President’s Notes: from our outgoing and incoming presidents Greetings Friends! I hope you have all had an enjoyable break from regular routines and are excited about planning for fall. While most of you will be returning to your classrooms (or cart!), others will have the opportunities of a new building or even retirement. As many of you know, I will be starting a new routine this fall, as my family and I moved to Houston, TX in July. I wanted to take this chance to again thank PAOSA for welcoming me with open arms and allowing me the privilege of serving on the board the past five years. I have so many fond memories of this chapter and truly regret that I won't be participating in this year's fabulous slate of workshops. I feel quite confident leaving you in the capable hands of Martha Glaze-Zook and I appreciate Pat Lutz's willingness to serve as treasurer to allow Martha to take the reins a year early. There will be several board positions that will need to be filled this Spring. Don't make your friends beg!!! Think about what you can offer to this wonderful organization and how your ideas and suggestions can influence the direction of our chapter. I hope that I will see many of you at National Conferences in the future and I certainly plan to check our website (www.paosa.org) for chapter news. Welcome back to the new school year—a fresh opportunity to expand your creativity and hone your skills. I hope you all have had an enriching summer, whether for much needed rest and relaxation, family time, travel or professional development. No matter what, the change of pace always does us good. We said a fond farewell to two of our staunch Board members—outgoing President, Deborah St. Onge moved in July as her husband Charles took a new position in Houston, TX. Deborah gave her all to PAOSA and we will miss her enthusiasm, dedication and leadership. Also, Deb Navin and her husband Mark have left Philadelphia for a new adventure and job experience. We will miss Deb’s input with Board and membership activities and her cheerful helping hands. Many thanks to both Deborahs for their professionalism and contributions to our chapter. If you taught or attended AOSA levels courses or master classes over the summer, you have undoubtedly come away inspired to put your learning into practice and share your growth. Our chapter is committed to extending and enhancing everyone’s growth by providing fine clinicians this season. Make sure to mark your calendars! CINDY HALL Orff Schulwerk: Playing with a Purpose September 20, 2008 8:30 coffee & registration, 9:00-1:30 workshop
Abington Friends School, Jenkintown, PA
Cindy Hall will present active Orff Schulwerk lessons with an emphasis on melodic and rhythmic curriculum concepts. Using poetry, folk song, drama, instrumental pieces, and movement, participants will work through the process of imitation, exploration, and improvisation. Please bring a soprano recorder.
Cindy Hall teaches Orff certification courses at The University of St. Thomas and the University of Kentucky and is an active conference and workshop clinician. She has taught music to children in public and private schools, directed an after school arts program, and conducted church children’s choirs. She served as a contributing writer of recorder materials for the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill series, Share the Music. Ms. Hall holds a BA in Music from Duke University, MA in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma, and Orff Certification from Memphis State University and Hamline University. She currently teaches first through fifth grade music and chorus at Rowland Hall- St. Mark’s School in Salt Lake City. This workshop is dedicated to the Brigitte Warner Memorial Fund of PAOSA. Brigitte was an Orff educator pioneer and influential in the founding of our chapter.

JOHN FEIERABEND* First Steps in Music: Becoming Tuneful, Beatful and Artful October 18, 2008 8:30 Coffee and Registration, 9-3:00 Workshop to be held at Princeton Day School
*Please note—this special workshop is shared with the Central New Jersey Chapter. Location and length of workshop are different from our regular workshops. See p. 8 for directions.
This workshop will provide a bridge from research to practice by demonstrating how a "natural" curriculum, rich in the repertoire of traditional children's songs, rhymes, games and dances can develop young children's musical intelligence, singing and movement skills and expressive sensitivities. A model of parents and children playing together in the years from birth to age three will be presented as well as a curriculum for 3 to 8 year old children in classroom settings. Dr. John Feierabend is considered one of the leading authorities on music and movement development in early childhood. He is a Professor of Music and the Director of the Music Education Division at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford and is a past President of the Organization of American Kodály Educators. Dr. Feierabend makes frequent presentations both in the United States and abroad and is the author of over 60 books, articles, CDs, DVDs and videotapes. A music educator for over thirty years, he continues to be committed to collecting, preserving and teaching the diverse folk music of our country and to using that folk music as a bridge to help children understand and enjoy classical music. His research has resulted in two music curricula; First Steps in Music, a music and movement program for infants through early elementary aged children and Conversational Solfege, a music literacy method for use in general music classes. Dr. Feierabend also helped develop the PBS children's television series Lomax: The Hound of Music, which is based on his First Steps in Music curriculum. Dr. Feierabend has been honored by the National Association for Music Education (MENC) as a Lowell Mason Fellow, received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) and was the first American recipient of the international LEGO prize, an award given annually to someone who has “helped to make the world a better place for children to live and grow.”

Martha is a graduate of Ithaca College and The Curtis Institute of Music. She completed her Orff levels at University of Northern Colorado. A faculty member of Philadelphia’s Settlement Music School since 1988, she teaches children ages 3-12. Martha is a frequent clinician for early childhood music education.
Member Highlights
Martha Crowell taught Dalcroze Orff Kodaly II at Towson University, the one-credit recorder ensemble course at West Chester University, and the San Francisco Orff Course recorder levels this summer. Deborah St-Onge and her family have moved to Texas where her husband has taken a ministry position at a Lutheran church in Houston.

Tips from Martha Crowell to start your year Orff Schulwerk Music Fur Kinder (Music for Children) recordings are available through iTunes and Amazon.com as mp3 downloads. Each recording has over 30 pieces on it for under ten dollars, so they're a bargain, and some of the pieces are from less-known sources, such as Cantus Firmus Satze, etc. It's a great source for teachers' own listening and for sharing in the music room. Having listening examples organized through iTunes has revolutionized my listening curriculum, saving hours of searching and sorting time. Pieces can be sorted by genre, composer, topic, album, country of origin, movement qualities, etc. Many teachers already do this, but for those who are new, it's good to know. Gwendolyn Brooks' brilliant book of children's poetry, Bronzeville Boys and Girls, is back in print, this time with illustrations by Faith Ringgold, Amistad Books/HarperCollins, 2007. My favorite poem, called "Gertrude," is about a young girl hearing Marian Anderson singing. The site www.notonthetest.com has the Tom Chapin song Beth Ann Hepburn referred to in last spring’s workshop. For those who saw Dee Joy Coulter's brain lectures at last year’s AOSA Conference, her talks are now converted from tapes to CDs, so the remaining cassette tapes are on sale for $4 each, with a minimum purchase of 5, through her until supplies run out. They have a huge range of field recordings from all over the world.

Directions to the Princeton Day School for October 18 Workshop: From Philadelphia and the south: Take Interstate 95 North across the Delaware River to Exit 7B (Lawrenceville/ Princeton) Route 206 North. Drive approximately five miles north on Route 206 to Elm Road. Turn left on Elm Road, which becomes The Great Road. Proceed 1.6 miles and then turn left into the Princeton Day School campus.
From the north: Take the New Jersey Turnpike South to Exit 9, Route One South. Take Route One South to Washington Road. Turn right onto Washington Road and travel through three traffic lights. At the fourth light turn left onto Nassau Street. Proceed through three more traffic lights, bearing left onto Route 206 South just after the third light. Proceed through another traffic light and then turn right at the next traffic light onto Elm Road, which becomes The Great Road. Proceed 1.6 miles and then turn left into the Princeton Day School campus.

Directions to Workshops Using Pennsylvania Turnpike - From the East: Get off the PA Turnpike at the Willow Grove Exit, Rt. 611 (exit #343), go South on 611 (Old York Rd.) about 4 or 5 miles until you get into the Jenkintown shopping district (small shops right along sidewalk). The first light is Greenwood - turn left. The first light on Greenwood is Washington Lane – turn left, second driveway, turn right into Abington Friends School. - From the West: Exit the PA Turnpike at PA-309 (exit #339), South. Follow 309S for 5.4 miles. Take a slight left onto W. Cheltenham Ave. Turn left onto Washington Lane. School is 2 miles up the road. From the north - take the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike South to Rt. I-276 east. Follow directions above. From the State of Delaware and Delaware County, PA Take I-95 North to Chester and exit at Rt. I-476 Plymouth Meeting (Blue Route). Stay on I476 and go onto the PA Turnpike East. Follow PA Turnpike directions above. From Chester County, PA Take Rt. 202 to the PA Turnpike East. Follow PA Turnpike directions above. From New Jersey - From Central Jersey - Take the New Jersey Turnpike to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Follow PA Turnpike directions above. - From Tacony Palmyra Bridge - Cross the Bridge and follow Rt. 73 north through Philadelphia (becomes Cottman Ave.) and into Montgomery County where it is called Township Line Road. Turn right onto Jenkintown Road, which becomes Greenwood Ave. Turn right onto Washington Lane. Abington Friends is on the right. - From Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman Bridges - Take Schuylkill Expressway I-76 West and bear right at Roosevelt Boulevard Extension. Exit at Broad Street Rt. 611 North and follow directions below. From Philadelphia Take Broad Street North (Rt. 611) and bear right onto Old York Road. Turn right at the end of “The Pavilion” shopping center onto Washington Lane. Abington Friends is 1 1/2 blocks on the right.
