OAM for Peter’s halfcentury of local community service AS reported on last week, with nearly five-decades helping the local community, Peter Keirath was honoured at this year’s Australia Day awards being named Senior Citizen of the Year as well as earning a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australian Honours List. Filling-in for out-of-action Mayor, Councillor Craig Davies (knee replacement), acting Mayor, Cr Dawn Collins hosted the local celebrations on Thursday morning, saying the good turn-up for Australia Day, was gratifying. “We had a good breakfast in Dundas Park with great weather... the egg and bacon rolls were a hit, we held it early to beat the heat with about 140-people there,” she explained. “We also had a citizenship ceremony for a local lady who is now an Australian which is always exciting,” she added. As well as honouring local heroes, attendees also heard a fascinating address by Narromine’s Australia Day Ambassador, “Donna the Astronomer” Burton, whose love of the stars came about when travelling with her drover father in Outback Australia. ed in Coonabarabran – also presented all the awards on the day. “She explained that she mainly got interested with the stars because she was out underneath them,” Cr Collins explained. “She didn’t have a TV, so she became a star-gazer, and was the fi rst women worldwide to discover a comet,” she added. The awarding of Mr Kierath as Senior Citizen of
the Year, as well as the announcement of his Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), was a major highlight for the community, she said. “Peter’s a retired businessman with more than 50-year’s community service, this included for Timbrebongie House for retirees for which he was instrumental in getting that going,” Cr Collins explained.
“He was inspired to do this, by seeing many years’ ago, so many old people in hospitals with nowhere to go,” She said, however, that this was only one of the many strings to his volunteering bow: “He’s also been the driving force behind establishment of the Narromine Aviation Museum. “This is one of our major tourist attractions and a fantastic facility that draws thousands of visitors to the Shire,” she said. Talking from Sydney, Cr Davies agreed, saying that Mr Keirath’s work with the Museum is a fi ne tribute to the young men and women who served and trained in aviation in country towns like Narromine during World War II. “Peter, as well as being heavily-involved with Timbrebongie House, was instrumental in establishing the Aviation Museum, which is an absolutely-iconic local tourist attraction. “Just under 3000 trained at Narromine during the War, and they played a key part in the air war that eventually saved Australia,” he added. Other award recipients ranged from Citizen of the Year (Sally Everett) to Community Event of the Year, the Narromine Jets Community Colour Run.

Near-record Trangie turn-up for Australia Day
TRANGIE enjoyed a near-record crowd for last Thursday’s Australia Day celebrations, showing the continued importance and relevance of our National Holiday for so-many locals. The large and enthusiastic crowd gathered at Trangie Bowling Club to commemorate the Day and to also congratulate community members who were recognised for their outstanding contribution to their community. Each year, community members are asked to nominate fellow locals who they consider have made a significant, voluntary contribution for the betterment of the community. The selection panel then have the unenviable task of choosing a recipient in each of the categories listed. In the absence of Narromine Mayor, Councillor Craig Davies (currently in Sydney recovering from a knee replacement), locally-based councillor, Adine Hoey extended a welcome to all and thanked the Trangie Action Group who hosted the event. After a Welcome to Country delivered by John Barnes and the singing of the National Anthem, seasoned master of Ceremonies, Shane Dolton introduced the Australia Day
Part of the a near-record crowd for last Thursday’s Australia Day celebrations, in Trangie were, from left, Sue Dolton, Lyn Davies, and Patti Mitchell. Ambassador, Alan Davey, a former private investigator turned author and bootmaker. Alan’s adventures as an investigator were little short of hair-raising, tempered by the odd touch of humour, and have been committed to paper in
his biography, The Lone Operative. The book was available for sale and proved popular with many local readers. Alan then generously donated two books to be auctioned with proceeds going to the Eugowra Flood Appeal.
Introducing the Award recipients, Cr Hoey congratulated and commended each one on their dedication and support of their local community. Presenting the various community awards, ranging from Junior Sports Person (Tawhi-
ao Selway); to Senior Citizens (Patricia Skinner), is a key part of the celebrations, she explained. “I was honoured to give awards for people in the community; people that do so much for so many,” she said. “To me, Australia day is celebrating the good in the community, the good work that people do,” she added. Cr Hoey later said, that the turn-up of locals was one of the highlights for her, of this year’s celebrations. “It was a fabulous roll-up, I go to them every year, and it was the best attendance that I have ever seen, easily,” she said. “Council funded some roast beef and gravy rolls and hamburgers and, when we were fi nished, they were all gone... there was nothing left, it was great to see,” she said. To round-out the evening’s festivities, raffle winners were: the $100 vouchers were won by Clare Jenkins with the “Lazy Sussan” – made and generously-donated by Ron Faichney – won by Dawn Collins. With the formalities over, the music of local DJ “Rockin’ Robbie” provided entertainment fun for the rest of the evening.
Dry weather aiding weed control as road-crew numbers increased
CURRENT dry weather will aid Narromine Council’s efforts to finally get on top of grass growth on public land and roadsides in the Shire, Mayor, Councillor Craig Davies has said. “We defi nitely have some areas that need spruiking-up, but the roadside verges have
been that wet,” he said. “Some areas have been that drenched, that getting equipment on them is banking on the dangerous,” he added. He said that parks and garden crews have had to deal with not just wet weather, but a sudden increase in grass and weed growth brought-on by
the end of the big wet. “We do need dry weather, even now, some areas can’t be accessed. Just to dry things out,” he said. “Narromine has 1490km of roads in the Shire, and that’s a big area for us to cover.” Council however has taken a pro-active ap-
proach to the problem and invested more staff and resources to beating the mowing backlog. “We’ve built-up the number of road crews from three to five, we just need the opportunity get more done,” he said. “It will take-us 16–18 months to fi nally get on
top of it but, if we start now, the sooner we get the grass growth under control,” he said. Deputy Mayor, Cr Dawn Collins said that home-owners must also take reasonable steps to ensure that grass growth on their properties is also kept under control. “There’s a lot of vacant
blocks with unkempt grass on them,” she said.
“We can contact owners to remind them of the dangers that grassfi res can cause, even in builtup urban areas,” she said.

By DAVID DIXON RECENT reappointment of Narromine Shire Council’s general manager, Jane Redden, is a feather in the cap of the shire -mayor Craig Davies has said. Originally appointed in 2017, her contract extension has the mayor praising her contribution to the running of the 5264 km² local government area. “Jane has been there now for five years, and I consider Narromine shire to be very lucky to be able to employ someone of her ability,” Cr Davies said. “Our shire has gone ahead leaps and bounds, and it is reassuring that she also wishes to stay in the position,” he added. He added that extension of the gold mine at Tomingley, construction of the inland rail through the shire, and rising land and property values, indicates a bright future for the region. Ms Redden’s reappointment was passed at the December 2022 Narromine Shire Council meeting.

NARROMINE STAR Local News for the Narromine, Trangie & Tomingley region Thursday, February 2, 2023
New ranger is tasked with making local streets safe from dog menace TOO many streets in Narromine and Trangie have problems with unrestrained dogs menacing pedestrians, and Council has had enough! Recent appointment of a new ranger at Narromine Council, will see an increased emphasis of enforcement of dog ownership laws, Mayor, Councillor, Craig Davies has said. Speaking from hospital after minor surgery, Cr Davies said that locals should be free to walk every street or avenue in the Shire, without the threat of dangerous dogs. “We have got that problem, that some people are fearful to simply walk our streets because there are dogs on the
lose,” Cr Davies said. “It’s about protecting our community, in far too many areas, you can’t walk around without being threatened by pets that are not properly-restrained,” he added. He said that appointment of the new ranger in late last year, will see an enhanced emphasis on ensuring that the laws and regulations regarding canines, are enforced. “Particularly for owners of hunting dogs, they have an extra responsibility of keeping that pet in their yard at all times,” he said. “It’s just a few irresponsible owners, if they don’t look after them then they will lose
them,” he said. Acting Mayor, Cr Dawn Collins said that now is also the time when ill-considered purchases of pets at Christmastime, often start to become a problem. “Pets are a responsibility; they are not toys that can be discarded. This is just an ongoing reminder that when you get pets, you must take all steps to ensure that their pet is registered and looked after,” Cr Collins said. “We have an animal pound and a new ranger who was appointed in December, and we will enforce all laws as required,” she added.

Australia Day celebrations IT was a pleasure to participate in Australia Day celebrations in Warren and Coonabarabran this year. It’s always wonderful to see our communities come together on Australia Day, to celebrate those people who contribute so much to our towns and villages, and to welcome our newest Australian citizens. Coonabarabran this year welcomed two new Australians, while one person took the oath to become an Aussie in Warren. They joined dozens of others across the electorate who took this significant step to become a part of our great country. Congratulations to all of our new Australian citizens, as well as all of those deserving individuals and groups who received an Australia Day award this year. Thank-you for all you do in helping make our communities the great places they are. This year we also had seven individuals recognised in the Australia Day 2023 Honours List, including: f Dr Sally Torr (Bourke), who became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to healthcare administration, and to the community of Western NSW. f Susan Brookhouse (Coonabarabran), who received

Macquarie Home Stay expansion funded LAST week, I was thrilled to hear that the NSW Liberal and Nationals government, had stepped-up to provide the $2.5 million required for the much-needed expansion of Macquarie Home Stay in Dubbo. This funding will expand the accommodation facility by an additional 26 units, which will make such a difference for so-many families in the Parkes electorate who need somewhere to stay while seeking medical treatment in Dubbo. It is, however, disappointing that the federal Labor government failed to recognise the importance of this vital project, despite my best efforts to reinforce the need to multiple Labor ministers. Over the past eight months, Labor has had every opporsidised fees, following the introduction of the new $1.3 billion Start Strong Affordable Preschool Program. Research has shown that pre-school is where the building blocks for lifelong success are established. It is vital that we can support families in accessing quality early childhood education. This year all NSW families will be eligible for: • up to $4220 per year in fee relief for three, four, and fiveyear-olds attending a community or mobile preschool, f up to $2110 per year in fee relief for four and five-yearolds attending pre-school in a long day care setting, on top of their Child Care Subsidy payment, and

tunity to honour the funding commitment I made prior to the May election, instead choosing to cut the only program under which this project could still be funded. It just goes to show a complete lack of understanding of the needs of our rural and regional communities, and proves Labor is tone-deaf when it comes to practical projects that can change people’s lives.
Boothenba Road upgrade opened IT was terrific to officially open the $8 million Boothenba Road upgrade in Dubbo last week along with state member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders, Dubbo mayor, Mathew Dickerson, and senator Tony Sheldon. I’m proud the former coalition government invested $2 million into this project, which has delivered significant safety improvements for trucks accessing the Dubbo Regional Livestock Markets – one of the busiest saleyards in NSW. As a cattle farmer myself, I know just what a difference a safe and reliable road can make when delivering livestock from the paddock to the saleyards, so it was great to see just how these upgrades are benefitting local producers and truck drivers.
Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, receiving a briefing from the SES about the flooding situation in Menindee. It’s going to take some time before the water fully recedes and people can get back into their flooded homes, but the volunteers on the ground are doing a great job assisting the community – thank-you to everyone who has worked tirelessly over the past few weeks. While in the Far West, I also caught up with Broken Hill mayor Tom Kennedy to hear how a $5 million Australian government grant will improve safety at the Broken Hill Airport, ultimately contributing to the major redevelopment of the outback airport which will play a key role in the silver city’s future growth.
Senate “Disaster Committee” formed
LAST week, I had the opportunity to visit the flooded Menindee to see how the community is going as the water starts to recede. I caught-up with the local NSW SES and NSW RFS crews, as well as Central Darling Shire Council administrator, Bob Stewart, and was given a helicopter tour to see the extent of the flooding.
A SENATE Select Committee on Australia’s Disaster Resilience, was appointed late last year to inquire into Australia’s preparedness, response, and recovery workforce models, as well as alternative models for disaster recovery. The committee will consider the role of the Australian Defence Force, volunteer groups, not-for-profit organisations, and state-based services, and the support required to

I encourage parents to speak to their service to fi nd out about accessing the Start Strong 2023 pre-school fee relief. Families enrolled in a community pre-school or long day care service, must complete a declaration form and nominate one service from which they would like to receive the fee relief.
women to get involved! There are 24 scholarships valued at more than $6000 each available to women to help develop their leadership skills. I know there are so many amazing women in our region, leading communities, businesses, and critical conversations – and we want to help those wanting to step up and do the same. I encourage anyone interested to fi nd out more on the Future Women website!
THE NSW Government has launched a new round of the Future Women Rural Scholarship Program to help women living in regional, rural, and remote NSW achieve their goals – and I’m encouraging our local

Communities across the Parkes electorate are not immune to disasters, as we’ve seen with recent flooding. I encourage individuals, community groups, organisations, and businesses, in the Parkes electorate, to make a submission to the Committee to provide advice, suggestions, or views, on how government responses to disasters can be improved. al hygiene products thanks to the NSW Nationals in Government! More than 4600 dispensers have been installed in public schools across the State to help young women overcome barriers in accessing menstrual hygiene products. Getting your period should not be a barrier to education – I want young women to feel comfortable knowing they have access to free sanitary products when they need, in their school. Evidence shows that providing sanitary items has a very positive impact on educational engagement and attainment, so we know this program is going to make a huge difference to the education of our students. Until next time, Dugald

Sport Whataboutscotty aims for Country Qualifier
RACING NG REPORT ORT By COLIN HODGES WELLINGTON trainer Karen McCarroll is preparing promising Whataboutscotty for a possible start in the Country Championship Qualifier at Mudgee, following the recent Bathurst meeting where the lightly-raced four-year-old, scored a second successive win. In the quest for a slice of the $150,000 prizemoney on offer, Karen has unveiled a secret weapon her brother, the former champion jockey, Greg Ryan, who retired from race-riding after a magnificent career which yielded more than 4300 winning rides. His retirement came after the Mudgee meeting in December 2020, where he rode his last winner, Without Shame, for Tamworth trainer, Sue Grills. Now busy helping his son, Isaac, with his arborist business in Dubbo, Greg instead of climbing aboard a saddle is nowadays climbing trees to lop branches with a chainsaw. As a qualified mechanic before he started his jockey apprenticeship aged 25, Greg is also kept busy with the maintenance and repairs of the trucks and other
equipment used in the business. “When Whataboutscotty started showing some promise, I casually mentioned to Greg, he might like to have a look at the horse,” Karen explained. “In late December, Greg came over from Dubbo and, after riding it (in trackwork), forecast Whataboutscotty had good prospects,” Karen revealed. “Since then, when he has time, Greg works the horse and offers his opinions as to the most-suitable race distances, and other knowledge from his vast experience” Karen added. During his occasional visits, Greg has also ridden work alongside Emily Stanley and assisted the youngster with improving her own riding skills, as she hopes to eventually become an apprentice jockey, like her brother, Dylan Stanley. “Although he likes helping-out, Greg makes it clear he has no intention to make a comeback as a jockey,” Karen explained. Before Whataboutscotty entered her stable, Karen had trained numerous handy gallopers including Huge Number, Smart Attire, and Lord Burghersh. Leased to Karen and her husband Stephen, by Peter Barry from Denman, Whataboutscotty was unplaced at Wellington and Coonamble, before going for a spell.
Resuming at Orange and with Dylan Stanley in the saddle, Whataboutscotty fi nished third in a field of 14 in a 1000-metre Maiden event won by Life’s A Party. Stepping up to 1400-metres at Dubbo in early January, Whataboutscotty, as a $15 chance, was well-ridden by Dylan Stanley, and ran home strongly on the inside to beat the favourite, Call Me Louis. Apprenticed to Wellington trainer Jim McMillan, Dylan the son of former jockey and now Wellington trainer Daniel Stanley has ridden 13 winners including four at Alice Springs and Darwin during a short-stay in the Northern Territory. The win at Bathurst was his fi rst in a heat of the “Rising Stars Series” which is contested Statewide by apprentice jockeys. Whataboutscotty (at $5.50) was given a great run by Dylan, who positioned his mount behind the leaders, before sprinting through an opening on the inside to win the 1300-metre event from Rupertson (Braith Nock at $5) and Heavenly Prophet (Ashleigh Stanley at $7). The $150,000 Central Districts Qualifier for the Country Championship, is scheduled for Mudgee in February, while the $150,000 qualifier for the Western Racing Association is scheduled for Coonamble in March.

SPORT Warm-ish weather hits Gerries Golf numbers LAST Saturday morning was really very warm, and this no doubt affected the reduction in playing numbers for the weekly Gerries Golf competition; especially in the Ladies’ division. Only five ladies took part in this round with the fi rst home, Vicki Gainsford with an excellent score of 27 points. The handicapper, no doubt, will have a close look at this score, Vicki! Runner-up in comp, was Gail White on 23. Well done ladies for some great golf! Once again, there was no winner of the ladies NTP (nearest-the-pin), however, Michelle Ashdown managed to collect the NAGA prize on 19 points. Twelve players faced the starter in the Mens’ division
with Bob Fletcher returning a very good score of 24 points to collect the major prize. Close behind in second place, was Ian Taylor on 23 points. Here again, there was no winner in the weekly NTP competition – there must be a good tally in the jackpot pools for these events. Col Shepperdson was, however, able to collect the NAGA prize for the Men on 15 points. There was no interest in the weekly Pool competition – they all must have been affected by the warm weather with no Pool games played for the fi rst time for this season. Next Saturday, the Ladies will be on the Back Nine, while the Men will play the Front Nine. See you all at 9.30 on the tee!

Good fields for weekend golf GOLFERS were out in force at the weekend for the local competitions at “Royal Narromine “. No doubt, the warmer weather and the fact there was not much else on in district, brought the players out in good numbers. On Saturday, the competition was an 18-Hole Individual Irish Stableford which attracted a field of 20 players. Winner on the day was Red Pallutto with a score of 76 with the runner-up Glen Smyth also on 76 – a couple of really good scores. The NTP (nearest-the-pin) on the third went to Ryan Richardson, with no winner on the 10th. The long drive on the 18th went to Doug Potter, while there was no winner of the jackpot prize on the day. Sunday also saw a good field of 20 players in a Two-Person Ambrose competition with the winners Rob
and Kath Williams with an excellent score of 58.5. Two pairs tied for second, with the countback declaring Duane Faro-Mann and Jayman Cleary, the winners with a score of 60.5. The unlucky losers in this case, were Tony Harding and Craig Duff also on 60.5. The long-drive on the First went to Dan Coen, while the NTP on the 10th went to Matt Brown and, on the Ninth, to Greg Barling. Attention now turned to the Business House competition played each Wednesday. With only six weeks left to play, there is a battle royal developing between the teams with, at the top of the leaderboard, “The Gerries” on 41 points, followed by team “Deep Divots” on 40 points and a tie for third between teams “NDT” and “Dozer Chicks” on 39. Last Wednesday, there were 58 players in Week 16 of
the event with the winning team “The Phantoms” with an adjusted score of 19.83. Individual winners on the day, were Andrew Mann 27, Brad Wallace 24, Henry Buttsworth 23, Betty Berryman 22, and Colin McKay, 22. The NTP winners were, on the Third, Jamie Roberts; the Ninth, Glen Smyth; the 10th, Peter Hutchinson; and the 17th, Betty Berryman. The long-drive on the First went to Vicki Gainsford while, on the 15th, A Davis was the winner. This is a real popular event with competition hotting-up as the season draws to a close. Next weekend, unless the meeting on Thursday changes, the events will be for Saturday, February 4, and 18-Hole Stableford and, on Sunday, February 5 a 4BBB Stableford. That’s it for another week – see you at the 19th!
Camaraderie and competition heats-up with Trangie mates WITH Mother Nature fi nally on-board, we managed to get a couple of outings of social bowls in, including the regular monthly game with the Trangie boys. Firstly, to Thursday though, where some 17 hardy souls braved the sweltering conditions for a good days’ play. At close of play and atop the podium, were the trio of Bill West, Des Lincoln, and Kevin Rider, with the runners-up cheque going to another formidable Triples combination of Tod Reed, Bruce Powyer, and Mark Hilder. Sunday Morning saw the Trangie lads join us for a morning of competition and camaraderie, with the results though, not the most im-
portant part of play. For the record, Doug Ferrari, Brett Young, and “Cuz” were afforded the prize for the day’s best-performed team, whilst Ross Wallace, Mark Smith, and David McNair picked-up the spoils for the runners-up spot. Later this month for all members, the clubhouse is the place to be, when our Annual Presentation of trophies and awards takes place. This will include a sausage-sizzle (of sorts) for all husbands, wives, partners, children, and guests but, to help with the catering, we need to know who is turning-up! To that effect, a nomination sheets (of sorts) has been placed on the noticeboard and it would help, if you
and/or your family are coming, to indicate sooner, rather than later. The Zone Triples and Fours in the Presidents Discipline will also be played at Narromine Bowling Club over two weekends in February with the Triples kicking-off on Saturday morning, February 4, and continuing right throughout the weekend via knockout until we have a winner. The following weekend, it will be the turn for all those who have entered the Fours Championships, commencing on Saturday morning, February 11 with a winner to be announced before close of play on Sunday. Narromine Bowling Club also has three entries contest-
ing the Triples on February 4, and just the one Fours squad lining-up the next weekend. The Clubs Annual Report is also now available for those members who wish to peruse the journey the club has undertaken in 2021/2022. Also on the Noticeboard, is the AGM Invitation to members. If any member wishes to include an item for discussion to be placed on the agenda or for nominations for the Board of Directors, these are now being called for. The First of our 2023 Club Championships are set to commence on Saturday, February 18 as well with the nomination sheets for the Club Fours been posted on the old Noticeboard. With just over

three weeks to get your teams together, sooner, rather than later, should be your trip to the Noticeboard. Along the same theme, the Nomination Sheet for the Club Triples has also been posted, so again check out the dates, get you teams in, and have a go! The Selectors (whoever they may be?) will also be picking our team for the opening round of pennants for Sunday, February 19. So, if you wish to play pennants for Narromine Bowling Club, get your name up on the Nom sheet to avoid missing the proverbial boat. Well, that’s it for me for this week, I hope to catch up with you up at the “BOWLY”!
