Only by venturing beyond the intensity of the capital can one begin to appreciate the deeper and more subtle roots of Korean culture that continue to grow and flourish far beyond the breakneck pace of Seoul. Living Pictures: The Philosophy Behind the Most Beautiful Japanese Gardens

The traditional Japanese Zen garden is rightly famous for its understated beauty, from the perfectly raked gravel of Zen temples to the serene tea houses reflected in mirror-like ponds. The gardeners themselves treat these gardens as a canvas, using the seasons as paintbrushes and employing minimalism to dictate a sense of balance. From the meticulous pruning, leaf by leaf, of each bush, to the weeding of a neighborhood flower patch with a pair of chopsticks, gardening in Japan is an exercise in meditation. It inspires mindful contemplation in both the garden’s creator and its viewer.

The practice of ordering nature in Japan has a long history, with the first known treatise on garden design, Sakuteiki, dating back a thousand years. “There are so many different styles that range over time and place,” says expert garden designer Toby Musgrave who has written 10 books on gardens and holds a Ph.D. in garden history.

In his experience, the diversity and types of Japanese gardens surprise many visitors to the country. The karesansui, or dry gardens (famous for their raked gravel, and often associated with Zen Buddhism), remain the most well-known, and Japanese garden sand design is practically an art form. But landscape gardens, strolling gardens and tea gardens shouldn’t be overlooked, either. Musgrave explains, “Even within one genre, such as the dry gardens, you can get such a diversity of those as well.”

Silversea’s Included Shore Excursion Programme: On all Classic Cruises of Silver Muse, Silver Moon, Silver Dawn, Silver Spirit, Silver Whisper and Silver Shadow, selected shore excursions (one per guest/port/day), if available, will be offered on a complimentary basis. Shore excursions will be bookable at least 180 days prior to sailing, on “first-come-first-served” basis, although a presale period will be dedicated to Venetian Society guests. Shore Excursions may require minimum participation levels to operate so it is recommended to sign up as early as possible. Silversea reserves the right to cancel any excursions including free shore excursions. Silversea’s “Included Private Executive Transfers Service”: Silversea, in partnership with Blacklane will offer chauffeured transportation from the guests’ home to their departure airport and return service (home) at the end of their vacation. Blacklane brings its high-quality airport transfer experience to hundreds of thousands of premium clients each year. Silversea is committed to extending its premium quality and high service to guests’ front doors as an

essential part of the Silversea experience. Silversea’s exclusive Private Executive Transfers service is available for reservation as a component of Silversea’s Door-to-Door all-inclusive offer, on all cruises. Standard cruises as well as “Special Combos”, “Grand Voyages” and full World Cruises qualify for this inclusion, on Silversea’s “Privilege Fares” (reduced rates do not qualify). These transportation services are not operated by Silversea. Guests choosing to accept this service must complete their booking and agree to the terms and conditions provided by Blacklane on www.blacklane.com or their mobile application. Silversea will cover the cost of a pre-determined distance (based on the cruise), up to 50 miles. Should the distance of the trip be longer than the covered mileage guests will be able to pay for the additional miles directly with Blacklane.
