Twins Baye and Milla Carolan had a huge gathering for their Dubbo Photo News photoshoot at the front of Dubbo's News Extra on Macquarie Newsagency.
Our photographer was clicking away while the twins’ family were almost turning summersaults to gain the
best image for our front cover! It all became a little too much for Baye, so he decided to eat the chocolate props which were much nicer than having your photo taken. We wish all our Dubbo Photo News readers a happy, safe and holy Easter..

THE REFURBISHMENT
By JENET STEWART
IN the midst of World War II an advance party of First Corps Amm. Sub-Park and the 2/1st Pioneer Battalion of Australian Army corps arrived in Dubbo on a block of land covering around 283 hectares, or 700 acres, on the outskirts of Dubbo – an area that’s more familiarly known these days as the location of Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
The land was then owned by the Baird family. Wally Baird was a member of the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion and a family member. Wally and his battalion trained at what was then called Dubbo Army Camp.
The camp was closed in 1947 and the buildings were auctioned off.
The original stone Caine was erected at the camp entrance in 1944, but over the years fell into disrepair and eventually found a home at the Dubbo Museum.
In 1997 the Dubbo Macquarie Lions Club rebuilt the Caine at the old campsite.
A formal handover of the Cairn was made to the Dubbo RSL Memorial Club by the President of the Dubbo Lions Club at the time.
The Caine is a mound of stones
built as a memorial or landmark. In ancient times soldiers going into battle would place a stone on a pile, and then at the end of the battle they would remove a stone.
The Dubbo monument commemorates the service personnel who trained at the Dubbo Army Camp during World War II.
Last week, a group of volun-
teers led by Rick Stubbs from the “Thank You For Your Service” organisation began a refurbishment project to tidy up the Caine. A pressure washer was used to clean the Caine and the paved area around it. New shells were also placed on the old concrete plaque. The posts surrounding the Caine were replaced and were
generously donated by Bunnings, Dubbo.
All volunteers shared a barbecue afterwards which was donated by Bourke Street Butchery.
A flag was raised in honour of the Dubbo Army Camp soldiers and was donated by Rick Stubbs.
"This is the second joint venture by myself and John Gibson
from the Dubbo Community Men’s Shed to maintain the military heritage alive in the Dubbo area,” Mr Stubbs said.
“We would like to say a big thank-you to the work group volunteers and the people and businesses who provided donations for the refurbishment project," he said.

The end of an era Regency Jewellers for Dubbo’s
FORTY-FIVE years ago, Regency Jewellers purchased Thomas W Clare Jewellers in Talbragar Street, Dubbo and with the purchase came a watchmaker, named Graham Walker. Soon the business needed more space, and relocated to Duncan’s Fruit Shop in Macquarie Street. The new store location was right next door to the Singer sewing machine shop. Not long after moving to the new location, the sewing machine shop suspiciously exploded and the wall between the two shops was dislodged, the roof fell in, and the fire caused unrepairable damage.
Regency Jewellers, the sewing machine shop and Palings music shop, all located side by side, had burnt to the ground by the following morning after the blast.
By Sunday afternoon, after the blast, everything that was recoverable had been removed and a front-end loader and tip truck drove through what was left of the shop and took it to the tip.
The city tip was the busiest it had ever been with people scratching through the rubble, hoping to find a diamond, a watch or gold chain.
There was a very hasty refit of a Katies store in Talbragar Street to make it look like a jeweller’s and a fire sale of damaged stock was such a huge success that it
continued while the Macquarie Street store was rebuilt.
The owners of Regency, with the help of some tradespeople, rebuilt and refitted the new store, not something one would be allowed to do today.
We made a few mistakes with the new building; it was a long narrow shop, and we made the roof high at the front and the back sloped to the centre with a box gutter to run the water away. The box gutter wasn’t big enough and every time it rained heavily, it overflowed.
There were a few other teething problems but nothing too major. We thought it was a pretty good job for a couple of jewellers and a few mates to achieve.
A new shopping centre in Dubbo was to open, called Orana Mall, and it was felt that would impact Macquarie Street, so Regency opened a store where the butcher is now located at Orana Mall. That store was named Everly Jewellers.
That shop continued successfully for several years and was relocated to its present position when the mall was extended. The store in Macquarie Street was closed and the store in Orana Mall was rebranded to Regency. The jewellery store is now the only tenant that has been in the centre since day one.
During a freak rainstorm, the roof fell in demolishing the entire shop at Orana Mall, which meant
another complete refit and closure while that was being done. Over the 45 years in business, we have made hundreds of friends, both staff members and loyal customers. None of our family is interested in taking the business forward so we have decided to hang up the Dubbo eyeglass and spend more time travelling, more time with friends and family, and a little more time overseeing the four shops in the Regency group. We wish to express a very big thank you to all the wonderful staff over the years and to the thousands of loyal customers who, without you, wouldn’t have given us such a wonderful life and pleasure for so long.

DUBBO Photo News first met Rick Stubbs at Dubbo’s old army camp Caine memorial at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Rick was helping with the refurbishment of the Caine with a group of volunteers.
After chatting with Rick, we found there was so much more that he offered our community – and in particular our veterans.
Rick joined the army in 1980 and served with the 10th Independent Rifle Company, 3rd Battalion (The Royal Australian Regiment ), Head Quarters 8th Brigade, 4th/3rd Royal New South Wales Regiment, 5th/7th Battalion (The Royal Australian Regiment), Deployed Forces Support Unit, and two tours of Rifle Company Butterworth, Malaysia.
Quite an extensive army career.
Rick was discharged from the Australian Regular Army as a Staff Sergeant and then joined the General

Reserves for three years. Finally, “I pulled the pin in 2003,” Rick said.
After his time in the army, Rick decided to start a Thank You for Your Service company. The company sells items such as badges, shirts, caps, flags, pins, stickers, wristbands, and a whole lot more dedicated to all veterans, past and present, irrespective of their service.
Ten per cent of the profits from the sale of these items goes to Dubbo veterans.
“I wanted to help families, and our service men and women,” Rick said.
Veterans can wear the Thank You for Your Service items with pride and are a means of acknowledging their service with Australian armed forces.

RURAL HEALTH MATTERS
Vaping and young people
By Professor Catherine Hawke
Vaping is quickly rising in popularity in Australia, particularly among young people. The use of colourful packaging, attractive scents, and advertising tactics together with misinformation about the ingredients and potential harms of vaping is driving a sharp increase in sales and uptake, much to the concern of public health and medical experts.
What is vaping?
Vaping is the inhaling of vapourised liquids through electronic devices known as vapes or e-cigarettes. The devices can look like cigarettes or other items such as pens, cylindrical or rectangular sticks, or USBs, they come in a range of colours and designs and are either disposable or refillable. Originally developed as a smoking cessation tool, they are inexpensive, easily accessible and come in a range of flavours and scents making them appealing to teens.
What are the risks?
In Australia, it is illegal to sell any vapes to people under 18 and the sale of nicotine containing vapes is restricted to those that have a prescription. The
main ingredients of vape liquids are propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine or glycol as well as flavourings and other chemicals. However, readily available vapes have been found to contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals such as cleaning products, nail polish remover, weed killer and bug spray. Furthermore, many vaping products are either labelled incorrectly or display misleading information. Vapes labelled nicotine-free have been found to contain high concentrations of nicotine with some vapes containing the equivalent of up to 50 cigarettes.
The long- and short-term effects of vaping are still being studied, however we already know that vaping can cause harms such as poisoning, burns,
addiction and lung injury.
• What are the signs of addiction?
The signs of vaping addiction are the same as those of cigarette smoking. The person can’t stop vaping and gets withdrawal symptoms when they do try to stop. These include: irritability, anxious feelings, a lack of concentration, difficulty sleeping, and cravings.

Region’s attractions see mixed visitation in February
While accommodation occupancy rates in the area were up in February compared to the previous year, visitation to the region’s major attractions remained mixed.
According to the Dubbo Regional Council’s Tourism Market Report, February’s occupancy rates hit 73 per cent and 53 per cent for Dubbo and Wellington respectively.
Dubbo Regional Council mayor Mathew Dickerson said this boost can be partially attributed to the several large-scale sport

events Dubbo hosted during the month, including the NSW Touch Association Junior State Cup.
“This event alone drew an estimated 7000 visitors to the city,” he said.
“Events such as the state cup and the Little Athletics Region 3 Championships generated a lot of phone enquiries about accommodation in the region and many travellers were spoken to at our Visitor Experience Centres as they travelled through the region and stopped to purchase hampers and a souvenir.”
While the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) enjoyed a major spike of 94 per cent in visitation, Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Old Dubbo Gaol, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Experience, and Wellington Caves all saw a 22 per cent, 10 per cent, 2 per cent and 43 per cent drop respectively.
Manager Regional Experiences, Jamie Angus, put the positive WPCC visitor numbers down to the current program of events and exhibitions that attract a broad audience.
“The Centre had a solid increase in visitation numbers in January, so seeing a similar result (during February) is fantastic,” he said.
“ArtExpress has made a return for the first time since the pandemic and this exhibition has attracted a number of school groups.”
Meanwhile, the poor Wellington Caves numbers has been blamed on the ongoing impact of flooding, meaning visitors cannot fully experience the activities the complex has to offer.

How To Make Selling A Property Easier
Selling any property is a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a quick guide:
Prepare in advance
Selling a property for the best possible price involves preparation. You want to ensure your property attracts as many prospective buyers as possible. Make sure you home looks appealing. Repair, repaint, maintain, declutter, clean, tidy, style.
The right agent
Selecting the right sales agent is vital. The agent you choose should understand the local market, have a proven track record and know exactly how to market your home effectively to achieve the price it deserves. Check out online reviews and meet them in person. Make sure it’s someone you feel you can work with and trust.
The right price
Ultimately selling a home comes down to what the market is willing to pay at that moment in time. Setting the price is an important decision. Set it too low and you could miss out on reaping the reward for a highly-valuable asset. But if you set it too high, you could alienate potential buyers from the outset, meaning your home’s likely to spend longer on the market and that price might then have to be reduced.
If you’re considering buying or selling a property, why not chat with Karen on email at karen@chantandco.com.au or mobile 0448 191 167.
THE Dubbo Local Government Area (LGA) has been identified as a thriving economy and a top affordable regional area for property investors.
According to a report titled “Roaring Regions – Top 10 Affordable Regional Areas 2023” just released by the PRD real estate network, the area experienced a 29.8 per cent population growth over a five-year period, reaching an estimated 74,084 residents in 2021.
In the September quarter of 2022, Dubbo LGA's unemployment rate was recorded at 3.3 per cent, which is below the NSW average of 3.9 per cent. This strong economic indicator coincides with an increase in property demand in the area.
Over the past decade, median price growth in Dubbo LGA significantly rose by 68.4 per cent for houses, 53.7 per cent for vacant land, and 91.7 per cent for
units. The median house price experienced particularly strong growth, increasing by 13.1 per cent in the last 12 months (2021-2022).
House sales in the Dubbo LGA gained momentum in 2020, as a result of the tree-change phenomenon, and reached a peak in 2021. However, an undersupply of houses was recorded in 2022.
From an investment standpoint, Dubbo LGA investors enjoyed average rental returns of 4.7 per cent for houses and 5.4 per cent for units as of December 2022, surpassing returns in Sydney Metro (2.2 per cent for houses and 3.5 per cent for units). Moreover, Dubbo LGA recorded a low vacancy rate of 1.2 per cent in December, maintaining a steady trend of being within the 1.0 per cent mark for the past 12 months.
These investment indicators suggest that properties in Dub-
bo LGA are occupied relatively quickly, minimising vacancy risk compared to the Sydney Metro region which had a 1.8 per cent vacancy rate in December 2022.
Coupled with more affordable entry prices and superior rental returns, the Dubbo LGA is an attractive option for investors, the report said.
In 2023, Dubbo LGA is poised to benefit from an estimated $887.7 million development pipeline, primarily comprised of commercial projects ($503 million), stimulating local job growth.
The planned developments include 517 lots, seven units, and 34 dwellings, which will help meet the increasing property demand.
Despite these efforts, the Dubbo LGA is expected to remain undersupplied due to the high growth in house sales over the past 24 months.
Walk around our estate, and you’ll meet people who value the things you do; community, comfort and connection.
We’re ready to welcome you to a lifestyle designed by you.

With all proceeds from the day going to mental health charity LIVIN, Perry’s dad Mark is encouraging the whole community to come along for bacon and egg roll, a yarn and to raise awareness for the cause.
The first ever Tradies
Breakfast in honour of Pez was held in 2017, not long after losing him in November 2016.
The Meredith’s connection to LIVIN, which was co-founded by Sam Webb of “Survivor” fame, was cemented after being introduced to Mr Webb at a presentation he was giving in town.
“Very soon after losing Perry I was approached by the LIVIN organisation. At that time I was president of Macquarie Rugby League Footy Club and the LIVIN organisation were running a seminar on behalf of Country Rugby League and Group 11; they were doing a presentation to Dubbo, so I got invited to go along to
Apex Oval,” Mr Meredith told Dubbo Photo News
“I was very much resisting at the time because it was all really tough, and I felt like I was still in fog and walking in this big, huge, horrible cloud and I really didn’t have the motivation to do much at all.
“Anyway, Liz and I talked about it and we decided to go along and listen to the presentation and it was the best thing we did, because listening to Sam Webb speak, his stories, describing how he feels and his pathway and his experience through grief and trauma and the like, it was as if he was standing up there telling Perry Meredith’s story.
“It just resonated with us, and it hit a spot and we spent ages talking afterwards.”
Before his passing, Pez had worked on some renovations at Ingenia Gardens manager Pippa Downey’s home, as well as doing the maintenance at the retirement village.
Over the years, Mrs Downey, like many others around town, became very fond of Pez and his trademark cheekiness.
“Pippa wanted to get involved so we came up with the idea of doing the
Tradies Breakfast. The first one was in 2017 and Sam Webb came along, it was magical,” Mr Meredith explained.
“The community up there [at Ingenia gardens], the oldies, the residents, God love them, they do their crocheting, they do their bric-a-brac and their arts and crafts, and cook – you can imagine the scones and stuff like that – and they just work their butts off for the 12 months leading up to this day annually.”
Growing in popularity each year, hundreds of locals are expected to attend the fundraiser, which Mr Meredith describes as more of a fete.
While the event is anything but sombre, it’s a chance to celebrate Perry and remind people of LIVIN’s powerful motto –It Ain’t Weak To Speak.
“It’s a chance to get together, and yes we talk about Pez, but we talk about mental health, and we encourage the fact that it’s not weak to speak,” he said.
“That’s the thing with LIVIN, it’s very much the awareness about looking out for these signs, and being proactive in talking to your mates, in talking
takes their own life and tradespeople make up a large proportion of these tragic deaths.
Statistics suggest that the suicide rate among young tradies is three times higher than for other men, with 190 construction workers taking their lives each year in Australia.

Real-time monitoring provides CEWH and NSW Environmental water managers with essential information for water flow management decision-making during breeding events, ensuring the chicks have the best chance of survival.
The CEWH recently decided to release water into the wetland via the Narran River to maintain bird breeding conditions.
Dr Simon Banks from CEWH highlighted a recent agreement with a private landholder on the Narran River, resulting in additional water flow to support bird breeding.
Waterbird populations have significantly declined in eastern Australia since the 1980s, making successful breeding events vital for replenishing bird numbers.
Researchers estimate around 5000 breeding pairs of Australian Pelicans at Narran Lakes, along with several thousand breeding pairs of other waterbirds.

FOCUS ON FLETCHERS
A new way of working for Kirsten
By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY
RESEARCH commissioned by a large-scale Australian office products supplier found almost 44 per cent of Australian office workers are still working from home this year, 25 per cent on a hybrid basis, and onein-five (19 per cent) are working fully remote.
One of those is Kirsten Tweedie who accepted her role with Fletchers a little over a month ago – after she and her husband, a former Fletchers employee, moved to Condobolin where he has started work as a paramedic.
“I didn’t think I’d hear back after I applied, but they’ve arranged it so I can do most of my work from home fortunately, but I come into the office once a week at the moment because I’m still quite new and getting to know everyone. After that it will probably go monthly,” Kirsten said.
“Fletchers knew from the getgo that I Iive two-and-a-half hours away and that I was fine driving to
and from there, every now and then. Most of the programs I use are cloudbased so that makes it easy for me.
“They got me set up with dual monitors, it’s really worked out well.”
Kirsten’s goal has always been to work in accounting which she started in earnest by studying a degree in commerce from the University of New England in Armidale.
“I’ve been working in public practice accounting ever since, but I wanted to shift over into commercial so I’m working towards that now.

School’s valuable asset enjoys 10 years in the gig
Mr Wright himself finished up his school studies after Year 9 in 1985 and has since completed several TAFE courses to hone his skills.
He found the Education Support Teacher’s Aide course the most interesting.
Within his role, Mr Wright said the most important responsibility is to create a “safe and happy environment” for students to learn in.
Beyond that, his remit sees him support independence while building rapport and relationships; support personal care and respect dignity; expand and support learning needs to suit individual students; support and encourage future needs and career choices; support and encourage self-care, self-worth, and confidence; and foster the students setting and achieving their goals.
Mr Wright’s speciality is in disability support, and his average day is “always eventful”.
“I work in a faculty supporting staff and students who have so many different and varied needs,”

OPPORTUNITY OF THE WEEK
Receptionist – Full Time or School Hours – at SJ Shooter Real Estate
ARE you a people-person who loves helping?
While you may not have worked in real estate before, you’ve got demonstrated experience working with people and are looking for the chance to contribute to a growing business with a positive workplace culture.
You have a natural aptitude for making those around you feel like ‘you got this’, whether it’s customers, co-workers or your friends and family. You love putting a smile on people’s faces, and as a first point of contact, you embody the mantra ‘you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression’.
You’ll spend most of your time being
a cheerful greeter to those who visit or call our office, and get the chance to learn the ropes of leasing and rental application processing.
Success in this role may lead to career progression into other opportunities within our business.
If this sounds right up your alley, we would love to hear from you.
This would be an ideal position for a parent re-entering the workforce or a school leaver seeking full-time employment. Hospitality, retail and previous reception experience are highly regarded.
There’s lots more information on this position at www.seek.com.au/ job/66500280
DUBBO WORKS WANTS YOU!
he said.
“It’s always important to bring a smiling face as my job is all about connecting with people because through connection, we help others to learn and believe.
“You might find me supporting students in the construction and manufacturing rooms, supporting students with mealtime procedures, personal care or supporting the classroom teachers with delivery of the curriculum, including English, life skills, mathematics and more.”
While Mr Wright admits continuously meeting some of the individual needs of staff and students can be challenging, the opportunity to share experiences with them is what he loves most.
More importantly, he described the role as being “rewarding”.
“I know my supervisors, Head Teacher Erin Bromage and Deputy Principal Bonita Stevens, really appreciate my work,” Mr Wright said.
“The students also show their appreciation, in their own way.”

Marcuz Dela Cruz
What is your current role? I work at SJ Shooter Real Estate and I have been working here for a year and five months. My current role is sales associate for Samuel Shooter. What gives you something to smile about at your work? Speaking to different people, knowing their situation and my ability to connect with people, it feels as though I’m walking a journey with them.
How does your job challenge you? Getting out of your comfort zone, having challenging conversations when breaking bad news to someone.
What’s been the most embarrassing/funny moment at work? We had a photoshoot for our real estate business at Down The Lane, and as I was about to leave, the battery in my car decided to go flat and I had to jump start it.
If you could replace your boss for a day with a celebrity, who
would it be, and why?
It would have to be Floyd Mayweather, if anyone knows him, it would be his work ethic and knowledge. That would be ideal for someone who is young like me, and I would benefit from someone like him.
When you were a child, what did you dream of growing up to be? I wanted to be a pro basketball player.
Do you think robots or A.I. could ever replace your job? Absolutely not. The reason why is because there is no real
emotion or connection you create with a piece of technology as opposed to a person, which I think is key in real estate.
What’s something you can’t leave home without (that isn’t your phone)? My watch, sunglasses and bottle of water.
What are you listening to at the moment? I am listening to SZA’s album “SOS”.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? I’m a fighter in the sport of boxing.

Dr Immi’s on the run for Cerebral Palsy Australia
By JENET STEWART
DUBBO paediatrician Dr Immi Fabros has been practicing her running skills for some time now.
And skills she will need when she embarks upon the gruelling 42.2km Canberra Times Marathon on April 16.
Immi is no stranger to running. In the past she has also competed in the Sydney City2Surf, a 14km run from Sydney CBD to Bondi.
She has also participated in six half marathons, including the recent Orange Running Festival half marathon, and is a very regular Dubbo Parkrun participant doing the 5km run every Saturday along the banks of the Macquarie River.
But for Immi it’s not just about running a marathon and having the stamina and endurance involved to run such a long distance, but more about fundraising for a good cause and helping other people.
She has fundraised for Australian Red Cross by competing in the City2Surf, and Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation by hiking four peaks in Victoria with her daughter, and more.
This year, in the Canberra Marathon, she’ll be running and fundraising for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.
The Alliance is a non-profit organisation which provides
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
FOR THE LOVE OF SQUASH
If there’s a name in Dubbo synonymous with squash, it’s Beryl Mortimer. Her love of the sport arose by following in the footsteps of her brother, Garry, who was an A-grade player.
“I picked up the racket, I loved it and have been playing it ever since. I started playing 55 years ago when he had two courts behind the old police station before they built the new station,” the Dubbo Squash Club president said.
When that centre closed, the RSL opened with 8 courts, then Robert Orr built 13 squash courts near Furneys.
“It was a fabulous centre. It had everything, a club room, fully equipped kitchen. You couldn’t want anything more, plus a gym,” Beryl recalled.
“Peter Deakin took over and he was a professional promoter. People just came out of the woodwork. I think we held the largest open tournament I’d say in NSW, but probably Australia. Fourteen hundred and fifty-something people turned up, including a busload from the Institute of Sport up in Queensland.”
That busload included Australia and the worlds’ best including Rodney Eyles,
Michelle Martin, Rodney Martin, Adam Schreiber, Heather McKay and Geoff Hunt.
“It was massive,” Beryl said. So too has Beryl’s contribution been to the sport and players over the decades in Dubbo.
From 1994, Beryl held the office of treasurer until 2003 when breast cancer sidelined her for a while, but her daughter Vicki and fellow-volunteer Kerrie held the reigns until 2006 to the present, when Beryl resumed her role.
Possibly her greatest triumph is starting the city’s first junior tournament which was held annually until 2019.
“Until 2020, everything was done manually, all by pen and paper. These days it’s on the web which is when I said no more. I don’t understand it and don’t want to learn it my age, so I handed it over. Of course, I do still help because of my knowledge.”
Hardly one to sit back and just watch though, Beryl can still be found on the court four nights a week.
“Monday, I play competition. Tuesday, I play socially. Wednesday is a social night. People coming new to town can get a
research, advocacy, intervention and assistive technology innovation for the betterment of all children and people diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
Immi, in her practice, has seen significant improvement in function and well-being of her patients under the care of Cerebral Palsy Alliance.
Approximately 34,000 Australian people have cerebral palsy which can affect their posture, balance, and ability to move, communicate, eat, sleep and learn.
Immi is inspired by this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
She is grateful to the overwhelming support that she has received for this fundraising and her marathon training.

BERYL MORTIMER Dubbo Squash Club volunteer
With a deep commitment to the sport and to the people who play it, Beryl hopes to see Dubbo establish a dedicated centre to squash.
“The players are out there but they don’t want to wait for courts which they currently have to do, but as soon as we get courts the numbers will rise.
“What I’m hoping for is to get some land up on Sheraton Road next to SportsWorld or near there, near the schools. A multipurpose centre with table tennis, squash, volley squash.
game and they contact us via Facebook. I quite often get a call from people saying they’re in town and can they get a game and I’ll tell them to come down Tuesday or Wednesday.
“Friday, I’m here for the juniors round robin. These days we take our junior tournament to Narromine’s courts, and we let Narromine Rotary do the canteen.”
For many years, the world of squash was a Mortimer family routine, seeing Beryl taking time off to have her three children, Vicki, Adam and Tim and when

old enough, they all played in the western circuit junior tournaments held in Orange, Parkes and Bathurst.
Sadly, this week is the first anniversary of husband Arthur’s passing.
Pragmatically, Beryl says squash has been a source of comfort.
“Squash has virtually been my saviour because I’m not sitting at home every night feeling sorry for myself, thinking woe is me. I come down here and I socialise and it’s good. Everybody needs that,” she said.
“Dubbo has the opportunity of being part of the Dave Fuller Inter-town tournaments which are currently held in Parkes. Teams come from Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow, Canowindra, from all the local towns, send teams. It is the best weekend.
“Parkes is getting all the competitions because they’ve got the courts. The fellow that runs Parkes is on the board of NSW Squash. He’s promised us, if we can get courts here, we can get the tournaments.”
The next big event on Beryl’s calendar is a junior tournament in Narromine on Sunday, April 30.

Art @ PARAMOUNT
By JENET STEWART
You’ll have noticed when driving along Wingewarra Street this week that there’s the beginnings of a large mural on the building wall at Paramount Tennis Club.
The mural, which will take approximately four to five weeks to complete, is being painstakingly painted by local Dubbo artist Gill Pedrana.
“I was initially contacted by Paramount Tennis Club at the end of 2020. They had been thinking of a mural for the club house wall facing Wingewarra Street and had seen the mural I had been commissioned to do by the NSW Department of Primary Industries in 2020 at the Dubbo Visitors Information Centre.
“In 2021 the job of designing, producing and painting the Paramount mural was advertised for
tender. The brief was something colourful, family-oriented and of course tennis-themed. I wrote a detailed proposal of my idea for the mural and feel honoured to have been chosen for this commission,” Gill explained.
Gill produced the idea using silhouettes of current members from toddlers upwards and spent some time photographing Paramount Tennis Club members of all ages whilst they played tennis.
“The mural had to be recognised as being Australian so the skyline and sides of the mural will be lightly framed by colourful gum leaves which will also represent the club being rural,” Gill said.
Next time you’re driving along Wingewarra Street, make sure you check out Gill’s amazing tennis mural.

Catching up at the Wellington Soldiers Club
By COLIN ROUSE
PHOTO News visited Wellington Soldiers Club during the week to catch up with some of the people enjoying each other's company in the club's lively atmosphere. Memorable moments were being shared among friends and community members at this popular venue.
Don’t fence me in? Have say on Wello’s Cameron Park
“GOOD fences make good neighbours,” the old saying goes, but would you like to see one around the Cameron Park playground in Wellington?
Dubbo Regional Council wants to hear from residents and visitors who use the playground, on whether they want it fenced off.
The survey follows a Council resolution in October 2021 on the renewal of the Victoria Park Playground after which the situation at the Cameron Park playground was raised by community members. This discussion led to council-
lors deciding to reallocate some of this funding from Victoria Park in Dubbo, to Wellington’s Cameron Park playground for a suitable fence – subject to further community consultations.
“This consultation gives residents the opportunity to have their say and let council know if they would like to see a fence surrounding the Cameron Park playground or not,” Council’s Manager of Recreation and Open Space, Ian McAlister, said.
“The fencing proposed would be similar to the Victoria Park Playground fencing in Dubbo,
and we encourage residents to let us know what they think.
“It is only through consultation such as this that Council can make sure we understand what residents need within the community,” Mr McAlister said.
Dubbo Regional Council is now in a position to undertake the works and is asking the community to have their say.
Residents are invited to comment on this matter on Council’s website: dubbo.nsw.gov. au/public-exhibition.
Opportunity to provide feedback closes at 5pm on Thursday, April 20.

THUMBS UP!
Thumbs up to the council team which maintains the lesser known walkways around our city. The plant life along one such walkway in South Dubbo was benefitting a bit too much from the rain, but has been trimmed and tidied very nicely in the past week. Thanks!
Thumbs up to the bus drivers who do the run from Dubbo towards Sydney. This is a belated thanks from a traveller who caught a bus prior to Christmas. The driver was very professional and respectful.
Thumbs up to the two young swimmers, Mekhi and Toby-Ray, pictured at Dubbo Aquatic Centre on the front cover of last week’s Dubbo Photo News. By the smiles on their faces, they were enjoying themselves. Great photo by Jenet Stewart.
Thumbs up to all the team at Geoff Richards Panel Beating for doing excellent work. Well done and thanks.
Thumbs up to Dubbo Regional Council for the parks, riverbank areas and grass areas of our city. They are in excellent condition. Well done. Hoping to see similar attention at the old Dubbo Cemetery in Barden Ave.
Thumbs up to the blood donor, Jim Griffiths, featured in Dubbo Photo News for making his 75th whole blood donation at Lifeblood Australia Red Cross. What a champion, and what a life saver… literally.
Thumbs up to all the talented young musicians who performed at the Sunday afternoon concert at Macquarie Conservatorium. Always great to see such a variety of ages and a wealth of talent in our city.

In the early hours of April 17, 1977, Dubbo’s central business district was rocked by an explosion that destroyed the Singer sewing machine shop and seriously damaged adjoining premises in Macquarie Street.
Police investigations concluded that an accelerant was used to but accumulated fumes from a bomb when the perpetrator ignited the device.
Investigators found the
explosive device was linked to the store’s telephone and a call to the premises was logged at the time the explosion occurred. Due to the timing of the blast, the main street was empty and no one was injured as a result. However, it could have been
catastrophic if anyone had been walking or driving past. Projectiles were scattered in a wide arc from the store, with one sewing machine reported to have penetrated an armourplated window in the ANZ Bank across the road.

Dubbo riders take-on Pacific's riders Pacific's best at Brisbane Oceania meet Brisbane Oceania
Contributed by DUBBO CYCLE CLUB MEMBERS of the Dubbo Cycle Club have again been in action in Brisbane at the Anna Mears Velodrome contesting the Oceania Track Titles.
With riders such as the incredible New Zealand team, plus the Cook Islands, Fiji, Guam, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, it was a real Pacific islands festival.
For Dubbo riders right through the grades to Elite level, competition was extremely fierce against rivals that are some of the best in the world.
Day 1
Danny Barber kicked-off proceedings in the Qualifying for the Elite Mens Teams Sprint by taking about.2 of a second gain on the current world champion, Thomas Cornish, on the apposing team in the second spot. He managed to get fourth in the team’s sprint in a fine display, although a medal was not won, some real dazzling times revealed his great ride. Kurt Eather also kept his cool to gain a fifth in a frantic race in the scratch event where the pace was brutal with racing immediately on at the starter's gun.
Day 2
Danny Barber set a new personal best in the qualifying for the sprint with a time of 9.837 over 200m and,in the first round, easily-beat Blake Long (WA) before moving on to face Byron Davies in Round Two. Danny took on Byron Davies and, after giving Danny too much lead, the boy from Dubbo wound it up to win convincingly in a smart piece of riding.
Danny then came-up against world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Mat-
thew Glaetzer and, in a tight tussle to the line, was beaten by only half a wheel. With more to come, this is not the last time Danny will comeup against the best at the Oceania Titles.
Day 3
Ben Anderson in the beautiful green and gold for the first time, qualified second in the U19 Teams Pursuit.
Kurt Eather came in eight in the Omnium Scratch Race with Haylee Fuller finishing in a similar position and picking-up points for the Omnium overall. Danny Barber took the initiative in the Elite Men’s Keirin with a brave move in the first heat to move to the front of the bunch, to take control and move into the semi-final.
Haylee Fuller rode the Omnium Tempo race and finished with 16-points overall, which was a good effort seeing the New Zealand riders filled the first four positions.
Danny Barber then took Keirin a long way out to ride a similar way in Round One and, unfortunately, got kept higher on the track and lost some momentum in a race of winner-takes-all.
Kurt Eather ran a good race in the Men’s Omnium Tempo race before running eight.
In the elimination event of the Omnium, Haylee Fuller was caught-out early and was eliminated after just missing out and Kurt Eather was eliminated around mid-field. In the Points race for the Omnium, they rode well to be with the front runners but managed midfield a top ten for Kurt Eather in a very fast-paced race. The youngster, Dylan Eather, also hung onto the field and finished with them to gain a lesson in courage during an
incredible Elite race.
Day 4
Haylee was a finisher with the field at the end of the Elite Women’s Madison, which is an extremely difficult event when partnered riders sling each other into the race of rides doing 50+km/hr. Kurt Eather got to fourth in an extremely-hectic Madison event for the Elite Men where he partnered with James Moriarty.
Day 5
Dylan Eather was out in the Elite Mens 1km Time Trial qualifying, an event that demands that riders dive deep into the red zone and often need support in the form of a catcher once completed, for this brutal event.
Dylan finished in a time of 1:05.179 and fifth at the time. Last up for the Dubbo Club, was Kurt Eather in the 40km points race and, after a great race and two sprint wins, Kurt rested on 10 points and 12th overall. The Individual Time Trial and Road Race is to come in competition at the Oceania Titles. The time trial is currently being held with Haylee Fuller U23 and Isabelle Russell U19 wished all the very best. With information just to hand In the 20km Time trial, Haylee has managed to get third and a bronze medal and Isabelle 12th.
Closer to home, the track season is coming to an end with some fanfare with the long-time sponsor, Dubbo Hard Core Soils, sponsoring the last Wheel-race on the last tracing racing night of the year this Tuesday. This will include an amazing line-up of tiny tots racing safely around and in front of family; adding to the fun of the night.
Along with the Junior, Women and Men's events, it should prove to be a great night of racing at the Dubbo Regional Cyclist Facility.

DUBBO Photo news received a heads-up from former Dubbo High student, Patrick Bourke during the week, pointing-out that Laurence Astley, who donated the time-honoured trophy in 1923, was not only a local automobile dealership owner, but also loved motorbikes.
Patrick credits John Payne, who is researching the Astley Cup for Bathurst High School, with an anecdote about his feats on the two-wheelers.
“Laurie Astley set a record in 1909 for motor cy-
cling between Bourke and Sydney. This record was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on 23 April 1909 (p10, http://nla.gov.au/nla. news-article15052661) and in the sports newspaper, The Referee, on page 6 28 April 1909. The Motoring column written by “Petro”, writes about this motor cycling record in more detail (https:// trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/ article/120632185).
“Laurence Astley’s motorcycling record, set during April 1909 of 31 hours 59 minutes with one hour rest at Dubbo, 45 minutes rest at Molong and
30 minutes rest at Bathurst on his 3.5 horsepower Triumph motorbike with Continental tyres”.
The feat was accomplished on the rough roads between Bourke and Sydney (500 miles/800km), was a testimony to his endurance and courage.
Laurence was also President of the Dubbo City Bowling Club in 1919/20, and again in 1937/8.
“He was made an honorary Life Member of the Dubbo Bowling Club. In March 1953 the Club gave Laurie Astley a farewell on the occasion of his
departure from Dubbo. At the large gathering at the Dubbo Bowling Club, which was reported in the Dubbo Liberal on 27th March 1953, his extensive involvement in the Bowling Club over nearly 40 years was noted. It was stated in the paper, that Mr Astley was largely instrumental in raising finance for the erection of the club house. Alderman E B Serisier, who was the Mayor of the Dubbo Municipal Council for many years) spoke of Laurie Astley’s good citizenship,” Patrick wrote.
Great turn-up for Combo Bowling and presentations
Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’
FORTY-SEVEN bowlers congregated on the RSL North Dubbo Sporties greens last week to celebrate Combo Bowling and some presentations.
Ros Joseph, Cheryl Storch, and Pete Sinclair scrapedin on the final end by a single shot, after being lockedup 13-all with Chris Strojny, Colin Teale, and Pete Ruzans on the penultimate end. The Ros/Cheryl/Pete trio, had chalked-up a good five shot lead through the first half, but Chris, Colin and Pete fought back to square the game on the 13th, and then the 15th to just miss out on the last.
Newcomer Frank Bartlett was the lead for Mel Giddings and Roy Frost against Frank Armstrong, Allan Stratford,
and Col Cottee, however he soon realized the strength of his opponents. Trailing by 13 shots after eight, he managed to steer his team to the points on the last four ends of the match, but went down 26-7; 11 ends to five.
Doc Livingston, Pete Bennison, and Mike Twohill, shared four ends each with Hildebrandt, Ken Whittaker and Karen Greenhalge although the latter led by three. That was the last of their scoring as the good Doctor and his mates rolled home with a full tank 23-10.
Paul Wooldridge, John Cole and Matt Quill played Leo Balstad, Gaye Cottee and Graham Ross in another thriller. Four ends each in both halves but some flur shot ends on the way home were enough to get Graham;s team up 19 to 14.
Daphne Dunbar was another who was welcomed to the Combo Bowling family on Sunday. She teamed-up with Steve Kelly and Phil Knight and smashed their way to seven end wins and 17 shots in the first eight against Tim Wilkins, Therese Gaiao, and Neil Hayburn, and continued the blitz after drinks, adding another 21 for an impressive 38-6 victory. Where to from here Daphne? It’s a big act to follow!
In a much more sedate game, Mary Perry, Alex Rae, and Paul Goodstat, tried hard to take the lead against John Kennedy, Julie Brown, and Col Dover. Unfortunately, they fell two shots short after eight ends and conceded another four on the second to lose 20-14.
Vicki Hummel volunteered as the Swinger and kept Al
Andriske and Gordon Scott at their best, while working hard to control Roger Sherwin and Eric Satchell in their game. Al and Gordon struggled through the first section winning just three ends and a score of four. Was it over-confidence that overcame Roger and Eric in the second half, or perhaps it was Al and Gordon going harder, winning seven of the eight, recording 12 shots for a well-played 16 to 13 win. Well done Vicki who kept it close for bothe her teams!
Terry Millar, Ian Humphries, and Ricky See, knew they were in for a tough game against Ray Strawhan, Col Hume, and Bryan O’Sullivan. With just a solitary shot the difference after eight, Ricky’s side held it together and held onto their slender lead for a 13-12 win.

Water Polo club winds-up another fine swim season

A SUCCESSFUL season that saw new players, the growth of juniors, and two players representing NSW at the National titles in Perth, wrapped-up last week at the Dubbo Aquatic Centre.
The young athletes showed their skills in the Grand Final, fighting hard for a 6-5 win over Team Torpedoes.
“They only had one sub all season, showing that the energy and enthusiasm of youth is an irreplaceable gift. Most of the
other teams had 5-6 subs each week,” Cath Osbourne wrote.
“The competition is holding strong and is still very social-focussed.
"We welcome newcomers to our city and the amazing facilities at our Dubbo Aquatic Leisure Centre,” Cath added.
The winter months will no doubt see athletes training in the indoor facilities at the RSL, and some are expected to head east where indoor pools allow them to continue to hone their skills.
Who knew? 1928 “Hupmobile” — a classic Detroit pre-war car
BY DAVID DIXON
This beautifully-restored 1928
Century 6 Hupmobile, is a classic example of one of the many small manufacturers that flourished at the start of the motoring era but who were swallowed-up by the giant makes as World War II approached.
Hupmobiles were built from 1909 through to 1939 by the Hupp Motor Car Company of Detroit, with its eccentric name, coming from co-founder, Bobby Hupp.
Hupp competed strongly against Ford and Chevrolet with more than 65,000 cars sold in the pre-Depression year of 1928, but sales and
production began to fall by the 1930s with Hupmobile ceasing in late 1939.
The Century 6 Series A was available as this four-door Sedan, and also as a twodoor Sedan, a two-door Sportster and a two-door Coupé which were all assembled at the Chandler Motor Car Company factory in Cleveland, Ohio.
A total of 50,000 Century 6’s came-off the production line with the engine a straightsix cylinder generating, at the top of its range, 56 brake-horsepower with a top speed of 70 miles per hour (110km/h).

Roger’s finely-tuned motor, won the big money lap at Ducks!
By GEOFF MANN
Photos by MEL POCKNALL
CAR-LOVER, Roger Mackay, timed his heat lap to perfection, stopping the clock a mere.07 seconds outside his time to claim the Ducks Blues Meat April Closest-to-Time trophy race.
Unfortunately fellow Duck, Ron Everett fired up the after-burners too soon – he must have thought he was in Melbourne in the Formula 1 – and, despite a slick swim, was red-carded for being nearly four seconds over-time.
The old stager, Tom Gray, showed however that slow and steady wins the race, and was declared the winner ahead of Peter Allen and Jacob Pearce in his event.
Ron obviously benefited from his extra hour of sleep after the end of
daylight saving, as he and Glen Smith also both broke the time barrier in the final of the Backstroke/ Breaststroke Brace relay.
Neil Harris and Marg Ross then got the points from Brian Schloeffel and Birthday boy, "Cap’n Sparkle", aka, David “Ned” Sparkes.
Marg was not so fortunate in the final of the 50-metre Freestyle, after leading from the start and touching the wall first, she was deemed to have broken her time by 1.42 seconds. “Bad luck Marg, great swim,” was the conciliatory note from Judy Walsh!
Peter Hargreaves (and his new hip) stepped-up to the podium to claim victory from Peter Allan, Tom Gray, and David Sparkes in his race.
There is no official Ducks swim next Sunday, but Judy wishes everyone a happy and safe Easter.
and Dad Peter. Both were still smiling after CYMS downed Orange CYMS in the league challenge at Molong on Saturday. Pete was especially thrilled to be back at Dr Ross Oval. “My last season of league was as coach of the Molong boys” he said.

RSL-Colts back on top after Whitney Cup win
By GEOFF MANN
Photos by MEL POCKNALL
A SIX-WICKET haul by spinner Greg Buckley and a fighting knock by Dubbo Cricketer of the Year, Marty Jeffery were the highlights of RSL-Colts six wicket win over CYMS in the Whitney Cup Grand Final recently.
Playing before an eclectic and enthusiastic crowd of former players from Dubbo’s “golden years” in the 1970s, Colts proved too tough in a gripping game. Buckley and fellow spinner Mitch Bower put the stranglehold on CYMS on Saturday reducing them to just 128 but despite the Cougars striking four times before stumps, Jeffery (47 not out) and
tyro Ant Atlee (26 not out) saw off the greens’ attack off on Sunday to regain the trophy they regard as their own.
In Second Grade, two Newtown teams met on No. 2 Oval but only one had a chance to bat. It was the Kempston show with Jack blasting 140 in a partnership of 131 with dad Michael (73), while another brother Charlie and Aiden Giffen both made 37. Chasing 335 to win, the other Newtown team’s hopes were washed out with a storm on Sat night.
CYMS defeated Macquarie by seven runs to claim the Kelly Cup (Third Grade) and Newtown Tigers d Newtown Kings to hold the Dawson Cup.
