Sustainability

Integration

Architecture and Interior design are a crucial part of corporate identity and a phyisical representation of the firm’s values. They define the company’s image and market placement as much as all corporate identity aspects. Therefore, the main goal of the project is to reinforce the company’s philosophy and objectives by creating a space that effectively represents them.

Designing for people is the key concept behind all aspects of the project. The primary objective is to provide an effective response and sensibility with regards to human needs, designing quality space, and within sustainable and comfortable environments where people can live and work pleasantly.

Sustainability is not an abstract concept, but an easily perceivable value. In order to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact, an optimisation of efficiency and of available resources is essential. Achievable objectives only through a rationalisation and simplification of proposed design solutions, especially when dealing with office space, where flexibility, and the ability to personalise and reconfigure easily are essential requisites for a successful project. Space, considering its materials and energy consumption, is not infinite, and there a precious and expensive resource.

Already starting from the initial phases, the team incorporates an integrated approach with a multiprofessional viewpoint to all the project’s aspects, also using external specialist consultants if necessary. The result is a balance of each discipline as applied to the project, providing the Client with the best design options possible. Only in this way, can we assuredly monitor all project variables, such as expected quality, meeting deadlines, and cost efficiency.

paolomanteroarchitetto

BNL Acting as the core of an ambitious renovation project of the surrounding area, nested upon the New High Speed Railway Station, the interior design project for the New BNL Roma Tiburtina Headquarters holds ‘Culture’ as its highest value, capable of spurring both innovation and professional growth, while simultaneously creating profit. The project underlines the importance knowledge has to BNL by offering services and solutions which are tailored to suit the needs of both individual employees and the company they work for. A new, wideopen space, capable of accomodating almost 4,000 people, both workers and guests. A small ‘working city’, featuring all the necessary assets and commodities for social and communal life,

11

paolomanteroarchitetto

such as a Restaurant, a Bar, an Auditorium, a Kindergarten, and internal BNL Subsidiary -acting as a bridge between the company and the rest of the world, and promoting a radical change in the company’s policy: from the ‘culture of Banking’ to ‘the bank of Culture’. Ample hybrid areas set between working and relax spaces, cozy and comfortable, will allow for a pleasant and productive workspace, as employees will feel their personal needs and necessities are cared for by their employers. The project was developed with sobriety and rationality in mind, which are distinctive traits of the BNL brand, while eco-compatible and sustainable materials

and resources are employed in all aspects of interior spaces design. Figurative arts, paintings, sculptures, literarture, design and everything falling within the boundaries of’culture’ has the power to enrich people and allows for their personal and professional growth, which is the company’s ultimate goal. Creativity, beauty and ‘culture’ will resonate throughout every facet of the project.

DIESEL

21

paolomanteroarchitetto

Diesel 65,000 square metres of pure creativity, immersed in the Venetian country side: offices, restaurants, bar, gym, childcare centre and an auditorium surrounded by continuous landscape, including an immense vegetation wall incorporated into the reception, guaranteeing quality towards facility employees and offering quality spaces for concentration, health and breaks at all times during the day. By using space planning criteria and effective solutions for interior design strategies, we contributed towards achieving sustainability for the project, guaranteeing flexibility and the possibility to reconfigure spaces in harmony with ecology, comfort and appeal. Systems, such as lighting, heating/cooling and automation, were highly coordinated to work with the interior’s architectural design and office layout, offering a general quality

23

paolomanteroarchitetto

of services and architectural space which are sometimes difficult to achieve with projects of these dimensions. For the first-time visitor, the sensation one has when inside this building (not with standing its vastness) is the sense of humanscale, comfort and the feeling of being welcomed, with intimate corners and areas where one can find “refuge”, when the bustling starts to intensify. This concept is consistent with Mr. Rosso’s initial idea and what he always had imagined. The result, as the images suggest, is a sequence of spaces with few, simple rules always expressing (at all areas) the “product”, with a creative explosion of colour and extravagance which are, without question, quintessential aspects of Diesel as a brand. 25

JACOBS

29

paolomanteroarchitetto

Jacobs Simplicity was the main objective for this rehabilitation design project. Simplicity brings with itself rationality, flexibility and space Identity. Jacobs, as a global Engineering leader, desired for its headquarters, functionality and sobriety. These are values which are coherent with the company’s philosophy, leaving very little concessions to the interior designer. The eternal dilemma of form vs. function finds an equilibrium by designing space to directly address functions which provide and generate an office environment, where series and repetition (essential towards cost optimisation and flexibility) become an advantage while perceiving space in terms of its architecture and interior design. Ordinary sequence of the interiors of open space on one side, and closed space on the other, perfectly interpret the idea of project

31

paolomanteroarchitetto simplicity. Natural and artificial light are integrated within the space, offering quality and comfort, while measured use of colour in common spaces mixed with working areas having white and lightwood, create a modular equilibrium and harmony to the continuation of spaces. This effect is not only pleasing to the everyday user, but also to the visitor as seen from the outside. Interior walls, whose play with transparency, amplifies the perception of space, helping internal communication levels, and permit natural light to penetrate in at the lowest levels of the building. This provides a considerable reduction of energy need with regards to artificial lighting. UNIFOR

35

paolomanteroarchitetto

Unifor showroom The new Uniform Showroom is located within an old industrial building in Prague. Its design was coordinated so that it should represent the image of all Unifor showrooms. The interiors are laid out in a 200 square metre space, designed to offer both a refined and functional exposition area. Suspended floors in wood which become a bench on the side, represent slightly the idea of an Ark: capable of abstracting itself from the building which it finds itself in, offering different arrangement scenarios, and at the same time conserving the company’s identity through time and space.

TECNOCAR

41

paolomanteroarchitetto

Tecnocar The client’s objective for this project was to reuse an old industrial warehouse from the 1960’s, and adopt it to become its new headquarters, efficient and compact, incorporating a sustainable approach to the design and highly limiting costs. The design idea was simple, and almost mandatory. It called for intervening on the interior courtyard’s façade, where the entrance was located. Its large internal volume with double floor spaces was recuperated, rekindling the building’s potential in uniting effectively the administrative functions with those of logistics and the warehouse. Chosen materials, wood for façades and stone for external flooring, underlines the need to value the highest expressions of architecture: form, function, atmosphere and environmental compatibility. Wood and stone, carriers of ancient

43

paolomanteroarchitetto emotions and memory, are re-interpreted to reflect a contemporary language, universally comprehensible. New openings create a strong synergy between closed and open spaces, transforming the faรงades into a sort of interface with dynamic articulation of interior and exterior areas. Interior light, available through large windows, transparent partitions and through a regular distribution of spaces, favours an increase in production and at the same time, protects the investment as time goes by from a business point of view. DENTADENT

49

paolomanteroarchitetto

Dentadent A new way to conceive a dental clinic, and at the same time, generate spaces needed for health assistance. The concept developed for new Dentadent clinics, recently built at the Oriocenter in Bergamo, revolutionised the image and spaces of the old, dental clinic. Christened “Smile with us, as this reflects the slogan we came up with for Dentadent, and this is also our philosophy which we adopted for the project’s idea: to make you feel at home, away from fears and discomfort which normally occur when a patient arrives at the dentist. The main idea, which is the corner stone of this project, was to conceive the spaces so that patients arrive in an environment that resembles a luxury boutique, offering diagnostics and wellness to the patient. An innovative model in terms of image, reception, materials, furnishings, and technological solutions incorporated. 51

MEDTRONIC

55

paolomanteroarchitetto

Medtronic Light, transparency, heat, and liberty are concepts which have inspired the project for this new headquarters for Metronic in Milan. This company invented the first battery-run pacemakers, and since then, has become a global leader in technology and the medical industry. Based on our specifications of space planning and interior design, this building was completely conceived for Medtronic. The image and corporate identity of the company communicate through both internal and external working areas. The large, common break area provides a good idea of the project’s philosophy: eliminating hierarchic, physical and mental boundaries between company resources, from the CEO to all levels of employees. This space also provides an adequate environment needed for both relaxing, in addition to business

ALLIANZBANK

63

paolomanteroarchitetto

Allianzbank This office, located within Palazzo Mellerio in Milan (restored in 1993 by Studio Caccia Dominioni), is one of the most important and primary offices for Allianz in Italy. The client requested that we re interpret the rigidity and limitations set forth by the historic spaces of Palazzo Mellerio, based on an innovative and visionary concept adhering to the image and services offered by the Bank. The design surpassed all limitations imposed by the building’s architecture, while at the sime time, respecting the historic aspects of the building without receiving physical or psychological conditioning. The result was a unique and “lively arrangement, capable of responding efficiently to all operative needs of a modern bank, both in terms of function and image.

AUTOGRILL

69

paolomanteroarchitetto

Autogrill The challenge we had for this competition for Autogrill’s new headquarters was to re-think the building’s architecture and entrance scheme, in addition to the internal arrangement of offices being coherent to the image and prestige of the company’s brand. This project won the competition, and responded to Autogrill’s requests with a simple and effective proposal, responding to the company’s image profile, functional needs and efficiency. The redesign of the main stairs, with aluminium facing, and a great hall with triple heights, which release or “rip open” the old façade (in the form of a curtain wall, facing towards all floors of the building), are the architectural elements which revolve around the project. The space layout, incorporating light wood and glass elements that are consistent with

71

paolomanteroarchitetto the architectural whole, uniforms all choices for the interior design at all areas. This concept is applied to both operational and executive functions of the building, offering at all areas a high quality in space definition and perception in accordance to its corporate identity.
