Songs of Innocence and of Experience

AH

William Blake

V. S. A beautiful colour illustrated edition of William Blake’s most famous poems, with a foreword by Peter Harness. William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience includes some of the visionary poet’s finest and best-loved poems such as ‘The Lamb’, ‘The Chimney-Sweeper’ and ‘The Tiger’. Blake’s work is instantly recognizable by its flamboyance and inventiveness. This gorgeous edition contains stunning reproductions of the fifty-four plates of the poems and illustrations together, which Blake etched himself and coloured by hand. Each has the poem printed on the facing page. Whilst Songs of Innocence captures the innocence of childhood, Songs of Experience is its contrary sequel. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library, a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold-foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover.

William Blake was born in London in 1757. He was apprenticed to a master engraver and then studied at the Royal Academy under the guidance of Joshua Reynolds. In 1789 he engraved and published Songs of Innocence and the contrasting Songs of Experience came later in 1794. A poet, painter and printmaker of great originality and imagination, his work was largely unrecognized during his lifetime and he struggled to make a living. Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. He died in 1827.

In a Free State

The

V. S. Naipaul

V. S. Winner of the Booker Prize in 1971 and nominated for the Golden Man Booker Prize in 2018. V. S. Naipaul’s Booker Prize-winning novel about displacement, the yearning for the good place in someone else’s land and the attendant heartache.

‘A book of such lucid complexity and such genuine insight, so deft and deep, that it somehow manages to agitate, charm, amuse and excuse the reader all at the same pitch of experience’ Dennis Potter, The Times ‘Naipaul’s travel writing is perhaps the most important body of work of its kind in the second half of the century’ Martin Amis

In a Free State first tells the story of an Indian servant in Washington, who becomes an American citizen but feels he has ceased to be a part of the flow. Then of a disturbed Asian West Indian in London who, in jail for murder, has never really known where he is. Then the central novel moves to Africa, to a fictional country somewhere like Uganda or Rwanda. The novel’s central characters once found Africa liberating, but now it has gone sour on them. The land is no longer safe, and at a time of tribal conflict they have to make the long drive to the safety of their compound. At the end of this drive – the narrative tight, wonderfully constructed, the formal and precise language always instilled with violence and rage – we know everything about the English characters, the African country and the Idi Amin-like future awaiting it. This is one of V. S. Naipaul’s greatest novels, hard but full of pity. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library, a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold-foiled edges and ribbon markers. The Enigma of Arrival V. S. Naipaul From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature comes a multicultural tale of finding your place in the world.

Taking its title from the strangely frozen picture by the surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico, The Enigma of Arrival tells the story of a young Indian from the Caribbean arriving in post-imperial England and consciously, over many years, finding himself as a writer.

‘Written with the expected beauty of style . . . As eloquently as anyone now writing, Naipaul remembers’ Time ‘A wonderful book . . . a magical book’ Independent

The Enigma of Arrival is the story of a journey, from one place to another, from the British colony of Trinidad to the ancient countryside of England, and from one state of mind to another, and is perhaps V. S. Naipaul’s most autobiographical work. Alongside this he weaves a rich and complex web of invention and observation. Finding depth and pathos in the smallest moments – the death of a cottager, the firing of an estate’s gardener – Naipaul also comprehends the bigger picture, watching as the old world is lost to the gradual but permanent changes wrought on the English landscape by the march of ‘progress’. This is a moving and beautiful novel told with great dignity, compassion and candour. Confessions of an English Opium-Eater

In th

Thomas De Quincey

Anto Confessions of an English Opium-Eater is a powerful nineteenth-century autobiography tracing Thomas De Quincey’s journey of addiction, introduced by biographer, critic and academic Dr Frances Wilson. Explosive and unforgiving, Confessions of an English OpiumEater describes in searing detail the pleasure, pain and mindexpanding powers of opium. Thomas De Quincey takes us on a journey from his grammar school childhood to his homeless adolescence in Wales, from befriending prostitutes during his nocturnal wanderings in London to enrolling at Oxford University only to drop out when his drug use overcomes him. Thrust into a disorientating world of extreme euphoria and vivid nightmares, De Quincey’s life story is both unpredictable and deeply personal. Confessions of an English Opium-Eater is considered to be the first published autobiography to explore the lure and effects of addiction.

‘Among the best essayists of the Romantic era . . . De Quincey may be viewed as a proto-Burroughs, as well as a British cousin to Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Baudelaire’ Washington Post ‘Thomas De Quincey was the original cosmonaut of inner space, his Confessions of an English OpiumEater predating the wave of drug buddy literature from William Burroughs to Irvine Welsh by half a century or more’ Glasgow Herald ‘A stimulating cocktail: exotic dream sequences conjured up in baroque prose-poetry, camp Gothic effects worthy of Hammer Horror, classical quotations, London street-slang and sprawling footnotes on German philosophy’ Mail on Sunday ‘The first – and still the finest – literary dope fiend’ Guardian ‘It is one of the classics of nineteenthcentury life writing and its influence is still felt’ Observer

Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library, a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold-foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover.

Thomas De Quincey was born in Manchester in 1785. Highly intelligent but with a rebellious spirit, he was offered a place at Oxford University while still a student at Manchester Grammar School. But unwilling to complete his studies, he ran away and lived on the streets, first in Wales and then in London. Eventually he returned home and took up his place at Oxford, but quit before completing his degree. A friend of Coleridge and Wordsworth, he eventually settled in Grasmere in the Lake District and worked as a journalist. He first wrote about his opium experiences in essays for The London Magazine, and these were printed in book form in 1822. De Quincey died in 1859.

erful omas d s

A new selection of stories which highlights the breadth of Chekhov’s talent for short-story writing, selected and introduced by novelist Paul Bailey.

ummind-

Anton Chekhov was one of the world’s most accomplished short-story writers and this new collection displays the breadth and variety of his genius. Chekhov had an incomparable ability to write about the seemingly every day with insight, humour and compassion. His characters are brilliantly drawn, from the church warden who’s convinced his wife’s a witch because strangers arrive on the doorstep whenever there’s a storm, to the wronged wife who confronts her husband’s chorus-girl lover, to the melancholy school teacher who imagines how her life might have been.

Anton Chekhov was born in 1860 in Southern Russia and moved to Moscow to study medicine. Whilst at university he sold short stories and sketches to magazines to raise money to support his family. His success and acclaim grew as both a writer of fiction and of plays whilst he continued to practice medicine. Ill health forced him to move from his country estate near Moscow to Yalta where he wrote some of his most famous work, and it was there that he married actress Olga Knipper. He died from tuberculosis in 1904. Constance Garnett (1861–1946) was one of the first translators to bring English language translations of Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Chekhov to a wide readership.

In this imaginative extravaganza, Satan, disguised as a magician, descends upon Moscow in the 1930s with his riotous band, which includes a talking cat and an expert assassin. This visit has several aims, one of which concerns the fate of the Master, an author who has written a novel about Pontius Pilate and is now in a mental hospital. By turns satiric, fantastic and ironically philosophical, The Master and Margarita constantly surprises and entertains as the action switches back and forth between twentieth-century Moscow and first-century Jerusalem.

The Prince

Poe

Niccolò Machiavelli

Edite Machiavelli’s profound political essay from the sixteenth century, with an afterword by Oliver Francis. Niccolò Machiavelli provides a remarkably uncompromising picture of the true nature of power, no matter what era or by whom it is exercised. Drawing on examples from the ancient Greeks and Romans and from Machiavelli’s contemporaries, The Prince offers – some believed with satirical intent – advice on how a ruler should preserve his power, conduct and warfare, and maintain his reputation. Machiavelli not only influenced many of the great statesmen of his age, but was also one of the founding fathers of modern political thought. The Prince, written in 1513 and published in 1532, is one of the most famous pieces of writing of all time. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library, a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold-foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover.

‘Few books have attracted such an influential readership as The Prince’ Michael Arditti, Telegraph ‘Machiavelli was showing how to achieve power and hold on to it’ Lesley McDowell ‘At a time when pious drivel, feckless rhetoric and fatal arrogance too often rule the affairs of us all, a realist dollop of Machiavellianism might well be added to the cauldron of post-modern statecraft’ Ronald K. L. Collins, Washington Independent Review of Books

Niccolò Machiavelli was born on 3 May 1469 in Florence, during that city-state’s peak of greatness under the Medici family. In 1494, the year the Medici were exiled, Machiavelli entered Florentine public service. In 1498 he was appointed Chancellor and Secretary to the Second Chancery. Serving as diplomat for the republic, Machiavelli was an emissary to some of the most distinguished people of their age. When the Medici were returned to Florence in 1512, Machiavelli was forced into retirement. In the years that followed he devoted himself to literature, producing his most famous work, The Prince. In 1527 the Medici were again expelled from Florence, but before Machiavelli was able once more to secure political office in the city he died on 22 June 1527.

Poems on Nature Edited by Gaby Morgan This delightful collection of nature poems is introduced by author Helen Macdonald. The poems in Poems on Nature are divided into spring, summer, autumn and winter to reflect, in verse, the changes of the seasons and the passing of time. Since poetry began, there have been poems about nature; it’s a complex subject which has inspired some of the most beautiful poetry ever written. Poets from Andrew Marvell to W. B. Yeats to Emily Brontë have sought to describe the natural environment and our relationship with it. There is also a rich tradition of songs and rhymes, such as ‘Scarborough Fair’, that hark back to a rural way of life which may now be lost, but is brought back to life in the lyrical verses included in this collection. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library, a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold-foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover.

Helen Macdonald is a writer, poet, illustrator and naturalist, and an affiliated research scholar at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. She is the author of the bestselling H is for Hawk, as well as a cultural history of falcons, titled Falcon, and three collections of poetry, including Shaler’s Fish.
