A
S I WATCHED MY SON play in his first professional football game as a Philadelphia Eagle, I thought to myself what an amazing time for me to be alive, healthy and fortunate enough to live to see my son live his dreams. When I think of the joy he has brought our family and the pulling together his activities has brought to us, I can’t help but smile.
What an amazing time for me to be alive, healthy and fortunate enough to live to see my son live his dreams. up and we couldn’t afford to call our family trips a vacation. It was just a trip back home to Memphis, Tenn and St. Louis, Mo. Now that my son has grown up and is living on his own (well kind of) my husband and I find more reasons to take trips. I sure wish my son could join us on many of our excursions, and discover more of the wonderful things our world has to offer. I truly believe that there is such constant wonderment and happiness associated with global travel and if we don’t seize the opportunity to see the world now, the world and all its
beauty mighty just pass us by. I look forward to each and every trip I take, and I love the idea of discovering new people, places and adventures. I really enjoy my moments, my space and my times on the road - alone and while with my husband. This past year I have taken trips domestic and abroad and every travel experience has been special to me. There have been beautiful moments shared with the environment and I have met strangers that I now refer to as friends. I have made an effort to enjoy and understand how really lucky I am to have a job like this. In this small yet powerful automotive magazine we desire to help you understand that the fine line between dreams and reality has just been erased.
The beauty of Travel & Auto is that it can inspire, rejuvenate, educate and stimulate whatever reality you’d like to experience. It can take you places that you desire to visit or it can help inspire your very next daydream. I hope you and your loved ones appreciate the magic of the automobiles, and destinations featured in this fall edition of Travel & Auto and I hope you will also take the time to enjoy every moment of your very own drive time experiences. Editor ’s Notes A Globally Diverse Collection of The Best
O
N THE FOLLOWING PAGES you’ll find a collection of some of the world’s best vehicles along with our spotlight on destinations wrapped in a single volume. Published four times a year we will represent a widely diverse lot of vehicles gathered from many manufacturers. They have one attribute in common: they all make extraordinary commitments to providing quality drive time experiences. Quality vehicles, fun drive time experiences, amenities and accommodations play the largest part in our selection process. We subscribe to and count on several excellent guides and to these experts we
entrust critical analysis. Our purpose is to simply single out the best vehicles, and then present them for your perusal, driving experience, trip planning convenience, and pleasure. While the world’s best loved vehicles may seem out of reach and out of touch or even relatively expensive to others, at least you can bet they reflect value. When choosing among the best however, value can be a highly subjective criterion. So, as Global One Travel & Auto continues to gains its audience, picks up speed and evolves into a great magazine; not just between these pages, but with all the new vehicles, Travel & Auto 3

What type of research should I do before I travel? Do some research, learn as much as you can about your destination. Check to see what type of weather the area has so you can plan accordingly. Check to see what type of paperwork and documentation you will need to travel. Find out what type of diseases are common to the area you’ll be visiting and take actions to prevent your exposure to those diseases. Check your own medical coverage to see what type of coverage you’ll have when away
from home. Consider purchasing trip insurance. If you plan on driving, get your car ready and investigate the local road conditions, laws and other driving requirements. Do some research about the costs of local items so you can set your budget. Don't forget to budget for taxes and tipping. Many governments charge high taxes for travel related services. Check the dates of local major holidays or festivals, since services may be limited on those dates.
PACKING TIPS What to consider when shopping for new luggage? by T’Juanna Winters *If you’re looking to buy new luggage, you should consider luggage with these features: *Retractable rollers, rollers make it easier to get through the airport. The retractable rollers, help keep the rollers from being pulled off. *Removable straps. Straps make luggage easier to carry, but they can get
caught on conveyor belts and either break or damage your luggage. *A lock, preferably one that doesn’t dangle off the luggage too much. *Carry-on luggage in a size that will be allowed under the recent more restrictive carry-on size limits.

LEXUS IS 250 and IS 350 Performance and Luxury In All New Designs by Ella Patterson
T
he Lexus IS will be all-new when it goes on sale this fall. The sporty entrylevel model from Toyota's premium brand promises excellent handling and an optional V6 that could deliver class-leading performance. The sleek new IS defines a new more energetic styling direction for Lexus. Its steeply raked windshield and splayed wheel arches contrast with a seamless sweep from hood to windscreen pillar, suggesting an advanced machine that is elegant and energetic at the same time. From the front, twin-barrel headlamp clusters are positioned higher than the grille itself, conveying an agile, aggressive attitude. The same contrasting design attributes are carried inside, where smooth surfaces are highlighted with thin metal accents. The Lexus obsession to detail is especially evident in the interior. Painstaking execution is reflected in the leather stitching, optional birdseye maple wood finish, and elaborate interior lighting. Optitron gauges are housed
in a precisely assembled instrument cluster that demonstrates the Lexus intention to further reduce, or even eliminate, gaps between interior components. The new Lexus IS should be one of the best-handling cars in the segment. Lexus engineers say the body is designed with exceptional torsional rigidity, and aluminum is used extensively throughout the chassis to reduce weight. Electric power steering is speed sensitive, with a lower ratio for a more direct steering feel. The rear suspension is multi-link, and the shocks have increased piston diameter to improve feel and control. Disc brakes, with high-friction pads, are combined with a variable-ratio brake pedal for more progressive feel.

NISSAN DELIVERS ON 1 MILLION COMMITMENT - NISSAN 180 fully completed – TOKYO (Oct. 6, 2005)—Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., announced today that it sold 3.671 million vehicles from Oct. 1, 2004 to Sept. 30, 2005, successfully delivering on the company’s final NISSAN 180 commitment to sell an additional 1 million vehicles during the twelve-month period compared with fiscal year 2001. Nissan sold 2.597 million vehicles in fiscal 2001, ended March 31, 2002, which means the company sold an additional 1.073 million vehicles during the past twelve months, or 73,000 more units than it had committed to. “Thanks to the hard work of all of Nissan’s employees, our revival is complete,” said Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nissan. “We have regained the confidence and momentum needed to grow significantly and profitably over the long term.” In terms of individual markets, North America, including Mexico and Canada, was the biggest contributor to the 1.073 million additional sales, accounting for 437,000 units. Nissan’s general overseas markets (all markets excluding North America, Japan and Europe) were second with 364,000 units. Japan contributed 188,000 units,

Nissan’s two other commitments under its NISSAN 180 business plan – an operating profit margin of 8% and zero net automotive debt – were accomplished in the first year of that plan, two years ahead of schedule.

2005 MINI COOPER Convertible Top of the Wish List - I Want A Toy Car for Christmas by Judy Gell - Automotive Journalist
D
riving a different car every week gives plenty of opportunity for forming opinions about various models. It also makes fluid my list of favorites. My opinion isn't always based on experience, though. Based purely on visual stimulation I decided that I love the Mini Cooper! I still crane my neck to extend the moments I can enjoy staring at this very appealing vehicle. It is very cartoon or toy-like--I can easily imagine a Mini Cooper with a giant wind-up key sticking out the side. But looks truly can be deceiving, and the Mini Cooper is a real car. The chance to drive a Mini Cooper for a week was obviously thrilling for me. There was no wrestling match or argument over the keys. One look and my husband backed off with his hands up in defeat. It was an unspoken "Step away from the Mini and nobody gets hurt" look--effective if not over used. Our test model happened to be a con-
vertible. It also happened to be a time when I had company at my house: my sister from California and my best friend form Virginia Beach. We spanned the country, a good range of opinions by which to judge the Mini. I drove them around our rural area, past pastures of grazing livestock and curving through wooded areas along creek bottoms. This trio of ladies would have enjoyed one another's company regardless of the activity, but the Mini Cooper with the convertible top down received high praise from all and enhanced our time together with a very enjoyable memory. The car handles easily, rides comfortably, and performs with energy. Very small to look at, it seats four with a trunk that could handle their overnight bags. It is not designed for carrying a family and their luggage on an extended vacation! Larger objects can be stored with the top up and the rear seatbacks folded forward. The standard engine in the Mini
Cooper is a 1.6-liter 115-horsepower with a manual 5-speed transmission. As diminuative as it looks, the Mini has a solid feel and sturdy dependability. As light-hearted as the design appears, it is a quality vehicle inside and out. Safety is guarded by crush zones, side airbags, roll bars, electronic stability programming and reinforced doors. Other standard equipment includes 15-inch wheels, tilt steering column, micron-filtered air conditioning, six-speaker stereo with CD player, power windows and mirrors, and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brakeforce Distribution and Cornering Brake Control. I didn't feel exposed or
unprotected, or even threatened by larger traffic on the road. Once again, this is a real car--well equipped and very capable! So what are you waiting for? The MSRP for the basic Mini Cooper is $21,500, and that is only the beginning of the economy! Fuel ecomony is estimated at 25 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. We averaged over 28 mpg driving a combination of roadways. In addition, the Mini Cooper is proving to be very desirable, making it retain it's value. A great investment--entertaining, practical, useful, economical, and something to be proud of. You might see me craning my neck to stare at your car!

hen I test drove the 2005 Forenza models I was very impressed with the handling of the vehicles. I felt very comfortable and safe while driving the Forenza Sedan and the Wagon. Forenza handled curves, eased into stop and go traffic and avoided a near from an 18 wheeler who was talking on the phone. I was also able to park in tight areas with assurance. I like this one! Featured is an advanced weight-sensing front passenger airbag. Front seat-mounted side airbags for protection. Front and rear crumple zones work with robust high-tensile steel cabin structural features and front and rear side-impact door beams to reduce the impact forces that passengers might be subjected to and to help minimize intrusion into the interior. Height-adjustable front shoulder belts and seatbelt pretensioners help provide optimal belt positioning and automatically take slack out of the front seatbelts the instant after a collision. Three-point seatbelts in the back seat and the LATCH child seat system provide additional layers of security. 25

UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS Beautiful Weather Is Only One Reason To Visit by Ella Patterson
T
he United States Virgin Islands is home to some of the best shopping in the world. There are many reasons to visit the USVI and beautiful weather is only one of them. Day 1: I flew from Dallas/Ft. Worth to St. Thomas. From the airport I was driven to Blackbeard’s Castle. Here, I met our host and as I looked around the immediate perimeter of the hotel I noticed a unique light house, a Blackbeard statue and a beautiful view of the island. Dinner was at Amelia Café, and offered the taste of Spain in the Caribbean. The Owner Randolph Maynard made sure I got to taste my favorites. I ate lobster, mussels, shrimp, and tried the chocolate mousse for desert. Day 2: A light breakfast was served featuring cantaloupe, bagels, oranges, coffee and a variety of Earl Gray teas. After breakfast I headed to the Ferry to travel to St. John for the day. My day was filled with many activities: I started at the Donald Schnell Studio where the legend of Saint John began with the "The Magic Stone." I was told that if I touched the
magic stone I would never be far from the healing power of the islands. Next, I headed to glass blowing and clay demonstrations on Maho Bay. Here the guest learn to transform "trash into treasures" as all kinds of empty bottles become beautiful gift items. Aluminum cans are molded into decorative and useful objects that leave the island as art instead of waste. From Maho Bay I had lunch at Sogo's. Sogo’s felt more like home because it served big juicy burgers. From Sogo’s I headed to Kareso Gallery, My host was artist Avelino Samuel who displayed his beautiful wooden works of art. Next, I took the ferry to St Thomas. It was a peaceful, but crowded ride. Islanders get from one island to the next this way. Once the ferry docked I headed for Zora's Sandal Shop. Here I found custom made sandals that are fit to order. I left Zora’s and shopped for a while before heading back to the hotel to prepare for dinner. Dinner was served at the Old Stone Farmhouse. It was an elegant, evening filled with creative cuisine and sushi. It is situated in a 200 year old, restored plantation field house that overlooks the Mahogany Run Golf Course. Once this Travel & Auto

300 acre plantation stretched from Magen's Bay to Mandahl. Day 3: The tour began at Tillett Gardens and Screen Painting with host Rhoda Tillett, and Albert (Sonny) Thomas. They gave me an opportunity to make a silk screened T-Shirt. After making my T-shirt I headed to Island Fragrance, hosted by Gail Garrison. She’s the fragrance specialist and owner. She gave me samples of perfume filled gift bags. Next, I headed to Glady's Café' for lunch. Host/owner, Gladys Isles serves fresh shrimp, tapos and large fruit flavored drinks. After lunch I headed to the Visitors Bureau for presentations from more islanders. Gwendolyn Harley is a doll maker and Lucia Henley, makes hard candy. I left them to catch a Sea Plane from St. Thomas to St. Croix. The accommodations were provided by Hotel on the Cay, an older 55 room hotel located in the middle of Christiansted Harbor. It has the only "in town" beach on St. Croix. Transportation was provided by St. Croix Safari Tours. Ask for Sweeny Toussant.
Fall 2005
Day 4: Breakfast was provided by Hotel on The Cay. After breakfast I headed to the Roadside Pan Yard, a small local company that makes drums. The drums are made and tuned by hand. From there I headed for The Mahogany Woodworks Gallery, where the owner gave a short tour of his wood gallery. From there I went to Turtles Deli for lunch. I visited several craft exhibits at the St. George Botanical Gardens hosted by local artists. Cruzan Temptations by Laverne Bates served hand made tarts, candies and cakes. Selah's fragrances, and botanicals have beneficial and soothing properties. African Patchwork Quilts, are designed by Carmen Haywood. Thy Rod & Thy Staff produces carved staff's in many designs and shapes. Dee's Potpourri & Mocko Jumbie Dolls are created by Marcelle Haywood. Earlene Wagner creates hand-made Crochet Dolls. I had dinner at Kendrick's Restaurant, which had more of a sports bar feel. The restaurant presented good. food and music. Day 5: I departed the Virgin Islands and headed back home with gifts galore.

The celebration salutes 50 years of magic at Disney parks and resorts around the world honoring the 1955 opening of Disneyland in California. Walt Disney World has imported exciting new shows and attractions from Disney parks around the globe for the celebration, which kicked off May 5, 2005 and runs for 18 magical months.
MOVIE MAGIC & MOTORS: With the theme park's iconic "Earffel Tower" standing tall in the background, a professional stunt driver takes flight on the set of "Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show" at the Disney-MGM Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The
new, 30-minute show features cars, motorcycles and high-powered watercraft piloted by highly trained stunt drivers. It's one of the attractions debuting at Walt Disney World in May 2005 for the "Happiest Celebration on Earth," Disney's global event to mark 50 years of Disney theme parks. "Lights, Motors, Action!" will open in May at Walt Disney World in Florida along with Soarin', a multi-sensory ride that takes Epcot guests on a flying adventure over the California landscape; "Cinderellabration," a princess-inspired show at the Magic Kingdom; and Lucky the Dinosaur, Disney's first free-moving Audio-Animatronics creation that will roam Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.
ROYAL TREATMENT -Cinderella Castle has received an elegant makeover that gives a glittering, golden touch to the icon of Walt Disney World Resort as Disney shares the "Happiest Celebration on Earth" with theme park guests around the world. As part of the 18-month salute to 50 years of Disney theme parks, Walt Disney Imagineering has decorated the castle with graceful touches of golden trim, rose swags, bunting and swirling bands of "pixie dust." Plus, in a nod to Disney's rich history, golden sculptures of animated characters from several classic feature films shine from the castle's turrets, towers and balconies, including Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinker Bell (from 1953's "Peter Pan"), Flounder and Sebastian (from 1989's "The Little Mermaid") and Simba,
Timon and Pumbaa (from 1994's "The Lion King"). Above the castle's front arch hangs a golden frame with a magical stained glass-style window. In it, colorful images of the five iconic castles from Disney theme parks around the
world appear at regular intervals throughout the day. Cinderella Castle rises 189 feet above the Magic Kingdom, one of four theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
