THE CHANDRA
CONCEPT
by Glenn R. Wallis
Vitality, identity and stylishness beyond the usual... that’s what many of us Fashion Gurus are busy looking for. But whether we find it, alas, is quite another matter. And with the fashion circuit being so far from Samui, one might give up all hope and not even bother looking on a small tropical isle. But that’s precisely the charm of Chandra, for here, there are two brave souls putting together creations and collections that have a voice of their own, and are wearable not only while on holiday, but will also make a dramatic statement back home. The Chandra concept is a compilation of unique fashion designs and accessories manufactured from natural fibres within different countries in Asia. Concept creators Dana and Barak seek to achieve a transformation of what we are wearing, integrating feelings and aspects from different cultures and influences from around the globe. There are some fabulous finds to be had at Chandra’s two shops, with chic and slinky clothing bearing feminine yet simple designs, gorgeous and dependable, and with an array of style ranging from the exotic to tribal influences. Chandra is the brainchild of Barak and Dana, who travel every couple of months to collect new ideas, clothing and designs for their shops. Their eclectic style blends Asia with Europe, and the fusion is distinctive and brilliantly achieved.

“We have a new collection each year,” says Dana “but we also have many items that change as the months go past. So what you see is different each time you come to visit us. Chandra’s diverse stock will hold many charms for just about everyone, and is never tired or has that seen-it, worn-it feel.” The clothes may be light, summery and easy for beach living but won’t fall apart, as Barak and Dana insist on fine quality and reliability in Western sizes. Chandra is also a great place for gifts and accessories and a small, however, exceptional collection for men. You will also find amazing leather bags, Tie Die silk dresses, and Chiffon sarongs with traditional batik, funky leather belts, unique jewellery and a hard to resist collection of scarves. For items that you will not see anywhere else visit Chandra’s two shops located in Chaweng. Chandra I is found at the Macdonald’s area (along Chaweng Lake) next door to Tropical Murphy’s, and Chandra II opposite Via Vai restaurant (Top`s Supermarket area).
