A message from our
FOUNDER
Dear Fellow Cruiser,
Welcome to the third edition of Founders, Panache Cruises’ magazine. It’s exclusively for our most loyal customers.
Our last edition was exceptionally well-received.
We have added more content about Panache Cruises, more content about my colleagues and much more content about our cruise line partners.
Over the last few months things have really moved forward for us. We were recently named one of the Top 100 growing businesses in the UK. We are also exceptionally pleased to become the only specialist cruise retailer in the UK to score 5.0 out of 5.0 on Trustpilot.
Ever since our inception in 2020, the whole team remains laser-focussed on providing you with the best service in the industry. Nothing is too much trouble!
As a reminder, Founders is a programme specifically designed to continuously reward customers who choose to book their luxury cruise experiences with
Panache Cruises. It’s your passion for luxury cruising and your desire for high-end customer service that have helped us grow, and Founders is our way of thanking you.
Founders puts you in a tiered reward system where you earn points for every booking you make with us. You can then redeem points as discounts on future bookings. As you ascend the tiers from Bronze to Platinum, you’ll accumulate more points for every pound you spend, unlocking even greater rewards.
Many thanks for your continued support.
If you have any feedback, please do email me directly:
James.Cole@PanacheCruises.com or give me a call on 07940 115219
All the best for 2024.

It gives us huge satisfaction in knowing that we’re doing the right thing and massive motivation to keep going. We want to give our customers a booking experience that matches expectations that come with luxury cruising. We’re guided by our motto: Nothing is too much trouble.
CATHERINE DIVAN
Our Cruise Connoisseur is Catherine Divan.
This is our second booking in the last three months or so.
Catherine has been helping us find the perfect “Big Birthday” cruise.
FEATURED REVIEW
Her patience and perseverance is amazing. We got quite close to a booking, and after all her hard work, changed our minds. Catherine was so understanding and helpful. We then, in general chit-chat, mentioned a cruise we believed was beyond our budget, she listened, and after making some phone calls proved us wrong. That led to her securing not just the perfect birthday celebration cruise, but our dream cruise!
At the beginning of our search we were reaching out to a local travel agent as well as Panache. Whereas Catherine has been knowledgeable and responsive from day one, all we got back from the other agent was a bunch of web links and a note saying “take a look at these, call us if you want to know more” and we would never hear from them again. Well, silly them!
So with two cruises booked with Catherine. We can honestly say it has been a very enjoyable and fruitful relationship so far. Long may it last. And, Thank you Catherine.

NEW
In the past few months, we’ve welcomed two (or technically three) new ambassadors into the Panache Cruises family. Welcome to Jenni AKA Cruise Mummy and our newest friends Tony and Barbara Hallwood!
Introducing… Jenni Fielding
We are proud to partner with Jenni at Panache Cruises to showcase big ship luxury from the likes of Cunard, Celebrity Cruises and Holland America. Jenni’s obsession with cruising is more than a hobby; it’s a way of life. Over the past decade, she has experienced more than 30 cruises, each adding to her vast ocean of knowledge about life at sea.
Known affectionately to her followers as Cruise Mummy, the clue is in the name! She often takes her children with her on some of the most exciting voyages and highlights on her blog, social media and YouTube channel that bigger ships offer all the facilities and amenities suited to family cruising while still offering luxurious appointments and exclusive experiences.
Jenni’s accolades as Cruise Mummy include being voted as the Favourite Cruise Travel Influencer at the Wave Awards in both 2022 and 2023, a recognition that underscores her influence and expertise in the cruise industry. Welcome to the team, Jenni!
Introducing… Tony & Barbara Hallwood
Our newest ambassadors here at Panache Cruises is another cruise-obsessed duo: Tony and Barbara Hallwood! The pair’s excitement for travel and love of cruising is infectious and we’re thrilled to have them on board.
With many years’ experience of working in the travel industry and more than 60 countries visited all around the world, Tony and Barbara are truly passionate about exploring our beautiful planet. Tony & Barbara are delighted to be Panache Cruises Ambassadors, attending events and functions alongside the team and liaising with customers to chat about all things luxury cruising.
“In our role as Ambassadors at Panache Cruises, we hope to share our destination and travel experience to help customers to choose their perfect cruise. We have been so impressed with the team at Panache Cruises and the Founders programme that they operate. We look forward to working with the business and to meeting some of their current customers as well as introducing more people to the wonderful world of luxury cruise holidays!”

With over 22 years of travel experience, Catherine Divan is part of the Panache Cruises furniture. She’s travelled all over the world—representing Panache Cruises alone, she travelled on Oceania Vista, went to the Caribbean with Explora Journeys, seen the Mediterranean with Windstar; Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Scenic and so many more. The list goes on! South Africa was her favourite destination but Canada is next on her list, or maybe Asia which is home to her favourite cuisine. Ever the optimist, Catherine’s motto is the best dreams happen when you’re awake—and she’s busy making those dreams come true as she books cruises for a growing list of customers who keep coming back for more of her smiley, knowledgeable service.
CATHERINE DIVAN
CONNOISSEUR FOCUS
Ask Nicola a question about travel, and we bet she knows the answer—she’s worked in the industry for over 30 years. She’s an avid traveller and a destination expert to boot. While New York is her favourite destination ever visited, she dreams of experiencing Japan’s charms next… or a yacht cruise around the Mediterranean with her friends would suffice. Nicola is a professional and dedicated cruise connoisseur with a warm, friendly manner and a nothing is too much trouble attitude. In fact, last year she was our top seller, selling hundreds of luxury and ultra-luxury cruises to dozens of satisfied customers. Those customers are now happy Founders members, cruising the world safe in the knowledge they’re well looked-after by our Nic.

I’d like to extend a very warm thank you to our Founders guests who joined us on a mini-expedition voyage around the British Isles on Scenic Eclipse. Heather, Lilli and I had a fantastic time meeting you all, hosting you all and exploring the very best that these islands we call home have to offer! I’d also like to thank the Scenic Eclipse team who looked after us so well. Everything— from the food, the exceptional service, the Expedition team and everything else—was so well done. We thoroughly enjoyed our second cruise on board Scenic Eclipse. We especially enjoyed Elements, where there was a real vibe each time we dined there. It’s no wonder why this ship, one of the two World’s First Discovery Yachts, is so popular with our other customers and will continue to be going into the future. Is there a better ship or cruise line to see the world from every angle?
For a four-night journey, this itinerary was packed with interesting ports. We were reminded of how beautiful Cornwall is, experienced stunning scenery and wildlife around the Isles of Scilly, and had a lovely tour of Picton Castle and the Welsh countryside. My personal favourite was the visit to the Isle of Man. Fun fact: My middle name comes from the capital, Douglas, due to my Grandad coming from there. My first visit to the island brought back very fond memories of my Grandad and his Manx spirit! Disembarking in Dublin, we had great fun with the Irish guide on the coach to the airport to come home. I also enjoyed not one but two pints of draft 0% Guinness. It was absolutely delicious, and I couldn’t resist the second after the first.

WE’VE BEEN ON BOARD
Well, the overall Seven Seas Grandeur experience was out of this world. From the moment they took our cases in-port and we stepped on board, greeted by a glass of Monopole Champagne, to the tidy organisation of disembarkation, everything was pretty much perfect. The staff got ten tens from me, they simply couldn’t do enough for us. The whole cruise was seamless, and you can see why Regent is such a popular and well-respected cruise line.

Regent Seven Seas caters to passengers with refined tastes and a desire for top-notch amenities. This cruise line are known for their spacious suites, gourmet dining options and high-quality service. Lovers of all-inclusivity (aren’t we all?), couples celebrating special occasions and mature solo travellers alike; art and culture vultures and small-size ship cruisers are all part of the Regent Seven Seas demographic. SPLENDOR
Earlier this year, I was in my favourite place in the world, Barbados. Whilst there, I was given the opportunity to visit one of my favourite cruise lines, too — Regent Seven Seas! I got to spend the day on board Seven Seas Splendor, sister ship to Seven Seas Explorer and brand-new Seven Seas Grandeur.
She’s all-suite, all-balcony and features 375 suites from the Veranda Suite all the way up to the incredible Regent Suite. With a capacity of just 750 guests, she really offers an intimate smallship experience. And of course, you’re able to dock in smaller ports that larger ships can’t.
Anybody who subscribes to our emails or reads the Panache Cruises Blog will know how much I love Regent. Proper ultra-luxury, all-inclusive cruising where you can pretty much leave your wallet at home.

Now having had a look around this incredible ship it’s easy to see why they call it The World’s Most Luxurious Fleet.
The outside space is fantastic for soaking up the sun in tropical destinations like the Caribbean, looking out for wildlife on voyages to South America or Alaska, and for feeling like you’re in amongst the hubbub in bustling Mediterranean ports.
You’ve got the Sun Deck on a mezzanine level with lots of space for sun loungers and the pool deck below. I particularly like the sports Deck on 12 where you can practise your golf, shuffleboard, mini golf and tennis on those longer sea days.
It’s when you get inside that you get that real Regent feeling, especially in the restaurants.
There are four speciality restaurants covering French, Italian, steakhouse and pan-Asian fare in addition to the main dining room, buffet restaurant and Pool Grill. All included in the price of your voyage of course. I believe they call it epicurean perfection!
All in all, I’m completely blown away by this ship. Everything is absolutely spotless with plenty of space to yourself and the staff are absolutely fantastic.

SEABOURN
Find your Seabourn moment
Founded in 1986, Seabourn have been around the world and back again countless times on both luxury ocean and expedition cruises. A gorgeous fleet of seven ocean ships, with a capacity of up to just 600 guests, visits off-thebeaten-track ports that larger ships can’t get to. They’re also the official cruise line partner of UNESCO World Heritage, featuring over 150 sites on their itineraries. From the rugged beauty of Alaska to the vibrant landscapes of America; the rich cultures of Africa to the mystique of Asia—Seabourn goes there, wherever there is.
Cruising on a Seabourn ship is unlike any other form of travel—luxurious, yet relaxed; elegant, yet casual; sumptuous, yet understated. It’s not stuffy, it’s not up
itself—it’s Seabourn; relaxing, intimate and friendly but still ultra luxurious. Each ship is a work of art offering one of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the industry and guest to staff ratio is almost 1-to-1. So indulge yourself. Ships feature several dining options, including a brand-new restaurant. Solis showcases a vibrant, chic atmosphere and an exclusive Mediterranean menu; everything is included and the service is second-to-none.

WE’VE BEEN ON BOARD
After finishing our meal, we headed to the club where they were hosting an 80s night—my kind of music. The atmosphere was lively, with everyone up and dancing. While I’m more of a sit-downand-sing type, I thoroughly enjoyed the vibe. I ordered a glass of champagne and settled in to enjoy the music while singing along. Then, one of my favourite songs, “At Last” by Etta James, started playing and partners slowly made their way to the stage for a slow dance, creating a beautiful scene. Watching them, I observed a different kind of love that I had never seen before. A Seabourn Moment, and a particularly beautiful one at that.

AT SEABOURN
Not much gets the hubbub of chitchat going in the Panache Cruises office than a new restaurant on an ultra-luxury cruise ship. By offering light, modern Mediterranean cuisine bursting with colour and character, Seabourn have got us all in a tizzy with their brandnew culinary experience Solis. Showcasing a vibrant, chic atmosphere with a feel-good backing track that matches the menu, Solis is the perfect setting to create a Seabourn Moment or two—and that’s before we even get to the menu.
Masterchef and Culinary Partner Chef Anton Egger Senior Corporate Chef Franck Salein are the gastronomic brains behind two of Seabourn’s most popular dining concepts— Earth & Ocean and Sushi. Like those restaurants, freshness and flavour are the order of the day with a menu featuring both permanent favourites and seasonally-inspired dishes. Choose from meze classics such as grilled artichokes or poached Mediterranean lobster;
fresh seafood such as scallop escabeche or swordfish a la plancha; meats such as Maltese herb-roasted beef tenderloin; greens, grains, pasta and more. Besides food, guests are invited to indulge in an incredible new vintage cocktail menu, featuring an array of classic cocktails such as the Kir Royale or Mauresco to the always popular Aperol Spritz.
This new restaurant holds capacity for up to 90 guests at a time so bookings are required, but the cost is included in your fare. Initially launched on board Seabourn Quest in January 2024, Solis will grace the decks of Seabourn’s entire fleet including Encore, Ovation and Sojourn by summer 2024.

S.A.L.T.
SILVERSEA ADDS A LITTLE BIT OF by Rich
and Helen from Visit With Us
The best way to experience the world is to take a huge bite out of it and taste it. S.A.L.T. is an opportunity for Silversea guests aboard Silver Nova, Silver Moon and Silver Dawn to do just that. An acronym for Sea and Land Taste, S.A.L.T. features S.A.L.T. Talks, unique shore excursions with a culinary focus, speciality dining on board in the S.A.L.T. Bar and Kitchen; and onboard experiences such as cooking classes in an interactive lab for guests to get hands-on experience with cooking classes. Panache Cruises Ambassadors, Visit With Us, were on board Silver Moon in the Mediterranean to tell us all about it.
TO THE S.A.L.T. LABORATORY
The Lab is home to several cooking stations for guests to follow along with a chef leading a live class. Of course, these classes specialise in the cuisines of your immediate locality and every recipe has a story. We got closer to the food with an introduction to the history and significance of the dishes we’re about to cook. French Chef de Partie Cyril demonstrated how to make dishes such as spanakopita, spinach and cheese parcel, saragli, a Greek version of baklava, and finally moussaka, an old favourite. Everybody can take a copy of the recipe home to show off their new skills to loved ones. All in all, it was enormous fun, and very informative—it was even simple enough for beginners like me!
S.A.L.T. KITCHEN IS A STARRING ACT
The S.A.L.T. Kitchen is a dedicated dining venue to take your tastebuds on a journey through the Greek Isles, the South American plains, the colourful coasts of the Caribbean, the food heritage of Atlantic Europe and beyond. It certainly looks the part; contemporary but comfortable and each table is dressed with a herb pot as a lovely nod to the gorgeous ingredients used in the dishes. The menu changes daily so you never know what you’ll get—it’s always delicious. Alongside the food, guests are offered wines or beers that are perfectly paired and always local. In terms of culinary flair, this is one of the best eateries on the ship. It deserves more than a visit or two per voyage.
Our S.A.L.T. experience began with a S.A.L.T. Talk featuring writer Yasmin Khan, who shared her extensive knowledge of Cypriot cuisine. She introduced us to some of her favourite recipes, later demonstrated by Cyril from the S.A.L.T. Lab. It was fascinating… and delicious!
Next, we moved to the S.A.L.T Bar, an intimate space with about 20 seats, reminiscent of an exclusive London club. The walls, lined with exquisite bottles, evoked a mad Victorian scientist’s lab. The bar is headed by Carlos, a top London mixologist and drink genius, who mixes flavours both on and off the menu. After a few of his creations, we opted for an early night in preparation for our S.A.L.T. Ashore excursion on the
Greek island of Paros. On Paros, we visited a hillside organic farm, where the owner gave us a tour. Among the olive, pomegranate and fig trees, we enjoyed the sunshine before sampling freshly prepared food from the farm. It was delightful, and we devoured the meal at a rustic table setting—a marvellous day!

We strapped a GoPro to Partnerships Manager Natalie Eadon’s head and sent her all the way to Antarctica with Silversea Expeditions. A vast expanse of Antarctic tundra awaited as Natalie and Cruise Connoisseur Georgia flew from Manchester to Punta Arenas before skipping the infamous Drake Passage and boarding their ship, Silver Endeavour.
Snow? Check. Icebergs? Huge! Penguins? Plenty! But what is there to actually do on an ultra-luxury expedition cruise in Antarctica? Natalie eloquently tells us all about it.
WE HIKED AT ORNE HARBOUR
Orne Harbour was our first landing. It’s a mile-wide cove on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. We hiked a challenging trail to the top of a hill, and with the weather changing every minute, we were thankful for our expert guides leading the way. At the top, we met our first colony of penguins—adorable and fascinating chinstraps! We could have stayed there and watched them for hours, but with the weather changing, we made our way down. By the time we reached the bottom, the Zodiacs were completely stranded by icebergs, and we had to wait for two hours before they could return to the ships. It was an exhilarating experience; a real adventure.
WE SPOTTED WHALES ON ZODIACS
Every day of our Antarctica cruise involved some sort of excursion in a Zodiac, and we never got bored of the views and the things we saw. On that very same day, we spotted whales at Wilhelmina Bay! The ship sailed to this bay, which is 15 miles wide and very close to Orne Harbour. We were so lucky on this trip, but it felt like this day was particularly special. Our group was the last to disembark, and as we were cruising around Wilhelmina Bay, we were joined by the most majestic creatures in the world—two humpback whales! This was an experience I will never forget in my life.
WE DARED TO POLAR PLUNGE
I unfortunately couldn’t take part in the polar plunge (pregnant with my first baby, Indie!), but Georgia was so brave and did it! It looked both amazing and terrifying, and she said it was one of the best experiences of the whole trip. To be able to say she’d jumped into the freezing Antarctic waters is a huge accomplishment and something she will be proud of forever.
WE KAYAKED AROUND HUGE ICEBERGS
Gosh, this was a tiring but great day! Georgia and I are not kayakers, so it was quite a tough few hours. We spent three whole hours kayaking around icebergs in the Antarctic Ocean. We kayaked all around Spert Island within the Palmer Archipelago. It was amazing being right on the water, but this excursion was definitely for those who feel confident kayaking and are fairly active. We struggled towards the end, and our arms ached all the next day, but it was such a fantastic experience. I highly recommend this activity if you’re going to Antarctica on a cruise.

Ocean
Just another glorious day on with Explora Journeys Cay
By Jason Treadwell, Cruise Connoisseur
Ocean Cay is MSC’s private island in the Bahamas. It’s a unique destination where guests can connect with their natural surroundings and learn about the importance of preserving the oceans and coral reefs. It has been transformed to create a biodiverse and sustainable environment. There are several Explora Journeys itineraries to this island paradise available to book with Panache Cruises.
We sent Cruise Connoisseur Jason Treadwell there to find out what all the fuss is about.
After the most fantastic six days onboard Explora Journeys’ first ship, EXPLORA I, I didn’t think it could get any better. That is, until we docked at Ocean Cay. The white sand and beautiful mixture of blue waters had everyone on the top deck taking a quick snap of the incredible landscape before us. A buzz filled the air as we awaited the day ahead. Our ship docked mid-morning at the edge of Lighthouse Beach. The heat hit us as we disembarked the air-conditioned ship. Luckily, Ocean Cay was just a 30-metre walk down the pier, and we were greeted in the Arrival Plaza where there was a bar, Excursion Centre and an island buggy pick-up point to take you anywhere on the island you wanted to visit. Ocean Cay has endless possibilities for adventure.
The chefs and bartenders from the ship disembarked too, swiftly opening the bars and food stands. As we were with all-inclusive Explora Journeys, there wasn’t any extra cost for food and drink on shore. We opted for the Gourmet Burger Hut, enjoying a delicious bacon cheeseburger with a side of what must have been triple-cooked chips. It was the perfect beach bite. We then headed to Ocean Cay Lagoon via the buggy service. A pontoon floating 50 metres into the lagoon had previously piqued my curiosity.
I swam out into the lagoon to find my own little patch of floating paradise on the pontoon. But 15 minutes of total relaxation there made me realise that a factor 50 sun cream would have
been much more warranted than the factor 30 I had applied! With my colour changing to lobster, I made my way back to shore for some shade, and we made our way to Lighthouse Beach. We walked to see the spectacular view of the ship docked right in front of us—what a sight! There were numerous secluded beach cabanas providing shade from the blistering sun above. Snorkelling and a shipwreck tour were the most popular excursions available, and it’s easy to see why.
The only downside to our day was that it went by far too quickly. All the fuss is justified. I cherish my memories fondly and look forward to my next day at Ocean Cay. Hopefully, sooner rather than later.

CRYSTAL Exceptional at Sea
Crystal’s commitment to highly personalised service has always been a hallmark. Boasting industry-leading passenger-to-crew ratios, this cruise line is renowned for its unparalleled attentiveness on the high seas. With a maximum capacity as low as 606 passengers, Crystal ensures an intimate
experience with a staff-to-guest ratio of almost one-to-one. Recently renovated, the expansive suites and palatial veranda guest rooms now offer the pinnacle of comfort and refined contemporary design. These floating sanctuaries traverse the world, immersing guests in the most breathtaking locations and unveiling the unseen facets of each destination.
James was fortunate enough to have previously taken personal holidays with Crystal Cruises and was on board Crystal Serenity in the Caribbean late last year following their $150 million refurbishment programme. Exceptional personal service, fantastic food—including the only Nobu restaurants at sea—and renovated suites, some of which have more than doubled in size, were just some of the
benefits he found while sailing with Crystal.
Dining with Crystal is an odyssey, featuring exceptional dishes from around the globe—whether savouring authentic Italian cuisine at Osteria d’Ovidio, indulging in Japanese-Peruvian fusion at Umi Uma, or delighting in tapas-style creations. You can also enjoy a moment to yourself in a soothing spa space, where you’ll find therapeutic calm thanks to a beautiful design that emulates the sun’s golden glow.

Atlas Ocean Voyages charts the course to perfection
Written by George Rowlands
Photographed by Adam Arkinstall
You might think it easy to set up a luxury cruise line: build a boat, put it in the water, invite people aboard and send it to the Caribbean. Since its foundation in 2019, Atlas Ocean Voyages have made it look so, straddling a fine line between bougie yacht voyages and cultural expeditions in warmer waters and unflinching expeditions around our world’s cold polar region. Their three ships—World Voyager, World Navigator and World Traveller—feature a classic and classy look with a symmetrical design, a single funnel and a navy blue hull. Each looks at home in whichever sea they sail, and I boarded Voyager in Barbados to set sail for eight days in the Caribbean.
Like the merciful trade winds of the West Indies around us, check in was a breeze. Voyager is perfect for those looking to adventure without giving up their creature comforts—a blast of air conditioning as we boarded for the first time, a cold towel for my already-burnt neck, a huge glass of champagne and a canapé. We were soon shown to Horizon Stateroom 565 on the sixth deck which turned out to be perfectly placed. The uncrowded, undiscovered aft deck at the end of our corridor was shaded and empty most of the time with a pick of eight deck chairs; the top sun deck was a hop up one flight of stairs, while the main restaurant, Madeira, was a hop down two.
Portugal is a running theme of this young cruise line and a nod to Atlas’s parent company. Mystic Travel Holding is a heavyweight in the Portuguese tourism industry, with over 25 years of experience as the company behind DouroAzul, Nicko Cruises, Mystic Cruises and more. Each ship’s main restaurant is named after a region of Portugal and every itinerary features at least one Portuguese-themed menu in the evening. Atlas is actually the first cruise line to sail under the Portuguese flag, with their fleet of three registered in their home country.
At 270ft², our stateroom is a spacious twin and the entry-level accommodation. The flagship feature is a floor-toceiling Juliette balcony with a remote control drop-top window—perfect for watching the tropical sun rise as para-
disiacal islands float past in the morning. Besides the window, we were treated to an L-sofa comfortable enough for my shipmate to fall asleep on more than once, a minibar restocked daily with our favourite drinks by the wonderful maid Melissa, 24-hour food and bar service; Nespresso coffee and Kusmi tea; a wall-mounted television with, amongst other things, a livestream beamed from the theatre; ample wardrobe space for our horde of shorts and t-shirts; plush terry bathrobes and sumptuous Portuguese cotton linens by Lameirinho. Above all the bathroom is a pleasure to be in, featuring a walk-in mosaic glass with additional rain head and body jets. Atlas’s l’Occitane partnership shows itself here, in shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, hand soaps and body lotions that had me smelling—if I must say so myself—delicious. The rest of the ship is similarly modern, clean and contemporary. A soft colour
Horizon Stateroom

Spa by L’Occitane
palette softens further the plush furnishings. Above all, it’s comfortable. From the state-of-the-art Atlas Theatre where we were briefed, debriefed and expertly lectured towards the bow of the ship, through the cavernous Atlas Lounge where we were entertained by the Staff Talent Show—sometimes hilarious, often heartwarming. The reception area is spacious and airy while Paula’s Pantry is the cruise line’s casual cafe. Opening at 7am and closing at 6pm each day, baristas here were well trained to serve all types of coffees (regular and iced), teas, fresh juices and hot and cold snacks; pastries, sandwiches, pinsas, fruit and oat bars. It was a fantastic addition to Deck Five and a caramel frappe saved me more than once after a day exploring under a blistering sun.
And then we come to the ship’s irreplaceable main restaurant, Madeira, the setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I found something new at the breakfast buffet every day. It was broad, and some stand out offerings of a smashing spread included Iberico ham, carved right in front of you, a huge honeycomb that nobody seemed to know what to do with, a wide selection of hot foods (all the ingredients for a full English—beans included) and an even wider selection of cold: fresh fish, fresh vegetables, cold cuts, warm croissants and fresh fruit. The fruit was especially incredible—always ripe. There’s also a fresh juice station manned by Jasper, the happiest cruise waiter I have ever met. All in all, breakfast aboard Atlas Ocean Voyages is a winner.
There are two options for lunch. The buffet in Madeira is as far reaching as at breakfast. Porridge and cereals were replaced by soup in the sous vides, bangers, beans and bacon were replaced with all kinds of hot proteins; chicken, turkey, various fish and the rest; even Jasper the Juicer was gone, replaced by a chef. Chef could cook anything, from a beautifully simple Caesar salad to kaiserschmarrn, a chopped Austrian pancake dish that translates literally to Emperor’s Mess. The second lunch option sits up on the pool deck at 7Aft, the first Josper Grill at sea and the ship’s speciality restaurant in the evening (bookings required on the day, no surcharge). Open from 2pm ‘til 4pm, a small menu served burgers, hot
dogs, chicken wings and fries—all were delicious and followed by homemade ice cream. Flavours change every day, but I’d recommend lemon cheesecake if you get the opportunity.
It’s difficult to surmise dinner. The Always Available menu featured a Caesar salad and tomato soup for starters, a choice between beef, plant-based or salmon steak and a variety of sides. The plant-based amongst us are suitably catered to with their own menu every night. Highlights from my sailing included wild mushroom risotto, a tofu pad Thai and a lip-smacking tarta de Santiago. I can’t claim too much knowledge about those menus though because I was too enamoured by the a la carte, which took on a new theme every night. Indian curries, Mongolian beef, Japanese sashimi, Italian pasta, British beef
wellington and New England clam chowder were all fantastic. But it was Guest Chef Luciana Berry who stole the show for me. As part of the Epicurean Expedition programme, she served at least one dish every night she was on board. Linguado is a white fish and it was rolled for a meaty, hearty texture. It was served with a creamy and sweet plantain puree and a cassava crumb to make the full set—a trifecta of perfectly balanced flavours and textures complementing each other. I wish I could eat it again and again.
In the end this wasn’t just a trip, but an exercise in enjoying and indulging myself. If you’re looking for a cruise that combines high seas with high standards, Atlas has charted the course to perfection. An adventure awaits—and the fares are very reasonable indeed.

Combining big ship amenities with small ship luxury
Elevate your cruising experience with Big Ship Luxury. This unique concept from Panache Cruises provides luxury experiences aboard some of the most popular cruise lines at sea. Enjoy topof-the-line luxury experiences on some of the biggest cruise ships cruising the seven seas.
Big Ship Luxury is ideal for those who prefer more choice on board their cruise ship, including restaurants, cafes, bars, swimming pools and more, but still wish to experience the added extras such as speciality dining, exclusive events and even personal butler service.
One of the most apparent benefits of opting for suites on larger cruise ships is the increased space it offers within your accommodation too. These suites typically come with more room to move around, making your time on board more comfortable and enjoyable. With extra space, you might have the luxury of a separate living area, a dining space and even room for private gatherings, which can be especially valuable during longer cruises.
And did you know Big Ship Luxury is particularly good for family or multi-generational cruise holidays? Many ships have the option to select interconnecting suites, so you’ll feel like you’ve got an entire multi-bedroom apartment just for your family.
For families who want to enjoy memorable travel experiences together, but would prefer not to be part of the hustle and bustle of the busiest parts of the ship, our Big Ship Luxury partners offer luxurious cruise holidays with all the added benefits for each generation to enjoy.
While mums and dads can chill out by the pool making the most of included cocktails, the kids can be having a whale of a time at onboard kids clubs. Meanwhile, grandparents can retreat to the spa, play shuffleboard or enjoy a meal for two in peace.
With Big Ship Luxury, everything is possible. The emphasis is well and truly on the luxury experience, no matter which ship you are cruising aboard.
Gary Buchanan Queen Anne
There was a buzz in the air as the good and the great of Britain’s cruise industry mixed and mingled on board Cunard’s brand-new Queen Anne during an overnight showcase event on 1st May. In addition to the soaring Grand Lobby with its sculpted mural and curved staircase, the eyecatching glass-domed Pavilion, and the retro glamour of the Queens Room, it was the undeniable stylishness of the Grill Suites that was the focus of attention for several connoisseurs.
While devotees of ‘Going Cunard’ are familiar with the term Grill Class, it does require some explanation for those unaware of this curious categorisation, which can trace its origins back over a hundred years. The name is derived from the Grill Room on RMS Aquitania, the legendary Cunard liner that was given the moniker ‘The Ship Beautiful’, following her launch in 1914. Decorated in Jacobean ornamentation, this sumptuous, extra-tariff restaurant served grilled meats and was an intimate alternative to the grandiose first-class dining room. However, it wasn’t until RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth ushered in the ‘Golden Age’ of travel following the Second World War that the term ‘Grill’ assumed its distinguished cachet.
Designed with a nightclub atmosphere in mind, the Veranda Grills were secluded aeries tucked away at the stern on the Sun Deck. 80 first-class passengers, which often included
royalty and film stars, enjoyed à la carte meals and dancing until late into the night for a supplement of ten shillings. Endorsing the aura of forbidden pleasure, this theatrically decorated room was accessed by a private lift operated by a young bellhop who was guaranteed to receive a handsome tip.
When QE2 was launched, she too had an exclusive Grill Room which was available to all first-class passengers for a supplement. Three years after her maiden voyage in 1969, several penthouse suites were added, and to accommodate guests in this top echelon of accommodation, the Queens Grill was created, and the Grill Room became the Princess Grill. Subsequently, Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth were all designed with both Queens Grills and Princess Grills. Now Queen Anne is continuing the popular concept of Grill Class.
As holidaymakers seek ever more sophistication, cruise ships have
adapted to appeal to them, so round-the-clock dining, showstopping entertainment, and great views don’t cut it any longer. However, a private sanctuary that ups the ante in the luxe factor and purrs opulence, refinement, and privilege certainly does. The notion of a ship-within-a-ship encompassing the services and amenities that are a hallmark of smaller, ultra-luxury ships is a perfect solution for those travellers seeking to embrace the benefits of the prestigious lifestyle within these inner sanctums.
Grills Lounge
Princess Grill Restaurant
Designers of Cunard ships ever since Queen Mary 2 have elected to situate suites in the top-of-the-range tier at various prime locations across the most desired decks. Grill Class guests can savour an experience straight out of the pages of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. On Queen Anne, they dine in their dedicated Queens Grill or Princess Grill, both set in a prime location on Deck 10, which upholds an open seating policy. There’s the option to relax in the nearby dedicated Grills Lounge at cocktail time or for a dainty afternoon tea, and, one deck above, they can laze on superior deck furniture at the private Grills Terrace that offers a discrete sunbathing halcyon, far removed from the hoi-polloi.
True to her Cunard lineage, Queen Anne offers a range of accommodations, from the ample to the opulent. Grill Suites come in a variety of grades, six for the Queens Grill and two for the Princess Grill. The two 1,440sq ft Grand Suites (Q1 Grade) are located port and starboard on
Deck 6 midships and have spacious living areas and dining rooms. There are four 896 sq ft Master Suites (Q2 grade) situated amidships on Decks 5 and 7. All have large walk-in wardrobes. These opulent havens boast a décor that incorporates subtle, calming tones of green, taupe, and grey that are in harmony with the dark wood and marble accents.
Equally urbane, just slightly smaller, are the 34 Penthouse Suites (Q3 and Q4 grades), which span between 532sq ft and 647sq ft. The 25 Queen Suites (Q5 and Q6 grades) measure 507sq ft up to 577sq ft. In all Queens Grill suites, butler service is available to streamline and personalise guests’ needs.
The award-winning David Collins Studio was responsible for the design of the Queens Grill Suites, all of which have large balconies. The creative team was directed by Simon Rawlings, whose credits include the imposing Gleneagles Resort in Scotland, as well as the incomparable Claridge’s Hotel in London. He told Panache Cruises,
“Each detail reflects the commitment to crafting unforgettable experiences for guests and sets new standards in maritime design.”
There are 127 Princess Suites (P1 and P2 grades), all of which cover 302sq ft and are located amidships. They are fitted with comfy sofas, feature wall panels, and have generous balconies. The colour palette is of bold Cunard red hues, as well as overtones of gold trim and wood furnishings. These suites were designed by Sybille de Margerie, whose studio is responsible for the Mandarin Oriental in Paris and the first Baccarat Hotel in Florence. At the showcase event, she noted, “I really enjoyed immersing myself in Cunard’s rich heritage, drawing inspiration from my own travels. I focused on striking a balance between tradition and modernity.”
All suites have plush bedding gracing Sealy Cunarder beds, which can be configured as king-size or twin beds. There’s also a pillow menu. Queens Grill Suites have a mini-bar stocked with a complimentary selection of beer, wine, spirits, and soft drinks, plus a welcome bottle of champagne. The room service menu is complimentary. There’s a kettle for speciality teas and coffee-making facilities, while butlers ensure a regular supply of fresh fruit and flowers. In the evening, pre-dinner canapés are served. Other amenities include binoculars and a world atlas. In the marble-clad bathrooms with black and white checked tiling, there’s a plentiful supply of Penhaligon toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, and slippers.
Queens Grill Restaurant
Q2 suite
Dining at the award-winning Grills is one of the many reasons guests return time after time. In the Queens Grill, they can choose from a dazzling selection of dishes from the à la carte menu, which contains culinary gems and blasts from the past. Ordering ‘off-menu’ is a privileged option if guests fancy indulgences such as Lobster Thermidor, Châteaubriand, or Beef Wellington. They simply make the maître d’s aware of their request in advance (usually during lunchtime for dinner orders), and the chefs will strive to satisfy any gastronomic preferences.
The Princess Grill doesn’t offer the same range of ‘off-menu’ epicurism, with the most requested items including Dover Sole and Rack of Lamb. In both Grills, desserts offer the head waiters an opportunity to
show their table-side prowess when they prepare Crêpes Suzette, Cherries Jubilee, and Bananas Foster.
A special new Gala Evening menu has been created by two Michelinstarred chefs Michel Roux, for guests in the Queens Grill and Princess Grill. There will also be an exclusive series of Le Gavroche residencies at sea, as Chef Roux brings his iconic London restaurant to Queen Anne and Queen Mary 2 during four Norwegian Fjords voyages in 2024. The five-night residences will showcase a variety of signature seafood specialities and elevated culinary classics. Guests can sign up for a five-course tasting menu infused with flavours of the sea.
During the showcase event aboard Queen Anne, which was immediately prior to the maiden voyage, I dined in
the Princess Grill. From the exceptional modern British menu, my selection included Duck Liver and Madeira Parfait with Smoked Duck; Celeriac and Apple Salad; Lobster Bisque with Aged Cognac; Grilled South Coast Lemon Sole Fillets with Samphire, Capers, Creamed Leeks, Crushed Jersey Potatoes, and Sauce Nantua; Pistachio Soufflé; and finally, a cheese trolley offered a selection of Cunard ‘Stowaway’ Ewe’s Milk Cheese, Smoked Blyton, and Stilton.
Cunard holds a special place in cruise culture as well as British consciousness, and passengers hanker after a retrospection to an era when the sway of the Grand Salon was a metaphor for decorum and haughty grandeur. It would have been all too easy for designers to create a pastiche of Art Deco meets smart deco. Instead, the fleet of four ships revels in a wealth of modern patrician comforts that coexist in perfect harmony with the decadence and romance of yesteryear.
Aboard Queen Anne, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2, and Queen Victoria, Grill Class offers guests a gilt-edged ticket to a unique realm of glamour and untold bragging rights.

FAMILY CRUISES
Cruise Mummy
Jenni Fielding
For families who want to enjoy memorable travel experiences together, but who prefer not to be part of the hustle and bustle of the busiest parts of the ship, our Big Ship Luxury partners offer luxurious cruise holidays with all the added benefits for each generation to enjoy.
Cruising on a bigger, ‘mainstream’ ship gives children the opportunity to join kids clubs and be looked after by a dedicated team of entertainers on board.
Meanwhile, the rest of the family can retreat to their own private and exclusive area of the ship for the luxurious, peaceful experience they might be craving. Rather than fighting for a sunbed or queueing for the buffet, enjoy some peace and quiet in your ship’s VIP area or reserve a table at a speciality restaurant on board.
Our ambassador Jenni, also known as Cruise Mummy, tells us why family cruises are a great experience for everyone…
Resort Deck, Celebrity Edge
The allure of the open sea and the thrill of discovering new destinations are the well-known joys of cruising. But for those who like to travel with children, there’s an extra layer of magic that you just can’t replicate with a holiday on land.
As a dedicated cruiser and a mum, I love how family cruises seamlessly blend relaxation and excitement, creating the perfect backdrop for precious family memories. What I adore about family cruising is the huge variety of activities and amenities tailored to every age group. Watching my kids’ faces light up as they race down thrilling water slides or make new friends on the sports courts is pure joy.
Dining on a family cruise is another highlight for me. With a plethora of dining options, from gourmet restaurants to casual buffets, everyone’s tastes are catered to. The flexibility of dining times means we can enjoy meals together as a family, or romantic dates for two once the kids have eaten and headed off to the club.
On a cruise, each port of call brings a brand new adventure, whether it’s snorkelling in the sea, exploring ancient ruins, or simply strolling to the nearest playground.
For me, family cruising is also about the value. With so much included in the fare - accommodation, meals,
entertainment and activities-it’s an incredibly cost-effective way to enjoy a luxury holiday.
Cruising takes the hassle out of planning and allows us to focus on what truly matters-spending quality time together and making memories. And, most importantly, never, ever hearing the words “Mum, I’m bored!”.

RIVER OF GOLD
Sophie Pearson, Panache Cruises’ resident river cruise expert, loves the River Douro. She knows each cruise line like the back of her hand, and she talks us through her dream Douro itinerary taking in the very best of Portugal’s most famous waterway.
Spend the day and night in Porto with APT
I’d love a one-night pre-cruise in Porto to explore its beautiful 16th century Old Town, head up on the cable car and sample at least one or two tipples of the local port wine! APT offers traditional cooking demonstrations at a local restaurant. In the evening, guests are invited to Palácio da Bolsa for a private guided tour, a cocktail reception and a traditional Fado performance in the Arabian Hall. A proper Portuguese way to start your Douro adventure.
Dock at Pinhão with AmaWaterways
First stop I would head to my favourite quinta in the area of Pinhao.(something like a French chateau overlooking a vineyard) and taste some delicious wine! An exclusive Portuguese lunch is enjoyed at the Quinta da Avessada before (and while!) we get to savour the sweet nectar of this region. It’s also a very interesting museum about the area. A top travel agent tip is to check out the beautiful tiles in the train station.
Paint tiles with Avalon Waterways
Avalon Waterways are one of my favourite cruise lines, and they have a professional painter on board their ships for the Douro. I want to paint typically Portuguese tiles! Actually, it’s worth noting that the Douro is closed for sailing at night so it’s important that you choose a cruise line with plenty to do on board as you sail throughout the day.
Drink more wine in Barca d’Alva with Uniworld
Although many port wine estates are owned by international corporations nowadays, the tradition of the family-owned estate remains strong and they’re much nicer to explore.
Discovering all about the grapes, their varieties and all that is interesting, but it’s the tasting that I’m interested in! This area is also well-known for its almond and delicious olives.

Contemporary bathrooms, complete with a rain shower, add an extra touch of luxury.
The 118-passenger MS Porto Mirante runs departures between July and October, offering cultured river cruisers the opportunity to bask in Iberian late-summer sunshine. It’s a bit of a cliché, but Portugal really is sensational this time of year.

Expedition
We live in a wonderful world. From the North Pole to the South; the Galapagos Islands in the west to Papua New Guinea in the east, there’s so much to see. Imagine flora, fauna, beating cities, dense jungles, vast deserts, and Herculean mountain ranges. The best thing is all these incredible places are washed by oceans and seas. We can drink in everything our wonderful world has to offer from the comfort of a luxurious, purpose-built cruise ship.
Expeditions travel out of your comfort zone in absolute comfort. To say these holiday destinations are off-the-beaten-track would be an understatement; these are not holiday destinations at all. They’re experiences set amongst the farthest-flung corners of the globe. Walk paths that have
as yet been untrodden. See the environment in ways that you have only ever seen on nature shows or in books. An expedition cruise is an adventure waiting to happen.
Expedition cruise ships are designed to nourish every part of your being. Your mind is nourished by onboard lectures, science facilities, Zodiac tours, and more. Your body through beautiful spa facilities, modern and comfortable accommodations, food worthy of the finest restaurants, and more. Some ships have submarines and helicopters, helping you get to the heart of a place; to feel its soul. Welcome to expedition cruising, where you’re no longer a simple holidaymaker.
You’re a real-life adventurer.

“If you can describe Antarctica, you haven’t been.” The captain of HX Hurtigruten Expeditions’ MS Fridtjof Nansen, told us this early on our once in a lifetime trip to the seventh continent, Antarctica. I felt so immersed from day one and the expedition team on board made every single day a thrilling experience. If you ever get the chance to sail with HX (especially to Antarctica!) then you have to go.

An overnight stay in Buenos Aires is the ideal way to start your Antarctic adventure.
Home to a proud and diverse community of porteños, or ‘people of the port’, this city is a sensuous fusion of faded European splendour and Latin American panache. There are plenty of places to explore, including many parrillas serving authentic Argentine steak. Or maybe you’d like to practise your dance moves in the hometown of sultry tango dancing.

Antarctica
Nothing prepares you for your first sight of Antarctica’s immense, frozen beauty. Surrounded by looming glaciers, and icebergs the size of floating cathedrals, Antarctica will fill you with wonder. Perhaps the most surprising part of Antarctica is the silence. It’s a stillness that’s broken every so often by the locals–the wildlife. You’ll join the Expedition Team on landings and ice-cruises, and may even get a chance to go kayaking among the icebergs.

Life’s a cruise on a luxury yacht
The difference between yacht cruising and ocean cruising lies in size. Yachts are much smaller than typical ocean ships, often with fewer than 100 people on board. They tend to head towards smaller destinations and are able to dock in smaller ports. The result is a relaxed and personable onboard atmosphere, offering guests the chance to get to know each other and staff on a more personal level. They offer a much more relaxed community vibe than larger ocean ships, and even the itineraries can be more relaxed. Excursions, activities and even destinations can be altered on the day depending on guest preferences.
So next time you cruise, consider a luxury or ultra-luxury yacht cruise. You can explore some of the world’s most exclusive destinations: the Greek islands, the Caribbean, the Adriatic coast and more.
Indulge in the exceptional service of a dedicated crew, savour gourmet cuisine crafted by some of the world’s finest chefs and embark on voyages aboard some of the most sophisticated cruise ships available today. Experience luxury and adventure with Ponant, where every journey takes you to extraordinary destinations, offering an authentic and high-end travel experience.
Explore secluded ports, hidden seas, untouched beaches, and remote landscapes as Ponant’s experts curate unique itineraries that steer clear of crowded tourist routes. With an elegant French flair and an intimate small-ship capacity, Ponant’s diverse fleet includes the world’s first icebreaker cruise ship, Le Commandant Charcot, and the pioneering catamaran cruise ship, Le Ponant.
The smaller size of Ponant’s ships allows access to exclusive ports and pristine locations. On board, the limited number of passengers ensures a private yachtlike atmosphere, where everyone can enjoy special moments. Ponant embodies the French art de vivre across every ocean, offering an iconic cruising experience aboard some of the most beautiful ships afloat.
