Here’s why.
It’s a land of extremes and superlatives as the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on Earth with the highest average elevation of all the continents. Everything in Antarctica is mind-blowingly big and dramatic. It holds 90 percent of the world’s ice and 70 percent of the fresh water. About 98 percent of its surface is covered in ice, more than a mile thick. It’s the least densely populated continent by far, with just a few thousand residents scattered at research stations.

Two centuries after its discovery in 1820, the White Continent remains almost as mysterious as during the days of its earliest exploration. And therein lies its appeal. This desolate, frozen landmass — the coldest, driest and windiest continent on earth — beckons as the ultimate travel destination.

“It was unreal,” says Ross. “It’s like another planet and not like anything else I’ve ever seen. It just feels absolutely colossal. Being on the Antarctic Peninsula and on this tiny section of the entire continent where there is basically nothing except snow and mountains was just otherworldly.”
Expedition filmmaker Ross Vernon McDonald filmed the history-rich location during a voyage aboard Silversea’s SilverExplorer, his genuine awe for the place evident as a first time visitor to the hostile environment that is Antarctica.
mind scenes of endless ink blue ocean and an ice sheet that spans as far as the eye can see. So the natural harbour of Port Lockroy, a former military base and research station which is home to the world’s most isolated post office, is an unexpected treasure to explore.

“It was really interesting to be in this place which has changed hands over the years from different industries. It still has old rusty remains of where they used to tie up whaling ships and also going forward to the war time when it was a British research station. It’s really beautiful how they’ve kept areas of it,” Ross says.
“It’s got four or five different small buildings and two of them have been kept as they were. All the old technology has been preserved alongside their bunks and paintings that people did when they were out there on their own for months. It’s so interesting to be able to see how they lived.”

PRE & POST LAND ADVENTURES
GOLDEN CIRCLE AND BLUE LAGOON 3 nights pre / 2 nights post cruise Heading out from Reykjavik by comfortable ground transport, experience a multi-day immersion in Southwest Iceland’s classic “Big Three” attractions – thundering Gullfoss Waterfall, the steamy phenom of Geysir Geothermal Area, and the mossy beauty of UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park. And, as if that array of natural wonders wasn’t sufficiently impressive, add in a trip across the surreal lava landscape of Reykjanes Peninsula for a relaxing soak in the Blue Lagoon – a brilliantly azure geothermal spa renowned for its healing properties.
/ VOYAGES
• Go whale watching in Iceland’s Skjálfandi Bay in search of humpbacks, seis and blues
Kissed by the midnight sun’s ethereal warmth, the Arctic’s brief summer thaw is a tempting invitation for the truly adventurous to journey northward – to the Arctic Circle and beyond to explore Svalbard, Iceland, Greenland, and the Canadian Arctic. Blanketed in uncompromised luxury aboard Silver Cloud or Silver Wind, you’ll find our brand of Far North exploration far more accommodating than that which Ross, Amundsen, and Parry endured… yet no less exhilarating. That could mean scanning the horizon for Polar Bears, taking a Zodiac cruise to access a remote Inuit community, or kayaking glacial Arctic seas for extraordinary views of stunning landscapes.
• Get closer by Zodiac to the seabird cliffs of Norway’s Bear Island
• Choose from a varied collection of itineraries, either country specific or a combination of two
Silversea’s extensive explorations throughout this region range from a full circumnavigation of Svalbard to a rare transit of the fabled Northwest Passage, giving you extraordinary options for your Arctic adventures.

Few voyages, if any, are as formidable as the Northeast Passage. The iconic route weaves through the Arctic’s most remote reaches and was taken by the famous explorers of yesteryear. Unpredictable weather and ice conditions, combined with extreme isolation, mean that charting this passage through the Arctic is a challenge, indeed.
For the first time in the cruise line’s history, and with utmost respect for the natural environment and the creatures that dwell within, Silversea’s guests conquered the Northeast Passage in 2019. Accompanied by a team of expedition experts, travelers journeyed over 5,000 NM from Nome to Tromso.
“…within a short time we had spotted two polar bears – a mother with her wellgrown cub. Great ‘white’ bears that were more accurately a rich golden-yellow color, contrasting with the brilliant blue-white ice on which they walked.
Now, thanks to this pioneering voyage, we bring you the famed Northeast Passage in pictures. Retrace their steps on this once-in-a-lifetime experience through 10 spectacular images that capture 10 standout highlights. Accompanying words from the expedition team’s daily logs—recorded while on board Silver Explorer, throughout the journey—bring the expedition to life like never before and showcase Silversea’s destination expertise.

“During the night, Silver Explorer had carried us north, towards the area that the sea ice charts we had been examining so closely throughout this voyage indicated would be covered with ice,” begins Dr. Danae Sheehan, Ornithologist and member of Silversea’s Expedition Team. “As always, our constant companion, the Russian icebreaker, traveled ahead of us, ensuring that our passage was a safe one. By the time we arose, the edge of this vast, frozen Arctic realm was visible ahead – the bows of the icebreaker ready to push its way through. For a while, before heading into the pack, we followed the edge of the Arctic ice northwards. The whole Expedition Team was out on deck, scanning the icy scene for any sign of the wildlife that makes its home here. We were in luck…”

Long stretches of white ice, up to three meters thick, bob on the surface of the Arctic Ocean. This so-called sea ice, which originates in the ocean, is vastly different from that which forms on land. The smallest type is brash ice—usually the size of ice cubes or as big as your fist. Growlers, on the other hand, are a few meters in diameter and are named for the rumbling sound they emit.

On a cruise in the Arctic Circle, you quickly develop an appreciation for the immense variety of ice formations, which make it one of the world’s most dazzling natural wonders. Not only is every single ice formation distinct and strangely beautiful, but each tells a story from a certain point in history, whether recently formed or hundreds of years old. “The Inuit have dozens of words to describe snow and ice,” says Dr. David Millar, a Glaciologist with the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary. “That’s how varied the landscape is.”

Known for its rugged terrain of glaciers and frozen tundra (so cold that the Global Seed Vault is buried in permafrost 300 feet deep into the side of a mountain in Longyearbyen), Svalbard is the ultimate “Land of the Polar Bear.”
Situated in the High Arctic midway between Norway and the North Pole, this archipelago is relatively ice-free during summer, presenting rare opportunities to explore its dramatic landscape of magnificent fjords and towering cliffs home to millions of nesting birds. With 29 preserved natural areas, seven national parks, and six nature reserves, nearly all of Svalbard is protected; it is on Norway’s tentative list for nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Travel the path of Leif Eriksson to explore the massive ice fields, lush green valleys, and Arctic tundra of Greenland. There are no roads here, only vast swaths of magnificent wilderness and some of Earth’s most beautiful fjords. For a truly off-the-beaten-track travel destination, nothing beats expedition travel like a journey through the furthest east of Russia. A raw experience of adventure through jaw-dropping, beautiful landscapes, we’ll visit remote shores and unique coastlines. This is a part of the world where survival is difficult, and few have persevered against the odds, including the magnificent wildlife that roams across this largely untouched part of the world. We’ll visit ancient Soviet outposts and witness cultural paradoxes you never imagined possible, including people and towns hidden from view and from history itself.
