The location of the Sports_hub is outside of the City in a residential area.

The task was to design a Sportshall for multifunctional use. It was meant for sportsevents, just as music events, but also for regular sportsclasses for daily disposition.

Concept The multifuntionality should be read and understood especially through the structure of the building. Therefore it was necessary to develope a column unsupported floorplan, to be able to put funcional boxes inside. The sportshall itself is serperated in different zones which can be combined in different alternatives. Zones just as the eventzone or the active zone work for itself but also together.

Site The Bendplatz is a huge area close to the Trainstation Aachen West and it offers enough space for events, such as trade fairs, circus or fleamarkets. Their is going to be a new planned Campus West of the RWTH Achen which enables the region to get a new face. So far it is dominated by middle class multifamily Housing and a big industrial area.

The K端hlwetterstreet is a Street in th livingarea without any specicic impact. The Roemonderstreet is a kind of cultural lane with museaums, exibitions and restuarants. Those three axis should be combined by the design and allow each of them to make profit out of it.

Concept

The design has its focus on how you enter the living area. The stream of the roads is created by the polygonal structure, that leads the view of the pedastrians into the Inside of the structure. The concept is based on differenty shapes innecourts with different qualities for Inner and Utter use.

There are three axis which are framing the Bendplatz. The S端sterfeldstreet in the West, the K端hlwetterstreet in the South and the Roemonderstreet in the East. Each of these streets has its own function and has an impact on the neighbouring areas. The S端sterfeldstreet follows the line of the Campus West and therefore will be offering Service for the RWTH with bakeries, bookshops, and copyshops.

In the end, the Bendplatz should represent the pending heart of aachen west.

The Botel consists of moduls, whose simplicity in form generates the feeling of security. The movement of the form embraces the visitor, such as the circulation, on which he is walking. This interface leads them together and creates a carpet out of vertical footbridges and perpendicularly situated cabines.


construction Structure The load-bearing behavior of the structure is ralated to a plane load-bearing structure. The analogy to a double-jointed frames gives the assumption of a similar moment curve at the rounded frame. Related to a construction of a ship , it is nessecary to work against the horizontal forces from the water. Therefore additional frames should embrace the form from inside and hold the system together.

The construction of the shellsystem is solved by intergral components whose geometrical joints in form of springs and grooves are always above the water level. An EPDM-strip is glued between the components in the position of the spring and the flat steel . In addition, a screw should secure the structure. For putting the screw it is nessecary to open the concret shell partly. The recess can be replaced by a lamp and generates the final completion of the construction. The Material concrete will be supported by textiles to reduce its weight in relation to the volume down to its minimum, so that the modul can swimm on the water.

Concept of modular structre Segments of the footbridge are pile-founded and hight-adjustable. The prefabricated Cabine- and Bathmodules will be transported to the shore and build together there. At the shore 2 Cabines and 1 bath will be put together to a complexe. Those unities will be shipped to the fixed segments until the net of cabines is threaded

Details for a flexible structure The solution for an optional extenstion of the structure is joining the cabines with a flexible but also water-resistentsystem. The idea is taken from the articulate busses.

A flexible joint between the water resistent units is solved by axle bearings.



„like a carpet on the water “ The rational structure in the overviewplan gets a totally different impression in the perspective view. The juts and recesses create different grayscales make a new pattern out of the stiff structure - it reminds of a relief that is moving on the water „when two elements become one“ Architecture and Water , two elements of beauty meet each other in one interface and become something new. The architecture respects the element of water and bows down to its given forces.The outcome is even better than without.

Music House

Site The object is located in Cracow, the capital of Littlepoland, a voivodship of South Poland. Cracow is a centrical organized city with an Old Town in the center, surrounded by ringroads. The loccation of the object is next to the railways which appeared to become a challange in the new design. Conept Cracow is a very historical city with a high artistical value. Preservating and emphasizing this value is the focus of this project. Design The existing building used to be the storage for the Juliusz SĹ‚owacki Theater. It is located on the Radziwillowska street in Cracow, next to the railways. The building is under protection because of its material and nonmaterial values that should be respected and involved in the new design of the building. The new function of the building will be a music house for students of the music academy. They can practise in the upper floors and relax on the roof top terrace. Besides that, the building can be used for concerts, exibitions and other events. It is desiged for mulitfunctional use. According to its materiel value, the preservation of the whole fassade, which is made out of bricks and fresques is of primary importance. As it used to serve as a storage for the most important theater in Cracow, it gains a high immateriel value and should be maintained in the new use.


Concept

Despite there should be somehow a connection between the two parts. The fassade of the new building refers to the old one, by using the same pattern of brickstones. Even if it is in concrete, it creates a context between the old and the new part and stresses the value of the old building. Also the big arched windows of the walls are exposed freely so that they can be appreciated by the visitors. Besides they frame the beautifu landscape from the back of the buiding. The scuptue is composed in two L-shaped frames which bear all the new rooms for permanent use like rehearsal rooms, concert halls and exibitionarea.Two long legs with the communicationsystem, administration and toilets join those parts and complete the continuous loop. The open space in between is flexible in use and meant for temporary events like big concert or dancing events. Therefore it is possible to change the level of the floor and to pull out the tribune of the wall.

Following the box-in-box principle, the new part is put independantly inside of the old brick walls. There is a remarkable distance between the old walls and the new sculpture. That gesture shows the historical distance in time. Also the use of different materials for the new part is underlining that aspect.

Szenario 1 shows a concert with stage and a pulled out tribune, that is storaged inside the wall Szenario 2 shows a gala with completely pulled up floor.

The construction of the sculpture is solved by reinforced concrete. The idea is to use prefabricated concrete shells with crossing reinforcment and to pore in the concrete right on the constructionsite. The reinforcement of all elements, such as floor ceiling and walls are connected with each other, so that everything is stable within itself like a box.

The construction for holding the roof is solved by I beam frames, which are also partly pierced through the construction walls of the sculptur. For better accustics, the inner construction of I beams is covered by glass.

The roof is meant for public use. It offers a big area for the students to recover in between their recess. Along the brick walls is sturctul glazing meant for walking just as for illuminating the interior.

Design The cultural center offers a big range of cultural, functional, religious, educational, specific but also daily programms. Kosmopolis, that is how it is called is a meeting point for everybody, who is coming with his own intentions and needs and in the end he is meeting unexpected other people. Just like in a city. Therefore the building is organized like a city and is following its principles by using different kinds of boundaries. On the roof, there is a route architectural, which joins the two different levels of the topography and also involves the pedestrians. They can look inside the building or simply enjoying the view from the terrasses. During the walk on the roof the visitors get invited to enter the builidng through its many entraces, just like in a city, that you can enter from different sides.

The main axis through the building is a linear 5 meter wide path, that ads to all public areas in its different hights.

Three transverse achsis are crossing that road as entrances for different purposes. The first transerse achsis is the entrance for the public library, that should be operating independant from the cultural center. The second achsis holds the main entrance for the building and gathers the people in a big foyer, the center of the cultural building. The parapet on the Rooftop is supposed to function as top pull , holding the structure walls together just as a cantilever. The floors span in between. The big span requires a parapet hight of 145 cm. Therefore a double floor is used to reduce the hight up to 90 cm and for dewatering the roof.

Research, Design and Construction of a stool

3D Printing in Furnituredesign

Design

The stool project is focussed on a fast prototyping and fast manufacturing process of a seating furniture by the use of a 3D Printer. In order to do an inovation, it was important to use the 3D printer for a unique conjunction, that is taking profit out of the printing process. The combination of the printed joints and other materials just as metall, wood or other textiles was tested and documentated. In order to make a conclusion how we can apply the 3D printing process in furniture design it was nessecary to recognize the possibilities and also the limitation of the process. Our intention was to design a screwless stool in order to build it up and dismantel it very fast. Therefore all the joint are 3d printed and have specific profiles to fix to the aluminum pipes. The upper joints have a kind of head which has to be put through the milled wooden board and twisted around, so that a screw-free junction is possible. Finally Caps should avoid that the joints twist out.

IASS Symposium Contest „The 2015 IASS Symposium organizers invited universities to participate in a contest and exhibition of structurally innovative pavilions.The pavilions had to give a future vision on structural design and innovation and had to be the outcome of structural research.It is our ambition to have an exhibition that shows new insights on structural typologies in the design of a pavilion.The pavilions are exhibited in that summer of 2015 and during the 2015 IASS symposium in the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.The exhibition will be opened at the end of the Holland Festival in June 2015.“ iass2015.org The structure is based on a four-fold origami pattern, i.e. four creases are concurring to each vertex of the pattern, and therefore presents a single degree of freedom. Thus, an easy and controllable actuation of the whole structure is possible. The sculpture is designed to be suspended from the roof, with an interposition of an intermediate horizontal frame. A slight perturbation can be induced by pulling a cord, thus enabling the structure to oscillate in a simple harmonic motion, from a folded to an unfolded state, back and forth. Due to the distinct design of the planar facets, the motion of the realized construction follows the same kinematics of a folded nonthick paper sheet. The lightweight design of the facets is based on a folded core structure of vacuumformed polycarbonate sheets. Two opposing inner layers with pyramidal embossments serve as spacer between the outer layers. The foldability of the relatively thick panels is ensured by a crystallinelike shaping, which also prevents the structure to stuck into its dead center.

High Architecture - Low Carbon The task was to develope an ecofriendly and removable fassade. Our primary structure is a beam-and-post system with push-fit-brackets for a rapid assambly and disassambly. The secondary structure consists of modular frames, which can be either glaezed or thermally insulated with transulent insulation. The Insulation is designed by recycled plasttic trash, that can be easily filled and refilled in the zip bags. The aim was to use recyling materials and develope a system that can be produced in serie.

* A place for children and young adults. A place for music, dance and performance. An extension of Guga S’Thebe arts and cultural centre. *

Together with the assistance of future users, me and other students of Architecture design, planned and built a multipurpose centre for the youth in the township Langa in Cape Town. Guga S’Thebe is a cultural centre that was developed after the end of apartheid in the 1990s in Langa, the oldest township of Cape Town. It attracts local children, youth and artists as well as international tourists. For the community of Langa, Guga S’Thebe is an unique chance to experience art and culture as well as an international dialogue. Over the years the work with children and young adults, who are instructed by local teachers and artists, became a main focus of the cultural centre. Outside of school, away from an often difficult situation at home, a place for learning, music, play and creativity is unique in Langa.At present a multifunctional space for the numerous dance, music and theatre performances is urgently needed. The successful work with children in drum lessons, dance workshops and public concerts will be supported and extended by the new building. A combination of singular rooms for playing music in small groups and a large multipurpose space that can host performances and concerts will widen the experiential possibilities for children and young adults and stimulate the sustainable development within the community. As Cape Town will be World Design Capital in 2014, the process of building with international students, local artists and the community of Langa can become part of the event. The aim is to create an innovative building through participation, social integration and the implementation of recycled materials. In workshops with children and young adults, spaces can be designed with which their ‘designers’ can identify themselves and where they feel safe.
