It’s less than a month until opening night for Dubbo Theatre Company’s latest production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and all the cast are super-excited to bring this highly respected and epic rock opera to Dubbo audiences on July 21, 22, 28 and 29.

Some of us may remember Jon English staring as Judas in the 70s version of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, but equally as star-studded will be the enthusiastic group of theatre greats from Dubbo and the surrounding region. “The whole cast are excited to bring this well-loved and epic rock opera to Dubbo audiences,” director Jamie Foster said. “This is a show that many of our cast have grown up listening to… for some it was their first introduction to musical theatre. We’re sure it’s the same for many Dubbo locals. Every rehearsal I’m blown away by the talent in our cast. The vocals give you goosebumps, and it’s compelling to watch the cast giving their all and having a great time together.”

Cast as Jesus Christ, Allyn Smith said: “To be honest, I considered myself to be in musical theatre retirement. Since the

last show I performed in Dubbo I’ve said to myself, ‘The only show that would have a hope of getting me involved would be Jesus Christ Superstar’. This is a bucket-list dream role. I can’t wait to share it with Dubbo audiences,” Allyn said.

Newcomer Luke Doyle will be performing as Judas. There are 40 people in the cast with many familiar and new faces making up the ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ team. The cast includes Courtney McAnespie as Mary Magdalene, Steven Burns as Pontius Pilot, Greg Markwick as Caiaphas, John Gibson as Annas, Benn Bryant as King Herod, Jackson Gibb as Peter, and Elissa Burden as Simon, and a strong group of senior ensemble members as the apostles.

Creative Director, James Foster; Musical Director, Dannielle Foster; Vocal Director, Sarah Drake; and Choreographer, Gabby Judd have lined up again to produce another memorable show for Dubbo audiences.

Tickets are available from Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre or online at drtcc.com.au

‘Survival and Success’ by Nick Standish

Photo News had the pleasure of meeting last week with Nick Standish, who has just produced an outstanding read with his new book, ‘Survival and Success. The true story of a Luftwaffenhelfer'.

Dubbo

The book is a memoir of his European years from 1932 to 1949. You see, Nick was born in Yugoslavia and, at the age of just 12 years, was drafted into the Ger- man Air Force as a Luftwaffenhelfer. (A Luftwaffenhelfer was literally an Air Force assistant, also commonly known as a Flakhelfer, which was any member of the auxiliary staff of the German Luftwaffe during World War II.)

Nick’s encounters during this time were traumatic near-death experiences which included being shot for sabotage and losing his family, only to find his father and brother again in Salzburg just before the Allied tanks arrived. ‘Survival and Success’ is a thrilling memoir… one of those books that you simply cannot put down.

It’s available now at The Book Connection in Macquarie Street, Dubbo, and retails for $19.95.

Care finders, to help our seniors, find the services they really need

WITH an ageing population, connecting our elderly to the myriad of care services that they may require, is becoming increasingly complex.

To help overcome this issue, a new program, known as “care finders”, has been launched in the Central West to support senior members of the community struggling to find suitable services that help improve their lives.

The Social Futures care finders program, is being delivered across the whole region covering Greater Dubbo, Narromine, Gilgandra, Warrumbungle and the Mid-Western regional local government areas.

Linda Hayes, Social Futures General Manager Disability Inclusion said that, as part of the program “care finder” coordinators meet with vulnerable older people to discuss their needs and help them to connect with community and mainstream services and My Aged Care providers.

“This program will focus on the most vulnerable older community members. Some older people need extra support to find their way around the care system, and the Government’s ‘My Aged Care’ service,” Ms

Hayes said.

“This is often true of older people who don’t have family nearby, or friends or helpers who fully understand the care or aged care sector,” she added.

Ms Hayes explained that the central western care coordinators, had strong community connections and expert skills supporting senior community members to find aged care services and other resources.

“Care coordinators listen to your story and explain all the options, then help to set up the best combination of health, aged care and other local services to meet needs.

“The care finder service team has a specialist understanding of care supports and can help people work with the federal My Aged Care program, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and locate other care services and supports in the community,” she said.

Ms Hayes said the care coordinators tailor support around individual needs and anyone can refer an older person to their services. To be eligible, the older person needs to be 65 years or older, or 55 years or older, for Indigenous seniors.

“As we age, it’s vital to

remain connected to others and the community and feel safe and cared for – and have choices,” Ms Hayes said.

“Our care coordinators, can support many different people,” she added.

Our seniors, often have issues with knowing how and when to seek the support available from government and not-for-profit services,” Ms Hayes said.

“It may be that some senior community members need a bit of help to overcome language barriers, others could be reluctant to ask for support, or deal with a government service.

“And some older people may also be dealing with cognitive decline; that’s where the care finders can help, and yes, we definitely support people who are not yet receiving aged care services,” she said.

To get in touch with care finders, phone 1800 719 625, email: carefinder@ socialfutures.org.au, or go to: www.socialfutures. org.au/service-category/ seniors-in-community/

“The care finder’s goal, is to provide every individual with the right supports for them,” Ms Hayes concluded.

3D Dubbo toilet going where no council

It’s our public toilet into the future – and the first such structure in Australia – with innovative 3D printing of the new amenities building at Macquarie Lions Park West already underway.

Demolition of the old block has been completed, with the new concrete slab in place awaiting the arrival of construction company Contour 3D’s printing gantry last weekend. The 3D printer is expected to start printing the new amenities building early this week.

All batching, mixing, and installation of the building will be completed onsite, with the addition of oxide colour to be be added to the mix with the aim of

eliminating the need for painting, Dubbo Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson explained.

“This will be the first time Dubbo Regional Council has used 3D printing technology and it is hoped that, if the trial is successful, council will investigate future opportunities to utilise the technology,” Cr Dickerson said.

“This project is on the cutting-edge of technology, offering us a chance to see the future of construction as it happens,” he added.

The method involves Contour 3D printing the structural components of the building, including walls, internal struc-

ture, and roof. Following the 3D printing process, the internal fit-out will be completed prior to reopening.

“This method has the potential to revolutionise the way we build infrastructure and housing,” Cr Dickerson said.

“Dubbo Regional Council is leading the way across the nation with this innovation being the first council in Australia to utilise this construction method,” he added.

Public inconvenience of the project will also be minimal, council’s Manager Major Projects Ian Whipple said.

“In terms of impact on local traf fic, we are expecting there will only be delays

upon the arrival and departure of deliveries and equipment, so the expected interruptions are very minimal,” Mr Whipple said.

“However, we are aware that there will likely be a lot of locals wanting to see the process in action, so we’re asking those coming to look at the printing process to please be smart about where they drive and park around the site, and follow any traf fic management directions given by those working on the site,” he added.

Council aims to have the Macquarie Lions West Park amenities building reopened in late August 2023.

104th Dorothy celebrates her BIRTHDAY!

Words by JIM AULD

DOROTHY Josephine Auld

was born in Glen Innes on July 10, 1919. She was the first-born child of Joseph and Emily Russell.

Dorothy was the eldest of 13 children, the others being: May, Audrey, Joe, Joan, Betty, Ivy, Patrick, Michael, Harry, John, Jill and Colleen. Dorothy, Betty, Joan, Ivy, Jill and Colleen are the six surviving siblings.

Dorothy and her family moved throughout Central NSW, residing in Armidale, Emmaville, Glen Innes, Singleton and eventually settled in Sydney. In Sydney she met and married Noel Auld in January, 1944.

Their lives involved them residing in various Sydney suburbs as well as Hexham on the Central Coast.

Dorothy and Noel had three children: Patricia, James (Jim) and Jan. Her husband Noel

Dubbo Photo News was honoured to attend Dorothy’s 103rd birthday last year, an amazing evening and it was fantastic to catch up with her and her family again.

Dubbo OzFish group gets funds for repairing local riverbanks

LOCAL volunteers from Australia’s only recreational fishing charity are hooked on restoring riverbanks in the region.

This follows the Dubbo chapter of OzFish Unlimited recently being among four groups selected statewide to receive “Riparian Restoration Grants” to help deliver major habitat restoration projects for local waterways.

Riparian zones – the area of vegetation bordering a waterway – play a key role in providing healthy habitat for both fish and wildlife, with the roots of native trees vital in retaining riverbank structure, and mitigating the risks and impacts of of alternating floods and droughts on soil structure and bank integrity.

As well as Dubbo, volunteers from Euston/Robinvale in southern NSW, Tenterfield and Wagga Wagga will work with NSW Landcare and private landholders on a range of activities including installing more than 50 in-stream habitats, planting more than 3000 native trees, erecting 3km of riparian fencing to protect vegetation from livestock, and controlling invasive weeds.

Specific elements of the project include the deployment of complex habitats made of logs, root balls, and limestone rocks, and planting native trees and installing riparian fencing. All of these activities are designed to help restore healthy habitat, create better fishing, and ensure thriving ecosystems in Australia’s waterways today and for future generations.

OzFish will also deliver community “Fish Focus” forums in the region. These will provide local community members with the inspiration, knowledge and support to get directly involved in habitat restoration.

OzFish Unlimited is a national environmental conservation charity estab-

lished to improve the health of our rivers, lakes and estuaries. It is a member-based organisation dedicated to make our fishing grounds healthy, vibrant and more productive.

Their active work includes habitat restoration such as re-snagging; riverbank planting; clean-ups; fishways; shellfish reefs; and educational and community capacity building programs.

These projects also have the potential to deliver benefits, not only for native fish, but the wider local community. OzFish’s Senior Program Manager for Inland NSW Braeden Lampard believes.

“OzFish volunteers are working to im-

Working local to make a global impact

BRIONNY Carruthers grew up in the remote outback village of Wanaaring, almost a thousand kilometres from Sydney, 200 kilometres west of Bourke and 550 clicks from Dubbo.

After attending boarding school in Forbes, the move to Dubbo in 2013 found her working for almost a decade in sales.

By April this year her career took a new turn when Brionny signed on with the logistics team at Dubbo’s Fletcher International Exports grain terminal.

Though still new in the job, she’s already playing an integral role in the shipping of goods which are processed at the grain terminal to dozens of countries around the world.

“I work with Sarah, Eddie and the trade team as well, and together we arrange contracts for different commodities to be exported overseas that go on the train and then on to the shipping lines, and then they’re shipped overseas to all different destinations,” Brionny told Dubbo Photo News

“My job entails rate negotiations with the shipping lines and making sure they have enough equipment and space on their vessels. My old industry kind of crossed into logistics a little but it’s a very different world here and there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes which is great because every single day is different.

“For example, we could have a train that stops completely and that just throws out the entire day and the schedules and that sort of

thing.”

When asked what makes

Fletcher International Exports a great place to work, Brionny says without hesitation she loves the team environment.

“We all work in an open office, and we all have our own areas that we work on, but we still bounce ideas off each other.

“Roger also walks in here most days when he’s in town and just says hello and checks in on every single person. You can’t ask for a better boss, really.”

Fletcher International Exports owner, Roger Fletcher began his career droving sheep, and his company now exports to over 80 countries in the world.

“I think above all though, the biggest thing I love about working here, personally, is the challenge.”

For all great creatures, country vet shortage is a growing concern

WHILE many viewers of a certain age may fondly remember the old English television series, All Creatures Great and Small, the life of a country vet is often very far from idyllic.

A consequence of this reality is that it’s getting harder to find large animal veterinarians, farmers say, amid calls for increased training and targeted skilled migration.

So urgent has the issue become that Shane Kilby, cattle producer from Dubbo, has vowed to take the issue to this week’s (July 18–20) NSW Farmers Annual Conference.

“As a livestock producer, it’s vital to have a good relationship with a large animal veterinary practice, so you can get the

care you need, when you need it,” Mrs Kilby said.

“Vets are indispensable for us, whether it’s pregnancy testing, calving, or even just looking-in on a sick animal,” she added.

While the number of registered vets had increased on average by three per cent each year, they were overwhelmingly moving into small animal practice as pet ownership increased.

“Sadly, we’re seeing a decline in the number of large animal vets across the state,” she said.

While those that are around do their best to fit you in, we can’t let the numbers continue to slip,” she observed.

Mrs Kilby said that a motion from the NSW Farmers Dubbo Branch to the annual confer-

OPPORTUNITY OF THE WEEK

HealthPathways Manager

WESTERN NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) is currently seeking motivated individuals who have a passion for primary healthcare and community wellbeing.

The HealthPathways Manager is responsible for providing effective leadership and management of all aspects of the Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSWPHN) HealthPathways program, while ensuring the team contributes effectively to the strategic and operational objectives of the program, working within the resources available. The HealthPathways Manager will also be responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with key stakeholders in the program, including but not limited to general practitioners, gen-

ence would call for investment in a range of measures such as financial incentives to get vets into Western NSW; ongoing tax incentives for vets to work in rural areas, and more training places targeting large animal vets training places.

“If we could get the same sort of HECS forgiveness for vets that teachers, doctors, and nurses, can access, we might get more vets into Western NSW,” Mrs Kilby said.

“We would also like to see increased migration of skilled vets to plug the gaps in the short term, and really do more to train more vets for the future, maybe by reviewing the selection criteria for entry into veterinary science,” she concluded.

eral practice and primary care staff, Local Health District staff, Streamliners, Subject Matter Experts and Clinical Editors.

The HealthPathways Manager supports the strategic objectives of WNSWPHN by providing leadership to the clinician led HealthPathways program. 1979 AMC Concord, the last flowering of small but great AMC brand

The late 1970s were the last great flowering of the traditional American ‘Yank Tank’, before changing tastes, convenience, driver safety, fuel savings, and emissions regulations, changed motor car buying habits forever.

And you don’t get more classic Americana than the 1979 AMC (American Motor Corporation) Concord. By the standards of the time though, these were considered sporty little runabouts for

the wife or kids, generating only about 110-brake horse-power, while dad went to work in a giant Chevrolet Impala or Dodge Charger.

This two-door sedan boasted typical features as a straight (in-line) six cylinder engine under a standard three-speed automatic transmission; power steering; a ‘woodie’ external detail; velour trim; a half-vinyl rooftop, and white-walled tyres.  AMC was a niche manufacturer that

survived by being “a small company deft enough to exploit special market segments left untended by the giants,” later buying such iconic models as the Studebaker and Packard. It was eventually bought out by Renault, and then Chrysler, but not before its early four-wheel drive variants of the Eagle and the Jeep Wagoneer became the first true off-road on-road crossovers in the American market.

You don’t get more classic Americana than the 1979 AMC (American Motor Corporation) Concord. By the standards of the time, though, these were considered sporty little runabouts for the wife or kids, while dad went to work in a giant Chevrolet Impala or Dodge Charger.

Another weekend of top results at Sydney’s Dooleys Junior Tour

Rhonda suits up for Thailand

CLUB

DUBBO Cycle Club has had yet another successful weekend of cycling with its riders at the Dooleys Junior Tour of Sydney.

The two-day tour is event number five of six for junior cyclists that brings in riders from across NSW, Victoria, and the ACT.

Stage One and the opening stage, had the riders contest a 4km Individual time trial against the clock that saw the Dubbo boys off to a solid start finishing with Pickering in fifth and Farr in sixth place.

Stage Two was a 16km Road Race that saw Cooper Farr taking-out the bunch sprint to fin-

breakaway winner, Jett Stokes from Randwick, who is proving to be a fantastic young junior and formidable opponent throughout the series.

Sid Pickering managed sixth place and finished on the same time as Cooper and the other eight riders in the leading bunch.

Stage Three had both the Dubbo riders, Sid and Cooper, positioned well in the bunch with both riders managing to pickup valuable time bonuses in the mid-race sprint prime with Sid nudging-out Cooper to take a three-second bonus and Cooper taking two.

This sprint proved a decisive point in the race with Farr and

and Stokes increased their lead over the chasing pack and, with the finish line in site, Cooper Farr set himself up perfectly to take-out the final stage with Sid Pickering coming home in fourth place just over 30 seconds behind Farr and Stokes. In the final GC (General Classification) event held after the three stages, Cooper Farr had done enough to secure second place overall behind tour winner Stokes (of Randwick) with Lidcombe Auburn rider Lucas Strbik in third;, Sidney Pickering also

Both Farr and Pickering have been performing consistently well throughout the season, and the results have shown their dedication. Both Cooper and Sid are currently sitting in the top five for the entire season-long series of tours.

All eyes now will be on the final event of the 2023 NSW/ACT Northwave Junior Series which is the Port Macquarie Percival Property Group Junior Tour on the weekend of August 5-6. The local Club continues to wish the riders the very best in their racing and training.

FOR most sportspeople, representing their country is the pinnacle of their athletic success, as well as their proudest sporting moment.

Dedicated local dragon-boater, Rhonda Betts, is now very much in that “boat"; still smiling after her Australian representative gear arrived for her during the week.

Rhonda has been with the Orana Dragons since the club’s formation and has travelled around the world to compete in regattas.

Now the seasoned professional is about to taste the ultimate success her hard-work has earned her, as she heads to Thailand later this month to compete in the world championships with the the Australian team.

Top games of the year recalled; as weather rolls-in on greens

THE popularity of Sundee bowls, was again evident with 33 bowlers rolling-up at Sporties last weekend, even though the weather looked and proved to be an unkind guest!

Looking back at some of the games played this year, the following stand out:

In equal fourth place and played on March 5, Chris Strojny in the lead for Colin Teale and skipper Col Cottee (the three Cs). Little did they realise what was to transpire as they took the green against Doc Livingston, Gordon Lummis, and skipper Matt Quill. Almost in the blink of

the eye, the Three-Cs raced to an eight-shot lead in just five-ends, leaving Matt and his side wondering how to get into the match. But they did find a way with a triple on the sixth and added a couple to be within three after eight.

The second half was one they will want to forget, as the Triple Cs mastered the green, winning seven of eight ends, scoring 18 shots! Overwhelmed, Doc, Gordon, and Matt were powerless to halt the onslaught, managing to score just a single for their one end. A big win for the three Amigos 26 to 6; 12 ends to four.

In third place, played back in February when Ken Whittaker, Mel Giddings, and Bryan O’Sul-

livan combined to take on Julie Brown, Allan Stratford, and Josh Andriske. This was the first game Josh played at the Sundy bowls, and everyone knows he is one capable roller of the bowl.

Bryan and his side began with a steady single on the first end, but then just watched the others smash in 13 shots using seven of the first eight ends. JAJ gave little away, and ensured themselves a win even with eight ends to bowl.

The punishment continued after the break. Josh and his side kept smashing in shots. A couple of triples added to a couple of fours to keep the scoreboard ticking, 15 more shots and, by

the 15th “mercy” was called! An emphatic result, 28 shots to five, 12 ends to three to Julie, Allan, and Josh.

Game No. 77 played in early April, almost made it to the top of the pile. A newbie to Sundy bowls, Tim Wilkins, teamed with Therese Gaio and Neil Hayburn; while Daphne Dunbar and Steve Kelly partnered Phil Knight to stamp their authority from the start.

Tim, Therese, and Neil had one after eight and added five on the way home. Daphne, Steve, and Phil kept their scoring spree going, piling on another 21 shot, including a spectacular seven to seal a mammoth 38 shots to six win.

(Drum roll, please!) For the top

team so far for the year, we have to go way back to January when Rob Pfeiffer and Mike Twohill played doubles against Steve Kelly and Tod O’Dea.

The latter were the unfortunate ones suffering the demolition, despite being only five shots behind at the turnaround. All the damage was done after the break, as Rob and Mike scored big, endafter-end. Their tally included a couple of fives, a triple, a four, a couple of two’s and, to rub salt into Steve and Tod’s wounds, a near-perfect seven on the last - 37 to three; 14 ends to two.

Hopefully, next week will have good weather for the Sundy bowls to roll-again!

Southern Stars to light up Dubbo track

Johnny "Wallo" Wallace, was recently remembered as a benevolent man who saw need and tried to solve it in everyday life, on and off the sporting field.

FAREWELL “WALLO”

A good man who left an indelible mark!

FRIENDS and family gathered to farewell one of the legends of our community on Tuesday.

Johnny Wallace was remembered as a benevolent man who saw need and tried to solve it in everyday life. He was truly one of nature’s quiet achievers, welcoming people into his various businesses he ran at different times, consoling those who needed a gentle word or smile to keep going and sharing his stories of great times he’d spent with his family and mates, on and off the sporting fields.

KARTING action continues this weekend at Lincoln County Raceway, with DR Kart Australia and their team coming to Dubbo to race the next round of the Southern Stars Series.

Dubbo is a favourite for many DR drivers and, with a few competitors now fighting for the series lead, there is sure to be some exciting battles across all the classes.

‘It is important that we continue to sup-

port and develop drivers by promoting great competition,” DR Co-Principal, Chris told Dubbo Photo News

“We can teach kids to be respectful, while giving it their all on and off the field,” fellow Co-Principal Paul, chimed in.

DR is a major sponsor of the series and are giving-away a full chassis to a lucky driver present at the last SSS race, as well as a full pit weekend where the driver will pit with the team for a race event and get first-hand support and coaching.

‘We love Dubbo and we love this series so be sure to say hello and visit us at our DR tent this weekend,” Paul said.

“Come and see how the DR team works and if there is anything we can do to help you in your journey, whether you are just starting, having fun or taking on a series, we are here to help,” Chris added.

The DR team is coming-off a strong performance and keen to keep the momentum going over two days of red-hot action on the Brocklehurst track.

New local sports grants to help shoot, cook, and keep score

New goal posts, a scoreboard, and cooking equipment are among recent Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) grants to three local football clubs.

The grants are not a straight give-away though, the nearly $18,000 made available through the Dubbo Regional Sports Council’s Playing Field Improvement Fund, is to be matched almost dollar-for-dollar by each of the sides themselves.

Dubbo Regional Sports Council Executive recently signed-off on the grants comprising:

 $10,193.63 to Wellington Junior

6x4

Rugby Club for installation of a new scoreboard

 $3300 to Wellington Warriors Football Club for replacement goal-posts for those that suffered recent flood damage

 $4500 to Dubbo Junior Rugby League Club to purchase and instal deep-fryers for the Victoria Park 2/3 canteen.

With total funding distributed at $17,993.63 and the cost of the three projects totalling $40,257.27, the successful applicants will need to contribute the balance to ensure the projects are completed.

The grants will help all three

Wallo was one of those all-rounders, equally at home with a bat or tennis racquet in his hand or throwing his arms around bulky props and slugging it out in a scrum against the likes of future Aussie captain Ian Walsh. Many stories were told of Johnny’s generosity, whether it was providing sponsorships to junior teams or wiping the slate for those who may have been struggling to pay their bills.

John Wallace touched everyone in his long and enterprising life. His legacy is love - offered and received.

codes to provide invaluable support for local sports players and fans, Dubbo Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson said.

“These projects won’t just benefit these clubs. The infrastructure they create will be available for the wider community, making more opportunities for the growth of a range of sports across the region,” he added.

Sporting groups can consider applying for the next round of funding from the 2023/2024 Dubbo Regional Sports Council Playing Field Improvement Fund which will open in July.

Triumph and tragedy

The Astley Cup and the Montevideo Maru

THE Astley Cup annual inter-school sporting competition began in Dubbo in August 1923 with a boys’ rugby league game between the Dubbo High School and Sacred Heart College, Dubbo.

The Astley Cup trophy itself was donated by Laurence Astley, a Dubbo businessman. A staunch Methodist, Mr Astley made one of the conditions for the running of the Cup, was that it was not to be played for on a Sunday.

Hundred years of Astley Cup history celebrated at WPCC exhibit

DUBBO College, Orange High School, and Denison College Bathurst High Campus, mark 100 years of the Astley Cup this year, with the century of hotly-contested competition being celebrated by an exhibition at the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC).

The competition consists of tennis, boys’ and girls’ soccer, netball, basketball, athletics, and rugby league, as well as the Mulvey Cup debating competition.

The Cup itself has direct ties to Dubbo, having been bought from a local jeweller and donated by Joseph Lawrence Astley after having the words “play the game” engraved on it.

“While the Astley Cup may have slipped through Dubbo’s fingers this year, there is no doubt that

there will plenty of opportunities to get it back in years to come as demonstrated by the variety of results over the last 100 years,” Dubbo Mayor, Councillor Mathew Dickerson said.

“It’s great to see the Black-andRed Army keeping the flag flying, on-and-off the field, not just for Dubbo College, but also in memory of Dubbo High School,” he added.

A range of items from local collections fill the case in the replica classroom from the 1950s at WPCC, just-off the main museum space, with the precious artefacts helping tell the story of the long-running interschool competition.

Through the SPARC Cultural Plan, the community told Council it was keen to see the Dubbo Regional Museum celebrate the experiences

that are unique to this region.

“The exhibition features newspaper clippings, photographs, uniforms, programs, mascot and other objects, as well as some priceless footage from the Astley Cup in the late sixties,” WPCC Curator, Kent Buchanan, said.

“We extend our thanks to Jill McCann, Wayne Garnsey, Judy O’Connor and Dubbo College Senior Campus for all lending items from their collections for this exhibition, allowing us to capture a snippet of the early years of some of Dubbo’s heralded sporting heroes, as well as some not so heralded ones,” he added.

The Astley Cup Centenary exhibition will be available for viewing until Sunday, July 30.

In 1925, Bathurst High School and Orange High School joined Dubbo High School in competition for the Astley Cup, and the high school sporting competition was expanded to include tennis (boys and girls), athletics (boys and girls), girls’ hockey, and girls’ basketball (later renamed netball, when “American” basketball came to Australia during the 1960s) as well as boys’ rugby league. In later years, boys’ basketball, and girls’ and boys’ soccer, have been included.

Dubbo High School ceased as a school in 2000 when the three public schools in Dubbo merged to form Dubbo College, which now competes for the Cup against Bathurst and Orange High Schools.

Many local students, wenton from the Astley Cup to serve in World War II; with recent links found between the tragic sinking of the Japanese prison ship, the Montevideo Maru, in which hundreds of Australian servicemen and women drowned exactly 81 years ago after it had been torpedoed by an American submarine, and Dubbo High.

As far as I know, no known Astley Cup representatives died on the Montevideo Maru. However, two ex-students of Dubbo High School, Frederick Sadler and John Poole, did die in this naval disaster; with Poole a student at Dubbo High, when the

and Laurence Astley’s youngest son, John, were in the Order of Knight as members of the Dubbo Methodist Church and, on the 5th of May, 1938, John Poole was ordained a Methodist Minister. During 1940 with his young wife, the Rev John Poole travelled to New Guinea where they were missionaries on the island of New Britain. War records now show that the Rev John Poole died on the Montevideo Maru on 1 July, 1942, the wreck of which was only just recently located off the coats of The Phillipines.

Another Astley Cup connection to the Montevideo Maru, is through Ron Walden who played in the 1923 Astley Cup for Dubbo High School. After Ron Walden’s family left Dubbo and moved to Sydney, Ron took up playing rugby union and had a very successful career. He played over 100 first grade games for Manly, many games for NSW, and four tests for Australia, including three as Captain.

During the 1930s, Ron played with and against a young rugby union player who came from country NSW, Mac Ramsay. Mac made his rugby union test debut for Australia on 23 September 1936 against the New Zealand Maori at Palmerston North, New Zealand. Ron was captain of the Wallabies.

During WWII, Mac Ramsay enlisted in the Australian Army. He was selected for the No. 1 Independent Company, Australia’s first commando unit raised during WWII. Records show that Mac Ramsay also died on the Montevideo Maru on 1 July 1942.

The U/10 girls Dubbo Devils is a group of 14 players from Dubbo, Gilgandra, and Narromine, that were selected in the 2023 Western Youth League team at the representative level.

This is the first season the girls have played together, and recently ended the season with a week-long stay in Canberra, playing in the Kanga Cup tournament – the largest soccer tournament in the southern hemisphere for girls aged 9–16 years.

The girls were entered in the plate and faced a line-up of top competition from around the State.

The girls spent the week together and played outstanding soccer which led to them entering in the knockout rounds positioning equal second.

With a fantastic semi-final, where they picked themselves up from a 2- nil score at halftime, before finishing the semi-final with a 3-2 win,

The girls had just missed out on winning against the Matilda’s in an earlier match that week, with a score of 2-1.

The Dubbo Devils however pulled together an outstanding final match taking the win at 1-0, finishing as the Grand Final winners in the Kanga Cup tournament for their age group/plate.

Coach Matt Stonestreet and player Regan Godber were also invited to speak in the opening ceremony presentations on the Sunday prior to competition commencing.

“The stamina these girls showed and the commitment to the sport were second to none,” a spokesperson said.

“The level of sportsmanship is to be commended for such a young group of athletes with each and every one, having a bright future ahead of them,” they added.

“The friendships developed over the season and the final week at Kanga Cup, will be surely lifelong,” the spokesperson concluded.

Raiders celebrate Indigenous family

FROM the days when superstars Tommy Rutherford, Johnny George and the names Smith, Hill, and Lake filled team lists, Dubbo Macquarie has fostered amazing rugby league players.

Initially it was only in the men’s sides only but, in recent times, the ladies have also unleashed their latent talent across the west and beyond.

On Sunday, the Raiders celebrated Elders, players, supporters, and families, and took time to remember those who have made a contribution to the club and community. It was an inclusive event foe the match set-down with the visiting Forbes Magpies.

In on the on-field action, Macquarie took the League Tag result 18-0 and the Reserves 46-14, before capping the day with a 40-14 win over defending McDonald Cup Champions, Forbes. The Magpies Under 18s side, however, showed why they are rated in the top teams in the western area, with a thumping 54-8 victory.

Macquarie next travels to Nyngan on Saturday, while CYMS host Parkes after both first grade teams went down on Sunday – CYMS 20-18 against Wellington; Parkes 49-30 to Nyngan.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup (226g) unsalted butter softened at room temp.

1 cup (200g) dark brown sugar firmly packed

1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon bicarb soda

3/4 teaspoon table salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

2 cups (212g) old-fashioned rolled oats

1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut, 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans

1 1/2 cups semisweet or milk chocolate chips

METHOD

1.Preheat oven to 175C (350F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

2.In a large bowl, combine butter and sugars and use an electric mixer to cream together until thoroughly combined and light and fluffy.

3.Add eggs and vanilla extract and stir until thoroughly combined.

4.In a separate bowl whisk together flour, bicarb soda, table salt, and cinnamon until thoroughly combined.

5.Gradually stir dry ingredients into wet (either using mixer on lowspeed or by hand) until ingredients are thoroughly combined.

6.Add oats, coconut, pecans, and chocolate chips and use a spatula to stir together until ingredients are evenly distributed.

7.Drop cookie dough by heaping 2 tablespoon-sized scoop onto prepared baking sheet, and, if desired, use your hands to round into a ball (the dough will be a bit sticky, but this will make rounder, more uniform looking cookies). Space cookies at least 5cm apart.

8.Transfer to pre-heated oven and bake for 12-14 minutes and edges of cookies are light golden brown. Centers may seem slightly underbaked still, this is fine, allow cookies to cool completely on baking sheet where they will finish baking but still be soft and chewy.
