Budget Budget For For Your Your Wedding Wedding

T 1

here is no doubt about it. Weddings are always going to be a major expense. Given the current economic environment it is smart to explore tips to assist in reducing some of the costs. It helps to make some decisions upfront about your priorities and budget because this approach will make the process easier.

Guest List

The first place to attack costs is by taking a hard look at your numbers. I suggest you use the quality of your relationships as the acid test in keeping your numbers manageable . If you haven't spoken to uncle John in 10 years, chances are you can do without him at your wedding. Just because you went to school some time ago with someone is no reason to automatically place them on that list. Do you want to have that person in your future life? A wedding is a special event and a place on that list should be reserved for those who qualify. Build the list up in this manner. It is easier to build up than to randomly create a list of who you know and then have the stress of trying to trim it.

6

2

Honeymoon

Does the honeymoon really have to be a trip to Paris? Quality alone time is important to start your wedded life for sure but it would cost much less if you chose to spend time at Bathsheba as opposed to Rome. Maybe the trip to Rome can be an anniversary treat.

Look at the various segments of the wedding; food, beverages, decor, photography etc. set priorities for which are really important to you, once you do that the choice of vendors and that segment's budget should reflect how much each activity means to you. If the decor is important perhaps you can spend more there and have a simple menu minus the shrimp or roast rack of lamb.

3

Prioritize

The timeline of your wedding can have an impact on your costs. A breakfast wedding will cost less. Remember to start early enough to avoid running into the heat of the early afternoon. Also, you can skip the canapĂŠs if you ensure that you feed your guests as soon as they sit for the reception. Make sure your photographer understands that he can't shoot for two hours because you have to consider your hungry guests. This timeline has another benefit. Doing the speeches after dinner endures that your food has time to settle before the dancing starts.

4

Wedding Timeline

Recall also that there are ways to defer costs. Book the package you really want for your photography but come to an arrangement with your photographer to pay for a smaller package now and then collect the other must have images on your first anniversary when you can afford to pay for them. Explore ways to cut costs with your wedding vendors. If you have the cash flow available many will give you a discount if you pay your bill in full in advance. Of course, we recommend that you book your wedding services with Pangroove Elegant Events where Affordable Elegance is our motto.

Fit for a Wedding

By Natalie Webb

S

o he’s “popped” the question and you are SUPER excited!!!!! It is no surprise that one of the first things most Brides To Be think about is….. YIP you guessed it, THE DRESS!!!! They all envision how they want to look in that dream dress. For most brides, the goal is to tighten, tone and trim the fat (with the aim of losing anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds), according to fitness experts in pre-wedding workouts. Given the popularity of strapless wedding gowns, brides generally want to focus on the arms, backs and shoulders.

You should keep your expectations in check. A good rule of thumb is that you can lose between 1 – 2lbs per week. If your wedding is only two months away, don't fool yourself and cause unnecessary stress by vowing to lose 40 pounds. This could set you up for failure and probably lead to complete abandonment of your weight-loss efforts. Remember too that fitness is a great lifestyle and perhaps you should not only see it as a wedding day goal but as a new part of your lifestyle.

An added bonus is getting your other half to join you in your quest for fitness leading to your big day. Of course this could also lead to benefits in the bedroom. :) 8

1

. Set goals that are realistic and specific. Determine the true timeline you are working with and accept the realistic weight loss you can expect to achieve. Having a set time period as your goal will help you stick to a new fitness regime. What better goal than to fit into your dress on the wedding day? You should write down your plan of action for every day, week, etc. coming up to your wedding. Make sure it is something you can measure and not just the end goal, but the milestones along the way. Start with a plan that you think you can accomplish or exceed. (Walking for 30 minutes at a time. Then running for 20 minutes and see how many times you have to stop and walk each time. Eventually work up to running for 30 minutes and so on.)

2

. Figure out what your barriers to exercise and eating well are, and make a plan to conquer and avoid those specific barriers. Take each barrier or excuse and write down ways you can solve the problem. For example if finding time to workout prevents you from exercising you may want to start your day with exercise. This way you get it out of the way before your hectic day starts. Starting your day with exercise will also energize you, this way you are ready for the day ahead. 9

3

. Find a Workout Plan: Finding a workout plan to help you achieve your goals can sometimes seem overwhelming. Engaging the services of a Personal Trainer won’t be such a bad idea. A Personal Trainer will keep you on track to achieving your goal as well as to help keep you motivated. You only have one chance to get it right for your Wedding Day so why not employ the services of someone who has experience. A few things to keep in mind however would be:

i. Your desired dress style: length, shape, and fabric. ii. Your body's assets iii. Your trouble spots 10

4

. YES, You need to keep eating! It is a common myth that if you want to loose weight you should starve yourself. Not eating enough can actually sabotage your weight-loss efforts just as much as overeating can. When you don't eat enough, your body begins holding on to all the calories you consume and turns them into fat. So, even if you loose weight on a starvation diet you won't look good because the lack of nutrition will diminish your muscle mass while increasing your fat storage! You should also consider the type of calories you consume. *TIP: If you just can't find the time to cook, head to the Supermarket and pick up frozen food meals that aren't drenched with chemicals and preservatives. It also wouldn’t hurt to buy some healthy snacks that are portable for taking with you on-the-go.

5

. Tracking your Progress: Keep track by recording your goals in a journal. Having your goals in writing is a fantastic motivator. The key is to keep them small and specific. Of course reward your self when you have done well, and NO, ice cream is not a good idea for a reward. :) Go Work Up a Sweat!

Celebration Bride

Do It Yourself ??? Some of our clients opt to go the route of Do It Yourself. They book only the things that they cannot find a way to provide for themselves. We understand this and the many underlying reasons for taking this approach. Sometimes though, the process can be overwhelming even for those who have studied event planning. Here we present the unedited thoughts of one such bride, written when asked about her experience in planning and executing her wedding.

“ The pride and joy one feels on the day after planning your own wedding is immeasurable. To sit at your head table and see people enjoying and admiring your hard work is a feeling I will remember for a lifetime. However, it is not all the glitz and glamour you may think. Planning a wedding is extremely hard work and it takes months of constant thinking and planning, lots of creativity and most importantly, a great team. One of the biggest challenges is being able to explain in detail, the concepts and ideas in your mind to the person who takes up your job on the big day. You simply cannot be the Bride or Groom and the Wedding Planner on the day of the wedding. The person you choose has to be able to execute your wishes as close to perfect as possible. He/ she also has to be someone you trust.

“…a wedding is extremely hard work and it takes months of constant thinking and planning…”

12

CelebrationCelebration Bride 25 Bride

However, while it is good to be able to plan your own wedding, I would advise any couple to hire a wedding planner. Unless you have some kind of background in event management or wedding planning, its best you let a professional handle the job. There are quite a few aspects of planning a wedding that one may not know or even think about. For example, there is a right and wrong way of preparing invitations, a time frame that is acceptable for their delivery and the coordinating of color schemes and decor. There are many different aspects of the wedding that you have to think about, with the biggest being food and beverage. You have to know if you want dinner or hors d'oeuvres, simple or exotic, a wide range of alcoholic beverages or a basic bar and of course this all depends on your budget. In addition, there is the DJ, the MC, location, photographers and videographers, make up artists just to name a few. For me it was challenging but I managed to produce a great wedding due to my experience and background in event management. There were a few hiccups and a few things didn't go according to my plan but with the help of a great team it came off unnoticed to the guests. My final set of advice to couples is perhaps a bit harsh but it is reality. Forget promises and offers from friends and family and go the professional route and hire a reputable company, whether it is caterers, planners, bakers or designers. This will save you a lot of stress, disappointments and unnecessary pressure of having someone cancel on you the very last minute.

or this edition’s featured weddings we have looked back through our work to two destination weddings and one local couple who chose a hotel to say their I Do.

Why do we feature a wedding? It gives us an opportunity to show a complete wedding coming together as opposed to just a centerpiece or head table. We try to give a sense of what it was like to be at that wedding as the first guest to enter the space. The initial impact is key. Will we feature your wedding? You never know‌ Make yours an Elegant Event and maybe we will feature your wedding on these pages.

Lulu and Tariq 6th June 2013 Stanford House

36

The destination wedding of Lulu & Tariq was unusual for us for two reasons - we were approached to help plan their wedding when they had already decided upon and booked their venue, Stanford house, a lovely villa on Polo Ridge, and secondly the couple did not want to go with the traditional wedding on the beach but wanted the grounds of the villa and the panoramic view of the sea as the canvas for their Barbados dream wedding.

37

38

Being resident in Canada, the couple had no contacts in Barbados and hence required us to provide them with a complete suite of services including hair and makeup, wedding decor, photography, music and catering, as well as assisting them with pulling the whole thing together on the day.

39

The venue itself was stunning and hence required little by way of decor on

This unique and picturesque Gazebo was the focal point of the wedding ceremony. Its grand presence required no embellishments or additional decorating and the weather co-operated to give the lovely couple the perfect sunset shots.

Lulu and Tariq trusted us completely with their event with decisions of their menu and various details for the wedding. It was a small intimate event with immediate family and friends and hence the entire ceremony, couple and guests fit nicely into the gazebo area. The final result was a very dramatic yet simple destination wedding with a very happily wedded couple. 46

Shamayne and JonPierre 13th May 2012 Daphne's Restaurant

T

he marriage of Shamayne and Jon Pierre was also a destination wedding but this time the groom had local ties to Barbados. After exploring several venues this couple opted to go with the upscale restaurant Daphne's on the west coast of Barbados. In order to ensure privacy the couple booked out the entire restaurant and hence we were able to light and decorate the venue completely. The ceremony was held just outside on the beach as the sun set. After completing the cocktails on the beach the wedding moved indoors for the candle light reception, before returning outdoors again to dance under the evening stars. As with many of our destination brides we provided esthetics services, hair and make up as well as decor and lighting. The decor featured plum table overlays and center pieces of submersed mini calla Lillie's, floating candles and accents of silver.

Lena & Kale

O

ur final featured for this edition is the wedding of Lena an a local couple who opted to use Turtle Beach Resort on the south coast their nuptials. This made sense as they had arranged for their overseas g to stay there. The ceremony backed the Caribbean Sea and made use of t wooden gazebo in the hotel's beach gardens. Luckily the bride planned wedding timeline well, allowing for a buffer, thus the showers that did did not impact negatively on her big day. The reception featured a vibrant orange contrasted with silver and this scheme worked well in the beach restaurant also at the Turtle Beach Re As you will see, the decor featured lots of fabric draping for the backdr ceiling and the columns as well as ambient lighting. The center pieces w merged full sized calla Lilies with babies breath in cylindrical vases wh were lit from beneath, all placed on silver table overlays. Colour For Your W 66

Wedding

There are perhaps thousands of articles written on the subject of weddings and the use of colour therein. The problem for us in Barbados and other non temperate climates lies in the fact that they are often written for and by those in northern climates, where seasonality has a major impact on life. Thus we are advised on spring and fall colours and concepts, we even bought into the whole idea of June weddings, based again on a northern reality, a reality based on their weather patterns. We are bombarded with images of roses and calla lilies for everything from invitations to bouquets. We have ice sculptures as event centerpieces...the examples are endless. Those things bear no resemblance to our every day existence but we import them literally and figuratively into our weddings. Anyone who has travelled north would know that roses are abundant and cheap there, but we pay top dollar in the Caribbean to buy their concepts and products when beauty lies all around us.

67

Colour Inspirations Scholars would have plenty of theories to explain our fascination with things northern but this is not the place for that. How then should we in the Caribbean view the issue of colour in weddings? What follows is practical guide for those of us in the sun so unshackle your mind and jump right in. Always remember though that colour should always be more about personal choice and taste than about anything written anywhere, including here! To my mind, in the same way that those in northern climates mimic their reality for colour inspiration so should we.

Caribbean Inspiration Thus, instead of seasons we could celebrate the shades of blues of our waters. The coral and pinks of our sandy beaches in Barbados... The greens of our fields of sugar cane, maybe accented with the golden hues of the arrows in full flight. Bougainvillea in full bloom, in its various colours, presents an unforgettable display that we should treasure and own. What about the hibiscus or the Joseph's coat. In the tropical flowers shown here you can see how nature uses shades and repetition of shapes and how lines are used to draw the eye to the center. 68

These ought to be our inspiration because they are our reality. A quick look into your garden would unlock an inspiring array of colour schemes and themes as well as textures for your wedding decor. Pick a few flowers and closely examine them, go into the pasture and pick some wild flowers. You will quickly notice that nature thrives on contrasting colour and on repetition of patterns.

A closer however look will show that often subtle variations of a single colour can be quite impactful. These are powerful concepts in the decorator’s tool kit. Use them wisely for maximum effect.

69

Are your Colors Warm or Cold??? Warm

Cold

With that in mind, the central issue should really be about a colour scheme for the entire event and not just a random selection of colours. The subtle but important difference being that a colour scheme is a selection that work well together, either in contrast or harmony. In achieving this, consideration should be given to colour temperature, i.e. Are the colours warm or cold? (Blues, purple etc are considered to be cold whereas orange red etc are considered to be warm. Colours like yellow can fit info either category and as such can be considered to be pivotal. )

Tones and Textures Another useful issue to take into consideration is the tone or texture of the fabrics being used. Generally fabrics of similar tone or texture work better together as they blend more easily. An earthy cotton fabric cannot easily be switched with a glossy satin of the same colour even if they are the same shade. This issue is more important the closer the colours or fabrics are going to be in relation to each other. So you may have two or three colours that work great together but if you change one of the fabrics then the colour is not rendered in the same way. This can have unintended consequences.

70

Skin Tones Brides, (and I address you directly since he is not the one reading this article nor will he have a say in the choice of colours (smile)), if you know that you are a dark African queen wearing a lily white dress, please spare a thought for your photographer before you step into the 3 o’clock sun. As beautiful as you might be, you have just given your photographer a headache. The same applies to dark grooms in black and white tuxedo outfits next to a bride in a sparkling white dress. Without getting too technical, while the human eye can adjust to make sense of this extreme contrast the camera lens will not and your photographer will have to choose between you or your outfit. This is of particular importance if you are planning an outdoor affair for your ceremony.

Its His Wedding Too It would be remiss of me not to draw attention to the difference in the genders when the issue of colour in weddings raises its delicate self. First of all, most men don’t care. Secondly, their perception of colour is severely limited normally to primary colours. No, I am not saying that all men are colour blind, we typically just don’t register the nuances of colour or revel in the various shades in the same way that the bride will. Ladies... get accustomed to the idea...he is just not that into colour. If you want him to relate then perhaps you should discuss West Indies maroon, (make that purple), Chelsea royal blue or that shade of yellow in the logo of Manchester United. Perhaps brides should consider these more masculine colours incorporated into the wedding as one way of letting men into the wedding process, a process which by and large alienates them to the sidelines as mere observers who’s only role is to say ‘I do!” 71

Colours you can not change at the venue Another often overlooked issue that ought to be considered is the colours at the venue ( indoors or outdoors) which cannot be changed. If the venue is outdoors then chances are that greens are an integral part of your colour palate for the space and this should be taken into account as you choose your colour scheme. In addition, the colours of any flowers that proliferate in the garden should not be ignored. When a broad view is taken of your event, ceremony or reception, your colour scheme should not clash with your garden venue. Bear in mind that contrast and clashes are quite different concepts. Likewise if the carpet at your indoor venue is blue and the walls green, ignoring these details will not be wise, particularly if you are planning for a warm palate of shades of orange. The venue colours will impact on the overall look of the event and by virtue of their size they will make their presence felt. Of course some couples could not care less about this level of detail while others will be running for the exits. It is, as I have already suggested, largely a matter of taste and one’s style (or lack thereof. :) )

The larger point here is that this is not something that should become an issue when you start to decorate and find yourself overwhelmed by an unwanted or uninvited colour. When you chose the venue you invite that colour into your wedding space. Let it be a conscious choice and not an oversight. 72

Aspects of your Venue that can not be changed will influence your final look...

As you can see, this concept of Black and White combined with feathers and silver accents would have made a bigger and more effective statement in a white room. Had the colors and patterns of the room been taken into consideration this client might have chosen a different colour or concept. Below you see a much more harmonious outcome because it works with the room.

Same room different colour schemes different effect

73

A White Canvas To Start With the above issues above in mind many decorators, among them the noted Preston Bailey and Colin Cowie, prefer to work in a tented space for the simple fact that you are presented with a completely blank white palate upon which you can start to express yourself. This gives you maximum flexibility in the creative process. In addition, with the advent of ruffled or smooth tent liners and leggings your wedding tent is transformed into an elegant and softly draped space ready for the creation of your master piece regardless of your col-

our scheme. ( In the interest of full disclosure I should point out that the author of this article owns a tent rental business but the facts are the facts! ) The final issue I would like to discuss is a pet peeve of mine. I should point out also that there are opposing camps. For me, people and what they wear need not be the same as what is put on furniture! This is perhaps the most critical application of the concept of a colour scheme. You do not need for the bridal party to disappear as they enter the reception space because they are dressed in the exact colour as the tables! By the same token it is best that there is not a war of colour. The happy marriage to me is a colour scheme expressed across the range of colour choices for the event, where there is then harmony in the entire space. Harmony of concept and hence harmony of spirit 74
