address | 1, Polyla str., Athens, Greece email | dimopoulos.pant@gmail.com mobile | +306937071034 web | issuu.com/pantelisdim flickr.com/pantelisdim My name is Pantelis and I am studying Architecture in the National Technical University of Athens, currently working on my thesis project. At first unsure about my choice of occupation - as pretty much any 18-year old asked to fill in a university application form - I have realized that, year by year, I am being more and more attracted and fascinated by the field of Architecture and everything which is even remotely close to it. I would describe myself as a person who likes to get challenged, and definitely a keen learner. Apart from Architecture, my other passions are photography, sketching and snowboarding. Objective Prove myself in a demanding working environment, be “architecturally useful, get to know new ways of thinking and living, enrich my perception about the metier of Architecture.

Building with Timber: From Design to Construction

RESIDENTIAL

Collective Housing for Plato’s Academy Academic 9th semester In collaboration with:

Supervising Professors:

Androutsopoulou Alexandra Tiniakos Fragkiskos Isaias Demetrios Karvountzi Valentini

Masterplan Plato’s Academy is a district of high historical importance for the city of Athens, equipped with a large -but neglected- park surrounding the archaeological site, while residential and industrial uses are dominant nearby. It is worth noting that it is in the state’s direct plans to reshape the area, with the imminent construction of the new Museum of the City of Athens which will be situated nearby. In this project, we were asked to inject social housing infrastructure , as well as propose a masterplan for the redevelopment of the park. We aimed at the lower income families which already populate the district, trying to avoid a gentrification of the area. In our proposal, we envisioned the residences as six longitudinal buildings-bars , deployed radially on the south side of the park, with the notional centre being the new Museum, which we placed on the north side. Simultaneously, we created a jagged axis of cultural interest parallel to the bars, running through the park and connecting it with the adjacent Athinon avenue, aiming to attract visitors.

9

The Bar Each bar is composed of five different housing typologies (30, 60, 90 and 120 sqm), which wrap around a central, open corridor on the 2nd level that provides ventilation and an unobstructed view to the park. The composition of the residences resembles that of a lego toy and creates a variety of terraces and open spaces along the bar. 10

11

Between the Bars The area between two adjacent bar is conceived as a paved road planted with trees, providing access to the park and at the same time giving the residences the desired level of privacy.

12

13

Section - Corridor Views The inner corridor creates a neighbourhood inside the bar and provides ventilation, natural light and an unobstructed view to the park and the New Museum.

14

15

16

General View Transverse arcades pervade the bar on the street level in order to facilitate pedestrian circulation, while the bar itself is elevated on a concrete podium to reinforce privacy of the ground level residences. The two-storey residences are cladded with a glass-steel curtain wall, indicating the distinction between the different typologies.

Plan of the new Square The aim of the studio was to conceptualize and redesign the new Klafthmonos Square, situated right in the heart of the Athenian city centre and in close proximity to the neoclassical Trilogy of the Hansen brothers. We identified the main problem to be the square losing its character as a public space and often being overlooked by the people passing by. We therefore adjusted our thought and design process accordingly, preserving at the same time as much of the vegetation and trees of the old square as possible. The main gesture of our synthesis was the introduction of two longitudinal red walls which encourage movement through the square and divide it in smaller areas, essentially scaling it down. One of these areas submerges in order to reveal the old Wall of Athens - discovered by former excavations under the square - also serving as an openair amphitheatre. We also designed a platform, elevated from the ground level and perpendicular to the red walls, which provides a clear view to the building of the University on Stadiou street. The platform, sheathed with a wooden deck, also serves as an open terrace for the new cafĂŠ of the square, placed in the little concrete tower in the middle.

21

The Red Walls Except for the marking and division of the sub-squares, the walls serve as a visual and pathing guidance. They also incorporate the elevator and ramp to the cafĂŠ and structurally support the platform.

What does a Museum of the city look like? Working once again around Klafthmonos Square, we had to conceive the New Museum of the City of Athens, in a corner site right next to the existing one. We reckoned that a Museum of the City must declare its presence in the cityscape but at the same time respect it, in a way. Therefore, we designed an imposing 20x20x20m. concrete cube filling the corner of the city block containing the reception, the concert hall, the circulation spaces and some secondary uses. The cube is penetrated by two longitudinal, steel-constructed volumes that contain the exhibition rooms, the library, restaurant and offices. The volume containing the exhibitions is slightly tilted above the ancient City Wall, in order to provide a better view to Klafthmonos Square and to mark the entrance to the building.

29

Inside the Cube Section model and sketch, showing how the cube partially serves as an inner void for the longitudinal volumes that penetrate it.

30

31

Structural Section In this project, we examined how a large-scale building like this could be built. We studied and brainstormed on the detailing and methods of construction. This is a 1:20 scale section of the building, demonstrating how the two different materials (concrete and steel) come together. 32

USE MIXED

Porto Pool Promenade Competition In collaboration with:

Androutsopoulou Alexandra Giannikopoulos Alexandros

36

Designing above water The theme of this competition was to re-evaluate the relationship of the city of Porto with its river, rio Douro. Participants were asked to generate a welcoming hub for urban and water activities on the river side, next to Luis I Bridge. The primary elements that we introduced in the landscape of rio Douro are three aquarium-like, rectangular shaped glass tanks, filled with water pumped directly from the river and then filtered and cleaned. The upper surface of each tank forms an urban pool, situated higher than the street level. Public spaces that are needed to support the program needs are conceived as “voids of water inside the tanks. This is expressed by creating free-form shaped spaces, inspired by pebbles or water bubbles. The pebbles are conceived as semi-transparent, allowing shadows of the people that swim on the upper level to be visible from beneath. The glass facades of the water tanks themselves revoke an aquarium, enlarged to reach the human scale. Structurally, the whole system is founded onto the river bottom. Mechanical equipment for the pools(pumping and filtering the water) could be placed under the last slab of each of the pebbles.

37

38

The Pebbles The pebbles are inserted in the tanks, creating a juxtaposition between the strict rectangular forms and the flowing shape of the water voids. Pebbles exceeding the boundaries of the glass tanks are cut out in order to provide access from the ramp network that we introduce adjacent to the wall. Some of them are cut from both sides, creating open-air spaces overlooking the river. Filling the water tanks creates “islands on the surface of the water, artificial beaches for the users of the pools. The islands are accessible through the upper level of the pebbles, via stairs and elevators for the disabled. Entering the pebbles from the street level is possible through bridges that connect the former to the latter.

39

Street View The ramps and platforms between the water tanks and the wall of the river bed provide easy access for bicycles and for disabled people. The ramps also provide connection with the commercial/tourist area on the other side of the bridge.

Europe on the Ionosphere Workshop - Competition 1st place - to be built

In collaboration with:

Androutsopoulou Alexandra Tiniakos Fragkiskos Thoma Despo

Supervising Professors:

Caradimas Costas Katsaros Miltiadis Tsakanika Eleftheria

The Workshop The Hellenic Radioamateur Team asked NTUA to design a small, temporary pavilion to accomodate the 48-hour event “Europe on the Ionosphere, during which people from every European capital would be able to communicate with each other for a few minutes, with the help of radio equipment and an operator. On this occasion, the School launched a workshop, in which 17 student teams participated, presenting 17 different proposals for the pavilion. The winning proposal would be built in 28 copies in Greece and then transported to every European capital. After two votings from the supervising professors and the student teams, we took first place and were asked to deepen our design and thinking, in order to meet the demands of the construction phase. Our proposal was inspired as a form by the shape of a radiophone, aimed to communicate the theme of the event. Moreover, we had to take into account many different factors such as climate (differentiated from country to country), sustainability, reusability, transport ,assemblage and building regulations. 44

The pavilion has a polyhedral, trapezoid shape, resembling that of an old radiophone. Two of its sides are left open in order to allow for natural ventilation and sunlight, but at the same time the rest are sealed, protecting the equipment from natural phenomena such as rain and snow. Timber was chosen as the main building material, which helped achieving the goals of sustainability, easy assemblage and relatively low transport weight and cost. A very thorough instruction booklet was prepared for the construction and assemblage, in which every joint, connection and part was carefully designed and described.

47

48

Postlude After a painful and extremely time-consuming studio in which many students from the other teams helped in order to meet our deadline, we were unfortunately informed that the pavilion would not be constructed due to funding and planning problems from the clients. What we earned from this workshop, besides the designing experience on timber structures, was the acquaintance with the construction phase of the architectural work, which is very often overlooked during the academic education of an Architecture student. We also came into communication with professionals from other fields (civil engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, timber building constructors) and faced practical factors such as time, cost and client needs. All of those bits surely broadened our horizons as aspiring new architects.

“City Beacon” Competition In collaboration with:

Androutsopoulou Alexandra Tiniakos Fragkiskos

52

6m2 of city The pavilion was conceived as a section through the city, where elements and images -contemporary or not- of the city of Athens are represented: fragments of urban memory. The main design gesture is to place two C-shaped, timber-frame panels on the sides of a corridor-void, representing the two opposite facades of a typical narrow Athenian street. Openings for door and window are designed on the inner facades. Traditional wooden doors and blinders found on post-war or neoclassical Athenian buildings are to be fitted on those openings, completing the image of a miniature, contemporary Athens. To this image contribute the analog television, the antenna and the solar panel (solar heater). The visitor has the option to interact with the pavilion while walking through the inner corridor-alley.

Connection Details As with the “Europe on the Ionosphere” pavilion, we had to think about the construction details, given the complex nature of timber parts and joints. Presented here are the connections of the panels, the steel rods and the solar panel which provides the pavilion’s electrics and electronics with sustainable energy.

Audiograveur Academic 9th semester In collaboration with:

Supervising Professors:

Moutevelis Ioannis Naki Marina Tiniakos Fragkiskos Papalexopoulos Demetrios

62

Birth of the Audiograveur The device was inspired by the innovative sculptor Jean Tinguely. It aims to be a moving sculpture, a beautiful machine. As an extra challenge, we also added the factor of interactivity. The main idea can be defined as the effort of a graphic display of sound through the analysis of two of its elements, volume and frequency. The model consists of two discs, revolving around their axes. The two discs are connected with a linear element, which is mounted on the larger disc. A marker is positioned near the edge of the rod.

63

Arduino Definition

Grasshopper Definition

64

How it works The computer microphone collects sound stimuli from the environment. In Grasshopper (Rhino 3D plug-in) an algorithmic code is generated and via Firefly (Grasshopper plug-in) the value variation of the frequency and volume is analyzed. According to these values the movement of the DC motors is adjusted by the ARDUINO, as the first motor simulates the volume and the other the frequency. The motors set the two discs in motion and thus, the combination of their spins forms the movement of the rod and consequently the creation of the graph.

Building with Timber: From Design to Construction Dissertation Project 9th semester

In collaboration with:

Tiniakos Fragkiskos

Supervising Professors:

Caradimas Costas Tsakanika Eleftheria

68

Summary This paper constitutes, in principle, an effort to investigate the process of building with timber, through the drafting of a manual, presenting and analyzing design and construction problems, limitations and other factors associated with the use of wood as a building material. It is therefore not interested in the simple enumeration of structural engineering laws, physical properties of wood and “theory” in general, but in how all these relate to the architect. It tries to prove that, when using timber as a structural material, the construction method provides feedback to the architect’s design and vice versa, and that the detailing is not only a structural necessity but also, main architectur-

al expression. After making a brief historical overview, it presents some basic principles and a general methodology that should be in the mind of someone who designs with timber for the first time, sorting these principles based on some factors interwoven with the nature of wood and its materiality. Finally, it goes from theory to practice, highlighting these principles as they are applied through two examples of buildings which make use of timber as building material. One of those is the “Europe on the Ionosphere” pavilion, presented before.

69

70

“Europe on the Ionosphere” vol. 2 We re-presented the pavilion from a less technical point of view and used it to describe what it means to design in timber from the architect’s perspective. 71

άυλη διαδικασία

Verdict When it comes to timber, design, the intangible process of the architectural synthesis, is directly interwoven with the construction, the transition from two to three dimensions, which is the architect’s ultimate goal. The path from design to construction is thus not a linear one, but a path that is constantly fed by new data and concerns, that beginning and end are equally important but not distinct sections. 72
