THE STORY OF A WIDOW
BC
et T Jack
‘One day when she looked at the portrait, she considered how blessed she had been in life. She contemplated her good fortune in finding an upright man like Akbar Ahmad as her life partner and felt grateful for his bounteous legacy, which released her from all financial cares. Akbar Ahmad looked back at her, his face cast in an expression of long suffering. Mona’s eyes welled up with tears.’–from The Story of a Widow
After the death of her husband Akbar Ahmad, Mona finds herself settling ambivalently into a new life. But the calm rhythm of her days–gardening, cooking, time with her neighbours and family in ISBN: 9781447212034 Karachi–is upset by the appearance of Salamat Ali, the new tenant in her friend Mrs. Baig’s house. Imprint: Picador Vivacious, friendly, and at times almost impertinent, Category: Literary Fiction Salamat Ali is both a breath of fresh air and a Extent: 320pp disconcerting new presence in Mona’s life, and their Format: Trade Paperback awkward meetings always seem to end in Price: `299 embarrassment or misunderstanding. When Salamat Ali, encouraged by Mrs. Baig, presents Mona with a marriage proposal, she is forced to consider what kind of future she wishes to make for herself–and what her past with Akbar Ahmad really means . . . The Story of a Widow is a beautifully observant novel, one that pays careful attention to the delicate movements of the heart in romantic and family life. But it is equally concerned with the mores of a society in which traditional roles both support and constrain men and–particularly–women. Gently humorous and profoundly perceptive, The Story of a Widow is the moving tale of a woman’s discovery of her voice, and herself. Musharraf ali farooqi is an author, novelist and translator. He was born in 1968 in Hyderabad, Pakistan, and now divides his time between Toronto, New York and Karachi. His novel The Story of a Widow (Knopf Canada/Picador India) has been shortlisted for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2010, and longlisted for the 2010 IMPAC-Dublin Literary Award.

When the Tooting family find a vast abandoned engine and fit it to their camper van, they have no idea of the adventure that lies ahead. The engine used to belong to an extraordinary flying car–and it wants to be back on the road again . . . fast! The Tootings can haul on the steering wheel and pull the handbrake as hard as they like, but their camper van now has a mind of her own. It’s not long before they’re hurtling along on a turbocharged chase as Chitty tracks down her long-lost bodywork. But there are sinister forces at work too. When it comes to a car as special as Chitty, everybody wants a piece of her . . .
Almost fifty years ago, Ian Fleming, author of James Bond, wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as a bedtime story for his son, Caspar. He was inspired by a real car –one hand–built by the eccentric Count Zborowski to break the 1921 world land-speed record. Filling Chitty’s tank with his trademark wit, warmth and sense of story, Frank Cottrell Boyce jumps into the driving seat and takes Chitty into the twenty-first century. He is the award-winning author of Millions, Framed and Cosmic. He is also a successful writer of film scripts and, along with Danny Boyle, is writing the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Olympics. Joe Berger is a prize-winning illustrator and animator. He has been selected as one of the 2011 winners of Booktrust’s Best New Illustrators Award.
