I n t r o d u c t i o n

This Architecture Portfolio shows selected works from the university and early professional experiences. Through the years I have focused my attention on the relationship between architecture and society, getting interested on how urban space ought to be shaped in current complex cities and how people use it. Moreover, clear representation and design are elements I always take care of when a project has to be explained, that also because I find interesting the word of exhibitions, art and photography. Finally, what I really like is sharing experiences and knowledge, being an active member in planning and designing teams, and continuing in learning, taking part in workshops, lessons and events.

Plus Belle de Mai analyses the third arrondissement, one of the most marginalized districts in Marseille. Although it has been involved in some renovation projects, it is still cut out of the city by both phisical and social barriers and marked by high unemployment and poverty rates. The project enquires into a model to reactivate an area by increasing its attacctiveness without triggering a gentrification process. In which way urban and architectural planning are contribuing to improve life and evirormental quality in socially damaged context? 6

The stratgey is developed by following two main purpose. The firts aims to create new links between the different realities which are part of the area by reactivating the

public space, rethinking inner mobility and redesigning abandoned buildings. The second focuses on enhancing the connections between the area and the rest of

the city: specific gloals to achieve this purpose include facilitating the accessibility, developing the smart mobility and creating a new green urban infrastructure.

MACRO-ACTIONS

Legend of strategical actions Requalify the tunnel in Blv National as a new connection with the center Create new access for the station

New T4 line of tram on Blv National Link existing cycleway with new path and entroduce bike-sharing stops

Connective spaces The first macro-action provides the area with a cyclo-pedestrian networks, so as to bring together the moltitude of tiny public spaces which are daily used by the population and to reduce the vehicular traffic. The network will spread across the arrondissement’s border, connecting it with other important social spaces and pushing the inhabitants to explore thier own city.

Convert the old trin line a new tramtreno route Requialify the empty green areas around the old train line New central park in the barrak area New ceNew centralities with better urban furniture and services

New parking area in order to make pedestrian path free from cars Intervention on sections’ streets

Increase the existing systems like Frische La Belle de Mai, the University Aix-Marseille and parks all around

Linear park The second macro-action concerns the reconversion of the railway path that crosses the area into a tram-train system, which will connect the old town with the new districts planned in the northern part of Marseille. Along the tram-train a linear park, provided with sports and leisure equipments, will foster social interacions and cyclo-pedestrian mobility.

Convert the Muy Barrrak area in a new services Pole for inhabitants and students.

The Muy Barrack The last action involves rethinking the abandoned area, once occupied by military barracks. The new project aims to create new community spaces complying with the population’s need of services, like schools, libraries and sport facilities. The conecpt of social “mixitè” is really important for this part, as this action means to create new bounds between people with different social backgrounds. 9

Connective spaces

The cyclo-pedestrian way connects different spaces requalified thanks to: 1. re-activation of social relations and differenciated uses of the squares. 2. new section for the main roads giving more importance to the slow mobility and using vegetation as a fondamental instrument to requalify spaces. 3. Create synergy between already existed systems changing functional programs open to the people of the arrondissement first of all.

Linear park

The linear park uses an abandones railway path in order to give the people a new park; it is characterised of being different in the functions it offers, and fisically open to the arrondissement. Thanks to that, it won’t be anymore a break but a shared space.

regional center of digiital and musical culture The project takes place in Don Benito’s main square, a Spanish village in Estremadura. Part of Europan 2012 , this square is currently covered in concrete and used as a parking lot – right next to the local cathedral. The project aims first and foremost to valorise the square and the church and therefore the whole historical context behind them, while connecting the square itself to the surrounding roads and alleyways. Road access is therefore paramount and new paving has been thought out for each of the aforementioned roads and alleyways. Whi14

urban strategy for the rehabilitation of M’Hamid Nuevo

This project concerns M’Hamid Nuova, a town in the Southern region of Drâa in Morocco. The project aims to improve the agricultural and tourist economy of the villages surrounding M’Hamid Nuova, where the sand advancement and the drop in tourism, lead the local oasis to being forgotten and abandoned by those who worked in it, as they now emigrate North in search for work. In the town of M’Hamid Nuova itself, the project focused more on urban planning. 20

3. Give specific characteristics to different turistic paths in order to have the turists’ interest

Increase turism and trade between the 10 little village

4. Find other market place in the new andold village and give to women possibility to take care to their own businness.

In the urban strategy, take a very important role both the main paths and the pedestrian ones, just because for real they’re the only way to pass through the village and the desert. Along the river was necessary a green line composed of vegetable gardens and sand walls in order to contain the river’s growth. At last, on the east part, near the historical city often due to be drowned, there’s the craft market owned especially by women.

UNIVERSITY Monument Renovation Workshop 1. 2015 Arch. Prof. M. Zuppitoli Ferrara, Italy

New stairs block in Palazzo Tassoni The restoration project concerns the ancient mansion belonging to the noble Tassoni family in Ferrara. Part of this building was recently refurbished to host the Department of Architecture. Another part of the building is still heavily in decay and thus unused. The renovation project sees a restoration of the walls (both interior and exterior) through coating and whitening, leaving the staircase the only new addition to the structure, which has been placed in a strategic point fit to the needs of the Department of Architecture. 24

WORKSHOP

Universud workshop 2015 Prof R. Farinella, Prof A. Alietti, Visiting Professor Marcello Balbo, Camillo Boano Ferrara, Italy

U N I V E R S U D UNIVERSUD is an italian association of young architects and students based in Ferrara promoting events and research on urban informality and urbanisation processes. We work with professors, Universities, students, researches and citiziens. Our main interest is to make people informed and conscious about how cities are changing so far and how they can be part active and not passive of it. We are currently working on “INFORMAL.MENTE“, an expo project about informality and citymaking which includeS photography, physical installations, audiovisual projects, urban performances and much more. 28

First edition LIMITI URBANI The first real experience was a four-day workshop with the theme of URBAN INFORMALITY named “Limiti Urbani” (urban bourders). The aim was to make students from different part of Italy meeting together and talk about what border mean today, especially in informal contest like in Mexico or Argentina. Participated important teachers like Camillo Boano (Bartlett university, London), ASF Veneto and Marcello Balbo (IUAV, Venice).

Collaborators: Lorenzo Balugani, Dario Caruso, Matilde Mozzi, Simona Basile, Simone Cardullo, Giulia Malesani, Giuliana Liscio, Andrea Bit, Margherita Miani, Nicolò Preghiera, Chiara Ferioli.

pavillion

Mention prize. The urban site is one of the numerous military barracks that characterize Piacenza’s territory. The aim of the intervention is to connect this not-used barrack in the first periphery with the city center. This area borders with an important street, an ancient pilgrimage route. Thus, it’s crossed both by cars and by pedestrian directed to the center of the Roman-foundation city. The ancient military barrack became a new place linked to the city with adaptable function for all the type of users. The keywords are: territory, sustainability, low impact. 30

The project of the air pavilion starts from three main concept: lightness, permeability, air. AIR is the concept; the building stands upon thin white pillars, there are quite no lateral walls in order to make the building crossable by the air and by trees’ branches.

The idea is to provide the Camping of other three different typologies of rural housing in the middle of the forest. The cottage can be for two, three or four people, has a view from the outside and in a little space can satisfied all client’s requests. Talking about the construction system, it is made basically by wood , in order to be cheap, sustainable and reversible. 32

The project of the Apnabi Center takes care firstly about the position, near the highway and in an anonymous recent housing contest, and secondly it has been shaped thinking about the person how will occupy the building. In fact, it is going to be a center for limited movements and deficiency in hearing and seeing. So, the project wants to give relevance to vegetation and gardens because they both can help people in learning and curing. 34

As a result, the project wants to give priority to a green and public system , housing of quality generating a new district which can give the people all the goos they need. What’s is more important is to generate the real urban conditions able to increate an effetive potencial in the district and connect it with the other strong elements the area has. 36
