes, the athletic staff are doing the very best they can to give the kids as much as they can. We interviewed Bryan Grimley, Athletic Trainer at Fauquier High School. In his 13th year in this role and also as a Physical Education teacher, he has worked with

students from grades 9 to 12 and has a unique and knowledgeable perspective on this issue.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF THE ABSENCE OF SPORTS ACTIVITIES?
We have seen that already. This spring, our athletes had their season taken away before it really got started. This was devastating to them, especially students who were applying for sports scholarships. To see the faces of our seniors and hear the anger and sadness in their voices — it was awful. It hurt.

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC BENEFITS IN SPORTS PARTICIPATION FOR CHILDREN? TIME MANAGEMENT Athletes must learn to balance their school work with athletic responsibilities and other commitments like work, chores, home life, friends, family, etc. TEAMWORK Athletes learn how to be a part of something that is bigger than just them, and to work with others. They learn to appreciate the value of their individual effort contributing to a bigger, collaborative, team effort. You may not always like your teammates, but at the end of the day, they are your team and you learn to work together. RELATIONSHIPS
The kids miss being together, and unfortunately that’s one of the hardest things for them right now, just not being able to be with their buddies. That lack of socialization is so damaging, and not just to the sports community. There’s so much to be lost. Athletes are not the only ones affected by not having sports. Families, friends, classmates, coaches, and other enthusiastic and supportive sports fans in the community are disappointed too. Sports are something a
lot of kids can get behind one way or another, whether it’s actually playing, or cheering at the games. It really builds a school and brings the whole community closer together. All of the coaches talk about how much we miss the kids. I went to go home yesterday and it was 2:30, while I’m used to being here until 7. And I was thinking, it’s really hot; I would have had to modify practice to be safe and avoid the kids overheating. But there’s no one here. We

miss them as much as they miss being here, for sure.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF THE MISSED FITNESS AND SKILLS TRAINING ON ATHLETES?
HOW DID FCPS PLAN TO PROCEED WITH SPORTS ACTIVITIES GOING INTO THE FALL SEMESTER?
The three High Schools, Kettle Run, Liberty, and Fauquier, worked together to put together a return plan. It was a very tedious and time-consuming process. We wanted to get it right. The three county Athletic Directors (Dean Spahr-LHS, Paul Frye-KRHS, Mark Ott-FHS) and the 4 county Athletic Trainers (Mandy CarterLHS, Natalie Campbell, Reylin MorganLHS and myself-FHS) all worked together to develop a return policy. Our procedures are based on best practices and current recommendations from the CDC, the VDH, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association

We expect deconditioning to be a factor at first. While some students may have been able to get out and exercise and keep up with their skills and strength, others were not. Some students went to work to help meet the needs of their families because their parents were furloughed or laid-off. Others became teachers and babysitters to younger siblings and neighbor children, etc. while schools and other care facilities were closed. Some kids joined Club or Rec teams just to help keep up their skills and their fitness level. Those teams are not governed by the VSL, so their restrictions are different. Some kids didn’t have the means to do that or there were other issues such as transportation. So they did as much as they could, when they could, however they could, to try to stay in shape.
(NATA), the NFHS, and the VHSL. I can tell you that it has the safety of our students and our staff at its core as we also try to do the best we can for our kids athletically and academically. We have embedded in our policy many safety and mitigation strategies to keep all participants safe.
HOW IS THAT PLAN WORKING OUT?
A primary focus of these initial conditioning and workout sessions is on individual skills and reconditioning. Again, it all comes down to safety; we want our kids to stay healthy, so we are going to have to take it slow. Depending on what stage we are in, the permitted activities vary. At stage 2, although it’s still very limited, we can do more: quarterbacks can throw to receivers, field hockey kids can pass balls, and baseball players can play catch. But everything must take place outside and follow covid protocols. Everyone still has to stay 10 feet apart, wear masks at all times, and bring their own water

bottles. Shared equipment is sanitized every 10-15 minutes. We are asking our coaches to consider the individual needs of all their athletes as they start training with their teams. Everybody’s doing their best. Coaches are communicating with their kids, and the kids and parents are doing a really great job being flexible and adjusting to the rules. It’s been — knock on wood — a smooth process, considering how hectic it might have been. I can’t say enough about the team of Athletic Directors and Athletic Trainers who worked on the return plan and are doing their best as we go into this fall semester. You know, on the field we’re opponents, but in reality, we are one team — we are like a little family. We worked really hard on this and I think it will show. I am proud to be a part of the FCPS Athletic Community, and we are all keeping our fingers crossed that spring sports will be on schedule. ❖

College Planning Today The world is changing. Should your education plans change with it?
BY GARY CARROLL
W
hy do you want to go to college? This is the first question that College Planning Specialist and Coach Luanne Lee asks potential college applicants when she first meets them at her office. Surprisingly, she often sees blank expressions and hears only silence or vague answers, even though the response to that question sets the stage for all other aspects of the college preparation process. Answering that question is the first step along a challenging and complicated road. Speaking honestly, many students would admit the social aspects of what used to be “college life” and the chance to be independent and away from home make college attractive. But in today’s Covid pandemic environment, socializing, sports, dorm life, even use of bathrooms and showers will have severe restrictions. Most universities will offer only limited classroom instruction, and distance learning—sometimes from home—will dominate. This changes the whole college experience, and may change the way students, parents, and potential employers, think about it. Rather than a life experience, it becomes strictly an academic activity. If the student already has a career in mind that requires a degree, of course, move ahead with the application process. But if a student does not have a specific goal in mind, it is prudent to
56
{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |
slow down and think a bit more. When parents or students seek Luanne’s assistance, she begins the process by testing students to determine what career to pursue. She uses a combination of three assessments for career, personality, and communication to help a student identify strengths in careers for which they are well suited. Luanne then helps parents to connect with the Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify the education/ training required. In many cases, attending college may not be the best choice. Luanne says that changes in the job market indicate that employers in many professions no longer see college as an essential prerequisite to hiring. In fact, in some cases colleges might even sidetrack students away from preparing to do the job for which they are best suited. Luanne notes that it appears the job market is starting to turn, as there seems to be a growing interest in job seekers pursuing trades. She encourages students with an aptitude for trade work to investigate careers that don’t require a college education but rather can be learned through apprenticeships, job shadowing, and technical training. Early school classroom closures in the spring have complicated the college application process. Many students were unable to take SATs and colleges have minimized or eliminated its role in the selection process, often substituting
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
FairTest.org. Normal support from students’ secondary schools, securing recommendations and proper application material, has been complicated as well. The two most important things potential applicants need to realize are that college today is big business and college is not for everyone. There is intense competition from both American and foreign students for the most prestigious schools. Even outstanding academic students may be disappointed to learn that their first college choice may not accept them. Universities today may not necessarily look for the most well-rounded student, but rather for those that will fill a niche that will make the entering class as a whole more diverse— meeting diversity criteria and foreign student goals, meeting athletic needs, as well as finding the very best academic students, etc. Moreover, the cost of college has dramatically increased in recent years. Students and their families could easily find themselves using savings or loans well above $100,000 to pay for four years of undergraduate studies, even at schools with relatively modest price tags. Students can apply for a federal student aid loan (FAFSA) in their own name, in which case the parent has no financial responsibility at all. FAFSA currently will provide $5,500 to a freshman, $6,500 for sophomores, and $7,500 for juniors and seniors. In addition, many private charitable organizations also award scholarships based on merit and financial need. Students from families who have an annual income of less than $24,000 are eligible for a Pell Grant of over $6,000— the only free federal money available. Luanne notes that students with financial needs should not rule out looking at schools outside of the state which may offer scholarships for their desired area of study. In many cases, it makes good financial sense for students to spend their first two years of undergraduate study at nearby community colleges (be sure to check that the credits earned there will transfer to the college of choice), rather than spend so much for a four-year college away from home. What Students and Parents Can Do Now: • Research trends in the potential job market • Research possible professions to determine their requirements • Decide whether college is right for the student • Develop a financial plan on how to pay for college or technical training ❖ LUANNE LEE YCPCOACH.COM • LUANNE@YCPCOACH.COM 70 MAIN STREET, #23, WARRENTON TO LEARN MORE ABOUT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AID, CONTACT FINANCIALAIDTOOLKIT.ED.GOV/TK

Library Provides Support to Student and Teachers in New School Year BY LISA PAVLOCK, PUBLIC INFORMATION COORDINATOR, FAUQUIER PUBLIC LIBRARY
A
new school year is usually marked by the purchase of backpacks, lunch boxes, pencils and notebooks. Children board school buses, eager to tackle new classes and reconnect with friends. College students move into dorms and experience newfound independence. That, of course, was before COVID-19. For most, the 2020 school year will be like no other. Rather than sitting in a classroom with their peers, the school day may take place at the kitchen table. Even some college students will be attending virtual classes from home. Amid the uncertainty of how the school year will play out – for children, parents and teachers – one thing is certain. As a community, we are called upon to provide support and resources to ensure academic success. Fauquier Public Library is ready to meet that challenge. “We like to say that the library has something for everyone and that is, indeed, true,” notes Maria Del Rosso, Library Director. “But during this unprecedented time we want to make sure that teachers and students know about the myriad of resources available to help with their

students’ needs.” On August 24, after five months of curbside service and remote-only access to library resources, Fauquier Public Library reopened its doors, with measures in place to protect both patron and staff safety. “The building may look different when you walk inside,” notes Del Rosso, “but our commitment to providing valuable services and resources to our community is unchanged.” Library cards are required to access the library’s traditional collection as well as the electronic and digital resources. “Over half of Fauquier County residents already have library cards,” said Del Rosso, “but we want to see that number grow.” To that end, the library has made it easier than ever to get a library card by accepting online library card applications. Applicants can apply online for temporary library card privileges at the Library’s website. In a few days, they will receive their permanent card by mail. With library card in hand, parents, teachers and students have access to dozens of free tools, many available online. Here are a few favorites:

DIVORCE MEDIATION, CONSULTATION AND REPRESENTATION
Whether this is your first foray into homeschooling or you are a seasoned educator preparing for your first “virtual” academic year, library resources can help you develop your curriculum and challenge students across a wide range of subject areas.
HOW MEDIATION WORKS
1. You decide to be in charge of the outcome of your own case instead of letting a Judge tell you what to do. 2. You or your lawyer contacts our mediation coordinator, Sharon Wiggins, who sends initial paperwork and sets up a pre-mediation conference call with Paul to ascertain the issues, schedule the date and place for the mediation and set ground rules. 3. Show up with an open mind and settle your case with Paul’s help. COST
Paul requires a $3500 deposit to be placed in a trust account and billed against. This fee is usually split between the parties. Paul bills at $350 per hour for mediation services. Most cases are successfully resolved in less than 8 hours.
Consultation & Representation If Mediation does not fit, Paul offers a one hour consultation about what you can expect under Virginia Law & with Divorce proceedings. Dancing Through Distance Learning Jen Perrius’s new program The Academy helps fill the critical need for childcare and education services while students are not in the classroom. STORY AND PHOTOS BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM
“[We], like every other family, were kind of in limbo and scared [about] what we were going to do with our kids,” says Jason Dearinger, parent of a Fauquier County student who, like so many others, will be taking on distance learning for the first time as the 2020-2021 school year begins. Jennifer Perrius, Warrenton resident and owner and director of Progressions Dance Studio, took notice of the families in town facing this challenge of balancing school, work and a myriad of other responsibilities and felt compelled to help fill the critical need for childcare and

education services. “After knowing Jenn and her family and her employees for the past two years, we had total faith and trust within her that she would take care of our kid,” says Dearinger. In a normal year, Perrius’s dance studio runs afternoon programming five to six days a week during the nine months that correlate with the school year. In 2017, Perrius created a nonprofit arm of her business – The Emily Jane Performing

Arts Program – in hopes of providing scholarships for under-resourced families to enroll their children into an arts program. Even prior to the nonprofit, Perrius herself had covered the tuition for a number of students to allow them to participate. Now, to help offset some stresses caused by effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Perrius is running an additional Monday through Friday daytime program – The Academy – that, along with dance lessons, also provides a constructive learning environment through access to tutors, STEM activities, art lessons, fitness classes, and more. To ensure safety, class sizes are kept small, all instructors and students have their temperature checked upon entering the building each morning, and all are required to wear a mask except when spaced six or more feet apart for physical activities. And, Perrius will continue to offer tuition assistance to some families that may not be able to afford full-time childcare so they have a safe and nurturing place for their kids to play and learn while undertaking distance learning. Perrius says that through her personal experience as a dancer and foster parent,

she is acutely aware of the fact that many times, when finances are tight, arts are the first to be cut. “But arts, especially for a kid that may be struggling at home, are a really great outlet that is [often] not afforded to them,” she asserts. According to the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network, studies show that Perrius is right about the benefits of arts education; it’s associated with increased socioemotional skills, as well as lower dropout rates and better academic outcomes – especially for at-risk students. These encouraging indicators represent what Perrius hopes to provide for the kids enrolled in The Academy. She says, “Even if [my students] are never going to be professional dancers, the discipline that is learned in being a part of these programs – and the camaraderie – you can apply that to anything that you want to do.” When it comes to the education portion of the program, Perrius predicts from her own experience with homeschooling that many of the kids may find distance learning to be very engaging, especially coupled with the tutoring services and activities that will be available through The Academy. “I know families are scared about the idea of their kids being virtually schooled,” she says, “but…they will develop such a curiosity for learning that [parents] will see the shift. And I’m excited for the kids to have that.”
64
{ SEPTEMBER 2020 |
In addition to the physical and mental benefits The Academy will provide for children, another advantage Perrius anticipates is the sense of normalcy and routine it will offer for the families. “If [the kids] are going to [The Academy] and getting their physical activity in, then they’ll have normal family time and normal dinnertime and normal bedtime instead of running, running, running,” she says. “I think something that the families will recognize is that it actually makes their lives calmer and benefits the whole family. I’m hoping that’s the culture that is developed.” And, Perrius hopes the tuition assistance program will be a gamechanger for those families in which parents are still required to

work and would otherwise have limited or no other care options for their children. “Some of the kids that we have in the program, their parents were feeling really hopeless,” she says. “So I feel really good knowing that, maybe it’s just five kids, but it’s five families that are no longer freaking out; that no longer have to quit their job or figure out how they’re going to feed their family or pay their rent or mortgage.” For anyone who meets Perrius, it’s abundantly clear that she is passionate about the well-being of the families and children of her community and is committed to putting that passion to practice through all aspects of her work; especially by growing and strengthening the Emily Jane Performing Arts Program. “If we have places for kids to be and give parents a break so they can work…and lessen their stress,” she says, “and their kids are being fed, both physically and mentally, then we can try and offset the potential of a lot of lost kids. That’s my real goal for the nonprofit.” ❖

Kindness Rocks
Brighten someone’s day with an inspirational note
STORY BY BEATRICE TAYLOR, ROCKS PAINTED BY SHARON MORRIS AND DIANA BEST
“I
see one, I see one!” cried the little girl as she ran to a bench on the Warrenton Branch Greenway that sat at the side of the paved path. She carefully picked up a brightly colored rock that had been left in the crook of the armrest where it might be discovered. “It’s pretty,“ said her mother. “This is the best one yet!” replied the child.

This mother and daughter are part of a growing population of people who have become involved in the Kindness Rock Project. Who paints these rocks and who are they for? How did this get started, and how can someone get involved in it? Sharon Morris of Warrenton has been painting rocks and leaving them for people to find for several years. We spoke with Ms. Morris to find out about the popularity of this inexpensive way of sharing kindness with those around us.
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
How did you get started painting rocks? Sharon: I saw an article on the Kindness Rocks Project and actually found my first rock in the summer of 2017 at Colonial Beach, Virginia. The project was started by Megan Murphy in 2015. She wrote, “You’ve got this!” on a rock and left it on a beach in Cape Cod. The response from a friend who found it was the beginning of her painting more rocks with inspirational messages. All you do is paint a positive message or something happy and put the rock out for others to find. The movement has now spread to the UK, Australia, New Zealand, as well as other countries. What are the steps to painting a Kindness Rock? Sharon: You can get your rocks from anywhere: in rivers, on the side of the road, or buy them at a local landscaping company. You’re not supposed to take them from state parks, and you should ask permission if you get them from a private property. Wash your rocks first and paint the top of the rock white so the colors will show up well. Use acrylic paints to make your design and then spray it with a clear topcoat for a protectant in case it rains so it won’t peel. I’ve seen two-year olds paint rocks and then parents write a word on it. You don’t have to be an artist! What do you do once your rock is painted? Sharon: Then put it somewhere in town where people will see it. It doesn’t have to be hidden. Parks are a good idea because it gets the family out. You find spots for them while you walk, and others will pick them up. I’ve even seen them in shopping centers or in Old Town Warrenton. I wouldn’t recommend putting them in a store though. I once saw a nice rock someone had left inside a store and

have been to twenty of them. Another group of rocks that I do are called, “Chubby Chicks.” These originated in Colonial Beach and have a beach theme. They have their own Facebook page. These rocks display a beach scene with an “unapologetic, confident woman” in a bathing suit and wearing a hat. They were so popular that there was a Chubby Chicks art show in Colonial Beach, and they have been written up in the Westmoreland Times as a rock to look for.
when I went back a couple of days later, there was a price tag of $3.99 on it! What if you find a rock while out walking? Sharon: You can keep it for yourself or you can hide it somewhere else for someone else to find. One person made a little rock garden with her found rocks. I encourage you to go to Facebook and locate the group associated with where you found it, such as Warrenton Virginia Rocks, Culpeper Rocks, Haymarket Rocks, or The Burg Rocks, which is for Fredericksburg. Almost every city in the U.S
has a Facebook group for painted rocks. Ours in Warrenton is Old Town Warrenton Rocks. That way the person who left it will know someone’s found it and enjoyed it. I understand that you do a couple of specialty rocks. Sharon: Yes. I do one group that is called Lois Rocks in memory of my sister. I take the rocks to as many of the LOVE signs in Virginia and take a picture of the rock with the sign. I post a picture of each place I go. There are more than 200 LOVE signs, and I

Why do you want people to know about Kindness Rocks now? People have been so stressed with Covid-19 and with having to stay in. Kids are home from school, and they are needing something to do. What is better than to share a little kindness during this stressful time? It gets the children and adults involved, gets them out into nature, and allows them to spend time doing something together. They leave inspirational messages, and I think people need it right now. I’m in the process of painting some now that will be ready in the next couple of weeks. You’ll have to see if you can find them! ❖

Bad Ass Pickles: a Fauquier Favorite MAKING PUNGENT PICKLES, FROM YUMMY HONEY TO HELLISHLY HOT BY GLENDA C. BOOTH

ourbon pickles, Taco pickles, Old Bay pickles, Swamp Venom pickles. There’s more: Bread and Butter, Ghost Pepper, and Carolina Reaper pickles. On many nights, after coming home from their regular jobs, Chris and Toni Sauder are up until 11 p.m. making crunchy, sweet, hot, spicy pickles. These are fresh, crunchy, homemade, pungent pickles. Their company, Bad Ass Pickles, has a following. Richard Maddox wrote on Facebook, “I have tried about six different types of pickles and they have all been delicious.” Jessica Stidham enthused, “We got two pints of the garlic pickles at Microfestivus and holy hell — they are the best pickles I’ve ever eaten! Can’t wait to get some more.” At a March Blue Toad Hard Cider tasting in Nelson County, one loyal customer drove for an hour and a half from Mineral, Virginia, to buy two quarts and another made a 30-mile trek from Staunton on a pickle purchasing mission. “It’s flattering,” comments Toni. The couple makes traditional, sweet Bread and Butter pickles, with onions, like Grandma made and sharp, deli-style dill pickles. Their most popular pickles are dill, Swamp Venom (Cajun flavored) and garlic. Then for the courageous gourmands, there’s the Ghost Pepper pickle which has a pork rub seasoning in the brine, the Sauders’ second hottest. Food & Wine describes a ghost pepper as a thumb-size, small red or orange chili pepper that is very hot. But even hotter is the Carolina Reaper, so hot that the picklers have to wear gloves to handle them.

The Sauders sell their pickles at Virginia beer fests, wineries, festivals, and farmers markets, including the Warrenton Farmers Market on Saturdays and Archwood Green Barn in The Plains on Sundays from April to November. They hope to sell through retail stores eventually.

The Start
A devoted beer festival adventurer, Chris saw people selling pickles at one. “We can do that,” he announced to Toni. Thus, Bad Ass Pickles was born in March 2019. They buy pickling cucumbers from local farms, mostly in Fauquier County. A pickling cucumber typically is crunchier and has a thinner skin and fewer seeds than the larger, eight-inch or so cukes found in typical groceries. In the summer, they also pickle habanero peppers that they buy from Virginia farmers. “We like to support locals,” explains Toni. Usually choosing one day of the week as their pickle-making day, they start by slicing the cukes into spears. It takes 45 minutes to slice a bushel. Then, they put the sliced

pieces in a five-gallon bucket, layer in spices and herbs, and pour on a hot brine. Then the whole mixture cools in the refrigerator. Most batches sit in the brine for a week. Traditional bread and butter pickles take two weeks to become infused with flavor. Spicy pickles can be ready in less time. In summer’s all-out, full-force, pickle-making mode, the Sauders usually go through 10 bushels of cucumbers a week, which can produce about 20 to 25 fivegallon buckets of pickles. Customers love Bad Ass pickles because, notes Toni, “They are so crunchy. We use a quarter-inch and crinkle cut to make them crunchy. Ours are crisp.” And she touts, they are much better than the mushier, storebought pickles. Their prices: half pints, $4; pints, $6; quarts, $12. Their current inventory and what goes into the brine is mouth watering and for some, tear inducing: Bread and Butter (three kinds, Jack Daniels bourbon; spicy; horseradish); Dill; Dill Horseradish; Everything Bagel (garlic, herbs, sesame seeds, poppy seeds); Garlic; Spicy Garlic; Taco (taco seasons, dill and garlic); Habanero (honey); Old Bay (Old Bay seasonings); Swamp Venom (Cajun style with spices from Dizzy Pig, a Manassas barbeque supply store); Ghost Pepper (ghost pepper pork rub); and their hottest, the Carolina Reaper (a red pepper which Guinness World Records dubbed the hottest chili pepper in the world). Until recently, the Sauders lived in Gainesville. Now they live in Front Royal. When not making pickles, Chris works for FedEx and Toni is in real estate. Chris’s son, Mason, pitches in too. The Sauders chose the company name, Bad Ass Pickles, “so people would remember us,” Toni chuckles. They are not in a pickle, but they are into pickles for sure. ❖ BADASSPICKLES.NET Photos courtesy of Christopher and Toni Sauder
