Why$Orff$Schulwerk?! Carl!Orff!and!Gunild!Keetman's!Music!for!Children!publications!are!now!over!six!decades!old.! The!theoretical!foundations!of!elemental!music!training!were!established!over!eighty!years!ago.! With!the!advent!of!new!technologies!and!the!availability!of!other!significant!music!education! approaches!and!methodologies,!why!should!music!educators!adopt!Schulwerk!as!their!primary! approach!to!instruction?!This!workshop!will!focus!on!the!unique!possibilities!inherent!in!Orff! Schulwerk!that!are!as!relevant!today!as!they!were!many!years!ago.!Please!bring!a!soprano!and! alto!recorder!to!this!workshop.!! Steven&Calantropio,&taught!music!and!movement!in!the!River!Edge,!NJ!public!schools!for!31! years.!He!holds!certifications!in!Orff,!Kodaly!and!Dalcroze!methodologies!and!has!presented! workshops,!lectures!and!courses!both!nationally!and!internationally.!Steve!serves!as!AOSA's! first!Education!Director.!He!is!also!the!president!and!a!founding!member!of!the!American)Center) for)Elemental)Music)and)Movement,!a!nonprofit!organization!established!to!promote!elemental! music!and!movement!teaching!and!learning!in!the!United!States.!

President’s Message ! Dear!PAOSA!Membership!and!Friends,! ! At!last,!we!Spring!Ahead!!It!could!not!have!come!sooner,!in!my!opinion.!I!often!hit!a!drop!in!my! morale!around!this!time!of!year.!! ! It!always!lifts!my!morale,!however,!when!I!attend!one!of!our!Orff!workshops.!Drue&Bullington! did,!in!fact,!lead!us!from!Basics)to)Brilliance!on!Saturday,!and!I!am!already!eagerly!anticipating! Steven!Calantropio!who!is!coming!on!April!13.! ! ELECTIONS! At!our!spring!workshop,!the!board!will!be!holding!elections!for!the!positions!of!vice&president! and!treasurer.!Current!members!are!invited!to!vote.!So!far!we!have!two!individuals!who!are! running!for!these!positions;!Jennifer&Sheridan!is!running!for!the!position!of!treasurer!and! Member Spotlight Jennifer&Sheridan!is!the!music!teacher!and! chorus!director!at!Coopertown!Elementary! School!in!the!School!District!of!Haverford! Township.!She!has!been!teaching!music!for! 11!years!and!has!directed!drama!activities! for!intermediate!and!high!school!students.! She!graduated!from!the!University!of! Scranton,!studying!both!accounting!and! music,!earned!a!Master's!Degree!in!theatre! from!Villanova!University!and!her!teaching! certificate!from!Immaculata!University.!!She! has!completed!Orff!Schulwerk!Certification! in!Levels!I,!II,!and!III.!!! !

Workshop Review “Orff in Action” Julie Swanson and Linda Wardell By&Dawn&Pratson& ! Twenty!4th!and!5th!grade!students!came!to!participate!in!the!January!26!workshop,!“Orff!in! Action”,!where!Linda&Wardell!and!Julie&Swanson!took!us!on!a!journey,!turning!an!African!folk! tale!into!a!performance!of!shadow!puppetry,!music!and!story.! !
The!workshop!began!with!an!informative!slide!show,!which!gave!us!a!little!bit!of!history!of! shadow!puppetry!around!the!world.!!Then!the!folktale!Traveling)to)Tondo:)A)Tale)of)the)Nkundo) of)Zaire!was!read!to!us.!!Following!the!story,!we!divided!into!two!groups!that!were!made!up! equally!of!children!and!adults.!One!group!went!to!the!auditorium!to!work!with!Linda!on!the! staging!of!the!puppets.!!! !
The!puppets!were!previously!constructed!using!drawings!by!Linda’s!and!Julie’s!students!and! then!photocopied!on!transparency!sheets.!!They!were!then!projected!from!behind,!onto!a! muslin!screen,!using!an!overhead!projector,!which!created!the!shadows.!!The!children!stood! behind!the!screen!and!manipulated!the!puppets!from!below.!!The!other!group!stayed!in!the! music!room!and!worked!with!Julie!on!the!music!to!accompany!the!story!and!the!puppets.!!After! about!40!minutes,!the!two!groups!switched,!giving!everyone!a!chance!to!experience!all!aspects! of!the!performance.! !
After!lunch,!the!participants!chose!what!job!they!wanted!c!operating!the!puppets!or!playing! music.!!The!music!was!comprised!of!xylophone!and!percussion!parts!playing!music!from!Orffc Schulwerk,&Music)For)Children,)Volume)1,!along!with!percussion!parts!that!were!created!by! Linda,!Julie!and!their!students,!and!sound!effects!that!the!participants!created!themselves.!After! one!dress!rehearsal,!a!performance!was!put!on!for!parents!and!guests!that!had!the!complexity! and!polish!of!several!days’!efforts!rather!than!only!a!few!hours.! !
I!loved!the!way!both!Julie!and!Linda!encouraged!and!incorporated!the!participants’!creativity,! even!though!a!lot!of!the!music!was!composed!and!the!puppets!already!made.!For!example,!they! encouraged!students!to!come!up!with!ways!to!move!the!puppets!in!response!to!the!story!line,! sound!effects!and!music.! !
I!left!the!workshop!feeling!ready!to!take!on!a!similar!project!at!my!school,!and!have!approached! the!art!teacher!who!is!eager!to!partner!with!me.! &

Workshop Review “Musical In-Roads: From Basics to Brilliance” Drue Bullington By&Ann&McFarland&
! On!Saturday!March!9,!PAOSA!member,!Drue&Bullington,!treated!us!to!a!wonderful!time!of! singing,!chanting,!moving,!playing,!and!creating.!We!began!with!the!Russian!dance,!Sasha,)and! ended!with!a!frolickingctocfrenzied!movement!activity!to!the!music!of!Edvard!Grieg’s!In)the) Hall)of)the)Mountain)King.!In!between,!we!sang!canons,!created!with!Keetman’s!rhythmic! “building!blocks,”!played!around!with!the!evercpopular!book!Brown)Bear,)Brown)Bear,!and! brought!to!life!The)Longest)Night,!a!lovely!book!by!Marian!Dane!Bauer.!From!the!haunting! Phrygian!melody!of!Bullington’s!Bring)Back)the)Sun)to!the!triumph!of!the!simple!chickadees! (played!on!recorders),!this!rendition!of!The)Longest)Night,!is!sure!to!be!a!crowd!pleaser! wherever!it!may!roam.! ! Bullington’s!knowledge!of!Orff!process,!his!creativity,!as!well!as!his!innate!musicianship!shone! through!every!minute!of!this!fabulous!workshop.!I!think!I!can!speak!for!everyone!when!I!say! we!came!away!with!a!lilt!in!our!steps!and!a!sparkle!in!our!eyes.! !

The first light is Greenwood - turn left. The first light on Greenwood is Washington Lane – turn left, second driveway, turn right into Abington Friends School. - From the North - take the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike south to Rt. I-276 East. Follow directions above. From the State of Delaware and Delaware County, PA Take I-95 North to Chester and exit at Rt. I-476 Plymouth Meeting (Blue Route). Stay on I476 and go onto the PA Turnpike East. Follow PA Turnpike directions above. From Chester County, PA Take Rt. 202 to the PA Turnpike East. Follow PA Turnpike directions above. From New Jersey - From Central Jersey - Take the New Jersey Turnpike to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Follow PA Turnpike directions above. - From Tacony Palmyra Bridge - Cross the Bridge and follow Rt. 73 North through Philadelphia (becomes Cottman Ave.) and into Montgomery County where it is called Township Line Road. Turn right onto Jenkintown Road, which becomes Greenwood Ave. Turn right onto Washington Lane. Abington Friends is on the right. - From Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman Bridges - Take Schuylkill Expressway I-76 West and bear right at Roosevelt Boulevard Extension.
