Business Traveller India talks to Ann D’Silva, best-selling Indian author. Currently living in Istanbul, she is a humanitarian and works for the empowerment of rural women in India with her initiative ‘India Heart’. From her books’ series — Sand and Sea, Footprints in the Sand is currently a bestseller. e second book titled Child of Two Worlds was released this year. She has also released a compilation of poems called Verses of A Risen Phoenix.

Tell us about your journey as an author

“I’m in love with journeys of maybe and could be.” Having been a traveller for two decades, when I chose to leave the corporate world and pursue my CSR journey and writing, I wanted to create a niche for myself as a travel writer.

As a travel writer, I write about the complete ethos and history of a country to give my audience an experience before they ever travel to that country.

What are some of your favourite destinations to visit I have many favourites particularly places with rich cultural, historic and archeological stories to tell, like Florence. Turkey with its ancient historical and archaeological stories and the romance of Paris also intrigue me.

What are some of the must-haves in your handbag

These days a mask and sanitiser is on everyone’s list without a mention. But a must have is a map of the city and a little

research of do’s and don’ts culturally before travel. I keep copies of the passport and a journal to pen all the special moments too.

What kind of a travels do you enjoy - laid back and relaxed or busy and hectic

I always like laid back and never group travel packages. I like my time to explore a place at ease and enjoy its local flavour that my senses need to soak it in so I can tell the story of that city through a poem or prose.

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, appeals to all kinds of travellers with its diverse tourism offerings

Towering skyscrapers, a turquoise sea, bustling markets and a ray of positivity — welcome to Abu Dhabi. The capital and second most populous city of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi’s rapid urbanisation in the past few decades has given it the stature of one of the most powerful and futuristic metropolises of the world. Sitting in the centre of the globe, Abu Dhabi is easily accessible from almost all key hubs — European, Asian, African, American or Australian. And now that the UAE is open to all vaccinated travellers without quarantine, the emirate has become the “go to” destination for families, leisure and business travellers alike. Credit goes to Abu Dhabi’s Go Safe certification programme that was announced back in 2020. A strategy to revive the tourism sector post the pandemic, the Go Safe Certification enforces global standards of safety and cleanliness at hotels, attractions, and venues across the emirate.

“Abu Dhabi is setting a new standard for best practices in tourism, following the high praise that the UAE has received for the proactive approach through which the government has addressed the current situation. As we look forward to reviving tourism in the capital, we aim to not only meet, but to exceed all existing international benchmarks through a strategy that promotes consumer

safety in every step of the way; from the moment they land at our airports to their eventual departure. The launch of Go Safe goes hand-in-hand with the efforts of the Abu Dhabi government to combat the spread of diseases, which include widespread testing, city-wide sanitation, social distancing, and enhancing healthcare services,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, executive director of tourism and marketing, Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, during the launch of the initiative.

W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island became the first hotel to be certified under the emirate’s Go Safe certification programme. Today, most of the city’s establishments including hotels, malls, museums, theme parks, entertainment spots, family attractions and restaurants have received this label. With 90 per cent of Abu Dhabi’s population being vaccinated and rigorous hygiene standards being followed across the city, the emirate is not only safe but also an exciting destination to visit right now.

Even though the city has metamorphosed into a modern hub, its ancient roots and history are well preserved in its character and tourism. Abu Dhabi will surely mesmerise you with its architecture and draw you in with its antiquity. Its entertainment venues, natureoriented destinations and luxurious beaches will spoil you for choice.

LUXE WHEELS

WORDS BOB RUPANI

In October, I was asked to pick my “ ve favourite luxury SUVs” and now here is a selection of my “ ve favourite luxury sedans”. While SUVs may be the avour of the day and presently the most popular segment of vehicles, a luxury sedan has a charm and class all of its own. If a luxury SUV has street presence, a luxury sedan is all about style. And where a luxury SUV exudes strength, the luxury sedan exhibits its grace. A luxury SUV may have a commanding stance, but the luxury sedan glides along nonchalantly. One of the biggest and most important di erences between them is the body roll and ride quality. A SUV due to its body style is tall and has an upright stance and good ground clearance. ese result in a higher CG or

centre of gravity, the outcome of which is more body roll and body movement. In contrast, the sedan sits lower to the ground and corners more atly. e limited body movement also results in a far better ride quality. Yes, however good a luxury SUVs suspension may be, due to the inherent nature and purpose of its design, it can never deliver the supple and re ned ride comfort of a top of the line luxury sedan. Given this, if you are someone who wants the smoothest ride that isolates passengers from unpleasant bumps and vibrations, then a luxury sedan should be what you have in your sights.

And when you go shopping, you might want to consider my “favourite ve”. But please note, this list is largely based on my personal preferences.

MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS

For the longest time, the S-Class has been considered the “best car in the world” and Mercedes-Benz obviously place great pride in the ownership of this title. And to their credit, they do everything to ensure that the S-Class continues to retain this title with the passage of every new model and variant.

And it’s due to this that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the preferred choice of heads of states, business tycoons, sportspersons, movie stars and so on. In fact more leaders of countries use the Mercedes-Benz S- Class, than any other car.

e S-Class of course looks digni ed and elegant and glides along as if on a carpet of air. e occupants hardly feel what it’s going over and it’s also amongst the safest cars on the planet. e S-Class is packed with advanced state-of-the-art features that combine the best of engineering, electronics, computers and even advanced radar and satellite technology. And while the technology is all avant-garde, there is also the high quality traditionally handcra ed leather and wood in the interior. All of this makes the passenger compartment a great place to be and you are assured of being pampered with the nest luxurious comfort, available in an automobile. mercedes-benz.co.in

53 CARS business traveller india DECEMBER 2021 -JANUARY 2022 →

BMW 7 SERIES

e main challenger for the “best car in the world” title is the 7 Series. German car makers Mercedes and BMW have traditionally been rivals for a really long time, and the ght is ercest between the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

In recent times the S-Class has edged slightly ahead, but BMW keep trying so hard, that if it wasn’t for the S-Class, the 7 Series would be known as “ e Best Car in the World”. Honestly, so slim is the di erence between them that it all eventually boils down to personal preferences and choices. Which do you think looks better? What brand do you like? Or the fact that the handling of the BMW 7 Series is just a wee bit sharper than the S-Class.  But then the S-Class o ers a more plusher and comfortable ride. So do you choose ride over handling or vice versa. All these are matters of individual taste and liking. As far as I am concerned, the one thing that disappoints me about the BMW 7 Series is the consistent increase in the size of the front grille. Yes, it keeps getting taller and wider, with the introduction of every new version or model. bmw.in

AUDI A8

For quite a prolonged period of time, the rivalry remained con ned to the S-Class and 7 Series. en in the mid-90s Audi, another German automaker, introduced the A8 and leapfrogged into the battle for the crown of the best car in the world. And they came very well prepared using futuristic design and engineering due to which the Audi A8 was the rst car in the world to use a fully aluminium monocoque chassis. is lightweight metal was also used extensively in the body and all this advanced construction technology meant the Audi A8 was substantially lighter than its other two German opponents. e lower weight resulted in better engine performance and e ciency, and also superior agility.

Audi with the A8 had thrown a serious challenge to S-Class and 7 Series, and many customers were taken up by the advanced technology and fairly di erent looks and styling of the A8. And this continues to be the case till date. While the forte of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is known to be its safety and comfort, BMW try to position the 7 Series as a sportier luxury sedan. Unlike the other two, Audi chooses to promote its A8 as an all-rounder with advanced technology, great comfort, dynamism and e ciency. Frankly, the margin of di erence is so narrow, that I will repeat and say again, that it all depends on the penchants of the purchaser. audi.in

PORSCHE PANAMERA

While the Panamera is also made by a German car maker, it’s a completely di erent animal, when compared to the other three. is is mainly because Porsche has attained global fame for manufacturing the iconic 911, one of the best sports cars ever. erefore, the Porsche chromosomes have sporty performance and power inscribed on them. And like Porsche says, the Panamera o ers the thrills and performance of a sports car, with the comfort of a luxury sedan.

e shape and silhouette of the Panamera is distinctly Porsche, with a nice blend of sporty lines and prominent muscular sculpting. Even when it is stationary, the Porsche Panamera gives the impression of being a dynamic and powerful machine that can’t wait to get o the blocks. e moment you hit the accelerator, the 621 pedigree horses residing under the bonnet of the Panamera Turbo S gallop out in grand style and take it to 100 kmph in just 3.1 seconds! It reaches 200 kmph in a mere 11.2 seconds and the top speed is an eye-watering 315 kmph! ese are the kind of performance gures you expect in supercars, and not in a luxury sedan. It is this sporty performance that makes the Porsche Panamera so special. It actually is a proper sports car with the only di erence being that it has four doors and can seat four people in great comfort and luxury. porsche.com

MASERATI QUATTROPORTE

e rst four luxury sedans in this list are all built by German car manufactures and they boast the best of engineering, technology and cra smen. But they cannot match the Maserati Quattroporte’s easy elegance and typical Italian style. Yes, the Quattroporte oozes and radiates its unmatchable Italian elegance and the nely sculpted body has both grace and a certain amount of aggressiveness. In fact so exquisite is its exterior styling, that it’s easily the nicest looking luxury sedan in my “favourite ve” list.

e Quattroporte also has the performance that Maserati’s are known for, and what I love is the deep and sonorous exhaust note. e V8 engine speaks so sweetly, that if you are in the mood you can use your foot to conduct this orchestra of 580 horses, and create some magical mechanical music. e passenger compartment is well built too with an assortment of materials that include well nished metal accents, rich leather with a so feel, genuine wood with ne grains, and also modern materials like carbon bre- that is ve times stronger than steel and used in the construction of bullet proof jackets and also Formula One cars. maserati.com BTI

Here’s what you should have on your list for a short trip to this Swiss city

WORDS AKANKSHA MAKER

Arriving at Geneva railway station as my last stop in my one week trip in Switzerland, I enter with no expectations. Being a rst time visitor to Geneva, I open Google Maps and walk towards my hotel, and my premier stop for my two day sojourn in this city. It’s amazing how the entire culture, language and feel of a city can transform within hours on the Swiss railway; I departed from Zermatt which is Swiss-speaking town to the French-speaking Geneva. e capital of Genève canton, Geneva is in the far southwestern corner of Switzerland that juts into France. And if you’re wondering what followed, I handpick some of my experiences that should be on your bucket-list, in case you’re planning a trip to this beautiful city any time soon.

A hospitality leader talks about the importance of club lounges in today’s scenario

With the rise in focus on privacy and exclusive experiences, members-only niche spots are popping up all over the globe. Be it airlines, hotels, banks, airports, and now restaurants and bars, all have a clique club serving members and patrons. These exclusive clubs certainly carry a price tag but those who value these experiences don’t mind spending a few extra bucks.

When one talks about exclusive and elite clubs, a few things come to mind - opulent ambience, spectacular views, fabulous food and drinks, and a great vibe. The reasons for being a club member may vary, some guests may opt for these for luxury and networking, others may choose it for exclusivity to conduct private business meetings or some may prefer these for personalised service that helps them unwind and reform their wellbeing. Some members dish out extra currency to enjoy these experiences and a lucky few get complimentary upgrades and get a glimpse of this elite world.

The hospitality industry realised the importance of exclusive spaces early on and the concept of the club floor rooms and lounges originated. Combined with a premium lounge, meeting space, business centre and an exclusive reception, the club universe is often called a - hotel within a hotel.

Usually situated on higher floors with unparalleled views, club rooms are more luxurious and opulent. Staying in a club room encompasses a plethora of benefits such as upgraded bathroom amenities, premium minibars and additional features like espresso machines and high-end Bluetooth speakers. Since access to these floors and the club

lounge is restricted, guests can enjoy their stay in absolute tranquility. Whether one is travelling for work or leisure, standing in a queue at the reception of a busy hotel is something these guests can ill afford. The personalised service ensures express check-ins in the rooms or at the club lounge.

The elite club lounge generally features sweeping views of the landscape, a dedicated breakfast area for the discerning traveller, complimentary premium drinks, afternoon tea, a dining area to dish out a la minute delicacies upon request, a small library and 24-hour service for the elite few. Additionally, guests can also enjoy a boardroom for private meetings, express laundry and a personal concierge.

At Shangri-La, we understand that true luxury means quality time well spent. Whether travelling for business or pleasure, the Horizon Club offers an unparalleled level of personalised service.

Guests enjoy the Horizon Club’s unique spirit of genuine hospitality – with benefits including bespoke holiday and business planning from your personal concierge, as well as exclusive amenities and services including private and late check out options and an executive arrival service. Guests will also get access to the private Horizon Club Lounge which features daily breakfast, premium beverages and canapés, wifi and suit pressing as well as a selection of meeting facilities. The lounge is an ideal sanctuary after

a hectic workday for a business traveller and a perfect place to unwind and relax with loved ones over coffee and conversations on a holiday.

Customer loyalty has been a buzzword in the hospitality industry since time immemorial. It has become more relevant than ever in the prevailing business scenario. When the customer has a plethora of choices, personalisation makes all the difference. Club universe then becomes even more crucial as it can be instrumental in delivering memorable and bespoke experiences. In the true sense of the word, at times, one needs to ward off competition to secure business.

Addressing the customer by name, ensuring their preferences are fulfilled, providing a memorable arrival and departure experience are some of the ammunition in the Club floor operating team’s arsenal that can help them win this battle.

Human evolution over the years has taught us that the only thing permanent in the universe is ‘change’.

Customer expectations are ever-changing with the influx of social media. Guests want more memorable experiences and Instagrammable moments to post about. The key here is to go above and beyond, elevate already enhanced service standards, create joyful moments for guests, each and every time. After all, a delighted guest is a loyal guest. BTI

At Shangri-La, we understand that true luxury means quality time well spent

Long-term goals

A sustainable future beckons the aviation sector

Sustainability has become one of the key focus areas. The aviation industry is devoting their energies towards environmental sustainability for a long period. Airlines have started publishing environmental reports, launching carbonoffsetting schemes, setting strategic plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions and investing in sustainable products.

ECO-CONSCIOUS TRAVELLERS PREFER SUSTAINABILITY

While travel is returning to normalcy, the pandemic has changed the people travel. Reports suggest millennials are conscious about making sustainable travel decisions and are seeking more environment friendly travel options. A recent poll conducted by Booking.com indicates, more than half (53 per cent) of global travellers increasingly prefer to travel responsibly.

The aviation industry recognises this change and is determine to offer customers with a more sustainable way to travel. To achieve their goal of sustainable aviation and to mitigate the impact on climate, airlines continue to invest in fuel-efficient and noise reduction aircraft, sustainable aviation fuel and providing customers a way to offset their carbon emissions.

ADOPTING SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS

Aviation contributed less than 3 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions annually before the Covid-19 pandemic, but that number may rise as the industry continues to develop. As a hard-to-abate sector, the

industry takes an active and collaborative approach in driving innovations that eliminate carbon emissions. The ability to achieve this momentous task does not rest with airlines alone, having support from various stakeholders to help make it a reality is imminent.

The industry has seen significant development, including the recent formation of the Aviation Climate Taskforce (ACT). Ten global airline leaders together with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) have founded the non-profit organisation to accelerate breakthroughs in emerging technologies to decarbonise aviation. ACT will use innovation and next generation technologies to focus on solutions - synthetic fuel and direct air capture, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and long-term solutions, such as hydrogen technologies.

Cathay Pacific has pioneered efforts in decarbonisation technologies over the years. It became the first airline investor of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Fulcrum BioEnergy in 2014, and recently committed to using SAF for 10 per cent of its total fuel consumption by 2030. The airline has already committed to purchasing 1.1 million tonnes of SAF over 10 years, which will cover around 2 per cent of its pre-Covid-19 fuel requirements on an annual

basis. The airline’s ongoing decarbonisation efforts and commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, is a clear signal of the determination to be a leader in the fight against climate change.

ADOPTING SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS

The industry aims to adopt an environmentally responsible mind-set and sustainable practice across functions. Operational improvements and efficiencies can make a difference at every step of the journey.

Additionally, airlines are also facing considerable issues with the management and disposal of cabin waste. According to IATA, the airline industry produced up to 5.7 million tonnes of cabin waste in 2017 costing the aviation sector US$927 million. The waste volumes could double in the next ten years in the absence of concrete regulations.

DIGITALLY SUSTAINABLE

Airlines are investing and developing technologies that could help them reduce emissions and meet their sustainability goals. Switching from traditional fossil-derived jet fuels to renewable sources, investing in new materials that make planes lighter, more aerodynamic, and adopting digitally enabled systems help efficiently streamline operations, reducing cost and environmental impact. The abundance of space in the hotel was something I genuinely enjoyed

Dum Pukht at ITC Maurya, A Luxury Collection Hotel New Delhi

Dum Pukht has established its presence in the Indian fine dining scene for a little over two decades now. The menu encompasses the essence of the North with ample touches from the Lucknowi style of cooking to exude Nawabi opulence. My culinary adventure included jhinga dum nisha - a plate of delicious tandoori jumbo prawns marinated in cheese and hung yoghurt, the famous kakori kebab which is a heady

blend of mince mutton meat and delicately flavoured with touches of cloves and cinnamon, the habibia chops and the tantalising murgh chandi tikka. When it is time for a curry, I was truly spoilt for choice. I feasted on the murgh khushk purdah which is truly remarkable. The curry is made

of lamb shanks dum cooked that brings out the authentic flavours of the meat and spices. The dal dum pukht with naan on the side is a great option for vegetarians. I ended this fulfilling meal on a sweet note with the gulab ki kheer and the decadent shahi tukda.

Martabaan by Hemant Oberoi, Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi HOURS

An embodiment of ‘contemporary classic’ Indian dining, Martabaan is a must-visit if you are like me always looking for a flavourful meal that will linger on your tastebuds in the most delightful manner possible. The restaurant is a feather on the

creativity. I indulged in lavish fare by beginning with a plate of the creamy murgh malai tikka. This was followed by a heavy main course of Martabaan ka meat which is crafted beautifully with tender meat and fresh spices. If you are a vegetarian you can relish the Martabaan ke chole accompanied with an assortment of Indian breads. The end to my extravagant a air was a plate of refreshing orange basundi that aptly balanced all the spices from the main course.

THE TRAVELLER'S CHECKLIST

Business Traveller looks at what readers need to consider before travelling abroad, from entry requirements and testing to quarantine, masks and vaccine passports

WORDS HANNAH BRANDLER

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

Before departing for your destination (or even choosing a location), you should check the requirements for entry into the country and for re-entry home. ese can change regularly, but you can nd all the relevant information on the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development O ce (FCDO) website or overseas government websites.

DO I NEED TO TAKE A TEST?

Some countries still require proof of a negative Covid-19 test for entry depending on your vaccination status. Check whether you need to take a PCR test, which can take 24 to 48 hours to receive results, or the more rapid antigen (lateral ow) test which can be completed at home and gives a result within 30 minutes. You will also need to make sure that you take the test in the right timeframe, which ranges from 24 to 72 hours depending on the destination. To make matters more complicated, this timeframe can apply to ‘pre-departure’ or ‘pre-arrival/landing’.

You must also check if you need to take a test to return home a er your trip. If this is the case, plan ahead, nd and book an appointment with Covid-19 testing providers at your destination. If you are only required to take a lateral ow test, then you can buy a rapid antigen test and carry it in your hand luggage.

WILL I NEED TO QUARANTINE?

e requirement for quarantine tends to be dependent on the numbers of Covid-19 cases in the country of departure. Some countries will demand that you self-isolate, while others exempt those who are fully vaccinated, have recently recovered from the virus, or show proof of a negative PCR test.

DO I NEED TO DOWNLOAD A VACCINE PASSPORT?

In short, yes. Fully vaccinated travellers, or those who have had a positive PCR test within the past six months, should download a digital PDF of their vaccine certi cate and print o a copy in case (God forbid) your phone runs out of battery during your travels. You will be required to show proof of vaccination at border control (via the QR code) or a paper version, and you may also be asked to upload this into your booking with an airline or rail provider before arriving at the terminus.

IS MY MASK PERMITTED?

While we’re all accustomed to wearing masks, some countries and transport services have strict rules on the type of face covering allowed. Check whether the likes of cloth masks, face shields or masks with an exhaust valve are allowed in your destination, onboard your chosen airline or rail provider.

Many of these services instead require a surgical mask, or a FFP2 ( ltering face piece), KN95 or N95 mask, as they provide extra protection.

CAN I CHANGE OR CANCEL MY BOOKING?

Check whether you can amend or cancel your booking free of charge if you need to postpone travel plans. Most companies have extended their exible booking policies because of the ongoing travel uncertainty, waiving the change fee and o ering refunds or travel vouchers in the event of cancellation.

WHAT ARE THE LOCAL RULES?

Regulations di er around the world – from caps on group numbers to curfews and proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter establishments – so check ahead of departure to ensure your trip is as smooth as possible. BTI
