The first volume in a new six-part history of England from acclaimed author Peter Ackroyd Having written enthralling biographies of London and of its great river, the Thames, Peter Ackroyd now turns to England itself. This first volume of six takes us from the time that England was first settled, more than 15,000 years ago, to the death in 1509 of the first Tudor monarch, Henry VII. In it, Ackroyd takes us from Neolithic England, which we can only see in the most tantalising glimpses – a stirrup found in a grave, some seeds at the bottom of a bowl – to the long period of Roman rule; from the Dark Ages when England was invaded by a ceaseless tide of Angles, Saxons and Jutes, to the twin glories of medieval England – its great churches and monasteries and its common law. With his extraordinary skill for evoking time and place, he tells the familiar story of king succeeding king in rich prose, with profound insight and some surprising details. The food we ate, the clothes we wore, the punishments we endured, even the jokes we told are all found here, too.

A critically acclaimed new account of Churchill’s lifelong involvement with the British Empire ‘I have not become the King’s First Minister in order to preside over the liquidation of the British Empire’. These notorious words, spoken by Churchill in 1942, encapsulate his image as an imperial diehard, implacably opposed to colonial freedom – a reputation that has prevailed, and which Churchill willingly embraced to further his policies. Yet, as a youthful minister at the Colonial Office before World War I, his political opponents had seen him as a Little Englander and a danger to the Empire. Placing Churchill in the context of his times and his contemporaries, Richard Toye evaluates his position on key Imperial questions and examines what was conventional about Churchill’s opinions and what was unique. Combining a lightness of touch and entertaining storytelling with expert and insightful analysis, the result is a vivid and dynamic account of a remarkable man and an extraordinary era. ‘Wonderfully informative’–Daily Telegraph ‘Excellent’–Spectator ‘Mature, intelligent, thoughtful, judicious’–Washington Times ‘One of Britain’s smartest young historians’–Independent

The best-selling author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat describes how we experience the visual world ‘Oliver Sacks is a perfect antidote to the anaesthetic of familiarity. His writing turns brains and minds transparent’–Observer In The Mind’s Eye, Oliver Sacks tells the stories of people who are able to navigate the world and communicate with others despite losing what many of us consider indispensable senses and abilities: the capacity to recognize faces, the sense of three-dimensional space, the ability to read, the sense of sight. For all of these people, the challenge is to adapt to a radically new way of being in the world – and The Mind’s Eye is testament to the myriad ways that we, as humans, are capable of rising to this challenge. As such, it’s testament, too, to the human power of creativity and adaptation. ‘Sacks shows in this book, that no matter how erudite, brilliant, fit or philosophical we may be, the darkness is never far away’ –TimeOut ‘The Mind’s Eye is about the possibility of recovery and the inexorable decline of the ageing individual. From this collision of incompatible truths, tragedy is made . . . making this Sacks's most powerful book to date’–Sunday Telegraph Oliver Sacks is a physician and the author of ten previous books, including The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Awakenings (which inspired the Oscar-nominated film) and Musicophilia. THE MIND OF THE MARKET Michael Shermer ISBN: 9780805089165 Category: Business and Psychology Extent: 336 pp Format: Trade Paperback Price: `250
How did we make the leap from ancient huntergatherers to modern consumers, and why do people get so emotional about financial decisions? The national best–seller, The Mind of the Market, uncovers the evolutionary roots of our economic behaviour. Drawing on the new field of neuroeconomics, psychologist Michael Shermer investigates what brain scans reveal about bargaining, snap purchases, and establishing trust in business. He scrutinizes experiments in behavioural economics to understand why people hang on to losing stocks and why negotiations disintegrate into tit-for-tat disputes. He brings together findings from psychology and biology to describe how our tribal ancestry makes us suckers for brands, why researchers believe cooperation feels (biochemically) like sex, and how even capuchin monkeys get indignant if they don’t get a fair reward for their work. Entertaining and eye-opening, The Mind of the Market explains the real science of economics. Michael Shermer is the author of nine previous books, including the best–selling Why People Believe Weird Things. He is a columnist for Scientific American, the publisher of Skeptic magazine, and the founder and director of the international Skeptics Society. He lives in Southern California.

WHITE HOUSE DIARY Jimmy Carter ISBN: 9780312577193 Category: Memoir Extent: 624 pp Format: Trade Paperback Price: `650
Each day during his presidency, Jimmy Carter made several entries in a private diary, recording his thoughts, impressions, delights, and frustrations. He offered unvarnished assessments of cabinet members, congressmen, and foreign leaders; he narrated the progress of secret negotiations such as those that led to the Camp David Accords. When his four-year term came to an end in early 1981, the diary amounted to more than five thousand pages. But this extraordinary document has never been made public—until now. By carefully selecting the most illuminating and relevant entries, Carter has provided us with an astonishingly intimate view of his presidency. Day by day, we see his forceful advocacy for nuclear containment, sustainable energy, human rights, and peace in the Middle East. We witness his interactions with such complex personalities as Ted Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, Joe Biden, Anwar Sadat, and Menachem Begin. We get the inside story of his socalled “malaise speech,” his bruising battle for the 1980 Democratic nomination, and the Iranian hostage crisis. Remarkably, we also get Carter’s retrospective comments on these topics and more: thirty years after the fact, he has annotated the diary with his candid reflections on the people and events that shaped his presidency, and on the many lessons learned. Carter is now widely seen as one of the truly wise men of our time. Offering an unprecedented look at both the man and his tenure, this fascinating book will stand as a unique contribution to the history of the American presidency.

One of the great yoga figures of our time, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West more than thirty years ago. Based on flowing, energetic movement coordinated with the breath, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it have become the most widespread and influential styles of practiced today. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois studied for twenty-five years with T. Krishnamacharya, and passed his knowledge on to generations of students around the world. He taught at the Sanskrit College in Mysore from 1937 to 1973, and founded the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (now the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute), which he ran from 1948 until 2008. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 93. Written almost two millennia ago, Patanjali’s work focuses on how to attain the direct experience and realization of the purusa: the innermost individual self, or soul. As the classical treatise on the Hindu understanding of mind and consciousness and on the technique of meditation, it has exerted immense influence over the religious practices of Hinduism in India and, more recently, in the west. Edwin Bryant studied at Manchester University and University of London and received his Ph.D from Columbia University. He has taught in the Religion departments at Harvard University and Columbia University, and since 2001 has been Assistant Professor of Religion at Rutgers University. Bryant has written numerous scholarly articles and reviews and written, edited, or translated six previous books, including a translation of the 4000 verses of the 10th book of the Bhagavata Purana called Krishna: the Beautiful Legend of God, and published by Penguin Classics.
The Bhagavad Gita, a small section of the massive Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata, is one of the central texts of Indian culture and philosophy, and one of the great works of world literature. It has been translated into English many times since 1785, and has had a profound influence in America beginning with the Transcendentalists up to today, where it is taught in introductory world literature, religion, and Eastern religion courses, and is often prescribed in yoga teacher training courses because it explains the core principles of Vedic philosophy, which are central to yoga practice. Thompson emphasizes the social, historical, literary and philosophical contexts surrounding the text. His introduction explains the development of Hindu thought and where the philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita fits historically, provides a history of the text and its place in Indian literature and philosophy and history. Ideal for students in many fields, this edition also contains a note on translation, footnotes, a glossary of terms.

And she hopes one day even to go to school, or to have her cleft lip fixed. Zulaikha knows that all will be provided for her, Inshallah –God willing. Then she meets Meena, who offers to teach her the Afghan poetry she taught her late mother. And the Americans come to the village, promising not just new opportunities, but surgery to fix Zulaikha's face. These could mean a whole new life - but can Zulaikha dare to hope they will come true? Trent Reedy’s breathtaking first novel, based on his experiences serving with the US Army in Afghanistan, shows astonishing insight into the different cultural attitudes of the traditional people and their peacekeepers, and, in a land where hidebound traditions clash with an emerging desire for freedom, offers humanity and hope. TRENT REEDY grew up in Iowa and has always loved telling stories. He majored in English at the University of Iowa and paid for his course by joining the Iowa Army National Guard. Called up to serve in Afghanistan in 2004, he experienced bad feelings both about the war and leaving his wife and home. One of the children he encountered in Afghanistan was a young girl named Zulaikha, who had suffered since birth from a cleft lip. A U.S. army doctor gave her corrective surgery, and Trent was inspired by Zulaikha's quiet courage and dignity. The last time he saw her, he promised that he would tell her story. Returning to Iowa in 2005, he taught English before taking a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He now lives with his wife and dog Wiggles in Washington State, where he is hard at work on his second book.
