FORTIUS Pamplona - Bayonne An international project to valorise the fortified heritage of Pamplona and Bayonne Twinned since 1960, Pamplona and Bayonne were both built as strongholds to harness their strategic location on both sides of the Pyrenees. The ramparts of both cities are an example of the transition from medieval defensive systems to Renaissance modernity in terms of military engineering, technical innovation and talent. In the 20th century, the city walls ceased to fulfil a defensive function while restricting the growth of cities that were becoming increasingly populous. Both Pamplona and Bayonne lived through a two-way process that in recent decades attempted to recover their fortified heritage. The ramparts were restored and complementary facilities were created to turn the city walls into meeting and recreational venues. The time has come to enjoy the ramparts, so that the old defensive walls can become a place in which to discover multiple experiences, where one can truly experience the walls. A willingness to share and transfer experiences, together with an interest in understanding their fortified heritage within the scope of border defence systems, led Pamplona and Bayonne to undertake a

joint project —FORTIUS, Pamplona and Bayonne fortified heritage tourist and cultural valorisation project. This is taking them along a path of joint understanding of this defensive heritage, generating a sense of identity and cohesion to strengthen their feeling of belonging to the European Union. FORTIUS presents the fortified heritage as an opportunity for innovation and economic development with five lines of action: restoration of heritage elements; landscaping and sustainable management plan; cultural and tourist offer; business innovation; and research and dissemination of the cultural and tourist value of the fortified cities. FORTIUS falls within the Spain — France — Andorra Territorial Operational Plan [POCTEFA] promoted by the Pyrenees Working Community [CTP] and is financed by European Regional Development Funds [ERDF].

Dancing Ramparts Guadalupe Bulwark The Guadalupe Bulwark —usually closed to the public— opens its doors to host an international exhibition of aerial and vertical dancing. Inside the Bulwark, there is a terrace with catering service, exclusively for the audience, and one can also visit the vaulted barracks. Access is through the tunnel of the Redín Bulwark tunnel. Admission includes two tapas and two draught beers or soft drinks. The enclosure will be open to the public from 8.30 pm to 12.30 am. The dance performance will begin at 10.00 pm, but before that, you can enjoy the performances of the Navarrese companies La Banda (7 August) and Bubamara Dance Theatre (14 and 21 August) with three, light-hearted, humorous gestural shows combining theatre, dance and circus. There will be music before and after the dance provided by DJ Netanyahu (7 August), DJ Nana (14 August) and DJ Funk Fatale (21 August) from the opening time until close.

A very extensive dance and music repertoire from various regions of the Arab world. From Egypt to Algeria, a classical, folk and traditional tour with typical dances and music, a wide range of colours, costumes and sounds of various instruments.
KulumbÁfrica refers to a big boat coming to Europe from West Africa laden with musicians and traditional African instruments. These musicians wish to communicate, teach and transmit the roots of their culture and, to do so, they offer a wide range of sounds with their different percussion and string instruments, the melody of their songs and their dance as essential elements of African culture.

Oniria An oriental and fusion dance show with live music combining classical Egyptian music and music from other parts of the Arab world with more contemporary themes including the sound of the Australian didgeridoo. The music of Broken Brothers is based on the sounds of contemporary New Orleans brass bands. Funk, gospel and modern jazz flood their energetic performances in which collective improvisations play a leading role.
Created in Estella in 1987, it is one of the first Dixieland bands in Navarre. It boasts a long, fruitful career, with numerous performances across Navarre and other regions offering a cheerful, jaunty jazz style. For nearly 30 years, several generations of great musicians have been putting their best music to this style of jazz.
David Mengual is double bass player and composer and a key figure in Spanish jazz. He is joined by three musicians who share his zeal for research in a restful project which aims very high, Slow Quartet. The themes are based on simplicity and space, and silence is one more component, struggling against the excess of information while searching for lyricism and authenticity in its discourse.

Ana Alcaide Luna sefardita Ana Alcaide, a singer, performer and songwriter from Toledo, offers a review of her musical career inspired in Sephardic tradition. Luna sefardita is the song of Alina, a girl who embodies the history of the Sephardim and abandons Toledo embarking on a long journey of exile to follow the traces of the moon seeking and finding herself. Her nostalgic trek traces a bridge to the past and offers a musical journey through different Mediterranean landscapes. Performers: Ana Alcaide, Rainer Seiferth and Bruno Duque. Kepa Junkera A biref history of the trikitixa In 2015 Kepa Junkera is celebrating his 35th anniversary on stage playing the trikitixa —a career dedicated to Basque traditional music and the root music. After the success of his abum dedicated to Galicia, Kepa returns to his origins in the Basque Country with a magnum opus: A brief history of the trikitixa, a project which explains his conception of the essence of his music: arin, arin, martxas, fandangoes, with the collaboration of the members of Sorginak and the Pamplona Gaita Academy. Spyridoula Baka presents its new project devoted entirely to the sea, SEAnanáy, and immerses itself in the freshness of Mediterranean music. The sound transcends cultural borders, with a balance between the present and the past, fusing the musical languages of East and West and different polyphonic textures, reintroducing and adapting traditional Greek songs and the repertoire of the Mediterranean until it becoems the voice of the eternal sea. Fetén fetén + Luis Delgado Músicas de raíz The music of Fetén Fetén is a journey along the memory of our roots and traditions. Its compositions guide us to dance rhythms, fox-trot, Waltz, chotis, seguidillas and habaneras, rocking us with their chords across the Iberian Peninsula and making us to fly from Italy to Japan or Argentina to Portugal, through a melting pot of musical devices such as the musical saw, theremin and stroh violin. In this concert they are joined by a special guest, Luis Delgado, a scholar of tradition and collector of unusual instruments. Performers: Diego Galaz, Jorge Arribas and Luis Delgado. “Labels often suffocate more than clarify”, says Niño de Elche, an artist who combines collective projects the likes of Los Voluble, Los Flamencos, bulos.net, recordings with the improvisation duet Seidagasa, partnerships with the guitarists José Sánchez and Raúl Cantizano, in the latest album of the singer Rocío Márquez, and the last Flamenco Bienal in Seville.
Sandra was fascinated with the idea of listening to how her voice would sound tied to a piano, and it was always clear that she wanted to do it with versions just where taste is the most important thing to get those who hear her to forget the original and fly to wherever they wish. Songs that tell powerful stories, with force, sometimes related to her own life, giving everything a double meaning. That is why she focused on the repertoire of legendary artists, José Feliciano, Mercedes Sosa, Los Panchos and Machin, “masters who have lived until they became what they are,” says Sandra.
A concert that will bring together some of the most promising figures of flamenco in Navarre, led by the young singer Jolis Muñoz. A show coordinated by the Navarre group of Roma entities Gaz Kaló.

Soledad Vélez We could almost say that she is a newcomer, but no one at this point will be able to deny the hypnotic and abrasive power of the voice of Soledad Vélez. “Run with Wolves” is a return to dot the i’s and cross the t’s and offer the versatility of her music and confirm the high emotional voltage of her compositions. A painstaking, very risky production by Soledad herself, together with her faithful squire Jesús de Santos, and the technical work of Xema Fuertes and Cayo Bellveser, recorded at Rio Bravo studio. Natalia García Poza, Nat Simons, is a folk-rock singer, guitarist and songwriter influenced by blues and jazz. She just released her first studio album, ‘Home on High’, sung in English with the Audiomatic label, produced by David Gwynn and with the collaboration of Manuel Cabezalí, Havalina. Reina Republicana was born in Pamplona from the ashes of Half Foot Outisde in late 2009, with Israel Medina as founding member and with the aim of defining a sound based on the influences that had no place in his previous band, so he can move from pop to bossa, to the groups produced by Phil Spector or Brian Wilson, the c86 sounds or indie guitars. Always with a common denominator, melody and song and a special atmosphere, and always sung with a female voice, which gives the ensemble textures leading many to consider his songs poisoned sweets. After various lineup changes, Israel Medina stabilised the Group with Maite Rodríguez (voice, keyboards and viola), Markos Tantos (bass), Txemi Losada (drums) and Javier Barbería (drums), excellent musicians from the Pamplona stage.
Created in Pamplona in 2014, this group of veteran musicians such as Ion Minde, Edu Ugarte and Luis Gómez, head of the Izar Black label, united to defend the powertrio format and give free rein to their passion for punk, power pop and American indie rock from the 80s and 90s. Following the trail of Hüsker Dü, Dinosaur Jr, The Replacements and Sonic Youth, the band has arrived at their first work, This has to hurt’, published by Farmway.

Suburbano
‘Sea and love songs’, a repertoire of habaneras, boleros, zambas, waltzes and Cuban son. ‘Alfonsina y el mar’, ‘Allá en la Haban’ or ‘Dos Gardenias’ performed with Neus Mar’s clear, transparent voice, which is both evocative and full of nuances.
A review of the albums of this legendary pop-rock band. The show includes classics such as ‘La puerta de Alcalá’, ‘Arde París’ and ‘Makinavaja’. Clean sounds, wellstructured songs, with certain a classical sense, inspired by different styles and impeccably written letters looking at reality in the face.

Miss Undergroove Miss Undergroove was created in Pamplona, designed and felt with the intention of prompting people to dance, smile and enjoy the countless timbres and atmospheres that engage with all their love and detail, allowing the music to flow alive. Influences are of all kinds. Disco, African and Brazilian rhythms blend with sounds from the most distant parts of Eastern Europe and closer ones from jazz and the result is a simple and affordable explosion of joy. Candlelight Walls The City Walls of Pamplona A magical evening walk along the ramparts of Pamplona, illuminated by thousands of candles and dotted with music. Along the way, ther are stalls where one can enjoy the food on offer. Tickets for food and drink can be purchased in advance at the Tourist Office or on the same day on the route of the wall. Guided and dramatised tours The City Walls of Pamplona The fortifications of Pamplona received two European Union Prizes for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards in 2012 —in the Conservation and Audience Choice categories. The Pamplona City Council offers guided tours of the fortified enclosure departing from the Pamplona Fortifications Interpretation Centre, an excellent starting point for a walk along the ramparts. The Centre is located inside the San Bartolomé Fortress, at the end of the Media Luna Park Crescent and in front of the Labrit Bulwark.
THEATRE The guardians of the wall At different points on the route, the engineer Próspero de Verboom, an infantryman, and gatekeepers recreate the daily lives and stories of those who worked near the city ramparts. The characters are embodied by the actor Ion Iraizoz. General information San Bartolomé Fortress /Pamplona Fortifications Interpretation Centre The old crescent-shaped San Bartolomé is filled today with visitors, sounds, images and stories (past and present) to provide a new way of interpreting our heritage. The Centre is located inside the San Bartolomé Fortress, at the end of the Media Luna Park Crescent and in front of the Labrit Bulwark, Calle Arrieta on the corner of Calle Aralar. A Museum covering 220 m2 whose contents are divided into five vaulted barracks. The vaulted rooms were originally used to store goods, such as gunpowder and food, while providing shelter for the soldiers of the guard. Timetable: Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 am – 2.00 pm / 5.00 pm – 7.00 pm Prices: General: €3 (except Sundays) Reduced: €1.5 (pensioners, disabled, unemployed with unemployment card, students with university card, youth card holders, pilgrims with credentials, teachers and groups of more than 20 people) Sundays: €1.5 (for all users) Children under 11, free admission.

Citadel It is the oldest bastioned pentagonal fortress in use in the world and one of Pamplona’s landmarks, an essential part of the city’s fortified heritage. Experts consider the compound a jewel of 16th-century military architecture, that was imitated throughout Europe and overseas. A cultural offer for everyone, one of the best gardens in the city, exhibition halls, gastro–bar and more. Park opening times: Monday to Friday, 7.30 am to 9.30 pm Saturdays, 8 am to 9.30 pm Sundays and Holidays, 9 am to 9.30 pm Ciudadela exhibitions: Tuesday to Saturday, from 6.30 pm until 9 pm Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 12 noon until 2 pm.
