KEN FOLLETT

A Column of Fire

97815098571591 12th September 2017 I £20.00Hardback

International best-selling author of novels including The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, Ken Follett describes his fascinating research process for his latest novel, A Column of Fire. A Column of Fire opens in Kingsbridge in the year 1588, but the story quickly develops to range over several countries at a time when Europe was divided into warring camps of Protestants and Catholics. When Elizabeth I became Queen of England she was the only Protestant monarch of a major country. She quickly became public enemy number one in Europe. It seemed that everybody wanted to assassinate her, including the Pope, the King of Spain and the King of France. To protect herself she set up the first English secret service. The young hero

I always like these my stories of adventure and conflict to be attached to something real. Research is important to me, and to my readers, too. I like to look at historic places and walk around them, so that I have an accurate picture in my head when I come to imagine the great dramas of the past unfolding. Then I can imagine the people, the drama, the dialogue and the atmosphere. If I’m not sure about the facts, I find myself stumbling over my ignorance. Not knowing is an obstacle to my imagination. By the time I make a research trip, I’ve planned a scene in the city and so my curiosity is already aroused. What would it have been like? In the 16th century, the richest city in Europe was Antwerp. There were Jews, Muslims, Catholics and Protestants. So it is an interesting place to take my readers to as part of this international drama. I also have a scene on the waterfront in Seville, so I needed to know, what is the waterfront like? Paris in the 16th century was very different from the city we know today. I looked at a map of Paris in about 1550 which is a wonderful piece of work because it is half a street

plan and half a bird’s eye view. It helps me to imagine my characters moving around the streets. I’ve imagined that my French hero, a woman called Sylvie, lives in a particular street where her father has a bookshop and printing works. As well as normal books they sell illegal books, Protestant literature, such as the Bible in French. And, of course, the perfect place to do it is in the shadow of Notre Dame Cathedral. I visited the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on the bank of the river Loire in the great French town of Orleans and learned that the original cathedral was demolished by the Protestants in 1568. They blew up the four pillars supporting the bell tower and when the tower collapsed it destroyed the whole building. Such a dramatic episode - I thought, I think I better put it in the book.

a lot of time there.

of A Column of Fire goes to work for her and so becomes a sort of 16th century James Bond.

Pillars of the Earth

9781447265443 £9.99 I B Format Paperback

This is the kind of thing that you can’t fudge. You have to have the exact details and get them right to create the excitement. I still love The Pillars of the Earth. But it’s been fun to write a more wideranging story in World Without End. And now in A Column of Fire, the scope and the geography of the novel is much bigger. But I am still incredibly fond of Kingsbridge and so are the readers, so we also spend a lot of time there.
