Title_ “Follow the Light.”

Panos Katramadakis

When_ May 2019 Duration_ Four months What_ The

project addresses the anonymity problem observed in the residential area of Enghave Brygge Syd, Copenhagen, Denmark and proposes a lighting design which attempts to create a stronger identity. Software_ Processing (Java), Leap Motion, Autodesk Autocad, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Rhinoceros 3D, The Concept_ Residents are considered to be responsible in shaping and creating an identity of the area. Thus, the aim of the lighting proposal is to increase the quality time that residents spend outdoors in the neighbourhood, to enhance navigation and wayfinding by adding value to the existing landmarks of the site. The Process_ Before start working on the lighting proposal, research on bioluminescence and on certain design theories was conducted. Such doctrines as Gestalt theory, Non-Place and Place making are applied in the current project. The Light_ The phenomenon of bioluminescence is widely used on the present project. As part of the design process, a set of tests on bioluminescent colour hues are performed to discover how they could influence the colour rendering and the perception of other people in the context of street lighting. As part of the design stage, a working prototype concerning one of the interactive design elements was developed and programmed. The Findings_ We believe that the proposed design can enhance the identity of the area which will result in increasing the resident’s interaction with nature on the public realm.

Title_“Double Dynamic Lighting for Domestic Spaces.”

Panos Katramadakis

When_ November 2018 Duration_ One month What_ Combining daylight and electrical lighting for a more comprehensive approach in Lighting Design Software_

AutodeskAutocad, Dialux,Adobe Photoshop,Adobe Premieure The Concept_ A bedroom is more than a place for sleeping and resting, but a place for introspection, relaxation and privacy. Analysis of the daylight on an overcast day were taken to examine whether the average illuminance of the room on the task level, height of 85cm, would allow activities such as reading, resting and dressing. Color Temperature will automatically change throughout the day in order to set the light to the optimal color temperature to wake up, concentrate and relax. This will be set up accordingly to the user preferences and needs. The Goal_• Better distribution of the electrical light to complement dynamic lighting scenarios and reduce dark spots. • Regulate the circadian clock through the usage of electrical light systems (intensity and wave length distribution). • Reduce contrast on the wall of the window due to high exitance of the window (identified from the analysis). • Avoid brightness on glossy surfaces. • Adaptation of electrical light to different activities in the room, considering its function.

Title_“Composing Nocturnal Lightscapes. Lighting Installations at Saint Matthew forest in Chania, Crete, Greece.”

When_ September 2017 Duration_ Four months What_ A Short Film Software_ Adobe Premieure, CNC The Concept_ Lighting Installations were placed in the

Panos Katramadakis

SHORT FILM_ https://vimeo.com/334143248

Panos Katramadakis

MAKING OF_ https://vimeo.com/334440876

The Location

The Saint Matthew forest is located in a suburban area, 10 minutes driving distance from the city center of Chania, which is called Akrotiri. It is a sparsely populated area where mainly residencies are situated.

1 The CampFire

The meaning of the campfire, as a meeting point, the gathering around the campfire. Since the Ancient years people were gathering around the campfire, in order to get warm, to protect themselves from the wild animals and from darkness, to cook and to socialize. The campfire is the first symbol of shelter. This Light Installation opens the short film and signals the beggining of the course in the Dense Forest.

2 The Burning Forest The trees are burning. The fire has already started burning down the DENSE FOREST. Fire constitutes the symbol of this path, while being one of nature’s basic elements.

3 The Magical Triangle The Magical Triangle is suspended, highlighting the almost triangular opening that is formed from the vegetation, located on the side of the basic path. This Lighting Installation has a specific dynamic due to its geometry and to its impulsive intervention in the DENSE FOREST.

4 The Fire Wreath

The Fire Wreath is located on the side of the main path, emphasizing the circular opening shaped by the tree trunks. It is pendulant over the naturally formulated opening. Its circular geometry indicates the continious flow of obstacles and barriers in the rest of the path.

5 The Imprint The Imprint of the fallen tree that used to stand right at this point. This Installation follows and highlights the geometry of the trunk of the fallen tree. As it is laying towards the ground, it has left its imprint to the DENSE FOREST of Saint Matthew.

6 Decomposition The Decomposition of a fallen tree. The tree has finally touched the ground and its Decomposition has already started. This Installation emphasizes the decay, the disintegration, the remaining pieces of the fallen tree, which is becoming part of the ground where it once came from.

7 The Monster - Sculpture The Monster - Sculpture is just the root of an uprooted tree along with soil, rocks and other petrifications. The Monster - Sculpture is one of the many dangers that are awaiting along the path of the DENSE FOREST. After the Imprint of the fallen tree and its Decomposition here comes the monsterous sculpture with its imposing presence in the forest .

8 The Bloody Valley The Bloody Valley constitutes of a rugged and rocky opening. This Installation lits with red color the rocky ground, indicating the difficulties that one is facing in the DENSE FOREST. The Bloody Valley consists one of the obstacles of the path in Saint Matthiew forest.

9 Laser - Landmark This Instalation comprises the Landmark of the path in the DENSE FOREST. It’s role is to indicate the way in the path where the walker seems to be disorientated and lost. The Laser - Landmark has a strong presence in the forest due to it’s simple and strict geometry.

10 The Bright Obstacle

This Installation makes the path in the DENSE FOREST even more inaccesible. As a barrier in between two tree trunks in the main path of the DENSE FOREST, it tries to intercept the walker’s course through the forest.

This Installation refers to the spider web. One more obstacle - dificulty is added to the path of the DENSE FOREST. This time, the obstacle is not bright and thus not visible from far away, where it could also be weaved anywhere in the forest.

Portfolio 2021

11 The Obstacle - Spider Web

12 Totem - Sculpture At the end of the path, the Monster - Sculpture is finally transformed to the Totem - Sculpture. It is not yet dangerous and agressive and it changes hue. Each different hue refers to another element of the nature (fire, water, air), implying the presence of three different paths in the forest (Dense forest, the Ascend, Bright forest). This installation closes the short film, implying it’s continuation with the upcoming two paths.

Making Of

Panos Katramadakis

The making of this short film. Taking the equipment into the forest. Setting and testing the lights, trying to produce the desirable atmosphere. Position the light sources, filter the light, and set the camera to start testing the framing and the shots before the final shooting of the film.

Title_“NEO SCULPTURE :

Investigating human perception through a lighting installation.”

Panos Katramadakis

When_ June 2020 Duration_ Four months What_ A Short Film Software_ Autodesk Autocad, Autodesk 3ds Max, Unreal Engine 4.2, Adobe Premieure, Adobe Photoshop The Concept_ This project investigates the link between light and user’s engagement in kinetic lighting installations. In particular, it was questioned whether there is a method that the lighting designer can implement in the lighting design process so as to increase the level of engagement. The current project was developed based on the following research question: “How to increase the level of engagement of the user in lighting kinetic installations (Neo Sculptures)? Neo Sculpture_ An analysis in history of sculptures, perception of the space and the term of engagement was conducted. Based on the findings, the term “Neo Sculpture” was coined to identify new age sculptures that through light and motion create engaging experiences. It was found that light engagement occurs on three levels: emotional, intellectual and behavioural. The Method_ In an attempt to answer the research question, a Neo Sculpture was designed. Here, it was hypothesized that if a lighting design process is primarily based on human visual laws of perception, consequently the user’s experience will be more engaging. The Findinds_ The hypothesis was proved to be partially correct and led to further investigative questions regarding the creation of lighting kinetic installations.

Panos Katramadakis

When_ May 2019 Duration_ Two Weeks What_ A Short Film Software_ After Effects, Rhinoceros 3D, Adobe PhotoshopThe Concept_ The idea of this Project lies

Panos Katramadakis

in designing a wind/ human activated interactive Lighting Installation that will be placed in public spaces and serve as a Landmark. Transparent blue plastic is used on the top of the luminaire to mimic the colors of the sky under daylight. According to the viewing angle due to its geometry and material, an interplay between reflection and refraction will occur. It is wind activated, using dynamo technology and by people who can turn it manually, which will cause the lights to turn on. The intensity of the Led strip is dependent on the wind speed and on the rotational energy produced by the users.

Panos Katramadakis

When_ February 2015 Duration_ Four months What_

Design of an Opera House located on the remains of a rampart of the old city’s wall in Chania, Crete, Greece. Software_Autodesk Autocad, Adobe Photoshop, Rhinoceros 3D, Cinema 4D, Laser Cutter, CNC The Concept_ The idea lies in creating an experience of being in a cave. The multiple layers of the Opera House starting from the open public plaza on the ground floor, descending to the semi-pubic lobby with stores and exhibition spaces towards the private balconies (A, B) and finally to the orchestra which is situated 14 meters under the ground level. The continious discendence of the visitor in relation with the organic shapes design approach and the use of dark oak wood aims to create a feeling of exploring a cave with the element of surprise being present by the slow and constant discovery of the different levels of the opera. Moreover, the vertical opening located over the stage is used as a ligthwell (daylight and electrical light), a shaft and as a stage setting.
