Cannabis as Medicine Humans have been using cannabis for thousands of years.

The oldest known written record of cannabis use comes from the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung in 2727 BC. The early Chinese surgeon Hua Tuo (c. AD 140-208) is credited with being the first recorded person to use cannabis as an anesthetic. He reduced the plant to powder and mixed it with wine for administration prior to performing surgery.1 Through details captured in hieroglyphics, historians have noted that ancient Egyptians also used cannabis. In India, bhang, a drink made with raw cannabis, is considered to be an overall wellness beverage. Steam baths in the Middle East also show evidence of using cannabis to help with inflammation.2 In the United States, cannabis tinctures were considered to be an everyday health aid and were widely available at pharmacies until the 1930s, when the plant became criminalized as part of Prohibition, and its healing potential was largely forgotten. In recent decades, numerous states have legalized cannabis for its medicinal qualities.

In 1992, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Dr. Lumir Hanus along with American researcher Dr. William Devane made the breakthrough discovery of mapping the endocannabinoid system within the human body.3 This discovery launched a new generation of scientists and researchers that work everyday to discover the hidden depths of the plant and its efficacy as a legitimate medicine. Thanks to the courageous efforts of many activists and advocates around the country, more and more work is being done to tap into the plant’s potential.

Who we are Papa & Barkley was inspired by a son’s mission to ease his elderly, bedridden father’s back pain. After all conventional treatments failed, our founder developed what became our award-winning balm. Today, we are a team of caregivers, scientists, researchers, and professionals with a common mission: unlocking the power of Cannabis to improve people’s lives. We make products for our families and yours.

Founded by caring for the ones we love.

Our Philosophy Papa & Barkley lives by a Whole Plant philosophy and we strive to create products that are better for you, your family, and all your loved ones.

Our formulations are handcrafted using a whole plant infusion process. “Whole plant” means just what it sounds like — we use the whole plant! We take sun-grown cannabis flowers, leaves, and stems and soak them in our base oils to get the full spectrum of the plant’s biology; we don’t use harsh extraction processes or isolated components. We ensure our formulations are consistent and triple-tested from soil to shelf, guaranteeing absolutely no mold, mildew, pesticides, or heavy metals. This unique approach maintains the integrity of the original cannabinoids, terpenes, and phytonutrients of the plant. We do not use solvents. We do not add distillates. And we do not re-add terpenes. We let the plant do all the work! We believe it is important to maintain a soil-to-shelf perspective to cannabis cultivation and as a result we seek out local growers and unique strains. We are partnered with over 75 farms throughout Humboldt County who focus on quality, organic practices, and strain biodiversity. Being conscientious about the input products we use in our formulations allows us to support talented local farmers and obtain best in class flowers. We put the best ingredients and best processes into use. The result is the most potent, most efficacious, and cleanest remedy possible.

The Declaration of Clean Cannabis Papa & Barkley holds this truth to be self-evident: clean is the future of cannabis. To us, clean means simple, fresh, and better for you. At Papa & Barkley, clean products is not a fad, it is a set of principles that sets us apart. Clean is the backbone of our mission to unlock the power of cannabis to improve people’s lives. The cannabis industry is unregulated on a national level. Many companies are operating with a lack of guidance–using methods and ingredients not necessarily best for consumers. We feel it is our responsibility to lead by example and shape this industry as it grows. The industry and this plant has the potential to do good in the world. Through our actions every day we set a precedent for the future of our industry. We invite you to join us in our commitment to clean. Let’s hold ourselves to a higher standard.

THE PRINCIPLES OF CLEAN CANNABIS

Organic and regenerative farming practices

6

Clean ingredients

Whole plant infused

Solventless, no chemicals or harsh extraction methods

Triple-tested by 3rd-party

CLEAN STARTS AT THE FARM We choose farmers with a passion for growing clean and natural plants. By using native soil and organic and regenerative farming practices, they share our commitment to clean. Cannabis is a bioaccumulator, how it’s grown affects the quality of the plants. We use only sun-grown cannabis because it is the most natural method and leaves a smaller impact on the environment. We also go to great lengths to ensure our supporting ingredients are made using organic principles with no residual chemicals.

SOLVENTLESS WHOLE PLANT INFUSION People put their trust in us because we are transparent about the journey of our products. Whole plant infusion starts with whole plant cannabis and coconut or MCT oil. We slow-cook the ingredients into an infused oil. From there, we bottle the oil or blend it to craft the products you know and love. This allows all of the plant’s natural cannabinoids, terpenes, and phytonutrients to be infused without the use of solvents, isolates, or distillates. Every product is triple-tested at key points for 66 pesticides, 5 microbials, and 10 residual solvents. We test the input cannabis, we test after it’s blended, and we test the packaged product. Every product we make is certified by the State with a Certificate of Analysis (COA).

GREEN IS CLEAN Our products are an earthy, green color because they contain the full profile of the plant including chlorophyll, valuable phytonutrients, cannabinoids, terpenes and natural plant matter. Think of it like fresh-squeezed orange juice versus an orange-flavored drink. Why take a good thing that nature created and mess with it? You get more nutrients if you leave the plant in its most natural form. We believe in plant powered medicine and trust the plant to do the work. When you choose Papa & Barkley, you choose clean. You choose better for you. Clean farming, clean sourcing, clean input, and clean products for you and the ones you love — Papa & Barkley is the standard of clean in cannabis. #cleanhalo

Cannabinoids Phytocannabinoids, or cannabinoids, are the natural chemical compounds produced by cannabis flowers that provide the plant with natural protection. There are over a hundred cannabinoids that are unique to cannabis. Cannabinoids are found in everyday plants, too! You may already be familiar with echinacea, used to soothe a sore throat and combat cold and flu symptoms. Cannabinoids closely resemble natural compounds produced by our own bodies that are called endocannabinoids. These molecules bind to the body’s cannabinoid receptors, which were first discovered in 1988; this network of endocannabinoids and receptors that regulate bodily function is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Like endocannabinoids, each cannabinoid has a different composition and influence on the cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which provides the opportunity to successfully treat a wide variety of ailments and provide comfort for an array of symptoms. Early research indicates that each cannabinoid has unique medicinal properties. The concentration of cannabinoids varies with each cannabis strain. Knowing the percentage of certain cannabinoids in your cannabis and/or cannabis-infused products can help you understand how the plant will affect your body, allowing you to choose the most effective product for your ailments and symptoms.

Benefits of Terpenes Terpenes are the fragrant oils that give cannabis its aromatic diversity. These oils, contained in the flower’s sticky resin glands, also appear in many other herbs, fruits, and plants. They play a significant role in the therapeutic and medicinal use of cannabis by creating subtle differences in effects across different strains. If cannabinoids are a ship’s engine, the terpenes can be thought of as the rudder. At Papa & Barkley, we maintain the terpene profile found naturally in the plant and do not add terpenes back into our products (a process known as reterpening). As always, our philosophy is: why mess with a good thing? There are a huge variety of terpenes, each responsible for different smells like notes of pine, pepper, fruit, and flowers. Cannabis plants have over 120 identified terpenes that can range dramatically in their aromas. Terpenes are also thought to be associated with the psychoactive effects of strains, with different smells often being associated with certain effects. Bright lemony flavors, for example, are known as an indicator of energy improvement, while more earthy tones are thought to help you relax. Although the full range of terpene benefits are under-researched, studies have shown that terpenes work in synergy with THC and other cannabinoids to improve the therapeutic value of cannabis products. Terpenes have also been shown to reduce the intoxicating effects of THC when consumed together, upping its therapeutic value and contributing to the entourage effect.

Terpenes are commonly found in:

10

Primary Terpenes

11

Your Endocannabinoid System (ECS) The endogenous cannabinoid system, also known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS), can be thought of as the air traffic control center for the body. It controls physiological processes including appetite, pain sensation, mood, and memory. The ECS consists of two primary cannabinoid receptors: CB1 receptors (most concentrated in the central nervous system and brain) and CB2 receptors (abundant in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and peripheral nervous systems). The natural cannabinoids and phytonutrients found in cannabis communicate with these signal receptors of the ECS to help reduce minor aches, acute discomfort, and normal inflammation.

12

THE RECEPTORS Cannabinoids and naturally occurring endocannabinoids affect us by binding with the CB1 and CB2 receptors found throughout our bodies, much like a system of locks and keys. If you think of cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, or CBN as the keys then the CB1 & CB2 receptors are the corresponding locks that they fit into. These interactions are what drive modern research into cannabinoids and will lead to future medical discoveries as research on the cannabis plant continues to grow. The physiological effects of cannabinoids vary depending on the location of the cannabinoid receptors that they stimulate. These receptors are common in our limbic system (the part of the brain that affects memory, cognition, and psychomotor performance), our mesolimbic pathway (associated with feelings of reward), and are also widely distributed in areas governing pain perception. Different ailments and conditions respond to different cannabinoids. Someone with acute inflammation, for example, may benefit from CBD, as it is one of the strongest antiinflammatory agents found in nature. On the other hand, THC is one of the strongest analgesics (painkillers), and those seeking restful sleep, mental well-being, and relaxation would also benefit from THC because it helps calm the mind.

Cannabinoids and naturallyoccurring endocannabinoids affect us by binding with the CB1 and CB2 receptors found throughout our bodies, much like a system of locks and keys.

13

BIOAVAILABILITY Bioavailability refers to the absorption of cannabinoids in the body. This absorption varies by body and delivery method (i.e., topical, sublingual, ingestion, or inhalation). Inhaling 10 mg of CBD through a vape is not equivalent to ingesting 10 mg of CBD in a tincture. While smoking is an effective delivery method for many, the heat actually burns off cannabinoids and other phytonutrients, reducing the available cannabinoids. When taking a tincture sublingually (under the tongue), precise dosing is needed, as all the cannabinoids are absorbed by the body. With topicals, such as balms and body oils, natural lipids like coconut oil absorbs rapidly through the skin, making them ideal substrates.

ENTOURAGE EFFECT The entourage effect — the idea that molecules that occur together in nature interact in useful ways — applies to cannabinoids and terpenes. Terpenes are molecular compounds that are naturally found in plants and insects, manifesting most often in the forms of natural oils, and are accompanied by a distinct aroma and viscosity. Terpenes and cannabinoids (such as CBD and THC) work together to maximize benefits in the body. Lab and patientbased studies reveal that while CBD or THC can work alone for some symptoms, they can often create better outcomes in combination. Specific ratios, especially with naturallyoccurring terpenes, have the potential to cause even better effects. The entourage effect is one of the leading theories influencing cannabis research worldwide.

Cannabis For You CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCT: Selecting the best product is based on a number of parameters. Consider the following when deciding on the best product for you: • The ailment or indication from which you’re seeking comfort. • Does your condition require targeted or whole-body comfort? • Your preferred delivery method, taking into account onset time and duration. • The potency, CBD to THC ratio, and level of psychoactivity that you’d like. Will these products get me “high,” or do they cause intoxication? Intoxication is an important consideration when selecting a product. While some intoxicating effects are therapeutic and, for example, an important factor for those seeking restful sleep, we recognize they can sometimes be inhibiting during the work day.

In much the same way that drinking a bottle of NyQuil might make you feel “high,” consuming too much cannabis can cause major dysphoria. When taken responsibly, you can avoid unintended psychoactivity.

HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS: • Use a topical for localized effect or if you need to avoid intoxication. • If ingesting or smoking, start with a small dose and increase the dosage in 5mg increments. Note the onset time and determine whether you are getting the desired effect. • Ingest or take CBD sublingually to counteract any unintended paranoia, anxiety, or intoxication from THC. • Look for products with THCa or lower ratios of THC to minimize intoxication. • The effects are typically stronger when ingesting.

15

Delivery Methods TOPICAL Topicals provide relief by letting cannabinoids penetrate the skin and interact with our endocannabinoid receptors to provide comfort, flexibility, and mobility to the joints, muscles, and other areas of the body. Results can be felt within minutes, and can last anywhere from two to four hours. Most importantly, the cannabinoids do not reach the bloodstream, so comfort is localized where applied, with no intoxication.

INGESTIBLE When taking tinctures, capsules, or edibles orally, the cannabinoids are metabolized in the stomach like a food or beverage. The cannabinoids enter the bloodstream directly and immediately travel to the brain, where they bind to cannabinoid receptor cells. When ingested, THC becomes 11-hydroxy-tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabinoid that is five to ten times more intoxicating than THC itself. CBD and THCa, however, can be ingested without concern for intoxicating effects. Ingestion is one of the best ways to absorb CBD because it brings out its strong anti-inflammatory properties. This method has similar effects to inhaling cannabis through smoking or vaporization. Effects are usually felt within 15 to 45 minutes and last two to three hours.

TRANSDERMAL Transdermal patches deliver the full spectrum of cannabinoids through application on the skin, meaning that the cannabinoids penetrate all layers of the skin to reach your bloodstream. Transdermal delivery has the potential to affect acute discomfort and normal inflammation throughout the body, regardless of the location. This method has the potential for intoxicating effects, depending on the ratios applied. Among the benefits of transdermal delivery is that it is quick and easy to apply, lasts significantly longer than most delivery methods, and can be used discreetly. Transdermal patches release slowly, so they deliver the full cannabinoid content over the course of 12 hours.

16

Our Production Process LIPID INFUSION Our main method of extraction is our proprietary lipid infusion technique, which is used in developing all our topical and tincture products. This is an all-natural and solvent-free process, meaning chemicals are never introduced. In this process, we soak our premium cannabis plants in a simple lipid (fat) base such as coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil, or MCT oil, then add heat and pressure using our pressurized lipid infusion cooking process. During this cooking process, the cannabinoids are absorbed (infused) into the lipid base. Our unique approach maintains all of the original terpenes or cannabinoids and phytonutrients, unlike many other extraction methods, such as CO2 or butane, and preserves more cannabinoids than other leading brands. We perform this process on THC- and CBD-rich flowers. The resulting oils are blended to achieve our different ratios.

We do not use solvents. We do not add distillates. We let the plant do the work.

FRESH-PRESSED ROSIN The rosin process involves pressing cannabis between two heated metal plates to produce the all-natural extract; this concentrated oil has a similar consistency to tree sap. The resulting extract is typically very potent (over 60% cannabinoids) and, again, we maintain the plant’s full cannabinoid and terpene profile. We never add ethanol (a process called winterization), which is commonly used to produce a clear, chlorophyll- and phytonutrient-deficient product. All our products are earthy in color because the chlorophyll and valuable phytonutrients and natural plant matter still exist in the extracts. These rosin extracts are then combined to achieve our four different ratios (1:3, 1:1, 3:1 and CBD only). 17

Our Right Ratios Each person’s body and endocannabinoid system is unique, with different needs and receptors. We believe that cannabis is not one-size-fits-all. We also believe — thanks to research — that optimal therapeutic efficacy requires the use of both CBD, the nonintoxicating compound in cannabis, and THC, its intoxicating component. Papa & Barkley offers a suite of products in different ratios, allowing you to select the best ratio for your therapeutic needs. You can find the ratio of CBD to THC on the product label. The larger the amount of THC to CBD, the more THC-rich the product is, and vice versa.

CBD rich ratio that is good for ongoing acute discomfort, normal inflammation, emotional well-being.

18

Balanced

Balanced level of CBD to THC. Good for mental well-being, mood enhancement, sleep conditions, whole body comfort, acute discomfort, and normal inflammation.

THC Rich

THC rich ratio is a good starting point for most people seeking comfort from localized aches, normal inflammation, and can improve mental well-being.

GLOSSARY CANNABIS - A plant genus that produces three species of flowering plants: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Cannabis has long been cultivated both for the production of hemp and medicine. FLOWER - Flowers produce the resin that contains their active cannabinoids. Cannabis flowers are the hairy, sticky, resin-covered buds that are harvested and dried to be used as medication. HEMP - A fibrous product that can be produced from the cannabis plant and can be used in the manufacture of rope, paper, beauty products, and a vast array of other products. TERPENES - The fragrant oils that give cannabis its aromatic diversity. They play a significant role in the therapeutic and medicinal use of cannabis, by creating subtle differences in effects across different strains. ECS - The endogenous cannabinoid system, or endocannabinoid system (ECS) for short, can be thought of as the air traffic control center for the body. The ECS consists of two primary cannabinoid receptors, CB1 receptors (most abundant in the central nervous system) and CB2 receptors (more abundant in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and peripheral nervous systems). These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ENTOURAGE EFFECT - The idea that molecules that occur together in nature interact in useful ways, which applies to cannabinoids and terpenes working directly with the ECS receptors (CB1 & CB2). BIOAVAILABILITY - The absorption of cannabinoids in the body. This absorption varies by body site and delivery method (i.e., topical, sublingual, ingestion, inhaling). VAPING - A consumption method that heats either flowers or cannabis-infused oils to a temperature that produces a cannabinoidlaced vapor to inhale. SMOKING - A consumption method that combusts flowers with high heat to inhale the smoke produced; provides immediate effects and psychoactivity. TOPICAL - A consumption method that provides comfort through cannabinoids penetrating the skin (our largest organ) and interacting with our receptors to ease discomfort, acute discomfort, and normal inflammation. Cannabinoids do not reach the bloodstream, so comfort is localized where applied, with no intoxication. INGESTION - A consumption method to take tinctures, capsules, or edibles orally; the cannabinoids are metabolized in the stomach like a food or beverage. The cannabinoids enter the bloodstream directly and immediately travel to the brain, providing longer lasting effects and psychoactivity.

31

GLOSSARY SUBLINGUAL - A consumption method to orally take a tincture, capsule or edible under the tongue, which provides quicker absorption and effects. TRANSDERMAL - A consumption method in which the cannabinoids penetrate all layers of the skin to reach your bloodstream. This affects acute discomfort and normal inflammation throughout the body, regardless of the location of discomfort. Transdermal patches release slowly, so they deliver the full cannabinoid content over the course of 12 hours. LIPID INFUSION - An all-natural and solvent-free extraction process in which cannabis plants are soaked in a simple fat (lipid) base such as coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil, or MCT oil, then add heat and pressure using our pressurized lipid infusion cooking process. During this cooking process, the cannabinoids are absorbed (infused) into the lipid base. ROSIN - This extraction process involves pressing cannabis between two heated metal plates to produce the all-natural extract; this concentrated oil has a similar consistency to tree sap. DURATION - How long a product’s effects will last.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

PSYCHOACTIVE - The “high” effect produced by THC. THC - The abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the most well-known and most abundantly available cannabinoid in cannabis plants. THC is also the component in cannabis that is responsible for the intoxicating effects, or the “high.” Research has shown THC to be an effective medical treatment for a range of conditions. CBD - The abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the at least 85 cannabinoids found in cannabis and the second only to THC when it comes to average volume. Recently, CBD has gained support for its use as a medical treatment as research has shown it effectively treats acute discomfort, normal inflammation, and improves emotional well-being without intoxicating effects. SOLVENTS - Chemical and organic solvents, most commonly butane, propane, ethanol and CO2 are commonly used in extracting specific cannabinoids such as THC or CBD. ICE WATER HASH- Ice Water Hash refers to the collected trichome heads which are knocked off from washing fresh frozen cannabis material in ice and water. FULL SPECTRUM - Full spectrum refers to capturing the entire essence of the cannabis plant. A full spectrum product means that all of the natural terpenes, cannabinoids, and phytonutrients are present. ONSET - How long until a product’s effects are felt.
