EDITOR RAMBLINGS
By Josh Noll
Hello PA and welcome back to the latest edition of PA Musician Magazine. You may have noticed that the paper is just a little thicker this month. We have had a steady increase in advertisers and there was just no way to cram it all into 24 pages so we had to jump to 32 pages. With the extra pages we are able to add some new content and I decided to feature Darlene Hassinger, for our first of and hopefully more, Spotlights on Local Music Photographers. There are a ton of talented photographers out there covering our area, whose talents sometimes get lost in the world of the internet. Being able to get your photos published in print format is something not many people get to do these days. So please go check out Darlene’s photos in this issue and give her a big hi-five the next time you see her out capturing a show. She is a true local music lover and one heck of a photographer. Also I would like to thank her for supplying us with photos and doing her first article. It isn’t as easy as it sounds putting your work and yourself out there to the public, but she did a great job. thanks again Darlene. Say the name Jigsy’s to just about anyone and they will say Oh I know that name, where did I see that at? Well the answer is right along 11-15 just past the Summerdale plaza in Enola. Just a short drive away Jigsy’s Brewpub & Restaurant is home to some of the best wings and pizza in the Harrisburg area. They have a beautiful patio area along with the restaurant and they also have LIVE Music! This month they have Neil Mcclain on the 6th, Wilson Lucia Duo on the 13th, the ever popular Matt Jameson on the 20th and an Open Mic Night with RJ Conrad on the 27th. The weather is starting to break and we will have some nice evenings before long, so get out and enjoy them at Jigsy’s Brew Pub. Check them out at facebook.com/jigsysoldforgepizza .
Nick from 717 entertainment has been blasting shows out of the solar system this year. May is no exception with some huge shows over at Lovedrafts Brewing Co. Starting off with Through Fire, Dropout Kings, Hate Grenade, Defiant and Nailbite all in one night on Tuesday the 9th. On the 11th it’s Saving Vice, Renovare, Ultraviolent, Who they Fear and Obsolescence. Wow some
heavy hitters, but there’s more UGLY KID JOE! that’s right I guess that’s pretty much all you need to say about that. Except it’s on the 26th and this is the first U.S. tour in nearly two decades. They will be rocking with special guests Pistols At Dawn. That’s not all they also have Filter on the 30th along with a full schedule of events you can check out on page 2.
Another big event going on this month is the Racehorse Tavern’s St Jude Benefit week! This event is all about the kids at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and is in memory of James K Delisio Sr. Jim at the Racehorse is very passionate about this event and goes all out to bring in the best entertainment and guest bartenders to help raise as much as possible. The week starts out with guest bartenders and all tips go to St Judes. Along with the guest bartenders there will be acoustic music each night as well. On Friday they start out acoustic with the infamous Johnny REEVER then switch to the big bands with Smarty Jones, Stoned Alice, Pillbox, Rock Hollow and Awaken The Giant! Saturday is once again opened up by MR REEVER followed by Faith Noel then a Live auction with gift baskets. After the auction it’s back to the music with Derailed, Ten Ton Stone, Diminishing Returns, Six Whiskey Revival and Jeremiah James & The Revival. Not to mention he has the rest of the calendar full on LIVE MUSIC! I wish I could write about all the great shows going on this month but just look through the pages and see for yourself. I would like to say I’m very grateful for all the support showing up the last couple months. I really appreciate each and everyone of you. Next month marks 5 years since I took over the paper so I’ll save all the mushy thank you’s for June. Till then, take care PA and like I say each month, get a hold of me call or text 717-6364203 ( I think my phone is working now! that’s another story!) or email joshnoll@pamusician.net Peace.

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT
By Rachel Rocks
April definitely showered me with music! Music was everywhere this month, anytime I wanted to hear it! It’s so awesome to see so many venues having some form of music.
My month started and ended at the same spot, the River House with DMC Duo. DMC Duo just won a CPMA Award for the best Duo of 2022! It was the third year they were nominated, and it was awesome to see them finally win! DMC Duo has multiple shows most weekends and they play all over the place! I always love when our schedules align and I get a chance to sit back and listen to them. I’m super excited for their EP, hopefully getting released sooner than later.
Speaking of the CPMA’s, the April Issue was printed on the same days as the 4th Annual CPMAs, so it seems like it was forever ago, but definitely worth mentioning! The Central PA Music Hall of Fame celebrated their 4th Annual CPMA’s at the Hershey Theatre. This year they decided to kick things off with a Pre-Party at the Midstate Distillery booth in the Hershey Market. Matt and I decided to go check it out and it was awesome to see everyone already networking and meeting each other. Matt got a chance to

talk to Phil and got a couple dates lined up at Flinchy’s, plus he was able to meet some people that he only saw or heard about on Facebook, so it was awesome to put a face to the name, and actually get a chance to talk to people. We met Cory Rosen of The Story. Cory is doing some great podcasts with local musicians that are both entertaining and even educational. Cory won the CPMA for the best podcast of 2022.
Then it was time for the Ceremony itself! So many people jammed into one building! I never did hear the final count of ticket sales, but the Hershey Theatre was packed! It was almost too packed it was hard to move around and talk to people. But the event itself was flawless. There were 43 CPMA awards handed out, and then of course the actual 2023 Hall of Fame Inductees: Breaking Benjamin, The Buoys, The Legends, The Maxwell Project, The Quintones, and Steve Rudolph. This year the Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to the Clair Brothers. It’s always awesome seeing all of the local musicians getting the recognition they definitely deserve, but also awesome to hear the stories of the inductees, some of which are still rockin’ today! You can check out all of the winners at www.cpmhof.com.
After the awards show it was time to head to the After Party at the Englewood! What a full day of fun celebrating the Central PA Music Scene! There was so much dancing and networking and just an overall great time of letting loose and enjoying being together for such an awesome event! Next year I have to remember to take off work the day AFTER the CPMAs for sure! Congrats to

Brandon and the entire CPMHOF team. You really put together one heck of a show!
The next night I headed down to The Underground for The Cretins and Hot & Dangerous. I was shocked when I got there to see the amazing upgrades they did to the sound and lights! The Cretins were already rockin’ the Underground when we got there. I was actually surprised at how many Ramones songs I knew. I saw some friends I haven’t seen in a while, and we quickly had the dance floor hoppin! I was excited to see Hot & Dangerous play second because I finally had the opportunity to catch a full show. I was a sweaty, hot mess by the end of their show, but had a blast singing and dancing to every song. It was like they got on my favorite playlist, and just went down the line! Erica can sing such a wide range of songs, that girl definitely has some crazy pipes for sure!
Saturday afternoon I was out delivering and got a text that Dr. Nyce was playing at the The Cretins at The Underground Live

Broad St. Market so I swung in there for a little while. I think that might’ve been the first solo Dr. Nyce show I was able to see. It was an emotional day because it started at a funeral for a dear friend, and then out of nowhere Dr. Nyce started playing “All Along the Watchtower”, it just so happens to be a very special song to my family and a song that Dad would play quite frequently, so needless to say I almost lost it, but managed to keep it together! Music is so moving for so many reasons, but truly moves my soul, and gives me a peace like nothing else can. Thanks Zach, aka Dr. Nyce for the entertainment. Shortly after his show we had a family emergency, so music was truly there when I needed it, for sure!
Matt Jameson had another super busy month!
April 9th marked one year since his first solo show! Robin and Migsy at Jigsy’s helped him celebrate with a delicious ice cream cake! Jigsy’s has their patio open on beautiful days, and Saturdays you can catch lots of great music! Matt will be back there May 20th! Check out Jigsy’s ad in this issue for their full schedcontinued on next page...

ule and all they have to offer! He also celebrated his 100th show at Stoney Creek and he had the place packed with family and friends, to the point where people were being turned away! Some other momentous shows were the Sherwood Inn, that place had reservations made on a Saturday afternoon and people were dancing wherever they could, pretty much because of 81 year
old Carol, who got someone up dancing with her for every song! Matt has made so many fans at Sherwood they’ve also followed him to other shows throughout York and some even came the whole way up to The Doyle! The Doyle is always standing room only and that place absolutely LOVES live music, and the whole bar is singing along! Matt had the opportunity to play at Moe’s Bar and Grill! Moe’s was Matt’s home away from home for many years, so when Erika Rutt-Atkens asked him
BOB RANDALL
Acoustic
to play her LLS event, it was a no brainer. Moe’s was packed and tons of money was raised for a great cause! I of course have to mention the 4/20 show at Sturges Speakeasy. That place was a party before the first note and it continued all night where he ended with “Because I Got High” which was obviously a HUGE “hit” with the crowd! It’s so awesome to see people make their birthday plans to celebrate at Matt’s shows, or just their night’s out, or whatever! His fan base is growing and it’s truly a beautiful thing to see. He has another gigantic month of shows! Check out his ad in this issue, and come on out and sing and dance along!
I was able to catch two of Derek Henry’s acoustic shows this month. I saw him on the first deck show of the season at Flinchy’s. It was truly a beautiful night and it’s always fun hearing Derek. We were also celebrating Michele Rider’s birthday, so a great night with friends and greater music is always a special treat, especially on a Wednesday! Thursday Derek played up at The Doyle and
I was able to catch a full show! The Doyle is a cool spot to check out music. A lot of their Thursday shows are in the small downstairs bar, but they also have a big ballroom upstairs for their bigger shows. We packed the downstairs for Derek’s show and had lots of delicious food! Derek has a ton of Acoustic Shows for May, check out his facebook page, Derek Henry Acoustic, for his full schedule. Also, make sure and check out The Doyle’s full ad in this issue. SO many great bands, and of course the big Free Spirit Campground Music Festival they are hosting Memorial Day Weekend. 3 days of camping and music in the heartland of Perry County!
On a Saturday afternoon I finally got a chance to catch up with Addi Grace at Rotunda Brew Pub in Annville. It was probably about a year since I caught one of her shows, but I couldn’t believe how her confidence has grown! Wow!! The Rotunda Brew Pub had her playing out in their deck area, and it was a super cool place and Addi had it packed with people enjoying her show. On a day when most kids would be at an Easter Egg Hunt, Addi was too busy rockin’ out! She has one heck of a stage presence, and a smile that shines for miles. You can truly see how happy she is playing music! It was also beautiful to see one of her best friends there enjoying her show too! Support is so im-
portant, and I’m glad to see even tho is rockin’ in the free world, she also has an amazing support system! Addi has something like 60 shows booked in amongst, school and family obligations. She is a beast!! If you get a chance to see her, definitely do it! You won’t be disappointed.
On a Friday night I zoomed down to Jen-Jen’s Rhythm & Brews for Stricken and Gun Metal Gray. The parking lot was insane, but the venue itself was even crazier. People were packed in like sardines, and everyone was having a blast! It
didn’t take long til we were all sweaty and head banging the night away! It’s unfortunate that bands like Stricken really don’t have very many venues that let them play anymore, but every time they get the opportunity the place is packed and wanting more! I’m so glad Jen-Jen’s is giving our local rock bands a place to play and entertain the masses! I haven’t seen Gun Metal Gray in years! Dave, Christian, and Ed’s harmonies are crazy! I must be getting old, because I really wish they weren’t quite so loud. It was hard to stand up front and get the full experience, but from the outside deck, they sounded great! Gun Metal Gray has been releasing more originals and rockin’ some amazing covers! Their shows are few and far between, but get out there and see them when you can!
On a Friday night I zoomed down to the York Hollywood Casino to see Katz 22. Any chance I can see these guys I hop on it! So much talent and what a great variety of songs. I instantly had to slip on my dancing shoes, and join the crowd in a night of dancing and fun! The craziness of having three people in a band that can all sing lead adds such a huge dynamic to their band and the amount of songs they can cover! It’s always jaw dropping and tons of fun!! Check out Katz 22’s ad in this issue, and plan your next night out on the town, just don’t forget your dancing shoes for a great night of fun and shenanigans!
Saturday night I headed to Launch Music Conference in Lancaster, I unfortunately only made it to one stop before my ride or die partner in crime, wasn’t feeling well and had to go home. We did make it to Isaac’s for Emaylia, a young keyboard player accompanied by a drummer from right here in Lititz, she played some beautiful originals. Next up was Chris Johnson from 710OIL, he was the main reason we headed to Launch. We met Chris at a private party in Mifflintown, and he comes up from Virginia Beach, so since he made the trip we wanted to support him. Chris is one of those guys that plays here, there, and everywhere he possibly can. He does everything in his power to just play music! Shaky Joe Kambic took the stage next and he was playing a cigar box guitar, so he was quite entertaining. As with all music conferences it always amazes me at the wide variety of crazy good talent shows up! I was also able to chat with Casey Walton about her showcase the night before, playing with a full band! Casey is gearing up to leave us and head down to Nashville. She’s been rockin’ everywhere she possibly can, she even won a CPMA Spot Award for the Iron Woman of the Year! She is a fulltime musician, and she also takes every advantage she can and plays here, there and everywhere! All while pumping out some amazing original music!
On a Friday night I zoomed up to Shermans Creek Inn for Fell From Zero. Another band I literally haven’t seen for YEARS! These guys pump out some amazing rock and heavy metal hits that you don’t hear very often, but everyone at Shermans Creek continued next page...

was loving every song! That dance floor was packed! I think my neck is still recovering!! They also still sneak in their own versions of some Taylor Swift favorites that always make people go.. “What the… AWESOME!” I’m so glad to have places supporting and hosting these amazing bands! Check out Shermans Creek’s ad in this issue to see their full line-up and see what they have
happening at the Creek! They will also be kicking things off at the Appalachian Harley Davidson pavilion in Mechanicsburg. That’s always an awesome place to catch some fantastic bands on a Saturday afternoon. From what I have heard, you should be able to catch a glimpse of the infamous Jeff “Ritt” Rittenhouse running sound!
On our way home from an early Matt Jameson show at Bridgewater Public House in York, we stopped in at Lovedrafts on 2nd Street for Y2Kids. Matt’s friend Hunter Reiner is their new drummer, so he wanted to stop in and support him. Lovedrafts is so tiny, but we made the most out of the dance floor and with no air conditioning that place was quickly a sweatfest! Y2Kids have their show matched up with music videos playing on screens in the background, which is quite funny, and brings back lots of memories. The guys put on a great show and had people jumping and dancing along all night long! Lovedrafts is narrow, yet tall! They have 3 full floors to explore and spread out, and luckily a really cool deck area to grab a breath of fresh air!It was also super exciting that it’s finally a venue that has music til 1am! That’s so rare, since Covid most places are over by midnight so we don’t turn into Gremlins!
A full Thursday night of shenanigans started out early at The Doyle in Duncannon for a little bit of Matt Jameson and some delicious dinner! Holly just likes me to come for dinner so she can steal my french fries! After dinner I headed down to HMAC for the Sink In show with Dinosaurs in Paris, Lyndhurst, and Observe the 93rd opening. I got there in time to hear the tail end of Lyndhurst. These guys are always filled with tons of energy and their

music is absolutely contagious! I haven’t seen Observe the 93rd for a little while, it’s always awesome catching a full band show. I was packed full of energy and the energy came out in full force! It’s always so much fun jumping and dancing along at an Observe show! June 3rd Observe it opening for Puddle of Mudd at XL Live. Tickets are on sale now, ya better snag them before they are gone! Last band of the night was Sink In. Even though these guys are from the area, it’s my first time catching a show, they are usually too busy touring the country to spend time in Harrisburg, but I’m glad they made a trip back home and HMAC gave them a place to shine! They were definitely happy to be back in the burg,
and spent lots of time on the dance floor with their fans being fully immersed in their show! What a fantastic night of original music!
My last Friday night of the month I headed back to the Underground for Road Case and LeadFoot. It was awesome to catch some more Road Case! It had been a few months, and that’s just too long! I love these guys and all of the songs they play. The last full band of the month was LeadFoot. The last time these guys were at the Underground it had just re-opened and it was before they had their new systems in place. What a HUGE difference. The guys were rockin’ out all night long with a big smile on their face! LeadFoot definitely knows how to keep the pedal to the 80s metal and melt faces all night long!
Well that’s all the music for this month. A special little extra announcement is that we welcome Christian Yeager back to our pages. He is releasing another single, “Somebody’s Loving You Right”. He’s going to have a special event for the release at the Vineyard at Hershey on June 4th at 6pm. You can check out his ad in this issue for all of the details. He has quite a few shows throughout the area and interviews to promote his new single, so keep an eye out for Christian.
Wow! What an exciting fun filled month!!!
Thanks to everyone for all of the entertainment! May has me traveling quite a bit, but as usual I will catch shows wherever I possibly can! Congrats to Josh for having his biggest issue yet!!! Thanks so much for all of the support from all of our advertisers! Please turn the pages and find something that will make you smile, and get out there and Support Live Music! If you have any questions or suggestions, you can always hit me up at RachelRocks@pamusician.net.

Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Singer songwriter, Ryan Adams, visited Bensalem, PA on March 30th for an intimate show at Parx Casino. Adams began his career in 1990 and has released 24 studio albums. He is an incredible artist and fantastic singer who is constantly creating music. Of his many talents, Adams often covers songs from other musicians which possibly become better than the original versions. In 2015, he covered Taylor Swift’s album ‘1989’ in its entirety and gained notoriety for his version of Oasis’ song “Wonderwall.” Supposedly, Adams covered The Strokes debut album ‘Is This It’ but has never released it publicly. Ryan Adams just concluded his solo tour in Europe and returns to the USA for 45 shows with his band, The Cardinals, and plays in Reading, PA on August 4th.
MTV’s Headbangers Ball host, Riki Rachtman, visited Central PA for a spoken word performance at JB Lovedrafts in Mechanicsburg on April 5th. The former television and radio personality reminisced heavy metal stories with Guns ’N’ Roses, Faster Pussycat, Skid Row and many others, as well as famously wild nights at his notorious Hollywood bar, The Cathouse. The Super High-Tech Jet Fighters played Tellus 360 on April 15th, as part of Lancaster’s Launch Music Festival, the evening also featured Blind Accuracy, No Trigger and Brendan Kelly of Lawrence Arms.
April 6th consisted of a trip to Philadelphia to see rising band, The Bobby Lees, at the Kung Fu Necktie bar. The Bobby Lees are fairly new to the world, originating in 2018 from Woodstock, NY and had Jon Spencer produce their third studio album, Skin Suit. The band has toured recently with Future Islands, The Black Lips and the Chats. HU University brought the return of Houndmouth to Harrisburg on April 20th to XL Live. Houndmouth first visited HMAC’s Capitol Ballroom in Harrisburg in November 2022. The alternative blues and rock band from Indiana became known for their hit song, ‘Sedona’, which they performed on Late Show with David Letterman in 2015. Harrisburg was the first night of Houndmouth’s current month-long tour which also stops at Baltimore’s Soundstage on May 2nd.
Foo Fighters will open Washington DC’s Atlantis on May 30th followed by 43 other major artists including George Clinton, X, Joan Jett, The Pixies, Billy Idol, Tegan and Sara, Gary Clark Jr. among others. The new club, which pays homage to the original 9:30 Club, cost $10 million to build and is a 450-capacity venue. The Atlantis is owned by I.M.P., a preeminent independent
concert promoter who also books The Anthem, Merriweather Post Pavilion and the 9:30 Club. The original 9:30 Club had a capacity for 200 and featured some of DC’s greatest performances including, R.E.M., Nirvana, Dolly Parton, James Brown, Fugazi, Public Enemy and many more. Foo Fighters have also unveiled six new amphitheater dates: Spokane, WA (Aug 4), Salt Lake City, UT (Aug 8), Stateline, NV (Aug 10), Virginia Beach, VA (Sept 19), Phoenix, AZ (Oct 3), El Paso, TX (Oct 5).
Fresh off a residency in Las Vegas, Boy George and Culture Club announced a North American tour for the summer of 2023. Supported by fellow 80s hitmakers Howard Jones and Ber-
lin, the tour will visit 25 amphitheaters, including Philadelphia’s Mann Music Center on July 30th. Sting has announced 20 dates for his North American tour “My Songs World Tour.” The former-Police frontman will also tour Japan, South Africa, United Aram Emirates, Australia and New Zealand. Sting plays Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY on September 8th. Greta Van Fleet will spend the second half of 2023 globe trotting as the band unveils their “Starcatcher World Tour” in support of their upcoming album due to be released on July 21st. meant there was a place for people like me to hang out and belong,” Billy Corgan said in a statement. “That’s what ‘The World Is A Vampire’ is about. Bringing back that sense of community. If you don’t fit in, you belong here.” Dates include: Holmdel, New Jersey (August 24th), Wantagh, NY (August 30th) and Bristow, VA (August 31st).
Music executive, Seymour Stein, passed away at the age of 80 of cancer and left an indelible imprint on the modern record business. Stein co-founded Sire Records and was the Vice President of Warner Bros Records. He signed and began the careers of the Ramones, Talking Heads, Richard Hell and the Void-oids, The Dead Boys, The Pretenders, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, The Cure, Soft Cell, The Replacements, The Ocean Blue and Madonna. Stein commented on hearing the Ramones for the first time: “It was like sticking my hand in a live electric light socket. The jolt went right through me.” Madonna once stated, “Every time he signs somebody, he’s taking a chance. And there aren’t many people in the entertainment industry who do that anymore.” Stein also helped resuscitate the careers of Lou Reed, Brian Wilson, Jimmy Scott and Roky Erickson.

Three bags of drugs and drug-related paraphernalia were found at the scene, where police collected “a baggy with a brown powdery substance, foil with burn residue, saline and a spoon with residue.” Born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, Artis Leon Ivey, Jr., the rapper known as Coolio was 59.
Mick Mars, who served as Motley Crue’s lead guitarist for 41 years, is suing the band in a series of claims. Paperwork was filed through Mars’ attorney claiming Motley Crue has deliberately withheld information about the bands businesses that he has a 25% ownership share in. Mars gave up his touring duties due to complications with his ongoing battle with Ankylosing Spondylitis but otherwise would remain a member of the group. However, Motley Crue stated Mars had “retired” completely from the band, ousting him against his will. Bassist, Nikki Sixx, commented “Sad day for us and we don’t deserve this considering how many years we’ve been propping him up. We still wish him the best and hope he find’s lawyers and managers who aren’t damaging him. We love you Mick.”

THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL SCIENCE EXPERIMENT FROM WESTERN PA
When you hear the band name ‘Radio 45,” you might think back to an era when radio played 45 rpm vinyl records, which – once upon a time – were the main format by which hit songs were consumed by the masses. In a current age where listeners can access potential hit songs through multiple streaming and online outlets, social media platforms like Tik-Tok, YouTube, Vevo, and other avenues – how does a band or artist navigate the
waters to get quality music out to listeners and potential fans, and earn a living doing so?
Based in Pittsburgh, Radio 45 takes a scientific and calculated approach toward accomplishing this.
Before we go on, a little background…
All seasoned musicians of the western and west-central PA music scene, the four members of Radio 45 – multi-instrumentalist and singer C. Scott “Scotto” Gilbert, lead singer and lead guitarist Aaron “Double-A” Greer, lead singer and guitarist Gary Bickerstaff, and drummer, percussionist and singer Mark Wesesky – had interacted with each other through previous band projects. Aaron and Scott worked together in the Aaron Greer Band, which gained notoriety in Christian music circles with their 2008 album “Agents Of Change” and their update of U2’s “I Will Follow.” Mark and Scott worked together during their college days at Clarion University in the band Mainstream. The group’s latest addition, Gary, worked with Scott during the 1980s in the band Ten Till Destiny.
When these four musicians converged to form Radio 45, they decided to do things a little differently than your conventional band set-up. They concentrated on music first, and generating a portfolio of the best songs they could assemble and record – including their own creations, plus working with songwriters in Nashville and Los Angeles to license the very best songs they could get their hands on.
According to Scott, “The immediate focus is to create and record great music that we can use to build a stream portfolio. We want to record 50 songs between now and 2030, and we want each song to be special, reflective of our influences and who we are. And we hope they’re songs that people will really enjoy and will have legs in that they’ll last for decades to come in the future.”
Mark added, “It’s definitely a different mentality from bands saying ‘We just formed together and we’re going to play in bars and then we’re going to learn songs and then we’re going to try to release them and maybe hope they do something’…This is like throwing all those rulebooks out the window. Well, has anybody ever done this? I never really approached music like this before. We’re interpreters, we’re also the performers, but we’re also going to do our own thing and yet pay tribute to what was on that demo and make it our own. It’s definitely a different mindset.”
In describing their overall sound, the members of Radio 45 call their endeavor a work in progress, as they develop their own identity while navigating the waters of a changing music industry to figure out where they stand, and how best to succeed. “The internet has changed the way that music is produced and
By Jim Price
consumed, and we’re trying to figure out where our place in that new architecture is,” said Scott. “Streaming is here to stay, and for artists and musicians like ourselves, it’s hard to make money from streaming – Apple and Spotify pay half a cent per stream. So we’re trying to figure out how to best play in that arena and move forward as an artistic, creative unit and be able to support ourselves at the same time.”
Mike Hand of Virgin EMI Records said, “’Feels Like Summer’ is a sweet little smash of a tune, and can’t wait to hear more of what Radio 45 have in store!” According to another listener, “I could easily see this song being part of an all-American rom-com movie soundtrack.”
At present, Radio 45 is issuing their music as single songs, given the current music industry trend of being a singles-driven market. According to Scott, an EP is in the works. The group’s
current game plan is to release small batches of songs to see what they will do.
And that’s where the “science” comes in…Radio 45 takes an analytical approach to their music and how it is received. They are very interested in listener feedback to their song material to determine what is and is not working, and they study the numbers to determine their songs’ success. According to Scott, “How do you know if someone likes your music? There are bands out there that say, ‘Hey, we know what you want to hear.’ We don’t know what people want to hear. We know what we think they might like, and we’ll create that music and put it out there. But we will measure very carefully what people like, what they don’t like in our music. And we have the tools to be able to do this pretty accurately. So if you’re listening to one of our songs, and you like it or you don’t like it, let us know on social media. We’re watching, we’re listening, and we’ll be glad to take that feedback and act on it when we’re able.”
Radio 45’s music is rooted in the members’ influences, spanning 1960s hitmakers like the Beatles and the Monkees to 1970s arena rock favorites like Kiss and Cheap Trick, but channeling those influences through a modern rock/pop lens into something fresh and contemporary. According to Gary, “If I had to call it something, I think I’d call it modern rock. I think it’s got a real, cutting-edge sound, but at the same time it’s kind of informed by all of our influences, which are decidedly not modern – like Kiss and Cheap Trick and the Beatles.”
Aaron added, “I’m a fan of music that’s accessible to an average listener. And that’s what I do like about our songs, that there is a little something there that is familiar and accessible for everybody…The songs we’ve been recording have a newness about them; they are original songs. I appreciate hearing music that’s brand new that I can also put a reference to.”
One of Radio 45’s first song creations, recently issued before the start of the warm weather season, is “Feels Like Summer,” a catchy piece of power pop where thoughts of a special woman’s kiss trigger reflections about warm weather and fun times. Joining Radio 45 on this recording are studio guests Danny Sharrow on backing vocals and Mark Matthews on piano. The song can be heard on the group’s website, radio45.net, as well as on multiple streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon and more.
Early reaction to “Feels Like Summer” has been favorable.
Besides generating songs, Radio 45 also performs them live, and has developed an efficient yet potent stage performance. In describing their performance, Mark said, “It’s practiced, it’s all together… we pack as much as we can and give the people what they want.” During their show, Radio 45 takes their strongest song material and delivers it with enthusiasm, giving the audience just enough to make them want more.
The group usually performs as an opener for interesting bands that people want to see, including touring acts and tribute shows. Several of their performances thus far have happened at Pittsburgh’s Hard Rock Café on Station Square. According to Gary, “We really want people to be pleasantly surprised when they come to see the headlining act they were going to see, and when they see Radio 45 open they come away thinking they were really good, and they were surprised. That’s the feedback we have been getting so far, the ‘I didn’t expect that, that was really good.’”
Radio 45 will be a frequent flyer at Hard Rock Café in the coming weeks – opening for Texas blues-rock performer Chris Duarte on June 7th, and The Crystal Ship (Doors tribute) on June 30th. They also will open for Meet Loaf (Meatloaf tribute) at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille in Warrendale on July 21st.
The journey has been fun for Radio 45 so far. The group has established a strong chemistry both as music creators and onstage performers. Their goals and mission are different from their past projects, and they are excited about the future and its possibilities. Give Radio 45 a listen, and come see them live. According to Scott, “We’re here for you. We hope you like what we do. Give us a listen, give us some feedback. We’re listening, and we hope we produce something that you like.”

Just like last month, it’s raining as I write this month’s article. And just like last month, April was a busy month with some great music and great friends...and some bands that I had the pleasure of seeing and photographing for the first time which is always a blast for me. Of the fifteen acts I photographed this month, nine of them were new to my lens. I also got to stop in at a new (well, reopening) venue as well which is always cool.
My first trip out for the month was to the recently reopened Underground LIVE (formerly Gullifty’s of Camp Hill). Opening up the evening was a band I’ve been looking forward to covering for a while, The Cretins. Silent Paul and the guys did an awesome job of paying tribute to who some would call the ultimate punk rock band, The Ramones. Belting out some of my favorites including Sedated, Blitzkreig Bop, Sheena Is a Punk
HOT & DANGEROUS
Rocker and more, this was just a blast. Coming out on stage next was a band that I recently found out has been around the Central PA area for 10 years now – Hot and Dangerous. This cover band has a wide range of genres in their repertoire, and they do it all so well. Some of my favorites from their set included Oh Well, The Chain, and Lay Down. Any fan of rock over the last 4 or 5 decades will have a great time listening to these folks. Speaking of Underground LIVE, I have to say I was really impressed with the place. The staff was awesome, the lighting and sound were better than I expected, and it’s just a great place to go to checkout more of our local music scene. Check out their Facebook page for upcoming shows...I know I’ll definitely be going back.
A few nights later we headed down to the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon to see my buddies Kevin and Andy play an acoustic show as Shine Through The Shade. Covering songs like Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door, Lovesong, Kryptonite, Faith and a ton of others, as well as taking requests from the crowd, the guys had a blast playing on the small stage for an appreciative crowd. The following weekend I headed across the county to the Shermans Creek Inn in Shermansdale for a band that owner Troy had been working for two years to get in there to play.
Based out of Lancaster and playing for 21 years, the Screamin Daisys finally came to the Creek to party! This dual female-fronted party band covered music of multiple genres and eras: You Oughta Know, X’s & O’s, Hate Myself, and Push It just to name a few. The Daisys had the place packed and had a great crowd of people up dancing and singing along with them.
The next day I went down to Lovedrafts Brewing in Mechanicsburg for the Nu Metal Tour 2 and an evening of high energy tunes brought to us once again by Nick and 717 Enter-

tainment LLC. Starting out the evening was Heartbent, a young Maryland based Emo/Pop/Rock band that did a great job setting the bar for the evening in terms of energy with their hard driving melodies. Second band up was Defending Cain, a West Virginia based Nu Metal rock band that I’ve heard of, but didn’t have the pleasure of seeing until now. These guys had an awesome sound with vocals ranging from deep screams to rap and rock singing. Coming out third was Bakersfield California based Adema. While they were missing lead singer Ryan Shuck (congrats on the birth of his new baby!), but the rest of the guys did a great job carrying on with songs like Unstable, Close Friends, and Immortal. Fourth in the lineup was a band who’s music I’m very familiar with, and was very thankful to cover for my first time last year at the Rock On The Hill Music Festival – Tantric. Hugo and the boys tour the stage up with with a setlist of songs that frequently show up in my playlist like Astounded and Breakdown. It was an absolute pleasure seeing them perform again. Coming out next was a band that...while I knew the name, and was more than familiar with one of their songs, that was really all I knew of them. Crazy Town hit the stage with an almost frantic, high energy set that had the crowd rocking, and ended it with their ever-familiar “Butterfly”. Rounding out the evening was headliner Hed PE. Bringing their unique fusion of Rap and Metal to the stage with songs like Blackout, Sophia, and Peer Pressure... they had the crown slamming and singing along with them for the entire set. Once again, 717 Entertainment brought a great show to a great venue!
The following week Wendy and I headed down to Hook & Flask in Carlisle for some dinner, drinks and relaxing tunes

and proud to call friends. Starting out the evening was Dinosaurs In Paris. Louis and the boys brought their Pop/Punk originals to the stage and lit it up. I’ve enjoyed these guys since I first caught them a few years ago and they get better each time I see them. I also should mention they have some of the cutest fans I’ve seen, bass player Jesse’s young son and daughter came out for the show throwing down right in front of the stage with everyone else. The memories I saw them create that evening will last a lifetime. Next up was Lyndhurst bringing their Pop/Punk/Emo originals to the stage with a huge energy that sorta belies the whole “emo” part of their description LOL. Their songs are all about life, different

aspects of it, and are easily relatable to most people. They played a great setlist including several of my favorites: Jaded, I’m Sorry For The Way I Am, and Messy. Third on the bill for the evening was another band needing little introduction in these pages: Observe The 93rd. Derek and the guys definitely had their crowd there, dancing and singing along to their originals like Nightraid, Simulation, and Hypnotic. Headlining the evening is my friends in Sink In. Originally from Pennsylvania and now based in LA, Tighe and the guys rounded out the evening in style with their all original Pop/Rock tunes. I hadn’t seen them in about two years now I think, and this time they had a new drummer Sam that somehow managed to multiply the awesome energy this band already had. With constantly changing lighting, smoke/vapor machines, and the guys moving around on stage more than a pack of 12 year olds high on Mountain Dew, they’re always a challenge and absolute blast to photograph. If you haven’t seen any or all of these bands, I can’t recommend enough that you do.
I’ve got a couple shows already lined up to cover next month, including the 2nd annual Rock On The Hill Music Festival in Hanover. Twenty or so bands on two stages over the course of the day on May 13th, including locals acts like Brenden
Starr, Coal, Faith Noel, JHR and Heroes 4 Ransom, as well as bands like Sponge, Flaw, and Trapt...this festival has music, food, games and activities for everyone and I can’t wait to experience it again.
So there it is, my month of music through my eyes and ears. Just a reminder: if you’ve got a show coming up that I should see; make sure to send me an invite, shoot me an email or a message, let me know about it. Venues: please don’t hesitate to reach out to me as well. The majority of the shows that I go and shoot I find out about through invites from all of you or your friends. Hit me up on facebook: @chrisriderphotography or email: chrisriderphotography@gmail.com, stop me if you see me out and say hi. Until next month...go find some live music and give them and the venue your support, they truly need it more now than they ever did.

In last month’s article I was raving about the return of warmer weather and the return of live music to the outdoors. But outdoor live music during this time of year has a risk factor, as rain and the last vestiges of winter cold can still wreak havoc on early season outdoor events. As I write this, I’m looking forward to doing emceeing duties at one outdoor festival event and attending another outdoor event this weekend (the last weekend in April). The forecast says rain, heavy at times, both days. But the show must go on, and I’ll plan and prepare accordingly.
All of the shows I attended since last month’s deadline were indoors, and thus no rain…One of the big highlights was attending the 4th annual Central Pennsylvania Music Awards (CPMA’s) and Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in late March at the Hershey Theatre. Witnessing who took away top honors in the 2022
CPMA’s was again exciting, as awards were presented live for 35 different categories; 11 additional awards were presented during the pre-show red carpet event in
the theatre’s lobby area. Multiple award winners included Cody Tyler & Gypsy Convoy, taking awards for Best Country Band and Album/Ep of the Year for their “Stare Your Demons Down” album; Bobby Gentilo, taking the awards for Best Blues Band and Best New Band; LeahBeth Evans of The Frost Duo, who won Best Female Vocalist while the duo won Best Jazz Band/Artist; and Hunter Root won the Best Songwriter award, while his band, Medusa’s Disco, captured the Best Rock Band award. This year’s Whitey Noll Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to long-
time sound production professionals The Clair Brothers. For a total list of award winners, visit the website www. cpmhof.com. The awards were presented in between Hall Of Fame inductions; famous for their 1971 Top-20 hit song “Timothy,” The Buoys were the first band inducted; three of the group’s surviving members received the award and performed acoustic versions of both “Timothy” and the follow-up single, “Give Up Your Guns.” Inducted immediately after them was Harrisburg-based band The Legends, which Dan Hartman was affiliated with before he left to join the Edgar Winter Group. The next inductees were York-based 1950s and 60s soul and doo wop group The QuinTones, who performed their 1958 nationwide Top-20 hit “Down the Aisle of Love. Although not present, Poison frontman Bret Michaels and jazz artist Steve Rudolph were recognized for their inductions. Breaking Benjamin was then inducted into the Hall Of Fame; guitarist Aaron Fink, bassist Mark Klepaski and drummer
Jeremy Hummel received their award and thanked the audience for their support during the past two decades, and the group Ignite The Fire performed a rendition of Breaking Benjamin’s “Breath.” The final induction to close the night was presented to Harrisburg-based 1970s pop and funk group The Maxwell Project. The current group continues to entertain audiences with classic R&B, funk, soul and dance music; known as Maxwell in the 1970s, the group issued three albums and enjoyed regional airplay with the hit songs “Radiation Funk” (created in the aftermath of the Three Mile Island nuclear incident) and “A New Star.” The Maxwell Project performed “A New Star” and ended the night with their fusion of Morris Day & the Time’s “Jungle Love” and Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.”
California rockers (hed)PE returned to McGarvey’s in Altoona last month, headlining a Monday night triple-bill. Altoona’s Hate Grenade led off the bill before I arrived; New York City’s Rebelmatic was just getting started when I entered the venue. The rowdy roster of vocalist Creature, guitarist Alkatraz, bassist
Karnage and drummer Ramsey Jones lit up the crowd with their high-powered, all-out blend of funk, punk and hardcore. Their music was heavy and volatile, but it grooved and kept folks moving. I didn’t catch many of their song titles, but some of Rebelmatic’s songs this night included “Blood and Gold” and “Blown Away.” (hed)PE then ignited the house with their feisty mix of rock, punk, hip-hop and regcontinued on next page...

gae. Frontman Jared Gomes, guitarist Nathan Javier, bassist Kurt Blankenship and drummer Jeremiah “Trauma” Stratton did songs from throughout their career, opening with “Game Over” and proceeding through such numbers as “Peer Pressure,” “Killing Time,” “Let’s Ride,” “Pac Bell,” “Sophia” and more. The group ran the gamut from intense to grooving, with Jared breaking out his melodica from time to time. (hed)PE’s homestretch included their version of the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated” (from their latest album, “70s Hits from the Pit”), followed by their popular radio song “Bartender” and the finale, an extended slow-burning take on “Renegade,” with Nathan riding the song’s repetitive riff to set up for an explosive finish.
I also caught some local musical theatre at McGarvey’s last month, as “McGarvey’s Theatre” hosted 39 Tigers Productions’ presentation of “The Great American Trailer Park Musical.” Directed by Rich McGarvey and Tony Malvoisin, the two-act musical – written by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso – presented a hilarious
adventure set in the fictitious Armadillo Acres Trailer Park in Florida, weaving a tale of abduction, a stripper, infidelity and magic marker-huffing that would make Jerry Springer quiver. Obviously, music was a part of this production, and the cast – Quinn Allen as “Betty,” Andrea Taylor as “Lin,” Ally Piper as “Pickles,” Michelle Barnes as “Jeanie,” Coryell Barlow as “Pippi,” Travis Ross as “Norbert” and Jake Kibler as “Duke” – all displayed excellent singing voices on the various songs that helped to connect the story and transition between scenes. The pit band behind the music – keyboardist Jessica Heckman, guitarist Nate Nagle, bassist Aaron Kenawell and drummer Mike Vatavuk – sounded tight and consistent throughout the production. Theatre returns to McGarvey’s in August with 39 Tigers Productions’ presentation of “Glengarry Glenn Ross.”
Mother Nature attempted a bad April Fool’s joke with violent wind and thunderstorms on April 1, but that did not thwart me from catching my first look at Mr. Pocket as they performed at the LaunchPad in Philipsburg. Formed several years ago, Mr.
Pocket – lead singer and guitarist Nate Sopic, bassist and singer Jason Sopic, lead guitarist and singer Tom Zattoni, and drummer and singer Mike Hughes – introduced the large audience to their wide-ranging selection of rock, blues and Americana original songs and covers. Their setlist was diverse, as Mr. Pocket tastefully tackled numbers from Stevie Wonder, The Band, Queens Of The Stone Age, Gin Blossoms, Oasis, the Pixies, Dire
Straits, Tom Petty, Wallflowers, John Hiatt, Peter Gabriel, Jason Isbell, Drive By Truckers and much more. The group was vocally strong, and their instrumental arrangements and musicianship provided consistency and their own stamp on the material they performed. Some of their unexpected song highlights include versions of Mudcrutch’s “The Wrong Thing to Do,” Uncle Tupelo’s “New Madrid,” Warren Zevon’s “A Certain Girl,” REM’s “What’s The Frequency Kenneth,” Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s “Almost Cut My Hair” and more. Mr. Pocket kept the audience engaged and excited, enough so that the crowd called for more at night’s end, resulting in a three-song encore to cap the evening. LaunchPad owner Shawn Inlow’s house band, Stone Man, will perform the release show for their debut CD, “Heartbreaks,” at the LaunchPad on May 6.
After completing my monthly PA Musician delivery route through Cambria County last month, I spent the evening enjoying some Johnstown area performers, beginning with Justin Garman at the Stadium Pub & Grille. I caught Justin’s last set; brandishing
acoustic guitar and harmonica, Justin sang a variety of original songs, 1960s and 70s favorites. His song list was interesting, as he performed a number of songs not often covered on area stages, and did them in his own hearty and expressive style. Some of his highlights included a version of Elvis Costello’s “Deep Dark Truthful Mirror,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Blinded By the Light,” Jimmy Ruffin’s “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” merging into the traditional song “I Bid You Goodnight,” and the night-ending audience clap-along version of Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me.” Justin also sang numbers from Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, the Allman Brothers and more. Justin continues to be a frequent flyer on Johnstown area acoustic stages.
A rising name during recent months in the Johnstown area music scene has been The SuperAlrights, who I checked out last month at the Windber Hotel in Windber. Wil Fine plays bass, Mike Lux plays guitar and Kraig Maldet plays drums; all three sing. “The world’s okayest alt-rock band,” The SuperAlrights
specialize in 1990s-era rock. Their song list this night featured a blend of favorites plus a few surprises. The group did plentiful 90s favorites from Foo Fighters, Oasis, Nirvana, Goo Goo Dolls, Sponge, Bush, Gin Blossoms, Everclear, Toadies, Collective Soul and others. They also pulled out some almost-forgotten 1990s gems like School Of Fish’s “Three Strange Days,” Dishwalla’s “Counting Blue Cars” and Screaming Trees’ “Nearly

Lost You.” The SuperAlrights had fun playing all of it, and the Windber crowd fed off that enthusiasm and kept the dance floor busy through the course of the night. The SuperAlrights have become frequent flyers on Johnstown area stages, and plan to expand their reach to other areas in the months ahead. They return to the Windber Hotel on May 27.
OK Otter and Donny Burns & the 3rd Degree teamed up for a double-bill last month at The Bar in Boalsburg. This was my first time seeing OK Otter, who has established a steady presence on Centre region stages. Singer and guitarist Mike Doyle, keyboardist Joe Tombasco and drummer Rob Bonsell introduced a distinc-
tive, piano-driven alt-pop rock sound with catchy melodies and often playful lyrics. OK Otter performed several numbers from their 2022 album “Dad Rock 2,” including “Drinking Outside,” “Richie Tozier” and “Wendy Peffercorn,” plus newer numbers such as “A Little Bit More,” “Knock at the Door” and “Midnight Mass” (inspired by the Netflix TV show). The group threw in a few covers toward set’s end, giving their own flavor to Burt Bacharach/Hal David’s “Always Something
There to Remind Me,” Dead Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” and Dire Straits’ “Walk Of Life.” Donny Burns & the 3rd Degree followed with three sets. Namesake Donny on lead vocals and guitar, Nick Stahlman on guitar and vocals, bassist James Arroway and drummer Rob Chisholm performed all original songs during their first set; playing the entirety of their 2020 debut album “Satisfied” before introducing four new songs from their forthcoming new release – “Polythemus,” “Ripple,” “Fear and Trust” and a currently untitled newest number. The group fired up the rocking dance party in their latter sets, doing favorites from Guns N’Roses, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Van Morrison, Sublime, a dance-inducing rock, funk and disco medley and more. Donny Burns & the 3rd Degree will anchor the 10th annual Wam Bam Mountain Jam near Port Matilda on July 1.
After departing The Bar, I headed into downtown State Col-
lege to check out Lowjack during their weekly Friday performance at The Brewery. The house was packed due to being the Friday eve before Penn State’s annual Blue-White football game. Lowjack kept the crowd festive – lead singer and bassist Jason Davoli, guitarist and fiddle player Dan Collins, keyboardist Joe Tombasco (who played with OK Otter earlier) and drummer Jake Shaffer played a wide variety of classic and modern rock and pop favorites, original songs and requests. The Brewery crowd partied down as Lowjack cranked out the favorites, including songs from Billy Joel, The Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Modest Mouse, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many more. The group also honored requests for Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge,” Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” and Matt Maeson’s “Hallucinogenics.” Guest Nate Cutshall joined the band onstage a few times to wail harmonica, including on versions of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and the Wallflowers’ “One Headlight.” And Lowjack did several of their own tunes, including “In My Head,” “One Last Kiss” and “I’m Coming Home to You.” Lowjack is a mainstay on downtown State College stages, playing every Thursday and Friday at the Brewery, and Saturdays at the
Phyrst.
After releasing their double-album set “Saints and Souls” Volumes 1 and 2, the Jeremy Edge Project returned to Altoona’s 4D’s Lounge in late March to celebrate music from the albums and multiple blues and blues-rock gems. Jeremy on lead vocals and guitar, John DeLowery on bass and Ray Gieda on drums did many bold and blues-rocking songs from the new albums, including “No Way Home,” “Ghosts of the Living,” “Better Way,” “South of the Border,” the soulful “Coral Castle,” “Move On” and others. They also triggered dancing with many of their blues-rooted cover fare, including numbers from Cream, Doors, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, Blackfoot, Black Crowes, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Led Zeppelin, Free, Jimi Hendrix and more; they also gave the slow-dancing crowd a treat with a version of The Commodores’ “Easy.” The Jeremy Edge Project again gave a powerful performance; Jeremy demonstrated his guitar skills early and often, generating some amazing solos and shredding along the way. And the rhythm section of John and Ray delivered the rumble behind Jeremy; Ray sounded especially thunderous on the group’s night-ending rendition of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.” If you haven’t yet checked them out, the Jeremy Edge Project returns to the 4D’s Lounge on May 27.
“Being Independent is Being Canadian American.”
The full-band edition of Altoona’s Walkney took the stage at the 4D’s Lounge in late March. Originally slated as a double-bill, sickness forced the other band to bow out, opening the door for the debut performance by solo singer and guitarist Dominic Frucella. Dominic made the most of his opportunity, prompting applause as he did a mixture of acoustic originals and favorites. His style encompassed popular folk, country and soul; his originals this night included “Country Blues” and “Southbound,” and he did nice work on songs from Bill Withers, Chris Stapleton and John Denver, helped out on a few by banjo player Mike Wallace. Walkney – singer, guitarist and founder Derek Mrdjenovich, bassist Nate Nagle and drummer David Applas – performed two sets featuring numerous original songs. The general style was hard-rocking modern pop. Some of the original numbers were newer songs such as “I Don’t Care,” “Is
Anybody Out There,”
“Because of Love” and Derek’s solo acoustic number “Run Away,” which he sent out to his Aunt Marsha. Walkney also did a

few covers, including their own distinctive rendition of the Steve Miller Band’s hit “Fly Like an Eagle.”
The area’s youth band movement has been on the rise during the past couple of years, and I took my first look at one of the latest young bands to generate some buzz, Havoc, as they performed last month at Cresson’s Shovel Head Tavern. Six members strong, the Nanty Glo-based group kept the audience happy with their mix of classic and southern rock favorites. Waylon on lead vocals and guitar, lead guitarist Wyatt, singers Darian and Abby Rae, bassist Johnny and drummer Jozi Lee showed their skills and versatility on a range of material, spanning tunes from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hootie & the Blowfish, Tracy Chapman, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Faster Pussycat, Kid Rock, Georgia Satellite and more. Havoc also introduced a few of their own original songs, such as “Gone” and “Nashville Blues.” Other highlights included Waylon and Abby Rae blending their voices on Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow’s “Picture” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” Abby Rae’s strong voice on the Cranberries’ “Zombie,” the audience singalong version of Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places,” and –after the Cresson crowd demanded an encore – the ever-popular “Tennessee Whiskey” to close out the night.
Bedford’s Bella Terra Vineyards recently moved to a new address, and I visited the new location last month to catch the latter half of the performance by the father-and-son tandem of Rhyne and Tabyn McCormick on the outside deck. Rhyne sang and played acoustic guitar, while Tabyn jammed on electric guitar. Together they entertained onlookers with a mix of classic rock and pop covers done in their own style, plus a few originals. Some of their surprises included a slow and bluesy acoustic take on Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” to open the third set, versions of the Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down,” Prince’s “Little Red Corvette,” Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly,” John Brim/Van Halen’s “Ice Cream Man,” Dwight Yoakam’s “Fast As You,” plus numbers from Van Morrison, the Rolling Stones, John Mellencamp and more. They pulled out one of Rhyne’s Red Eye Kings original songs, “Secret,” with Tabyn having fun with the reverb on his guitar, and another original song, “Spark in Your Heart.” Rhyne and Tabyn return to Bella Terra Vineyards in June.
And I was again reminded that every weekly episode of Felix & the Hurricanes’ Sunday shindig at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern packs a different musical adventure. I caught two episodes last month…Guest Dave Villani added his signature organ groan to the Hurricanes’ April 2 performance, joining lead Hurricane
Felix Kos on guitar and vocals, Bob Watters on drums and vocals, and the group’s Sunday night bassist, Pat McGinnis. Dave displayed his jazz chops during the ‘Canes version of “Freeborn Man,” and the frequent solo trade-offs between Dave and Felix provided constant excitement…And when Felix lost his voice before the April 16 episode, guest guitarist Tom Fronauer and bass-
ist Pat handled the lion’s share of singing duties, with guest John Shimko stepping in to contribute his best Molly Hatchet growl on versions of “It’s All Over Now” and “Dreams I’ll Never See.” The area music scene was saddened in recent weeks with two passings…The Altoona area music scene was saddened by the passing of longtime area musician Barry Yeager on April 5; he was 73. Barry was the owner of Panda Productions, which provided sound and lighting for various events. Barry’s involvement with area band projects extends back to the 1970s. He most recently was the keyboard player for Altoona-based classic rock group Kickin.’…And longtime area musician Kyle Pickett passed away late last month. Kyle fronted and played guitar with numerous band projects during the past several decades; including Amacitia in the 1980s, the Meenies, his own self-named band and others. Kyle made a number of recordings of his original music, including several vinyl albums with Amacitia. He was a popular fixture in the regional music scene and collaborated with others. News and notes…Organizers of Johnstown’s Classic Vinyl Concert Series have announced the albums they will perform for their next concert. Comprised of musicians throughout the greater Johnstown and surrounding areas, the Classic Vinyl Concert Band will next take on both Michael Jackson’s 1982 album “Thriller” and Prince’s 1984 album “Purple Rain”; the concert takes place on Oct. 28 at the State Theater of Johnstown, and tickets go on sale May 5…The Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest
continues to accept entries for its 2023 edition. Songs must have a Pennsylvania namesake, theme or reference, and can be about a location, person, event or story tied to Pennsylvania. Deadline for entries is May 15; winners for the top three songs will receive cash prizes plus the opportunity to perform their songs during the 2023 Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival at Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork June 15-17. For more information, visit www.smokedcountryjam.com/phsc/... Altoona-based punk rockers Abstentious announced that guitarist Brayden Adams is departing the group to continue his academic pursuits; the group will continue on, and will release their new album, “The Album... Ever,” on May 5, with a release show (and Brayden’s last show with the group) on May 7 at McGarvey’s…Stacy & the Rejects are seeking a new drummer and bass player to start playing with the group in late summer or fall; the group’s current drummer and bass player, Mike Davis and Josh Yahner, are leaving the group to concentrate on their original music endeavors and their Alice In Chains tribute project, Deny Your Maker…Singer Ryen Beam announced that he recently parted ways with Altoona area indie rockers The Nerves; Ryen left the group to focus priorities on his health and family…Homer City-based rockers Post Traumatik have completed recording sessions for their forthcoming brand new album, called “Saint Traumatik”…and Wax Mekanix, the creative alter ego of former Nitro drummer and singer Tim
Wilson, has submitted his new album to Philadelphia-based indie record label Electric Talon Records; that album should be available later this year.

HED PE - McGarvey’s
The Hed PE Nu Metal Madness Tour II -2023 came through hitting Central Pennsylvania hard in the month of April. I was
HATE GRENADE - Chuck Lavera -McGarvey’s
fortunate to see three of the four shows in Pennsylvania. One of which was only a Hed PE show. If you didn’t catch any of the madness, you missed out. After this experience I can see why they called it Nu Metal Madness. The tour started March 30thand will end May 13th in Garden City, California.
First stop was “Stage West” in State College. The bands were Hed PE , Adema, Tantric and a local hard rock band called,
ADEMA -Stage West - Mark Chavez
Relic Hearts. This was the first time seeing Adema , from California. The crowd including myself definitely enjoyed their original music. Hope to see them more in our area. Tantric never disappoints! Playing their past hits to their new songs. Filling

in for Jaron Gulino on most of the tour is Rick Reynolds. Jaron has been involved in multiple bands with the most recent being George Lynch. The evening ended with Hed PE. How can you not resist to move when Hed PE hits the stage.
Second stop was “Lovedrafts” in Mechanicsburg. This was a full line up and then some. As if Hed PE , Adema, Crazy Town and Tantric was already a killer line up, it wasn’t enough for the promoter, Nick Meyers. He added two more bands Heartbent from Maryland and Defending Cain from West Virginia.
The energy was high throughout the night from both the bands and the audience. Members of the bands mingling in with the crowd, people snapping pictures and capturing vids with their cell phones as the music played in the air, just as it should be at every show! I don’t think I have seen so many photographers in a venue at the same time. People definitely left with endless memories.
Third stop was a Hed PE show at “McGraveys” in Altoona with two supporting bands. First band was a local Nu-Metal
Band called, Hate Grenade. Hate Grenade had recently returned from their own East Coast run just in time for the Hed PE show. Up next was the band, Rebelmatic from New York. They are a hybrid of punk, hardcore and aggressive funk of their own. Lastly was Hed PE. Their vibe is one of their own that you can get into and takes you to different place mentally.
All the bands brought it to the stage with their music, energy and presence. I hope there will be a Nu-Metal Madness 3. ~ photos on pg. 26-27 by Darlene Hassinger Band Photography

Coexist Glass Gallery Unity through Community
Located at 310 S. Front Street in Steelton PA the Coexist Glass Gallery has been transformed from a bland store front into a whimsical piece of amazing artwork. Just stopping down to check out the amazing glass work covering the entire building is worth the trip. The owner, Shawn Gold has given local artists a chance to shine! Literally all over his store front. The Mosaic was completed by Natasha Moraga and Carrie Stroope as well as many volunteers from the community. You can spend hours looking over the
artwork and still see something new each time.
The amazing art doesn’t stop on the outside, as the inside of the store is a visual overload; Glass pipes, pendants, anything you could imagine made out of glass. There is a glass blowing studio and if you’re lucky you may even catch an artist at work. It doesn’t stop with Glass. They also have crystals galore along with local made jewelry. Top it off with all your favorite smoking accessories, and a Coffee shop. That’s right you can even grab a cup of Joe in the process. The Coffee shop, dubbed the “Melted Pot Coffee Shop”, will be up and running by Summertime.
Shawn has also started Open Mic Nights Thursdays 7-11pm. They have a nice stage area with a drum kit and Shawn is also giving musicians a place to go hang out and jam, that’s not your typical bar scene. Along with the Open Mic they are also doing a “BYOV” or bring your own vinyl night on Tuesdays starting in May (dates and times to be announced). Also in May they will be bringing back world
renowned mask maker Jeff Semmerling with over 35 years of experience in making masks. He creates true masterpieces and will be creating a new duo to go along with the ‘Cheech and Chong’ masks he made in April.
But wait there is MORE!… The Coexist team is also starting a farmer’s market on Wednesdays from 3-7p and Saturdays 8am-1pm. If you’re interested in setting up a table please contact Shawn at Coexist for all the details. Or just stop down at Coexist and grab some local goods and check out all that Coexist has to offer. Remember this is not just a “Smoke Shop” this is a place where you can hang out and relax with like minded people and be part of the Community that they are building through unity. Check out the ad on the next page and if you mention that you saw the Coexist ad in the PA Musician Magazine you will receive 15% OFF your purchase (some exclusions apply)
