JEFFREY ARCHER Halfway through writing the Clifton Chronicles, I came up with an idea for a new novel that was so dramatic in scope, that I felt if I could pull it off, it might just be the new Kane and Abel. With that in mind, I have, for the past two years, been working on my first stand-alone novel for a decade. The result is Heads You Win. The novel opens in Leningrad, Russia, 1968. Alexander Karpenko is no ordinary child, and from an early age, it is clear he is destined to lead his countrymen. But when his father is assassinated by the KGB for defying the state, he and his mother have to escape from Russia if they hope to survive. When they arrive at the docks, they are confronted with an irreversible choice: should they board a ship bound for America, or one sailing to Great Britain? Alexander leaves that choice to the toss of a coin . . .

In a single moment, a double twist will decide Alexander’s future. During a tale of fate and fortune, spanning two continents and thirty years, you will follow Alexander’s triumphs and defeats as he struggles as an immigrant to conquer his new world. As the story unfolds, he begins to accept where his true destiny lies, and realises he will have to face the past he left behind in Russia. The first twist at the end of book one, was an idea that came in the middle of the night some five years ago. I didn’t sleep again that night. However, I confess the second twist came after I’d finished the first draft of Heads You Win, and required a rewrite. One request – if you do read the book, please KEEP THE SECRET. 9781509851249 I Hardback £20.00 I November

PETER JAMES ON THE BACKGROUND BEHIND ABSOLUTE PROOF

On a Thursday afternoon in November 1993, whilst writing in my study in my Sussex home, the phone rang. ‘Is that Peter James?’ asked a polite, elderly sounding man. ‘Yes,’ I

replied, guardedly. ‘The author?’ My heart sank a little, these were the days before I was ex-directory. ‘Yes.’ ‘Thank God I’ve found you! I’ve called every Peter James in the South of England,’ he said. ‘Mr James, I’m not a crackpot, I was a bomber navigator during the Second World War, and until I retired I was a university lecturer in the Midlands. The reason I’m calling is that I have been given absolute proof of God’s existence, and I’ve been told you are the man who can help me to get taken seriously.’ ‘OK,’ I said, ‘I’m listening.’ ‘My wife recently died of cancer,’ he said. ‘Before she passed away we made a pact that I would go to a medium and attempt to make contact with

her. I duly did this, but instead of my wife coming through, a male voice came through informing me he was a representative of God. He said God was extremely concerned about the state of the world and felt that if mankind could be given convincing proof of his existence, it would steer us back onto an even keel. As proof of God’s bona fides, his representative gave me three pieces of information that no one on earth knows, and he told me there is an author called Peter James who could help me to get taken seriously. Mr James, I need to come and see you, I’m going to need four days of your time.’ I told him I was pretty busy and four days was a big ask! But I was privately intrigued enough to want to know more. I suggested we meet at my house for a cuppa, and that I would give him half an hour. If he could convince me during this time that we needed longer, we would take it from there. He agreed and I made an appointment with him for 4 p.m. the following Tuesday. I thought 4 p.m. would be a safe time, as my then-wife, a solicitor, would be home by 5.30, just in case he was a total nutter . . . At 3.55 p.m. the following Tuesday I saw, from my first-floor study window, an immaculate white Volkswagen Beetle trundle down our drive. We had a flagstone terrace at the front of the house, and the driver spent the next few minutes aligning the car perfectly to it. He climbed in and out repeatedly, holding a ruler to measure the distance between the front nearside wheel and the edge of the terrace and then the rear one. My heart sank at this display of OCD behaviour. On the nanosecond of 4

p.m. the doorbell rang. A thin man of about seventy-five stood there holding a large attaché case. He wore a neat suit with a matching tie and handkerchief, giving him the air of a bank manager. Holding out his hand, and fixing me with forlorn, rheumy eyes, he said, ‘Mr James, it is good of you to see me. You and I have to save the world. . .’ Ever since that meeting, I have been planning this novel and researching for it. In recent years my wife, Lara, and I have met with numerous Oxford and Cambridge theologians, academics and scientists, asking all of them the same question – what would it take for them to have absolute proof of God’s existence? Because, for my novel to work, I knew I needed something that would be believed by all people, of all faiths. There could be no other possible explanation. I believe I have found it.

NEW POWER

by Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms For most of human history the rules of power were clear: power was something to be seized, and then jealously guarded. Under this ‘Old Power’ we lived in a world of rulers and subjects. In New Power, Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms confront the biggest story of our age and trace how New Power is the key to understanding where we are and will prosper in the 21st Century. Drawing on examples from business, politics, popular culture and social justice, as well as case studies of organisations like LEGO and TED, they explain the forces that are changing the course of our age. In a world increasingly shaped by New Power, this book will show you how to shape your future.

Q&A WITH THE AUTHORS TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. We both come to this work – and this book – as practitioners. Jeremy is a lifelong activist and co-founded Avaaz, Purpose and GetUp!. Henry runs the 92nd Street Y in NYC and founded #GivingTuesday.

WHAT IS NEW POWER?

New power is the ultimate skill of the 21st century. It is the ability to harness the power of the connected crowd to make things happen. From Facebook, to #MeToo, to Donald Trump, those who master new power are transforming the world.

IS NEW POWER A GOOD THING, OR ARE THERE EXAMPLES OF NEW POWER BEING USED IN A NEGATIVE WAY?

The future is a battle for mobilization. Will the climate deniers spread their delusions more effectively than the climate scientists can share their facts? Will the messages from anti-vaxxers defeat those from public health professionals? Will the voices of reason be drowned out by extremists of all kinds? The battle for new power is urgent. We need those on the side of the angels to win it.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE 21ST CENTURY THAT HAS LED TO THE NATURE OF POWER CHANGING SO DRASTICALLY?

Hyper-connectivity and all the shifts that come with it. A generation of people are emerging with an “inalienable right to participate”. They have in their hands (literally) what you can think of as the new means of participation. This allows people to mobilize at remarkable speed and scale and across geographies and sectors

WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK?

We all recognize the world is changing. But we wanted to give people a framework to understand this change. Even more, we wanted to lay out the tools to help people succeed. From how to spread your ideas, to how to make change in your organization, to how to lead, New Power is a practical guide to getting ahead in the 21st century. It is your playbook for a crazy world.
