Pansy Cool WaveÂŽ Culture Information Days for chamber germination, Daylength & PGR response
Materials & Methods • Varieties: - Blueberry Swirl - Blue Skies - Golden Yellow - Morpho - Purple NOTE: PGR recommendations are only guidelines. It is the responsibility of the applicator to read and follow all the current label directions for the specific chemical being used, in accordance with all regulations.
• Sow Week 28 (July 7th) • Plug tray size: 288 • Germination conditions: 18⁰C/Light, cover with vermiculite • Move Out of Germination Chamber (OGC): 2, 3 and 4 days • Plug PGR: daminozide (Alar) 2500/ chlormequat chloride (CCC) 500ppm spray at day 14 • Transplant W33 (August 12th) • Container size: 13 cm (1L) pot
Optimal Germination Chamber Days Golden Yellow OGC 2 vs. 3 vs. 4 days (L to R)
Morpho OGC 2 vs. 3 vs. 4 days (L to R)
• Different days OGC* did not have much impact on germination and yield potential (all over 94%). • However, seedlings were less uniform OGC 2 days. • Hypocotyl was slightly stretched OGC 4 days. • Overall, the best OGC time is 3 days for Cool Wave. * Move Out of Germination Chamber

Summary on Photoperiod Response • Pansy Cool Wave is a quantitative Long Day plant. • Generally, plants take about 2-4 days longer when grown under Short Day than Long Day conditions.

Cool Wave PGR response • Blue Skies is the most vigorous variety among the test varieties. It may need slightly higher rate or more frequency of daminozide/chlormequat chloride tank mix application. • Blueberry Swirl, Morpho, Purple are less vigorous than Blue Skies, but slightly more or equal in vigour to Golden Yellow. • All of them can be treated with paclobutrazol drench at 0.125 ppm when soil is 90% covered during warm conditions (ADT > 21⁰C). • Paclobutrazol 5 ppm spray (not shown in the photos) produced similar control as daminozide 2500 ppm and chlormequat chloride 500 ppm.
