Introduction It’s a sunny Monday morning in Dallas, and I’ve just been told this book is going to press and it’s time to write the introduction. What a coincidence that I am emerging from post-wedding emotions after serving as a bridesmaid in my cousin’s weekend wedding in South Texas. Like all weddings, hers was full of traditions and sweet moments. Somehow, weddings affect everyone involved. They remind us of commitment, they bring us together with family members we haven’t seen in ages, but mostly they consume us with feelings of love. As I stood in my long black dress, holding my perfectly arranged bunch of ecru roses, I listened to the preacher speak about how love is patient, love is not boastful—you know the sermon. While a calm ambience settled, I took in all the surroundings: the light, breezy air and the river as it slowly flowed beneath the setting sun. As I looked out at the guests, I spotted my tearful mom and sister and my smiling aunt in the front row. Then I glanced toward my cousin Kara as she held her groom’s hands, and although her face was red and streaming with tears, she had never looked more radiant. I felt surrounded with love during this gathering of dear friends and family; my heart was full of joy for my cousin’s new beginning. And I couldn’t help but reminisce of the sweet moment when I stood at the altar with all my bridesmaids, no tears, just pure joy. My own Cayman Island wedding provided the inspiration to publish a book about real weddings. Because my experience was so memorable and involved so much love, I thought everyone must feel the same way. So I set out to find the best photographers in Texas and asked them to submit photography from their favorite weddings. The imagery in this collection has captured the mood, style, flowers, candid moments

of emotion and colors that set specific themes. Each wedding is as beautiful as the next; each is unique in a special way. Thank you to all the photographers who worked so patiently with me on this project. Because of your talent, the featured weddings are stunning and brilliantly presented. And to the brides chosen by their respective photographers: Thank you for sharing your personal love stories with such heartfelt emotion. They reflect the genuineness I had envisioned for this book. en and I met at a martial arts school where we studied tae kwon do. I had been there for about a year when Ben joined. We trained next

to each other for months before we became friends. Some of our friends told me I should ask him out, but I couldn’t imagine that he would be interested in me. I was chicken. Then we learned that the tae kwon do school would be closing and we would have to find new places to train. Ben and I ended up at different gyms. A week or two after the school closed, I got an email from Ben asking if I would take care of his dog while he was out of town. I began to suspect he might like me. The weekend before Ben went out of town, he came to a party at my house. When it was over and everyone else had gone home, we kissed. He even admitted that he had asked me to take care of his dog so he would have an excuse to take me to dinner. Our first date was dinner at a Turkish restaurant. I had the chicken; he had the lamb. Afterward, we went out for a beer at one of my favorite bars. That night I was so afraid that we wouldn’t have anything to talk about, and I was so relieved when we could joke and talk without being too nervous. I remember looking across the table at him and telling myself, “If Ben is always as wonderful as he is right now, I can see us getting married.” Ben has always been as wonderful as he was on that first date— maybe even better. We have been pretty inseparable ever since, but this development was a surprise only to ourselves. Our friends had been expecting it for months. No one was surprised when we announced that we were getting married, either.

ur engagement was traditional and very special. I knew something was up when I told my close friend that Gary was taking me on a date, and she

immediately began to cry. She already knew the plan. Gary picked me up in a chauffeured Town Car and took me to a classy restaurant. He arranged to have a centerpiece of my favorite flowers on the table, as well as a post-proposal champagne toast and my favorite dessert. At one point in the evening, I looked away for a moment, and when I turned back around he was by my side on one knee. He professed his desire to have me as his wife, and I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to say yes! It was touching that he worked so hard to make everything perfect, down to the ring he had made especially for me. More importantly, that night we promised to make the most significant commitment of our lives. Our wedding followed four months later, and it could be nothing but spectacular to us because we were there together as husband and wife for the very first time. People still tell me that every time my husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name is mentioned, I get a silly grin on my face and a twinkle in my eye. We are best friends and companions in every aspect of our lives.

tephen and I met in December of 2005 at a retreat for a Christian sports camp at which I worked summers and he was on full-time staff. We ran into each other several

times throughout the next few months, but only talked in passing. I returned to camp the following May and we hit it off right away. One day we were playing with some little girls and I volunteered him to let them paint his face. Afterward, Stephen approached me and said, “You volunteered my time, now I am volunteering yours this weekend.” He would not tell me where we were going or what we were doing. That Saturday morning, he greeted me with a handful of sand and told me that was my clue. We wound up driving two hours to the Corpus Christi beach and had our first date. We dated the rest of the summer, saw each other regularly throughout my last semester of school that fall and became very close. On my graduation day, Stephen handed me my present: a partially eaten bag of M&M’s—my favorite candy. It was squishy, and I poured it out to find that it was filled with sand. My gift was a return trip to the same beach where we had had out first date. We flew to Corpus Christi that night, and the next morning, he woke me to watch the sunrise on the beach. After the sun rose, Stephen handed me a mahogany heart-shaped puzzle box and a poem, which he asked me to read aloud. I was nearly through when I skimmed to the last line: “Will you join me and be my wife?” Of course I accepted his proposal.

he year was 2000. I had just graduated from UT Austin with my BS in Computer Science and landed my first job as a software engineer at i2

Technologies. Fernando also graduated from UT’s Computer Science program around the same time I did—though somehow we had never met on campus—and began working at i2 as well. We met on a Friday afternoon at our company’s happy hour. We started talking and found that we had a lot in common. I still vividly remember the following Monday. He sat down on my desk, looked at me and asked, “Do you have a boyfriend?” Overcoming my shock, I managed to say no, and he asked me out for a date that Friday. We went out every following day until Tuesday, when he left for a month to visit his family in Spain. While in Spain, he called me every day around 4:00 p.m. I later found out that to make those calls, he had to go to the plaza on top of the hill where the town’s only pay phone was located. Thus our relationship began, and because we spent so much time together at work, it developed quickly. A few years later, we both quit our jobs and backpacked through Europe for three months. We learned a great deal about one another and had the best time of our lives. I also met his extended family in Spain and loved them. At midnight on November 2, 2004, he proposed. People say a relationship is hard work, but when you find a person who shares similar values, goals, passions, beliefs and dreams, it is easy to enjoy the journey.

om and I had been dating about a year and a half. He knew that I really wanted to get married, but never showed his cards as far as this subject was concerned.

One Sunday night, Tom suggested that we have a nice dinner, open a nice bottle of wine and just relax at home. He cooked steaks on the grill, and I opened the wine. After dinner, we did the dishes and then went into the living room to watch a movie. Before the movie started, Tom said he wanted to talk about our relationship. He asked me if I was happy with the way things were going. I told him I was. Then he said “You really want to get married, don’t you?” Of course, I said, “Yes, do you?” He said, “Yes.” Then I said, “To me?” He said, “But of course! Let’s do it.” I looked at him dumbfounded, not sure what he was saying, so he tried again, “Let’s get married!” I must have looked at him as if he was from a distant planet, because he tried a third time, saying, “Will you marry me?” and pulled out the ring. It was the most surprised I have ever been, and the most romantic day of my life.

ohn and I first encountered each other online. I’m a singer/songwriter who, at the time, was looking for somebody to work with. John, who’s a producer and

a DJ, was searching for new talent to develop for his production company. He posted an ad online, and I was the one he chose to work with. Our professional relationship quickly became a friendship, which developed into more as we spent time together in the studio. Just before Christmas a couple of years later, we exchanged our wish lists, and I asked for an engagement ring, amongst other things—as though the ring weren’t enough! However, on Christmas day, I got everything on my list except the proposal. I felt like a kid who gets socks for Christmas: disappointed. As we got dressed for dinner at his parents’ house, I got the nerve to tell him that I thought that he would have asked me to marry him on Christmas Day. He responded by storming out of the room, and all I could think was, “Oh my God! I just ruined Christmas! How could I be so selfish?” A minute later, he came back into the room and presented me with an engagement ring. I just about had a heart attack. I began to cry uncontrollably, and he said, “I wanted to propose at dinner but since you brought it up I couldn’t wait!” We married a year and a half later and are still happily together.

t is a wonderful feeling to know that you hold in your arms the person meant for you. Chris and I have used three little letters to sign love notes to each other for

years: AML. It stands for “All My Love,” and that is what we promise to give each other for the rest of our lives. It is inscribed in our rings, a comforting reminder that no matter where we are in the world, our respective soul mates are thinking about us. We knew we were meant to be husband and wife—the only question was when. It is extremely liberating to give up caring about the conventional rules people want to assign to a wedding: how long the courtship should be; when it should be; how many people to invite. I am thankful that the weeks leading up to our wedding day were not filled with mundane thoughts about our ceremony but instead were spent thinking about the things that define our marriage to each of us. Most importantly, we each knew with absolute certainty that the other was the person we want to wake up next to every morning and fall asleep with every night, from now until eternity. We both can honestly say of each other, “This is the person with whom I want to share my deepest fears, my wildest dreams and my greatest moments. This is the person I want as my partner forever.” We have no fear or doubt, just love.

oth of us are athletic and love sports, so it was fitting that Rodney and I met while playing a game of co-ed flag football at the park in July

of 2003. I remember seeing him across the field and telling my friend that I hoped he was on our team. Later, after we met, he told me that he was thinking the same thing after he saw me throw the football during warm-up—a perfect spiral; thanks for the lessons, Dad! Thank goodness we had more in common than football. We had our first date two days later and were more or less inseparable after that. We both tried to play it cool and not get into anything serious too soon. Imagine how surprised I was when he proposed four months later on what felt like the top of world—the roof of Reliant Stadium. I think I surprised him even more by saying “absolutely!” before he could even finish the proposal. I figured, when you know that you have found the one, there is no need to waste time. Eight months later, we said our vows in front of 250 family members and close friends at All Saints Catholic Church in The Heights historical district. The most romantic and significant moment of my life was when Rodney took my hand and linked my fingers in his as we walked up the steps to the altar. That moment completely sums up how we felt the moment we met—that we had happened upon something so special that neither of us ever wanted to let go.

ur story begins only because two friends thought we might enjoy each other’s company for one blind date.

Our date was at Gleneagles Country Club where we were attending an evening party for the Tassie Member/Guest Golf Tournament. One date turned into two, and then three, within four days. We were both scheduled to travel for work the next two weeks, which gave us the opportunity to talk on the phone at night for hours. This is when we fell in love …. We were engaged in Napa four months later. Our wedding at Perkins Chapel in Dallas was lovely. I wore a fabulous ivory Richard Glasgow wedding gown—strapless, beaded bodice, A-line skirt. Our parents, Patsy and Harry, the most important people in our lives, were naturally our Matron of Honor and Best Man. Our reception at Gleneagles County Club, featuring Emerald City, was absolutely amazing. We fell in love all over again on our honeymoon in Italy, where we traveled to Florence, Venice and Lake Como. Even though the two of us were hesitant about finding love, fate stepped in to change our lives forever. There is not a day that goes by that we are not thankful for having found each other.

hile it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment we met, we do know we shared our first kiss in the summer of 1998, the day before Justin was to

leave for Europe for three months. In those days, the internet was not used as it is today, so we shared but a postcard that first three months. Yet the compatibility and potential future we envisioned with one another were spot-on. When Justin returned to Austin, we hit the ground running. In

actuality, I tore my knee apart on the dance floor during what could be called our first date and was rushed to the hospital. Though our courtship was temporarily immobilized, we spent the next eight years together attacking life to the fullest. After we both graduated from The University of Texas and left Austin, we called Spain, Santa Monica, Denmark and Washington, D.C., all “home.” But eventually, with seven years, five cities, four graduation ceremonies, a laundry list of countries visited and countless concerts and college football games behind us, we set our sights on Texas— none of those other places knew how to make a good margarita, anyway—where we could celebrate our loving families, our wild friends and our love for one another. We settled in Austin, where we had walked hand-in-hand through campus at 19 and down the aisle at 27.

met Andrew by chance five years ago when I was still in college, working at a small café near campus. Andrew was immediately charmed by what he

perceived as my powerful wit and fun-loving personality. Although Andrew recalls it was the worst drink he had ever had, he sought to win my heart. On his daily lunch breaks, he would visit the café to get to know me better, and a friendship slowly grew between us. After several months had passed, he worked up the courage to ask me out. He devised an elaborate Valentine’s Day plan, wherein his brother posed as Andrew and chatted with me on instant messenger to create a diversion. Meanwhile, the real Andrew was just a few yards away outside of my apartment, dressed up in a homemade suit of armor and holding a dozen roses. He knocked on my apartment door, and I opened it. I was completely blown away. Though his sincerity and outlandish quirkiness won me over, the romantic gesture did not hurt either. After all, when your proverbial knight in shining armor is standing outside your door asking you to be his, how can you say no? Our relationship became official that night, and we exchanged vows in an evening ceremony among close friends and family on September 23, 2006, at the Austin Museum of Art–Laguna Gloria.

evin and I met in an elevator, just like in the movies. We were both headed home after work one Friday night—we are both attorneys

and work in the same building—and I had some case law documents sticking out of my handbag. Kevin looked over at me and commented about my “fun Friday night reading.” We introduced ourselves and quickly became friends. It was not until close to eight months after we forged a friendship that we began to see each other seriously. We were inseparable from the night of our very first date, on. We were engaged in April of 2004, and we were married on May 14, 2005. We made it a point to make the focus of our wedding our loved ones rather than ourselves. We decided to make our friends, family and wedding party know just how much we admired them and loved them by toasting them at the reception—we refused to have anyone toast us. Our wedding night was the most extraordinary night of our lives. Everyone danced, laughed and had a great time. Little did we know that our fabulous wedding night would turn into an even more fabulous marriage. We are so excited to have expanded our family. We had a baby girl in August of 2007, and we plan to adopt a baby boy from Guatemala. What a journey this has been—and will be.

ou know the feeling you get on an airplane as you watch the passengers board and hope that the empty seat next to you stays empty? As you watch people

approach, you think to yourself, “Don’t sit here, don’t sit next to me.” This is the feeling Joe had as he sat on an airplane from Baltimore to Houston on Labor Day, 2004—the day he met his future wife. But when he saw me coming down the aisle to take my assigned seat next to his, his mental mantra quickly became, “You can sit here.” At the time, Joe was living in Houston and I in Austin. We struck up a conversation as the plane took off and continued talking for the remainder of the two-and-a-half hour flight. When we landed in Houston, Joe offered to walk me to my gate, and I asked if he would like to get a drink with me during my layover. Before I boarded my plane, we exchanged numbers. Four days later, Joe called me. We had our first date in Austin a few weeks later. One thing led to another, and after many long-distance phone calls and drives back and forth from Austin to Houston, Joe proposed.

iven and I met in high school at the respective ages of 15 and 16. The moment we knew we’d fallen in love was when we slow danced on

my parents’ back patio. From that point forward, we knew that we were meant to be together. We dated for nearly 11 years before Niven proposed to me, the night before we were leaving to go out of town. I’d asked him to get my suitcase out of the attic, and as he was coming back down, he pretended to hurt his ankle. When I went to the stairs to see if he was okay, he was down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I quickly said yes, with my eyes full of tears. Even though it was around 11:00 p.m., I had to call and wake my mother up to tell her—and I actually went to her house right after to show her the ring! Niven and I were married on July 1, 2006, at the Kessler Park United Methodist Church. The reception followed immediately after at the Renaissance Hotel in Dallas. We ate, drank and danced the night away, and we still receive emails and hear comments about it being one of the best nights people have ever had. We are honored to have been a part of such an enjoyable and memorable evening and grateful to each of them for making it so.

eke and I had a beautiful and relaxed wedding at a bed-and-breakfast called Country Woods Inn & Chapel in Glen Rose, Texas. It was exactly the way

I’d pictured it. We had a white horse-drawn buggy that took me from the main house to the chapel across the field. The chapel had French doors on both ends, which we kept open, and windows all around it that opened as well. Inside the wooden chapel were wooden benches that we had decorated with raffia and a single rose at the end of each. The ceremony was at sunset, and the ambience was just perfect with the sounds of birds singing and the Puluxy River running and the light of the sun setting behind the trees. After the ceremony, Zeke and I rode the buggy back to the main house for the reception. I had made luminaries, which we’d hung from the trees above the dining tables. For dinner, we served barbecue provided by a wonderful local family restaurant. It was amazing! By the time the sun was gone, everything was lit up beautifully by the dangling luminaries and the twinkling stars. It was a perfect Texas night!

met Merritt in early fall of 2001 at a mutual friend’s concert. After talking all night and exchanging phone numbers, we knew immediately that we were

Throughout the night, Merritt would look at me and fondly call me “Mrs. Drury.” Within the year, we were married at the beautiful Avanti Restaurant in downtown Dallas. uke and I met one night at Sherlock’s Baker Street. He grinned down at me with his gorgeous smile and great eyes, and we started talking. The

conversation was so engaging that we decided to leave and grab a bite to eat at Katz’s Deli with one of my girlfriends. Things were going well—but once we started talking about books and life, that was it! We met on a Friday; I was busy Saturday, and he didn’t want to wait until the next weekend to take me out, so he asked me out for Monday. He took me to Pappa’s Bros. Steakhouse, and we closed the place down—we just kept talking. From then on, we were inseparable. Five months later, in front of more than 120 people at his family reunion, he got down on one knee and proposed. We decided to get married in Galveston at the Hotel Galvez and make it a destination wedding of sorts. His family had to come down from Michigan, and mine had to drive over from Houston, so Memorial Day weekend was perfect. The main focus aside from the dress—and the marriage, of course—was the flowers. I wanted a black-and-white wedding to let the flowers provide the color, so I chose calla lilies, roses and hydrangeas. It was gorgeous. We left the next morning for Barbados, and the honeymoon is still going strong.

an and I met as design students at the University of Texas. We never went out of our way to hang out with each other, but still ended up spending a lot of

time together. It all seemed to unfold in a natural way—we had this great friendship that just was, no matter how exciting or mundane the circumstances. We’d carpool together to school and have class together. Sometimes we’d go climbing on weekends. We took on design projects as partners, and eventually started a graphic design business with two other friends. On top of that, we were in a not-very-good-but-fun band together—Ian on bass, and I on the drums. After nearly four years of friendship, I began to notice something new between us. I felt like Ian was looking at me differently, and I’d find myself blushing at times when I normally wouldn’t. Our friendship was the same, but with a new and unexpected shyness. One evening after band practice, after all the guys left, Ian came back. I knew why, and could feel it in the way I nervously greeted him at the door. We sat across from each other at the kitchen table. I poured us two shots of tequila, and he told me how he felt about me. That moment was so intense and sincere that I hardly knew what to say, but my mind was made up—I wanted to be with him.

ndy and I have known each other since 1985, when I was three and he was five. We grew up down the street from each other—his house

was 100 yards away from mine. His mom, Libba, was my preschool teacher, and we attended the same school growing up. Although we never dated in high school, we did date each other’s friends. As time went on, we both graduated from high school and went off to different colleges in different towns. When Andy graduated from college, he returned home to job hunt. On one of my visits home, I joined my mom to run some errands. We stopped by the Thigpens’ to drop off a newspaper article for Libba. When we pulled up, Andy was mowing, and all I saw was red hair and a big smile. I instantly knew there was something there. Andy did not catch on so fast, although he did give me his number that day, telling me to call if I ever wanted to go do something. As we drove away, I told my mom that I would marry him. She thought I was crazy, but I called him that Friday anyway to ask if he wanted to go to the movies. I was not going to let him get away. On December 10, 2005, after almost three years of dating, Andy asked me to marry him after a great dinner at the Dragonfly at Hotel ZaZa in Dallas. We were married November 25, 2006, at The Victorian House in Kaufman; I guess we were always meant to be.

lthough a mutual friend had been trying to set us up for three years, Bill and I met on a blind date. We had arranged the date on a

phone call that had begun as an effort by Bill to contact our friend at work. I worked in the same office and happened to answer the phone. So really, we met by accident. Bill told me that he found my voice so charming that it made him want to learn more about me. He found an email our friend had sent him in an attempt to get us together, which included my phone number. Bill called me that evening and, as he tells it, I won him over with my sense of humor and fun spirit. We went out on a few dates, but we really fell for each other on what Bill likes to call “the mother of all dates.” We had gone out to play pool after work one evening and came across a skateboard park. I dared Bill to ride the half pipe, which he did “to show off his youthful athleticism.” The experiment went totally wrong, and Bill fell and broke his arm. Through my concern for his safety, I realized that I had fallen as well. We were married almost a year later.

rowing up in separate towns in Oklahoma and Texas, both Devon and I were urged to attend Oklahoma State University. After we were accepted

and moved to campus, we both joined the Greek system. We met through a mutual acquaintance at Devonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fraternity. While college molded us into responsible young adults, God was planning something magical on that serene Oklahoma State campus. We started dating in November of 2001, Devonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third and my second year of college. After a nearly five-year-long courtship, and shortly after my graduation, Devon proposed. I moved to Dallas, while Devon finished up his MBA at Oklahoma State. When Devon graduated in June of 2006, he quickly followed me to Dallas where wedding plans had been brewing since the previous year. We tied the knot on September 16, 2006, in a beautiful celebration of love, with many friends and family in attendance. We honeymooned in the Bahamas, but soon had to return from paradise to begin what will surely be a lifetime of happiness.

atthew and I first met in high school where I was a cheerleader for Matthew’s football team. During Matthew’s senior

year, he asked me to attend the high school prom with him. Neither he nor I were dating anyone at the time, and the two of us had many friends in common. We went together as friends, had a fun night, and then went our separate ways. We attended different colleges and did not really keep in touch. However, we did maintain friendships with mutual high school classmates, and the summer after Matthew graduated from college, we met up again at a friend’s house. We talked and laughed, and started to bridge the four-year gap in our relationship. We went on our second date that summer and soon fell in love. Matthew proposed 18 months later, and we married two-and-a-half years after our second date, almost seven years after our first date. We exchanged vows at the school where we first met—where our friendship began and later grew into a marriage.

achary and I had known each other long before we fell in love, which made getting to know each other so much easier. We were friends in

high school, though Zack was two years ahead of me. We didn’t really get to know one another until I was in college, and we had no idea we’d fall in love. We started dating in December of 2002. The day of our first date, I showed up at Zack’s office and asked, “When are you going to take me out on a date?” We left immediately for dinner and a movie. It was clear to both of us that we had fallen for one another. Zack asked me to marry him on July 10, 2003, on a moonlit night on the beach in Acapulco. It felt like a fairy tale—we laughed, cried and expressed our excitement for our future together. We were married on December 13, 2003, at Highland Park United Methodist Church on the campus of Southern Methodist University. After much planning and anticipation, it all came together. Everything seemed in its place, and we shared our joy with family and friends as we began our life together.

ustin and I decided to have a Big D wedding, since I’m a Dallas native. We wanted the day to be filled with the love and support of the people who are important

to us. And it was. Family was an important theme when we were planning our wedding. As my family is Vietnamese, we wanted to make sure that we incorporated a few touches from my culture, but also pay respect to Justin’s family as well. From the touches of vibrant reds and golds to the paper lanterns we hung from the ceiling at Aija Restaurant in the Trammel Crow Center located in the Arts District of Downtown Dallas—the celebration represented a fusion of both our cultures. Everyone helped make the day such a success. It was a day to remember, and I’ll always cherish it. There’s not one thing I would’ve done differently. Though the day went by very fast, the most important moment remains vivid in my memory: I finally said “I do” to the love of my life, in front of God, our families and friends.

ill and I both grew up showing American Quarter Horses, but we lived on opposite sides of the country—Will in Virginia, and I in

California. In 1997, Will moved to Texas to pursue his dream of becoming a professional horse trainer by working for top quarterhorse trainers. In 2001, I also moved to Texas to spend more time with my horses and focus on competing as an amateur horseman. While we eventually became acquaintances through the small world of horse showing, it took some coaxing from a close friend to bring us together. On New Year’s Eve 2003, that same friend—a horse trainer as well—fixed us up at a party in Fort Worth. At that time, Will was working for a private ranch in East Texas, four hours away. We got to know each other better and grew closer at horse shows and through long commutes. In December of 2003, Will moved back to North Texas where I was finishing college. In April of 2004, on my birthday, Will proposed at the Reunion Tower Restaurant in Dallas. We were married on September 25, 2004. We both love Texas so much we decided to have the wedding here, with friends and family flying in from both coasts. Today, we reside in Whitesboro, Texas, where Will operates a horse-training facility for high levels of competition and I raise and compete with my own horses.

was an actress moving to Dallas to join an actors’ studio. Ken was a small business owner and divorced father of two. We met at a Latin Independent Film

festival. The premier film was showing at The Dallas Museum of Art, and Ken had donated a crystal piece for the door prize. At the last moment, the lighted base for the crystal went out. Reluctantly, he drove down to the museum to drop off the replacement. One of his employees urged him to come in and shake hands with the producer of the event. Despite his protests, Ken decided to go in and make an appearance. A few minutes later, I showed up to the event. Ken told me later that the second he saw me, he said to himself, “She’s the one.” It didn’t take long to convince me that he was right. On our first date we met for breakfast, which turned into lunch and then progressed into dinner. From that point on, we did not want to leave each other’s side. A year later, we were married in the penthouse at The Stoneleigh Hotel. I walked down the aisle to the sounds of a Spanish guitar where my future husband and step children were waiting. Everything about that day was perfect—the food, the flowers, the intimate setting. It was the most romantic day of my life and a wonderful way to begin our new family.

ick and I met through his sister, Missy, who worked for me. We did not interact much, but over the years, as I heard more and more about

him from his sister, I learned that he was a kind and hard-working guy. Something about him attracted me, and I just knew that he was a good person. As I trained for long-distance triathlons, I would plan to ride my bike through Grapevine, where I could usually find Rick outside working in his garden. One afternoon while at the office, I turned to Missy and said, “I know who would be perfect for me—your brother.” She replied, “Ricky?! No way! You two would get on one another’s nerves.” But there was something about him, and I just knew he was it. I rode my bike by his house several more times and even dropped a postcard in the mail to him while my daughter and I traveled through Europe, and finally he asked me out. Five months after our first date we were engaged, and on July 23, 2005—the anniversary of our first date—we were married. We continue to be very happy.

was born in France and, my father being in the military, traveled my entire childhood until my family eventually settled in Houston. Sunny was born and

raised in Houston, and though we grew up in the same community and went to the same high school, it wasn’t until college that we became friends. When we first met, it was apparent to both of us that we had the same sense of humor and ability to laugh a lot. That common quality kept us strong as we played musical cities around Texas—I went to The University of Texas and Sunny to The University of Houston, and after school we both worked in different cities. To this day, our relationship remains long distance. While we’ve lived apart for the majority of our relationship, we have made it a point to try to see each other as much as possible. We often travel together and are grateful we have been fortunate enough to do so. Although neither of us ever lived in India, we celebrated our heritage with our traditional Punjabi wedding, complete with custom-made adorned traditional clothing and a few twists, to incorporate our upbringing. Our marriage has been wonderful—but we do look forward to finally living in the same city.

y husband Andrew and I were high school sweethearts and dated for over five years before we got married. We weathered

two years of a long-distance relationship, a near-death experience— his, not mine—and a lot of other blood-sweat-and-tears moments before he proposed in 2005. We began planning a big, splashy country club wedding for April, 2006. I was stressed for most of that planning period. The pressure of being the perfect bride made me uncomfortable, and I thought it best to give myself more time. Our plans were postponed indefinitely. But in late August, Andrew found out that his company was transferring him to North Carolina, and he had nine days to move. I had just quit my job in Texas, and he wanted me to move with him; but I was reluctant to go. I didn’t want to end up in Raleigh with no job and no husband and then find that the strain was hurting our relationship. When I shared my concerns with Andrew, he suggested we get married—as soon as possible. I invited about 70 of our closest friends and family members to a going-away party for Andrew at one of our favorite restaurants near the historic town square in Denton. But when they arrived, I wasn’t there. Andrew waited until they’d all had a glass of wine and then announced that I was waiting for him at the courthouse, asking them to join us as we said our vows. So we got married at the courthouse; it was on a beautiful night, under a canopy of white lights. It was the most perfect expression of our relationship—we had done it ourselves, and though it was unconventional, it was completely “us.”

n my summer break from college in 2002, I was at home in Dallas, and a friend of mine came to visit. We went out to a bar to meet up with a friend of

hers from college who was working in Dallas. Little did I know I was going to meet the guy I would marry. But it wasn’t love at first sight. Bob was working in Dallas, and after school, I moved to Houston. We kept in touch and spoke on the phone many times on our ways home from work, being out with friends and especially bad dates. Over the years, our friendship grew into something more. Neither one of us realized it right away, but we were the ones for each other. We used virtually every excuse to go visit each other, albeit just as “friends,” something a lot of people saw right through—except us. It wasn’t until the spring of 2005 that we were finally on the same page. From then on, every weekend was booked. I headed to Dallas, or Bob came to Houston. In October of 2005, Bob surprised me with a trip to California, where he proposed to me on Pfeiffer Beach. On May 6, 2006, we married at Perkins Chapel on the SMU campus, and held our reception at the Dallas Museum of Art. It may have taken three years to figure out that we were the ones for each other, but what grew out of that friendship was well worth the wait!

ur love story begins with a two-year friendship. Don’t get me wrong—it was definitely love at first sight; but things worth having are worth waiting

for. We like to think of it as a two-year courtship. We both knew there was something special about our friendship, so we took our time simply enjoying each other’s company without the complexity of a romantic relationship. It was a true, deep friendship that cultivated our undying love for each other. Jason is definitely a softy, but unfortunately he’s not your storybook romantic. With the best intentions and love in his heart, he took me to play a game of Putt-Putt on my 27th birthday. There, his proposal plan would unfold. Despite the 50-mile-per-hour, hurricane-like winds and the go-karts zooming by us, Jason proceeded as planned. He dropped my engagement ring into the bottom of the cup and insisted that I didn’t cheat on the hole—who, me?—but actually putt the ball for a change. Fifteen putts later, I actually sunk the ball. When I reached down to get my ball, I noticed something that definitely did not belong in the cup. As I removed what I thought was a small box with earrings inside, I noticed Jason on one knee with tears welling in his eyes. My heart dropped, and time stood still. The next four words I would hear, crackling voice and all, would make me the happiest girl on earth. It’s been a fairy tale love story ever since.

have always aspired to have a marriage like my mom and dad’s, but I never thought it would be possible until I met Chad while lifeguarding one summer. My

Aunt Kim told me she knew of a guy that was looking for a summer job as a lifeguard and asked if I could help him out. He wound up getting hired, and I wound up having the biggest crush of my life. I told all my friends that I had found the guy I was going to marry, even though he wouldn’t give me the time of day. I ran into him a couple of years later, he finally came to his senses, and we started dating. A few months after that, he moved to Lubbock to go to Texas Tech, and we did the long-distance thing. It was hard, but it definitely made us realize that we were meant to be together. We both got tired of being six hours away from each other, so I moved to Lubbock to be with him and go to school. He graduated and moved back to Dallas to intern at Baylor Hospital. I knew I would hate Lubbock without him, and I missed my mom and dad, so I moved back, too. After five years of dating, Chad proposed. We have now been together more than six years, and I know I married the man I was meant to spend the rest of my life with. I feel like a princess in his presence, and I know he would do anything for me. I know when he hugs me, I’m in the arms of my soul mate. He’s my best friend, and I must say, I’ve got to be the luckiest girl alive.

ur first handshake was love at first touch— or at least I knew I liked him very, very much. We flirted at work,

and bicycled after; Nick blew me away with his talents and such. May 30th of ‘04 was surely not a bore. I kissed the groom, he kissed the bride, then carried me right through the door. Costa Rica started our June with a fun and dreamy honeymoon. Beaches, volcanoes, monkeys and rainforests— the end of our trip came too soon. A month later, a blessing showed up. Nick brought a gift to the duplex—a pup. Skin and bones, Great heart and soul, Simba, king of Chihuahuas, sealed the nup. Married—it’s been more than a year, it’s true. Before that, we taped memories without the glue. I cherish our friendship, past, present and future. And the love we have will see us through.

homas and I met in an anthropology class our junior year of college. We would talk casually, and he would ask to borrow my notes every once in awhile.

It was September 11, 2001, when we finally had a chance to spend some time together out of the classroom setting. We had both shown up for class, which was canceled because of the attack on the United States. We spent that day together and many more after, and by the spring semester we were exclusively dating. Thomas has always been great at surprises, but his best by far took place on September 17, 2004. It was my first year teaching second grade at a private school in Austin. I was grading papers frantically, trying to get home for the weekend, when Thomas walked into the classroom. He told me to get my stuff quickly—we had a flight to catch. When we got to the gate, I learned that we were going to Chicago to see one of my best friends who’d recently moved there for work. Thomas told me my friend was out of town until the following evening, so that night we had our own personal tour of the city, ending with a stroll on the edge of Lake Michigan overlooking Chicago’s wonderful skyline. We were enjoying our walk, when all of a sudden Thomas was down on one knee. He had pulled out a black box and asked me if I would spend the rest of my life with him. I said yes, and our driver came around the corner with a bottle of champagne and two glasses. It was the happiest day of my life—until our wedding day in April of 2006.

first met Will at the Dallas high-rise condominium building where he lived and I worked as a salesperson. Since the sales office was located near the lobby,

we would often run into each other in passing. I thought he was incredibly handsome—and still do—and he found me very attractive. We were both dating other people at the time, but we chatted each time we saw each other, and quickly became friends. This went on for about a year, until one day he came by my office to say hi and bring me a hot chocolate from Starbucks. We happened to discuss the fact that we were both newly single. I asked a rhetorical question: “Is there any guy out there who isn't into the bar scene and wants to get married and have a family one day?” He lifted his hand and said, “Me!” I thought to myself, “There he is, right in front of me after all this time.” Not long afterward, we went on our first date. I wasn't sure if the transition from friends to dating would be smooth, but when he kissed me, I knew he was a keeper. A couple of months later, we took a vacation to Cancun, Mexico, and he proposed to me on a snorkeling trip. He actually kept the ring in his pocket of his swim trunks—good thing for Velcro! We planned our own wedding at the Aldredge House in the historic district of Dallas. We were married on October 29, 2005, in the back garden, on a perfect day. Now, we reside in Austin, Texas—and we couldn’t be happier.

was doing the dating thing and had signed up for speed dating. On the night of the event, I really didn’t feel up to going; but I went at the prodding

of well-meaning friends. The third guy who rotated to my table sat down and I said, “What’s your full name? I think I know you!” He told me his name, and I informed him that I had a huge crush on him when I was 16. He and I had both attended high school at W.T. White, and we were in the same youth group. At that time, he’d had a girlfriend, but this time around, I nabbed him—20 years later! After dating for some time, Jeff took me to Garrett Creek Ranch for the weekend. Things had been nuts for me at work, and he said I needed to be whisked away. When we arrived, he gave me a card with beautiful things written in it, so I was already verklempt. We

went to the lodge for dinner, and he told me he needed to run back to the cabin. He was gone awhile—I began to think he had met a bear in the woods. He finally returned, and we had a nice meal and some wine. Then the waitress brought out a silver covered tray, which she uncovered to reveal a large Cracker Jack bag. I opened the sealed bag and found a box inside with my surprise: a beautiful ring containing his grandmother’s wedding diamond and a note asking me to marry him. After I accepted, we headed back to the cabin, and I found scattered rose petals, vases of roses and a bottle of champagne on ice—hence his long trip back to the cabin before dinner. It was yet another incredible surprise.

had been friends with Mike’s younger brother Marty for several years before I met Mike, who was in the Navy at the time. Upon finishing his tour, Mike

went into the merchant mariner industry for a time. When his father became terminally ill, he came home to help his family settle affairs, and Marty encouraged me to get to know him and invite him to our social events, as he was new to the area. We soon became good friends and eventually started dating. Mike proposed in May of 2002, the week I was graduating from college, at Pierre’s by the Lake, a place his father used to take his mom when they first moved to Texas. I thought he was taking me out to celebrate my graduation. When we arrived, he asked me if I wanted to open my graduation gift before or after dinner, and I told him I would wait. After dinner, we stood in front of his truck as I unwrapped the gift. He had placed the ring in a cell phone box because I told him I wanted a cell phone for graduation. When I discovered the ring inside, I was so surprised that I wasn’t able to speak. The pause made Mike anxious, so he asked me, “Well…. will you?” I found my voice and through the tears said yes. We began planning our wedding for a year later at my best friend’s house in Haslet, Texas. I can honestly say that the wedding was one of the most fun and exciting days of my life. We shared our love with our friends and family, and now look forward to a long and truly blessed life together.

ne year after we started dating, Cody indicated that he had qualified for a sales trip to Kauai, Hawaii, with his company and could bring a guest.

We had discussed marriage, so I suspected that the sales trip was a cover-up for his proposal. However, I second-guessed my intuition when I began receiving emails from his company regarding the itinerary, appropriate attire and attendees of the conference. Cody also indicated that he had a jeweler working on something â&#x20AC;&#x153;specialâ&#x20AC;? that would take some time to complete. I decided that our engagement must not be close at all. The day we landed in Hawaii, Cody insisted on visiting Wailua Falls, where Fantasy Island was filmed. Once we arrived, the mass of tourists suddenly disappeared and Cody dropped to one knee and proposed. There was no sales conference. His administrative assistant had created itineraries and emails just to throw me off. Cody had planned a week-long vacation for just the two of usâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and it was wonderful.

ary and I were children together at Dallas Chinese Bible Church, and one of our earliest memories together is of me chasing him around the sanctuary stage,

digging my nails into his arm. He was eight, I was seven. A year later I moved to Hong Kong, and then to Connecticut, and we didn’t really see each other again until I moved back at age 15. We had random conversations in person and over the computer and became close the summer before I went away to college. He came to visit me at college that fall, and we started dating. Most of our relationship—from 2001 to 2005; we married in 2006—was long distance with the assistance of cell phones, email and webcam conversations. Gary and I have always been rather unconventional, different from traditional Chinese kids, and this became apparent in our wedding planning. Not only did we marry young, but much to the anxiety of our parents and their friends, we planned for a ceremony using popular music described by Gary as “symphonic rock,” with the help of our friends in a band called Jadens Move. The biggest objection was to our decision for Gary and his groomsmen to wear jeans, which they did, along with the minister. We did have a traditional tea ceremony, during which I wore a qi pao, but we also had “Guitar Hero,” a video game in which competitors play rock music with toy guitars, set up on the terrace. Despite their apprehension, our parents, aunties and uncles all agreed it was a most beautiful ceremony.

t was a Wednesday evening in a restaurant near my college campus. I was bartending, as usual, but when I glanced at the front door, the night became anything

but ordinary. My eyes fell upon a figure, handsome and confident, strolling through the doors and into the lobby. He was striking. Discretely, I allowed my gaze to follow him through the crowded place. I was intrigued as I saw him enter the manager’s office. Over the next two years, Jeremy managed, I served, and our friendship grew. The overwhelming feeling didn’t hit me until my mother and grandfather dropped in for a late lunch one day. I was taken aback as Jeremy introduced himself to them both, shaking my grandfather’s hand with poise. “I have a feeling that young man is the one for our Jennifer,” my grandfather told my mother. My mother later revealed to me what my grandfather had said, and her intuition had told her the same thing about Jeremy—and about our future together. “Parents and grandparents always know best”: That saying holds special meaning to me. Today, three blissful years later, Jeremy still takes my breath away. Our love has continued to grow, and as we await the arrival of our first child, I can’t help but feel blessed.

att moved to Longview from Chicago several years ago for a job promotion—he works in marketing, and I teach first

grade. I grew up in Longview, but Matt knew virtually no one here. Christy Comer, a friend of my family who also works with Matt, set the wheels in motion. She introduced us on March 1, 2005, and it was instant chemistry. We got engaged six months later at a bed-and-breakfast in Madison, Wisconsin. Matt had called ahead and had the concierge spell out “Marry Me” in white rose petals on the bed. When we walked into our room, Matt proposed. We decided to get married in Dallas, because he had so many friends and family members flying in from the Midwest, and we both loved the atmosphere there. I have a tendency to be a control freak, so I spent nearly all of the next year planning every minute detail. We wanted our wedding to be very simple, yet classy, and I think we accomplished that. Matt is Catholic and had gone to an all-boys Catholic high school, so we had one of his old coaches—who also happened to be a priest—perform the welcome. I’m Baptist and my father is a minister, so he performed the ceremony. It was definitely my dream wedding, and the happiest day of my life.

met Sebastian in the summer of 2000 in San Antonio. I was working on my Bachelor of Science degree, while he was working in a laboratory as a

visiting scientist from a medical school in his hometown of Berlin, Germany. Four days after we met, Sebastian had to go back to Germany for four months. We talked a lot on the phone—amassing outrageous phone bills—and I decided to come visit him for New Year’s 2001. Over the next three years, Sebastian arranged four more trips to San Antonio, several months each, to visit a few different laboratories and to complete rotations at the medical school in town. His final year of medical school, from the summer of 2002 until the spring of 2003, Sebastian had to remain in Germany for nine consecutive months—the longest we had ever gone without seeing each other. After Sebastian graduated, he began looking for a job somewhere in Texas while I attempted to get accepted at a nursing school in the same city. Somehow, he was lucky enough to get a position in Galveston without even showing up for an interview. At the same time, I was accepted at a nursing school in Houston. A friend of Sebastian’s mentioned the words “destiny” and “fate” when he heard about this fortunate coincidence. In the summer of 2003, Sebastian packed two suitcases and bade farewell to Germany. We eventually moved into a house together in Houston and, about three years later, got married in my hometown of Odessa. Whether or not destiny or fate played a role, our relationship clearly was meant to be.

hen I decided to transfer to Kansas State University, I looked forward to experiencing something new, but was not thrilled about leaving Texas. I had

also prepared myself to wait until I got back to Dallas to meet that special someone. The last thing I thought possible was that I would meet the love of my life in the middle of Kansas. I decided to live in the dorms for a while to meet people, but unfortunately I was a little older than all of the other first-year students. I was sharing my frustrations with a guy who lived in the dorms as well, when he told me there was someone my age that lived across the hall from him. Just then, the guy he was speaking of walked in the front door. He had obviously just been running. We were introduced and talked about how we both love to run and work out. He told me he would like to have a running partner and promised to come get me the next time he was going. Sure enough, a week or so later, he came to my room and asked if I would like to go work out with him. We ran to the gym, worked out, and got to know a bit about each other. Afterwards, he asked if I would like to have dinner with him. We had a wonderful time, and many other dates followed. Two years later, he followed me back home to Texas so that we could spend the rest of our lives together.

eep in the heart of Austin, Texas, on March 18, 2006, two longhorns were joined that will “bleed orange” together forever.

After five years of dating, a surprise proposal in New Mexico, and a year-long engagement, Justin and I were ready to tie the knot. We made plans to have a beautiful plantation-style outdoor wedding in Austin to celebrate the city that brought us together. We were excited to have our ceremony in a quaint outdoor gazebo, surrounded by white wooden chairs and serenaded by a string quartet. But as luck would have it, it rained on our wedding day until moments before the guests were to be seated. Just as the chairs were beginning to dry, the ceremony began and the reception proceeded without a hitch. We climbed into our limo afterward and waved goodbye to all of our guests. As soon as the windows were rolled up, drops of rain begin to fall. We realized at that moment that God had blessed us with a few dry hours to celebrate our marriage in Him—and to have our time to shine.

hawn and I met while working at Olive Garden in Dallasâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;he was waiting tables, and I was a bartender. He lured me in with a game of tic-tac-

toe. Before long, we were inseparable. We dated on and off for four years through college, until he proposed one beautiful evening. Shawn had the whole thing planned for weeks. I was a little bit upset with him because he kept misleading me about our plans for my birthday. When the day came, he told me that we were going to go to the West End to just hang out and walk around. On the way there he suggested that we go up to Reunion Tower and have dinner instead. It was beautiful up there. The sun was just setting, and the sky was all purple, orange, red and gold. There wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a cloud in the sky. It was a perfect evening to be up there looking down at the city below. Just as the sun set Shawn tapped the shoulder of the man next to us and said he would like to have his attention. At that point he dropped to one knee and asked me if I would do him the honor of being his wife. I was shocked and said yes at least five times. The whole thing was beautiful! We were married on June 23, 2006. Our wedding was amazing, just as our marriage has been since.

n many ways we stumbled upon our relationship. Neither of us was looking for romance at the end of college, but the seed of friendship was to grow

and flourish into a love we had not yet imagined. Our faith in Jesus Christ and the knowledge that “We love, because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19) has formed the foundation of our commitment to one another from the beginning. The word love is used to mean many different things, but we believe love in marriage is about self-sacrifice, laying down your life for the other: “Greater love has no one than this, that He lay down his life for His friends” (John 15:13). What we hoped to express on our wedding day and what we have seen in our first years of marriage is that in joy and pain, we can be confident that God has brought us together, and He will continue to grow and mature us through our marriage commitment. We are immensely thankful to have been given the gift of each other, and we cherish the opportunity to love as we were first loved.

ur love/hate story began in the fall of 1990, when we were both freshmen at The University of Texas in Austin. Rob and I lived in the same freshman

dorm and met by chance; but neither one of us cared for the other. The only thing we had in common, so we thought, was that we were both Libras—our birthdays are two days apart. We remained acquaintances through college, sharing friends but nothing more. Nine years after we graduated, Rob was living in Dallas and I in Houston. Rob would come to Houston from time to time to visit his parents. One weekend, he made lunch plans with a couple of our mutual friends. I, too, was invited. We ordered lunch that sunny day in October, and as we sat outside to enjoy the nice weather, something came over the two of us. It was love at first—well, second—sight. He agreed to share his sandwich with me, as I was not satisfied with my order. That gesture sealed the deal for me, and I knew I would be forever smitten with him. We’ve been together ever since. I guess what my parents have always said is true: Timing is everything.

regg and I met in the fall of 1998, when we were both freshmen at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. He was tall, athletic, smart—and quiet. I

was the outgoing Texas girl, so Gregg never built up the courage to ask me out. But we both admired each other from afar. Unbeknownst to either of us, we both transferred to schools in Los Angeles. About a year later, we spotted each other at church. We recognized each other immediately, and realized we’d been given a second chance. We dated for a year and, along the way, fell in love. Gregg proposed on New Year’s Eve in a room filled with roses and candles. Though we didn’t take advantage of the opportunity the first time we met, we’ll always be grateful for that second.

hen I was 13, I went to a New Year’s Eve party with my friend Courtney and noticed a guy I had seen before at church. We were introduced,

and I learned that his name was Josh. We became good friends right away, and stayed friends through high school. When Josh joined the Air Force and I started college, we went our separate ways. In 2005, we started talking online. Josh came to Abilene for Thanksgiving that year, and we had a wonderful time together. I realized that I was in love with Josh, and he said he had known he was going to marry me since we were in high school. Josh was stationed in Las Vegas, and when I went to visit him in February 2006, he proposed. We knew we wanted to get married in Abilene and set a date of July 8. It was very hard being apart all those months. Josh’s parents had the rehearsal dinner in their beautiful backyard in Tuscola, Texas. We had an outdoor wedding at Erinshire Gardens, where everything was pretty and green. Surrounded by family and friends, we began our life together that day. It was—and is—wonderful.

he background of this beautiful romance is best described by the poetry written and recited to me by my husband the night he proposed to me, down on

one knee in an extraordinary rose garden at the picturesque Ocean Club in the Bahamas. “Twenty-two years ago—one woman expecting, one contemplating; Little did they know what would come of their decisions. One boy and one girl, separate, yet intertwined. Living for the day they would meet and fall in love. That day came after childhood left. Without a prom date, she pondered her choices, deciding on a ‘city boy.’ Both on a field, with different passions. Horses and baseball finally came together. He was interested, and so was she. The journey would begin, but what would it be? From Abilene to Austria, Roman baths to Austrian Alps, Cathedrals to The Sound of Music. The world is boring without you. Your smile, your lips, the softness of your body. Your eyes let me into your soul. They express your everlasting love to me. Everything about you gives me chills. You brighten my life in every way. God has completed me, so that you might complement me. Come live with me and be my wife!” Of course, after I regained my composure, I said yes.

ur relationship goes back all the way to our sixth grade math class. Jeff and I were always flirting with each other, but we never took it further until

Jeff took me on my first real date to the ninth grade Valentine's Day Dance. From that point on, we became very close—but more as friends than in a romantic way. It wasn’t until Christmas of 2005 that we decided to rekindle the flame. We met up on the day before Christmas Eve for some drinks with friends. It was an instant connection, as though we’d never skipped a beat. We quickly became inseparable and grew to share an unbelievable love. The morning before the following Easter, Jeff awakened me at 2:30 a.m. He had made a walkway of Easter eggs from our bedroom to the living room and sprinkled rose petals all over it. At the end of the walkway, he had spelled out “MARRY ME?” in Easter eggs. He had also put out 13 candles, one for each year we had known each other. Once he’d set the scene, he had to devise a way to get me up and out of bed. He came up with the idea to tell me that his car had been broken into and the police were on their way. After he woke me, he hurried out of the room and shut the door so that I couldn’t see the rose petals. He got down on one knee, ring in hand, at the end of the hallway, hoping I would get out of bed. When I finally did, I opened the bedroom door to find the path of rose petals. I then followed the walkway and peeked around the corner to see Jeff kneeling at the end. I went crazy and barely even allowed Jeff to ask, I was so excited! When I sufficiently composed myself, I said yes, and Jeff slipped the beautiful ring on my finger.

fter six months of dating, Chris and I started the year 2006 in love. Over the next 10 months, we discovered that we had found our

The moment was one we will both remember forever. Over the next year, our beautiful wedding was planned, and our two families grew closer. In October of 2006, we were wed in Dallas with our closest family and friends around. The wedding went off perfectly. They say that marrying your best friend is the easiest thing in the world. Our marriage is a testament to that notion.

hen Justin and I met, he was working in Austin and I was attending Texas State University-San Marcos. Justinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister and my sorority sister,

Whitney Perez, introduced us to each other. Our first date was amazing and unforgettable. We were inseparable from then on, and I quickly discovered that he is the half that makes me whole. Our wedding was a dream come true. The romantic, open-air wedding chapel was breathtaking. We welcomed a small group of family and close friends to complete the intimate setting. The ceremony was performed by one of our dearest friends, making our day that much more special. As the ceremony came to an end, we rang the bell inside the chapel to symbolize the beginning of our new life together. We now live in south Austin with our young son Javen, and we love it. We are proud of the life we have created with each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;our relationship, our son and our beautiful home.

cott and I met while working at a summer camp in 2005. After the first term was over, we were set up on a blind date, which included my sister, her husband and

two other friends. To our surprise, both of us had a great timeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but neither of us took the date seriously. I left camp the next day and was not scheduled to return until the last term. Scott stayed to work the entire summer. Midsummer, I received a phone call from Scott, and we talked nonstop for two hours. We continued our phone conversations for the next few weeks, and when I returned to camp, he took me out on a date. From then on, any free time we had was spent together. When summer ended, our time together was limited due to our living four hours apart, but every moment was cherished. Our love for each other grew, and we became best friends. Having to say goodbye became unbearable. Long distance was a huge test, but we knew we could pass itâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and we were right. Scott is my love, my best friend and the biggest blessing I could have ever received. He makes me want to be a better person. We have made so many amazing memories together, and we look forward to many more.

through college, but it wasn’t until we met again in Houston after graduation that we started dating. It had to be fate! Fast-forward to the proposal: Jason and I headed to Tennessee for a quick getaway between Christmas and New Year’s. We flew into Nashville and stayed at the Blue Moon Farm in the rural historic town of Franklin. We visited the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Wild Horse Saloon and—my favorite—the Jack Daniel Distillery. On December 28, Jason took me out for dinner at Sandy’s Downtown Grill in Franklin. We enjoyed a nice dinner, and Jason followed it up with a dozen red roses, but no proposal. We headed back to the Blue Moon, where I was surprised to find a bottle of my favorite wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, candles and a beautiful bouquet of white roses in our room—the innkeeper had been in on Jason’s plan. Then, Jason got down on one knee and proposed. I said yes, but then proceeded to make him repeat everything he had just said because I thought it went by too quickly. It could not have been more perfect.

ynn and I met on May 21, 2004, at the Cantina Cadillac in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The first thing he said to me is that he liked my curly hair.

The compliment worked, and we talked for the rest of the evening. His mother told me later that he came home that night and said that he had met the girl he was going to marry. We talked on the phone every day after that. As we talked, we found out that we each had a set of family members that lived down the street from each other in Bastrop, Louisiana. The population of Bastrop is about 13,000, so this was strange. While I grew up in the Texas Panhandle, and he in the DFW Metroplex, we might have been down the street from each other as children visiting family in Louisiana and never knew. Our relationship grew over time into a powerful love. We had gone to look at rings, so I knew that the proposal was coming. Unbeknownst to me, Lynn had called my father to ask his blessing. His plan was to propose while we were hunting one weekend, but I was studying for the CPA exam, so I could not spend much time away from the books. He was forced to revise his plan. We were sitting on the couch on November 7, 2005, eating fast food and watching TV, when Lynn got down on one knee and asked if I would spend the rest of my life with him. I guess his late-night prophecy proved true.

ur meeting was not what you would call normal. I was a junior at Texas Tech University working for a financial company as a part-time bookkeeper. The

controller I worked for had a good friend, Dev, who took his place as the controller when I was out of town on an internship. When I returned to Lubbock to finish my degree, I resumed work at my previous company. Unbeknownst to me at the time, my new boss would become my future husband. We worked together for a year, giving each other advice on relationships and not realizing that our respective advisors were actually the ones meant for us. It only took us a month of dating to realize that the relationship forming was what each of us had been searching for all along. Nine months later, on May 15, 2005, I graduated from college. Immediately after the commencement ceremony, Dev took me to his home where he had set up candles and roses and was playing our song. He asked me to be his wife and, with tears in my eyes, I told him I wanted nothing more. We then met our families at a nearby restaurant and announced our engagement to them. Dev later told me that he had chosen to propose on my graduation day because our families mean so much to us, and he wanted them to be able to share in our special moment. It truly was unforgettable.

hris and I attended the same high school and even happened to work right next door to each other for almost three years, yet we never crossed each other’s

path. However, as fate would have it, in our very last semester of high school we were finally introduced by two of our friends, who were dating. The four of us were supposed to go on a double date and enjoy a day of boating; however, the boat never left the dock. A few evenings later, while Chris was doing his duty of collecting shopping carts in the supermarket parking lot, he noticed that I was glancing at him just a few steps away. Without hesitation, he took advantage of the opportunity and formally asked me out. Little did I know that this exact location—the parking lot—would turn out to be the site of my marriage proposal five years later. To make a long story short, after eight years of on-and-off dating and Chris’ two long military deployments to the Middle East, we were finally married on September 3, 2006. Despite being native Californians, we decided to recite our vows in the Lone Star State, at Paradise Cove at Lake Grapevine. Chris’ parents and sister already resided in Texas, so we agreed that this would be the ideal spot for all friends and relatives, far and wide, to celebrate our special occasion. And it most definitely was.

avid and I met through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, while he was on staff and I was a volunteer. We hit it off immediately,

and it didn’t take long before we knew we had found something special. After two years of dating, we got engaged on March 10, 2006, while on vacation in London. We were walking near a pond in Hyde Park and talking about how lucky we were to have each other and to have so much still ahead of us, when he stopped and said, “I want to ask you a question.” Of course, the answer to the question was yes, and we started talking about the wedding on our walk back from the park that day. We decided then that we did not want to look back on our engagement as a time of stress and craziness, and we agreed that no matter what happened on our wedding day, we would end up married, which is all that really mattered. That decision not to stress over the details definitely paid off: Not only was our wedding day absolutely perfect, but we also got to completely enjoy the year leading up to it—and have enjoyed every day since.

cott moved to Houston from Richmond, Virginia, to start a business. When we met, I had been living and working in Houston for over four years. Scott and I met

at our apartment complex in Houston. Though we lived on the same floor for more than a year, our paths never crossed. It was not until I moved to another building in the complex that we met—at the pool. Scott likes to tell people that I picked him up, which is not true. In fact, I had been attempting to read a book, and he simply would not stop talking to me. Our relationship began that day, and we dated for about three years before we got engaged on May 5, 2006. Scott proposed on a weekend getaway in San Antonio at La Canteria Resort and Spa. The evening we arrived, Scott took me on a walk through the hiking trails and proposed at a scenic overlook of the Hill Country. Scott, as he likes to say, is a “nuevo” Texan. Many of his family and friends were coming down to Texas for the first time, so Scott and I wanted our wedding to showcase the feel and atmosphere of Texas; thus we chose the Hill Country, the site of our engagement. Our wedding was elegant, yet low key—true to Texas.

y dad called it. He met Billy a few weeks after I did, and soon after—unbeknownst to me—told my mother, “Janet, I just met

your future son-in-law.” It sounded unlikely; I’d just ended a five-year relationship, and Billy had recently called off a wedding. Yet less than three years later, my dad’s prediction was fulfilled, as family and friends from Massachusetts to California—and many states in between—gathered in Dallas to celebrate the union of the New England bride and South Texas groom in a wedding that paid tribute to our backgrounds. We hosted our wedding at the elegant Hotel Crescent Court in Dallas, a site that was convenient to both my family and his. From playing my paternal grandparents’ song, “Satin Doll,” during the seating of the families, presenting a gift to my maternal grandparents during the ceremony and including the guests in the unity candle ceremony, to the fiesta-themed rehearsal dinner, the Maine lobster appetizers and the Aggie groom’s cake—our wedding was a true union of our upbringings, our personalities and our lives.

lint and I met for the first time when my best friend, his ex-girlfriend, set us upâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;or, I should say, tried to set us up. It was a disaster. Neither one of us was

interested, mostly because I took a date on the date. A year later at the high school state basketball tournament in Austin, we met again. Clint was a basketball coach, and I attended the tournament yearly with my father. We ran into each other after one of the games, and Clint invited me to come out with him and the other coaches after the game. We stayed up all night talking. After that, we kept in touch and had several dates over spring break. He lived in the Dallas Metroplex, and I in Lubbock, which was a problem. Luckily my parents live in Dallas, so I had an excuse to visit often. We dated and spent all the time we could together over the summer. I am an elementary school teacher and he teaches high school, so we both had the summer off. When school started back up, I returned to Lubbock to teach, and he resumed his teaching and coaching in Midlothian. Our goal was to see each other every other weekend. By October, I was flying or driving in every weekend. In January, Clint turned 30, and we had a birthday party for him. While we were eating cake, he proposed. It was a complete surprise. Though the first time we met was a complete disaster, our wedding day was absolutely perfect!

he first time I saw Josh, I thought he was the most handsome man I had ever seen. My friend had a picture of the two of them together, taken after

she had moved away from our small town to Oklahoma—she’d met him there. I had been up to visit her several times but hadn’t met him yet. On one of my visits, he came to her house for a youth event. I thought I would be the one to introduce myself—with confidence and poise, so he would remember me. Oh dear, would he ever remember me after what I said! I thought it over in my head a little too long and then walked up to him and said, “Hi, I’ve never met you before—I’m Josh!” Oh my goodness, the blood raced to my face as I realized that I’d introduced myself as him! That was without a doubt my most embarrassing moment. When I returned home to Texas that week, I told everyone how I’d blown my chances with this cutie because I’d botched my introduction and came off looking like a stalker. Who ever would have thought we would be married now?

hey say that mother knows best. For Shelby and me, that meant a blind date in 2003. We had both just graduated from college and moved to

North Texas. My family moved to Texas while I was a sophomore at Duke University, and Shelby’s family moved just before the start of his freshman year at Texas Tech. Our families lived in the same neighborhood, and our mothers were friends. One fateful evening, our mothers began discussing their recently graduated children, turning the conversation into a display of photographs and an exchange of email addresses. After talking for a few weeks, Shelby and I went on our first date, which quickly led to three dates that week—and a wedding three years later. The wedding was an incredible celebration with family and friends. The party started with the rehearsal dinner that went into the early morning hours, ending with a late night, fully clothed swim and a dive by my father into a hedge. The wedding ceremony took place the next evening, overlooking the TPC golf course. The reception was set in the pavilion, with gorgeous displays of white, cream and ivory flowers. It didn’t take long for the party to be in full swing, with drinks, dinner and dancing—I was even wearing my flip-flops under my gown by night’s end. Nowadays, Shelby and I joke that we need a better story to explain how we met; but after our dream wedding, nothing sounds sweeter than saying “mother knows best.”

alvin and I met in the spring of 1999 at a concert of Les Nubians at a local club in Arlington. Their hit, at the time, was a song called “Makeda” and was sung in French.

Neither one of us knew the meaning of the song but really liked the beat. We later learned that it is about King Solomon dreaming of Queen Makeda—a fitting subject for what proved to be a fateful evening. Though there were no real “ah-ha” moments for either one of us—albeit the night I made white chocolate chip and pecan cookies from scratch for Calvin could have been one—we came to realize that we wanted to spend our lives together. We were engaged in December, 2002, at Calvin’s home, when he surprised me with a beautiful solitaire while we were wrapping his mother’s Christmas gift. On Valentine’s Day of 2004, we were married at the African American Museum in Dallas. We chose as a theme for our wedding “Heart, Art and Soul,” which perfectly captured the most important aspects of our life and culture. “Heart” represented the love we share, made permanent by our vows, as well as the love of our families and friends. “Art,” which surrounded us at the museum, spoke to my long-held passion, second only to that which I have for Calvin. “Soul” was present in the spiritual element of our wedding ceremony and led to our decision to serve at the reception a wonderful meal of classic soul-food favorites that evoked warm memories of family gatherings and celebrations. Both our wedding and reception were true to this theme. It was an evening we will always remember.

ur courtship began 10 years ago in high school. We graduated as high school sweethearts and followed each other to Louisiana State University

in Baton Rouge. Louisiana quickly became very special to us, so when it came time to propose, Barksdale planned a very special return to our adopted home. In February of 2006, we went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and Barr proposed over high tea at the Windsor Court Hotel. We were dressed in black-tie attire for the Endymion Ball that evening, and our friends were anxiously waiting at the hotel. Salmon, caviar, champagne, tea, scones and chocolate-covered strawberries led up to his “surprise.” He asked me to hold out my hand and close my eyes. I did so, and he then said, “For this surprise, you have to turn your hand the other way. I want to trade rings with you, and make you my wife.” I opened my eyes, and he was on his knee. He removed the ring he gave me for our six-month anniversary and replaced it with a beautiful Asscher-cut solitaire. I said yes, and the salon guests—who had been watching everything, unbeknownst to me—cheered. We celebrated with our friends that night, and with 200 family members and friends at our beautiful wedding that December.

ohn graduated from The United States Military Academy in 1999 and was then stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Meanwhile, I was attending The University of Texas at

Austin. On the night of December 6, 2002, Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friends took him out for a night on the town on Austinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famed 6th Street. It was there that we saw each other for the first time, and he asked for my phone number. After dinner with friends that weekend, we were inseparable. Three months later, however, war was declared in Iraq, and John received official orders to serve his country. We had to face the difficult decision of continuing a new relationship overseas, but it was too late to turn back. We had fallen hard for each other and were willing to make it work. What was supposed to be a six-month tour turned into a long year of letters, tapes, care packages and tears. Thankfully, John made a safe return home. Our year apart taught us more about love, patience, hope and strength than we ever expected. One year later, in front of all of our family, John proposed on the same spot on 6th Street where we met. On May 20, 2006, we pledged our eternal love and admiration for one another.

t’s been said, “Never date anyone you work with” and “Don’t dip your pen in the company ink.” I don’t know how many times I have heard this cliché—or

how many times I’ve told my friends that one shouldn’t mix personal life with work. I was not looking to fall in love, nor was I looking to find a relationship. It was my first day at a new job, and I was escorted to my desk after being introduced to a few dozen people I would never remember, and a few I would come to love. One special person sat next to me, and as the weeks went by, we began to talk all the time. When the talking became a bit excessive, we switched to email, and constantly wrote each other. I knew early on that we shared something more than friendship. So we started hanging out, going running, drinking Jamba Juice and just getting to know each other. When we decided to date, we told our respective supervisors, who turned out to be less than happy with us. We knew we were professional enough to stay focused at work while maintaining our relationship. But personalities and politics presented a much bigger challenge than we could have ever imagined. Over the months we overcame some stressful times, finding great strength in each other. We dated and were engaged for a total of two years before we were married on September 30, 2006.

Michelle Brittain of Seventh Heaven Cakes says that doesn’t have to be the case; not only can wedding cakes be entertaining to look at, but they can be delicious as well. Having received formal cake decorating training, Michelle stresses the importance of choosing a cake designer over a bakery—because she only designs cakes, her services are more specialized and focused on the cake itself and not additional baked goods.

Her vast collection includes more than 20 recipes—perhaps red velvet or orange chiffon—and 25 fillings that range from a traditional strawberry to a decadent mint mousse. Working with her customers on cost, she encourages them to bring in magazine clippings because even the most expensive designer cake can be professionally and easily reproduced. So when the time comes to cut that scrumptious cake, the bridal party and guests alike will not only finish their piece, but they will come back for seconds.

ur story is a true New York City romance between a Texas girl and a New York boy. We both rode the N and R downtown train at 57th

Street and would exit at 14th Street and Union Square. The train was never busy and always carried the same 12 or so passengers. We always sat in the same seats—across from each other diagonally, about 20 feet apart—and would listen to our headphones. We were definitely aware of each other. This went on for one full year. One day, we crossed paths as we were about to enter the stairs down to the train. We removed our headphones and simultaneously asked, “Who are you? I see you every day.” It turned out we lived and worked a block away from each other. In a very short time, we were inseparable and in love. We would walk to the train in the morning and walk home together at night. Now, we walk together—forever.

ur story begins at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where we both attended college. Though we had mutual friends and lived only 10 minutes

apart throughout college, we never met. One of Frank’s very best friends who I knew from high school kept telling him that he just had to meet me and that we would be perfect together. There were several opportunities, but we never crossed paths. About a year after we both graduated, the Tech football team played SMU in Dallas, and Frank and I both wound up at the same barbecue held by mutual friends. It was there that we caught each other’s eye and finally met. Almost a year later, we had our first date. We’ve been together ever since. We dated for two fun-filled years before we got engaged. We chose Jefferson, Texas, for our wedding destination because we wanted the theme to be “small-town Texas,” and the charming little town was the perfect setting. We were surrounded by the people who truly mean the most to us—it was everything that we’d dreamed it would be.

ore than 10 years ago, when my family moved to Indonesia, they probably never thought that their second grader would meet

her future husband. I guess I didn’t, really; but I did meet his younger sister through my Montessori school. It was not until 10 years later, at Texas A&M University, that I ran into Rachel at a bookstore, went with her to see her older brother’s band and met my future husband. Meeting the future in-laws was easy, since I already knew them from years ago in a foreign country. Our parents had kept in touch through Christmas cards over the years, and Ryan’s family had actually displayed my high school graduation photo on their refrigerator. After two months of dating, Ryan left to help build a church in Zelenograd, Russia, for the summer, and I informed my family that I knew I would someday marry Ryan. We kept journals to each other for the two months he was gone, and when we read them on the day of his return, we had both written “I love you.”

A few months later, he proposed, with our parents hiding in another room the whole time. We got married on July 15, 2005, at 7:05 p.m., a time important to us because Ryan used to call me at 7:05 every morning—he was my alarm clock, and he always let me “snooze” for that extra five minutes. Our wedding was beautiful. We had an amazing photographer, Margaret Lake, who made sure to capture all the best moments and even helped calm me down when the wrong cake was delivered. It was a perfect day. We’ve been married now for more than two years, and we couldn’t be happier.

was working for an Evangelical festival in Corpus Christi in April of 2005, and Chris had been asked to set up the computer database system. The day he

arrived, I looked absolutely horrible. I guess I didn’t scare him off, because that night I was babysitting and he asked if he could visit me while I was babysitting. He came over and helped the kids with their homework, and once they were asleep, we tried to watch a movie. That didn’t work—we dove straight into intense conversation instead, which continued throughout the evening. The next day I saw him for dinner, complete with dessert on the beach and a four-mile walk. That night I realized I’d met the man of my dreams. Even though I was busy with the conference that weekend, we spent every moment we could together. He even prolonged his trip an extra two days so we could be together. When it came time for him to leave, it was a sad goodbye. As he was picking up his bags to board the plane, he leaned in, and we locked lips for a split second. He left me with exciting thoughts about what was to come. The long telephone conversations began during his layover in Houston just 30 minutes later, and they continued until September, when I moved to Dallas. In the meantime, we saw each other as much as we could and fell in love with each other over the phone. We were married on September 23, 2006, in Austin, where we both were raised. Ours is a relationship that puts Hollywood movies to shame, one that we will cherish forever.

oe and I both attended the same college. Soon after we met in early 2004, we began dating. On September 9, 2005, Joe surprised me with a trip to San Antonio.

He had arranged for me to have the day off from work, and we drove to a bed-and-breakfast overlooking the River Walk. That night, as we were going to dinner, Joe surprised me with diamond earrings. As I was putting them on, he got down on one knee and proposed. After dinner, we took a long romantic walk along the River Walk and drank champagne to celebrate. I had always wanted a summer wedding, so we began planning immediately. On June 17, 2006, we said our vows at the Timarron Country Club in Southlake. Even though our outdoor wedding plans were thwarted by the rain, it was a beautiful wedding. Following the ceremony, we had a brunch reception. We wanted to be sure that our wedding reflected our lives and interests, so we added a few personal touches to the reception. Some of my favorite love quotations graced the centerpieces, and the groomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cake had a live betta fish on top, paying homage to Joeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion for fishing. Most importantly, our wedding day was an expression of our love and lifelong commitment to one another.

ittle did I know that the overnight stay in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on our way to Beaver Creek would be one of the most memorable days of

my life.

Stuart—not known as “Mr. Romantic”—had been secretly working on the details of his proposal for months. After planning a day of shopping and relaxing at the spa, Stuart picked one of our favorite restaurants for dinner. Geronimo’s was what I considered a perfect ending to a wonderful day. I was totally unaware that while we were dining, some of the staff at the Inn of the Anasazi were transforming my room into a breathtaking setting for a marriage proposal. As I opened the door of my room after returning from dinner, I was overwhelmed by dozens of roses, strewn petals, lit candles, chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne. At that moment, I knew that after five years of dating, my time had finally come! When I turned toward Stuart, who had dropped to one knee and was smiling from ear to ear, he asked for my hand in marriage. It doesn’t get any more romantic than that! The following nine months were unforgettable and filled with showers, parties and planning that would culminate on June 16 in a magnificent wedding. Stuart and I will cherish the memories of that day for the rest of our lives.

eb and I met at a Bible study just following

my return from a five-month mission trip in Thailand. We knew each other from short

encounters prior to this meeting, but it was after that particular

Bible study that our romance began. After only a few months of dating, we both knew that we were meant to be together. The day before Zeb proposed, he buried the ring at the top of a hill that had a 30-foot-tall cross at its peak. On the day of his proposal, I climbed the hill with Zeb under the guise of burying a time capsule. While digging the hole, we unearthed the buried box. Zeb opened it, stating that to someday be married to Christ, we must first start at the cross. He then pulled out the ring and said that he wanted our marriage commitment to begin at this cross—and I agreed. The time leading up to the wedding day seven months later was filled with anticipation and excitement as we grew even more certain that the Lord meant for us to be together. When the day finally arrived, we structured our wedding to focus on how marriage is an example of Christ and His Church. We continually strive to embody that union.

liff and I had been dating about a year and half when he asked me to marry him. He took me to the Dallas Arboretum on Christmas Eve and popped

the question. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have asked for a more romantic scene. We decided to have a short six-month engagement and planned to get married on June 25, 2006, which was a Sunday. After all of the wonderful parties and celebrations and planning, the big weekend finally arrived. We decided to spend the Friday before the wedding relaxing with family and enjoying our last day before the real craziness started. Friday night about 1:00 a.m., I rushed Cliff to the emergency room, where we found out that he had a hole in is esophagus. My parents and his mother, brother and sister-in-law rushed up there to be with us. We spent all night Friday and all day Saturday at the hospital with 30 or so family members and friends. After spending 36 hours without sleep, I was sent home to get some rest. The wonderful people at Baylor were working hard to ensure that Cliff would be out for the wedding, but he insisted that regardless, we were getting married at 7:00 the next evening if we had to do so via live video webcast. At 11:30 the next morning, Cliff was released. Seeing him standing at the end of the aisle that evening after everything weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been through the day before brought tears to my eyes. Our wedding was the most magical night we could have asked for. We are so blessed to have everything we do.

friend of mine convinced me to try out a dating service. At first I was opposed, but after some thought, I figured I had nothing

to lose. I was pleasantly surprised when I met Casey through the service in October of 2003. We quickly became friends, staying up all night talking and really enjoying each other’s company. I was to graduate that December then head off to London for a six-month stint, to travel and see Europe before starting the real world. Graduation came, and I got ready to go to London. When Casey and I said our goodbyes, we both knew that there was something special between us. I got to London and couldn’t stop thinking about Casey. We talked daily, and our relationship grew. What was supposed to be a sixmonth European tour became a five-week trip. I returned to the States, and Casey and I married three years after we met—on October 14, 2006.

atthew and I met in high school and were casual acquaintances with mutual friends. I just always remember him being there in

the background. We went our separate ways for college, and one day happened to run into each other on the UNT campus. I had just transferred from Austin and he had just started school after working for two years. I remember being very happy to see him and not really knowing why. We hung out on campus until school was out. Then that summer, something happened to me that turned my life upside down. I did not know who to turn to or what to do. For some reason, I decided to call Matthew. He quickly transformed from a casual acquaintance to a very important friend and companion, taking me camping and out to parks. But I’ll never forget the day he took me rock-climbing. I had never done anything so physically challenging, and I had doubts. When I was halfway up one climb, I asked Matthew to let me down because I was tired. He refused, telling me that I could do it, I just needed to rest. I just wanted to come down, but he insisted I keep going and kept saying, “I know you have it in you.” He was right, I did have it in me, and he’s never let me give up since. That day so much changed for me. I discovered an inner strength and found a kindred spirit in Matthew. I spent five years getting to know and falling in love with this kindred spirit before we said our vows. More than simply my husband, he is my spiritual guide. I love him.

amaica would’ve been nice. Alas, it was not meant to be. Akshai had planned to propose on our upcoming trip. But as he tells it, the proposal had to be in town,

because he’d been keeping the ring for more than a month and the waiting had become unbearable. It also happened to be our twoyear anniversary. So he decided to go with a new plan—he’d propose at the drive-in! The closest drive-in location was in Ennis, 30 miles south of Dallas. We ordered some take-out to bring before making the trek south for the double-feature: Hitch, which was a bit of a hint, and

Boogeyman, which also seemed fitting, as Akshai was haunted by his botched original plan. We picked up some wine on the way to make the date more romantic.

Hitch was entertaining, though Akshai was very nervous, and I was preoccupied with thoughts of how I might bring up my impatience with his delay in asking “the big question.” During the break between the two movies, we took a walk to the concession stand to support one of the few remaining old-fashioned drive-ins. Under the nearly full moon, on the way back to the car, Akshai popped the question by cleverly getting me to answer it first. I was absolutely astonished. As I later told Akshai, Jamaica would have quite possibly been more romantic. But it would not have been as memorable, as I was expecting the proposal there. And there’s simply no retelling the look on my face that night at the drive-in.

met Jordan in fifth grade when he moved here from Detroit, Michigan. We were friends right away. We both attended a private Christian school, so we

stayed in the same classes all the way through until high school graduation. In seventh grade we started to like each other and became more than friends. We dated up until ninth grade, and then broke up. We didn’t talk to each other for a while and dated different people, but by the end of tenth grade we were best friends again. Once again, it turned into more than a friendship and we decided to “go out” with each other again. Our senior year, we started leading worship together in our youth group, Jordan playing guitar and leading on the vocals, and I playing keyboard and singing as well. When we graduated high school, we decided to go to different schools to see if the distance would shake us or change our minds about how we felt. He went off to LeTourneau University, and I went to Dallas Baptist University. After only a few months, we could tell there was no one else for us. There were many road trips from Longview to Dallas, and back. After much prayer and consideration, we decided to get engaged. Jordan proposed the day after Christmas of 2004. It was my birthday, and the whole family was together to celebrate. He waited for the right moment and then got down on one knee in front of all of my family and asked me to be his wife. It was a special moment for both of us, honoring a love that will last forever.

want you to take care of this young lady”— that’s the phrase that Rafael and I will always remember. Rafael’s boss wanted him to establish a

strong professional relationship with me, but Rafael knew that his life had changed forever the moment he laid eyes on me. He sent me flowers two days later, but I simply responded that my company was grateful for the gesture. We had dinner together a week later, but I was “too busy” for love. I didn’t trust reporters and Rafael was one; his passion was TV news, and I didn’t even own a TV set. Seven months went by without a real date. Finally, one cold day in March when I had been studying for an exam for many long hours, the phone rang. Again. This time, though, the conversation lasted two hours. One week later, we were dating. It was the beginning of a most wonderful adventure. We knew very soon that we could never live without each other, and we were engaged the following Easter. We married five months later under a gazebo overlooking Ray Roberts Lake in North Texas. We now live in Chicago, where Rafael is finally taking care of this young lady, and I am no longer too busy for love.

hris and I met at work—he’s a corporate chef, and I’m a food scientist. We flirted a little here and there, and a few months later, we went on our first

date. Both of us were nervous and excited, and we both realized we were risking our working relationship. After our first date, we were inseparable and soon knew our love was the permanent kind. Three-and-a-half long years later, Chris proposed on Fourth of July weekend, 2006. On the day of the proposal, I was held up at home with a sprained ankle. Chris whipped up a gourmet meal and opened a bottle of wine. We spent a romantic evening talking about our lives, what got us to where we were and inspired who we are. Late in the evening, Chris asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes and then proceeded to call all of our family members! We balance each other. We trust each other. We push one another to be better individuals. We make each other laugh. We are best friends.

ur journey to a life of love began at a bar. No kidding. I was the bartender, and Jonathan was the annoying customer who just had to get my

phone number. Like most ladies, though, I did not fall prey to the “Can I have your number?” pickup line. The night ended, but Jon’s chase persisted. A few days later, it just so happened that that we ran into each other in the Sam Houston State University campus parking lot. Jon asked for my phone number again, and again I rejected him. Eventually, after seeing Jon at school a number of times, I finally gave in. The dates we had were never disappointing: days spent watching college softball games; late nights at pancake houses; early morning talks between Frisbee throws; weekends in Galveston; barbecues with friends; meals cooked together; countless movies; and, of course, introductions to the parents. A friendship formed that could not be broken, and between all the fun, an unconditional love emerged—a love that will forever remain.

he night we got engaged is undoubtedly one of the most memorable of my life. Tim asked me to go for a walk with him around the ranch. I thought it was a

bit late for a walk but didn’t think much of it. So we went for a walk up to the Chapel on the Hill. When we arrived, I noticed that there was something stuck in the pebbles on each side of the walkway. As I got closer, I realized that they were cards addressed in Tim’s handwriting. I asked what they were, and in typical Tim style, he said he didn’t know but that I’d missed one. I had missed the first card addressed, “50th Anniversary, save me for later,” which was attached to the lamppost by the entry. I looked at him funny, but he pointed me toward more. As I continued down the walkway, I slowly gathered the cards. There was one for each anniversary to our 50th, all instructing me to wait to open them. I found the last card on the altar labeled “open me now.”

It read, “Congratulations on your engagement,” and he

asked me to marry him. I said yes—right after I asked him if he was “for real.” He’ll never let me forget that, and I’ll always have a story to tell: “The Best Proposal,” and it is all mine.

n June of 1996, when I was 26 years old, I moved to Dallas. Before I moved, a friend gave me a gift. It was a little braided rope with a red bead on it, and it

was called a “love anklet.” She told me that when I got to Texas, I should tie it onto my ankle and when the anklet wore off and broke, I would be in love. The moment I crossed into Texas from Arkansas, I tied it around my ankle. Five months later, I was sitting on a couch tying my shoes, and my finger got caught in the worn-out anklet and broke it. At the time, Florian was sitting right next to me—a sure sign it was true love! Florian and I met through work. I own a skin-care salon in Dallas, and at the time, he managed a French restaurant a few doors down. I was a frequent patron of the restaurant, and we became fast friends. Months later, our relationship grew into more than a friendship. We dated and lived together for nine years before we got engaged. On our nine-year anniversary, we dined at the French restaurant where he’d once worked, and afterward, he proposed, down on one knee in the parking lot, in the same exact place where we’d had our first kiss nine years earlier!

t was the summer of 1998, and I was a teacher looking for a transfer to another school. Richard was a principal trying to cut his losses by hiring from the

transfer list instead of having someone assigned to his school by the personnel office. Just a year later, I decided that leaving teaching was a better alternative than, in addition to other factors, working for a principal like him. Two years later, he proved to be my only chance at reentering the profession. So I took the risk of calling to ask for a reference. Grateful for his help in getting interviews and, ultimately, a job for the following fall, I bought him a drink after school one day. Thus began a friendship that would develop into love. From Austin to Denver to Dallas—hanging out on 6th Street, kayaking the Colorado River, snowshoeing in the Mosquito Range, building “Tex” the snowman during the blizzard of 2003 and jogging the Katy Trail—we’ve lived life to the fullest. Best of all, we’ve experienced every drink, paddle, snowball fight and step along the way together. And the best is definitely yet to come—wherever that may be.

rom day one, Garrett and I had felt like we’d been together for years and that we were meant for each other. We just fit. He made me feel like the funniest,

most beautiful person alive, and I made him feel like the luckiest man ever. So when he finally decided to propose, it was really a no-brainer— simply a matter of how to turn what had become an inevitability into a surprise. Garrett had devised a plan to throw me off course, telling me, “Baby, I think we should just take our time making this decision. Maybe two years.” His suggestion completely freaked me out. I mean, we’d been talking about getting married for a year, and suddenly he was telling me he wanted to wait. But Garrett was determined to make the proposal a surprise if it killed us. Unbeknownst to me, Garrett had already been talking to a jeweler about designing my ring and decided on the date—about a month from that night—to pop the big one. While his covert plan did burden him with the task of continually explaining that his sudden extended time frame had nothing to do with how much he loved me, it also reaffirmed our desire to be together. One night I said to him, “Baby, if it’s the money, you don’t have to get me a fancy ring; you can even get me a cubic zirconium. I really don’t care. I just want to be with you forever.” He was floored, and says now that it was so refreshing to hear his wife-to-be express her love in such a pure, non-materialistic way. A month or so later, it was I who was floored. Obviously, I said yes.

hey say it happens when you least expect it—that is how our story begins. Brian and I, a couple in our 30s, met unexpectedly one night. His friend

encouraged us to talk, as we were standing so close to each other. Brian and I quickly addressed every topic under the stars: family, values, politics, religion, our pasts and more. We had our first date within a couple of weeks. Despite my changing schedule—and Brian’s assumption that I was not interested—we ultimately did go out for dinner and drinks, and we continued to develop our fantastic communication. His anxiety was high, and continued for the first few months of our relationship. But it lessened over time as we began to recognize the importance of what we had—an honest, open and loving relationship. As I prepared dinner one Friday night well into our relationship, Brian entered my kitchen, got down on one knee and asked me to “put down the spinach—I have something important to say.” I listened to his kind words and, while in shock, said, “Yes, of course!” to his proposal. We called our family and a few friends to share the news. My parents already knew because, as I learned, Brian had taken them to lunch earlier that day and asked for my hand. Brian and I share a love that will survive anything we encounter. Ours is a special relationship that was meant to be.

ye and I met in 1996 as two very naïve freshmen in high school. We instantly sparked a curiosity in each other after we met. Yet with no relationship

experience to back it, our freshman-year romance ended before it really started. We wound up dating—and heatedly breaking up—twice more during high school. After graduation, I was accepted to Florida State and Tye to Texas A&M, and once again, we parted ways. It wasn’t long before I realized that I missed Tye. We connected again during the summer after our freshman year in college—this time just as friends. We spent a lot of time together and were content with just that, but there was still something missing. We separated again when school resumed that fall. Over Thanksgiving break of 2001, some friends from our high school decided to throw an impromptu high school reunion. At the party, a friend became motivated to give drunken motorcycle rides to anyone interested. Fortunately, Tye’s rational thought process outshines his motivational speaking skills. He did the only thing he could think of to keep me off of the Harley. He kissed me! From that point forward, we were attached at the hip. I transferred to Texas A&M, and we fulfilled our degree requirements in parallel. It was always a joke in college that, if Tye had to propose on a college salary, the ring would be the caliber of a Cracker Jack prize. Well, Tye took the joke to heart. He bought a real diamond ring and hid it in a Cracker Jack box, which he offered me as a snack. Tye was my first love, my only love, and now he will be my last love.

hmed was my triathlon coach. After about two years, I started coaching triathletes with him. One night after working late, we were

sitting on his couch watching Pretty Woman. He kept moving closer

to me. I really didn’t think anything of it, although my heart raced faster as he got closer. Ahmed is a very affectionate person so when he put his head on my shoulder, I just thought it was him being him. Then he leaned over and kissed me. It felt like the first time I had ever been kissed. Since that kiss, we have never been apart.

osh and I met at Seattle Pacific University, when we both went on a 10-week mission trip to Malawi, Africa. I spent many months after we returned denying that

we were anything more than just friends. Josh, on the other hand, was persistent and worked up the courage to ask me out. Our romance has been undeniable ever since. From Seattle, Josh moved to Waco and I to Dallas, both to pursue graduate degrees. Three years later, Josh proposed. At the end of my night shift at the hospital he showed up with a dozen roses and the first clue to what turned out to be a lengthy scavenger hunt all over North Texas. He took me to several different places that represented different things in our relationshipâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the African Art exhibit at the Kimball Art Museum, because we both love Africa; Lake Whitney for kayaking, because of our shared love of the outdoors; our church; homes of friends; and the place where we had our first kiss. That evening, the scavenger hunt ended at Lake Waco, where exactly at sunset he proposed. The end of that one adventurous day was the start of the greatest adventure of allâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the rest of our lives.

teve and I got engaged April 9, 2005, in the living room of our first house in San Carlos, California. The proposal was perfect. We had spent the day together—with Camo,

our black lab, of course—at the park, and when we got home I was very pleasantly surprised with a proposal! We visited Austin for the first time the following weekend. We had been thinking about moving out of California for some time, and after that visit, we decided to take the plunge. We sold our house in California, bought a house in Austin, found jobs, found a place to get married and arrived in Austin on August 1 of that same year. Even though we had just moved and didn’t know a soul in Austin when we did, it was really important to us to get married in the city where we had decided to start our new life together. So we had 75 Californians come to Texas for the festivities. In the Texas spirit, we were married at Austin’s charming Star Hill Ranch. It was a destination wedding for all of our guests—but we got to stay home. It was perfect!

ill and I met in Corpus Christi on October 27, 2000, at a bar called The Executive Surf Club. After two weeks of hanging out, we decided

we wanted to get to know each other better. I flew to Colorado after the New Year and continued to rake in frequent-flyer miles traveling across the world and visiting most of the United States and Korea with Bill. After five years of travel and many minutes on our cell phones, Bill and I were finally engaged. Bill had planned on waiting until the five-year anniversary of our friendship—October 27, 2005—to propose. He wanted to pop the question in Destin, Florida, a place where we had shared many memories. Plans fell through after hurricanes wiped out the area. Plan B was to ask me after a nice Italian dinner in California. Bill had asked the waiter for a private section in the restaurant where we would be alone. Ten minutes after we were seated, a group of soccer players and their parents showed up to celebrate a big victory. So Plan B was canceled. On to Plan C. I was flying to Texas on October 26, 2005, to visit with my family and friends, so Bill decided he’d drop me off at the airport and, when we arrived, tell me that I’d forgotten something in the car—I do that a lot. But this plan was blown after Bill came home to find me watching the Astros in the World Series. After a few memorable words, Bill asked me to marry him. It is a day I will never forget. We were married close to a year later, on September 3, 2006.

never thought I would find love while sweating profusely. However, while participating in a militarystyle morning workout program, I befriended one

of the instructors, David. Because this workout program was such a major part of my life and many of my close friends were involved, as well, I spent nearly every morning from 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. rolling around in the dirt and sand, doing push-ups, pull-ups and situps and running quite a bit at Memorial Park. David and I became close friends during my fourth year in the program, and we began quietly dating. After a year dating—and his constant motivation—we developed a deep love and appreciation for each other. One December evening, he came home and told me he could simply not date me anymore. I was shocked, thinking that our relationship was over. However, he went down on one knee, pulled out the notorious Tiffany & Co. box and proceeded to tell me he did not want to date me any more, but wanted to marry me instead. It was the most romantic moment of my life. I immediately accepted and we were actually married just three weeks later, on New Year’s Eve 2004. We were lucky to have been good friends with our photographer, Yves. The day was great, and the photos turned out beautiful. I never thought I would like candid shots at my wedding, but Yves captured us just at the right moments. He caught every wink, smile and laugh perfectly. Just as our wedding day was, our photographs are simply amazing.

hen I met Charlie, I had about given up on meeting my “handsome prince,” my knight in shining armor. I’d bought a 1930s house,

completely renovated it and planned to live there for the rest of my life, I guess. I was just finishing up the renovations and moving into my house when we met at the Kimbell Art Museum, Thursday, July 10, 2003, at a member mixer. We saw each other from across the room, and before the end of the event, Charlie had me doubled over laughing—he was on a roll! We had a date two nights later, on Saturday evening. The following November, Charlie asked for my father’s blessing on the way to the store to get cranberries for our Thanksgiving meal. He’d been trying to figure out all day how to take my dad aside to ask him, and I didn’t have a clue. Charlie proposed to me, on his knee in front of my family just after we’d joined hands to say the blessing. My brother-in-law had welcomed Charlie to the family but did not know what was about to happen. Charlie began by saying how much we have to be thankful for and how thankful he was to have me in his life. He took me by the hand to a chair, kneeled before me and asked me to marry him. He could not have chosen a better, more memorable way to propose. We were united in marriage, March 19, 2005, at University Christian Church, in a beautiful candlelight ceremony.

ason and I met at church in 2003 and became friends shortly after. He was really quiet and not my type at all, so we were just friends for about two years.

Meanwhile, I was doing a Bible study with a lady from our church, and for Mother’s Day her husband and children had made this beautiful collage of photos, with Proverbs 31:28, “Her children rise up and call her blessed,” written on it. I thought to myself how sweet it was, and at that moment I prayed, “God, I would love to marry someone like that. I don't think it will ever happen, but I would love it.” I never told anyone what I had prayed. For Christmas that same year, Jason gave me a gift. As soon as I got home, I opened it. He had drawn a picture and written Proverbs 31:10 on the back: “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.” I started to cry and told my family, “He would be the best husband, but I just don't like him.” A few days later, I began to think that it was quite a coincidence that he’d given me a gift like the one the lady’s family had made for her. So I prayed, telling the Lord that if he intended for me to marry Jason, He had to change my heart. After that, Jason and I became best friends, and over time, our friendship developed into love. We started dating in May of 2004, got engaged two months later and were married March 5, 2005. We had a beautiful wedding and a wonderful reception; but the greatest part was that I married my best friend.

t all began in the fall of 2002 in San Antonio. I was a third-year dental student, and Mike was a thirdyear oral surgery resident. We had noticed each

other around campus, but neither of us had gathered the courage to approach the other. Finally, I did some asking around and found out Mike was single. My friends finally pushed me to approach the handsome older surgery resident, and two weeks later we had our first date. We soon became close, supportive friends. I brought meals to the hospital during Mikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s long on-call hours, and he helped me with lab work for dental school. In the spring of 2004, I graduated from dental school and moved back to Arlington to begin my dental career, while Mike completed his general surgery internship and resumed his oral surgery training in San Antonio. Mike and I saw each other about once every six weeks and spent all of our holidays together. Over the next year, we got to know each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family very well, and in the winter of 2005, Mike proposed. On October 21, 2006, at St. Patrick Cathedral in Fort Worth, we united our families forever. Strengthened by long distance and our demanding careers, our relationship will last the rest of our lives.

lenn and I met in January of 2002—he was chairman of the board for the Texas branch of the American Electronics Association; I was executive director for

the central Texas branch. I had known Glenn as an acquaintance for several years and had always considered him my favorite board member. Not only did he have excellent ideas, he followed through with them as well. That impressed me. Though he lived and worked in Dallas, Glenn spent a great deal of time in Austin during the 2003 legislative session, working to pass a bill through the legislature. As a show of my appreciation for his hard work, I offered to be his ride to and from the airport. On one of those trips, we stopped for coffee. That trip to the coffee shop changed our relationship forever. After a year and a half of dating, Glenn proposed on New Year’s Eve, with all of my family present. After three years of dating, we got married. Our wedding, like our relationship, was driven by family. Our wedding party was entirely comprised of family members—Glenn’s son was a groomsman and his daughter a bridesmaid, and my 8-year-old daughter was not only a flower girl but conceived of the idea that the girls should be flower fairies and designed the dresses, which were created by a dressmaker in Los Angeles and a wing maker in Arizona. Our wedding was magical, and we still get phone calls from friends telling us what an amazing evening they had. Since our wedding, we have grown both in our own ways and together, and we only grow stronger with time. Our relationship embodies our devotion to our families and each other, and I can honestly say that I’ve become the person I am today because I have Glenn’s love and support as my foundation.

A graduate of Texas Tech University, Jolie Carpenter began her publishing career in Dallas. Spectacular Homes of Texas launched her book series that highlights the high-style and charm of Texas. For more than a decade, Jolie has worked closely with publisher Brian Carabet to create gorgeous books which dazzle readers with gorgeous photography showcasing Texas’ luxurious homes and trend-setting restaurants. Many of her original book titles are now published around the world by Panache Partners.
