Annual Report Summary 2016-17 | Artefact Art Gallery

Vision With our extensive experience and range of exhibitions, public programs and services, Artefact Art Gallery are able to offer our visitors high quality, on time and high-performance experience. The vision we have developed is an ambitious one as we are dedicated to serving the widest possible audience as a centre of excellence for the collection, preservation, documentation, interpretation and display of Australian and International art, and a forum for art education and the exchange of ideas.

Mission Our goal for the gallery is that by the time of our 15th anniversary in 2018 will be recognised both nationally and internationally for the quality of our collection, our facilities and our professional staff. It is vital the gallery continues to build on our reputation as having quality collections and exhibitions of Australian and International modern and contemporary art. Over the next two years we will be planning for the future including stakeholder consultation, an architectural brief that will lead to a national competition and working closely with our partners to bring the public new and exciting exhibitions.

Exhibitions Access was provided to the collection through our permanent displays and various exhibition programs, supported by a range of public programs and events. There were many highlights in the past year among them our travelling exhibition Shadowfile, featuring emerging young Australian artists. The exhibition completed its national tour, taking in Artefacts Gallery & Sculpture Park in Victoria, the Grograin Gallery in Brisbane and the Gestalt Museum of Art in South Australia. The gallery was delighted to work in partnership with Auslink on the exhibition which commenced its tour in Asia at the beginning of the year before featuring at Artefact Art Gallery. Made in Melbourne, paintings and photographs from the Nellie Lester Foundation proved to be very popular, shining a light on Melbourne studio portraiture. Artefact Art Gallery was the exclusive Australian venue for this exhibition, which was organised by the Getty Museum of Art, California. Acme International Collections enabled the gallery to showcase two highly significant collections, and we thank Tourism Victoria for their support.

Highlights The gallery’s previous attendance record was broken for Ultra Modern from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The exhibition traced the history of modern art from early 20th century to present day and was complemented by an Australian component. This exhibition completed the record-breaking performance and market endorsements of our business strategies. Other highlights included a number of guest speaker events, with local, national and international guests presenting on their areas of expertise. Other highlights included a major film event at Federation Square, family activity days, children’s events, holiday workshops, twilight sessions, social events and behind the scenes tours with curatorial staff and selected guides.

Publications Artefact Art Gallery published 3 titles this year all in association with exhibitions and published with the support of our partner and sponsor SystemX. Digital engagement opportunities continue to evolve across the gallery in line with our aim to extend audience encounters with our permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. We have increased production of digital content to communicate with new and existing audiences via our website and other social media. A range of resources for children and the education sector including education kits and collection notes were published in print and online in association with exhibitions.

Acquisitions and Loans Artefact presentation of contemporary art was transformed during the year thanks to philanthropist and arts patron Dame Elizabeth Bentley who announced her intention to bequeath to the gallery her collection of contemporary paintings. The gallery’s collection has never held anything comparable in the range and quality of this collection. Key items from the prestigious collection are now on display in the ArtsStudio located in Melbourne. Artefact Art Gallery made a major addition to the permanent collection during the year thanks to the generous support of Vintage Wines. The work soon to be housed in the forecourt. Further highly significant works were also added to the collections through the Collection Circle acquisition program. Again this year many galleries and private collectors loaned valuable artworks for exhibitions and Artefact Art Gallery thank them for their generous help and support. A number of collaborative ventures with other museums, curators, publishers and international colleagues were notable amongst the exhibitions presented in 2016.

Public Programs Floor talks are a core program, accompanying every exhibition and often featuring works in the gallery’s collection. A particularly successful series this year, the artists’ talks in association with our blockbuster exhibitions. As part of an increased effort to offer hands-on experiences, workshops ranged from beginners to master classes with established artists. 572 visitors attended an adult workshop this year. The Film Program presented a film series in conjunction with three of our major exhibitions. And again this year our Access programs provide opportunities for a diverse range of people with a disability or disadvantaged community organisations to actively engage and connect with art at the gallery. Access programs are delivered in a structured and flexible approach and respond to specific needs of various groups.

work was organisational restructure across some areas of our operations. Artefact Art Gallery is now in a better state to meet future challenges in a tough financial climate.

Looking Forward 2017/18 is expected to be similar in terms of attendance numbers to the gallery. The exhibition program is impacted with the Henry Caldor exhibition to be held in January 2018, hence, the general visitation is expected to be greater than this year. This should have a positive impact on the gallery’s capacity to generate a very strong revenue from its commercial business.
